Animal Abuse And Animal Neglect
When one discusses the topic of animal abuse, normally domestics such as cats and dogs come to
one s mind. However, farm animals and livestock also suffer from animal abuse and neglect. In
many rural places of southeast Ohio, cases of animal neglect go unseen or ignored. Cows, pigs,
chickens, and other stock animals do not receive proper food, water, and vet care. However, the
community can change the lives of these animals for the better if they implement change.
Education and awareness need to be spread through the community and then through the action of
reporting it to the proper authorities, the animalswill get a better life. How would one describe
animal neglect? According to the Humane Society, Animal neglect situations... Show more content

Lastly, the consumers of the meat or products are affected by the animals if they were not in
perfect health. On the topic of healthy animals, Laura Childs, the author of The Joy of Keeping
Farm Animals describes, buying healthy animals, keeping their bedding clean, feeding quality
hay, providing clean water, and adhering to a veterinary approved vaccination schedule will lead
to healthy animals and then to healthy meat and healthy people (2010, p. 200). Imagine the
quality of meat that would come from an animal that does receive one or more of these
necessary components. Through education and awareness, animal neglect can become a past
memory for all farms. Stockmen, farmers, and everyone else are the cause of the neglect found
on farms. In their article that was published by the American Society of Animal Science, Stull
and Holcomb explain, owner ignorance, economic hardship, and lack of responsibility were the
highest ranked causes of neglect and cruelty cases (2014, p. 2348). This meaning that some
farmers chose to ignore the problems their animals are experiencing. Some can just not afford to
keep the proper care for their animals, economic hardship was ranked first for causes of neglect
(Hull and Holcomb, 2014, p. 2348). Intentional or not, there are no excuses for the abandonment of
animals and the community needs to act to stop it. Furthermore, how we as a society see farm
animals is another

Group Development in FIS, a Consulting Services Company...
FIS is a consulting services company that provides services worldwide; the company was involved
in an off shore project of designing training materials that required the formation of a project team,
team members were expected to work effectively together and integrate their work in a successful
manner that meets the teams goals and each member has to interact with the client in order to meet
its needs. Working in teams can sometimes be stressful which could affect negatively the progress

all the conflicts and to cooperate and share their resources and encourages them to communicate
with each other and to leave all cultural differences aside and focus on the goals of the team, also
this stage gives a credit to the team leader that helps to promote such a culture and to create
positive climate between the members. FIS did not reach the stage because they remained in

Dwight D. Eisenhower s Major Accomplishments
Dwight D. Eisenhower Dwight D. Eisenhower, a well known and loved president back in the

he sponsored and signed the Civil Rights Bill of 1957. This was the first bill since
reconstruction. Second he sponsored and signed the Federal Aid Highway Act of 1956. Third,
he balanced the budget, not just once, but up to three times. Fourth, he ended the Korean War,
which he got all Americans and the Chinese to at least be persuaded on what would happen if
they didn t. Finally, this is one of the most greatest accomplishments is that he kept the
American Peace Eisenhower was confronted with major Cold War crises every year he was in
office: Korea, Vietnam, Formosa, Suez, Hungary, Berlin, and the U 2. While more than once
America seemed on the brink of war and those around him clamored to drop the Bomb,
Eisenhower always kept a level head. He dealt calmly and rationally with each situation, always
finding a solution that avoided war without diminishing America s prestige. He is important
because he gave America days of peace in a level headed and peaceful type of meaningful ways.
He gave people the ability to know he is there to talk about it not just get and jump the gun to pull
the trigger. Eisenhower helped the American dream in many ways and saved the American people
without them knowing it. He also used his ways and his power to create a competition not a fund

Theme Of Indian Camp By Ernest Hemingway
Lions, Suicide, and War; Oh My! What do a lion, a suicide, and a war have in common?
Connected or not, these three factors can influence the character s behavior whether it be in or
out of a figurative sense. These three components are also very symbolic in Ernest Hemingway s
writing, more specifically in his short stories Indian Camp , The Short Happy Life of Francis
Macomber , as well as the interchapters from In Our Time. Ernest Hemingway s portrayal of
conflict creates a violent normality in some of his stories. This is shown by the character s response
to suicide, hunting, and war.

with good intentions, to help a woman give birth, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He could be referring to the wife s screaming during the birth, his pain from his accident, or some

from death and viewing something that could make him grow in a different direction, even
though neither were prepared for what they saw. The doctor made the body clearly visible to his
son with the light. The light could symbolize Nick s veil of innocence to be removed from his life
because he had just witnessed the birth of another human being, yet also the death of another. This
removal of his veil was very abrupt and no one intended for it to happen at that moment. The death
of the Indian husband came as a shock to the characters and even though it was unintended, it still
played a major part in the tone of the birth of the Indian baby.
Francis Macomber is a man of great wealth as well as a beautifully unfaithful wife, on a hunting

Essay on Biography of Sir Joseph Lister
The Father Of Modern Surgery The hospital environment has not always been a place of sterility
and extreme cleanliness that is associated with it so readily today. Prior to the work of Joseph
Lister, the hospital was a place to go to die, not to be cured. If an individual was able to survive
the pain and torture of surgery without anesthesia, a postoperative infection would most
certainly be their ultimate demise. Thanks to Joseph Lister, later known as Baron Lister, a
hospital is now a place of healing and cleanliness, not one of death and filth. Lister s Early Life:
Joseph Lister was born to Joseph Jackson Lister and Isabella Harris on April 5, 1827 in Upton,
England. Upton was a small village outside of the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Lister realized the importance of the work of his ancestors, but was appalled at the fact that
outdated material could be learned for hundreds of years. Lister was lucky to be entering
medical school in a time when many important changes were taking place. Medical students
were now allowed to dissect human bodies, previously thought to have been grounds for
execution and certainly morally apprehensible. The methods by which students learned were
also modernized, and the public view of surgeons was being changed. As late as the early to mid
1800 s surgeons were not considered worthy of the respect of physicians, and were not permitted
by law to practice medicine. As the technology surrounding surgery was enhanced, the surgeons
began to gain respect in their own right. The use of ether in surgery as an anesthetic allowed the
surgeons to concentrate more on detail and less on speed. Prior to ether, the surgeon s speed was
the only way to minimize the pain of the patient. Lister was a very sympathetic person, and strove
early in his career to change the previously accepted conceptions of surgery. When Lister began his
education surgery had a mortality rate of over 50%. This was accepted by society, but not by
Lister. He set out very early to change this problem. Joseph continued his education and questioned

However, Kesserwani strongly believes that Arabizi might have severe cultural and linguistic
consequences (Salhani, 2013). Education System and Language
The impact of Arab s over reliance on English based technology has affected many other critical
aspects of Arab society. As Warschauer explained throughout his book, university level courses that
are taught in English are expanding nowadays to further include other linguistic courses such as
Arabic. Consequently, parents are forced to register their children in English based schools so
they can afford a good job in the future and maintain a high status in society (2002). However, this
desire for upward social mobility has led to cultural linguistic dualism (Findlow, 2006). Therefore,
Arab youth can speak, interact and even live with a linguistic mixture of Arabic and English.
However, this phenomenon can lead us to recognize these dramatic concepts language death ,
language loss , language decay and even linguistic genocide , which convey the increasing concerns
about the future of the Arabic language (Findlow, 2006).
Education has a critical role to play in the discourse of how the Arabic language is rapidly
disappearing from new generations lives and heavily displaced by English. Schools nowadays in
the Middle East adopt English as the major language of teaching and as a consequence they are
teaching Arabic to Arab students as a foreign language:

The Buckminster Fullerene Is The Third Allotropic Form Of...
In general, the Buckminster Fullerene is the third allotropic form of Carbon, with the other two
being Graphite and Diamond. The more proper term used to describe these compounds in regards
to Carbon compounds would be Graphenes. (22)
The Buckminster Fullerene was first discovered in 1985 by scientists Harold Kroto, Rickard
Smalley and Robert Curl. (1) They were able to discover that when Graphite is vaporized by a
laser, a variety of large Carbon cluster compounds were formed, the C60 compound or Buckminster
Fullerene, being the most abundant. (1) The other Fullerenes found were C28 C32, C44 and C78.
The C60 compound was named after Buckminster Fuller, as he was responsible for the creation of
many geodesic domes, which resemble ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This involves setting up an arc between two graphite electrodes and using a stream of inert gas,
such as Helium. (1) This causes the Carbon to form vapors, which then condenses into the C60
Fullerene as well as additional types of Fullerenes. Source: S. Chuanchen, G. Haibin, F. Dufei,
Extraction of C60 cluster ion beam, Review of Scientific Instruments, 65, 1405 1407 (1994).
Due to the cage like structure formed during the synthesis of the Fullerene, the compound is able
to trap small molecules of the inert gas within the structure. The general formula used to represent
a gas enclosed within the structure of the Fullerene is nX@C60, where n is the number of
trapped atoms and X represents the trapped gas. (1) The interior diameter of the C60 compound
is 7.09Г…, which is large enough to trap a variety of the noble gases including Helium, Neon,
Argon, Krypton and Xenon. (##) In addition to trapping gases, the Fullerenes are also able to hold
metal ions within the structure. Since the C60 compounds have a high electron affinity, they can
readily accept electrons from alkali metals. The compounds that are formed from the enclosure of
metal ions are known as Endohedral Metallofullerenes. (1) Examples of alkali metals that can be
placed inside the C60 compound include Sodium, Potassium, Rubidium and Caesium. For the alkali
metals, the formula would resemble, M3C60. (1) The process of putting the alkali metals inside the

Peace Like A River Analysis
Peace Like River: The Importance of Faith in Life
Many Christians wear faith as a suit of armor protecting them from life s hardships. God guides
believers through loss, poverty, and sickness. The common phrase,
God doesn t give you more than you can handle expresses this idea. The knowledge that they are
not alone and have God s protection gives them strength and hope. Leif
Enger, the author of Peace Like A River, utilizes Reuben Land, the protagonist; to expose the
protection faith provides to Jeremiah Land, Reuben s father, compared to Reuben s brother, Davy
Land s uncertain faith leading to his demolished life.
The miracles Jeremiah Land experiences illustrates how his faith keeps him safe.
While in college Jeremiah is swept up in a tornado; ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the meadow, a symbol for the place between life and death, Jeremiah is finally able to take
Reuben s place. Reuben should have died and Jeremiah should have survived. By willing Reuben to
live, Jeremiah takes his son s place completing his earlier wish. It is symbolic that his father gave
him his life, as Jeremiah s first and last miracle was for Reuben to live. In Many ways, Reuben s
life comes full circle at the end of Peace Like A River.
Leif Enger shows the reader the importance of faith by displaying the different roles faith has in
Jeremiah s, Davy s, and Reuben s life. Jeremiah s faith was precious to him. His faith guided his
life through many hardships. When Davy struggled he felt alone because he didn t trust in God to
guide him. He replaced the role of faith in his life with faith in himself giving himself omnipotent
power to determine the fate of others. He believed so strongly in himself, one person, he exacted
justice on Tommy and Israel, taking away any possibility of their future. Reuben s perspective of
faith was shaped by how faith influenced his father and brother, primary figures in his life.
Jeremiah s and
Davy s opposite lives allowed Reuben to see faith as a protectant. Reuben wore faith as

Controversy Of Child Pornography
In the censorship arena, there are variety of controversial, hateful and inappropriate topics debated
for subjectivity. Yet, child pornography became the leading rationale for censorship and was
outlawed in 1982 by New York vs. Ferber (Mintcheva, p.167; Adler, p.228). Children are one of the
most exposed demographics in society because they don t have autonomy and are reliant on adults.
Thus, the child pornographylaw aimed to prevent sexual abuse and molestation. Amy Adler,
contributor to Censoring Culture, argues that child pornographylaw is self indulgent and further
exacerbates the problem by bringing it into the public eye (Adler, p. 229). She also cites taking
on the gaze of the pedophile as part of the problem. By stooping to the level of a sexual predator,
courts and policy makers are making the problem worse. In an arena like the arts, where nudity and
vulnerability are king, this controversy over what is pornography is especially delicate.
The famous photographer Sally Mann photographed her children while they grew up in rural
West Virginia. The images she made showed them lying naked in fields, skinny dipping, falling
down, and other every day interactions. Critics were shocked at these naked, uncensored familial
portraits and considered them to be child pornography. In New York vs. Ferber, a major tenant of
the child pornography law includes the lascivious exhibition of the genitals (Adler, p.230).
Especially in art, however, who is to say what the

Essay about The Gathering Text Response
Text Response Good Vs. Evil
Good vs. evil is a widely explored theme in Isobelle Carmody s novel The Gathering . It is most
evident in the battle between the Chain and the Kraken, however the more sinister, subtler acts of
evil occur when he attempts to make each member vulnerable by breaching their weaknesses.
While the physical examples such as the final battle, the murder of The Tod and the violent acts by
Buddha and his gang could certainly be classified as evil, it is my belief that the brainwashing of the
students and the fanatical powers of illusion Mr. Karle wields are more insidious, swiftly
inhabiting and manifesting in the minds of people in a way that is more powerful than any outright
acts of violence.
An example of how ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Another example of evil occurs on page 247, when Nathanial recalls his father trying to kill him
Children should be seen and not heard he said, and his big hand closed around my neck. And

Nathanial s blood. Perhaps this is why Mr. Karle struggles to convert Nathanial and attempts to
compel him to join The Gathering.
One instance pertaining to the theme of Good Vs Evil in the novel can be found on pages 224
and 225. This part of the novel includes a battle between Nissa and a feral dog; this is a physical
battle between good and evil. This excerpt from the novel shows that the Chain do in fact fight a
physical battle against the malicious forces of darkness contained in Cheshunt.
An additional case of Good Vs Evil is found on page 257 Kill them all! Kill them all! the Kraken
shrieked May the Chain prevail long! This excerpt from the final battle in the novel demonstrates
the fact that the Chain must not only fight a physical battle against the dark forces of Cheshunt.
They must also use their unity as a weapon against the darkness

Pop Culture And Technology Of The 1980s
The 1980s were the years of big change. Women became more independent and cared more about
their careers, music shaped the fashion industry, and computers altered the American lifestyle. The
go go eighties caused a substantial revolution in fashion, entertainment, and technology. To fully
understand how the 1980s shaped America, one must review the details of fashion, entertainment,
and technology of the go go eighties.
The fashion of the 1980s was influenced by the expansion of technology allowing celebrities
fashion to be shown across the world faster (1980s News, Events, popular Culture, and Prices).
According to the article, 1980s News, events, Popular Culture, and Prices, media such as television
shows and music videos enabled people to view what celebrities were wearing at a much quicker
pace rather than waiting for a magazine to come out. This caused individuals to easily go out to
the mall and acquire the newest trends (1980s News, Events, Popular Culture, and Prices). In the
article titled, 1980s News, Events, Popular Culture, and Prices, some of these trends included big
teased hair or spiral perms for women, mullets for men, oversized tops, ripped denim, and tight
exercise clothing; such as leg warmers and spandex. According to The 1980s: American Pop
Culture History , flamboyant make up, neon accessories; such as sunglasses, bangles and hoop
earrings were an essential part of the 1980s fashion as well. According to the article titled, 1980s

Critique of The Darling
For centuries, women have turned and have entrusted in men for advice to fulfill their lives with
romance. Some women, even though they had difficulty establishing a satisfactory bond with their
spouse, still had a tendency to have a dependency on the male spouse for identity. For a woman to
become a wifewas a defining role in women s lives back then, especially within the eastern
European cultures. Sadly, marriageis not always shown to be flowery and romantic as expected.

Reading Fluency and Its Effect on Reading Comprehension
Reading Fluency and its Effect on Reading Comprehension
Topic Selection As an elementary teacher, I have often thought reading fluency plays a large role
in a child s reading development. Few reading programs give fluency the recognition it deserves.
Reading fluency has been a prominent and reliable benchmark for me, even when students have
comprehension difficulties. Once fluency is assessed, the results were used to place students in
their reading ability group. Often times, the fluent readers were placed in the high ability reading
groups. In the past, our district used a reading program that gave very little focus to reading
fluency and few strategies for improvement. It assessed fluency based on rate and ... Show more

Reader s theater brings a new, more exciting approach to repeated practice. Like repeated reading,
reader s theater focuses on all three elements of reading fluency.
Reader s theater requires students to reread, memorize, and perform the text, which are key
components to improving fluency. Adding dramatic performance to a student s reading experience
will positively affect the student s expression, or prosody, a key component to reading fluency
(Nathan Stanovich, 2001). Modeling fluency is essential so students can better understand what
reading fluency sounds like. Proper modeling focuses on accuracy, rate, phrasing, and prosody
(Worthly Broaddus, 2001). Evanchan (2010) suggested proper modeling gives students exposure to
vocabulary above their independent reading level. Modeling allows students to be engaged with
text they may wrestle with independently, and comprehension is also enhanced (Worthly Broaddus,
2001). The student s engagement and evidence of comprehension suggests students listening
comprehension level is at a higher level than their independent reading levels (Evanchan, 2010).
How does reading fluency affect reading comprehension? There are five essential components to
reading. They are phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension.
Evanchan (2010), referred to the components as links in a chain, and comprehension is the link that
secures the chain; however, if one of the four

We are almost half way through the CELTA course and it is admirable that all of us have had such
a tremendous growth curve. Personally, I know I have become much more confident about standing
in front of a classroom full of students and talking about different aspects of English language. I
discovered the very first day that it was important to establish a good rapport with the students and
be comfortable talking with them. I learned it was also important to engage students in conversation

Biography Of Charles Married Sarah Sally s Father Of...
Charles married Sarah Sally Gwynne in April 1749. Sally s father, Marmaduke Gwynne, was a
friend of the Wesleys (Lloyd 89 90). John was not pleased about the engagement because he felt
that the bond he shared with Charles would be damaged as a result of the marriage. He was also
angered by the fact that Charles proposed to Sally without consulting him, breaking a promise
the two of them had made to discuss all marriage plans with each other before proceeding.
Despite his disfavor of the marriage, John did not hate Sally personally (Lloyd 93 94). Before
the marriage, Charles made her promise that the marriage would not keep him from traveling
and preaching the same amount that he did before the wedding (Tyson 167). Despite this
agreement, his itinerant ministry decreased greatly by his own choice (Lloyd 89). He wanted
Sally to accompany him on his travels, but her duties to the family and her pregnancies made
traveling difficult for her (Tyson 167). The couple had eight children, except only three survived
childhood: Charles, Sally, and Samuel (Tyson 168). Charles growing family caused him to not
acquiesce to as many of John s demands as he had before his wedding. This caused some strain
in the brothers relationship. The relationship was further damaged by the Grace Murray affair .
John was not a big supporter of marriage, and Charles agreed that John should not get married
because he was not suited for it (Lloyd 98). John meet Grace Murray but had to leave her. While

having difficulties independently participating in preschool activities due to his deficits in social

This ability to perceive, think about, understand, and interact with other people is known as social
cognition (Bennett, 1993). From a young age, children try to understand complex social situations
and eventually, anticipate and even control what the people around them do (Bennett, 1993).
Effective communication involves understanding and making inferences about others mental states
such as their knowledge, beliefs, intentions, desires, and emotions (Bennett, 1993). This
understanding of mental states is an aspect of social cognition known as Theory of Mind (Bennett,
1993). Theory of mind is important for social interaction in order to understand and predict the
actions and behaviors of the people around us (Martin McDonald, 2003). In past research, it has
been argued that children possess a theory of mind (Bennett, 1993). However, the questioning does
not stop here. The notion that children have theory of mind leads researchers to ask additional
questions such as: To what extent do children actually understand the mental states of others? When
do children begin to acquire this knowledge of mind and how does this knowledge develop?
Wellman (1990) and Perner (1991) both claim that infants do not possess theory of mind. Perner
(1991) argues that the social awareness, joint attention, and emotional awareness seen in 9 12
month olds does not require understanding of adults mental states,

The Elizabethan Era s Effect on Shakespeare s Works
If every playwright in Shakespeare s time aspired, as he did, to paint a portrait of an age in their

come and at the same time, one of the world s most baffling mysteries. Surely it is no coincidence
that the world s most celebrated dramatist would ve lived during the time when one of the world s

How much influence from the Elizabethan era was infused into Shakespeare s plays? Especially

An English student from Calvin College writes that, Several themes that are only Catholic also
can be incurred throughout his works. For example, Shakespeare, at times, used the word holy in
the sacramental sense that Catholics used it. Characters in his plays showed devotion to various
saints. They also blessed themselves with the sign of the cross. Shakespeare incorporated
references to Purgatory into some of his plots... [His] upbringing certainly came into play in his
familiarity of these subject. (Brydon). It is true that Shakespeare did have all of those references
and signs of Catholicism in his plays, it should also be remembered that what a playwright instills
in his characters does not necessarily reflect what he himself believes.
In any case, because the values and beliefs of the Protestant and Catholic religions were not
extremely different, it would have been easy for Shakespeare to cater to both without showing any
specific preference towards one or the other. Theologically speaking, they do have different
doctrines and leaders, but in the context of Shakespeare s plays, both religions have a God, Bible,
and other foundational values. His play, Measure for Measure, is based on the themes of morals and
justice. He sets his characters into contemplating some tough ethical issues, which could be applied
to both Protestantism and Catholicism.

As the years have passed Art has come to include expanding subgenres including architecture,

As they differ in terms of technique, function and intent, there are still few similarities that are
drawn between the two. Although one is subversive and the other is not, it is the one that is, that is
most in question.
A defining difference is that street art does not directly emerge from Hip Hop in contrast, graffiti
does. Graffiti is not only an art form it is highly recognized as a cultural movement that has
spread across the globe as a sub genre of Hip Hop (Blanchard. B, 1999) Street artists are
sometimes seen as middle class gallery artists that curate their work on the street whereas graffiti is
not. An example of this is a mural being painted outside a museum perhaps.
In contrast graffiti artists are more interested in presenting a statement in the spontaneity and
minimalism of their work. Graffiti artists are also seen as being more invested in the art on a more
personal level; by nature it rejects the concept of commissions. The culture of street art and graffiti
has been threatened by the blurring of the lines within art and has caused underlying discourses in
the public art community (Province of Western Cape: Provincial Gazette,

Essay on Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was probably the greatest genius in Western musical history. He was
born in Salzberg, Austria on January 27, 1756. The son of Leopold Mozart and his wife Anna
Maria Pertl. Leopold was a successful composer and violinist and assistant concertmaster at the
Salzberg court.
At the age of three, Wolfgang showed signs of remarkable musical talent. He learned to play the
harpsichord, a keyboard instrument related to the piano, at the age of four. Wolfgang began
composing minuets at the age of five. When he was only six years old, he and his older sister,

Several of his twenty two operas gained worldwide recognition soon after his death, and they
still please audiences all over the world. The Marriage of Figaro (1786) and Don Giovanni
(1787) are operas he composed with words in Italian. The Magic Flute (1791) has German words.
Each of these contains arias (beautiful melodies for singers), recitative (Rapidly sung dialogue),
ensembles in which several people sing at the same time, and choruses. The orchestra provides an
ever changing expressive accompaniment. The drama ranges from comedy to tragedy. Mozart wrote
over forty symphonies, many of which are performed today. Some originally were overtures
(orchestral introductions) for operas, and last only a few minutes. His later symphonies, which are
the most popular, are full length orchestral compositions that last twenty to thirty minutes. Most of
them consist of four sections. Mozart s last and most famous symphony, Number 41 (1788), is
nicknamed the Jupiter.
Mozart composed a great amount of church music, most of it for performance at the Salzburg
Cathedral. He wrote Masses and shorter pieces called motets; and he set psalms to music,
especially for the afternoon or evening service. The music is beautiful and varied. It includes
choral and solo parts, usually with accompaniment by organ and orchestra. Mozart s best known
sacred work is the Requiem (Mass for the Dead). He began it in the last year of his life and

The Importance Of Technology Literacy In Students Learning
Technology literacy plays a significant role in students learning. It is therefore crucial for educators
to incorporate learning lessons and techniques that will help students build and strengthen their
technology skills (McLaughlin, 2015). The literacy web tool that I am interested in exploring more
extensively is Diigo. Diigo is an annotation tool that encourages students to collect resources, gather
web pages, and add sticky notes and comments on their web pageprovided from the site (Diigo,
2017). Essential this site serves as a personal library where students can make notes and post
interesting and helpful sources all in one place (Diigo, 2017). Students will also have the
opportunity to share their web pages with classmates. What makes this site exciting is that students
can upload a PDF file right onto their web page and make notes directly on the document.
Therefore, students can opt to read science articles, take notes, highlight important information and
complete assignments right on their computer.
In today s education, students are expected to read and understand complex texts, read higher level
informational texts, expand their academic vocabulary and communicate their reading and learning
abilities through writing, to meet the Common Core Standards (Buehl, 2014). By using this

Winston Churchill And Odysseus Comparison
True Heroes: Odysseus and Winston Churchill
Heroes solve problems, deliver justice and give people a sense of hope when darkness looms.
Merriam Webster defines a hero as a mythological or legendary figure often of divine descent
endowed with great strength or ability (Merriam Webster). Exploring the nature and work of
Odysseus and Winston Churchill, both have the essential qualities that confirm they are heroes. By
comparing the values of intelligence, courage, and perseverance in Odysseus, the king of Ithaka in
ancient Greek mythology, and Winston Churchill, the leader of Great Britain during the Second
World War, the similar characteristics displayed reveal their heroic nature and bravery. Courageous,
noble qualities, leadership, bravery, physical and mental strength, intelligence, and risking one s life
are just a few characteristics that describe a hero. Odysseus heroic traits are demonstrated
throughout many different situations in The Odyssey. While on the Island of the Cyclopes,
Odysseus and his crew were nearly killed by the giant one eyed Cyclops, Polyphemus.
Intelligent Odysseus says, My name is Nohbdy: mother, father, and friends, everyone calls me
Nohbdy (The Odyssey 9.274 275). Odysseus cleverness to give a false name allowed him to hide
his identity as king of Ithaca and trick the neighboring Cyclops. Odysseus anticipated Polyphemus s

percent tell up to twenty people. In very simple terms, bad news spreads rather quickly. Don t

So when a sale is made, make it clear to the client that you welcome their input and that you would
be disappointed if a problem exists that you were unaware of. This permits the client to let you
know that they are experiencing a problem.
Fact Number Seven
In many service industries (yours included), quality of service is one of the few variables that can
distinguish a business from its competition. In the Scientific Apparatus Makers Association, your
members may be competing with dozens of other similar companies that make similar products. In
many cases, there s not a nickels worth of difference between the vast majority of products and
services that you and your competition offer.
The only appreciable difference is in the service rendered by the sales and service people. For
99.9% of your clients, the SALES AND SERVICE
PEOPLE are the company. Most of the time, they are the only people with whom the client will
ever be in contact.
Fact Number Eight
The first thirty seconds of a call or meeting sets the tone for the remainder of the contact. The last
30 seconds are critical to establishing last rapport. You only get one opportunity to make a first
impression...don t screw it up! If you want to be accepted as a professional, you must look and act

Protagonist In The Storm
What Makes a Protagonist A protagonist is a literary device used to develop a story: the story
revolves around the struggle of the protagonist who may undergo a change, usually at the climax
(Literary Devices). Using this definition, deciding the protagonist ought to be straightforward;
however, if the story follows many characters who undergo some change at the climax of the story,
then deciding who the protagonistis will be a bit more complicated. In the story Sweat, Delia can
easily be labelled as the protagonist: the story, for the most part, follows her life as she tries to
cope with a loveless marriage. She does undergo a change, twice in fact, when she decides not to
put up with her husband s abuse, anymore, and when she decides not to help him when he is bitten
by a rattlesnake. In The Storm, however, deciding the protagonist is a little more murky. The story
focuses on multiple characters and two of the characters undergo a struggle and a change. Calixta
and AlcГ©e can both effectively argued as the protagonist of their story, whereas AlcГ©e s struggle

Descriptive Essay On The Slaughter House
This is absolutely despicable, these are living breathing creatures.
I stared out from the dirty car window and I sat in my parked car across the road from the
slaughter house. Hundreds of cows milled aimlessly with glazed eyes, through dust clouds of
the overturned earth. I watched as several other cars pulled up behind mine, checking in my rear
view mirror to see a familiar face. Bianca in her little yellow bug looked so out of place on this
filthy dirt road. Today was going to be the day we put a stop to the slaughter. Bianca stepped out of
her car and I watched as she slowly walked towards the fence of the slaughter house. A man parked
further behind us called out something illegible but she took no heed.
Ok... this is it.
I jumped out of my little old truck, and sprinted across the road to the gate. Bianca had cut the
lock and stood back as I slammed the gate wide open. The cows stared with starved for attention
but overfed ,eyes in my direction. I ran through the tightly packed animals and shoved over the
nearest feeding trough , motioning to Bianca to come with me. She shook her head and backed
away, but held the gate open. I began to push the nearest bull and he bucked , starting a panic. The
animals raced towards the gate as Bianca pressed herself against it to avoid being trampled. My
laugh could be heard even over the frantic mooing of panicked animals.
Take this you inhumane bast****!
A shout echoed through the compound and I turned around quickly to see

Limitations of the Anchoring Effect
Anchoring Effect
Anchoring effect, also known as a relativity trap, is the tendency we have to compare and contrast
only a limited set of items. It is called the anchoring effect because we give disproportionate weight
to the first piece of information we receive. The initial impact of the first information, our
immediate reaction to it, is so significant that it outweighs everything else, drowning our ability to
evaluate a situation. (http://www.entendeo.com/decision_making_and_the_paradox_of_choice.php)
The classic example is an item at the store that is on sale. We tend to see and value the difference
in price, but not the overall price itself. This is why some restaurant menus feature very
expensive entrees, while also including more (apparently) reasonably priced ones. It is also why,
when given a choice, we tend to pick the middle option not too expensive, and not too cheap. http:/
/io9.com/5974468/the most common cognitive biases that prevent you from being rational4 You
depend on anchoring every day to predict the outcome of events, to estimate how much time
something will take or how much money something will cost. When you need to choose between
options, or estimate a value, you need footing to stand on. How much should you be paying for a
new refrigirator? How much should your water bill be each month? What is a good price for a
house in this neighborhood? You need an anchor from which to compare, and when someone is
trying to sell you something they are more

American Black Bears
D)Description of Life Cycle:
Ailuropoda melanoleuca (Giant Panda), Ursus maritimus (Polar Bear), and Ursus americanus
(American Black Bear) all have the same life cycle. Once a cub is born, they are extremely
small, blind, and consist of a little or no hair. Within a few months, the cub s eyes are open and
they begin to develop their natural hair colour as well as begin to crawl. At four to twenty four
months, the cub is able to run, hunt, and start eating solid food. Once a cub turns two years, they
become very independent. At this age, the cub will decide whether they want to stay with or leave
their mother. At age four to six, a cub becomes mature and is able to mate. Once two same species
of the opposite gender have sexual interactions, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These species are in serious danger of becoming extinct due to global warming. Biologist do not
know the exact number of polar bears worldwide as these species live in remote areas making it
difficult to monitor them. Based on available information, biologist were able to report that there
were about 22 600 to 32 000 polar bears alive in the world. This is the latest census that was taken
in 2012.
American Black Bears are classified as least concerned species. This means that these species
have an extremely large global population. The American black bear is the considered as the
world most common species in the Ursidae family. A census taken in 2011, reports that there were
about 800 000 American black bears in the world.
F)Range of Ecosystems:
Panda Bears mainly live in Central China in bamboo forests with coniferous and broadleaf trees
that are 5000 to 10000 feet tall. They enjoy spending their time in cool and wet areas. When
considering a place to live, Panda Bears look for two features; tall bamboo trees and a nearby
stream. Figure 4 shows a diagram of a Panda bear s habitat, bamboo forest.
Polar bears live in the Arctic near large portions of ice found in the Arctic Ocean. Due to global
warming, these species are forced to remain on coastlines or get stranded on small pieces of

Woman Hollering Creek By Sandra Cisneros
The book Woman Hollering Creek, by Sandra Cisneros highlights many examples of everyday
verbal mythology in the Hispanic culture, literacy and language as sites of conflict build up. The
violence in lack of translation, interpretation by translators, culture betrayal and existence of
encoded language only familiar to insiders are some of the issues that seems not to appeal to the
translators.
The sufferings and subordination of both the culture and language by the leading culture is
accompanied by other elements that erupt from unconscious of the book s author to make things
work for its conscious signification. The author says that [The poem is] Pretty in Spanish. But you
ll have to take my word for it. In English it just sounds goofy. (161). this clearly highlights the issue
of untranslatability of the discourse subordinated culture to the dominant languages. The
untranslatability of the Spanish language, the unpronounceability of Spanish and Amerindian name
and the invisibility of silencing of Chicanos are all figured out by Sandra. Spanish operates in the
text as a sign of insider status, specifically the bilingual Spanglish which, according to Castillo s
poet narrator, is spoken with an outrag accent splattered with Chicanismos, one could only assume
was done with some intention (54). The character, Cleofilas, calls the mixture Spanish pocked with
English, the metaphor, perhaps inadvertently, evoking disfigurement and disease (55).

Intertextuality In The Book Of Genesis And Don Quixote
Moreover, such is Quinn s degradation (not only physical but also mental) that the character does
not recognize himself when he sees his reflection in the glass of a shop window and he is
incapable of remembering him as he used to be few months ago because he has become a tramp:
he did not recognize the person he saw there as himself. He thought that he had spotted a stranger in
the mirror, and in that п¬Ѓrst moment he turned around sharply to see who it was (City of Glass,
pg. 132). Nevertheless and in spite of this fragmentation of Quinn s identity, it is not until the end of
the novel, when he realizes he has lost his apartment, his home, than he gives up any hopes of
recovering his original identity, of returning to the old Quinn and he ends up disintegrating, dying,
and in consequence, failing to solve Stillman s case. Furthermore, another aspect that is related to
the hard boiled formula is the disruption of the detective s private life, the... Show more content on

While reading it we find several references to other novels such as: Milton s Paradise Lost, the
Book of Genesis and Miguel de Cervante s Don Quixote. The author Paul Auster has introduced
these references or at least the first two to explain the idea of the language of God , the language
that was spoken by men before the fall of the Tower of Babel. Moreover, from my point of view,
Daniel Quinn could be compared with Don Quixote, whose real name is Alonso Quijano and who
is living under the pseudonym of Don Quixote; so in here we could find a similarity between these
two characters, who have more than one identity and who share the initials of their names DQ .
Furthermore, another similarity that could be found between them is that both of them have turned
crazy because of the books they have read, in the case of Don Quixote, or because of the books
they have written, in the case of Daniel

Art Personal Statement
Art has been an essential part of my life as long as I can remember. It started in preschool when
we were allowed to choose our free time activity and every day you d find me at the art table
surrounded by crayons, markers, scissors and glue. As I grew older, art classes slowly
disappeared from my day however art was still my passion. When I was in late elementary, my
mom went back to school and she got a minor in visual arts. That is when art started to become a
daily thing at home. I never knew that art could be a part of my daily life until then. I tried
different forms of art like drawing and painting but I started to write and learned how to play
several musical instruments. However, my desire to create just grew more and more. As I
entered middle school, I was bullied by several students in my school. Art suddenly became my
refuge and became a second home to myself. This is when I was able to start taking art classes
during the school day for part of the year. I tried things like indigo dyeing on silk scarves, stop
motion film and even a large scale papier mГўchГ© Pikachu. In 9th grade, I took Studio Arts. This
was a basic introductory art class but I loved the class and I was able to try certain mediums like

mediums. I have drawn, soldered, painted and molded but there are so many other mediums

final goal is to discover my own personal style. I ve done different styles like abstract and modern

Human Computer Interaction
2. Introduction Today, computerized mechanism and ICT (information and communication
technology) have a significant impact on human life process. What was on the top of the Maslow s
Hierarchy of Needs is now performing a vital role in each human life. Due to the swift growth in the
technology industry and hardware and software development computerized systems and machines
are used on an everyday basis by almost everyone, even people from different fields which are not
related to computing. Major sectors such as aviation, healthcare, banking and education adopted

USA , One of the most discussed issues in the early eighties, caused by poor interface design. It
could have been prevented if the control panel had been designed to provide required
information to the user (Preece.J, 1994). In 1990, Indian Airline 605, airbus 320 crashed and
killed 98 people. Later reported: it caused by poor understanding between machine and pilots
(Lee, 1992 in Preece.J, 1994). In July, 1998, Indian Ocean, Iran air flight 655 shot down by US
missiles, killing 290 passengers and cabin crew. Later investigators credited the incident to the poor
design of the Aegis (an onboard computer in the warship) user interface (McConnell.S in

the human factor research and the study of HCI principals must be carried out by designers in the
interface design processes to build a highly interactive system. In the future world, which is going
to be controlled by the robots and machines, poor interaction and interface design may cause more
disasters and uncontrollable situations to human beings. So the designers must study the human

My Book Retell I Have Chosen The Hobbit By J.k. R. Tolkien
For My book retell I have chosen The Hobbit, written by J.R.R. Tolkien. It takes place in the
fictional land of Middle Earth, where Elves and dwarves roamed the lands and much darker
creatures too, such as Trolls and Goblins. Our tale starts off like this. In a hole in the ground,
there lives a Hobbit . Hobbits are a simple folk who rarely wander beyond their little town of
Baggend. They are no taller than a human child, but they eat like giants. They love eating so much,
they have seven meals a day. Breakfast, second breakfast, elevenses, luncheon, afternoon tea, dinner
and supper. They have a mop of curly hair on there head and big furry feet. That brings us to the
main protagonist, Bilbo Baggins. Throughout the story he is accompanied by Thirteen dwarves,
lead by Thorin Oakenshield, and the wizard, Gandalf the Grey. There are many antagonists in this
story including goblins, trolls, elves, and even humans, but the main conflict is with Smaug, the fire
breathing dragon, who has stolen Thorin s kingdom.
Hobbits in Baggend rarely have anything close to an adventure, since they would have to leave
the comfort of their warm hobbit hole. Bilbo Baggins, never in his wildest dreams, would find
himself hunting dragons next to dwarves and wizards. However, one day, while he was smoking
his pipe of tobacco, he heard a knock on his gate. It was Gandalf. He wondered if Bilbo wanted to
take part in an adventure. Bilbo quickly urged the wizard away saying he wanted nothing to do

It s Time for a Universal Code of Ethics for Public Relations
Contemporary public relations is a twentieth century phenomenon that evolved from the press
gentry of the 1800s. These old time press agents played upon the credulity of the public in its
desire to be entertained, whether or not they were deceived. Advertisements and press releases were
often exaggerated to the point of being complete falsifications. In promoting an attraction, press
agents dropped multitudes of tickets on the newspaper editors desk along with the releases.
Voluminous publicityfor the attraction usually resulted, and reporters, editors, and their families
flocked to the free entertainment with scant regard for any ethical constraints (Wilcox, Ault, Agee...

Roots such as these have created the skepticism with which the public views the field of public
relations. Furthermore, it is the duty of practitioners to create positive images for businesses and
organizations. Therefore, other, more recent issues have augmented Americans mistrust in the
business world in general, including the Watergate Affair and the business and government related
scandals of the 1980s, such as the near collapse of the savings and loan industry. The American
public is demanding higher ethical practices from business firms and organizations than it did in the
past (Wilcox, Ault, Agee 116).
How Public Relations Practitioners are Perceived
Despite pressure from the public, very little empirical evidence on the ethics of public relations
practitioners exists. As recently as the spring of 1988, a Public Relations Society of America
(PRSA) task force could only uncover 16 journal articles and two books as initial readings that
dealt with ethics issues in length (Pratt, Empirical 230).
However, one study conducted in 1989, has revealed the pathetic state of ethics in, and has called
into question the credibility, professional integrity and public image of, public relations (229). In
the broad field of mass communications, of which public relations practitioners are considered a
part, the occupation is viewed with cynicism. For example, an investigation of journalists attitudes
toward public relations, conducted in

  • 3. Animal Abuse And Animal Neglect When one discusses the topic of animal abuse, normally domestics such as cats and dogs come to one s mind. However, farm animals and livestock also suffer from animal abuse and neglect. In many rural places of southeast Ohio, cases of animal neglect go unseen or ignored. Cows, pigs, chickens, and other stock animals do not receive proper food, water, and vet care. However, the community can change the lives of these animals for the better if they implement change. Education and awareness need to be spread through the community and then through the action of reporting it to the proper authorities, the animalswill get a better life. How would one describe animal neglect? According to the Humane Society, Animal neglect situations... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Lastly, the consumers of the meat or products are affected by the animals if they were not in perfect health. On the topic of healthy animals, Laura Childs, the author of The Joy of Keeping Farm Animals describes, buying healthy animals, keeping their bedding clean, feeding quality hay, providing clean water, and adhering to a veterinary approved vaccination schedule will lead to healthy animals and then to healthy meat and healthy people (2010, p. 200). Imagine the quality of meat that would come from an animal that does receive one or more of these necessary components. Through education and awareness, animal neglect can become a past memory for all farms. Stockmen, farmers, and everyone else are the cause of the neglect found on farms. In their article that was published by the American Society of Animal Science, Stull and Holcomb explain, owner ignorance, economic hardship, and lack of responsibility were the highest ranked causes of neglect and cruelty cases (2014, p. 2348). This meaning that some farmers chose to ignore the problems their animals are experiencing. Some can just not afford to keep the proper care for their animals, economic hardship was ranked first for causes of neglect (Hull and Holcomb, 2014, p. 2348). Intentional or not, there are no excuses for the abandonment of animals and the community needs to act to stop it. Furthermore, how we as a society see farm animals is another ... • 8. Theme Of Indian Camp By Ernest Hemingway Lions, Suicide, and War; Oh My! What do a lion, a suicide, and a war have in common? Connected or not, these three factors can influence the character s behavior whether it be in or out of a figurative sense. These three components are also very symbolic in Ernest Hemingway s writing, more specifically in his short stories Indian Camp , The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber , as well as the interchapters from In Our Time. Ernest Hemingway s portrayal of conflict creates a violent normality in some of his stories. This is shown by the character s response to suicide, hunting, and war. The doctor made the body clearly visible to his son with the light. The light could symbolize Nick s veil of innocence to be removed from his life because he had just witnessed the birth of another human being, yet also the death of another. This removal of his veil was very abrupt and no one intended for it to happen at that moment. The death of the Indian husband came as a shock to the characters and even though it was unintended, it still played a major part in the tone of the birth of the Indian baby. • 9. Essay on Biography of Sir Joseph Lister The Father Of Modern Surgery The hospital environment has not always been a place of sterility and extreme cleanliness that is associated with it so readily today. Prior to the work of Joseph Lister, the hospital was a place to go to die, not to be cured. If an individual was able to survive the pain and torture of surgery without anesthesia, a postoperative infection would most certainly be their ultimate demise. Thanks to Joseph Lister, later known as Baron Lister, a hospital is now a place of healing and cleanliness, not one of death and filth. Lister s Early Life: Joseph Lister was born to Joseph Jackson Lister and Isabella Harris on April 5, 1827 in Upton, England. Upton was a small village outside of the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Lister realized the importance of the work of his ancestors, but was appalled at the fact that outdated material could be learned for hundreds of years. Lister was lucky to be entering medical school in a time when many important changes were taking place. Medical students were now allowed to dissect human bodies, previously thought to have been grounds for execution and certainly morally apprehensible. The methods by which students learned were also modernized, and the public view of surgeons was being changed. As late as the early to mid 1800 s surgeons were not considered worthy of the respect of physicians, and were not permitted by law to practice medicine. As the technology surrounding surgery was enhanced, the surgeons began to gain respect in their own right. The use of ether in surgery as an anesthetic allowed the surgeons to concentrate more on detail and less on speed. Prior to ether, the surgeon s speed was the only way to minimize the pain of the patient. Lister was a very sympathetic person, and strove early in his career to change the previously accepted conceptions of surgery. When Lister began his education surgery had a mortality rate of over 50%. This was accepted by society, but not by Lister. He set out very early to change this problem. Joseph continued his education and questioned ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Introduction: Whenever you walk at the campus of the American University of Sharjah, you will definitely find the young Arab girls wear trendy Western dresses as well as the Arab boys wear stylish Western clothes. However, Kesserwani strongly believes that Arabizi might have severe cultural and linguistic consequences (Salhani, 2013). Education System and Language The impact of Arab s over reliance on English based technology has affected many other critical aspects of Arab society. As Warschauer explained throughout his book, university level courses that are taught in English are expanding nowadays to further include other linguistic courses such as Arabic. Consequently, parents are forced to register their children in English based schools so they can afford a good job in the future and maintain a high status in society (2002). However, this desire for upward social mobility has led to cultural linguistic dualism (Findlow, 2006). Therefore, Arab youth can speak, interact and even live with a linguistic mixture of Arabic and English. However, this phenomenon can lead us to recognize these dramatic concepts language death , language loss , language decay and even linguistic genocide , which convey the increasing concerns about the future of the Arabic language (Findlow, 2006). Education has a critical role to play in the discourse of how the Arabic language is rapidly disappearing from new generations lives and heavily displaced by English. Schools nowadays in the Middle East adopt English as the major language of teaching and as a consequence they are teaching Arabic to Arab students as a foreign language:

The more proper term used to describe these compounds in regards to Carbon compounds would be Graphenes. (22) The Buckminster Fullerene was first discovered in 1985 by scientists Harold Kroto, Rickard Smalley and Robert Curl. (1) They were able to discover that when Graphite is vaporized by a laser, a variety of large Carbon cluster compounds were formed, the C60 compound or Buckminster Fullerene, being the most abundant. (1) The other Fullerenes found were C28 C32, C44 and C78. The C60 compound was named after Buckminster Fuller, as he was responsible for the creation of many geodesic domes, which resemble ... Dufei, Extraction of C60 cluster ion beam, Review of Scientific Instruments, 65, 1405 1407 (1994). Due to the cage like structure formed during the synthesis of the Fullerene, the compound is able to trap small molecules of the inert gas within the structure. The general formula used to represent a gas enclosed within the structure of the Fullerene is nX@C60, where n is the number of trapped atoms and X represents the trapped gas. (1) The interior diameter of the C60 compound is 7.09Г…, which is large enough to trap a variety of the noble gases including Helium, Neon, Argon, Krypton and Xenon. (##) In addition to trapping gases, the Fullerenes are also able to hold metal ions within the structure. Since the C60 compounds have a high electron affinity, they can readily accept electrons from alkali metals. The compounds that are formed from the enclosure of metal ions are known as Endohedral Metallofullerenes. Leif Enger shows the reader the importance of faith by displaying the different roles faith has in Jeremiah s, Davy s, and Reuben s life. Jeremiah s faith was precious to him. His faith guided his life through many hardships. When Davy struggled he felt alone because he didn t trust in God to guide him. He replaced the role of faith in his life with faith in himself giving himself omnipotent power to determine the fate of others. He believed so strongly in himself, one person, he exacted justice on Tommy and Israel, taking away any possibility of their future. Reuben s perspective of faith was shaped by how faith influenced his father and brother, primary figures in his life. Jeremiah s and Davy s opposite lives allowed Reuben to see faith as a protectant. • 15. Controversy Of Child Pornography In the censorship arena, there are variety of controversial, hateful and inappropriate topics debated for subjectivity. Yet, child pornography became the leading rationale for censorship and was outlawed in 1982 by New York vs. Ferber (Mintcheva, p.167; Adler, p.228). Children are one of the most exposed demographics in society because they don t have autonomy and are reliant on adults. Thus, the child pornographylaw aimed to prevent sexual abuse and molestation. Amy Adler, contributor to Censoring Culture, argues that child pornographylaw is self indulgent and further exacerbates the problem by bringing it into the public eye (Adler, p. 229). She also cites taking on the gaze of the pedophile as part of the problem. By stooping to the level of a sexual predator, courts and policy makers are making the problem worse. In an arena like the arts, where nudity and vulnerability are king, this controversy over what is pornography is especially delicate. The famous photographer Sally Mann photographed her children while they grew up in rural West Virginia. The images she made showed them lying naked in fields, skinny dipping, falling down, and other every day interactions. Critics were shocked at these naked, uncensored familial portraits and considered them to be child pornography. In New York vs. Ferber, a major tenant of the child pornography law includes the lascivious exhibition of the genitals (Adler, p.230). Especially in art, however, who is to say what the ... It is most evident in the battle between the Chain and the Kraken, however the more sinister, subtler acts of evil occur when he attempts to make each member vulnerable by breaching their weaknesses. While the physical examples such as the final battle, the murder of The Tod and the violent acts by Buddha and his gang could certainly be classified as evil, it is my belief that the brainwashing of the students and the fanatical powers of illusion Mr. Karle wields are more insidious, swiftly inhabiting and manifesting in the minds of people in a way that is more powerful than any outright acts of violence. Once fluency is assessed, the results were used to place students in their reading ability group. Often times, the fluent readers were placed in the high ability reading groups. Adding dramatic performance to a student s reading experience will positively affect the student s expression, or prosody, a key component to reading fluency (Nathan Stanovich, 2001). Modeling fluency is essential so students can better understand what reading fluency sounds like. Proper modeling focuses on accuracy, rate, phrasing, and prosody (Worthly Broaddus, 2001). He was also angered by the fact that Charles proposed to Sally without consulting him, breaking a promise the two of them had made to discuss all marriage plans with each other before proceeding. Despite his disfavor of the marriage, John did not hate Sally personally (Lloyd 93 94). This ability to perceive, think about, understand, and interact with other people is known as social cognition (Bennett, 1993). From a young age, children try to understand complex social situations and eventually, anticipate and even control what the people around them do (Bennett, 1993). Effective communication involves understanding and making inferences about others mental states such as their knowledge, beliefs, intentions, desires, and emotions (Bennett, 1993). This understanding of mental states is an aspect of social cognition known as Theory of Mind (Bennett, 1993). Theory of mind is important for social interaction in order to understand and predict the actions and behaviors of the people around us (Martin McDonald, 2003). In past research, it has been argued that children possess a theory of mind (Bennett, 1993). However, the questioning does not stop here. The notion that children have theory of mind leads researchers to ask additional questions such as: To what extent do children actually understand the mental states of others? When do children begin to acquire this knowledge of mind and how does this knowledge develop? Wellman (1990) and Perner (1991) both claim that infants do not possess theory of mind. Protagonist In The Storm What Makes a Protagonist A protagonist is a literary device used to develop a story: the story revolves around the struggle of the protagonist who may undergo a change, usually at the climax (Literary Devices). Using this definition, deciding the protagonist ought to be straightforward; however, if the story follows many characters who undergo some change at the climax of the story, then deciding who the protagonistis will be a bit more complicated. In the story Sweat, Delia can easily be labelled as the protagonist: the story, for the most part, follows her life as she tries to cope with a loveless marriage. She does undergo a change, twice in fact, when she decides not to put up with her husband s abuse, anymore, and when she decides not to help him when he is bitten by a rattlesnake. In The Storm, however, deciding the protagonist is a little more murky. The story focuses on multiple characters and two of the characters undergo a struggle and a change. I stared out from the dirty car window and I sat in my parked car across the road from the slaughter house. Hundreds of cows milled aimlessly with glazed eyes, through dust clouds of the overturned earth. I watched as several other cars pulled up behind mine, checking in my rear view mirror to see a familiar face. Bianca in her little yellow bug looked so out of place on this filthy dirt road. Bianca had cut the lock and stood back as I slammed the gate wide open. The cows stared with starved for attention but overfed ,eyes in my direction. I ran through the tightly packed animals and shoved over the nearest feeding trough , motioning to Bianca to come with me. She shook her head and backed away, but held the gate open. It is called the anchoring effect because we give disproportionate weight to the first piece of information we receive. The initial impact of the first information, our immediate reaction to it, is so significant that it outweighs everything else, drowning our ability to evaluate a situation. (http://www.entendeo.com/decision_making_and_the_paradox_of_choice.php) The classic example is an item at the store that is on sale. We tend to see and value the difference in price, but not the overall price itself. It takes place in the fictional land of Middle Earth, where Elves and dwarves roamed the lands and much darker creatures too, such as Trolls and Goblins. Our tale starts off like this. In a hole in the ground, there lives a Hobbit . Hobbits are a simple folk who rarely wander beyond their little town of Baggend. They are no taller than a human child, but they eat like giants. They love eating so much, they have seven meals a day. Breakfast, second breakfast, elevenses, luncheon, afternoon tea, dinner and supper. They have a mop of curly hair on there head and big furry feet. That brings us to the main protagonist, Bilbo Baggins. Throughout the story he is accompanied by Thirteen dwarves, lead by Thorin Oakenshield, and the wizard, Gandalf the Grey. There are many antagonists in this story including goblins, trolls, elves, and even humans, but the main conflict is with Smaug, the fire breathing dragon, who has stolen Thorin s kingdom. Hobbits in Baggend rarely have anything close to an adventure, since they would have to leave the comfort of their warm hobbit hole. Bilbo Baggins, never in his wildest dreams, would find himself hunting dragons next to dwarves and wizards. However, one day, while he was smoking his pipe of tobacco, he heard a knock on his gate.
