Setting up the Equipment
Before the photoshoot I have checked that I have enough memory on
my mobile phone to take enough photos during the photoshoot which
was 2GB of storage. This is enough for hundreds of photos. I chose to
use the iPhone 4s as the camera is very easy and simple to take high
quality photos and I can easily assess them when I am moving around
as my phone is always on me, so is very portable. I can also either
email the photos I have taken or save them onto my computer.
I have also checked that the camera on the phone is working by taking
some test photos. This ensured that the camera was ready for the
photoshoot otherwise I would have to organise another day for it.
Also as I was going to take pictures for the front cover outside, I had to
check that it wasn’t raining as it could ruin my equipment. So I had a
coat and umbrella on me.
Pre-production material
I have followed the majority of the guidelines
set out for Unit 14 – LO1. I have only made
changes to one which was the hand drawn
drafts where I added colour to them to make
them more interesting and improved grammar
throughout my work. Apart from that I made no
changes after I had completed the corrections.
Test Photography
These pictures are from the test photography, I took lots of pictures of john to
make sure that I got the best photo for my magazine. This is why john is in
many different positions.
Production process
• Editorial and budgetary decision – At the start of production the main managers will
decide what is going to be included in the magazine. This will also include planning their
budget for the issue and what articles will be included.
• Managing the schedule – All the manager in all the departments will organise when
deadline’s are going to be met and what the content of the magazine is going to be.
They will also include reserve articles if they decide not to use some. The structure of
the future issue of the magazine will also be planned.
• Content Acquisition – After all the articles are written they will be placed in the
magazine. Then they will be made presentable and organised best so look professional.
• Sub-editing – This is when the magazine is read through and is made sure everything is
correct with no errors inside it. For my own magazine I had already written up what I
was going to put into my double page spread article. I had written it in Microsoft Word
documents where it showed me incorrect spelling mistakes. Although, I did read
through it to make sure that the punctuation was good and the article made sense.
• Page Layout – The content is then laid out including pictures
• Proof reading – This is the final check that everything is prefect and there are no
mistakes and the director is happy with the whole magazine.
• File emailed – The chief editor will have a final look at the magazine and make sure it is
ready to be mass produced.
• Distribution – The magazine will then be sent to distributors to sell on the shelves to be
sold on the Monday of the 4th week in the month.

Evidence of proof reading
This show after proof reading the interview on the double page spread the corrections
which I needed to change as there were spelling and grammar mistakes. On the left
was the 1st draft and on the right were the changes made.

Operating Desktop publishing tools
• Step 1:
• I first of all opened adobe Photoshop CS5.1.
• I then selected file, new.
• I changed the Width and Height to the correct
size for my magazine and then click ok.
• Step 2:
• I was then presented with a blank
front cover for my magazine.
• As I wanted a shaded back ground I
used the gradient tool to make a
shaded background.
• I used the tool by dragging it across the
page as shown on the right.
This is the blank page.
This is the gradient tool.
• Here is what the gradient tool looks like when
first used. I will now change the colour to
what I have decided in my proposal.
• I will now change the colour
by using the colour picker.
As shown below.
• I have used the colour picker tool to get the
colours which is on the my mood board.
• Next, I will add the image of john
but I will need to edit the photo to
remove the existing background.
I have used the quick selection tool to
remove the back ground.
• As the quick selection tool wasn’t able to
remove the whole of the background near
johns hair I had to use the Advanced hair
selections tool. I had to gain select the whole
of johns body and create a mask.
• I had to mask the edge and create
a smart radius. This gave his hair a
lot more detail as seen on the black
and white contrast.
• I then used the rubber tool to get
rid of the bumps on his hair and
body to make him look smoother
with less jagged edges. I then
place him onto the blank canvas.
• Now I decided to add the JUMP
Masthead behind johns head. I
simply used the text tool and
typed ‘JUMP’.
• I then changed the layer styles by
double clicking on the
‘JUMP’ layer.
• First, I changed the drop shadow to an opacity
of 44% and put it on a angle of 151°. Then, I
changed the stroke of the text to the same
colour purple on my canvas. The size is 50
pixels and opacity at 62%.
• Then, I used the text tool again to make the
‘John Allen’ headline. The styles I used her
were slightly different. I first changed the text
colour to the same as my canvas. Then I added
a opacity of 86%, with a spread of 14% and
size of 43 pixels.
• Then I added the strapline which was just
using the text tool and I put a purple box
behind it which was a colour from the canvas.
I also used the rectangle tool for the box
behind it.
• Then I made the barcode. In the
bottom right corner I have made a
white box which will fit the, barcode,
‘JUMP’, location, price, date of the
issue, website, publisher, social media
logos. These were all individually
added via photos or just text.
• I then added the individual cover
stories with simple boxes and text. I
changed the font by making some
words bold, changing the distance
between each letter and adding a
stroke outline to the words.
Creating the Double Page spread
First of all I had to create a new canvas with the
size shown on the screen shot.
Below is what it looks like with a
blank canvas. Now with using the
ruler tool I was able to find the
middle of the page a put a
temporary line there using the
line tool.
I then inserted the image of john which I wanted
to take up one half of the page. I had already
edited him like I did for the front cover with
using the advanced hair selection and I changed
his skin by using the burn tool which made his
skin darker and less pale and I included an
audience behind him
like he was a DJ.
I put 4 lines onto the page as seen in
the screen shot. I used this as a basis
of where my columns would go. I also
knew that I wanted quote from the
interview to go into the middle of the
interview.
I then used the pen tool to make sure
the text from the interview which I
was about to insert wasn’t going to
go over where I wanted the pull
quote. So I used the pen tool to map
out where the text could only go. The
screen shot shows the text inside an
invisible areas that I mapped out
using the pen tool.
This what it looked like after I had inserted all of
the interview while using the pen tool. As seen
in the screen shot there is a space left in the
middle for my pull quote. As you can see, the
second screen shot shows the pull quote. I also
changed the colour of the quotation marks to
pink to make the house styles consistent.
I then added a drop capital (the initial) to the
start of the interview.
I also put another pull out onto
the double page spread, I made
the quotation marks pink again
and the text white so that it
stands out from the background.
Then I put my magazines website
at the bottom of the article. I used the
hyperspace font for the website name. I also
added the issue date and page number.
I added the sub-heading to the page
and the heading of the page. I got
inspiration from mixmag magazine for
the title as they too have long titles.
I added who the interviewer and the
photographer was, to fill in the blank
space and make the magazine look
more professional by giving credit to all
of those involved.
I then added coloured shapes to make
the interview more colourful. I also got
inspiration from mixmag magazine to
add these.
LO3 - Conclusion
Learning Outcome 3 was the beginning of
creating the magazine’s content where the
photos, flat plan and the front cover & double
page spreads are created in Photoshop in their
finished form. The final learning outcome will be
the final stages of the magazines production
after the magazine has been completed.

Unit 14 - LO3

  • 1.
  • 2. Content • Setting up the Equipment – Slide 3 • Pre-production material – Slide 4 • Test Photography – Slide 5 • Production process – Slide 6 • Evidence of proof reading – Slide 7 • Flat Plan – Slide 8-9 • Operating Desktop publishing tools – Slide 10 – 26 • LO3 Conclusion – Slide 27
  • 3. Setting up the Equipment Before the photoshoot I have checked that I have enough memory on my mobile phone to take enough photos during the photoshoot which was 2GB of storage. This is enough for hundreds of photos. I chose to use the iPhone 4s as the camera is very easy and simple to take high quality photos and I can easily assess them when I am moving around as my phone is always on me, so is very portable. I can also either email the photos I have taken or save them onto my computer. I have also checked that the camera on the phone is working by taking some test photos. This ensured that the camera was ready for the photoshoot otherwise I would have to organise another day for it. Also as I was going to take pictures for the front cover outside, I had to check that it wasn’t raining as it could ruin my equipment. So I had a coat and umbrella on me.
  • 4. Pre-production material I have followed the majority of the guidelines set out for Unit 14 – LO1. I have only made changes to one which was the hand drawn drafts where I added colour to them to make them more interesting and improved grammar throughout my work. Apart from that I made no changes after I had completed the corrections.
  • 5. Test Photography These pictures are from the test photography, I took lots of pictures of john to make sure that I got the best photo for my magazine. This is why john is in many different positions.
  • 6. Production process • Editorial and budgetary decision – At the start of production the main managers will decide what is going to be included in the magazine. This will also include planning their budget for the issue and what articles will be included. • Managing the schedule – All the manager in all the departments will organise when deadline’s are going to be met and what the content of the magazine is going to be. They will also include reserve articles if they decide not to use some. The structure of the future issue of the magazine will also be planned. • Content Acquisition – After all the articles are written they will be placed in the magazine. Then they will be made presentable and organised best so look professional. • Sub-editing – This is when the magazine is read through and is made sure everything is correct with no errors inside it. For my own magazine I had already written up what I was going to put into my double page spread article. I had written it in Microsoft Word documents where it showed me incorrect spelling mistakes. Although, I did read through it to make sure that the punctuation was good and the article made sense. • Page Layout – The content is then laid out including pictures • Proof reading – This is the final check that everything is prefect and there are no mistakes and the director is happy with the whole magazine. • File emailed – The chief editor will have a final look at the magazine and make sure it is ready to be mass produced. • Distribution – The magazine will then be sent to distributors to sell on the shelves to be sold on the Monday of the 4th week in the month. http://contentmarketinginstitute.com/2011/08/6-steps-for-producing-a-custom-magazine/
  • 7. Evidence of proof reading This show after proof reading the interview on the double page spread the corrections which I needed to change as there were spelling and grammar mistakes. On the left was the 1st draft and on the right were the changes made.

  • 10. Operating Desktop publishing tools • Step 1: • I first of all opened adobe Photoshop CS5.1. • I then selected file, new. • I changed the Width and Height to the correct size for my magazine and then click ok.
  • 11. • Step 2: • I was then presented with a blank front cover for my magazine. • As I wanted a shaded back ground I used the gradient tool to make a shaded background. • I used the tool by dragging it across the page as shown on the right. This is the blank page. This is the gradient tool.
  • 12. • Here is what the gradient tool looks like when first used. I will now change the colour to what I have decided in my proposal. • I will now change the colour by using the colour picker. As shown below.
  • 13. • I have used the colour picker tool to get the colours which is on the my mood board. • Next, I will add the image of john but I will need to edit the photo to remove the existing background. I have used the quick selection tool to remove the back ground.
  • 14. • As the quick selection tool wasn’t able to remove the whole of the background near johns hair I had to use the Advanced hair selections tool. I had to gain select the whole of johns body and create a mask. • I had to mask the edge and create a smart radius. This gave his hair a lot more detail as seen on the black and white contrast.
  • 15. • I then used the rubber tool to get rid of the bumps on his hair and body to make him look smoother with less jagged edges. I then place him onto the blank canvas. • Now I decided to add the JUMP Masthead behind johns head. I simply used the text tool and typed ‘JUMP’. • I then changed the layer styles by double clicking on the ‘JUMP’ layer.
  • 16. • First, I changed the drop shadow to an opacity of 44% and put it on a angle of 151°. Then, I changed the stroke of the text to the same colour purple on my canvas. The size is 50 pixels and opacity at 62%.
  • 17. • Then, I used the text tool again to make the ‘John Allen’ headline. The styles I used her were slightly different. I first changed the text colour to the same as my canvas. Then I added a opacity of 86%, with a spread of 14% and size of 43 pixels.
  • 18. • Then I added the strapline which was just using the text tool and I put a purple box behind it which was a colour from the canvas. I also used the rectangle tool for the box behind it.
  • 19. • Then I made the barcode. In the bottom right corner I have made a white box which will fit the, barcode, ‘JUMP’, location, price, date of the issue, website, publisher, social media logos. These were all individually added via photos or just text.
  • 20. • I then added the individual cover stories with simple boxes and text. I changed the font by making some words bold, changing the distance between each letter and adding a stroke outline to the words.
  • 21. Creating the Double Page spread First of all I had to create a new canvas with the size shown on the screen shot. Below is what it looks like with a blank canvas. Now with using the ruler tool I was able to find the middle of the page a put a temporary line there using the line tool.
  • 22. I then inserted the image of john which I wanted to take up one half of the page. I had already edited him like I did for the front cover with using the advanced hair selection and I changed his skin by using the burn tool which made his skin darker and less pale and I included an audience behind him like he was a DJ.
  • 23. I put 4 lines onto the page as seen in the screen shot. I used this as a basis of where my columns would go. I also knew that I wanted quote from the interview to go into the middle of the interview. I then used the pen tool to make sure the text from the interview which I was about to insert wasn’t going to go over where I wanted the pull quote. So I used the pen tool to map out where the text could only go. The screen shot shows the text inside an invisible areas that I mapped out using the pen tool.
  • 24. This what it looked like after I had inserted all of the interview while using the pen tool. As seen in the screen shot there is a space left in the middle for my pull quote. As you can see, the second screen shot shows the pull quote. I also changed the colour of the quotation marks to pink to make the house styles consistent.
  • 25. I then added a drop capital (the initial) to the start of the interview. I also put another pull out onto the double page spread, I made the quotation marks pink again and the text white so that it stands out from the background. Then I put my magazines website at the bottom of the article. I used the hyperspace font for the website name. I also added the issue date and page number.
  • 26. I added the sub-heading to the page and the heading of the page. I got inspiration from mixmag magazine for the title as they too have long titles. I added who the interviewer and the photographer was, to fill in the blank space and make the magazine look more professional by giving credit to all of those involved. I then added coloured shapes to make the interview more colourful. I also got inspiration from mixmag magazine to add these.
  • 27. LO3 - Conclusion Learning Outcome 3 was the beginning of creating the magazine’s content where the photos, flat plan and the front cover & double page spreads are created in Photoshop in their finished form. The final learning outcome will be the final stages of the magazines production after the magazine has been completed.
