and within these we learn that some need a safe haven for their despair. Some need a clean and

To start with, the setting of this story takes place in what is most likely Spain. The title plays a
big role in the setting. The older waiter is trying to communicate the reason the man is there in
the middle of the night, and that is because the cafe is in fact a clean, well lighted place. The
lightness and order are the reasons he is there. He could go anywhere else to drink, but he is an
old deaf man that is there to get away from the darkness of the night. He is lonely and has lost

rational response to the 16th and 17th century Scientific Revolution, as well as major developments
in philosophical thinking, such as ideas proposed by Rene Descartes. During the Enlightenment,

One could argue that the idea of hell alone could be a Christian ideal, but this idea belongs to
many other religions and is far too broad. Dante describes the inferno as having nine different
circles, each with a different level of punishment. The nine different circles do not pertain to
Christian literature, however, Luke 12:47 48 does suggest there are different types of punishment.
When Virgil and Dante are about to set their quest into the inferno, he tells Dante that he will see
and hear the screams of people in their second death. This idea of a second death comes from
Revelations 21.8 when it is explained that the the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable,
and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their
