Most common causes of hematuria in cows are associated with calving and include ascending urinary tract infections by opportunistic pathogens like E. coli and Corynebacterium renale. Other potential causes of hematuria in cattle include bracken fern toxicosis, urolithiasis, urethral obstruction, bladder rupture, renal failure, azotemia from pre-renal, renal or post-renal causes, hemolytic uremic syndrome from E. coli O157H7, and nephrosis from any degenerative condition mainly affecting the tubules.
