Working Towards a
Bully-Free Campus:
Take a stand,
Extend a Helping Hand
“Bullying is a widespread and serious
problem that can happen anywhere. It
is not a phase children have to go
through, it is not "just messing
around" and it is not something we
just grow out of. Bullying can cause
serious and lasting harm.”
-thebullyproject.com
The Golden Rule
“Treat others the way
you want to be treated.”
Anti-Bullying Act of 2012
 Section 2. Acts of Bullying
“(a) Any unwanted physical contact between the bully and the victim
like punching, pushing, shoving, kicking, slapping, tickling, headlocks,
objects as weapons;
(b) Any act that causes damage to a victim’s psyche and/or
emotional well-being;
(c) Any slanderous statement or accusation that causes the victim
undue emotional distress like directing foul language or profanity at the
target, name-calling, tormenting and commenting negatively on
victim’s looks, clothes and body; and
(d) Cyber-bullying or any bullying done through the use of technology
or any electronic means.”
Bullying Definition
Behavior that is intentional, hurtful and
repeated by one or more persons.
Bullied students are teased, harassed, and
assaulted verbally or physically.
Two Types of Bullying
Direct Indirect
Direct
Physical –
hitting, kicking, pushi
ng, stealing, hiding or
ruining someone’s
things.
Making someone do
something they don’t
want to do.
Verbal – name
calling, teasing, insulti
ng, threats.
Indirect
 Relationship Bullying – gossiping,
spreading rumors and lies about
someone.
 Making someone feel left out or
rejected.
 A true friend will not backstab you.
 A person who backstabs is someone
just wearing a mask of a friend.
 Remember: You do not have to come
home with a bloody nose or head for
it to be considered bullying, words
can break a spirit and torment a
person.
Indirect
 Some people spread
rumors as a way to
intimidate others and
gain status or popularity.
 But spreading rumors as
a way to turn people
against someone is a
form of bullying.
 Sadly, when other people
see this kind of thing
going on, they don't
always stand up for
what's right.
 They may become less
friendly to the person who
is being talked about
because they're afraid of
becoming the next
target.
 We don't have to be
good friends with
everyone — or even like
everyone. But not liking
another person doesn't
give someone the right to
spread rumors, gossip, or
putdowns.
Bullying can be...
One person
making fun of
another.
One person trying
to beat up another.
A group of people
ganging up against
others.
How does it make you feel?
Does it have to be a
part of growing up?
No
Each and every
person has the
right to feel
safe in school
and in life.
Characteristics of a Bully
Want to be on top by
putting others down
Gain confidence in
numbers (by gossiping and
rumor spreading to make
people side with them)
Envious of the success of
others that is why they put
them down
Insecure deep inside
• Engage in backstabbing
instead of talking to the
person directly
• Lack confidence but
pretends to be tough
• Enjoy feelings of power
and control
• Enjoy causing pain
• Lack compassion and
empathy for their targets
Characteristics of a Bully
 Something or
someone is making
them feel insecure.
~Therefore they
bully others to make
themselves feel
better.
 They might be spoiled
by their parents.
 They could have something
going on in their family.
 They might not feel like they
are getting enough
attention from parents or
teachers.
 They might have watched
their parents or older siblings
get their way by being
angry and pushy.
 Maybe they are also bullied.
All bullies have one thing in common:
Who is a
Target?
 Those who the
bullies think are
doing good
(threat to them) or
who they think are
weak and gullible.
TARGETS
Those who:
 Excel (have good grades) that others
consider a threat
 Don’t fit in
 Physically weak or left behind in terms
of grades
 Usually alone and do not have many
friends
 Don't have a lot of confidence and don't
stand up for himself/herself
 BEWARE:
ANYBODY CAN BE A
TARGET
Ways to avoid future
bullying
 Hang out with friends
 Avoid unsupervised areas
 Sit near the bus driver on the bus or
walk with a teacher to class
 Don’t walk alone and avoid places where bullying occurs
 Don’t act scared
“No one can make you feel inferior without your
consent”.
– Eleanor Roosevelt
Report, Report,
Report
Report it to a trusted adult
immediately
BE A HERO
SAVE SOMEONE
MAKE A DIFFERENCE
VIDEO: DON’T BULLY BE A
FRIEND
Don’t Just be a
bystander: Be a Hero
 Do not just be a bystander. It does
not help.
 Do not be silent to the
INJUSTICE.
 Encourage other bystanders to
help stop the bullying by being
assertive.
 Make friends with someone who
continually gets picked on.
 Report it or send someone to a
trusted adult.
 Please STAND for the bullied.
The bully is someone they fear.
Others fear that if they do not side with
the bully then they are the ones who will
be bullied.
They want to “side” with the bully because
it makes them feel strong.
They’re entertained by the bullying.
Peer Pressure
 They don’t think speaking up will help.
 They’re afraid that if they say something, the bully will turn
on them.
 Remember: when you are a bystander you are also
being bullied already for you allowed your value
system to be bent – you get to agree on something
you do not believe in and at the same time you
become part of the bullying problem –you allowed
somebody to suffer unduly.
Some things you can say if someone is
getting bullied.
Ask Yourself These Questions
 Did this person do something bad to me that is why I do
not like him or her or do I like what he or she has that is
why I do not like him or her?
 Does it make you feel better to hurt the person you are
envious of?
 Do you want to be on top at the expense of others that is
why you gossip about them, backstab them and make up
stories about them?
 Do you sometimes use your size and strength to get your
way?
 Do you influence your friends to gossip and make
somebody feel inferior and left out?
 Do you exclude others in your group for no valid reason
and deliberately make them feel left out?
 Have you been bullied by someone in
the past and feel like you have to make
up for doing the same thing to others?
 Do you avoid thinking about how
other people might feel if you say or
do hurtful things to them?
Ask Yourself These Questions
If you are a bully, here
are some ways to stop
Apologize to people
that you have
bullied, and follow it
up by being friendly.
They might not trust
you right away, but
eventually they will
see that you have
changed.
More ways
 If you are having a hard time feeling
good about yourself, explore ways to
boost your self-esteem.
(Do not compare yourself with others.
Life is not a competition. Embrace and
accept yourself for who you are.
 Stop being jealous of others. Stop
counting someone else’s blessings just
be grateful and be appreciative of what
you have.
 If you feel like you’re having
trouble controlling your feelings,
especially anger, talk to a school
counselor about it.
REMEMBER:
 FOR THE BULLIED: You are not the one with the problem.
The bully is the one.
 Treat others the way you want to be treated. Stand up
for someone when he or she needs it, and when you need
it, someone will stand up for you.
 A true friend is happy for your success and will not pull you
down for him or her to feel better about himself/herself.
 If the bully can do that to another person who is of no
fault, then you can also be his or her next victim. So be
PROACTIVE.
REMEMBER:
 If someone backstabs a classmate, beware
of that person since he or she could also do
that to you!
 Do not let the bully stop you from being
yourself. Keep doing what you love to do.
REMEMBER:
Let’s change the world a bit
at a time…
 Bullying can
happen to anyone
anywhere and it is
our job to STOP IT.
 MAKE A
DIFFERENCE!
 It starts right here,
right now!
PLEDGE
 TAKE A STAND
 NOT IN OUR SCHOOL
[ ]I will not be a BULLY
[ ]I will help the BULLIED
[ ] I will speak up about BULLYING
Let us commit ourselves !
Write down your pledge on the
COMMITMENT WALL!

Working Towards A Bully-Free Campus

  • 1. Working Towards a Bully-Free Campus: Take a stand, Extend a Helping Hand “Bullying is a widespread and serious problem that can happen anywhere. It is not a phase children have to go through, it is not "just messing around" and it is not something we just grow out of. Bullying can cause serious and lasting harm.” -thebullyproject.com
  • 2.
  • 3. The Golden Rule “Treat others the way you want to be treated.”
  • 4. Anti-Bullying Act of 2012  Section 2. Acts of Bullying “(a) Any unwanted physical contact between the bully and the victim like punching, pushing, shoving, kicking, slapping, tickling, headlocks, objects as weapons; (b) Any act that causes damage to a victim’s psyche and/or emotional well-being; (c) Any slanderous statement or accusation that causes the victim undue emotional distress like directing foul language or profanity at the target, name-calling, tormenting and commenting negatively on victim’s looks, clothes and body; and (d) Cyber-bullying or any bullying done through the use of technology or any electronic means.”
  • 5. Bullying Definition Behavior that is intentional, hurtful and repeated by one or more persons. Bullied students are teased, harassed, and assaulted verbally or physically.
  • 6. Two Types of Bullying Direct Indirect
  • 7. Direct Physical – hitting, kicking, pushi ng, stealing, hiding or ruining someone’s things. Making someone do something they don’t want to do. Verbal – name calling, teasing, insulti ng, threats.
  • 8. Indirect  Relationship Bullying – gossiping, spreading rumors and lies about someone.  Making someone feel left out or rejected.  A true friend will not backstab you.  A person who backstabs is someone just wearing a mask of a friend.  Remember: You do not have to come home with a bloody nose or head for it to be considered bullying, words can break a spirit and torment a person.
  • 9. Indirect  Some people spread rumors as a way to intimidate others and gain status or popularity.  But spreading rumors as a way to turn people against someone is a form of bullying.  Sadly, when other people see this kind of thing going on, they don't always stand up for what's right.  They may become less friendly to the person who is being talked about because they're afraid of becoming the next target.  We don't have to be good friends with everyone — or even like everyone. But not liking another person doesn't give someone the right to spread rumors, gossip, or putdowns.
  • 10. Bullying can be... One person making fun of another. One person trying to beat up another. A group of people ganging up against others.
  • 11. How does it make you feel?
  • 12. Does it have to be a part of growing up? No Each and every person has the right to feel safe in school and in life.
  • 13.
  • 14. Characteristics of a Bully Want to be on top by putting others down Gain confidence in numbers (by gossiping and rumor spreading to make people side with them) Envious of the success of others that is why they put them down Insecure deep inside
  • 15. • Engage in backstabbing instead of talking to the person directly • Lack confidence but pretends to be tough • Enjoy feelings of power and control • Enjoy causing pain • Lack compassion and empathy for their targets Characteristics of a Bully
  • 16.  Something or someone is making them feel insecure. ~Therefore they bully others to make themselves feel better.  They might be spoiled by their parents.  They could have something going on in their family.  They might not feel like they are getting enough attention from parents or teachers.  They might have watched their parents or older siblings get their way by being angry and pushy.  Maybe they are also bullied. All bullies have one thing in common:
  • 17. Who is a Target?  Those who the bullies think are doing good (threat to them) or who they think are weak and gullible.
  • 18. TARGETS Those who:  Excel (have good grades) that others consider a threat  Don’t fit in  Physically weak or left behind in terms of grades  Usually alone and do not have many friends  Don't have a lot of confidence and don't stand up for himself/herself  BEWARE: ANYBODY CAN BE A TARGET
  • 19.
  • 20. Ways to avoid future bullying  Hang out with friends  Avoid unsupervised areas  Sit near the bus driver on the bus or walk with a teacher to class  Don’t walk alone and avoid places where bullying occurs  Don’t act scared “No one can make you feel inferior without your consent”. – Eleanor Roosevelt
  • 21. Report, Report, Report Report it to a trusted adult immediately BE A HERO SAVE SOMEONE MAKE A DIFFERENCE
  • 22. VIDEO: DON’T BULLY BE A FRIEND
  • 23. Don’t Just be a bystander: Be a Hero  Do not just be a bystander. It does not help.  Do not be silent to the INJUSTICE.  Encourage other bystanders to help stop the bullying by being assertive.  Make friends with someone who continually gets picked on.  Report it or send someone to a trusted adult.  Please STAND for the bullied.
  • 24. The bully is someone they fear. Others fear that if they do not side with the bully then they are the ones who will be bullied. They want to “side” with the bully because it makes them feel strong. They’re entertained by the bullying. Peer Pressure
  • 25.  They don’t think speaking up will help.  They’re afraid that if they say something, the bully will turn on them.  Remember: when you are a bystander you are also being bullied already for you allowed your value system to be bent – you get to agree on something you do not believe in and at the same time you become part of the bullying problem –you allowed somebody to suffer unduly.
  • 26. Some things you can say if someone is getting bullied.
  • 27.
  • 28. Ask Yourself These Questions  Did this person do something bad to me that is why I do not like him or her or do I like what he or she has that is why I do not like him or her?  Does it make you feel better to hurt the person you are envious of?  Do you want to be on top at the expense of others that is why you gossip about them, backstab them and make up stories about them?  Do you sometimes use your size and strength to get your way?  Do you influence your friends to gossip and make somebody feel inferior and left out?  Do you exclude others in your group for no valid reason and deliberately make them feel left out?
  • 29.  Have you been bullied by someone in the past and feel like you have to make up for doing the same thing to others?  Do you avoid thinking about how other people might feel if you say or do hurtful things to them? Ask Yourself These Questions
  • 30.
  • 31. If you are a bully, here are some ways to stop Apologize to people that you have bullied, and follow it up by being friendly. They might not trust you right away, but eventually they will see that you have changed.
  • 32. More ways  If you are having a hard time feeling good about yourself, explore ways to boost your self-esteem. (Do not compare yourself with others. Life is not a competition. Embrace and accept yourself for who you are.  Stop being jealous of others. Stop counting someone else’s blessings just be grateful and be appreciative of what you have.  If you feel like you’re having trouble controlling your feelings, especially anger, talk to a school counselor about it.
  • 33. REMEMBER:  FOR THE BULLIED: You are not the one with the problem. The bully is the one.  Treat others the way you want to be treated. Stand up for someone when he or she needs it, and when you need it, someone will stand up for you.  A true friend is happy for your success and will not pull you down for him or her to feel better about himself/herself.  If the bully can do that to another person who is of no fault, then you can also be his or her next victim. So be PROACTIVE.
  • 34. REMEMBER:  If someone backstabs a classmate, beware of that person since he or she could also do that to you!  Do not let the bully stop you from being yourself. Keep doing what you love to do.
  • 36. Let’s change the world a bit at a time…  Bullying can happen to anyone anywhere and it is our job to STOP IT.  MAKE A DIFFERENCE!  It starts right here, right now!
  • 37. PLEDGE  TAKE A STAND  NOT IN OUR SCHOOL [ ]I will not be a BULLY [ ]I will help the BULLIED [ ] I will speak up about BULLYING Let us commit ourselves ! Write down your pledge on the COMMITMENT WALL!  PBSkids.org  Youtube.com  Stopbullyingnow.com  Jaredstory.com

Editor's Notes

  1. Good day fellow Paulinians! This is the first time we are going to celebrate Working Towards a Bully-Free Campus. This is in line with the Anti-bullying Act of 2012. Bullying can no longer be ignored. It’s time to take a stand. Sad to say (read definition). I know each one of us have been bullied in one way or another, we may have friends who have been victims of bullying, or we might even be the bystander, allowing the bullying to go on. So please listen on how we can promote a bully-free campus.
  2. Remember: as Matthew 5:43 points out “Every child of God is our brother or sister” therefore let us be our brother’s and sister’s keeper. That’s why don’t bully be a friend. When we see a traffic light let us remember that red stands for STOP-- STOP BULLYING. Yellow stands for SLOW DOWN AND THINK BEFORE YOU SPEAK AND ACT. And Green stands for GO & LOVE EACH OTHER! Bullying is like pollution- it affects everybody in the environment.
  3. So Paulinians let us keep in mind: “Treat others the way you want to be treated.” Would you like to be bullied? Of course not. Therefore DO NOT be a bully yourself.
  4. In our country, we now have the Anti-Bullying Act of 2012 which defines bullying as: (read slide)
  5. There are two types of bullying: (read)
  6. Indirect bullying is when (read slide)People who are truly well liked treat everyone with respect and fairness. They don't put other people down or try to gain power by having "followers." They're confident and sure of themselves, so they don't have to resort to this kind of behavior.
  7. Does BULLYING have to be a part of growing up?? OF COURSE NOT! (read from each and every…) since school is our second home. Thus we should feel protected in our very own school.
  8. So here are some tips to avoid future bullying: READ!
  9. What is a bystander? A bystander is someone who just watches and tolerates the bullying. Read slide
  10. TO KNOW THAT IF YOU ARE PART OF THE PROBLEM REFLECT ON THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS:
  11. If you think that you are part of this problem, what can you do?
  12. *ending* Let our pledge be:I will not be a bullyI will help the bulliedI will speak about bullying
