Dna Database Ethics
How would you feel about a DNA database having record of every man, woman and child in the
United States? Many questions are raised on whether it is ethical to have, safe and beneficial. A
national DNA database could help solve crimes, but it also allows for thousands of innocent people to
be at risk. Many argue against having a DNA database and many are for a database. I am going to
argue against having a national DNA database because it has potential of being hacked, it is a violation
of individual rights and DNA is not 100% accurate. A national DNA database would be under control
by the government, but is the government able to create such a secure system to protect valuable
information? Government computers were hacked in 2015, exposing ... Show more content on

Though there are many arguments against having a DNA database there are also reasons to have a
DNA database. DNA is one of the leading factors in putting criminals behind bars. When DNA is
evident in a criminal case, it makes that case a lot stronger. With a database of all citizens DNA it can
help law enforcement catch criminals to make communities safer. DNA will not only be able to help
solve crimes ongoing now and for the future but to help solve past crimes. DNA also allows for
scientist to use the valuable information for research to get a better understanding of health and safety
for individuals and to help link people who have the same medical condition. With an entire database
of all people, it allows for the system to not be discriminatory. Minorities make up the vast majority of
the criminal justice system. With every race, gender and ethnicity in the system it opens up the ability
for all people to be at risk for being in the system with DNA placing them for a crime and making it
harder to get away with one. There is also a possibility that having a DNA database will lower crime
rates. People who feel they can get away with crimes now, will have a higher chance of getting caught.
Those who fear getting caught because the government and police agencies have their DNA will be
less likely to commit crimes. Mark Kleiman a professor who deals with criminal justice stated, DNA
databases reduce crime rates,

Analysis Of Pin Ups In Public Space
Dr. Lauren Rosewarne is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Social and Political Sciences at the
University of Melbourne. Her Article Pin ups in Public Space is an academic piece about the double
standard of the allowance of sexist advertisements but outlawing of pin ups in the workplace. In this
essay, I will explain how Rosewarne used rhetoric and evaluate whether she was successful in doing
so. She shows the clear similarities both visually of these images but also both of their effects on those
whom have them exist in their presence. Rosewarne successfully argues her point due to her excellent
use of Ethos and Logos in her argument.
Pin ups in Public Space is an article written not to change legislature but to change readers
perspectives. Rosewarne shows that pin ups and advertisements both share the same qualities but are
each treated differently causing an alarming double standard. They cause the same effect, a male
dominated space. Rosewarne cites numerous credible sources throughout her writing as well as uses
plain logic to prove her point. In doing so she utilizes rhetoric by using ethos and logos. Ethos is used
through her proving credibility and Logos through her using logic and proving connections.
Rosewarne does seem to lack Pathos in her writing, perhaps due to the setting her writing exists in.
Emotion is typically not needed in academic literature, and as she is writing in an academic setting, it
makes sense that her use of rhetoric avoids Pathos, or emotional appeal.
Rosewarne begins with the definition of sexual harassment according to the Human Rights and Equal
Opportunity Commission, uninvited touching; uninvited kisses or embraces; smutty jokes or
comments; making promises or threats in return for sexual favors; displays of sexually graphic
material including posters, pin ups, cartoons, graffiti or messages left on notice boards, desks or
common areas; repeated invitations to go out after prior refusal . Then after, in Rosewarne s
introduction we can immediately see her use of Ethos in her citing of Tom Reichert and quoting of
Bob Garfield, [t]here is scarcely a category in all of advertising...that hasn t invoked sexual imagery,
sexual situations, or just basic sex appeal . She speaks

Reflection About My Practicum Experience
This portfolio is reaching its end and it is now time for me to start reflecting about my practicum
period. Last year was a great year and a challenging one as well.
When the practicum period started I was lost, I did not know where to begin and what to do and it
took me time to adapt to the new challenges I faced. Once I sat down and considered my options I
began searching for schools to do the practicum. The city I live in has many disadvantages as far as
education; on the one hand, English is not taught in kindergarten so I ended up teaching in a Language
School during the kindergarten period; on the other, there are not many qualified English teachers and
this resulted on very scarce feedback from the teachers who observed my lessons.
As time went by, things did not get easier; it took me three months to be accepted in the primary
school because of some issues with the Ministerio de Educación . Luckily, I did not have such
problems in the secondary school.
This portfolio helped me realize my strengths and weaknesses as a teacher. As regards my teaching
skills is concerned, now that I re read all the lesson plans I made, I can say that I made some progress.
Firstly, I learn to create meaningful and effective contexts. As it can be seen in my firsts lesson plans
contexts always caused me problems. At first I considered that using a course book was more than
enough to create contexts, which is not the case. Course books are helpful inside the classroom but

Boston Tea Act Research Paper

Research Paper
The die is now cast. The colonies must either submit or triumph. ~King George III The Tea Act,
sometimes known as the Boston Tea Party, has a lot to say about tea. It is referred to by John Adams
as the Destruction of the Tea in Boston. The night, December thirteen seventeen seventy three.
Colonists disguised themselves as Mohawk Indians. Seventeen Million Pounds of unsold tea was
dumped mid day. With the colonists throwing over the tea off the ships, King George decided to
punish the Bostonians.
The Colonists were sick of the high prices of the tea coming from Britain. Before the Tea Act, the

The next day some of the participants returned to Griffin s Wharf and, seeing some of the tea still
floating on top of the water, they approached it in small boats and destroyed what remained by hitting
it with their oars (History). The ninety two thousand pounds of tea dumped into the harbor caused it to
smell. Because of the Boston Tea Party, the British shut down Boston Harbor until all of the three
hundred forty chests of British East India Company tea were paid for. This was implemented under the
seventeen seventy four, the Intolerable Acts and known as the Boston Port Act. The Boston Port Act,
the Intolerable Acts also implemented the Massachusetts Government Act, the Administration of
Justice Act, the Quartering Act, and the Quebec Act. Colonists responded with protests and
coordinated resistance by convening the First Continental Congress in September and October of 1774
to petition Britain to repeal the Intolerable Acts. The Boston Tea Party was the first significant act of
defiance by American colonists (After the Tea Act). The Boston Tea Party was enormous, ultimately
leading to the American Revolution which began in Massachusetts on April nineteenth, seventeen

The Effective Leadership Style of Martin Luther King Jr....
Our world is filled with many successful leaders. The gift of being a leader can be learned; however
some individuals have a natural born talent to be a leader. Each leader has his or her own unique
leadership style. The gift of being a leader can be learned. Certain individuals are born with a
charismatic style and can easily be a leader. A successful leader is one who can inspire and motivate
people towards a goal. Martin Luther King Jr. was an individual with a born gift to lead people. The
following paper will discuss how Martin Luther King Jr. was able to inspire and motivate people with
his effective leadership style.

their rights. MLK had a way with words. He spoke eloquently and would get people on board and able
to follow him to pursue a better outcome. MLK allows promoted nonviolence. His political
philosophy and strong beliefs helped lead our nation to the racial justice we have today. MLK is
described as a man who was generally quiet and listened attentively as others talked. Ling (2002)
states, King had a remarkable ability to get people who would otherwise be constantly feuding to work
together . The key to a successful leader is bringing people together. King was able to bring people
together and work together for an achievable goal. He could quiet crowds and calm them down to be
more peaceful. He spoke on nonviolence as the better resolution. According to Ling (2002), For King,
leadership meant standing up for what he believed in and being a drum major for justice . A leader is
also one who can relate to people. King was able to relate to the people who spoke to therefore
African Americans were more likely to listen and follow what King had to say. King was a leader
because he challenged the status quo. He had the courage to stand up for what he believed, the rights
of all people to fair and equal treatment.
Compare leadership styles Perhaps King s leadership style is a bit ambitious for one to achieve. The
next comparable person who ranks with King would be Barack Obama.

Ballistic Fingerprinting In The Criminal Justice System
We live in a society where large parts of crimes such as; rape, assault, and burglary involve gun
violence. One of the newest controversy surrounding the topic of gun control is the procedure known
as ballistic fingerprinting. The impact of ballistic advancement has played a critical role in unraveling
new levels of solving crimes in the criminal justice system. Ballistic fingerprinting specifies to a set
strategy that depends exclusively on the imprints that a firearm leaves on a bullet to match it to the
gun used to commit the crime. Ballistic fingerprinting requires gun manufacturers to test fire the
firearms they produce and store pictures of the ballistic markings left on the cartridge cases in a

Descriptive Writing About A Rose Garden
As the sun slowly peaked out of the horizon in Riverside, California, the scorching sun and unbearable
heat come along with it. Covering this dry city, Riverside fell into a moist, humid atmosphere. Besides
this, the day was bright and early for a hike up to the 40 acres University of California, Riverside
Botanical Gardens. As I hiked there, all I can think about is the sweat escaping my body, running
down my skin. However, luckily, a thick Oak bench with a shade roof sat directly above from me to I
can hide myself from the tortuous beaming sunlight. Even though sweat continued to drip down, I
wiped off most of it due to over heating of my body. Once I was comfortable on the bench, I looked
up and around, realizing I ended up in the Rose Garden of the Botanical gardens. The rose garden was
located on the top of a man made hill just right of the giant 18 footed trees. This hill had a warm,
humid breeze combined from the Pacific Ocean and hot Riverside hot weather. provided a hub of
different types of singing birds, graceful butterflies, buzzing beetles, tall trees, and a variety of flowers
from all over the world. As I walked into the garden, there were several rows of different species of
roses with different colors. Surrounding the rows of animated flowers, the flowers were sectioned off
in four with bright orange, mellow yellow, pure white, odd purple, fierce red, and light pink. As well,
three benches placed purposefully on the perimeter of the rectangular garden. I

Benefits Of Running Convection Allowing Models ( Cams )...
1. Introduction
The benefits of running convection allowing models (CAMs) for convective storm prediction have
been demonstrated in a variety of contexts over the past decade (e.g., Done et al. 2004; Kain et al.
2006; Lean et al. 2008; Kain et al. 2008; Clark et al. 2009; Coniglio et al. 2010; Schwartz et al. 2009;
Sobash et al. 2011; Clark et al. 2010, Clark et al. 2011; Weisman et al. 2013). As these studies show,
much of the value of running CAM forecasts comes from their ability to provide explicit information
about convective properties such as initiation, mode, motion, longevity, and intensity. To effectively
use CAM output in operational forecasting settings, novel forms of guidance are needed to summarize
these forecast attributes in ways that can be easily understood by forecasters and other end users.
Toward this end, Sobash et al. (2011), hereafter S11, documented a proof of concept for producing a
next day (12 UTC to 12 UTC) severe convective weather guidance product using output from
deterministic CAM forecasts initialized at 00 UTC. In S11, locations where intense simulated
convective storms occurred were identified using updraft helicity (UH; Kain et al. 2008), a diagnostic
designed to detect mid level mesocyclones in CAM output. A threshold was applied to the UH field to
identify severe simulated convection and produce a field of surrogate severe weather reports, which
were then spatially smoothed to create a surrogate severe probabilistic forecast

Police Operations Research Paper
The backbone of Police Operations In this country it is very well known that patrol officers are the
most valuable people in the organization. Police officers are the first responders, the first ones to
arrive to an area where there is crime. Police officers are always around when needed. Most people
will disagree, until they are in a situation where they need assistance, and need an officer to protect
them from any harm. Police officers go through a whole lot, each and every day. Their day begins
from the moment they walk out the door to the moment their shifts come to an end. A police officer is

Whether they are on foot patrolling, on motorcycles, bicycles, or even in their vehicles. An officer will
always be easy to locate. Especially because they are all over the city patrolling. Whether they are
patrolling the streets, schools, airports, etc. They make sure to always try and keep everyone safe and
feel protected from any harm.
Police officers are really the backbone of this nation. Without them there would be more violence all
around the world. Yes, there is violence that does occur every day, but with the help of officers I feel
like there is actually less violence. There are many times where things to get out of control, and
shootings do break out, but most the time it s the officers trying to stop those who are doing the
shootings. Whenever there is some type of outbreak violence, law enforcement is there to help stop if
not all but some of the violence. Over the centuries violence has increased rapidly. It will continue to
increase as the years go by. Drugs have been one of the main causes as to why violence will continue
to increase. As police try their hardest to try and get drugs off the street, they will not be able to
because drugs are starting to come in from everywhere. The only thing law enforcement can do is
capture the biggest drugs lords. Yet, if we think about it all these drug lords have other people working

O Pioneers By Willa Cather Analysis
O Pioneers!: The Land and the American Dream It seems that everything in Willa Cather s O
Pioneers!, aside from the land, starts out so full of life and ends so utterly devoid of it. It could even be
said that the characters in the novel become imprisoned by their own lives. Marie is barred by her
love, which, in the end, leaves her quite literally lifeless. Alexandra, who initially is so full of life,
begins to view her life as unimportant and as a prison house. Even the spirituality of the pioneers is
ever declining and dying away. Ultimately it is Frank who embodies the idea most obviously; in his
youth Frank lives the life of a happy, handsome man, yet his life ends in utter despondence and literal
imprisonment. How is it that all of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Alexandra puts her entire life into the land. In fact, Alexandra seems to exemplify the land itself. She
epitomizes the American Dream and everything it stands for. She takes a raw piece of Nebraskan soil
and works it until it becomes bountiful and she becomes wealthy and seemingly successful. In all of
her success in achieving the American Dream, very little is said about Alexandra s own hopes and
dreams. Though Alexandra is the only one to have achieved anything close to the American Dream,
she is the only character to become completely downhearted. In the novel it is written that she was
actually tired of life (112) and that what was left of life seemed so unimportant (113). She also relates
life to a poem she loved as a girl, and the poem reads as follows: Hence Forth the world will only be/A
wider prison house to me...(118). Regardless of the fact that Alexandra signifies everything that is the
American Dream, she is still unhappy with and imprisoned by life. It is not until she indulges in her
own dream, the companionship of Carl Linstrum that she begins to see life in an optimistic light.
Another element soiled by the standards of America is the spirituality of the pioneers. The best
example of this is illustrated in the novel s character Ivar. While the church itself rejects Ivar and most
of Hanover wants to send him to an asylum, he is probably one of the most spiritual people in the
entire prairie. Ivar has a personal relationship

Utilitarian ( Evans, Kubasek, Audi)
Utilitarian is the school of thought based several theorist based on the end justify the means. Meaning
the moral thought is not viewed based on making the decision for outcomes. Utilitarian s base its
ethics on measuring the greatest good of options and choices that create a net happiness for society.
Ethics was seen based on the history of choices ad rules established in a political or social arena that
produced good or alleviated social pain. Once such is example is our human thought of bribing. In
most cases this would be viewed as unethical. But utilitarian s believe that if the bride would produce

He believe that the two could be addressed in the act utilitarian and the rule utilitarian. The act
utilitarian believe that the ethics is based on adding up the costs and the benefits of a choice that leads
to the net happiness of large groups. On the other hand the Rule utilitarian s states that the rule or
decision of one should not change the outcomes of many due the general rule. The utilitarian resolve
that ethics is the outcome of the act and not on rather it is right or wrong. The school of thought is that
every person matters and groups or decisions makers should make decision based on increasing
happiness; reducing unhappiness and not just on what is defined on what is individually ethically
wrong. It should support the net benefit to the greatest number of people.
Duty and Right (Audi)
The Duty and Right school of thought is discussed thru E. Audi in Determining Ethical Obligation. He
concluded that people should act within in their rights and with accord with others. Meaning behavior
or actions should not impede on the rights of others as one acts out his/her ability to express his
personal rights. And when one acts contrary to this he/she is violating the rights of others. The
literature goes on to express the rights of individuals and companies as a right to perform certain
actions that are morale and expressed in actions that are duty related. It further breaks individual on

The film industry would have never taken the direction it did without the incorporation of certain
worker management techniques and capitalist vertical integration pioneered by the founders of
Hollywood. The methods of operation that Hollywood established in the realms of production,

The Trust attempted to control the industry by charging rental fees for cameras and projectors, and by
inflating the cost of film. These tactics proved to be unsuccessful with the swift and adverse

accustomed to presently. Adolph Zukor founded Paramount, William Fox founded 20th Century Fox,
Carl Laemmle founded Universal, and Marcus Loew founded what would eventually be known as
Metro Goldwyn Mayer. The warm temperature and year round sunlight of the west coast was very
beneficial for the new studios. This along with low land costs and no real established union allowed
producers to focus more on the content of their output. These studios along with others were quick to

Pros And Cons Of Heroes
The term hero is viewed differently by separate individuals at various levels. The meaning or who is
considered a hero depends on several factors such as the context, the culture, the virtues, and other
social factors existing in a community. An act can be heroic or offensive depending on where, when or
how a person conducts it. Therefore, a hero is a person who is believed by others to possess powers,
strengths, special achievements or personal qualities which the ordinary man does not have or
someone who is a role model. However, as much as heroes are people who others praise for certain
reasons, they equally possess evident setbacks depending on the different varied views of individuals.
It is, therefore, clear that heroes possess certain qualities which can be viewed positively or negatively
depending on the various individual differences.
One of the pros of heroes is the ability to serve as role models and mentors. The outstanding qualities
of heroes include selflessness, patience, bravery, humility, kindness, and perseverance. Heroes are
people who put others lives first before them. Also, heroes are individuals who sacrifice themselves to
support others to get out of stressful situations despite the hardships they may undergo. In some cases,
heroes sacrifice their lives at the expense of those whom they serve. For instance, soldiers risk their
lives to defend their country from terrorism. Equally, firefighters take courage to rescue lives from
massive fires. Heroes, therefore, are risk takers, brave and capable of leading others to resolve crises
globally or at the personal level. It does not mean that by doing such deeds heroes don t value their
lives, but they value humanity more.
Heroes save lives. They dedicate their careers to help the poor and the underprivileged. They labor to
end social injustice and toil to come up with new medical discoveries. Heroes spend a part of or most
of their time in doing charity work. For instance, providing food for the hungry, visiting the sick and
providing free medication is the work of heroes who serve without reward. Also, those who discover
certain medicines that heal diseases are heroes serving in that capacity. Researchers in the medical
field spend most

Analysis Of The Book By Helen Humphreys And Days Of...
Coventry by Helen Humphreys and Days of Significance by Roy Williams have a number of sexual
interactions. The only problem with all but one of these sexual interactions is that the importance of
sexual acts is missing. When the gravity of the war has sunk into Harriet in World War Two her sexual
interaction with Jeremy is not special. In Days of Significance the war in Iraq has many influences on
sexual interaction, non of which are positive. Also, Overlord and Execution display the lack of
importance and some aspects of objectifying woman. I argue using these sources that in times of war
sex loses its importance and turns into a casual interaction as well as being prevented all the while
objectifying females. To begin, one primary text that illustrates the effect war has on sex is Coventry
by Humphreys. To start off, in the beginning of the text Harriet has sex with her husband. The sexual
interaction between the married couple appeared to be so special the Harriet gave her husband a
memento of their time together, She had slipped a pair of her panties in this morning ... those panties
he had struggled so hard to take off her last night (Humphreys 13). When Harriet and Owen have sex
in the beginning of the text, the two still believed that the war would only last until Christmas. The
gravity of the war has not yet sunk into the newly weds. Without the full gravity of the war pressing
down on Harriet and Owen, the two were able to have a special sexual interaction.

The World And Battle Of Gods Essay
Each historian or story teller, like EnumaElish, Hesiod, and Confucius, has his own understanding of
history due to the subjects that they focus on, type of evidence, and reliability of their evidence. These
historians are from different civilizations, so each one of text might be based on dissimilar life style
that they lived. All of the historians have some specific topics to talk about, like culture and war. Also,
having strong evidence will make their text much reliable, and people can use their texts and telling
their children about the history of their region. As an example of this situation, because my father was
a Peshmarga at 1990s, he told us how much Kurdish people suffered from Saddam Husain s regime.
First, each historian has different topics of the history to write about. To give an example,EnumaElish
was a Mesopotamian myth, specifically from Babylon. EnumaElish was a very old myth that focused
on the creation of the world and battle of gods. The gods were Tiamat and Apsu. They were husband
and wife, so they gave birth to this generation which is us. According to the points of view of this
author, there had not been humans created yet. In other words, there were only gods which gave birth
to this generation. When they created humans, they made humans to serve them and obey their laws.In
a comparison, in the ancient Greek, we are used to hear how much their gods meant to the Greek
people. This rule does not apply to the text of Hesiod. Hesiod concentrated

Taking a Look at Conspiracy Theories
In today s modern world it seems as if all major events have an official story, and another often less
credible story pursued by doubters and sceptics of the government or the details in the story. These
sceptics are more often than not referred to as conspiracy theorists. The issue that arises with these
conspiracy theories is that while some sound over the top ridiculous, some have turned out to be all
but true. For this reason, conspiracies are often controversial, they make serious issues into a fairytale,
or a simple non serious event into a serious concerns. These theories are the result of paranoia
regardless of their truth, they are often formed on assumptions, absence of information, and fear. For
these reasons a conspiracy can be formed around nearly any situation, disaster or event. Conspiracy
theories are not just a modern phenomenon either, and they can be found throughout human history,
but with today s technology it has become easier than every to spread these ideas around. These ideas
propagate due to the culture surrounding the world, and the fear individuals have of the unknown.
Many people prefer elaborate stories over simple explanations, especially when they feel their
government is behind the event. Misunderstanding, disbelief, denial, fear and human abilities and
emotion play into why and how these conspiracy theories emerge. Theories based outside of definite
fact, or the accepted explanation has been occurring as far back as history goes. The

Kusmider V. State Case Study
On the eve of November 15, 1982, defendant Thomas Kusmider was informed by his girlfriend, that a
gentleman named Arthur Villella, had assaulted her sexually. Mr. Kusmider confronted Mr. Villella at
his home which led Kusmider to shoot Mr. Villella in the throat. Paramedics arrived on scene and
were able to intubate Mr. Villella. However, while en route to the hospital Mr. Villella pulled the tube

Several questions were raised by the defendant after his trial, which resulted in him filing an appeal of
his conviction. Although he admitted to shooting Mr. Villella, Kusmider alleged that there was
negligence upon the EMT s for failing to properly restrain Mr. Villella while being transported to the

Nonexistent Knight Essay
Italo Calvino who was born was born on October of 1923 and died September 19 of 1985 was an
Italian journalist, and writer of short story and novels. His books are a mix of low and high culture,
real science with fantasy, history and contemporary life. In the satirical novel The Nonexistent Knight
the story told is of a Knight named Agiluf, who does not possess a body but exists inside a suit of
armor through his will. As Agiluf goes on a quest to prove that the princess of the Scottish king s
virginity has not been taken to prove his knighthood. There is some silliness to it but there is meaning
to its characters as each one has its own use in its twists and turns In Calvino s novel he uses
conventions from medieval romantic literature postmodernism and modernism to make the product
what it was.

The use of medieval romantic literature gave him a backbone as to what he can set the story in and
give it its momentum. The immersive time of knights and chivalry gave it the characteristics it needed.
As he took his ideas he made them not subject or bound to the normality s that these characters should
have. It made them unique and dynamic in which how different they were made them special and
important to the story. The connect Calvino has to post modernism makes it crazy. Somethings are all
over the place and makes it enjoyable to be caught up in the foolishness that he brings to life.
Modernism gives the ability to raise questions and critically think of what is going on throughout the
novel and create connections with what Calvino was attempting to portray. All of the conventions used

Maglev Train Essay
Maglev train states the train is lifted above its tracts by electromagnetic force when operating.
According to the study of Liu, Long and Li(2015), the general advantages of this brand new
technology over the conventional one, namely, the wheeled train, can be concluded into the following
three items. First, due to the absence of the friction, it can run more smoothly and quietly. Secondly,
there are less wear and tear happening during the operation, hence less maintenance and on going cost
is needed. Lastly, it can attain a rather high speed. This essay will examine the key technologies of the
maglev train from both the dominanted systems and the main characteristics of high speed and low
speed maglev trains perspectives.

The findings of Lu et al (2013) study suggest that it consists of primary coils, secondary coils and
levitation magnet. As Lu et al (2013) state, the train is driven by the interaction between traveling
magnetic field and the eddy currents, as well as thrust force. This can be demonstrated by the
electricity magnetism. However, the limitations of this system can be apparently found. The intensity
of the magnetic field is uneven, which is shown by the weakened near the entry end sector and the
intensified near the exit end sector (Guo, Zhou and Lian, 2012). This is known as the end effect . Lee,
Kim and Lee (2006) points out that its efficiency is relatively low due to the end effect. This is further
demonstrated by Guo, Zhou and Lian (2012), who claim that end effect will produce a downwards
pressure on the thrust force, which decreases the power efficiency and affects the motor performance.
Additionally, it tends to be evident that normal force can exert a negative impact on the levitation
system due to end

Mongols Religious Ceremony
We hardly knew what to make of all this. Our Mongols explained that tomorrow night there will be a
religious ceremony of great importance which will be very worthwhile to see. In the mean time we
visited a small temple and made acquaintance of several Lamas. One of them was a great doctor Lama
who had a large number of sick people waiting to be cured. As we walked in the Lama was attending a
lady patient who had a large tubercular absess on her neck. With a few strokes of his hand the Lama
removed the absess from the woman s neck to her finger and cutting it opened with a huge knife he

The Appeal of Television Chat Shows Essay
The Appeal of Television Chat Shows
Chat shows are a very popular and successful modern day television program. Why? It is probably
because as humans we are naturally nosey and curious about the lifestyles of others, especially those
of the rich and famous. It is this common characteristic that makes the neighbors peep through the
curtains to see what the Jones are up to next, the reason that village gossip spreads so quickly and the
cause of the growing number of reality television programs. Whether we admit or not, many have a
fascination with those in the public eye. We want to know about their secret to success, the skeletons

Some are run in the more conventional way of just the basic interview for example Parkinson, but
others are shown in a more entertaining approach, for example The Kumars at No. 42 and this is due
to their target audience. The target audience is who the programme is aimed at and huge factor when
considering the target audience is a scheduling time. For example Graham Norton is on weekdays at
10 o clock and this is a great scheduling time for his audience. It is a good time after the 9 o clock
watershed as Graham Norton attracts a young adult audience due to his adult humour and the guests
he has on his show whereas Parkinson is on Saturday evening at around 10.30. This programme is
probably aimed more towards older adults, as his style of interviewing is very traditional. Older adults
are more likely to be in at this time and will want to watch something before they go to bed whereas a
younger audience will watch more television on weekdays, as they will have work the next day.
Parkinson is a very popular chat show and has been running for many years.

his fame through interviewing other famous people. We can tell this from the shows

knowledge of the dictators corruption just drove this even more so.
The youngest sister, Maria Teresa is often portrayed in a light of innocence and this enforced by her
quiet nature. Throughout her narration she refers to death a lot, discussing it as a fear and having
recurring dreams of a coffin. This was evident to the effect her fathers death had on her. Her marriage
to Leandro and birth of daughter Jacqueline brings her out of her shell and like her elder sisters, she
joins the fight with same tenacity.
The second sister, Dedè was the only sister not a confident member of the revolutionary movement,
and the only one who survived Trujillo s reign. Her husband Jaimito was the reason for her lack of
participation and the father to her three children, Enrique, Rafael and David. It was Dedè caution that
saved her life but led her too much regret when conflict began to tear Dedè and her husband apart.
Whilst her suspicions about her sisters being killed were always very real, she never thought that her
worst fear would come true.
The final revolt saw The Butterflies with six official standing members; the Mirabal sisters and their
husbands. Their children and various members of other revolutionary groups had also been identified.

The Quebec Separatist Movement Of Canada
At some point, countries will fight for freedom at their breaking point. For example, during the mid
1900s, Canada did their own movement called the Quebec Separatist Movement. The movement was
about Quebec s independence from government. The movement involved the citizens of Quebec and a
group called Front de Liberation du Quebec (FLQ). The Front de Liberation du Quebec had kidnapped
people in Canada. The Quebec Separatist Movement began due to Quebec s citizens ambition to
become independent and was finally resolved by making a new constitution.
The historical context of the Quebec Separatist movement included The Quiet Revolution. The Quiet
Revolution was when small groups try to make Quebec independent especially FLQ. The small groups
members were Francophones, French speaking citizens. Their ideals was to make Quebec independent
from Canadaś government. First, Canada made a bill stating that it will create a better future for
Canada. The Official Language Bill is a reflection of the nature of this country as a whole and of a
conscious choice we are making about our future. (World History: The Modern Era) Canada thought it
was necessary to have one language, and it will make them feel united. After this bill was established,
Canada s government regretted and believed that there should be two official language. Yet the
citizens of Canada were still deciding if they wanted that law to pass. We believe in two official

Significance Of The Second Nun Essay
Part one: The Pilgrim In order to understand the significance of the second nun we must first look at
the duties and life of a traditional medieval nun. Medieval nuns and priests were expected to live a
very devout and highly moral life. Medieval nuns and priests must be fully dedicated to god and
christian faith. The daily life of a medieval nun was formulated around three main vows established by
St Benedict in 480 550 AD, The vow of Poverty, The vow of Chastity and the Vow of obedience. As
dictated by these vows nuns and priests must live very modestly and renounce everything they own
for use of the common good, remain chaste for their entire lives and must be obedient to god as well
as their superiores. Medieval nun s and priests lived isolated from civilization in fully self sustained
compounds know as covenants. Inside the covenant nun s and priest were expected to perform daily
tasks such as: washing and cooking for the monastery, raising the necessary supplies of vegetables and
grain, producing wine, ale and honey, providing medical care for the community, providing education
for novices, spinning, weaving and embroidery, and Illuminating manuscripts. In addition to these
tasks nuns and priest followed a very strict and routine schedule of daily prayers known as the book of
hours. All nuns and priests were expected to attend the prayers and would immediately stop what they
are doing to inorder attend. Due to the lack of description in the general prologue and fact

Surprisingly the original Gothic style back in the day was actually developed to bring sunshine and

The Goths were known as a barbaric tribe who held power in various regions of Europe. Between the
collapse of the Roman Empire and the establishment of the Holy Roman Empire. They were not
renowned for great achievements in architecture. As with many art historical terms, Gothic came to be

Romanesque architectural style, when both prosperity and relative peace allowed for multiple
centuries of cultural development and great building schemes. From roughly 1000 to 1400, several

During medieval times, a knight was expected to be loyal to those above him, and come serve them
when it was time to fight, and The great peers of the kingdom could call upon minor lords in their
dominions to come fight on their side, under one banner, but they all rallied towards the King, and
disobeying him was extremely frowned upon (Jokinen). Near the end of the middle ages, this loyalty
became a system known as Livery and Maintenance, and contributed greatly to the military aspects of
the Wars of the Roses. Livery and Maintenance was the practice of keeping large numbers of knights
on reserve, essentially a lord s personal standing army. These knights would wear the Lord s badge
and livery, which, in addition to payment for their service, gave them a sort of prestige, as long as their
lord was powerful. Since Lords could raise their own private armies, they had the choice to refuse
support to the king if they did not like him. This was a massive change in the structure of feudalism,
as standing up against the King was generally impossible without an army. The houses of Lancaster

like Richard Neville, sometimes called The Kingmaker. Livery and Maintenance gave the Noble class

With injuries plaguing the NFL, team doctors are able to use drugs such as prescription painkillers to

Aaron Gordon states, SportPharm,...from at least June of 2009 to June of 2010, illegally provided

Horror Versus Terror
Before beginning my argument and analysis, it is first necessary to discuss some of the basic
contrasting features of the concepts of horror versus terror, beginning with the concept as outlined by
Paul Wells. On this distinction, and first referring to terror, he writes terror stimulates the desire to
actively come to terms with shock; to enjoy its provocation and understand its effect. [...] Horror,
however, has only a negative and paralysing effect; a wholly nihilistic and enduring condition of death
and oppression (Wells 11). Our class lecture from March 8th clarified, largely encompassing the
definition provided by Wells, that terror is a reactionary, automatic response to an external threat in

We also went over how horror involves the realization that evil exists in the world, but is largely not
something that can be seen in the world, only in one s own mind, and that while terror and horror
coexist, horror can never come before an interrelated experience of terror, but terror can inspire later
horror, though not simultaneously as there must be some separation in time (Wynter 8 March; Wells
11 13). We learned that horror requires thought, memory, and imagination and that it must be
separated by time from whatever experience or event inspired it, even if that event was terror, in our
lecture on March 8th, and in a lecture on April 5th we connected the immediate fear of terror and the
more prolonged and building experience of horror to common themes and tropes used in many, if not
almost all horror films today, which involves the overall change in, and usually tightening, of space in
order to elicit horror, and the growing distance in time that builds the experience of horror (Wynter 8

The Effect of Supernatural Aspects on the Victorian Society Bram Stoker s Dracula, presents an
interesting perspective on death and illness in the Victorian period. This can be viewed as a creativity
on Stoker s part, or as a form of religious or social commentary on his changing era. There are several
flaws presented throughout the novel as the plot unfolds, which are: characters in the novel dismiss the
old traditional belief of the supernatural, the constant power struggle between the sexes and the
Victorian views on sexuality. The supernatural or metaphysical aspects presented in Dracula reflect the

This was the era of the confronting New Woman , who strove to be emancipated both politically and
sexually, a concept which much of the society at the time found highly seditious and unsettling. Not
only is the idea of the New Woman despised by the society, but the concept of a patriarchal society
changing towards modernity poses as a threat to the Victorian men. For example, Lucy is the first
victim of Dracula in England who turns into a vampire and the men are shocked at the appearance of
what she has changed into: My own heart grew cold as ice, I could hear the gasp of Arthur as we

This posed a threat to the upper middle class heterosexual Protestant male in the society because the

An Age Of Reform Swept
An age of reform swept through our nation due to the unfairness that was happening in our country.
Many people fought for change for themselves and for others that involved problems like alcohol and
humane treatment for the insane. The radicals did their best for what they thought was right and
changed our country for the better. There were costs and benefits to many movements, groups, and
radical individuals who sought change between 1840 and 1877. They created conflict, chaos, and
changes that played a part in making many reforms for their era. One such group that created a change
was the American Temperance Society which was found in 1826. The American Temperance Society
directed its efforts to redeeming not only habitual drunkards but also the occasional drinker (Foner
440). By the 1830s they believed that they had changed the minds of hundreds of thousands of
Americans to give up on alcohol. By 1840, the consumption of alcohol per person had fallen to less
than half the level of a decade earlier (Foner 440). The benefit of this change came with a cost, the
temperance crusade and other reform movements aroused considerable hostility (Foner 441). Horace

hoped that universal public education could restore equality to a fractured society by bringing the

The Association Between Worker Prosperity And...
Introduction In today s developing world, a great association between the representative and the
association is essential. For the association s profitability in each field, representatives ought to be
prosperity. The associations opposition for giving best in business is high. Thus, to pick up the upper
hand viability of the firm is imperative. This can just be achieved when there is a decent connection
between the workers and association. In this exposition, I will depict about the association between
worker prosperity and authoritative viability. The five components which are affecting on worker
prosperity and giving illustration for every element. Likewise disclose how to execute those variables
on representatives to take compelling work from them. Worker prosperity is characterized as that bit
of a representative s general wellbeing that they see to be determined basically by work and can be
influenced by workplace intercessions in the organisation. (John P. Meyer, 2010)The employee
satisfactions depends upon the happiness and working environment of an employee. The fundamental
point is that the representative prosperity absolutely relates with emotions, perspectives and
impression of the worker about their work and their firm. On the off chance that the worker is content
with their occupation and their executive means they get the correct admiration about their position
than just the representative can give their best to the organisation (Allisey, 2011). This

Social Darwinism And The Progressive Era
2. Already in the late 19th century, the American Federation of Labor had begun to represent a
growing segment of the American population discontented with the status quo of corporate
exploitation. At the onset of the 20th century however this message began to take particular weight, as
evidenced by the tripling of the AFL s membership and the rise of the Industrial Workers of the World.
Labor unions, the Socialist Party and progressives as a whole took issue with the doctrine of Social
Darwinism and moved forward as a somewhat united front with the goal of bringing meaningful
change to American society. As America made the transition into an industrial power in the latter half
of the 19th century, Social Darwinism became a prevalent method of rationalizing massive inequality
and widespread poverty. This doctrine of leaving the poorest in the nation to uplift themselves from
abject hardship without being provided any means to do so was exemplified as the American
population became increasingly concentrated in cities. Poor families would often go without
electricity or indoor toilets. Staggering inequality continued into the Progressive era. It was estimated
that J.P. Morgan s financial firm controlled 40 percent of all financial and industrial capital in the
nation. The largest conclaves of organized labor, the Industrial Workers of the World and the American
Federation of Labor, sought to tackle the stifling economic and political climate through sharply

One powerful example of King s pull on the reader s consciousness in his letter is on page three when
he refutes the argument of the Clergymen saying that Colored people should just wait . While many
words truly stand out, King s true effect was mastered by the appeal to the parents in the group, When
you have to concoct an answer for a five year old son who is asking: Daddy, why white people treat
colored people so mean ( Letter from Birmingham Jail 3)Then again, humiliation day in and day out

degenerating sense of nobodiness ( Letter from Birmingham Jail 3). Another element that helps
support King s point in his letter is the fervent repetition of his blatant disappointment in more than
simply the clergymen, but their Christian faith and the churches in service within Alabama during this
time. King repeats how disappointed he was in the common whites also and their bystander reactions
to racial issues. The fact that this man, a minister, beneath the said extremist white clergymen, and

Environmental conditions are sometimes appropriate for the evolution of numerous species from a
common ancestor. Evolutionary, or adaptive, radiations happen when a large number of species
descend from one lineage. This phenomenon usually occurs when a population of one species
colonizes an area with many available ecological niches and when the rate of speciation is greater than
the rate of extinction in a given area. Adaptive radiations have historically taken place after mass
extinctions and on newly formed island archipelagos, because these incidences create conditions
where new species can fill open ecological niches. Unlike the mainland, ecological niches are
available on new island systems. These island species adapt to new environments ... Show more

For example, the silverswords are a diverse group of plants that occur in Hawaii. They occur in many
forms, such as herbs, vines and trees, and in many habitats, such as at sea level to mountainous.
However, their closest mainland relative is a small herb that occurs in the Pacific Northwest. It lacks
the diversity that the Hawaiian silverswords have. Hawaiian drosophilid flies also provide an excellent
example of adaptive radiation. There are around 800 species of drosophilid flies in Hawaii, and it is
thought that they descended from one species of fly that colonized a Hawaiian island. In fact, it is
possible that they speciated from a single fertilized female who was transported to Hawaii millions of
years ago. Subsequently, subsets of the original drosophilid fly population were transported to other
islands and speciated there as well. Scientists believe that the Hawaiian drosophilid speciation is still
occurring. For instance, different populations of one species of fly that occur in forest habitat patches
have different numbers of hairs on their forelegs, and these hairs are used in mating rituals. If these
differences cause the fly populations to not interbreed they may lead to further

Globe Theater History
The famous Globe Theater had history behind being built, an amazing structure, and tons of expenses.
The Globe Theater s history behind being built was based off the period of life that it was built in.
After the plague ended in the 1800s, there was a company of actors known as the Lord Chamberlain s
Men who needed a theatre to perform in. This group is where Shakespeare was first known to be part
of. Many theatres were unable to reopen in England after the plague ended. The group performed in
the Cross Keys Inn for a little while while looking for a theatre but there were restrictions for
performing inside of the city s limits. Shakespeare was the lead playwright for the group by the time
the plans for the Globe came about. This group of actors were not the only actors that were struggling
at the time because the Theatre, which was a main place for plays to be performed was closed after the
lease for the land had expired and the owner refused to renew the lease. This sent Cuthbert and
Richard Burbage, the sons of the original owner of the Theater who had died, into an outrage. They
decided to build a new playhouse located in Bankside of London (Wright 71 76). The theater became
famous for being the place where Shakespeare did ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Reusing the wood saved money for the Burbages but there was still the cost of renting or owning the
land that the theatre was on. The solution to this problem was having multiple shares of the land.
These shares were bought by Lord Chamberlain s Men like Shakespeare s father and the Burbage
brothers, who now owned the theatre. Actors owning the theatre that they acted in was something that
had never happened before this time. This gave the theatre an advantage since they could save money
by not having to pay rent. They also did not have to worry about being kicked off the land because this
was the permanent home (Morley

SNAP Policy Analysis
For each of these three recommended actions to be implemented into policy, several things need to
occur. For the SNAP policy update and increase in funding recommendation, a general consensus
among the United States Department of Agriculture needs to be on board that this is a necessary
action. The USDA regulates the SNAP program, so they are the primary agency that would update the
policies to further enhance eligible food items and restrict purchasing of unhealthy food. They have
the resources of dieticians and medical doctors that understand nutrition, and can differentiate between
what healthy and unhealthy food products are. They already have restrictions based on eligible food
items, but they do not have any restrictions based on the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Congress as well. The Federal Trade Commission is the primary agency that enforces and regulations
advertisements. However, Congress grants the authority to the FTC, and therefore, can update the laws
and regulations regarding advertising. In 1990, Congress enacted the Children s Television Act, and
this authorized the FTC to limit the amount of advertising that children are exposed to. This law
limited the advertising to 10.5 minutes per hour on weekends and 12 minutes per hour on weekdays
(CDC, 2016). The FTC also prohibits the use of unfair methods of completion in advertising practices.
However, three elements need to occur for action. The first is, there must be a representation,
omission, or practice that is likely to mislead the consumer. Second, The FTC examines the
reasonableness of the practice from the perspective of the intended audience. Lastly, the
representation, omission, or practice must be likely to affect the consumer s conduct or decision with
regard to the product or service (CDC, 2016). This seems like it would be an effective process;
however, the process used to create prohibitions can require up to 10 years to complete the entire
process (CDC, 2016). Therefore, this process is not done very often, and as mentioned, childhood
obesity is at an alarming rate. Congress needs to enhance the power of the FTC to act in order to
protect children from marketing strategies used by the food and beverage industry. The current process
used by the FTC is extremely long and completely ineffective. Congress needs to make an ethical
decision if they want to effectively reduce childhood obesity. The research is very clear that
advertising leads to overconsumption and this leads to obesity. The recommendation action would hurt
corporate profits, but if corporate profits are more important than vulnerable children, then there are
major issues with the Congress

  • 2. Dna Database Ethics How would you feel about a DNA database having record of every man, woman and child in the United States? Many questions are raised on whether it is ethical to have, safe and beneficial. A national DNA database could help solve crimes, but it also allows for thousands of innocent people to be at risk. Many argue against having a DNA database and many are for a database. I am going to argue against having a national DNA database because it has potential of being hacked, it is a violation of individual rights and DNA is not 100% accurate. A national DNA database would be under control by the government, but is the government able to create such a secure system to protect valuable information? Government computers were hacked in 2015, exposing ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Though there are many arguments against having a DNA database there are also reasons to have a DNA database. DNA is one of the leading factors in putting criminals behind bars. When DNA is evident in a criminal case, it makes that case a lot stronger. With a database of all citizens DNA it can help law enforcement catch criminals to make communities safer. DNA will not only be able to help solve crimes ongoing now and for the future but to help solve past crimes. DNA also allows for scientist to use the valuable information for research to get a better understanding of health and safety for individuals and to help link people who have the same medical condition. With an entire database of all people, it allows for the system to not be discriminatory. Minorities make up the vast majority of the criminal justice system. With every race, gender and ethnicity in the system it opens up the ability for all people to be at risk for being in the system with DNA placing them for a crime and making it harder to get away with one. There is also a possibility that having a DNA database will lower crime rates. People who feel they can get away with crimes now, will have a higher chance of getting caught. Those who fear getting caught because the government and police agencies have their DNA will be less likely to commit crimes. • 3. Analysis Of Pin Ups In Public Space Dr. Lauren Rosewarne is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Social and Political Sciences at the University of Melbourne. Her Article Pin ups in Public Space is an academic piece about the double standard of the allowance of sexist advertisements but outlawing of pin ups in the workplace. In this essay, I will explain how Rosewarne used rhetoric and evaluate whether she was successful in doing so. She shows the clear similarities both visually of these images but also both of their effects on those whom have them exist in their presence. Rosewarne successfully argues her point due to her excellent use of Ethos and Logos in her argument. Pin ups in Public Space is an article written not to change legislature but to change readers perspectives. Rosewarne shows that pin ups and advertisements both share the same qualities but are each treated differently causing an alarming double standard. They cause the same effect, a male dominated space. Rosewarne cites numerous credible sources throughout her writing as well as uses plain logic to prove her point. In doing so she utilizes rhetoric by using ethos and logos. Ethos is used through her proving credibility and Logos through her using logic and proving connections. Rosewarne does seem to lack Pathos in her writing, perhaps due to the setting her writing exists in. Emotion is typically not needed in academic literature, and as she is writing in an academic setting, it makes sense that her use of rhetoric avoids Pathos, or emotional appeal. Rosewarne begins with the definition of sexual harassment according to the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission, uninvited touching; uninvited kisses or embraces; smutty jokes or comments; making promises or threats in return for sexual favors; displays of sexually graphic material including posters, pin ups, cartoons, graffiti or messages left on notice boards, desks or common areas; repeated invitations to go out after prior refusal . Then after, in Rosewarne s introduction we can immediately see her use of Ethos in her citing of Tom Reichert and quoting of Bob Garfield, [t]here is scarcely a category in all of advertising...that hasn t invoked sexual imagery, sexual situations, or just basic sex appeal . She speaks ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Reflection About My Practicum Experience This portfolio is reaching its end and it is now time for me to start reflecting about my practicum period. Last year was a great year and a challenging one as well. When the practicum period started I was lost, I did not know where to begin and what to do and it took me time to adapt to the new challenges I faced. Once I sat down and considered my options I began searching for schools to do the practicum. The city I live in has many disadvantages as far as education; on the one hand, English is not taught in kindergarten so I ended up teaching in a Language School during the kindergarten period; on the other, there are not many qualified English teachers and this resulted on very scarce feedback from the teachers who observed my lessons. As time went by, things did not get easier; it took me three months to be accepted in the primary school because of some issues with the Ministerio de Educación . Luckily, I did not have such problems in the secondary school. This portfolio helped me realize my strengths and weaknesses as a teacher. As regards my teaching skills is concerned, now that I re read all the lesson plans I made, I can say that I made some progress. Firstly, I learn to create meaningful and effective contexts. As it can be seen in my firsts lesson plans contexts always caused me problems. At first I considered that using a course book was more than enough to create contexts, which is not the case. Because of the Boston Tea Party, the British shut down Boston Harbor until all of the three hundred forty chests of British East India Company tea were paid for. One of the newest controversy surrounding the topic of gun control is the procedure known as ballistic fingerprinting. Covering this dry city, Riverside fell into a moist, humid atmosphere. Besides this, the day was bright and early for a hike up to the 40 acres University of California, Riverside Botanical Gardens. As I hiked there, all I can think about is the sweat escaping my body, running down my skin. However, luckily, a thick Oak bench with a shade roof sat directly above from me to I can hide myself from the tortuous beaming sunlight. Even though sweat continued to drip down, I wiped off most of it due to over heating of my body. This hill had a warm, humid breeze combined from the Pacific Ocean and hot Riverside hot weather. provided a hub of different types of singing birds, graceful butterflies, buzzing beetles, tall trees, and a variety of flowers from all over the world. • 9. Benefits Of Running Convection Allowing Models ( Cams )... 1. Introduction The benefits of running convection allowing models (CAMs) for convective storm prediction have been demonstrated in a variety of contexts over the past decade (e.g., Done et al. 2004; Kain et al. 2006; Lean et al. 2008; Kain et al. 2008; Clark et al. 2009; Coniglio et al. 2010; Schwartz et al. 2009; Sobash et al. 2011; Clark et al. 2010, Clark et al. 2011; Weisman et al. 2013). As these studies show, much of the value of running CAM forecasts comes from their ability to provide explicit information about convective properties such as initiation, mode, motion, longevity, and intensity. To effectively use CAM output in operational forecasting settings, novel forms of guidance are needed to summarize these forecast attributes in ways that can be easily understood by forecasters and other end users. Toward this end, Sobash et al. (2011), hereafter S11, documented a proof of concept for producing a next day (12 UTC to 12 UTC) severe convective weather guidance product using output from deterministic CAM forecasts initialized at 00 UTC. In S11, locations where intense simulated convective storms occurred were identified using updraft helicity (UH; Kain et al. 2008), a diagnostic designed to detect mid level mesocyclones in CAM output. A threshold was applied to the UH field to identify severe simulated convection and produce a field of surrogate severe weather reports, which were then spatially smoothed to create a surrogate severe probabilistic forecast ... O Pioneers By Willa Cather Analysis O Pioneers!: The Land and the American Dream It seems that everything in Willa Cather s O Pioneers!, aside from the land, starts out so full of life and ends so utterly devoid of it. It could even be said that the characters in the novel become imprisoned by their own lives. Marie is barred by her love, which, in the end, leaves her quite literally lifeless. Alexandra, who initially is so full of life, begins to view her life as unimportant and as a prison house. Even the spirituality of the pioneers is ever declining and dying away. She epitomizes the American Dream and everything it stands for. She takes a raw piece of Nebraskan soil and works it until it becomes bountiful and she becomes wealthy and seemingly successful. In all of her success in achieving the American Dream, very little is said about Alexandra s own hopes and dreams. Though Alexandra is the only one to have achieved anything close to the American Dream, she is the only character to become completely downhearted. In the novel it is written that she was actually tired of life (112) and that what was left of life seemed so unimportant (113). She also relates life to a poem she loved as a girl, and the poem reads as follows: Hence Forth the world will only be/A wider prison house to me...(118). Regardless of the fact that Alexandra signifies everything that is the American Dream, she is still unhappy with and imprisoned by life. It is not until she indulges in her own dream, the companionship of Carl Linstrum that she begins to see life in an optimistic light. Another element soiled by the standards of America is the spirituality of the pioneers. The best example of this is illustrated in the novel s character Ivar. • 15. Pros And Cons Of Heroes The term hero is viewed differently by separate individuals at various levels. The meaning or who is considered a hero depends on several factors such as the context, the culture, the virtues, and other social factors existing in a community. An act can be heroic or offensive depending on where, when or how a person conducts it. Therefore, a hero is a person who is believed by others to possess powers, strengths, special achievements or personal qualities which the ordinary man does not have or someone who is a role model. However, as much as heroes are people who others praise for certain reasons, they equally possess evident setbacks depending on the different varied views of individuals. It is, therefore, clear that heroes possess certain qualities which can be viewed positively or negatively depending on the various individual differences. One of the pros of heroes is the ability to serve as role models and mentors. The outstanding qualities of heroes include selflessness, patience, bravery, humility, kindness, and perseverance. Heroes are people who put others lives first before them. Also, heroes are individuals who sacrifice themselves to support others to get out of stressful situations despite the hardships they may undergo. In some cases, heroes sacrifice their lives at the expense of those whom they serve. For instance, soldiers risk their lives to defend their country from terrorism. Equally, firefighters take courage to rescue lives from massive fires. Heroes, therefore, are risk takers, brave and capable of leading others to resolve crises globally or at the personal level. It does not mean that by doing such deeds heroes don t value their lives, but they value humanity more. Heroes save lives. They dedicate their careers to help the poor and the underprivileged. They labor to end social injustice and toil to come up with new medical discoveries. Heroes spend a part of or most of their time in doing charity work. For instance, providing food for the hungry, visiting the sick and providing free medication is the work of heroes who serve without reward. Also, those who discover certain medicines that heal diseases are heroes serving in that capacity. Researchers in the medical field spend most ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 16. Analysis Of The Book By Helen Humphreys And Days Of... Coventry by Helen Humphreys and Days of Significance by Roy Williams have a number of sexual interactions. The only problem with all but one of these sexual interactions is that the importance of sexual acts is missing. When the gravity of the war has sunk into Harriet in World War Two her sexual interaction with Jeremy is not special. In Days of Significance the war in Iraq has many influences on sexual interaction, non of which are positive. Also, Overlord and Execution display the lack of importance and some aspects of objectifying woman. I argue using these sources that in times of war sex loses its importance and turns into a casual interaction as well as being prevented all the while objectifying females. To begin, one primary text that illustrates the effect war has on sex is Coventry by Humphreys. To start off, in the beginning of the text Harriet has sex with her husband. The sexual interaction between the married couple appeared to be so special the Harriet gave her husband a memento of their time together, She had slipped a pair of her panties in this morning ... those panties he had struggled so hard to take off her last night (Humphreys 13). When Harriet and Owen have sex in the beginning of the text, the two still believed that the war would only last until Christmas. The gravity of the war has not yet sunk into the newly weds. The World And Battle Of Gods Essay Each historian or story teller, like EnumaElish, Hesiod, and Confucius, has his own understanding of history due to the subjects that they focus on, type of evidence, and reliability of their evidence. • 18. Taking a Look at Conspiracy Theories In today s modern world it seems as if all major events have an official story, and another often less credible story pursued by doubters and sceptics of the government or the details in the story. These sceptics are more often than not referred to as conspiracy theorists. The issue that arises with these conspiracy theories is that while some sound over the top ridiculous, some have turned out to be all but true. For this reason, conspiracies are often controversial, they make serious issues into a fairytale, or a simple non serious event into a serious concerns. These theories are the result of paranoia regardless of their truth, they are often formed on assumptions, absence of information, and fear. For these reasons a conspiracy can be formed around nearly any situation, disaster or event. Conspiracy theories are not just a modern phenomenon either, and they can be found throughout human history, but with today s technology it has become easier than every to spread these ideas around. These ideas propagate due to the culture surrounding the world, and the fear individuals have of the unknown. Many people prefer elaborate stories over simple explanations, especially when they feel their government is behind the event. Misunderstanding, disbelief, denial, fear and human abilities and emotion play into why and how these conspiracy theories emerge. • 19. Kusmider V. State Case Study On the eve of November 15, 1982, defendant Thomas Kusmider was informed by his girlfriend, that a gentleman named Arthur Villella, had assaulted her sexually. Mr. Kusmider confronted Mr. Villella at his home which led Kusmider to shoot Mr. Villella in the throat. Paramedics arrived on scene and were able to intubate Mr. Villella. However, while en route to the hospital Mr. Villella pulled the tube out of his throat. The victim later died at the hospital. Several questions were raised by the defendant after his trial, which resulted in him filing an appeal of his conviction. Although he admitted to shooting Mr. Villella, Kusmider alleged that there was negligence upon the EMT s for failing to properly restrain Mr. Villella while being transported to the hospital. During the trial, a pathologist testified that Mr. Villella s death was caused by the gunshot wound to his throat, however, the wound could have been survivable (Brody Acker, 2010, p.116). The issue of proximate causation came about during Kusmider v. State (1984). Judge Johnstone precluded Kusmider from pursuing the issue of proximate cause before the jury as he ruled that negligent failure to provide approximate medical assistance could not interrupt the proximate causation (Kusmider v. State, 1984). According to Carpenter (1932), in order to be guilty of a crime, a person s conduct must cause harm as prescribed by law. As Agiluf goes on a quest to prove that the princess of the Scottish king s virginity has not been taken to prove his knighthood. There is some silliness to it but there is meaning to its characters as each one has its own use in its twists and turns In Calvino s novel he uses conventions from medieval romantic literature postmodernism and modernism to make the product what it was. According to the study of Liu, Long and Li(2015), the general advantages of this brand new technology over the conventional one, namely, the wheeled train, can be concluded into the following three items. First, due to the absence of the friction, it can run more smoothly and quietly. This can be demonstrated by the electricity magnetism. However, the limitations of this system can be apparently found. The intensity of the magnetic field is uneven, which is shown by the weakened near the entry end sector and the intensified near the exit end sector (Guo, Zhou and Lian, 2012). This is known as the end effect . Lee, Kim and Lee (2006) points out that its efficiency is relatively low due to the end effect. This is further demonstrated by Guo, Zhou and Lian (2012), who claim that end effect will produce a downwards pressure on the thrust force, which decreases the power efficiency and affects the motor performance. Medieval nuns and priests were expected to live a very devout and highly moral life. Medieval nuns and priests must be fully dedicated to god and christian faith. The daily life of a medieval nun was formulated around three main vows established by St Benedict in 480 550 AD, The vow of Poverty, The vow of Chastity and the Vow of obedience. As dictated by these vows nuns and priests must live very modestly and renounce everything they own for use of the common good, remain chaste for their entire lives and must be obedient to god as well as their superiores. Medieval nun s and priests lived isolated from civilization in fully self sustained compounds know as covenants. Near the end of the middle ages, this loyalty became a system known as Livery and Maintenance, and contributed greatly to the military aspects of the Wars of the Roses. Livery and Maintenance was the practice of keeping large numbers of knights on reserve, essentially a lord s personal standing army. These knights would wear the Lord s badge and livery, which, in addition to payment for their service, gave them a sort of prestige, as long as their lord was powerful. Since Lords could raise their own private armies, they had the choice to refuse support to the king if they did not like him. Already in the late 19th century, the American Federation of Labor had begun to represent a growing segment of the American population discontented with the status quo of corporate exploitation. At the onset of the 20th century however this message began to take particular weight, as evidenced by the tripling of the AFL s membership and the rise of the Industrial Workers of the World. Labor unions, the Socialist Party and progressives as a whole took issue with the doctrine of Social Darwinism and moved forward as a somewhat united front with the goal of bringing meaningful change to American society. As America made the transition into an industrial power in the latter half of the 19th century, Social Darwinism became a prevalent method of rationalizing massive inequality and widespread poverty. This doctrine of leaving the poorest in the nation to uplift themselves from abject hardship without being provided any means to do so was exemplified as the American population became increasingly concentrated in cities. • 39. Drosophilid Flies Research Paper Environmental conditions are sometimes appropriate for the evolution of numerous species from a common ancestor. Evolutionary, or adaptive, radiations happen when a large number of species descend from one lineage. This phenomenon usually occurs when a population of one species colonizes an area with many available ecological niches and when the rate of speciation is greater than the rate of extinction in a given area. Adaptive radiations have historically taken place after mass extinctions and on newly formed island archipelagos, because these incidences create conditions where new species can fill open ecological niches. Unlike the mainland, ecological niches are available on new island systems. These island species adapt to new environments ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For example, the silverswords are a diverse group of plants that occur in Hawaii. They occur in many forms, such as herbs, vines and trees, and in many habitats, such as at sea level to mountainous. However, their closest mainland relative is a small herb that occurs in the Pacific Northwest. It lacks the diversity that the Hawaiian silverswords have. Hawaiian drosophilid flies also provide an excellent example of adaptive radiation. There are around 800 species of drosophilid flies in Hawaii, and it is thought that they descended from one species of fly that colonized a Hawaiian island. In fact, it is possible that they speciated from a single fertilized female who was transported to Hawaii millions of years ago. Subsequently, subsets of the original drosophilid fly population were transported to other islands and speciated there as well. Scientists believe that the Hawaiian drosophilid speciation is still occurring. For instance, different populations of one species of fly that occur in forest habitat patches have different numbers of hairs on their forelegs, and these hairs are used in mating rituals. If these differences cause the fly populations to not interbreed they may lead to further ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 40. Globe Theater History The famous Globe Theater had history behind being built, an amazing structure, and tons of expenses. The Globe Theater s history behind being built was based off the period of life that it was built in. After the plague ended in the 1800s, there was a company of actors known as the Lord Chamberlain s Men who needed a theatre to perform in. This group is where Shakespeare was first known to be part of. Many theatres were unable to reopen in England after the plague ended. The group performed in the Cross Keys Inn for a little while while looking for a theatre but there were restrictions for performing inside of the city s limits. Shakespeare was the lead playwright for the group by the time the plans for the Globe came about. This group of actors were not the only actors that were struggling at the time because the Theatre, which was a main place for plays to be performed was closed after the lease for the land had expired and the owner refused to renew the lease. This sent Cuthbert and Richard Burbage, the sons of the original owner of the Theater who had died, into an outrage. They decided to build a new playhouse located in Bankside of London (Wright 71 76). The theater became famous for being the place where Shakespeare did ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Reusing the wood saved money for the Burbages but there was still the cost of renting or owning the land that the theatre was on. The solution to this problem was having multiple shares of the land. These shares were bought by Lord Chamberlain s Men like Shakespeare s father and the Burbage brothers, who now owned the theatre. Actors owning the theatre that they acted in was something that had never happened before this time. This gave the theatre an advantage since they could save money by not having to pay rent. They also did not have to worry about being kicked off the land because this was the permanent home (Morley ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

For the SNAP policy update and increase in funding recommendation, a general consensus among the United States Department of Agriculture needs to be on board that this is a necessary action. The USDA regulates the SNAP program, so they are the primary agency that would update the policies to further enhance eligible food items and restrict purchasing of unhealthy food. The Federal Trade Commission is the primary agency that enforces and regulations advertisements. However, Congress grants the authority to the FTC, and therefore, can update the laws and regulations regarding advertising. In 1990, Congress enacted the Children s Television Act, and this authorized the FTC to limit the amount of advertising that children are exposed to. This law limited the advertising to 10.5 minutes per hour on weekends and 12 minutes per hour on weekdays (CDC, 2016). The FTC also prohibits the use of unfair methods of completion in advertising practices. However, three elements need to occur for action. The first is, there must be a representation, omission, or practice that is likely to mislead the consumer. Second, The FTC examines the reasonableness of the practice from the perspective of the intended audience. Lastly, the representation, omission, or practice must be likely to affect the consumer s conduct or decision with regard to the product or service (CDC, 2016). This seems like it would be an effective process; however, the process used to create prohibitions can require up to 10 years to complete the entire process (CDC, 2016). Therefore, this process is not done very often, and as mentioned, childhood obesity is at an alarming rate. Congress needs to enhance the power of the FTC to act in order to protect children from marketing strategies used by the food and beverage industry. The current process used by the FTC is extremely long and completely ineffective. Congress needs to make an ethical decision if they want to effectively reduce childhood obesity. The research is very clear that advertising leads to overconsumption and this leads to obesity. The recommendation action would hurt corporate profits, but if corporate profits are more important than vulnerable children, then there are major issues with the Congress ...
