retelling of Alison Bechdel s life through the lens of her relationship with her father. However,
because of what she considers to have been his suicide, Alison is left with an incomplete picture of
who he was in life. By calling Fun Home an autobiography, Bechdel enters an autobiographical pact
with the reader that ensures that what Bechdel is telling us is the truth. However, elements out of her
control leave Bechdel unable to provide certain objective facts necessary to her narrative. As an
attempt to remedy these absences and in turn maintain the validity of her story, Bechdel uses
intertextuality to fill in the gaps of in her retelling. By overlaying masterplots of fictional narratives
over her own, the reader is able to get at an understanding of the kind of person Alison s father was. In

It is unnecessary for many of these criminals to be held in prison since there isn t any room for them in
the first place. One way that the federal prison system can ease the overcrowding problem would be to
simply release the non violent criminals back into society with a fine or on probation. The
overcrowding that is contained within many prisons causes the facilities to become more and more
inhumane with the number of prisoners added each year. Many prisons suffer from lack of resources
for their inmates such as proper medical facilities, extra prison cells, and resources to reduce idleness,
which causes the conditions of the prisons and the treatment of the prisoners to worsen. With
overcrowding, prisoners become victims of unconstitutional treatment, and many will suffer and die if
this chronic overcrowding continues (Mayeux 9). Though many people would argue that prisoners

the eighth amendment which declares no cruel or unusual punishment (Brown v. Plata 1). The

As of 2015, more people in the United States were scared of public speaking than zombies or
volcanoes or even death. The fear of public speaking also known as glossophobia is a type of
performance anxiety, which is a subgroup of anxieties that include test anxiety, stage fright, etc. The
sensations felt by an individual could have been as minuscule as slight tremors, or as overwhelming as
gargantuan panic coupled with paralyzing fear. To have stated that glossophobia was a difficult fear to

R.W. Connell s (1995) concept of hegemonic masculinity is the most significant theoretical device for
understanding the masculinity hierarchy. Demetriou (2001) states how hegemonic masculinity
expresses two different social practices, from a social constructivist view. The first is that men benefit
from the patriarchal system of society. The second process is that there is an intramasculine hierarchy
by which the social order of men is created and maintained. Connell (1995) argues that this is the
reason for the societal gender order where not only do men uphold power over women, but also
certain men are dominant over other men. Demetriou (2001) criticises Connell s term of hegemonic
masculinity for being too broad, as the main focus is usually placed on the intramasculine process. He

death and disease. Outside of the books from that era, we can see where in American society this fear
came from, how it weaved around what was alien and strangled it. We can retrospectively watch as it
manifests itself in the roots of the AIDS epidemic, an outbreak of disease that took tens of thousands

This passage near the ending of the book is very important for Charlie. Sam tells Charlie that if he
likes her, he should be open to her, and if he wants to date her, he should ask her. Also, this reveals a
change in Charlie after Sam tells him this; if he is uncomfortable with something, he will tell them that
instead of being shy about it. For example, when Patrick kisses Charlie, he is uncomfortable with it,
but because Patrick is his friend, he lets him do it. After what Sam tells Charlie, next time he will most
likely be more open to Patrick and tell him he is uncomfortable with what he is doing to him. All in
all, this passage is important, because it expresses that Charlie is changing from a once awkward and
shy person to a more open and direct person.

Stoneman Douglas High School shooting
The shooting incident in Florida was a shooting and mass murder incident on Wednesday 14 February
2018 At 2:20 PM, at the Marjorie Stoneman Douglas School in Parkland, 17 students and school staff
were killed in the attack and 14 were taken to hospitals, 3 of them critically. 12 of the killers were
killed inside the school campus, 2 were killed in front of the school, 1 was on the street and 2 were
hospitalized.
The shooting named Nikolas Cruz was born in September 1998 (19 years old). A former school
student who was dismissed for disciplinary reasons. Several reports said Nikolas Cruz was a member
of the right wing organization of the Republic of Florida, but the organization s leader said his group
had nothing to do with the incident.
The US newspaper The Washington Post reported that Cruz was receiving treatment at a mental health
center but stopped receiving treatment and cut off much of his knowledge of his relationship in part
because he shared photos and reports of his love for killing animals through his account in Instagram,
