Examples Of Post Colonialism In Things Fall Apart
The novel Things Fall apart is a post colonial novel written by Nigerian novelist Chinua Achebe in
1958, before Nigerian sovereignty. The novel portrays the life of Okonkwo, an Ibo head and local
wrestle champion in Nigerian village of Umuofia. The novel is divided into three parts, the first parts
talks about his family and personal history, the customs and society of the Ibo, and the second and
third sections introduce the influence of British colonialism and Christian missionaries on the Ibo
community during the late 1800s. Achebe provides the examples of post colonialism through the
symbolic representations of the colonizers, the introduction of their new religion, the creation of their
own government, and explains how the colonizers have caused them to diverge from their original
traditions and cultures.

Stereotypes Of The Older Generation
I think that sometimes the older generation will stereotypically think that the younger generation is
lazy, irresponsible, ungrateful and that they have no respect for others. The older generation may feel
that the younger generation has no moral values, that they are spoiled, and that they think they know it
all. The younger generation may feel that the older generation is inflexible, that they are set in their
ways, and that they are technologically unskilled. I think that these commonly formed opinions about
different generations can create views that divide us. I feel that each generation could learn from the
other if they are open and willing to do so. The only time I can remember where I had a personal
experience with a bias against me was many years ago after I had moved to southern Louisiana when I

I feel that this is unfortunate because the differences that we have can be truly beneficial in
strengthening a company where different perspectives can help in being able to work more creatively
and productively together. We should try to stop ourselves when we first meet or see someone from
passing any judgment on them based on a stereotype that we may have because in actuality we don t
know who they are or what their strengths, thoughts, abilities, and ethics are. I think that we need to
try to recognize any stereotypes that we may personally each have and then make a conscious decision
to try to stop ourselves from thinking of others in that way. I don t feel that we must agree with
everyone else s beliefs or choices, but I think if we can put aside our biases and acknowledge and
appreciate all of the differences that are found within our ages, skin colorings, genders, amounts of
money that we have, where we are from, etc., I think that it will help us to find a common ground and
then, we can learn and benefit from one

Child Development Theories Within The Field Of Psychology...
As we know, there was a prominent debate on Nurture versus Nature in the field of psychology.
Psychologists fought against each other to assert their own theories and statements. Nowadays, people
have reached a consensus on this topic that the environment and the genes actually interact with each
other and eventually lead to the typical features of individuals. Evidently, parent is one key topic in
various child development theories since parents generally provide the whole living environment for
children. For example, it is one dominant component of the microsystem in Bronfenbrenner s
ecological approach.Parenting styles are referred as the general traits and characteristics of the
strategies that parents used to deal with their children. There are 4 types of parenting styles which
were divided by responsiveness and demandingness: authoritarian, authoritative, uninvolved and
permissive. And it is not surprising that different parenting styles would likely generate divergent
youth outcomes. Authoritarian parenting is known as high demandingness yet low responsiveness.
Authoritarian parents are associated with the use of both psychological control and behavioral control.
Parents will set harsh rules for their kids without any explanation or discussion. The relationship
between parents and adolescents is tense. And conflicts will burst out during adolescence in both high
intensity and high frequency. Therefore, these kinds of parenting generally have negative

Analysis Of Alice ; S Change In Attitude In Alice Walker s...
However, Alice begins to realize the dynamics as the story progresses and new experiences emerge. I
feel that Alice s change in attitude is Carroll s way of insinuating the ridiculousness or hypocrisy in
the adult s and society s standard way of thinking. The first scene where the reader sees Alice take
hold of her authority is when she becomes incredibly big at the White Rabbit s House. I feel that this
scene is very significant because it shows how the shift in Alice s character is set up. In order for Alice
to stand up against the Rabbit, she had to become bigger in size. I believe that this scene is a metaphor
to how Carroll viewed the ridiculousness of how most adults viewed children, and was a way to show
children reading the novel that one day they too will grow bigger in size and have the upper hand on
the older adults. This scene also shows the fragility of the power dynamics. Carroll is insinuating that
this idea that adults are more knowledgeable or superior because they are bigger than a child is
nonsenses and can easily be altered. Once Alice realized she has the authority in herself, the entire
dynamics of the story changes. Ren even states, in spite of the awkward inconvenience, (Alice) enjoys
her large body size, for it gives her power to fight back (Ren 4). I believe that Alice begins to realize
her own power and voice and in turn she discovers strength within herself. It s through this new found
power that Alice threatens them by saying, you better not

conceived by answering some of these questions: Where does this organisation want to be in 5 years?
How does this work with our vision and values? Does our product/service need changing? Do we

we finance this objective? Do we need staff to achieve the objective? Do we need to outsource some

Power Poses And Their Effect On Cognition
Power Poses and their Effect on Embodied Cognition
Brandon Farley

Abstract
The current study was conducted to delve deeper into the relationship between muscular changes and
subjects reported embodied cognitions. Thus was expected that power poses would have a significant
increase on subject s academic related self esteem. Subjects were 33 undergraduate students in an
undergraduate psychology research methods course (males=9, females=24). Participants were split
into 2 randomized groups, no pose control group vs. power pose group. The control group was asked
to relax as they wished, whereas the power pose group viewed images of different poses of which to
imitate from. Experimental subjects copied 2 different power poses while holding the pose for 1
minute each. All participants rated questions regarding feeling frustrated about performance, how
likely they are to feel self conscious. Opposite to the current hypothesis, results showed that power
pose condition showed similar amounts of self esteem as the no pose condition group did. Results
indicate more investigation into power poses and their effects.
Keywords: self esteem, power pose, embodied cognitions

Child Labor Laws In The 1920 s
The decade of the 1910 s was one of many changes. Many changes that were decades in the making
were finally fulfilled. These changes came from new governmental policies, increases in industry, and
the rising incomes of Americans. Many new rights were given to Americans in the 10s, in particular,
child labor laws were changed, and women were given more freedom. In 1910, children under 15
made up 18% of the nation s employment. Many of these jobs were very dangerous, had long shifts,
and very low pay. Congress passed child labor laws in 1916 and 1918 as part of the progressive
agenda. However, the Supreme Court declared these laws unconstitutional.Women could be

The Effects Of Climate Change On Canada s Agriculture
Climate Change will positively impact Canada s Agriculture Thesis: Climate change will negatively
impact Canada s Agriculture due to heavy rainfall, droughts, irrigation problems, pesticide issues and
not enough nutrients available? Intro
Agriculture is highly dependent upon weather and climate in order to produce the food necessary to
sustain human life. North America is the world s largest and most productive supplier of food and
fiber (3). Canada is the second largest country in the world however it only contains five percent of
land that is suitable for farming (7). This small farming area is divided in two different zones. The first
zone is the great Prairies located in Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba and the mixed Wood Plains
of the St. Lawrence River and the second zone is the Great Lakes regions (7). Approximately 80% of
Canada s major farming is done the Prairies (7). There have been several recent studies that indicate
most regions of Canada to warm up during the next 60 years (3). The Intergovernmental Panel on
Climate Change (IPCC) in 2007 projected that global average temperature to increase by 1.5 to 4.5
degrees Celsius (3). Ironically, this would be the largest increase in global mean temperature in the last
10, 000 years (3). According to the comprehensive Canada Country Study (CCS) all the Global
Climate Model (GCM) indicates Canada will be impacted with the most warming (7). The impacts of
this climate change will be greatly reflected on the

The Island And The Road Comparison
The two dystopian texts, The Road is written by Cormac McCarthy and The Island directed by
Michael Bay are great examples of a dystopian world. The Road is a post apocalyptic novel where a
father and son have nothing but the dirty clothes on their backs, a pistol and a cart filled with
scavenged items. Their destination, the coast, although they don t know if anything awaits them there.
The Island is an advanced world where clones of real people are made in order to help their clients
live longer. These two mediums are fairly similar once you go in depth. The two works, The Road and
The Island have common dystopian characteristics which are the use of brute force, alienation and
dehumanization of individuals which is reflected in terms ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The man fell back instantly and lay with blood bubbling from the hole in his forehead. The boy was
lying in his lap with no expression on his face at all (McCarthy, pg. 66). In other words, the boy was
so shocked by the situation he was in; this caused him to change his attitude towards strangers. In the
same manner The Island has important character development that causes the protagonists to change
their behaviours. For instance, when Jordan Two Delta and Lincoln Six Echo escaped and went to
Tom Lincoln s house. In this scene there was an altercation that resulted in the client Tom Lincoln
dying, which was a great example of how the characters developed. After this scene the protagonist
realized how careless and willing they were to hurt others in order to get the clones back to the
facility. The scene allowed the protagonist Lincoln Six Echo to develop and take extra precautions to
maintain safety. Six Echo would always be on his toes; look back every so often, and though through
his plans. This leads into the theme that is related to brute force which is that people will do anything
to survive.
The theme that is comparable to this dystopian characteristic is that individuals will do whatever they
can to survive. In the movie the actor Steve Buscemi who is Lincoln s friend says this to

When I Have Fears, by John Keats and Holy Sonnet 1, by...
Mortality is a moving and compelling subject. This end is a confirmation of one s humanity and the
end of one s substance. Perhaps that is why so many writers and poets muse about their own death in
their writings. Keats and John Donne are two such examples of musing poets who share the human
condition experience in When I Have Fears and Holy Sonnet 1.
Keats begins each quatrain of the Shakespearean sonnet with a modifier, and each modifier indexes
the subject of that quatrain. The modifier therefore gives his sonnet a three part structure. The first
quatrain is what he fears; the second quatrain is what he beholds; the third quatrain is what he feels;
and the ending couplet sums up all of the quatrains. However, the structure could ... Show more

He also calls the addressed fair creature of the hour, and recognizes the constraint of time on love, for
an hour is fleeting. He also recognizes the fickleness of it who is to say someone else will be his
addressed the next hour? He continues to suggest that the addressed has some sort of deceptive and
illusory faery power that creates an unreflecting love. Deception and illusion typically are detrimental
for those who experience it. Keats does not reflect on losing the chance for love as something terribly
unhappy, for he has a pre existing negative perception of love. Love is also unreflecting, so love won t
be reciprocated. Keats then ends the segment about love half a line earlier in this quatrain than all
other quatrains.
Keats introduces the summation of the poem early, in the second part of the last line in quatrain four.
This choice reflects how great his impending death weighs on his mind. In the final couplet, Keats s
dark views of love leave him to stand alone and not experience the love mentioned in the previous
quatrain. Of course, alone might not necessarily mean devoid of love; he could mean that he s alone
because of his hopeless thoughts on the subject. Or he could mean he is alone because he does not
have the emblems Love and Fame. Wide world dwarfs him, making it even sadder that in spite of all
the vast opportunities he has had with different cultures,

How might the role of the police officer in these situations be made easier? 99 101 205i In the class
text book police field operation, it clarifies that domestic violence is a pattern of abused behavior in
any relationship that is used by one partner to gain or maintain power and control over another inmate
partner (Birzr 99). More often in cases of domestic violence women are the victims of men. This
situation can occur to anyone at any age and anywhere. When officers of the peace answer a call they

police response for dealing with domestic violence was to talk to one of the parties into leaving for the

although DPN was a movement for equality and many other issues, it was a milestone in the Deaf

Unit 207 Understand Person Centred Approaches Essays
Unit 207 Understand person centred approaches in adult social care settings.
Outcome 1 Understand person centred approaches for care and support.
1.1 Define Person centred values.
Person centred values means the people whom we support are treated as equals and are involved in all
aspects and areas of their care and that they are respected and valued as individuals. This means being
involved in their assessments, care delivery and support planning, basically person centred values is
making sure all approaches, policies and procedures and care practices put the residents at the centre
of the day to day activities. It should also include the residents and their families in the planning and
maintaining of this.

The development of a support plan is the perfect example of how person centred working operates.
Instead offering people a choice of what is currently available and finding what best fits their needs,
person centred working looks at someone s needs and built the support package around them. One of
the important aspects of person centred planning is to look at what people are able to do for
themselves and to ensure that services are not taking over aspects of a person s life that they could
perfectly well manage without support.
Outcome 3 Understand the importance of establishing consent when providing care or support.
3.1 Define the word consent
Consent is the informed agreement to an action and/or decision. Permission for something to happen
or agreement to do something.
3.2 Explain the importance of gaining consent when providing care or support.
When working with an individual it is important to uphold their rights to be fully involved in their
own care, whilst adhering to legal requirements. It is also the individuals right to refuse any care,
support or treatment they do not want. It is also essential that people not only give you their consent
but also that they understand what they are consenting to and the implications of this. Gaining consent
protects not just the career but the individual receiving the care and support as well. If no consent is
given then you cannot proceed with the care. It is illegal to pressure anyone into

Their place as the most popular monster is secured.
Though zombies are the monster of the moment, vampires have plenty of things they don t, like
versatility; recognizable zombies are mindless rotting re animated corpses hungering for human flesh,
taking one of those things away doesn t mean it s not a good story but it does go against the strong
zombie image and stumble into vampire story territory. Vampires on the other hand, are often sentient
and so can be very varied in terms of character, you can have a story of a good vampire or a villain, a
new vampire or one who has lived through ages. Though, just because they can be varied doesn t

America Needs More Government Programs to Pull Children...
The face of poverty is changing in the United States. When someone mentions that a person is living
in poverty, we are inclined to think of a bum living on the street, eating at shelters, and using whatever
money they have for alcohol, drugs and tobacco. Usually we visualize this person as being a middle
aged male with drab clothing and a long beard. This description may have fit the average person living
in poverty or on the street a few years ago, but it is no longer a correct generalization. Children are the
face of poverty in 2015. These children have little chance to rise up out of the lifestyle they are born

Some people are born into stable families, so they have m ore opportunities than those that are born
into poverty. No matter how people feel toward the choices that the parents made, we can t hold this
against the child.
One other thing society canít do is simply hand out money or food stamps to the families of these
children. Who knows where this money is going or what it is being used for? The food stamps could
be intended to feed a baby, but instead they could be used to buy food or items that a child will never
see. It is also all to common for parents living in poverty or on the streets to use what money they get
for alcohol or cigarettes. Instead of handing out money to these people, they should be put i n
treatment programs that could help them fight their addictions. This would be of great benefit to their
children now and in the future. Not all mothers and fathers in need of assistance are going to be
irresponsible with what they are given, but we ca n not take the chance of having the money wasted
and the children neglected. Who wants the money that they worked for going to someone else, so that
person does not have to work, yet still gets paid regularly just because they had a baby when they
were n ot ready? As I stated before, not all parents living in poverty are irresponsible and many have
legitimate reasons for being where they are. But because there are people who will take advantage of
the system, we need to watch out for the children of tho se

This is an era of competition. Customers are available with wide variety of options and choices. Just
one time dissatisfaction with one customer may cost the organization losing its group of customers
because of faster communication and social media. Knowledge is wide spread, more transparent than

horizon and angles to be defined with. With all of these easily available information and facilities,
customer becomes a key element to retain, satisfy, develop and pay attention to, for the smooth and
successful running of business. Besides other factors like efficient supply chain, sound financial
structure, good marketing team and progressive human resource there are other factors too, which may
bring organization out of the ordinaries. These factors may be the niches of the core operations like

Tiananmen Square 1989 Analysis
Tiananmen Square, 1989 The 20th century was marked by many wars and rebellious events with the
millions of human victims among solders and civilians; nevertheless, political leaders do not change
their tactics. The issue of the armaments race is on the agenda in the 21st century, and there are still
wars for the territory, strategic natural resources, power, leadership, and domination on the world map
with a complete absence of the respect to cultural and territorial borders among neighboring countries,
anarchy, and violence inside a country when people want to assert their rights or express the protest to

Outsourcing And Re Shoring Production
A globalizing economy along with cheap telecommunications technology is making it effortless for
countless occupations that were formerly invulnerable to offshoring to be sent overseas. As
globalization advances, the off shoring movement is likely to escalate as well. Nonetheless, numerous
manufacturing companies such as Caterpillar, Bosh, and Phillips have disclosed that they will return
part of their off shored production to their home countries.(When Manufacturing moves back 1)
Throughout this paper I will discuss the politics of offshoring and re shoring production as well as
reflect on globalized production and how these concepts will play out politically. The impact of
offshoring is not a new topic in the global business world. Offshoring has matured into a high profile
argument over the last few decades. As a result of offshoring, countries like the United States have
exported countless jobs to foreign countries. As technology improves as well as the modernization of
countries such as China and India higher numbers of service jobs will be moved offshore (The Next
Industrial Revolution.) Although offshoring has delivered enormous economic benefits, it also has
created a heavy political toll. Offshoring has led to increased amount of jobs and rising standards of
living in for laborers in low cost countries, rich world workers have been able to leave the grunt work
to someone else, and companies with lower labor cost have brought higher profits. Western consumers

Achilles As A Hero
In the book The Iliad, by Homer, the main character, Achilles, is a Greek warrior who is part divine
and part human. During the story, Achilles undergoes the steps in becoming a hero. Each of these steps
prepares him for the final moment, when he becomes a hero. Achilles is a hero because he goes
through many of the steps necessary in the path to becoming a hero. The first set of major steps that
Achilles undergoes is the call to adventure, the refusal to the call to action, and the meeting with the
mentor. In Book 1 of the Iliad, Achilles is called to fight against the Trojan s to reclaim Helen,
Menelaus wife. Later in the war, Chryseis and Briseis are taken as prizes from a battle. They are the
daughters of a priest of Apollo named Chryses. After Chryses begs for his daughters back, the Greeks
decide to give Briseis to him and have Chryseis stay. Chryseis belonged to Achilles as his prize from
the battle and Briseis belonged to Agamemnon, a political leader of the Greeks. Agamemnon then
humiliate Achilles by taking Chryseis Achilles s prize, for himself. This angered Achilles greatly and
caused him to leave the Greek army, albeit temporary. This serves as Achilles refusal to the call of
battle. Achilles s anger is shown in Book 1 lines 188 to 192, these lines show how much Achilles s
pride affects his actions and how he responds to conflict. In this situation, his pride is hurt greatly, to
the point where he almost kill Agamemnon, however Athena stops him. Achilles says

Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (Ppaca)
I. Overview
The purpose of this paper is to present a brief overview and timeline of the Patient Protection and
Affordable Care Act (PPACA) that was signed into law by President Barack Obama on March 23,
2010 and to discuss its potential impact on healthcare access, costs and quality, and insurance
companies. .
II. Healthcare Reform Timeline
The PPACA includes comprehensive reforms that will take place over the next four years. It is
intended to hold insurance companies more accountable, protect consumers, lower health care costs,
increase the quality of care and provide more health care choices and improved access for all
Americans. Some of the major provisions and their effective dates are outlined in the following
sections.
A. 2010 ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
B. Improving Quality and Lowering Costs
The payment incentives provided to healthcare providers under the PPACA will most likely lead to
improved healthcare quality. In addition, reimbursement will shift from being based on quantity to
being value based which will in turn incentivize providers to provide higher quality care.
Although the Congressional Budget Office reported that the PPACA will reduce the U.S. budget
deficit, it is doubtful and remains to be seen what will actually happen. Also, it is anticipated that
businesses will pay the fines imposed by the PPACA because it will be cheaper than obtaining
insurance coverage for the employees.
C. Holding Insurance Companies Accountable
A major pro of the PPACA is that it establishes several new rules and controls for insurance
companies including requiring that they cannot deny coverage for pre existing conditions, must spend
a certain percentage of premiums collected on actual patient care costs. These new rules provide
protection for consumers and ensure insurance companies are held accountable for the care and
services provided to patients that are enrolled in their plans.
Another major issue that has raised considerable debate and even led to law suits being filed is the
constitutionality of the PPACA. Those who oppose healthcare reform argue that it is unconstitutional
for Congress to require that every person purchase health insurance. However, the PPACA improves
access to healthcare which

most people say diamonds are. But, diamonds are usually given. Shoes, on the other hand, you can

shoes are a must have accessory for me. Here s a couple more. Shoes can make or break an outfit. I
firmly believe this. For instance, today I wore a pair of plaid pants and a black shirt. But my shoes
were 3 inch black heels with a ruffle. And I m pretty sure that s all anyone noticed about my outfit.
Now I debated between those and a pair of bright yellow sandals. I chose the heel because they were
more dramatic, which makes an outfit. If I had worn something else, it would have been a completely
boring outfit, but the shoes made it an interesting one. Shoes can express who you are. I work in an

bit. But, in an office full of business casual people, you don t want to show up and be completely

Increase in the Legal Drinking Age
Another reason why the legal drinking age was changed is because of the fact that the adolescent brain
is not fully developed; it is supposed that excessive alcohol intake causes brain damage in teens.
However, in order for damage to occur, the drinking has to be extremely excessive. If there are only a
few of these extreme bingeing episodes, they do no harm to the adolescent brain (Minimum Drinking
Age). David J. Hanson, a professor at the University of New York at Potsdam, states, There s no
evidence that drinking in moderation damages developing brains. If it did, most Italians, Jews, French,
Greeks, Spaniards, Portuguese and many others would be suffering mental defects (ProQuest Staff).
The argument that occasional binge drinking causes brain damage in teens is not supported by the
facts. The methods being used to inform early twenty first century youth about alcohol misuse are
ineffective and impractical. Alcohol educations programs are mainly about scaring teens out of any
type of alcohol consumption (McCardell), which in reality makes drinking attractive to them because
of the mystery involved (Minimum Drinking Age). As a result, the programs intended to prevent
underage drinking actually have the opposite effect (Ogilvie); instead, alcohol education should be
based on the reality of the bingeing environments teens and young adults are dealing with
(McCardell). Because of the higher drinking age, high school and collegiate educators are not able to

Clemente was a wonderful man. In these next five pages I will be talking about his life and how he
was a good samaritan throughout his life.
Roberto Clemente was born in the summer in August 18, 1934. He was born in a house of concrete
and wood on an old country road in Barrio San Anton, Carolina, Puerto Rico. He was the youngest of
seven children. His father was a foreman overseeing sugar cane cutters and helped deliver sand and
gravel for a construction company. His mother did laundry, ran a grocery store and did other jobs on
the sugar cane plantation. Roberto did odd jobs so he could help the family and buy himself a bicycle.
Growing up, Roberto played baseball and participated in track and field. He won medals for the
javelin throw and short distance races. Throwing the javelin strengthened his arm for throwing a
baseball. Roberto was a very athletic boy.
Roberto Clemente had four brothers and two sisters. He did have to work with his father loading and
unloading trucks because his family was poor. He was very interested in baseball ever since he was
young and played against teams in his neighborhood. He went to Vizcarrondo High School in

Stand Your Ground Law
Stand your ground law is beneficial to the state of Florida. Stand Your Ground is a form of self
defense law that allows individuals to meet force with deadly force without an affirmative duty to

additionally, twenty two other states adopted this law, which is used in different situations in each
state, but are very similar. The law was adopted from a 17th century English common law called

This law has allowed drug dealer and gang members walk free from murder chargers. Furthermore,
the number of cases that claim the defense of stand your ground law are continuing to increase. Why,
because defense attorney s are using the law in a way to state legislators never imagined. This defense
has played a major role in a number of cases with minor or no injuries (Tampabay.com). For instance,
in the case of Jordan Davis, the stand your ground defense was abused by Dunn. Why, because he shot
in the car of a young teen because he thought he saw a gun, even though no harm caused. Dunn in this
case could have avoided the altercation by ignoring the young teen music in staying in his car. Since
Dunn knew the stand your ground law, he knew that he could get away with the crime. In nearly a
third of the cases the Times analyzed, defendants initiated the fight, shot an unarmed person or
pursued their victim and still went free (Tampabay.com). In fact, about two third of defendants that
used this claim used a shovel, gun, and other weapons like an ice pick, and a chair leg. Even though,
there are many factors that play a role when a decision is being made in a defense claim, like the
location of evidence, witnesses, and the size of the party and age involved in the case, facts do not
matter long as the person has a reasonable excuse. Reasonable excuses are causing people to abuse the

March 12, 2009, Madoff pled guilty to an 11 count criminal complaint admitting to running an
international Ponzi scheme and defrauding thousands of investors. The SEC defines a Ponzi scheme as
an investment fund that involves the payment of purported returns to existing investors from funds
contributed by new investors (SEC). In the 1920s, the originator of the Ponzi scheme, Charles Ponzi,

Peter was hired as the head of compliance and de facto COO for the legitimate trading business. He
was Madoff s right hand man and most valued business asset. Andy possessed a holistic view of
complex technological issues, but was viewed by his employees as someone who was unapproachable
and haughty. Mark ran the main trading business and was thought to have been the heir to the Madoff
throne (Fortune). Bernard L. Madoff Investment Securities occupied 2.5 floors in the Lipstick building
located in New York City. The main trading floor was on 19; the software programmers were stationed
on 18 and the lucrative hedge fund operations was stationed on the 17th floor. To the traders, the 17th
floor was off limits and was kept a secret. One trader recalls, We knew it was statistically impossible

hell does he do it?, You d say, There couldn t be anything bad. The Madoffs had such a name and such
an aura (Fortune). At first, he handled the money of a small circle of friends and family offering them
high returns with little risk. Over time, he delivered on his promises and the inner circle of investors

Leadership Skills And Practices Of Leadership Essay
1. Leadership is defined by several principles of knowledge, applied knowledge and results. Oxford
Dictionary defined leadership simply as, the action of leading a group of people or an organization .
The Coast Guard sets a great store on the concept and application of leadership skills and practices.
The service begins training the enlisted workforce leadership skills at the most basic level in boot
camp, with primary focus on followership, team building and effective communications; all of which
are elements for leadership. We place such a store on leadership the Coast Guard created the
Leadership Development Center (LDC) with a primary focus on training leadership to the enlisted and
officer workforce. The LDC created the enlisted leadership continuum which brings us the Apprentice
Leadership Program, Leadership and Management School, Chief Petty Officer s Academy, Senior
Enlisted Leadership Academy.
2. Working for over two decades in the Coast Guard I have had the privilege to serve and work
alongside great leaders. Ironically, some of the best lessons learned were from leaders who were the
antithesis to what I call inspired leadership . Due in large part to less than positive experiences, I
became somewhat of an authoritarian basing my perceived leadership skills to my professional power
base and developed a rather draconian leadership style. This style worked well for me to accomplish
goals assigned to my work force but it left something to be desired for

Argumentative Essay On The American Nightmare
The American Nightmare It s fair to say that the United States is a postcard for success and
opportunity, but what s missing is the equal chance for every US citizen to be able to achieve the
dream. In America, we base our accomplishments on the success and failure of others around us. We
have created a society built upon status, and therefore taken the Dream and stamped an unrealistic
American image all over it. There is no doubt that there is a dream, but the reality is that for many, it
only will be a dream. The gap between wealth and poverty is growing exponentially every year, and
the struggle to achieve the dream, is becoming more and more out of reach. According to the CPS,
More than half of America s working age families with children under age eighteen (approximately
20.1 million families) have annual incomes of $60,000 or below and on the opposite end of this, less
than 3% of families earn an income of $260,000 a year. The benefits of being in a higher class based
on economic and social status, labels the American Dream as invalid, where only the wealthy elite can
win. It would be favorable to say that You go as far as your dreams take you , or, You get out of the
system as much as you put in . The ideology of meritocracy is the core of the American Dream; it s
what makes America such an admirable country. But reality check, this isn t the way America seems to
be working. According to PBS, the middle class average salary has dropped since 1970 (adjusted for

Poverty and Homelessness in the United States Essay
Poverty and Homelessness in the United States Poverty in America is a subject that though everybody
recognizes is existent, most do not pay attention to very often. In 2010 the poverty line for a family of
four was $22,314.00 and 15.1% of Americans were living off of less than that (Tavernise, 2011).
While 15.1% is a high number to begin with, the truth is that many more people are living on the
verge of homelessness. Countless families are split up every night with children going to a friend s
house or an extended family member s house to ensure that everyone has somewhere to sleep. These
people are called the hidden homeless by the Charlotte Observer (Whitesides, 2011). Even more
people are either living in tent cities or in their ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
While reading about homelessness through the media, one must be sure to realize that even the articles
written include discourses and also that they omit details in order to keep the attention of the readers.
In Seattle the program that is to allow people living in cars to spend the night in church parking lots
seems like a great idea that will help out dozens of people. Something to consider though, is the fact
that many people are not willing to open up a safe haven, such as a church, to potentially dangerous.
Even though many people try to go through their days without judging people, it is inevitable to have
discourses towards people. In America people grow up hearing stories about how if you give a
homeless person money that he or she will most likely use it on beer or drugs. These discourses need
to be eliminated in order for the country s problem to be solved. The United States is known as a
country full of opportunities, a place where anyone can succeed but behind that visage is a reality that
is becoming worse and worse as time goes on. While people go throughout their days pretending that
everyone lives a comfortable life in a warm home, the truth is that at any given moment there are
thousands of Americans who are homeless. Problems that have been existent since the beginning of
the United States have contributed to this ever growing problem that is prominent now.

It is quite clear that I am not a participative and also not an authoritarian leader because I stand
between two of them as I score 12. The participative leader should have to get more than 15 and an
authoritarian leader have to get less than 5 but as I have score 12, I can say that I am more of a
participative leader not an Authotarian leader because I am more towards participative leadership
style. The participative style refers to the teamwork approach and I feel that I have this characteristic
more than any leadership style because I also like to do teamwork. I usually confer with group
members before making decision so it means I have the quality of a consultative leader which means I
also fall in the subtypes of a participative leader. But I can also be an Authoritarian leader when it will
be needed. The Assertiveness is also a thing which describes my leadership style. I score 17 in
leadership attributes Performa, how assertive are u? Form which I came to know I am assertive under
the characteristics of an effective leader. Assertiveness is referred to being forthright in expressing
feelings, opinion, demand and attitudes (Durbin, 2006). The

Supreme Court Cases In Schools
Ever since it was ratified the constitution was said to be the supreme law of the land. It has been the
deciding factor for court cases ever since it was written. The constitution also contains certain rights
we are guaranteed. Ever since the constitution was written there has been problems interpreting what
exactly these rights allow us to do. But one question that really hasn t even really been answered is
whether students are allowed to all these rights in a school building. The Supreme Court has been
working with cases that concern student s rights in school for a long time most profoundly in the 20th
century. I m now going to talk about some of the better known cases and explain them. This first case
is the first case that was a big deal across the nation and perhaps the most profound ... Show more

New Jersey vs TLO is another landmark Supreme Court case that deals with certain rights students
can have at the school building. Terry (TLO) was found smoking in the school bathroom. School
officials then searched her clothes and belongings for marijuana and other tobacco products. When
they found marijuana and other illegal drugs the school called the police and she was arrested. She
then went to court and the courts found her guilty of possessing and selling marijuana. She then
appealed her case saying the school violated her 4th amendment right. The 4th amendment guarantees
the right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable
searches and seizures. The Supreme Court ruled against TLO and in favor of the school. The court
said students have the right to privacy but that must be balanced with the schools job to maintain a
place where students can come to learn. The bottom line of this Supreme Court case is that your
belongings can be searched in the school building but not arbitrarily or without good

  • 2. Examples Of Post Colonialism In Things Fall Apart The novel Things Fall apart is a post colonial novel written by Nigerian novelist Chinua Achebe in 1958, before Nigerian sovereignty. The novel portrays the life of Okonkwo, an Ibo head and local wrestle champion in Nigerian village of Umuofia. The novel is divided into three parts, the first parts talks about his family and personal history, the customs and society of the Ibo, and the second and third sections introduce the influence of British colonialism and Christian missionaries on the Ibo community during the late 1800s. Achebe provides the examples of post colonialism through the symbolic representations of the colonizers, the introduction of their new religion, the creation of their own government, and explains how the colonizers have caused them to diverge from their original traditions and cultures. Stereotypes Of The Older Generation I think that sometimes the older generation will stereotypically think that the younger generation is lazy, irresponsible, ungrateful and that they have no respect for others. The older generation may feel that the younger generation has no moral values, that they are spoiled, and that they think they know it all. The younger generation may feel that the older generation is inflexible, that they are set in their ways, and that they are technologically unskilled. I think that these commonly formed opinions about different generations can create views that divide us. I feel that each generation could learn from the other if they are open and willing to do so. • 4. Child Development Theories Within The Field Of Psychology... As we know, there was a prominent debate on Nurture versus Nature in the field of psychology. Psychologists fought against each other to assert their own theories and statements. Nowadays, people have reached a consensus on this topic that the environment and the genes actually interact with each other and eventually lead to the typical features of individuals. Evidently, parent is one key topic in various child development theories since parents generally provide the whole living environment for children. For example, it is one dominant component of the microsystem in Bronfenbrenner s ecological approach.Parenting styles are referred as the general traits and characteristics of the strategies that parents used to deal with their children. There are 4 types of parenting styles which were divided by responsiveness and demandingness: authoritarian, authoritative, uninvolved and permissive. And it is not surprising that different parenting styles would likely generate divergent youth outcomes. Authoritarian parenting is known as high demandingness yet low responsiveness. Authoritarian parents are associated with the use of both psychological control and behavioral control. Parents will set harsh rules for their kids without any explanation or discussion. The relationship between parents and adolescents is tense. And conflicts will burst out during adolescence in both high intensity and high frequency. Therefore, these kinds of parenting generally have negative ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 6. Analysis Of Alice ; S Change In Attitude In Alice Walker s... However, Alice begins to realize the dynamics as the story progresses and new experiences emerge. I feel that Alice s change in attitude is Carroll s way of insinuating the ridiculousness or hypocrisy in the adult s and society s standard way of thinking. The first scene where the reader sees Alice take hold of her authority is when she becomes incredibly big at the White Rabbit s House. I feel that this scene is very significant because it shows how the shift in Alice s character is set up. In order for Alice to stand up against the Rabbit, she had to become bigger in size. I believe that this scene is a metaphor to how Carroll viewed the ridiculousness of how most adults viewed children, and was a way to show children reading the novel that one day they too will grow bigger in size and have the upper hand on the older adults. This scene also shows the fragility of the power dynamics. Carroll is insinuating that this idea that adults are more knowledgeable or superior because they are bigger than a child is nonsenses and can easily be altered. Once Alice realized she has the authority in herself, the entire dynamics of the story changes. Ren even states, in spite of the awkward inconvenience, (Alice) enjoys her large body size, for it gives her power to fight back (Ren 4). I believe that Alice begins to realize her own power and voice and in turn she discovers strength within herself. Power Poses And Their Effect On Cognition Power Poses and their Effect on Embodied Cognition Brandon Farley Washington State University Vancouver Abstract The current study was conducted to delve deeper into the relationship between muscular changes and subjects reported embodied cognitions. Thus was expected that power poses would have a significant increase on subject s academic related self esteem. Subjects were 33 undergraduate students in an undergraduate psychology research methods course (males=9, females=24). Participants were split into 2 randomized groups, no pose control group vs. power pose group. The control group was asked to relax as they wished, whereas the power pose group viewed images of different poses of which to imitate from. Experimental subjects copied 2 different power poses while holding the pose for 1 minute each. All participants rated questions regarding feeling frustrated about performance, how likely they are to feel self conscious. Opposite to the current hypothesis, results showed that power pose condition showed similar amounts of self esteem as the no pose condition group did. North America is the world s largest and most productive supplier of food and fiber (3). Canada is the second largest country in the world however it only contains five percent of land that is suitable for farming (7). This small farming area is divided in two different zones. The first zone is the great Prairies located in Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba and the mixed Wood Plains of the St. Lawrence River and the second zone is the Great Lakes regions (7). Approximately 80% of Canada s major farming is done the Prairies (7). There have been several recent studies that indicate most regions of Canada to warm up during the next 60 years (3). In the same manner The Island has important character development that causes the protagonists to change their behaviours. For instance, when Jordan Two Delta and Lincoln Six Echo escaped and went to Tom Lincoln s house. In this scene there was an altercation that resulted in the client Tom Lincoln dying, which was a great example of how the characters developed. After this scene the protagonist realized how careless and willing they were to hurt others in order to get the clones back to the facility. The scene allowed the protagonist Lincoln Six Echo to develop and take extra precautions to maintain safety. Six Echo would always be on his toes; look back every so often, and though through his plans. This leads into the theme that is related to brute force which is that people will do anything to survive. Perhaps that is why so many writers and poets muse about their own death in their writings. Keats and John Donne are two such examples of musing poets who share the human condition experience in When I Have Fears and Holy Sonnet 1. Keats begins each quatrain of the Shakespearean sonnet with a modifier, and each modifier indexes the subject of that quatrain. The modifier therefore gives his sonnet a three part structure. The first quatrain is what he fears; the second quatrain is what he beholds; the third quatrain is what he feels; and the ending couplet sums up all of the quatrains. However, the structure could ... Deception and illusion typically are detrimental for those who experience it. Keats does not reflect on losing the chance for love as something terribly unhappy, for he has a pre existing negative perception of love. Love is also unreflecting, so love won t be reciprocated. Keats then ends the segment about love half a line earlier in this quatrain than all other quatrains. Keats introduces the summation of the poem early, in the second part of the last line in quatrain four. This choice reflects how great his impending death weighs on his mind. In the final couplet, Keats s dark views of love leave him to stand alone and not experience the love mentioned in the previous quatrain. Of course, alone might not necessarily mean devoid of love; he could mean that he s alone because of his hopeless thoughts on the subject. The first set of major steps that Achilles undergoes is the call to adventure, the refusal to the call to action, and the meeting with the mentor. In Book 1 of the Iliad, Achilles is called to fight against the Trojan s to reclaim Helen, Menelaus wife. Later in the war, Chryseis and Briseis are taken as prizes from a battle. They are the daughters of a priest of Apollo named Chryses. After Chryses begs for his daughters back, the Greeks decide to give Briseis to him and have Chryseis stay. Improving Quality and Lowering Costs The payment incentives provided to healthcare providers under the PPACA will most likely lead to improved healthcare quality. In addition, reimbursement will shift from being based on quantity to being value based which will in turn incentivize providers to provide higher quality care. Although the Congressional Budget Office reported that the PPACA will reduce the U.S. budget deficit, it is doubtful and remains to be seen what will actually happen. Also, it is anticipated that businesses will pay the fines imposed by the PPACA because it will be cheaper than obtaining insurance coverage for the employees. C. Holding Insurance Companies Accountable A major pro of the PPACA is that it establishes several new rules and controls for insurance companies including requiring that they cannot deny coverage for pre existing conditions, must spend a certain percentage of premiums collected on actual patient care costs. These new rules provide protection for consumers and ensure insurance companies are held accountable for the care and services provided to patients that are enrolled in their plans. Another major issue that has raised considerable debate and even led to law suits being filed is the constitutionality of the PPACA. Those who oppose healthcare reform argue that it is unconstitutional for Congress to require that every person purchase health insurance. However, the PPACA improves access to healthcare which ... • 39. Increase in the Legal Drinking Age Another reason why the legal drinking age was changed is because of the fact that the adolescent brain is not fully developed; it is supposed that excessive alcohol intake causes brain damage in teens. However, in order for damage to occur, the drinking has to be extremely excessive. If there are only a few of these extreme bingeing episodes, they do no harm to the adolescent brain (Minimum Drinking Age). David J. Hanson, a professor at the University of New York at Potsdam, states, There s no evidence that drinking in moderation damages developing brains. If it did, most Italians, Jews, French, Greeks, Spaniards, Portuguese and many others would be suffering mental defects (ProQuest Staff). The argument that occasional binge drinking causes brain damage in teens is not supported by the facts. The methods being used to inform early twenty first century youth about alcohol misuse are ineffective and impractical. Alcohol educations programs are mainly about scaring teens out of any type of alcohol consumption (McCardell), which in reality makes drinking attractive to them because of the mystery involved (Minimum Drinking Age). As a result, the programs intended to prevent underage drinking actually have the opposite effect (Ogilvie); instead, alcohol education should be based on the reality of the bingeing environments teens and young adults are dealing with (McCardell). Because of the higher drinking age, high school and collegiate educators are not able to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

For instance, in the case of Jordan Davis, the stand your ground defense was abused by Dunn. • 46. Argumentative Essay On The American Nightmare The American Nightmare It s fair to say that the United States is a postcard for success and opportunity, but what s missing is the equal chance for every US citizen to be able to achieve the dream. In America, we base our accomplishments on the success and failure of others around us. We have created a society built upon status, and therefore taken the Dream and stamped an unrealistic American image all over it. There is no doubt that there is a dream, but the reality is that for many, it only will be a dream. The gap between wealth and poverty is growing exponentially every year, and the struggle to achieve the dream, is becoming more and more out of reach. According to the CPS, More than half of America s working age families with children under age eighteen (approximately 20.1 million families) have annual incomes of $60,000 or below and on the opposite end of this, less than 3% of families earn an income of $260,000 a year. The benefits of being in a higher class based on economic and social status, labels the American Dream as invalid, where only the wealthy elite can win. It would be favorable to say that You go as far as your dreams take you , or, You get out of the system as much as you put in . The ideology of meritocracy is the core of the American Dream; it s what makes America such an admirable country. But reality check, this isn t the way America seems to be working. While 15.1% is a high number to begin with, the truth is that many more people are living on the verge of homelessness. Countless families are split up every night with children going to a friend s house or an extended family member s house to ensure that everyone has somewhere to sleep. Something to consider though, is the fact that many people are not willing to open up a safe haven, such as a church, to potentially dangerous. Even though many people try to go through their days without judging people, it is inevitable to have discourses towards people.
