Effects of the BP Oil Spill
Four years ago from today, the Deepwater Horizon oil rig exploded and sunk, killing eleven people.
Underwater cameras showed that the pipe was leaking oil and gas about 40 miles from the coast of
Louisiana. This leak would eventually release about 4.9 million barrels of oil into the Gulf before it
would be capped 87 days later. Immediately after the explosion, workers from Transocean, BP, and the
government attempted to control the spread of oil to the coast by using oil booms and chemical
dispersants to break down underwater oil. However, these methods had problems. First, oil booms
only stop the spread of surface oil. While that sounds good, lots of the oil was beneath the surface and
the booms did nothing to stop the spread of this oil. Second, the chemical dispersants used to break
down the underwater oil could be just as harmful to marine life as the oil was. Over 1.84 million
gallons of Corexit dispersant were used in the Gulf. Use of the dispersant was described as the most
effective and fast moving tool for minimizing shoreline impact . Despite these claims, an analysis
conducted by Toxipedia showed that the dispersant could contain cancer causing agents, hazardous
toxins and endocrine disrupting chemicals. Scientists were concerned that the dispersants made a spill
even more toxic, increasing the danger to wildlife. The dangers are even greater when poured into the
source of a spill, because they are picked up by the current and washed through the Gulf. The oil

Comparing Charlie And The Chocolate Factory And Charlie...
Film Comparison
In 1971, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory was released, based on Dahl s novel, Charlie and the
Chocolate Factory . In 2005, its remake was released, under the name Charlie and the Chocolate
Factory. After watching and analysing both films, it is a popular opinion that the filmmakers
responsible for creating the remake, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory have made use of story
elements, including story progression, cause and effect, point of view, structuring of time, setting and
characters more effectively to engage the audience more when compared to the original film, Willy
Wonka and the Chocolate Factory .
Character creation and development is a necessary element that is used by filmmakers to engage
audiences. Audiences watch films to see characters change through their experiences and characters
need to be memorable so an audience remains engaged by the film. While both films share the same
characters, there are noticeable differences. In Charlie and the Chocolate Factory , the characters are
obviously playing to extremes. Each character has their niche, and that is their defining trait. For
example, Charlie is poor, Wonka is extremely eccentric, Veruca is stuck up, Augustus is a glutton,
Violet is a winner and Mike is a gamer. In Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory , the basic idea is
the same, however the characters aren t as memorable. However, both films shape their characters
through their appearances. For example, Augustus is quite large, reflecting the fact that he likes to eat
and Charlie looks hungry, suggesting to the audience that he is quite poor and does not get enough to
eat. It is the opinion of many that taking the characters to the extremes engages the audience better
than allowing them to be less defined. Yet, the filmmakers also create characters through their use of
settings, causing the audience to become further engaged in the texts.
In both films, the settings share similar purposes. This purpose being to create conflict as well as
allowing the audience to assume certain things about characters, background, context, etc. However it
is a shared opinion that the remake, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory uses setting more effectively.

The Power Of Language
The Power of Language
Language is often defined as a system of communication, a way for humans to interact with one
another. Language itself can hold a great amount of power. It can express one s emotion, show love or
hate, and could give meaning. For example an object has no identification unless the power of
language is wielded to provide it a name based on its ability and function. Language often has a great
influence on culture and religion. This is shown greatly in the cultures of the Hebrews and the Greeks
which are known for their famous texts Genesis and The Metamorphoses , two pieces of literature that
explains the creation of man from different ways of belief. The book of Genesis from the Hebrew
Bible is used in the practice of Judaism and Christianity and is the most well known text of this
culture. It is also believed to be the very first book written in the Bible. The Metamorphosis is a story
taken from what is called Greek Mythology, where multiple Gods are believed to exist and each of
them holding power over different things. Both texts use the power of language in different ways to
express emotion and bring things to life.
Normally, words are used in language as communication, and a way to describe objects. Objects
usually appear before words. Things are usually seen first, then they are named, described, and given a
meaning. However that does not seem to be the case in the Book of Genesis. In Genesis, God spoke
the world into existence. Before

Essay About Area 51
According to the article, What Do You Know about Area 51? , several people argued that they witness
some paranormal activities in Area 51. Area 51 is a facility located in Nevada for developing aviation
technology. There is no proof explaining why the paranormal happenings are coming from there.
Nevertheless, the witnesses claim that these happenings are all related to the aliens. Additionally, they
assume the high government officials would have communicated with the aliens in Area 51. The
evidences are unidentified flying objects that they witnessed; however, the flying objects have not
been identified. Although their evidence has not been proven, people still believe that there are
paranormal happenings of aliens. The facility s high security ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

The evidence of the claims is not credible is the first point that the article violets from the Baloney
Detection Kit. The believers were not skeptical about their claims and they did not try to figure out if
their claims were scientifically proven. They just argue that the unidentified flying objects they
witnessed are a piece of valid evidence for their claims. Moreover, the flying objects, or what they
claimed as their evidences, have not been identified yet. The article does not state where they got the
sources of people who saw specious activities happening in Area 51. An unverified claim is also
infringing one of Shermer s ten Baloney Detection Kit questions, since their claims have not yet been
confirmed by anyone else. In addition, the believers violated the rules of science. The rules of science
include observe, predict, test, interpret, and communicate. They first observed the flying objects
around the facility. Then, the believers started to predict their hypothesis that there were aliens in Area
51. However, they did not test or exam their hypothesis to identify the objects. Also, they should have
gathered data and analyzed them to verify their claims. Lastly, they have not published their study for
peer review. Instead, the believers just rumored around. Therefore, this article has not used any of the
scientific methods to prove their

The Business of ShareAll
1. Business objectives of ShareAll:
* Increase public awareness of the services ShareAll is providing;
* Motivate people to participate more actively in collaborative consumption.
In conclusion, the ultimate goal of a for profit ShareAll company is to increase the number of players
and their activity that will subsequently result in higher profit compared to the one, the company
generated prior to gamifying its system.
2. Delineate target behaviors
The first target behavior the company wants to encourage (which is related to its objective of raising
public awareness) is to see more people joining ShareAll by creating their accounts. The metric that
will allow us to measure this behavior is pretty obvious the number of created and existing accounts.
Besides that, the company should strive, on the one hand, to motivate players to share more products
(cars, houses, etc.) and on the other hand, to use shared items more frequently. This behavior
corresponds to the company s objective of motivating people to participate more actively in
collaborative consumption. In this case, the metric that will be used for measurement is the number of
matched deals that the system has generated by bringing sellers and buyers together.
Lastly, ShareAll will aim at encouraging players to generate, trade, and spend more Shares which is
directly connected with the company s goal of profit maximization. The metric that will be used in this
case is the number of generated/traded/spent Shares

Father Figures In Romeo And Juliet
Father figures in our life are very important while developing our characteristics and morals. When we
are little we look up to our fathers for advice and guidance on how we should act. As that would be the
social normality now in the twentieth century, in the olden day such as when Romeo and Juliet was
written and performed, the father would be a ruler and forced to work to the extreme so the son or
daughter would not have a full father figure. They could find a father figure in another person such as
Romeo did with Friar Laurence. Romeo looked to Friar Laurence with respect that a father would
receive, he could ask for any advice and he could go to him with any issue. To Romeo, Friar Laurence
was a fatherly figure there to support Romeo s

The Dormant Threat of Smallpox
Introduction/Background/History: Small Pox is an infectious disease that causes a fever and rash. The
term pox comes from the Latin word for spotted. It also refers to the raised bumps that appear on the
face and body of an infected person. Small Pox is cause by the Variola virus that appeared many years
ago. There are two rudimentary patterns of small pox: Variola minor and Variola major, which is the
worst and most common of the two. The earliest known death was Egyptian Pharaoh Ramses. Could it
be a coincidence that the disease also originated from Eygpt? Edward Jenner was the man in 1796. He
was experimenting and proved that small pox was closely related to cow pox. He would then make a
key breakthrough in his discovery by concluding that it would protect against smallpox.
Small Pox out breaks have been going on ever since the Egyptians; however, eradication of the
disease has become a worldwide look. The last case of the disease in the United States was in 1949.
Somalia was the last outbreak in 1977 before stoppage of the vaccine began. People felt like it was not
necessary to get the vaccine for prevention. The only place you can find the disease is in laboratories.
However, after September 11th 2001, there is intensified concern with the variola virus. The U.S.
government has fears that it might be used as an agent of bioterrorism. Any signs of Small Pox
outbreaks with have many apprehensions of a terrorist attack.

Stockholm Syndrome
This documentary caught my attention right from the opening lines. People, in general, do not like to
admit when they are wrong, so when the narrator began by claiming that the entire set of beliefs he
had grown up with and lived his life by were wrong and untrue it made me stop and consider how that
would affect a person. To have your entire way of thinking be proven invalid would be an unsettling
situation to put it simply. I could not begin to imagine how that would feel, but I tried to keep this
thought in mind as I continued with the rest of the documentary as it explored complex ideas
involving education, employment, and obedience. As someone who is pursuing a higher education by

evaluate and consider the information being presented to you. There were times I would have to
rewind just to give my thoughts a second to catch up, and in that sense, the film fully accomplished its
goal. In discussing complicated ideas such as education, employment, and obedience it showed me
just how narrow my scope of the world is, and I think I can better understand what the narrator meant
and how he felt when he said: almost everything I was brought up to believe turns out to be

Relative Dominance In Pre-Settlement Ecosystems
Table 1 depicts the relative dominance calculated by using our class data. To do this, the basal area
was calculated per individual tree followed by the basal area for each species. Relative dominance was
calculated by dividing the basal area per species by the total basal area. From my calculations, the
basal area was 99.97%, relatively close to the expected 100%. In table 2, the Shannon Diversity Index
was calculated, that is, the proportion of a species abundance times the natural log of that proportion,
summed for all species. The calculated value, 4.7977, is reflective of a relatively diverse location.
Pertaining to table 1, the Gleditsia triacanthos with the DBH of 27 had the highest individual basal

Firstly, the amount availability of light, nutrients, and water have a strong impact on what is able or
unable to thrive. As the level of available resources fluctuates, so will the species diversity. Secondly,
environmental change is a possibility. Without it, a vast range of diversity amongst a certain area
would not be possible. Lastly, competition within species is a common occurrence. If the level of
resources begins to change, it is likely the surviving species will begin to differ as well ultimately
leading to a change in

Rejection In Frankenstein
As a novel of ideas, Frankenstein poses questions about the ambiguously luring nature of knowledge
and creation. It prompts the universal question of the responsibility a creator has to its creation. We as
humans are a product of our upbringing and our instincts at the same time. What happens when its
creator rejects what it creates, and what is the creature to do with itself when it faces rejection? I will
look at this from a philosophical standpoint, taking an intertextual approach.
In Mary Shelley s Frankenstein, Victor, a young scientist possesses unbridled ambition and resolutions
as fixed as fate (Shelly 7) that lead him on a quest for natural philosophy (Shelly 27), compelling him
to create a being that manifests itself into a monster. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Her mother Mary Wollstonecraft died while delivering Mary. A popular and active feminist and writer
in the eighteenth century, she comments on the parent s duty to its child in the eleventh chapter of her
1792 feminist philosophy Vindication of the Rights of Woman. She views the upbringing of children
as a right and elaborates, a right always includes a duty (Wollstonecraft). Wollstonecraft, although she
never was able to raise her daughter, argues passionately that it is the duty of a parent to show the
child how to act, and a good parent is one who sedulously endeavours to form the heart and enlarge
the understanding of his child (Wollstonecraft). She goes on to suggest that a child s behavior reflects
what has been shown to him of her. The affections of children, and weak people, are always selfish;
they love others, because others loved them, and not on account of their virtues. (Wollstonecraft). In
the case of Victor Frankenstein s child, (who can also be considered a weak person ) he is ignored and
neglected. The creature is not loved by others, and therefore does not know how to love. The rejection
that he faces from his creator is mimicked by society. He exudes the same malice he receives from
others around him. In Princeton University Professor Susan J. Wolfson s article What Makes a
Monster? she comments that Victor s character demonstrates monstrous egotism and his actions
symbolize monstrous failure of human responsibility (Wolfson). Frankenstein s selfishness and lack of
parental nurturing allow for his monster to become as repulsive on the inside as he appears on the
surface. Mary Shelley s husband Percy Shelley offers the criticism, Treat a person ill, and he will
become wicked (Bysshe Shelley). The monster becomes the way he does because of the way he is
treated. He is born innocent, but the harshness he receives from the world around him,

Rape of Women on College Campus
Free and easy sex prides itself on being commitment free, no emotional ties attached. Today, this idea
of leaving all emotions at the door is the supposedly, sophisticated choice on campus. It is now well
understood that traditional dating in college has mostly gone the way of the landline, replaced by
hooking up an ambiguous term that can signify anything from making out to oral sex to intercourse all
complete without the emotional entanglement of a real relationship. As times have changed, students
begin to view a relationship as too time consuming and something that no longer takes priority
amongst their busy, high achieving schedules. However, hooking up threatens the sexual, physical,
and psychological health of college age youth. Today s youth may want to think twice before engaging
in the prevalent hook up culture. Despite the popularity of positive feelings, hookups can include
negative outcomes including emotional and psychological injury, and even more concerning
consequences such as unintended rape. In order to protect our generation, and more specifically our
women, society must acknowledge the detrimental effects of a hook up culture to create a greater
understanding surrounding this risky sexual behavior and ensure a more powerful, positive presence
for women in our society. The combination of a society seeped in rape culture and an alcohol infused
hookup culture creates a compromising sexual environment where women have limited control,

The Depiction Of Unseen Crime Scene In Elsie s Business
Unseen Crime Scene
The scene within Elsie s Business that I found the most impactful to the narrative as a whole, by way
of the writing style, was the scene where Sheriff Parker discovers the body of Elsie Roberts. Unlike
most other scenes in the book, this one is written quite differently. In most other parts of the novel, the
reader is meant to listen to the story and make their own interpretations and conclusions regarding the
events of the novel based solely on the information given, particularly within the tales told by the
character of Oscar to the narrator (195). For the crime scene in the novel, Washburn s writing takes a
far different turn from interpretive and vague to analytical and exceptionally detailed.
Throughout the novel, Frances ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In effect, the simplicity of the information provides an easier story to follow and thus a smoother,
more basic array of details that the reader must interpret. However, this simplistic style is greatly
different from the one that Washburn chooses for the depiction of the crime scene.
As if to build up to the change in writing styles, Washburn begins the story of the crime scene with a
briefly detailed overview of the weather conditions and the time of year the murder occurs. They are
described as being a slow moving storm...bringing several inches of snow and the Saturday night after
New Year s Eve respectively (163). So the story goes, Sheriff Parker leaves the police station to make
his final rounds on Sunday morning just before he is to be relieved from his shift and, in the process,
comes upon the frozen body of Elsie where upon which the writing style takes an immediate shift. As
if recounting the obsessive detail of a scene within one of Arthur Conan Doyle s tales of the great
Sherlock Holmes, Washburn begins the scene s analysis through the emptiness of the scene,

Analysis Of The Movie Shaun Of The Dead
Post modernism can be seen as a turning against structuralism and the rigid thinking of genre. Shaun
of the Dead(Focus) is a postmodern film as a combination of two genres: horror and comedy. Horror
and comedy are both opposites but did very well together in this film. Shaun of the Dead is a post
modern as it had all of the elements of a horror film but is in fact a comedy. The film was directed and
written by Edgar Wright (Wright) and co written by Simon Peggs (Peggs). The film is a hybrid
romantic, zombie and a comedy. These genres contradict each other therefore resulting the film to be
seen as a comedy as these opposing genres are not normally combined with each other. Shaun of the
Dead follows a version of a horror film with codes by consisting blood, gore, zombies and isolation.
Instead of Vladimir Propp s character theory(Propp) the lead character of a cool and strong male lead,
there is an average lead age thirty something, who works at an electronic shop with his best friend
who plays video games all day on their couch. The average lead also doesn t want to take some
responsibility, so this makes him the anti hero. This adds another element of humor in the film because
of not having characteristics of typical hero. In the beginning of the film, Shaun is shown as the lead
character. His appearance is zombie like because of his behavior and lifestyle in a humorous way. The
ironic of that is the he is the human fighting against the zombies later on, not

What A Star That A Jerk
Introduction
The ability to identify and solve a workplace problem is an integral managing ability. Cliffe et al. s
article, What a Star What a Jerk, (2001) focuses on a manager in a new position who is having
problems with an aggressive, but talented, employee. Though the difficult worker in the article is a
subordinate, I view the manager, Jane, as the cause of most issues. Jane demonstrates that she is not
manager material by running to her old co worker with every problem, gossiping about her
subordinates, complaining about basic managerial duties, and handling insubordination poorly.
Through her behavior as a manager, Jane reminds me of Susan , a manager whom I recently had to
suffer through working under. Although my situation is not exactly like that in the article, I understand
how it feels to work for someone who acts inappropriately, causes conflict in the workplace, and lacks
crucial leadership skills.
Unifying With A New Team
Jane s biggest mistake in her new position is keeping herself connected to her old position through
communication with Rick, which ultimately disables her from fully merging into her new position.
Similarly, after Susan transferred to our store, she was constantly on the phone with a manager from
the store from which she transferred, sometimes ignoring incoming phone calls from customers and
talking poorly of employees on phones by the front door where she could be heard. Her resistance to
leaving her comfort zone made her seem withdrawn

The Greek Devil And The Greek God Pan
In Christianity, the Devil is represented as the founder of an empire on fire , an empire that struggles
against and counteracts the kingdom of God. The Devil is described as an entity who is filled with evil
power, but not enough power to overcome Christ if they were to duel. Though the Devil is not as
powerful as Christ, he s unfettered, given the designation of being the ultimate source of evil power.
Since the inception of Christianity, portrayals of the Devil have been fundamental in instilling fear
within the Christian population. The Devil s abilities and appearance has become feared by
approximately 31.5% of the world s population. As historians have had access to the past that they
haven t had before, it s been discovered that the iconography of the Devil isn t necessarily original, but
rather, inspired from religions with an age older than Christianity. While there s an infinite amount of
possible sources available to attribute the iconography of the Christian Devil to, the Greek god Pan
provides source materials that show imagery and behavior similarities to the Christian Devil. By
analyzing texts by ancient authors such as Hesiod and Ovid, as well as paintings and sculptures
spanning multiple centuries, I will argue that the Greek god Pan s iconography and behavior was used
as inspiration for the Christian Devil.
Before discussing the similarities between the Christian Devil and the Greek god Pan, it s fundamental
to have an understanding of a basic overview of

Desicions Without Grandpa
As another Team Meeting broke up, Steven plodded back to his desk where his projections for the
quarter ahead were waiting to be completed. He gazed out the hermetically sealed windows which
overlooked the sprawling city, his eyes searching for green spaces.
He sighed. He had thought transferring to the City from the village would be more exciting and
challenging but it had not lived up to his expectations and he was frustrated at the endless meetings
and emphasis on figures and targets. He was also missing his friends and family as he tried to settle
into a new life. City people rushed everywhere and appeared busy and always having somewhere to
go. He felt invisible.
He could never imagine walking along any street in his home village and not speaking to a single
person. Older folks knew him either as John and Nettie s son or Peter s grandson. Others knew him
from school or shared activities. Almost everyone who passed by his Grandpa s workshop, popped
their head in the ever open door to call out a greeting.
He pictured his Grandpa s workshop in the ivy clad stone building attached to the family home. He
could see the dust motes dancing in the sunlight streaming through the open door; Grandpa sitting in

Martyrs To X-Rays
Martyrs To The X Rays The discovery of X rays was costly. Many lost their lives in the process and
those who survived with severe physical deformities were considered fortunate. Their determination is
inspiring and their work was a life changer.
The Beginning Wilhelm Conrad Roentgen discovered X rays on November 8, 1895. About 14 days
after Roentgen first noticed radiation activity, a man by the name of Friedrich Walkhoff performed the
first dental X ray. He did the X ray on himself first for twenty five minutes and then on patients for
thirty. Mr. Walkhoff only noticed hair loss on his patients around the exposed area, nothing he
considered significant (Sansare, Khanna, Karjodkar, 2011, p. 1). Minor effects of radiation were first

It was not until 1904 when William Rollins leaded the tube housing, installed the collimator, and did
many experiments on pregnant guinea pigs to conclude that X rays can kill fetus . Rollins was the first
to give many contributions to radiation protection. In 1907 an X ray manufacturer by the name of
Rome Wagner had the first idea of film badges. He would carry a photographic plate in his pocket to
see if he was getting too much exposure and then develop it each night. Wagner was unable to perfect
his idea because he died six months later from cancer (Kathern, Ziemer, 1980, p. 3). In the 1920 s
other methods of protection were introduced. The film badge became a routine monitoring device. The
unit to measure radiation was established and named the Roentgen, and the first tolerance dose was
created (Kathern, Ziemer 1980, p. 4). One might classify radiation protection as quite the traveler
since its journey transcended through both the Pioneer Era and the Era of Progress. Today s
advancements include a reduction in exposure time to milliseconds and a switch to digital (Sansare, et

The Dangers Of Heroism In Robinson Crusoe
Robinson Crusoe is a novel about a traveler which places the main character as a hero, and when it
comes to heroism, the reader wants to believe that what he reads is real. Everybody is willing to forget
its own reality when it comes to dive into an art, no matter if we are talking about literary work,
painting or cinematographic masterpieces. We are willing to accept what we read as the truth and to
forget every illogical element that could disturb us from our escape from life. This is what these works
are made of: to alter reality. It is clearly impossible for a human being to survive this long on a desert
island, especially if we follow every step of Robinson s journey. Growing plants and taming animals
seems so easy, such as building our own house out of a wrecked ship that we reach by swimming. It is

We consider that we read a narrator and not an author. The author is always non existent when it
comes to believe a book. So, when we read Robinson Crusoe, we read Robinson s words and not
Defoe s words. But how do we feel about Defoe being a character in this rewriting? It is as painting
him back in the picture and making him a character since the beginning. It feels as if we are watching
a battle confronting Foe against Foe and making him the culprit of all the lying. And now that he is
nothing but a character that ended up writing a book where he is his own narrator, who is the first
narrator ever? We could actually thought about Suzan right away, since she is the main voice in Foe.
But when we focus a little more, she is nothing more than a silenced woman, pushed outside by a
canon of a male authorship . What could have been seen as a feminist book is taking a complete u
turn: Suzan, who is first represented as a strong woman surviving on an island and who is ready for
her story to be heard, ends up being manipulated by Foe who clearly makes her understand that he

What Is The Relative Sodium Concentration Of Osmosis
I believe that an average potato has a relative sodium chloride concentration of .17 moles. I also
believe that an average potato has a relative glucose concentration of .95 moles. I have drawn these
conclusions based on the data my classmates and I have collected as well as my knowledge of
osmosis.
When placed in various levels of sodium chloride solutions, the mass of the potatoes increased less the
higher the concentration of sodium was in a given solution. For example, when placed in a solution of
pure tap water, the potato cubes exhibited an average mass change of +7.466%. Next, when placed in
a solution with a molarity of .05, the potato cubes exhibited an average mass change of +3.442%.
Finally, when placed in a solution with a molarity of .15, the potato cubes exhibited an average mass
change of +1.2%. When the potato cubes exhibit an average mass change of 0, it will mean that the
sodium chloride concentration is the same, both in the water and the potato. When the potato had a
mass change, it meant that the sodium chloride concentration was hypotonic, or lower inside the
potato cells than the water. However, as the mass change percentage grew lower and lower, the
difference in sodium chloride concentration also grew smaller. When the potato and water have the
same concentration, they will be isotonic, which means there is the same concentration both in the
potato and in the water. This will not cause the potato to change mass because the potato cells do not

What Is An Operating System Essay
Operating Systems What is an operating system The operating system is responsible for controlling all
of the tasks and processes. Operating systems consists of a collection of programs, with each having a
specific task allocated to it. These programs are designed to make the computer system run as
efficiently as possible. The most commonly used operating systems are Mac OS, Windows and Linux.
What Operating systems do · Allow users to interact with the machine (e.g. selecting programs). ·
Allocate space in memory for programs. · Run programs (transfer instructions for memory to
processor then executing them). · Manage the storing of data. · Management of input/output devices.
Difference Operating Systems Windows Windows is the most widely used Operating System in the
world, It s initial introduction was in 1981 as a command line interface; the GUI (graphical user
interface) was introduced in 1985 and has seen 26 different versions. Mac OS In 1984 Apple released
its first OS, which became known as Mac OS as of 1997. The original OS was a fork of Apples older
OS Lisa which was, at the time, extremely advanced. Linux Linux began in 1991 as a personal project
by Lines Torvalds, he set out to create a new, free Operating System. Since then it has grown from an
OS containing a few C files to having over 18 million lines of source code and available under the
GNU General Public License. The GNU license guarantees that

Beowulf Modern Day Hero Essay
Modern day people created superhero as character fighting criminal in order to protect the wellbeing
of their civilians. Beowulf is a anglo saxon hero showing many traits as a modern day superhero. His
bravery, selfless, and boasting makes him the true and first anglo saxon hero. Fighting villains to
ensure the safety of others having no fear also showing no care about his own safety show that he is a
true hero. Beowulf exemplifies himself as a anglo saxon hero showing his bravery and confidence by
fighting Grendel, Grendel s mother, and the dragon in order to protect his people from devastation.
Beowulf has shown his determination to fight villain that normal mortals wouldn t stand a chance
against. His boasting and confidence before he fights the Grendel and Grendel s mother displays why
Beowulf is a anglo saxon hero. I drove five great giants into chains, chased all of that race from the
earth. I swam in the blackness of night, hunting monsters out of the ocean, and killing them one by
one; death was my errand and the fate they had earned. He shows his determination and confidence in
beating Grendel by showing example of him beating 4 of the greatest giant and putting them in to
chains. Also Beowulf is willing to fight Grendel without a weapon. In addition to beating Grendel he

Symbols In The Poisonwood Bible
There are various depictions of opposite ideas in Barbra Kingsolver s The Poisonwood Bible .
Symbols of good and evil, lights and darks, sick and healthy, and social and natural balances are
reoccurring images throughout Kingsolver s work. Among these images is the one shown of Nathan
Price and his counterpart Brother Fowles. Nathan Price is a typical hardcore southern Baptist from
South Carolina. Without even asking for his family s opinion, Nathan decides that he wants to go to
the Congo to be a missionary; thus plunging them blindly into Hell. Nathan continues firm with his
plans wielding the motive to redeem his guilt from his WWII days. Unfortunately for the Price family
and the Congolese, Nathans arrogance and selfish behavior doesn t ... Show more content on

His stubborn nature gives him the idea that the Congolese people are naked, uneducated savages. He
has no ear for what his family says, or what their opinions are, and has a very cram the word of God
down your throat way of preaching. Nathan is completely ignorant to the Congolese way of life, and
language, that he doesn t realize that he calls Jesus poisonwood in a mispronunciation of the
Congolese word for precious. Nathan wanted to baptize the people of the Congo to redeem his guilt in
the eyes God. Nathan felt that he was doing God a favor by taking his family to the Congo and trying
to convert as many people as possible. Furthermore; Nathan Price walks into the Congo with a
Western attitude completely failing to adapt to the Congolese culture and ideas (even failing to realize
that the people were afraid of the river because of crocodiles) making them less accepting of him and
his teachings. Brother Fowles acts as Nathan s foil and depicts the other side of the Christian religion,
and how a missionary can be successful. Brother Fowles is married to a Congolese woman and
explains how the men and women of the Congo are actually very religious and not just the tickets to
heaven that Nathan sees them as. Brother Fowles has pantheistic ideas which automatically make the
Congolese more accepting of the religion that he is preaching to

Solar System Advantages
There are many different items that make up the solar system, and they are all classified very
differently. Two of the most important items in our solar system are the planets and the moons. They
differ in geologic activity, composition, interior structure, magnetic fields, and atmospheres. There are
multiple probe missions, both past and present, that support these concepts. There are physical factors
and characteristics that are important in determining the property of the items. In this paper, I will
discuss all of these topics as well as what benefits I think there are so studying other worlds as well as
the benefits I see to studying the solar system and why. The moon has no real atmosphere so there can
be no weatherly erosion, which is an issue some planets have. The atmosphere is basically comprised
of gases that surround the moon. The moon has an extremely low gravity and cools more rapidly than
some planets. It does not have any plate tectonics. The surface of the moon has been created from
years of impact by craters and volcanoes. The moon is often comprised of the crust, the mantle, and
the core. The moon is best observed through telescope observations, however; the moon has always
been subject to lunar landings, lunar samples, and orbiting space crafts. The moon has a very weak
magnetic field in comparison to planets such as the Earth. The moon does not have a dipolar magnetic
field. The crust is where most magnetization occurs. The first moon

The prince Essay
Niccolo Machiavelli s The Prince attempts to explain the necessary tactics and required knowledge a
ruler must attain in order to gain and maintain a successful reign. The novel serves as an abstract
manual, addressing the definition of a good/bad ruler by placing emphasis on the required military
organization, the character a ruler must posses, and the success that could be attained if a ruler should
follow the guide. The scope in which the book is written is that of a scholarly observant. Machiavelli
places his findings and observations of history, as well as the needs of the people so the information
may serve the prince as a tool, that once implemented will create and maintain a powerful state. The
guide places a particular ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Warning that Mercenaries and Auxiliaries are useless and dangerous... (40) any use of either will surly
hinder, even destroy success. Mercenaries are described to be power hungry, undisciplined and
disloyal; lacking any fear of God therefore, placing no faith in their fellow man. Truly, they are
pretenders whom face a friend with bravery, yet are cowardly upon battle. Consequently, Auxiliaries
whom are called for defense and assistance are also ill advised by Machiavelli. Auxiliaries are the
other useless kind of troops... (44) here he uses the example of Pope Julius II and his failure upon
battle, concluding that anyone who doesn t want to succeed should use this form of recourse. With
both of Mercenaries and Auxiliaries there is no loyalty nor sense of fellowship, which are essential in
military success. The importance of trust and loyalty in a military force must also be exemplified by a
leader; ...armed forces must be under the control of either a prince or a republic: a prince should
assume personal command and captain his troops himself. (41) there must be a relationship that binds
soldiers to a purpose. A purpose, that leads to the understanding that in order for a goal to be attained,
a unit must be formed bound by trust and comradeship. If a ruler is able to attain a fighting force to be
as one, then he is proven to be a good ruler. Machiavelli uses examples such as Rome

Theme Of Profit In Great Expectations
When one gains immense profit at the loss of their soul, all is lost in the end. This is the point that
Dickens is trying to make with the main character in his novel Great Expectations. Profit does not
mean loss in the literal sense, but when you gain something materialistic at the loss of something
sentimental, profit means loss. In the novel, Pip, the main character, leaves his home and moves to
England and makes immense profit in money, only to lose it all. In Great Expectations, the giving of
the soul at the gain of the world is explored through Pip and Miss Havisham. Pip moves to England
and becomes wealthy; Pip now thinks that money is the best thing in the world. Pip then returns to his
home and confesses his love to Estella, Estella doesn t love him back. Pip now realizes that money
cannot buy happiness. Miss. Havisham, on the other hand, is the aftermath of gaining materialistic
things at the loss of her soul. When we first meet her, she is dressed as if she was going to a wedding,
but most of her clothes are scattered about. She already knows that money did not fulfill her dreams
and now there is nothing to be done about it. In Great Expectations we explore Pip s ups and downs as
he moves throughout the world trying to understand the hardships that come with it. Pip starts as a
cheerful but fearful young boy growing up in nineteenth century England. Pip claims that his sister
abused him and made him anxious of the world, he does this by saying My sister s

Symptoms And Treatment Of Delirium
Delirium is an acute change in brain function that can be accompanied by inattention and either a
change in cognition or perceptual disturbances (Allen and Alexander, 2012). Delirium in critical care
patients is very common, it actually occurs in 2 out of 3 intensive care patients who are on a ventilator,
but often goes undetected because delirium monitoring is considered too time consuming or unreliable
(Reade and Finfer, 2014). Intensive care unit (ICU) patients that have delirium spend more days on a
ventilator, remain on sedation longer, have increased chance for infections, have longer hospital stays,
and higher mortality rates during their hospital admission and in the 6 months after.
According to Eastwood, Peck, Bellomo, Baldwin, and Reade (2012), most of these patients are also
left with permanent cognitive problems that they struggle with for years. Not only does delirium cause
more issues with the patients, it can cost the hospital more money due to increased length of stay,
hospital acquired infections such as pneumonia, and re admissions. Studies have shown that using the
confusion assessment method (CAM) every shift, and performing the assessment correctly, can help
detect delirium in ICU patients earlier. When delirium is caught early the healthcare team can initiate
interventions to decrease the severity of delirium and work towards better outcomes for the patient.

Support Group That I Had Been At The Same Time
For this assignment I chose to go to a support group that I had been to before. I chose to do this
because I wanted to see what would change or what the differences, were between this time and the
first time I had went to this meeting. This assignment was very interesting and very difficult for me at
the same time. The main reason it was so difficult for me, was I still am not driving too often. So this
setback gave me more hurtles to jump over and through, just so I could get to a meeting. Because of
this I really struggled trying to find a support group that would actually allow me to attended meetings
at the times were people were available to drive me. Then once again it hit me, like before, I finely
asked my friend if her mother who is a nurse could help me out. My friend s mother said yes. She
knew of a caregiver group a caregiver group for cancer and was even willing to drive me to the group.
The only terms were that I would feel out a paper saying I agreed to the conditions of the group. And
the information shard in the meeting at no circumstances was to be talked about outside the group. For
this assignment I attended the Cancer Caregivers Support Group in the clinical center at Froedtert
Hospital. The meeting took place on October 22nd 2016 at night 5:30pm to 7:00pm at night. This
caregiver group was a group of fifteen to twenty people who specifically were planning on becoming
a caregiver for a family member who was battling cancer. The meeting was held in a

Veterans Pros And Cons
Veterans Benefits:
A Disservice to Veterans as The Backlog Continues I WANT YOU FOR THE US ARMY was the
slogan on the most famous poster according to its creator James Montgomery Flagg. According to the
Library of Congress website This poster tells all of America to wake up and do their part for the war
effort (para. 5). This poster of Uncle Sam was used to call upon every man, woman, and child to
endure the personal sacrifice and domestic adjustments to further the national agenda. This
encouraged rationing, conservation and sacrifice. Uncle Sam spoke not only to the sacrifice of the
soldiers and families of World Wars I II but continued with the Korean War, the Vietnam War and into
the current day s wars and military service. According ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
American veterans need more government funding because they have served their country with honor
and their benefits should be commensurate with the sacrifices that they and their families have made.
This delay is a tremendous strain on those who have medical problems due to their service to our
country. There are numerous medical issues that can be caused by the trauma of fighting in battle.
High blood pressure can be just as troubling as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). While the
effects might not be the same, the fact that an American citizen develops any type of medical problem
in service to this country supports the argument that we should be taking care of these veterans
medical issue as expeditiously as possible. In some cases the possibility of death exists. In an
investigation by CNN, Scott Bronstein and Drew Griffin found a tragic story. Seventy one year old
navy vet Thomas Breen was very proud of his military service and would only go to the VA for
treatment. On September 28, 2013 with blood in his urine and a history of cancer went to the VA
emergency room in Phoenix, Arizona where they examined him and sent him home. His family
obtained a chart that clearly stated the urgency of Thomas needing to see a urologist or a primary care
physician within one week. He did get an appointment with a rheumatologist for his

Minor Characters Impact on Willy Loman in Arthur...
Minor Characters Impact on Willy Loman in Arthur Miller s play, Death of a Salesman
In the Arthur Miller play Death of a Salesman, Willy Loman comes in contact with several characters,
many of whom prompt him to examine his past as well as his conscience. Charley s son Bernard is
such a character. Lacking dimension and depth of character, Bernard functions primarily as a foil to
expose Willy s tragic and pathetic nature.
The other characters have no real interaction with Willy that would allow for development. During
Willy s first flashback, Bernard appears only to remind Biff of the Regents exam. Willy refers to
Bernard as a pest and an anemic, and Biff mimics his father by saying that Bernard is liked, but not
well liked. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Willy s predictions regarding Bernard are proven wrong later in the play. Bernard is successful; he is a
respected lawyer preparing to argue a case before the Supreme Court. In the stage directions, Arthur
Miller describes Bernard as a quiet, earnest, but self assured young man. When Willy meets him in
Charley s office, Bernard is reserved and polite. Aware of the success that Bernard has obtained, Willy
shows repect for him by calling him a brilliant man. While he may be happy for Bernard s well being,
Willy can t help but be reminded of his son s failures. He even asks of Charley how it is that Bernard
has accomplished such feats in spite of Charley s lack of interest. Charley hints that his son thrives
because of this neglect.
If Bernard s characterization is flat, then it can be reasoned that his creation is for a singular purpose.
Bernard is the symbol of success, which makes Willy s life all the more tragic for failing to recognize
this. Because Bernard s actions are mainly directed towards Willy, Bernard can also be considered an
extension of Willy s conscience. For example, when the two are in Charley s office speculating as to
why Biff didn t finish school, Bernard mentions that Biff lost his initiative after he came back from
Boston. This causes Willy to become angry and later to recall that night when his son discovered the
affair. Here, Bernard acts as a catalyst, causing Willy to realize the

Analysis Of Paul Cezanne s Mont Sainte Victoire
One of the most influential painters of the twentieth century was Paul Cezanne. He was willing to
break the traditionally accepted artistic practice in order to better portray his artistic creativity.
Cezanne was became part of the movement that followed the Impressionists called the Post
Impressionism movement. The artists who were the driving forces behind this movement were
Gauguin, Van Gogh, Seurat, and Cezanne. These artists were placed in this grouping because they
were the avant garde artists of the time period, who wanted to be able to express their emotions rather
than simply representing what they saw. Cezanne s Mont Sainte Victoire seen from The Bibemus
Quarry was painted in 1985. Mont Sainte Victoire is a mountain that is in the South of France and
overlooks the Aix en Provence, which happens to be the hometown of Paul Cezanne. This work
exemplifies the Post Impressionistic techniques because Cezanne utilized the avant garde techniques,
while at the same time demonstrating the relationship between the artist and the work. This work
embodies the period style because it contains avant garde geometric shapes to define the forms, colors,
and interpretations that were important to the Post Impressionists. First off, the harshness of the lines
goes hand in hand with the shapes that exist in the work. The shapes tend to be simplified shapes,
which demonstrates that Cezanne wanted things to appear as if they could be broken down. Cezanne
utilizes an array of geometric

The Five Kingdom Classification System
In 1758 a man called Carl Linnaeus proposed the two kingdom classification system. This system
separated all living things into two categories called kingdoms. The two kingdoms were plante
(plants) and animalia (animals).this system was the basis to our classification system today (the five
kingdom system).
In 1674 the first unicellular organisms were discovered by a man called Antoine van Leeuwenhoek.
This discovery was due to his improvement to the microscope. This improvement meant an object
could be magnified over 200 times, hence why micro organisms were found. This improvement in the
microscope also assisted into the discovery of prokaryotes and eukaryotes. This discovery meant that
two new kingdoms could be created, kingdom monera and kingdom Protista. The improvement of the
microscope has helped develop the two kingdom system into the five kingdom system it is today.
DNA sequencing is a process used to determine the order of the nucleotides of a gene. Dna
Sequencing has advanced extremely from almost a decade ago, due to the improvement of
bioinformatics. Bioinformatics is the use of computer technologies to manage and analyse biological
data. The improvement Bioinformatics has meant DNA sequencing has become much easier, faster
and more cost effective. The improvement of the DNA sequencing technique meant that taxonomists
could use DNA sequences as characteristics when classifying specimens. Using DNA sequences as
characteristics meant classifying microorganisms

Queer Anthropology
The American Anthropological Association decided in 2010 to remove the word science from the
statement of the long range plan. This decision caused a long standing debate in the anthropological
community to reawaken with a forceful start. Different anthropologists claim how removing science
allowed more sub divisions of anthropology to be included under the statement umbrella. Others claim
how it diminished the name of what anthropology was as a science. This argument questions how
anthropology will thrive or unravel if it moves away from the sciences and into other areas of interest.
First, the debate of what the nature of anthropology could be said to begin in the era of Franz Boas.
Franz Boas stated how he expected anthropologists ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

MLB Salary Cap Analysis
Three out of four of the most popular sports in America all have salary caps in their organization.
Salary caps are meant to keep the league competitive, control cost and increase overall league
revenues. Sports that are seen as more competitive and fun to watch will boost tv ratings which will
then lead to higher profits from their sales and advertisement. Without a salary cap, big named teams
that are popular and successful will have more money for free agency to stack their team, since they
can make the best offers. In the MLB there is not a salary cap, which puts teams like the New York
Yankees or the Los Angeles Dodgers that have more money than other teams in an advantage. You can

  • 2. Effects of the BP Oil Spill Four years ago from today, the Deepwater Horizon oil rig exploded and sunk, killing eleven people. Underwater cameras showed that the pipe was leaking oil and gas about 40 miles from the coast of Louisiana. This leak would eventually release about 4.9 million barrels of oil into the Gulf before it would be capped 87 days later. Immediately after the explosion, workers from Transocean, BP, and the government attempted to control the spread of oil to the coast by using oil booms and chemical dispersants to break down underwater oil. However, these methods had problems. First, oil booms only stop the spread of surface oil. While that sounds good, lots of the oil was beneath the surface and the booms did nothing to stop the spread of this oil. Second, the chemical dispersants used to break down the underwater oil could be just as harmful to marine life as the oil was. Over 1.84 million gallons of Corexit dispersant were used in the Gulf. Use of the dispersant was described as the most effective and fast moving tool for minimizing shoreline impact . Despite these claims, an analysis conducted by Toxipedia showed that the dispersant could contain cancer causing agents, hazardous toxins and endocrine disrupting chemicals. Scientists were concerned that the dispersants made a spill even more toxic, increasing the danger to wildlife. The dangers are even greater when poured into the source of a spill, because they are picked up by the current and washed through the Gulf. The oil ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Comparing Charlie And The Chocolate Factory And Charlie... Film Comparison In 1971, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory was released, based on Dahl s novel, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory . In 2005, its remake was released, under the name Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. After watching and analysing both films, it is a popular opinion that the filmmakers responsible for creating the remake, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory have made use of story elements, including story progression, cause and effect, point of view, structuring of time, setting and characters more effectively to engage the audience more when compared to the original film, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory . Character creation and development is a necessary element that is used by filmmakers to engage audiences. Audiences watch films to see characters change through their experiences and characters need to be memorable so an audience remains engaged by the film. While both films share the same characters, there are noticeable differences. In Charlie and the Chocolate Factory , the characters are obviously playing to extremes. Each character has their niche, and that is their defining trait. For example, Charlie is poor, Wonka is extremely eccentric, Veruca is stuck up, Augustus is a glutton, Violet is a winner and Mike is a gamer. In Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory , the basic idea is the same, however the characters aren t as memorable. However, both films shape their characters through their appearances. For example, Augustus is quite large, reflecting the fact that he likes to eat and Charlie looks hungry, suggesting to the audience that he is quite poor and does not get enough to eat. It is the opinion of many that taking the characters to the extremes engages the audience better than allowing them to be less defined. Yet, the filmmakers also create characters through their use of settings, causing the audience to become further engaged in the texts. In both films, the settings share similar purposes. This purpose being to create conflict as well as allowing the audience to assume certain things about characters, background, context, etc. However it is a shared opinion that the remake, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory uses setting more effectively. • 4. The Power Of Language The Power of Language Language is often defined as a system of communication, a way for humans to interact with one another. Language itself can hold a great amount of power. It can express one s emotion, show love or hate, and could give meaning. For example an object has no identification unless the power of language is wielded to provide it a name based on its ability and function. Language often has a great influence on culture and religion. This is shown greatly in the cultures of the Hebrews and the Greeks which are known for their famous texts Genesis and The Metamorphoses , two pieces of literature that explains the creation of man from different ways of belief. The book of Genesis from the Hebrew Bible is used in the practice of Judaism and Christianity and is the most well known text of this culture. It is also believed to be the very first book written in the Bible. The Metamorphosis is a story taken from what is called Greek Mythology, where multiple Gods are believed to exist and each of them holding power over different things. Both texts use the power of language in different ways to express emotion and bring things to life. Normally, words are used in language as communication, and a way to describe objects. Objects usually appear before words. Things are usually seen first, then they are named, described, and given a meaning. However that does not seem to be the case in the Book of Genesis. In Genesis, God spoke the world into existence. Before ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Area 51 is a facility located in Nevada for developing aviation technology. There is no proof explaining why the paranormal happenings are coming from there. Nevertheless, the witnesses claim that these happenings are all related to the aliens. Additionally, they assume the high government officials would have communicated with the aliens in Area 51. The believers were not skeptical about their claims and they did not try to figure out if their claims were scientifically proven. They just argue that the unidentified flying objects they witnessed are a piece of valid evidence for their claims. Moreover, the flying objects, or what they claimed as their evidences, have not been identified yet. The article does not state where they got the sources of people who saw specious activities happening in Area 51. An unverified claim is also infringing one of Shermer s ten Baloney Detection Kit questions, since their claims have not yet been confirmed by anyone else. In addition, the believers violated the rules of science. The rules of science include observe, predict, test, interpret, and communicate. They first observed the flying objects around the facility. Then, the believers started to predict their hypothesis that there were aliens in Area 51. However, they did not test or exam their hypothesis to identify the objects. Also, they should have gathered data and analyzed them to verify their claims. Lastly, they have not published their study for peer review. Instead, the believers just rumored around. • 6. The Business of ShareAll 1. Business objectives of ShareAll: * Increase public awareness of the services ShareAll is providing; * Motivate people to participate more actively in collaborative consumption. In conclusion, the ultimate goal of a for profit ShareAll company is to increase the number of players and their activity that will subsequently result in higher profit compared to the one, the company generated prior to gamifying its system. 2. Delineate target behaviors The first target behavior the company wants to encourage (which is related to its objective of raising public awareness) is to see more people joining ShareAll by creating their accounts. The metric that will allow us to measure this behavior is pretty obvious the number of created and existing accounts. Besides that, the company should strive, on the one hand, to motivate players to share more products (cars, houses, etc.) and on the other hand, to use shared items more frequently. This behavior corresponds to the company s objective of motivating people to participate more actively in collaborative consumption. In this case, the metric that will be used for measurement is the number of matched deals that the system has generated by bringing sellers and buyers together. Lastly, ShareAll will aim at encouraging players to generate, trade, and spend more Shares which is directly connected with the company s goal of profit maximization. The metric that will be used in this case is the number of generated/traded/spent Shares ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

When we are little we look up to our fathers for advice and guidance on how we should act. As that would be the social normality now in the twentieth century, in the olden day such as when Romeo and Juliet was written and performed, the father would be a ruler and forced to work to the extreme so the son or daughter would not have a full father figure. They could find a father figure in another person such as Romeo did with Friar Laurence. • 8. The Dormant Threat of Smallpox Introduction/Background/History: Small Pox is an infectious disease that causes a fever and rash. The term pox comes from the Latin word for spotted. It also refers to the raised bumps that appear on the face and body of an infected person. Small Pox is cause by the Variola virus that appeared many years ago. There are two rudimentary patterns of small pox: Variola minor and Variola major, which is the worst and most common of the two. The earliest known death was Egyptian Pharaoh Ramses. Could it be a coincidence that the disease also originated from Eygpt? Edward Jenner was the man in 1796. He was experimenting and proved that small pox was closely related to cow pox. He would then make a key breakthrough in his discovery by concluding that it would protect against smallpox. Small Pox out breaks have been going on ever since the Egyptians; however, eradication of the disease has become a worldwide look. The last case of the disease in the United States was in 1949. Somalia was the last outbreak in 1977 before stoppage of the vaccine began. People felt like it was not necessary to get the vaccine for prevention. The only place you can find the disease is in laboratories. However, after September 11th 2001, there is intensified concern with the variola virus. • 9. Stockholm Syndrome This documentary caught my attention right from the opening lines. People, in general, do not like to admit when they are wrong, so when the narrator began by claiming that the entire set of beliefs he had grown up with and lived his life by were wrong and untrue it made me stop and consider how that would affect a person. To have your entire way of thinking be proven invalid would be an unsettling situation to put it simply. To do this, the basal area was calculated per individual tree followed by the basal area for each species. Relative dominance was calculated by dividing the basal area per species by the total basal area. From my calculations, the basal area was 99.97%, relatively close to the expected 100%. In table 2, the Shannon Diversity Index was calculated, that is, the proportion of a species abundance times the natural log of that proportion, summed for all species. The calculated value, 4.7977, is reflective of a relatively diverse location. • 11. Rejection In Frankenstein As a novel of ideas, Frankenstein poses questions about the ambiguously luring nature of knowledge and creation. It prompts the universal question of the responsibility a creator has to its creation. We as humans are a product of our upbringing and our instincts at the same time. What happens when its creator rejects what it creates, and what is the creature to do with itself when it faces rejection? I will look at this from a philosophical standpoint, taking an intertextual approach. In Mary Shelley s Frankenstein, Victor, a young scientist possesses unbridled ambition and resolutions as fixed as fate (Shelly 7) that lead him on a quest for natural philosophy (Shelly 27), compelling him to create a being that manifests itself into a monster. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Her mother Mary Wollstonecraft died while delivering Mary. A popular and active feminist and writer in the eighteenth century, she comments on the parent s duty to its child in the eleventh chapter of her 1792 feminist philosophy Vindication of the Rights of Woman. She views the upbringing of children as a right and elaborates, a right always includes a duty (Wollstonecraft). Wollstonecraft, although she never was able to raise her daughter, argues passionately that it is the duty of a parent to show the child how to act, and a good parent is one who sedulously endeavours to form the heart and enlarge the understanding of his child (Wollstonecraft). She goes on to suggest that a child s behavior reflects what has been shown to him of her. The affections of children, and weak people, are always selfish; they love others, because others loved them, and not on account of their virtues. (Wollstonecraft). In the case of Victor Frankenstein s child, (who can also be considered a weak person ) he is ignored and neglected. The creature is not loved by others, and therefore does not know how to love. The rejection that he faces from his creator is mimicked by society. He exudes the same malice he receives from others around him. In Princeton University Professor Susan J. Wolfson s article What Makes a Monster? she comments that Victor s character demonstrates monstrous egotism and his actions symbolize monstrous failure of human responsibility (Wolfson). Frankenstein s selfishness and lack of parental nurturing allow for his monster to become as repulsive on the inside as he appears on the surface. Mary Shelley s husband Percy Shelley offers the criticism, Treat a person ill, and he will become wicked (Bysshe Shelley). The monster becomes the way he does because of the way he is treated. He is born innocent, but the harshness he receives from the world around him, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 12. Rape of Women on College Campus Free and easy sex prides itself on being commitment free, no emotional ties attached. Today, this idea of leaving all emotions at the door is the supposedly, sophisticated choice on campus. It is now well understood that traditional dating in college has mostly gone the way of the landline, replaced by hooking up an ambiguous term that can signify anything from making out to oral sex to intercourse all complete without the emotional entanglement of a real relationship. As times have changed, students begin to view a relationship as too time consuming and something that no longer takes priority amongst their busy, high achieving schedules. However, hooking up threatens the sexual, physical, and psychological health of college age youth. Today s youth may want to think twice before engaging in the prevalent hook up culture. Despite the popularity of positive feelings, hookups can include negative outcomes including emotional and psychological injury, and even more concerning consequences such as unintended rape. In order to protect our generation, and more specifically our women, society must acknowledge the detrimental effects of a hook up culture to create a greater understanding surrounding this risky sexual behavior and ensure a more powerful, positive presence for women in our society. The combination of a society seeped in rape culture and an alcohol infused hookup culture creates a compromising sexual environment where women have limited control, opening the ... • 13. The Depiction Of Unseen Crime Scene In Elsie s Business Unseen Crime Scene The scene within Elsie s Business that I found the most impactful to the narrative as a whole, by way of the writing style, was the scene where Sheriff Parker discovers the body of Elsie Roberts. Unlike most other scenes in the book, this one is written quite differently. In most other parts of the novel, the reader is meant to listen to the story and make their own interpretations and conclusions regarding the events of the novel based solely on the information given, particularly within the tales told by the character of Oscar to the narrator (195). For the crime scene in the novel, Washburn s writing takes a far different turn from interpretive and vague to analytical and exceptionally detailed. Throughout the novel, Frances ... • 14. Analysis Of The Movie Shaun Of The Dead Post modernism can be seen as a turning against structuralism and the rigid thinking of genre. Shaun of the Dead(Focus) is a postmodern film as a combination of two genres: horror and comedy. Horror and comedy are both opposites but did very well together in this film. Shaun of the Dead is a post modern as it had all of the elements of a horror film but is in fact a comedy. The film was directed and written by Edgar Wright (Wright) and co written by Simon Peggs (Peggs). The film is a hybrid romantic, zombie and a comedy. These genres contradict each other therefore resulting the film to be seen as a comedy as these opposing genres are not normally combined with each other. Shaun of the Dead follows a version of a horror film with codes by consisting blood, gore, zombies and isolation. Instead of Vladimir Propp s character theory(Propp) the lead character of a cool and strong male lead, there is an average lead age thirty something, who works at an electronic shop with his best friend who plays video games all day on their couch. The average lead also doesn t want to take some responsibility, so this makes him the anti hero. This adds another element of humor in the film because of not having characteristics of typical hero. • 15. What A Star That A Jerk Introduction The ability to identify and solve a workplace problem is an integral managing ability. Cliffe et al. s article, What a Star What a Jerk, (2001) focuses on a manager in a new position who is having problems with an aggressive, but talented, employee. Though the difficult worker in the article is a subordinate, I view the manager, Jane, as the cause of most issues. Jane demonstrates that she is not manager material by running to her old co worker with every problem, gossiping about her subordinates, complaining about basic managerial duties, and handling insubordination poorly. Through her behavior as a manager, Jane reminds me of Susan , a manager whom I recently had to suffer through working under. Although my situation is not exactly like that in the article, I understand how it feels to work for someone who acts inappropriately, causes conflict in the workplace, and lacks crucial leadership skills. Unifying With A New Team Jane s biggest mistake in her new position is keeping herself connected to her old position through communication with Rick, which ultimately disables her from fully merging into her new position. Similarly, after Susan transferred to our store, she was constantly on the phone with a manager from the store from which she transferred, sometimes ignoring incoming phone calls from customers and talking poorly of employees on phones by the front door where she could be heard. Her resistance to leaving her comfort zone made her seem withdrawn ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 16. The Greek Devil And The Greek God Pan In Christianity, the Devil is represented as the founder of an empire on fire , an empire that struggles against and counteracts the kingdom of God. The Devil is described as an entity who is filled with evil power, but not enough power to overcome Christ if they were to duel. Though the Devil is not as powerful as Christ, he s unfettered, given the designation of being the ultimate source of evil power. Since the inception of Christianity, portrayals of the Devil have been fundamental in instilling fear within the Christian population. The Devil s abilities and appearance has become feared by approximately 31.5% of the world s population. As historians have had access to the past that they haven t had before, it s been discovered that the iconography of the Devil isn t necessarily original, but rather, inspired from religions with an age older than Christianity. While there s an infinite amount of possible sources available to attribute the iconography of the Christian Devil to, the Greek god Pan provides source materials that show imagery and behavior similarities to the Christian Devil. By analyzing texts by ancient authors such as Hesiod and Ovid, as well as paintings and sculptures spanning multiple centuries, I will argue that the Greek god Pan s iconography and behavior was used as inspiration for the Christian Devil. • 20. Martyrs To X-Rays Martyrs To The X Rays The discovery of X rays was costly. Many lost their lives in the process and those who survived with severe physical deformities were considered fortunate. Their determination is inspiring and their work was a life changer. The Beginning Wilhelm Conrad Roentgen discovered X rays on November 8, 1895. About 14 days after Roentgen first noticed radiation activity, a man by the name of Friedrich Walkhoff performed the first dental X ray. He did the X ray on himself first for twenty five minutes and then on patients for thirty. Mr. Walkhoff only noticed hair loss on his patients around the exposed area, nothing he considered significant (Sansare, Khanna, Karjodkar, 2011, p. 1). Minor effects of radiation were first noticed in 1896 by Nikola Tesla ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It was not until 1904 when William Rollins leaded the tube housing, installed the collimator, and did many experiments on pregnant guinea pigs to conclude that X rays can kill fetus . Rollins was the first to give many contributions to radiation protection. In 1907 an X ray manufacturer by the name of Rome Wagner had the first idea of film badges. He would carry a photographic plate in his pocket to see if he was getting too much exposure and then develop it each night. Wagner was unable to perfect his idea because he died six months later from cancer (Kathern, Ziemer, 1980, p. 3). In the 1920 s other methods of protection were introduced. The film badge became a routine monitoring device. The unit to measure radiation was established and named the Roentgen, and the first tolerance dose was created (Kathern, Ziemer 1980, p. 4). One might classify radiation protection as quite the traveler since its journey transcended through both the Pioneer Era and the Era of Progress. The Dangers Of Heroism In Robinson Crusoe Robinson Crusoe is a novel about a traveler which places the main character as a hero, and when it comes to heroism, the reader wants to believe that what he reads is real. Everybody is willing to forget its own reality when it comes to dive into an art, no matter if we are talking about literary work, painting or cinematographic masterpieces. We are willing to accept what we read as the truth and to forget every illogical element that could disturb us from our escape from life. This is what these works are made of: to alter reality. We consider that we read a narrator and not an author. The author is always non existent when it comes to believe a book. So, when we read Robinson Crusoe, we read Robinson s words and not Defoe s words. But how do we feel about Defoe being a character in this rewriting? It is as painting him back in the picture and making him a character since the beginning. It feels as if we are watching a battle confronting Foe against Foe and making him the culprit of all the lying. And now that he is nothing but a character that ended up writing a book where he is his own narrator, who is the first narrator ever? We could actually thought about Suzan right away, since she is the main voice in Foe. But when we focus a little more, she is nothing more than a silenced woman, pushed outside by a canon of a male authorship . What could have been seen as a feminist book is taking a complete u turn: Suzan, who is first represented as a strong woman surviving on an island and who is ready for her story to be heard, ends up being manipulated by Foe who clearly makes her understand that he knows everything better than she ... • 22. What Is The Relative Sodium Concentration Of Osmosis I believe that an average potato has a relative sodium chloride concentration of .17 moles. I also believe that an average potato has a relative glucose concentration of .95 moles. I have drawn these conclusions based on the data my classmates and I have collected as well as my knowledge of osmosis. When placed in various levels of sodium chloride solutions, the mass of the potatoes increased less the higher the concentration of sodium was in a given solution. For example, when placed in a solution of pure tap water, the potato cubes exhibited an average mass change of +7.466%. Next, when placed in a solution with a molarity of .05, the potato cubes exhibited an average mass change of +3.442%. Finally, when placed in a solution with a molarity of .15, the potato cubes exhibited an average mass change of +1.2%. When the potato cubes exhibit an average mass change of 0, it will mean that the sodium chloride concentration is the same, both in the water and the potato. When the potato had a mass change, it meant that the sodium chloride concentration was hypotonic, or lower inside the potato cells than the water. However, as the mass change percentage grew lower and lower, the difference in sodium chloride concentration also grew smaller. When the potato and water have the same concentration, they will be isotonic, which means there is the same concentration both in the potato and in the water. This will not cause the potato to change mass because the potato cells do not ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Two of the most important items in our solar system are the planets and the moons. They differ in geologic activity, composition, interior structure, magnetic fields, and atmospheres. There are multiple probe missions, both past and present, that support these concepts. There are physical factors and characteristics that are important in determining the property of the items. In this paper, I will discuss all of these topics as well as what benefits I think there are so studying other worlds as well as the benefits I see to studying the solar system and why. The moon has no real atmosphere so there can be no weatherly erosion, which is an issue some planets have. The atmosphere is basically comprised of gases that surround the moon. The moon has an extremely low gravity and cools more rapidly than some planets. It does not have any plate tectonics. The surface of the moon has been created from years of impact by craters and volcanoes. The moon is often comprised of the crust, the mantle, and the core. The moon is best observed through telescope observations, however; the moon has always been subject to lunar landings, lunar samples, and orbiting space crafts. The moon has a very weak magnetic field in comparison to planets such as the Earth. The moon does not have a dipolar magnetic field. The crust is where most magnetization occurs. The first moon ... This is the point that Dickens is trying to make with the main character in his novel Great Expectations. Profit does not mean loss in the literal sense, but when you gain something materialistic at the loss of something sentimental, profit means loss. In the novel, Pip, the main character, leaves his home and moves to England and makes immense profit in money, only to lose it all. In Great Expectations, the giving of the soul at the gain of the world is explored through Pip and Miss Havisham. Pip moves to England and becomes wealthy; Pip now thinks that money is the best thing in the world. Pip then returns to his home and confesses his love to Estella, Estella doesn t love him back. Symptoms And Treatment Of Delirium Delirium is an acute change in brain function that can be accompanied by inattention and either a change in cognition or perceptual disturbances (Allen and Alexander, 2012). Delirium in critical care patients is very common, it actually occurs in 2 out of 3 intensive care patients who are on a ventilator, but often goes undetected because delirium monitoring is considered too time consuming or unreliable (Reade and Finfer, 2014). Intensive care unit (ICU) patients that have delirium spend more days on a ventilator, remain on sedation longer, have increased chance for infections, have longer hospital stays, and higher mortality rates during their hospital admission and in the 6 months after. According to Eastwood, Peck, Bellomo, Baldwin, and Reade (2012), most of these patients are also left with permanent cognitive problems that they struggle with for years. Not only does delirium cause more issues with the patients, it can cost the hospital more money due to increased length of stay, hospital acquired infections such as pneumonia, and re admissions. Studies have shown that using the confusion assessment method (CAM) every shift, and performing the assessment correctly, can help detect delirium in ICU patients earlier. Charley s son Bernard is such a character. Lacking dimension and depth of character, Bernard functions primarily as a foil to expose Willy s tragic and pathetic nature. The other characters have no real interaction with Willy that would allow for development. During Willy s first flashback, Bernard appears only to remind Biff of the Regents exam. Aware of the success that Bernard has obtained, Willy shows repect for him by calling him a brilliant man. He was willing to break the traditionally accepted artistic practice in order to better portray his artistic creativity. Cezanne was became part of the movement that followed the Impressionists called the Post Impressionism movement. The artists who were the driving forces behind this movement were Gauguin, Van Gogh, Seurat, and Cezanne. These artists were placed in this grouping because they were the avant garde artists of the time period, who wanted to be able to express their emotions rather than simply representing what they saw. Cezanne s Mont Sainte Victoire seen from The Bibemus Quarry was painted in 1985. Mont Sainte Victoire is a mountain that is in the South of France and overlooks the Aix en Provence, which happens to be the hometown of Paul Cezanne. This work exemplifies the Post Impressionistic techniques because Cezanne utilized the avant garde techniques, while at the same time demonstrating the relationship between the artist and the work. This work embodies the period style because it contains avant garde geometric shapes to define the forms, colors, and interpretations that were important to the Post Impressionists. First off, the harshness of the lines goes hand in hand with the shapes that exist in the work. The shapes tend to be simplified shapes, which demonstrates that Cezanne wanted things to appear as if they could be broken down. Cezanne utilizes an array of geometric ...
