School Bullying: toward Better Mitigation and ResponseJason Atherton
Presentation on school bullying as part of the Strategies to Mitigate and Respond to Bullying seminar at Intertel Academy on November 11 2016. https://www.intertel.co.za
Troubled by the menace of bullying in their school, students at the CAS School in Karachi took up the challenge of educating their peers about what bullying is, its harmful effects for everyone as well as how to escape being a victim of bullying. Through powerpoint presentations as well as distribution of flyers and pamphlets to the student body on the subject, the school environment has become much more sensitive to bullying and the importance of eliminating it.
This is a campaign in line with the Anti-Bullying Act of 2012. The references included Cartoon Network, Chris Tiu's blog and advocacy in promoting a bully-free campus and those listed under references. TAKE A STAND, EXTEND A HELPING HAND!

The French Revolution, which began in 1789, was a period of radical social and political upheaval in France. It marked the decline of absolute monarchies, the rise of secular and democratic republics, and the eventual rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. This revolutionary period is crucial in understanding the transition from feudalism to modernity in Europe.

Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.

2. Who or What Is A Bully?
A BULLY is a person who tries to (or even) hurt
others by:
Making them feel uncomfortable.
Kicking, hitting, pushing, tripping, or doing other
mean things to them.
Name-calling.
Spreading nasty rumors.
The bully hurts the other person over and over.
Nobody deserves to be bullied. EVER
3. Types Of Bullying
Verbal Bullying:
Saying MEAN things such as:
Name Calling
• By saying “LOSER!!!” or “You’re FAT!” or
“Your momma is UGLY!
Threatening you
• By saying “Wait until after school …”
4. Types Of Bullying
Physical Bullying
– Hitting, kicking, biting, scratching, pushing,
tripping someone down on purpose
– Anyone that hurts someone by touching
them is physical bullying
– this is also a criminal offence so
REMEMBER nobody is allowed to hit anyone
5. Types Of Bullying
Indirect Bullying
– Ignoring someone
• Leaving someone out or not allowing them to join in a
game
– Spreading Rumours
• Talking about someone “behind their back” often
making up stories or saying things that are not true
– “The bad eyes”
• someone glaring or giving you threatening looks (this
could be very difficult to prove but can be just as
distressing)
6. Types Of Bullying
Technological Bullying
– Internet abuse
• Using social networking sites to show embarrassing pictures,
embarrass others, set up groups and encourage others to take
part in bullying online
– Instant Messenger
– Chat rooms
• Using chat rooms to spread gossip and hurt peoples feelings
– Abusive text messages
• sending nasty text messages to intimidate someone
– “Happy Slapping”
• this is when you use a phone or a video camera and film someone
being slapped or attacked unknowingly
– Silent or abusive phone calls
7. How does the person being BULLIED feel?
The person being bullied feels that he or she
can do nothing to stop it because:
• He or she might feel smaller or weaker than the bully.
• He or she might feel outnumbered by the bully and the
bully's friends.
• He or she often feels very sad, but does not know how to
change the situation.
• He or she might feel there is no help:
– No one to talk to.
– No one is standing up for him or her.
Bullies can be BOYS or GIRLS!!!
8. Who do BULLIES pick on?
• Often, bullies are bigger kids, so they pick
on:
Kids they feel are smaller
Kids they think won't stand up to them
Kids that have few friends to stand up for them
• Almost everyone will be affected by bullying
during their life
This can be as a child or young person
It can happen as an adult in work
It can even be an elderly person in the community
9. Why do BULLIES do what they do?
– Sometimes they think that they will win or get
what they want.
– Sometimes they want to impress or entertain
their friends.
– Sometimes they enjoy feeling power over
someone because sometimes they are being
bullied by someone else!
– Sometimes they do not even realize that they
are hurting the other person.
REMEMBER you should never have to say, “I was only messin’ wit ya” they
should already know!
10. Are you a BULLY?
• Do You Ever …
Make fun of others to get other people to laugh?
Physically hurt someone?
• Hitting people is assault and is a criminal offence
• Do not think that hitting people makes you look hard or clever
• Talking through problems takes more courage and shows you are growing up
Damaged or taken other people’s things.
• If you take things from people this is stealing and also against the law.
Ignore people, or leave them out of things you and you friends do?
• If you see this going on, be the better person and ask him or her would they
like to sit with you or play
• If your answer to these questions is YES then you are a BULLY.
• Think and ask yourself,
“Would I want someone else to do these things to me? “
If the answer is NO, then STOP and APOLOGISE for what
you have done and do not do it anymore.
