European Colonialism, Imperialism, and Cultural...
European Imperialism and Cultural Superiority
Many factors contributed to the colonization of Africa by European powers between 1895 and 1905.
Among these factors were the effects of European history, the growing capitalist economy, and the
growing competition between European powers. Most important was the belief that European culture
was superior to African culture. During the height of imperialism, the vast majority of the African
continent was controlled by Europe (ìExtentî 19). It is important to understand what gave the
momentum for European dominance at the time.
Imperialism is present in European history, beginning with the Roman Empire (Lenin). Lugard

Europeans found opportunity to create monopolies in the newly conquered lands (Lenin). It was also
necessary to find new sources of raw materials, in order to keep production going (Hobson). This was
largely a result of the Industrial Revolution (Hobson). Increased demand for raw materials led to
increased demand for imperialism (Lenin). Cecil Rhodes, a British advocate for imperialism, believed
it would solve Englandís domestic economic problems (Lenin). People who were likely to gain wealth
from colonization further pushed the movement (Schumpeter).
The element of competition between European powers played a role in imperialism in Africa. When
England was the only dominant economic power, imperialism was unnecessary (Hobson). When other
nations began to gain power and become significant competition for each other, the argument
developed that it was important to stop rivals from gaining the upper hand (Paton). Paton writes about
the importance of keeping colonial gains for Britain (Paton). Countries felt that they had no choice in
seeking colonies because they would not be able to compete economically if they didnít (Schumpeter).
Religion was a strong influence in pushing Europeans towards imperialism. They believed that it was
important to teach Christian beliefs to the Africans (Lugard). Missionaries went to Africa, attempting

The Quad Cities Area Adult Population
The Quad Cities Area adult population generally fails to meet the USDA s recommended dietary
guideline of consuming at least five servings of fruits and vegetables per day, with only 35.7%
reporting meeting these guidelines (Professional Research Consultants, 2015). This policy analysis
will review current community efforts within the Quad Cities area that are concentrating on improving
fruit and vegetable consumption of area adults. Additional policy options to help increase access,
knowledge and skills regarding fruit and vegetable consumption will also be reviewed in terms of
strengths, weaknesses, feasibility, and economic impact.
This is specifically prevalent within the low income population (those who are just above the federal

The USDA classifies the different food groups as fruits, vegetables, grains, proteins, dairy, and oils.
Each of these food groups has specific serving recommendations and other considerations regarding
food choices and consumption. In regards to vegetables, intake should vary among the subgroups dark
green, red and orange, legumes, starchy, and other. Servings per day should be 2 ½ 3, depending on
personal needs. Having a variety of vegetables, as close to the whole form as possible, offers an
abundance of essential nutrients such as Vitamin C, A, K, E, B6, fiber, potassium, niacin, just to name
a few. Fruits offer similar nutrients as vegetables and should be consumed daily, ideally two servings a
day. Fruit juice can count as a serving of fruit as long as it is 100% fruit juice. However, the benefit of
fiber is lacking from this source and added sugar may be present. Ideally, it should have no added
sugar if choosing it as a serving of fruit (USDA, 2016).

Research Paper On Siberian Tigers
The Siberian Tiger
Have you ever heard of a siberian tiger? Many people say that they are scary creatures that can eat
you, but that s not the case. If you come close to them they might think you are trying to take over
their territory, or if it is a female with babies it might think that you are trying to take away their
children. Siberian tigers want to live happy lives like any average human would. Walking into a tiger s
territory is like a random stranger walking in your house and staring at you, continued by taking
pictures then leaving like nothing ever happened. Would you want that? Siberian tigers are endangered
and we need to help them before they become extinct.

Veterinary Science Application Essay Sample
The experience that initially sparked my interest towards veterinary medicine was when I attended
Boiler Vet Camp at Purdue University during high school. Prior to camp, I thought veterinarians either
worked on livestock or in small animal clinics. I was then exposed to the wide variety of veterinary
career options in shelter medicine, research, and public health. I was also introduced to the challenges
of getting into veterinary school. Being surrounded by people who shared the same interests as I did,
motivated me to be more involved during college to see what all the profession offers. My Haiti study
abroad trip during the 2015 2016 school year, narrowed my interests within the veterinary profession
to education and public health. When a Haitian student asked me about signs of illness in goats, I
learned that not everyone has ease of access to veterinary medicine. I took this opportunity to teach
him about proper management skills that can lead to healthier goats, people, and an improved
environment. This triangle is the core for the One Health initiative. As a veterinarian, I want to be a

The Industrial Organization (I/O) model basically assumes that a firm s strategy is a set of
commitments and actions flowing from the characteristics of the industry in which the firm has
decided to compete (Hitt, Ireland Hoskission, 2013, p. 16); while the Resource Based model assumes
that each organization is a collection of unique resources and capabilities (Hitt, Ireland Hoskission,
2013, p.17). SAIC seems to be a very good example what and how the Resource Based model firm
should operate; a prime example of how the company is currently operating can be seen by the
following: on May 24, 2012, SAIC was awarded a prime contract by the Defense Intelligence Agency
(DIA) to provide linguist, operational, translation and management services in support of the National
Media Exploitation Center (NMEC). SAIC will provide linguistics and other translation services to
the government under a five year Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) contract worth $33 million. The
award calls for SAIC to assist the NMEC, which provides collection, processing, exploitation and
dissemination for intelligence, defense, homeland security, law enforcement and other U.S. federal

Symbolism In The Thief
The Thief and the Stalinist Period
As a movie depicting the Stalinist period, The Thief eloquently wrapped a historical and political
portrayal in an emotional journey of Sanya, Katya, and Tolyan. Some important aspects of the movie
that provide a strong nuance of the Stalinist era are the financial struggle among commoners, the
positive attitude towards Stalin, and the paternalistic emphasis. Additionally, some indirect symbolism
in the movie may portray the relationship between Stalin and Russians during the Stalinist period.
Financial struggle was the emphasis early in the movie, portraying how difficult life could be during
the Stalinist period. In the beginning of the movie, Katya gave birth to Sanya. While this might
symbolize the start of Sanya s story and life, the scene also signified how the lack of wealth made pain
and suffering dominate the life of the characters.
As the movie continued, this hardship seemed to permeate into the life ... Show more content on

Moving beyond the storyline, The Thief offered three main characters that could represent the Russian
society in the Stalinist period by through their images and attitudes. Aside from retelling a story of
fatherhood, The Thief indirectly symbolized the legacy of Stalin with its political failure and
destructive impacts (Gillespie 75).
To summarize, The Thief can symbolize Stalinist era in two ways. Using the values portrayed in the
movie, it showed the significance of financial struggle, Stalin s popularity, and paternalistic views
during the Stalinist period. Additionally, it can also represent the complicated relationship between
Stalin and the Russian people using the views and behaviors of its main characters: Tolyan, Sanya, and

The Industrialization Movement
In the late 1800 s, a thing called Industrialization started to occur. Industrialization is when our
economy went from an agriculture (farming) economy to an industrial (manufacturing) economy.
There were many very important leaders in the industrialization movement in the late 1800 s. Andrew
Carnegie, George Eastman, Henry Ford and J.D Rockefeller were all Captains of Industry and had a
big impact on the industrialization movement and made it more positive than negative.
Industrialization had a positive impact on American society. The Transcontinental Railroad, the steel
industry and the automotive industry all had big advantages during this industrialization movement.

would have less railroads and less buildings in the cities. Steel is cheap which allowed us to building

God Breathed And Is Useful For Teaching, Rebuking,...
16 All Scripture is God breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in
righteousness, (2 Timothy 3:16)
It s amazing how similar, and yet how different a couple can be. take my parents for instance. Both of
them enjoyed cooking, but they went about it in completely different ways.
My mother is the, by the book recipe follower. She may deviate if, over time she has found she had to
make some adjustments in seasoning, but by and large she is going to be exact, and do what the recipe
calls for.
My Dad was more the seat of the pants type. If my mother was the classical music type in cooking,
my Dad was the improvisational jazz type. I don t think he ever followed a recipe in his entire life. He
would go to the kitchen, begin looking at what we had and create something. You never knew what
you were going to get but it was usually pretty good.
Two different approaches, but they came up with the same results. They were able to do this because,
while they may have had a different way to go about it, they both still had to follow the rules of , the
physics of cooking. They both knew if you wanted something to taste good, and to be consistent you
had to have the same ingredients. Every time. Leaving out an ingredient could prove disastrous, and
could be the difference between a delicious meal and a disaster.

Little Endian And The Advantages And Disadvantages Of Each...
1. Describe Big Endian, Little Endian and the advantages and disadvantages of each approach.
Memory is a lot like a large array but rather than using the term index to indicate specific locations in
memory; we use the term address . Each address stores one element at the level of the byte (Curran,
2006). Although some data types exceed 1 byte; they can be assigned to span more than a single byte
to accommodate larger values.
Within a byte the value is determined by checking the bits right to left. This means that the right most
$#$#0$#$# can be o or 1 value and any bits towards the left indicate a higher value. There are two
ways in which data can be stored in memory. The little endian approach stores new values in a way
that starts at the left and expands to the right, so that each new piece of data is added to the right , ...

The small endian has the advantage that it doesn t feature the overhead of shifting bytes all over the
place that big endian involves. Additionally once conceived in the above light (the last example),
small endian surpasses big endian in terms of understandability.
2. Describe what an overflow is and how it occurs. Describe some of the problems that overflow
causes, one area that you should research (among others) is the concept of integer based security
attacks.
Basically an overflow is the result where a digit for example, is too large to occupy a certain memory
space and thereby smears other memory locations corrupting data or presenting a security risk to the
operating system. The result of an overflow can cause erratic program behavior, memory access
errors, incorrect results, software vulnerabilities and/or the crash of the operating system.
According to Wikipedia ( Overflow Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, 2015), there are many types of

Essay on Models of Corrections
The history of correctional thought and practice has been marked by enthusiasm for new approaches,
disillusionment with these approaches, and then substitution of yet other tactics (Clear 59). During the
mid 1900s, many changes came about for the system of corrections in America. Once a new idea goes
sour, a new one replaces it. Prisons shifted their focus from the punishment of offenders to the
rehabilitation of offenders, then to the reentry into society, and back to incarceration. As times and the
needs of the criminal justice system changed, new prison models were organized in hopes of lowering
the crime rates in America. The three major models of prisons that were developed were the medical,
model, the community model, and the crime ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Some people may not have a psychological disorder that put them in prison and others may never
recover from their illness. This program is a good idea if combined with other forms of punishment as
well.
The next big idea in the system of corrections was the idea of the community model. This model was
created during the 1960s after movements such as the Civil Rights Movement, the war on poverty, and
the resistance to the Vietnam war showed that social and political values have a major impact on the
criminal justice system. The community model of corrections was based on the assumption that the
criminal justice system should aim at reintegrating the offender into the community(Clear 56). This
model of corrections focused on alternatives to incarceration such as probation or parole. Officials felt
that prisons were to be avoided because they were artificial institutions that interfered with the
offender s ability to develop a crime free lifestyle(Clear 56). Many thought that incarceration was a
negative influence on criminals because it took away the skills needed to successfully become a part
of society once released. Under this program, an offender would work with a counselor to find a job,
and money so that they were not left to the streets. When their sentence was up, they may be put in a
half way house for monitoring how well they were adapting to society. This system failed during the
1970s when

Lincoln s Second Inaugural Address Summary
Abraham Lincoln had a purpose for everything he did, including when he wrote his speech. When
Lincoln wrote his speech he wanted to let everyone know and understand that war was here. War was
coming to a close at the time Lincoln delivered his speech. Lincoln made sure his speech was short
and simple. When he spoke his speech, he made sure that it was not a happy speech. Lincolns second
inaugural address was not a happy or rejoicing day for him. It was a sad and disappointing time
because it was true that the war had ended. That didn t mean all in the world was well and happy and
that things would go back to how they were. Things would never go back to normal. Lincolns speech

because soon after he was assassinated. The speech itself was remarkably brief. Historian Don E.
Fehrenbacher wrote: In the Second Inaugural, [Lincoln] revealed his most deeply held convictions to a
national audience in a way that no other president has done throughout all of American history. In this
religious belief, Lincoln had found the strength to persevere, and at the time of his Second Inaugural
when it was apparent that the Union cause would eventually be won, he publicly acknowledged its
tenet that the final outcome had been foreordained all along. It must be emphasized that this view had
not bred within Lincoln any passivity or Hamlet like indecisiveness ; rather, just the opposite.

Strengths And Weaknesses In English Class
Did you know that 92 percent of all English students end up passing the class, but that only 84 percent
of choir students pass English class? In elementary school, I was able to write and read efficiently.
However, my comprehension of what as I read as I got older was not as good as it could have been. I
was able to read books and understand the main points, but often I would forget little details. My past
few years in English have been successful and I have been able to achieve many of the goals I have set
for myself as an English student. In this paper, I will address my strengths, my weaknesses, what I
enjoy the most, and how I learn the best. I have some strengths and weaknesses and ways I learn the
best doing hands on learning and activities. My strengths in English are writing papers and doing
hands on stuff. My weaknesses are comprehending things and doing bookwork. In my previous years
of English, I have done well and my grades are proof of that. I have averaged A s and B s. One of my
major strengths has been projects where I have to make a google slide presentation and then present it
in front of the class. Tests are also a strong point for me in English. This is because I am able to make
connections easily and link ideas back to main details. However, sometimes I struggle to make
connections if I did not understand or enjoy the material, but for the most part, making connections
and doing well on tests has always been a strength of mine. My struggles in English

Many Cycles Differ Slightly From Year To Year, Decade To
Many cycles differ slightly from year to year, decade to decade; for example, the climate, economies,
and wars all follow their own rollercoaster like paths that adjust slightly after each run. This pattern of
repetition with a difference recurs throughout Gabriel García Márquez s magical realist novel One
Hundred Years of Solitude. The story follows the generations of the Buendía family in the town of
Macondo. However, the spiral the family follows collapses inward on itself with each passing

Thus, the apparent lack of a motherly figure further distances Aureliano Babilonia from the typical
love children experience, likely contributing to his reserved and initially tentative nature. Rather than
growing up like the other children of the Buendía family, Fernanda locks Aureliano Babilonia in
Colonel Aureliano Buendía s workshop. His infancy spent in the workshop shapes his future obsession
of studying Melquíades parchments, as he likely associates the workshop with safety and comfort, and
naturally absorbs himself into every aspect of the room. This suggests that, without an adequate
amount of human interaction, one is largely shaped by their surroundings during infancy, leading to a
more analytical or observant nature that arises in place of observing human interactions and
developing connections with others. However, Aureliano Babilonia s youth is not entirely devoid of
human contact. At around three years old, he escapes the workshop, appearing in front of Aureliano
Segundo, his grandfather, as if he were not a human child but the encyclopedia definition of a cannibal

individual than a normal child. Moreover, his comparison to a cannibal, a term that Amaranta Úrsula

Effects Of Depression On Young Females And Increase The...
Depression decreases a person s overall quality of life. The National Institute of Mental Health
(NIMH) a government agency, affirms that depression is the most common form of mood disorder in
the United States (NIHM, 2015). Depression involves a combination of genetic, biological,
environmental, and psychological factors (NIMH, 2015). It affects work, family life and relationships.
Although depression usually affects adults, children and adolescents experience depression and are
most likely affected into adulthood. (Guttmann Sameroff, 2004). This paper will evaluate how
conflicts between mother and daughter relationships directly affects depressive symptoms in
adolescent girls. Finally, this paper examines the preventive and intervention strategies to help control
depression in young females and increase the relationship between mother and daughter during
adolescence years. Recent studies have shown that females are at a greater risk to experience
depression than males (Daley Rao, 2000, Morris, McGrath, Goldman Rottenberg, 2014). Adolescence
is a time in young girl s lives that they are faced with transitions. A time when adolescence begins at
13 years old (Morris, McGrath, Goldman, Rottenberg, 2014) and young girls are faced with increases
in social and academic demands (Daley Rao, 2000). According to Gutman and Sameroff (2004), this
is a time in an adolescent girl s life that stressors can predict more serious problems (Gutman
Sameroff, 2004).

Safe Night Out Aesop
Aesop has written a multitude of sticky stories The Boy Who Cried Wolf, The Tortoise and the Hare,
The Wolf in Sheep s Clothing just to name a few. In common, these tales are carefully encoded with
concrete imagery. From the many sticky works that Aesop wrote, the power of vivid and tangible
topics is demonstrated by the mere fact that Aesop s tales have been told for over 2,500 years and are
still prevalent today. The Nature Conservancy (TNC), for example, also capitalized concrete ideas in
order to help protect environmentally precious land by using perceptible words and ideas. Instead of
using directional language to describe an area, they named it Mount Hamilton Wilderness so that
people should definitively identify the location. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Likewise, the Velcro Theory of Memory claims that rather than storing memory like a filing cabinet,
like Velcro, remembering things is like the two sides pressing together as the brain hosts a multitude
of loops and hooks. Consider Jane Elliott s explanation of the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr.
to her third grade classroom. To make the abstract idea of racism concrete, she separated brown eyed
children from blue eyed children, proclaiming that the brown eyed children were superiors. After the
children experienced concrete racism, Elliott switched the roles of two groups and further
demonstrated the concreteness of racism. Altogether, in order for ideas to be sticky, they must be
concrete. As with Stone Yamashita s capitalization of concrete techniques to develop a partnership
with Disney, ideas must be concrete for novices and more complex for experts. Likewise, as with
Kaplan, ideas need to be realistic and fleshed out. In short, like General Mills and the Saddleback
Church s sticky ideas, people are attracted to concrete ideas they just stick better. Heath, C. Heath, D.

The Carboxylate Group In Tamiflu
Additional questions:
1. Why would removing the carboxylate groups result in the compound s activity being nullified?
The carboxylate group in Tamiflu provides it with a strong ionic interaction with an arginine residue.
This interaction will hold the drug molecule in place in the binding pocket of the enzyme, allowing it
to elicit an effect. Removal of this group would result in the arginine Tamiflu interaction being
removed, which would result in a poorer affinity for the binding pocket. The Tamiflu molecule will be
far less likely to exhibit good binding and therefore the biological effect of the drug would be
diminished.
2. Identify the binding groups and their optimal alignment with one another, paying particular
attention to the hydrogen bonds. Provide at least one example for each type of interaction.
a. Hydrophobic
The non polar chain attached to the ether in Tamiflu has a non polar interaction with the side chain of
a glutamic acid residue, where the residue fits in between the two side chains of the Tamiflu.
b. Hydrogen bonds
The amide of Tamiflu forms a hydrogen bond with the guanidine group of an arginine residue. The
nitrogen of the guanidine acts as a hydrogen bond donor and the amide of the Tamiflu molecule acts as
a hydrogen bond acceptor.
The NH2 group of the Tamiflu also forms hydrogen bonds with an aspartic acid residue, where NH2 is
the hydrogen bond donor and COO is the hydrogen bond acceptor.

make me a suitable candidate for the position of Pensions Administration Support Officer at Croydon
Council. My role as a Pensions Administrator at Kent County Council has given me experience of
working the Local Government Pension Scheme thereby meeting one of the desirable experiences on
the person specification. Moreover, I consider this to be proven experience as only after 7 months I
was given a promotion from Pensions Support Assistant to Pensions Administrator. Kent County
Council also administers Police and Fire Pensions schemes. I believe this is an advantage to me if I

These experiences in customer service have contributed to my professional attitude and personable
manner. I have developed the necessary skills to build rapport, which will provide a high standard of
customer service to external and internal key agencies of Croydon Council. As part of my role as
Pensions Support Assistant I was responsible for managing the main office outlook email account,
determining the urgency of emails, and allocating the emails into the correct mail boxes to be dealt
with accordingly by the Pensions Administration team. I was also in control of maintaining and
ordering stationery via Oracle procurement, and chasing and tracking any items which had not been
delivered on time. Due to this experience I feel confident in my ability to undertake the tasks required
of a Pensions Administration Support Officer. At Taxfile I was responsible for bookkeeping, and
collecting data from clients, which I would input into Excel spreadsheets to process, and extract
information in order to submit VAT returns, or annual company accounts. One of my strengths is
interpreting numerical data and the ensuring its accuracy; which is why I feel sure of my ability to
provide information needed for Benefit calculations relating to payments made to pensioners, using
spreadsheets. As a Pensions Administrator, I process original certificates

United Nations Population Fund And Its Effect On Society...
For many people, the most magical day of their life is the day they marry the love of their life. After
years of searching for that one special person, you have finally committed yourself to spend the rest of
your days on earth growing with that one special someone. Unfortunately marriage isn t always so
special. For some, it is a sentence to slavery. Today, one out of every three girls in the developing
world is married before the age of eighteen with the largest concentration existing in Southwest Asia (
United Nations Population Fund ). The marrying of young boys and girls, even in cases where it is not
forced, can lead to physical abuse and torture, health complications and the termination of any
possible future educational endeavors ( International Center for Research on Women , 2006).
For the nation of Pakistan, approximately 21 percent of young girls are married before the age of 18,
and many of these marriages are forced ( Girls Not Brides ). Although this number is lower than the
regional average, the forced marriage problem in Pakistan is highly concentrated in poorer areas,
endangering those who are socioeconomically at risk. Furthermore, Pakistan ranks as the sixth most
populated country in the world, exemplifying the devastating amount of young girls at risk for forced
child marriage. Note that both girls and boys are affected by child marriage, but girls represent the
overwhelming majority of those sold into marriage (Ahmad, 2014).

Students From Low Income Families
Some people believe that students from low income families have little to offer. However, I consider
that low income students have extra to offer as they have emerged from harsh situations that have
nurtured hard work and encouraged their eagerness to succeed. My families financial situation is
below the poverty line which is why I am pursuing a higher education and career. For months during
high school, my family and I would receive our daily nutrients from soups and undergo months
deprived of electricity and water. Today, my family continues to struggle through financial hardships
that have led to various ventures in my life. For example, physical and mental strain. Yet, even after
every hardship, I ve realized that it is because of the hardships that I am pursuing a career in law and
that I ve grown to become a strong, independent woman. As I learn from my hardships, I can reassure
you that providing an impoverished student like me with the opportunity to enroll in law school will
become the biggest blessing to both my professional and educational development.
Early on the summer of my freshman year, my mother, the sole provider of my family, lost her job to a
work injury that left her in disability. After losing her employment, my family was no longer able to
pay the rent and home utilities punctually. At that time, I was on my last months of high school,
preparing myself to attend mandatory orientations for CAMP, a migrant program at the California

Dbq 3rd Estate French Revolution
During the 1700s, France s government was run by a three system estate system. The First Estate was
made up by the powerful clergy members, while the Second Estate was made with nobles. Peasants
and working men made the Third Estate, also the largest estate. In this large estate there was a little
class named the Bourgeoisie was a part of the Third Estate. Though the Bourgeoisie was highly
educated and always had stable professions, they were not set aside from the peasants. The Third
Estate was treated very poorly during the 1700s. Life was not suitable for the working class. The
mistreatment and inequality led to the French Revolution. Inequality during this time period meant
that things were not the same throughout each class. Unequal power between the estates, abuse of the
Third Estate, and the taxes and price raises were the three reasons that outweighed the many political,
social, and economic factors that led to the French Revolution. ... Show more content on

Even though the Third Estate made up the majority of the population, they only got one vote. As seen

Class Disparities In The Victorian Era
While there were many advancements in technology and literature in the Victorian Era, there were
also many disadvantages; these included child labor, class disparities, and atrocious living conditions.
There were incredible novels, artwork, and machinery created during the Victorian Era. However, the
people were treated horribly. Children were put to work, and severely abused while they were there.
The poor were seen as dirt on the bottom of the upper class s shoes, and were rarely allowed to
advance in society. Citizens lived in squalor, and many became ill because of it. Victorian society will
always have a negative connotation because of how the people were treated during that time. Dickens
is a major proponent of that connotation. He wrote ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The upper classes had all of the political power, and the middle and lower classes had absolutely none.
There was also a group below the working class called the sunken class. They lived in poverty and
struggled immensely in their daily lives. While the lower class people were working for a living, the
rich were living glamorously. They had large houses, plots of land, and maids and butlers. Even with
all of these amenities, the upper class paid no taxes. The citizens under the aristocrats paid nearly all
of the taxes, even though they worked for pennies a day. This created hostility towards the upper class,
and made the class disparity even more severe. In A Christmas Carol, by Charles Dickens, Ebenezer
Scrooge was a wealthy, upper class man. He did not do anything to help the poor or the lower class
society. Meanwhile, Bob Cratchit had a sizable family that lived in a cramped house, and struggled to
make ends meet. Scrooge treated Bob Cratchit, his employee, poorly, and said multiple times that the
poor should be able to work their way out of poverty. He was incredibly disconnected from the lower
classes, and this showed in his treatment of them. He was unaware of the struggles of the poor, and he
was unwilling to learn until he was forced to. This is one very apparent example in fiction of the class
disparities of Victorian

The Implications Of Bank Specialization On Its Financial...
When making a financial analysis on a bank, the type of business it conducts need to be considered.
Specialization can lead a bank to operate in different practices and have a varied structure of their
balance sheet. If the structure and composition of the bank is not to be considered, financial statement
analysis will provide misleading information. This report will investigate the implications of bank
specialization on its financial statement analysis.
Specialization
Larger banks specialize in customer deposits due to the larger availability of liquidity present as a
result of economies of scale and synergy; small banks tend to specialize in customer loans. To fund
these operations, small banks have a great level of liabilities relative ... Show more content on

When comparing financial analysis of varying banks this can lead to asymmetric information7.
Empirical studies show that specialization does not systematically carry across different sized banks,
however the size of a bank is an important factor.
Banks with subsidiaries tend to specialize in a unique way, the parent bank tends to specialize in
numerous areas, their subsidiaries are structured to specialize in certain fields. For instance in
Luxemburg, parent banks tend to specialize in interbank lending whilst their subsidiaries have seen
interbank activities falling and an increase in customer loans. Facts such as this need to be considered
for financial analysis.8
Size
The size of the bank has a significant impact on its financial statement. Large banks have
comparatively easy access to purchased funds and capital markets compared to small ones9. Large
banks usually use more purchased

A Yellow Raft in Blue Water by Michael Dorris
While growing up Michael Dorris never encountered a Native American literary character that he
could relate too, and being of Modoc Tribe of California descent, this was something that was very
important to him. After graduating from Georgetown University, and earning a Master s Degree at
Yale, Dorris began to create these characters and ideas that he had longed for himself during
childhood. He married his literary partner, Louise Erdrich, who was also of Native American descent.
They had three children together, plus the three that Dorris had adopted, all of which were born on
Native American reservations. All three of his adopted children suffered from fetal alcohol syndrome.
During a twenty year period before Dorris death, he published fourteen books and over one hundred
articles. In 1987 he published his first novel A Yellow Raft in Blue Water. A Yellow Raft in Blue Water
is divided into three sections narrated by three different Native American women: Rayona, Christine
and Ida. All three of these women are all related. Rayona is the daughter of Christine, and Christine
believes she is the daughter of Ida, but Ida is actually her half sister and cousin. All three sections were
a part of a larger story; they all helped support or complete each other. The structure of this novel
forces us as readers to be more active. It causes us to look more closely, and fit together the stories of
the three women. When the ladies are explaining the same event, it sometimes feels

Open Carry Law In Texas
In the light of recent events and crimes across the nation, the Texas legislature has adopted a new law
in attempt to decrease crime. The new law, which allows for the licensed gun holders to carry their
weapon openly, went into effect on January 1st, 2016, and it is particularly disquieting to some due to
the size of the state of Texas. Normally, as with any law, there will be unintended social consequences
that affect both those with position of power and the general public. Thus, the introduction of the open
carry law in Texas will create misunderstandings between the public and authorities and will
psychologically affect the general public s idea of firearms.
General Confusion of the Authorities
Overall, the new law in texas is still not ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The main reason for the introduction of the open carry law was to reduce crime due to the threat a gun
poses and how it will deter potential thieves, robbers and criminals from injuring an individual due to
the presence of a gun. Thus, it is intended so that guns will make the civilians feel safe and create fear
in the potential criminals. While open carry law states do have a 23% less crime rate than non open
carry law states, there hasn t been any data suggesting that open carry law caused the decrease in
crime, just that the crime in that specific state is lowered than the other ones (politifacts) . There is,
however, information that the presence of a gun does cause trepidation within an individual. When
someone is in possession of a gun, they tend to be more aggressive (Lurie, 2015). Also, due to the
current occurrences in America, the general public also has instilled a psychological fear when they
see guns. With American mass shooting incidents [rising] to 247 a year, it is no doubt that gun control
has become an important topic to the public [washington post]. People have a similar imbedded fear
similar to phobias to guns as they do for snakes and other natural predators (mother jones) . With the
new open carry law being passed, there will be a larger public exposure to guns and other firearms.
While these may be carried in holsters, they are open for all to see, whether criminal or innocent. In
the short run, people will panic at the sight of these and feel as if their personal security is threatened,
but with constant exposure to the firearm, the public will slowly become desensitized to guns (Csulb).
With the desensitization, guns will become more commonplace and the fears that once arose within
individuals will be subsided. Overall, while this tactic of allowing to openly carry a firearm is an
attempt at trying to

This was mitigated in Britain by acts of parliament enacted in 1802 and later years, in other places of

States, the Supreme Court declared Congressional child labour laws unconstitutional in 1918 and

exhibits the characteristics that he holds complaints against. Throughout this Bildungsroman narrative,
Holden searches for his identity. He tries to figure out his place either in the adult or child realm.
Holden possesses a combination of fear and hatred for phonies . Holden uses this term to describe a

Mercantile Policies During The 17th And 18th Centuries
Outline the main mercantile policies pursued by European nations during the 17th and 18th centuries.
Apply economic principles to analyse the impact of such policies on the countries that adopted them.
Mercantilism was at its peak in Europe during the 17th and 18th century, this essay will look at the
policies adopted by Britain, the Dutch republic and France and see how they affected their economies
and industries as well as that of the other nations.
Britain
The British empire used various mercantile policies to attempt to increase the country s wealth, Britain
mainly granted monopolies and privileges in order to restrict competition in sea trade.
Tariffs
Britain used tariffs on imports coming in from Dutch vessels, mainly against Dutch fish imports to
develop the English fishing industry (Findlay and O Rourke, pg. 242, 2007). Britain used tariffs on the
Dutch vessels in order to allow the fishing industry to grow in Britain whilst also allowing enough fish
in to satisfy demand. As mercantilists saw the trade between nations as a zero sum game the British
still saw this as a way it was reducing Dutch trade whilst also increasing their own.
However, tariffs can be looked at in the economic sense of reducing overall welfare due to the tariff
being introduced as it pushes the prices upwards. This tends to affect the economic welfare of
consumers more than producers. Therefore, it could be argued that for the consumers in Britain this
policy negatively affected them whilst

both maintain the Dual and Triple Alliances, and Germany was at the center of European diplomacy
during both era s, however it was in different ways. Therefore, while both policies did not share many
similarities, they did have their key differences. For instance, during the rule of Otto Von Bismarck,
Germany had a strong and well developed foreign policy. This is because through the use of foreign

Germany. Additionally, Bismarck also prevented threats to Germany through use of defensive

Kaiser Wilhelm had their similarities and differences, both decisions were extremely significant to
World War I in a variety of different ways. For instance, the foreign policies of Otto Von Bismarck
were significant to World War I in the sense that one of Bismarck s primary aims was to weaken and
isolate France. Additionally, Bismarck used diplomacy in order to protect the newly unified German
Empire, as well as to settle disputes and prevent a large European War. Furthermore, Bismarck aimed
to protect the unification of Germany through use of foreign policies and also focused on advancing
their economic interests. Thus, Bismarck had limited interest in building a world empire, unlike
Wilhelm II. In general, through Bismarck s foreign policy tactics and agreements, he successfully
manipulated several countries, and his alliances via his agreements ultimately created a great deal of
tension, and caused Europe to have World War I. Meanwhile, Kaiser Wilhelm II s foreign policy
tactics were significant to World War I as his decisions also ultimately caused World War I to occur.
For instance, Wilhelm II s aims through use of foreign policies was to use Weltpolitik policies that
would make Germany have a place in the sun , and also known as a respected power during the course

Adams contended that it is riches or the absence of it which makes imbalance, particularly in America,
and in this way called Jefferson s promise for human fairness an unthinkable dream. Along these lines,
for Adams, the wellspring of the issue was not European feudalism, but instead human intuition.
Humorously, the slave populace of the South was an excellent illustration of feudalism, one in which
Jefferson joined in even as he assaulted the thought of feudalism. Jefferson denounced Adams for
tending to dam the dynamic legacy the region of republican respectability, a social event unrivaled by
their favorable circumstances as opposed to riches. Ellis takes note of that it was the Republican

Federalists blurred away. Another contentious topic of the correspondence was the French Revolution.
Adams blissfully specified the subject as approval for quite a bit of his outside approach, which
Jefferson had assaulted in the race of 1800. Jefferson apologized for undermining Adams

and drove Jefferson to the official office. Jefferson had apologized finally for his most ponder and

Clinical Outcomes And Outcomes Of Alzheimer s Disease...
The empirical paper, on which this critique is based on (Pagan et al., 2016), aimed to assess the safety,
pharmacokinetics, clinical outcomes and biomarkers of Nilotinib (a tyrosine kinase inhibitor) in
advanced Parkinson s disease (PD), Parkinson s disease with dementia (PDD) and dementia with
Lewy bodies (DLB). PD Subject selection was based on diagnosis of PD in accordance with the UK
Brain Bank Diagnostic Criteria. 12 subjects were assigned to either 150mg (n = 5) or 300mg (n = 7)
groups at random and were orally administered Nilotinib daily for 24 weeks with a 12 week follow up.

Figurative Language In The Scarlet Ibis
It was in the clove of seasons, summer was dead but autumn had not yet been born, that the ibis lit in
the bleeding tree (James Hurst, The Scarlet Ibis ). This line of figurative language from Hurst s short
story shows the setting and how summer is gone, but autumn has not started yet. In literature, authors
use figurative language to emphasize setting or to add to characterization. In The Scarlet Ibis , Doodle
is a six year old disabled boy who is unable to walk. Brother , the narrator, works hard to get Doodle
to be able to things that normal kids do, but the pride he has for himself does not want to deal with the
embarrassment of having a disabled brother. In The Scarlet Ibis author James Hurst uses figurative
language to establish the theme of how pride can blind oneself from the things that really matter.
The metaphors used in the short story reveal to the reader the insecurity the brother has within
himself. The brother works hard with Doodle to try to get him to walk, and once they succeed he feels
great confidence in himself. Doodle struggles to move great distances, so getting him to walk further
develops the brother pride. After he succeeds in getting Doodle to walk, he learns something new
about his relationship with Doodle as well as learning that pride is a wonderful, terrible thing, a seed
that bears two vines, life and death (5). The pride Brother has for himself causes him to push Doodle
to work harder to achieve the goal of walking. He tells himself he is doing this for Doodle, that he
wants Doodle to feel good about himself. However, the brother wants to feel good about himself by
developing a non disabled brother. While Doodle does start to walk, the reader sees how the brother
disregards Doodles feelings in the process. Like seeds, which are the start of any vegetable, plant or
flower, pride is the start of a life, or a vine, that can lead to one of two outcomes, one that leads to a
more self confident life, and another that causes pain and suffering in others. Through the use of
metaphors the author reveals the narrator s own insecurity and how it causes him to make decisions
for the wrong reasons.
Furthermore, Hurst s use of personification also adds to the theme, by revealing

Personalized Nutrition and Exercise Plan
Personalized Nutrition and Exercise Plan
University of Phoenix
Leading a nutritious and healthy lifestyle with the incorporation of exercise is the path I am currently
walking on and will continue to follow in my later years. Following the healthy eating plan I currently
put myself on is a step in the right direction and the many steps that will follow will be the guide to a
continuous nutritional lifestyle. I am currently living with relapsing remitting Multiple Sclerosis (MS).
MS is an autoimmune disease that causes demyelination. Demyelination occurs when there is loss of
the myelin sheath that insulates the cells in the central nervous system. (Gutierrez, 2009) When an
attack occurs unpredictably, it can last a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
(United States Department of Agriculture, 2009) Creating a diet to follow is easier planned than
followed. One has to follow successfully aself planned diet, especially when there is a drastic change
from unhealthy foods to healthy foods. Additionally, living in a home where others are not on a diet
can be challenging. Eating with the familywhen only one individual on a diet is a challenge to one s
will power. I can say for myself that my will power is average. Itis hard sometimes when my husband
is eating a steak dinner or fried spicy hot chicken, my favorite. I will give in at times. There were
situations where I completely gave in, but as I continue to educate myself, I have come to realize that
sometimes cheating is not worth because it eventually catches up to one s health in a not so good way.
My approach to avoid having to deal with giving into temptation is to eat before the rest of the family
doesor to eat before I leave work. That way I am not eating late nor will I be hungry by the time I
come home. Another challenge I may come across is if the Multiple Sclerosis becomes aggressivein
my later years where a work out regimen may not be an option. Therapy and medication would have
to be the option to handle the condition if it worsens. Depending on how bad the condition is, I may be
able to incorporate some kind of exercise whether it is just walking or picking up some weights. At
least there will be some kind of physical activity.

Eddie Aikau Research Paper
Being a native to Hawaii was a helpful push towards legendary status for Eddie Aikau. The act of
riding waves with a wooden type board originated in Western Polynesia over three thousand years ago
(The Origins of Surfing). The first Polynesian settlers to land in Hawaii were said to be skilled in
simple surfing, and after a few hundred years of riding waves in Hawaii, the well known Hawaiian
form of the sport emerged (The Origins of Surfing). Eddie Aikau propelled in surfing because of his
love for the ocean, his job as a lifeguard, and his first surfing competitions.
Eddie Aikau s love for the ocean shined through on a surfboard. Most people enjoy the ocean in the
summer months when the ocean is placid and family friendly but Eddie loved the ocean all year
around. (Pasulka). When it came to surfing, it was never a competition for Eddie. Surfing for Eddie
was a connection to the ocean and the ancestral roots that were found within each wave he rode
(Rolland). Surfing was symbolized as being one of the last traditional arts that the Hawaiian people
practiced, and when Eddie surfed, it was a revival for his people every time he was in the water
(Rolland). The ocean symbolized so much for Eddie Aikau and ... Show more content on

Eddie was such a skilled waterman that he was hired as the first lifeguard ever to work on the North
Shore. This job only improved his surfing skills because during his breaks and lunches, Eddie would
surf. He became more skillful and daring by having this kind of access to big waves every day
(Dubiel). Eddie never even had a high school diploma, but because he was such an extraordinary
surfer he was awarded the position (Dubiel). There was never a loss of life while Eddie was on duty
and he went on to save over find hundred lives in the course of his career there (Dubiel). Eddie was
honored by his fellow lifeguards in 1971 and was named Lifeguard of the Year

Why Is It Ok To Lie
People aged 18 to 29 were among the groups most likely to say lying was sometimes ok. Lying can
sometimes be ok when used for a good purpose. In article 1, It s the Truth: Americans Conflicted
about Lying , it states an obvious example is when you re lying to protect someone from serious harm.
This quote from Article 1 suggests that when someone is in need of help it is ok to lie. The quote also
makes you think of how lying can benefit someone other than yourself. As said in article 3, Brad
Blanton: Honestly tell the Truth , it states ...we shouldn t manipulate the truth except for rare times if
you re hiding Anne Frank in your attic because her life is in danger. Article 3 informs, or suggests, you
not to make lying a habit. It is important

The Role Of Resocialization In An Ember In The Ashes
Erving Goffman created the idea of a total institution and the degradation ceremony. This is something
that is often seen in societies to resocialize people. In the book An Ember in the Ashes, there will be
many examples of how the total institution and the process of resocialization work. Replacing one s
sense of self with something different, is an example of resocialization. This is done through the work
of a total institution. A total institution is, an institution that regulates all aspects of a person s life,
under a single authority... (Schaefer, 86) In the book An Ember in the Ashes, by Sabaa Tahir explains
what it s like to live in a total institution and what it does to your sense of self. Erving Goffman coined
the term total institution. (Schaefer, 86) There are also four rules of total institutions. The first rule is,
All aspects of life are conducted I the same place under the control of a single authority. An Ember in
the Ashes, takes place at an academy called Blackcliff, where students are trained to become killers
and the police of the nation. This all falls under the rule of the Commandant. This is the single
authority that Goffman explains must be essential to a total institution. We don t hear the Commandant
of Blackcliff Military Academy approach; we feel her, the way you feel a storm coming. (Tahir, 27)
This line shows how the Commandant is the leader and force to be reckon with at the academy. The
second aspect of a total institution is, any

The Theme of Violence in Cage Bird, Giving Blood, Sand...
This semester in American Literature I have read and analyzed various literary works. The reoccurring
theme throughout the works is violence. I have came to the conclusion that the significance of
violence throughout the various works is that the group or individual singled out throughout the works
is the victim of violence because the enemy has something to gain from the victim. The literary works,
Caged Bird, Giving Blood, Sand Creek, and An Episode of War demonstrate this.
For example, Caged Bird by Maya Angelou demonstrates how a personal struggle can become a form
of violence. Angelou, an African American has a troubled childhood and as a result of her parents
divorce she is sent to live with her grandmother at a young age. ... Show more content on

Historically there have been racial tensions between white s and Native Americans. This resulted in
massacres of Native American s. The violence reflected in this short story is the denial of the blood
donation of the man and the massacre of the Native Americans by white s. The massacre was a gain
for white s because it eliminated the Native American s who were seen as a threat to the white s way
of life.
Another example of discrimination resulting in violence is reflected in the poem Sand Creek, by
Simon Ortiz. The poem is told from the point of view of an Indian who reflects on the brutality of
Indian deaths by the Anglos. The poem is a historical reference to the Sand Creek massacre, which
occurred in 1864 when a US military militia massacred a group of Indians who presented themselves
as friendly near a fort. At the conclusion of the poem the author emphasizes that things will improve
stating that, There are flowers, and new grass, and a spring wind rising from Sand Creek (2). The
author also states that things will change for the people of Indian decent. The violence throughout the
poem is the Anglos massacring the Indians just because they could.
Finally, in An Episode of War, by Stephen Crane an army lieutenant experiences the reality of war first
hand. In the short story, an army lieutenant is

  • 2. European Colonialism, Imperialism, and Cultural... European Imperialism and Cultural Superiority Many factors contributed to the colonization of Africa by European powers between 1895 and 1905. Among these factors were the effects of European history, the growing capitalist economy, and the growing competition between European powers. Most important was the belief that European culture was superior to African culture. During the height of imperialism, the vast majority of the African continent was controlled by Europe (ìExtentî 19). Cecil Rhodes, a British advocate for imperialism, believed it would solve Englandís domestic economic problems (Lenin). People who were likely to gain wealth from colonization further pushed the movement (Schumpeter). The element of competition between European powers played a role in imperialism in Africa. When England was the only dominant economic power, imperialism was unnecessary (Hobson). When other nations began to gain power and become significant competition for each other, the argument developed that it was important to stop rivals from gaining the upper hand (Paton). Paton writes about the importance of keeping colonial gains for Britain (Paton). Symbolism In The Thief The Thief and the Stalinist Period As a movie depicting the Stalinist period, The Thief eloquently wrapped a historical and political portrayal in an emotional journey of Sanya, Katya, and Tolyan. Some important aspects of the movie that provide a strong nuance of the Stalinist era are the financial struggle among commoners, the positive attitude towards Stalin, and the paternalistic emphasis. Additionally, some indirect symbolism in the movie may portray the relationship between Stalin and Russians during the Stalinist period. Financial struggle was the emphasis early in the movie, portraying how difficult life could be during the Stalinist period. In the beginning of the movie, Katya gave birth to Sanya. Memory is a lot like a large array but rather than using the term index to indicate specific locations in memory; we use the term address . Each address stores one element at the level of the byte (Curran, 2006). Although some data types exceed 1 byte; they can be assigned to span more than a single byte to accommodate larger values. Within a byte the value is determined by checking the bits right to left. This means that the right most $#$#0$#$# can be o or 1 value and any bits towards the left indicate a higher value. There are two ways in which data can be stored in memory. Prisons shifted their focus from the punishment of offenders to the rehabilitation of offenders, then to the reentry into society, and back to incarceration. Some people may not have a psychological disorder that put them in prison and others may never recover from their illness. This program is a good idea if combined with other forms of punishment as well. The next big idea in the system of corrections was the idea of the community model. This model was created during the 1960s after movements such as the Civil Rights Movement, the war on poverty, and the resistance to the Vietnam war showed that social and political values have a major impact on the criminal justice system. The community model of corrections was based on the assumption that the criminal justice system should aim at reintegrating the offender into the community(Clear 56). This model of corrections focused on alternatives to incarceration such as probation or parole. Officials felt that prisons were to be avoided because they were artificial institutions that interfered with the offender s ability to develop a crime free lifestyle(Clear 56). Many thought that incarceration was a negative influence on criminals because it took away the skills needed to successfully become a part of society once released. His infancy spent in the workshop shapes his future obsession of studying Melquíades parchments, as he likely associates the workshop with safety and comfort, and naturally absorbs himself into every aspect of the room. The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) a government agency, affirms that depression is the most common form of mood disorder in the United States (NIHM, 2015). Depression involves a combination of genetic, biological, environmental, and psychological factors (NIMH, 2015). It affects work, family life and relationships. Although depression usually affects adults, children and adolescents experience depression and are most likely affected into adulthood. (Guttmann Sameroff, 2004). This paper will evaluate how conflicts between mother and daughter relationships directly affects depressive symptoms in adolescent girls. Finally, this paper examines the preventive and intervention strategies to help control depression in young females and increase the relationship between mother and daughter during adolescence years. Recent studies have shown that females are at a greater risk to experience depression than males (Daley Rao, 2000, Morris, McGrath, Goldman Rottenberg, 2014). • 20. The Carboxylate Group In Tamiflu Additional questions: 1. Why would removing the carboxylate groups result in the compound s activity being nullified? The carboxylate group in Tamiflu provides it with a strong ionic interaction with an arginine residue. This interaction will hold the drug molecule in place in the binding pocket of the enzyme, allowing it to elicit an effect. Removal of this group would result in the arginine Tamiflu interaction being removed, which would result in a poorer affinity for the binding pocket. The Tamiflu molecule will be far less likely to exhibit good binding and therefore the biological effect of the drug would be diminished. 2. After years of searching for that one special person, you have finally committed yourself to spend the rest of your days on earth growing with that one special someone. Unfortunately marriage isn t always so special. For some, it is a sentence to slavery. Today, one out of every three girls in the developing world is married before the age of eighteen with the largest concentration existing in Southwest Asia ( United Nations Population Fund ). The marrying of young boys and girls, even in cases where it is not forced, can lead to physical abuse and torture, health complications and the termination of any possible future educational endeavors ( International Center for Research on Women , 2006). For the nation of Pakistan, approximately 21 percent of young girls are married before the age of 18, and many of these marriages are forced ( Girls Not Brides ). Although this number is lower than the regional average, the forced marriage problem in Pakistan is highly concentrated in poorer areas, endangering those who are socioeconomically at risk. Furthermore, Pakistan ranks as the sixth most populated country in the world, exemplifying the devastating amount of young girls at risk for forced child marriage. Note that both girls and boys are affected by child marriage, but girls represent the overwhelming majority of those sold into marriage (Ahmad, 2014). Pakistan s Council of Islamic ... However, I consider that low income students have extra to offer as they have emerged from harsh situations that have nurtured hard work and encouraged their eagerness to succeed. My families financial situation is below the poverty line which is why I am pursuing a higher education and career. For months during high school, my family and I would receive our daily nutrients from soups and undergo months deprived of electricity and water. Yet, even after every hardship, I ve realized that it is because of the hardships that I am pursuing a career in law and that I ve grown to become a strong, independent woman. As I learn from my hardships, I can reassure you that providing an impoverished student like me with the opportunity to enroll in law school will become the biggest blessing to both my professional and educational development. Early on the summer of my freshman year, my mother, the sole provider of my family, lost her job to a work injury that left her in disability. • 28. Class Disparities In The Victorian Era While there were many advancements in technology and literature in the Victorian Era, there were also many disadvantages; these included child labor, class disparities, and atrocious living conditions. There were incredible novels, artwork, and machinery created during the Victorian Era. However, the people were treated horribly. Children were put to work, and severely abused while they were there. The poor were seen as dirt on the bottom of the upper class s shoes, and were rarely allowed to advance in society. Citizens lived in squalor, and many became ill because of it. There was also a group below the working class called the sunken class. They lived in poverty and struggled immensely in their daily lives. While the lower class people were working for a living, the rich were living glamorously. They had large houses, plots of land, and maids and butlers. Even with all of these amenities, the upper class paid no taxes. The citizens under the aristocrats paid nearly all of the taxes, even though they worked for pennies a day. This created hostility towards the upper class, and made the class disparity even more severe. In A Christmas Carol, by Charles Dickens, Ebenezer Scrooge was a wealthy, upper class man. He did not do anything to help the poor or the lower class society. Meanwhile, Bob Cratchit had a sizable family that lived in a cramped house, and struggled to make ends meet. Scrooge treated Bob Cratchit, his employee, poorly, and said multiple times that the poor should be able to work their way out of poverty. The main reason for the introduction of the open carry law was to reduce crime due to the threat a gun poses and how it will deter potential thieves, robbers and criminals from injuring an individual due to the presence of a gun. Thus, it is intended so that guns will make the civilians feel safe and create fear in the potential criminals. While open carry law states do have a 23% less crime rate than non open carry law states, there hasn t been any data suggesting that open carry law caused the decrease in crime, just that the crime in that specific state is lowered than the other ones (politifacts) . There is, however, information that the presence of a gun does cause trepidation within an individual. When someone is in possession of a gun, they tend to be more aggressive (Lurie, 2015). Also, due to the current occurrences in America, the general public also has instilled a psychological fear when they see guns. With American mass shooting incidents [rising] to 247 a year, it is no doubt that gun control has become an important topic to the public [washington post]. People have a similar imbedded fear similar to phobias to guns as they do for snakes and other natural predators (mother jones) . With the new open carry law being passed, there will be a larger public exposure to guns and other firearms. While these may be carried in holsters, they are open for all to see, whether criminal or innocent. In the short run, people will panic at the sight of these and feel as if their personal security is threatened, but with constant exposure to the firearm, the public will slowly become desensitized to guns (Csulb). Apply economic principles to analyse the impact of such policies on the countries that adopted them. Mercantilism was at its peak in Europe during the 17th and 18th century, this essay will look at the policies adopted by Britain, the Dutch republic and France and see how they affected their economies and industries as well as that of the other nations. Britain The British empire used various mercantile policies to attempt to increase the country s wealth, Britain mainly granted monopolies and privileges in order to restrict competition in sea trade. Tariffs Britain used tariffs on imports coming in from Dutch vessels, mainly against Dutch fish imports to develop the English fishing industry (Findlay and O Rourke, pg. 242, 2007). Britain used tariffs on the Dutch vessels in order to allow the fishing industry to grow in Britain whilst also allowing enough fish in to satisfy demand. As mercantilists saw the trade between nations as a zero sum game the British still saw this as a way it was reducing Dutch trade whilst also increasing their own. However, tariffs can be looked at in the economic sense of reducing overall welfare due to the tariff being introduced as it pushes the prices upwards. This tends to affect the economic welfare of consumers more than producers. Therefore, it could be argued that for the consumers in Britain this policy negatively affected them whilst ... • 39. Figurative Language In The Scarlet Ibis It was in the clove of seasons, summer was dead but autumn had not yet been born, that the ibis lit in the bleeding tree (James Hurst, The Scarlet Ibis ). This line of figurative language from Hurst s short story shows the setting and how summer is gone, but autumn has not started yet. In literature, authors use figurative language to emphasize setting or to add to characterization. In The Scarlet Ibis , Doodle is a six year old disabled boy who is unable to walk. Brother , the narrator, works hard to get Doodle to be able to things that normal kids do, but the pride he has for himself does not want to deal with the embarrassment of having a disabled brother. In The Scarlet Ibis author James Hurst uses figurative language to establish the theme of how pride can blind oneself from the things that really matter. The metaphors used in the short story reveal to the reader the insecurity the brother has within himself. The brother works hard with Doodle to try to get him to walk, and once they succeed he feels great confidence in himself. Doodle struggles to move great distances, so getting him to walk further develops the brother pride. After he succeeds in getting Doodle to walk, he learns something new about his relationship with Doodle as well as learning that pride is a wonderful, terrible thing, a seed that bears two vines, life and death (5). The pride Brother has for himself causes him to push Doodle to work harder to achieve the goal of walking. He tells himself he is doing this for Doodle, that he wants Doodle to feel good about himself. However, the brother wants to feel good about himself by developing a non disabled brother. While Doodle does start to walk, the reader sees how the brother disregards Doodles feelings in the process. Like seeds, which are the start of any vegetable, plant or flower, pride is the start of a life, or a vine, that can lead to one of two outcomes, one that leads to a more self confident life, and another that causes pain and suffering in others. Through the use of metaphors the author reveals the narrator s own insecurity and how it causes him to make decisions for the wrong reasons. I can say for myself that my will power is average. Itis hard sometimes when my husband is eating a steak dinner or fried spicy hot chicken, my favorite. I will give in at times. There were situations where I completely gave in, but as I continue to educate myself, I have come to realize that sometimes cheating is not worth because it eventually catches up to one s health in a not so good way. My approach to avoid having to deal with giving into temptation is to eat before the rest of the family doesor to eat before I leave work. That way I am not eating late nor will I be hungry by the time I come home. Another challenge I may come across is if the Multiple Sclerosis becomes aggressivein my later years where a work out regimen may not be an option. Therapy and medication would have to be the option to handle the condition if it worsens. Depending on how bad the condition is, I may be able to incorporate some kind of exercise whether it is just walking or picking up some weights. At least there will be some kind of physical activity. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The act of riding waves with a wooden type board originated in Western Polynesia over three thousand years ago (The Origins of Surfing). The first Polynesian settlers to land in Hawaii were said to be skilled in simple surfing, and after a few hundred years of riding waves in Hawaii, the well known Hawaiian form of the sport emerged (The Origins of Surfing). Eddie Aikau propelled in surfing because of his love for the ocean, his job as a lifeguard, and his first surfing competitions. Eddie Aikau s love for the ocean shined through on a surfboard. Most people enjoy the ocean in the summer months when the ocean is placid and family friendly but Eddie loved the ocean all year around. (Pasulka). When it came to surfing, it was never a competition for Eddie. Surfing for Eddie was a connection to the ocean and the ancestral roots that were found within each wave he rode (Rolland). • 43. The Role Of Resocialization In An Ember In The Ashes Erving Goffman created the idea of a total institution and the degradation ceremony. This is something that is often seen in societies to resocialize people. In the book An Ember in the Ashes, there will be many examples of how the total institution and the process of resocialization work. Replacing one s sense of self with something different, is an example of resocialization. This is done through the work of a total institution. A total institution is, an institution that regulates all aspects of a person s life, under a single authority... (Schaefer, 86) In the book An Ember in the Ashes, by Sabaa Tahir explains what it s like to live in a total institution and what it does to your sense of self. Erving Goffman coined the term total institution. (Schaefer, 86) There are also four rules of total institutions. The first rule is, All aspects of life are conducted I the same place under the control of a single authority. An Ember in the Ashes, takes place at an academy called Blackcliff, where students are trained to become killers and the police of the nation. This all falls under the rule of the Commandant. This is the single authority that Goffman explains must be essential to a total institution. We don t hear the Commandant of Blackcliff Military Academy approach; we feel her, the way you feel a storm coming. • 44. The Theme of Violence in Cage Bird, Giving Blood, Sand... This semester in American Literature I have read and analyzed various literary works. The reoccurring theme throughout the works is violence. I have came to the conclusion that the significance of violence throughout the various works is that the group or individual singled out throughout the works is the victim of violence because the enemy has something to gain from the victim. The literary works, Caged Bird, Giving Blood, Sand Creek, and An Episode of War demonstrate this. For example, Caged Bird by Maya Angelou demonstrates how a personal struggle can become a form of violence. Angelou, an African American has a troubled childhood and as a result of her parents divorce she is sent to live with her grandmother at a young age. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Historically there have been racial tensions between white s and Native Americans. This resulted in massacres of Native American s. The violence reflected in this short story is the denial of the blood donation of the man and the massacre of the Native Americans by white s. The massacre was a gain for white s because it eliminated the Native American s who were seen as a threat to the white s way of life. Another example of discrimination resulting in violence is reflected in the poem Sand Creek, by Simon Ortiz. The poem is told from the point of view of an Indian who reflects on the brutality of Indian deaths by the Anglos. The poem is a historical reference to the Sand Creek massacre, which occurred in 1864 when a US military militia massacred a group of Indians who presented themselves as friendly near a fort. At the conclusion of the poem the author emphasizes that things will improve stating that, There are flowers, and new grass, and a spring wind rising from Sand Creek (2). The author also states that things will change for the people of Indian decent. The violence throughout the poem is the Anglos massacring the Indians just because they could. Finally, in An Episode of War, by Stephen Crane an army lieutenant experiences the reality of war first hand. In the short story, an army lieutenant is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
