WHAT DO WE MEAN BY BULLYING??? A pattern of repeated behavior that is meant to hurt someone (physically, socially, or emotionally) and usually has an imbalance of power (physical or social).
WHY ARE WE EVEN TALKING ABOUT BULLYING? We want ATES to be a safe place for EVERYONE. We strive to be bully free, yet still we have seen it happening. Bullying in childhood can lead to:  Loneliness Depression Anxiety School refusal Gang involvement Substance abuse Eating disorders Poor self esteem and these effects can continue on into adulthood!!!
IS IT A FIGHT OR IS IT BULLYING? A FIGHT or CONFLICT is normal.  It is normal to be frustrated, disagree, and argue.  Even aggression and hurtful remarks are part of conflict at all ages. BULLYING is serious because it is  ongoing  and involves an  imbalance of power .

DO YOU THINK GIRLS BULLY DIFFERENTLY THAN BOYS? Most of the time the answer is  YES !
BOYS: GIRLS: Usually Physical Usually through friendships or relationships Easy to see or hear Harder to notice because no bruises or hitting
WHAT IS: A relationship? A connection with another person .
WHAT IS Aggression? Destructive behavior .
GIRL BULLYING IS CALLED… … RELATIONAL AGGRESSION -Behaviors that harm others through attacking friendships, feelings of acceptance, and inclusion -A deliberate (on purpose) manipulation on one person’s part to damage, control, or ruin another person’s peer relationships

THE 3 ROLES IN BULLYING AGGRESSOR:  the one doing the Bullying Behavior TARGET/VICTIM:  the person being bullied BYSTANDER:  the person or people watching/seeing the bullying happen
BULLYING BEHAVIORS HONESTY CHECK:  Have you ever used any of these behaviors? Spreading Rumors Excluding Ignoring Gossiping Taunting Insulting Controlling Bossing Using Body Language to Communicate Dislike (eye rolling) Cyber Activity (My Space, Email, Text) Passing Notes/Slam Book Making School Uncomfortable  Damaging Property Making fun of Someone (clothes, appearance, weight…) Persuading friends to exclude someone you are mad at Telling someone else’s secrets Rude Comments Pushing, hitting, and threatening
THE AGGRESSOR/BULLY
BULLIES CAN CHANGE! Step 1:  Realize and identify your bullying behavior Step 2:  Acknowledge that you need/want to change Step 3: Apologize for the negative behavior Step 4: Increase your empathy concerns for others Step 5: Use your leadership skills to help rather than hurt. If these steps are too hard to do alone – ASK FOR  HELP.
WHAT SHOULD I DO IF I AM THE TARGET/VICITM? BE ASSERTIVE -  tell the person to stop DON’T BELIEVE THE BULLY – the bully only has the power if you give it VALUE YOURSELF REPORT BULLYING - it is not tattling if it is harmful, dangerous, or destructive FIND SAFE PLACES AND PEOPLE MAKE NEW FRIENDS AND TRY NEW ACTIVITIES YOU CAN ALWAYS ASK FOR HELP!!!
LISTEN UP BYSTANDERS! Choosing to ignore the bullying is the same as supporting the behavior. INSTEAD YOU CAN… Refuse to be an audience for the bullying incident If appropriate and safe, ask the bully to stop Be a friend to the victim, invite them to talk with you Support the victim – write the victim a note or tell him/her you don’t agree with the bully Tell an adult (There is a difference between TATTLING and TELLING: The IN/OUT Rule:  If you are trying to get someone OUT of trouble then TELL!  If you are trying to get someone into trouble then you it is TATTLING!)
REMEMBER WE ALL NEED TO WORK TOGETHER TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN OUR SCHOOL, COMMUNITY, AND WORLD…
