The Software's I have used to
Create my Magazine
 For my front cover and contents page I used
Photoshop to make them.
 For my double page spread I used InDesign to
make it.
The Front Cover
This front cover looks very simple on the eye however I had to use loads of different
methods to get the overall creation of this cover and there are loads of different layers
that have been used which I am going to go through.
The layers which
are circled down
the right hand side
are all the different
parts that have
been put together
to create my
magazine.
These are all the layers that have been
used. I decided to label them myself so I
knew what layer was which. Before I
labelled them myself they were
automatically labelled layer 1, layer 2
etc. I found this very confusing.
The Background
• I used a rectangle to create my background on.
• This was a change of plan as the picture I
decided to use for my front cover had a
cream/grey background.
• I decided that I wanted my whole background
that colour.
As you can see, the
grey background on the
image doesn’t look right
with the pure white
background.
What I did was draw a
rectangle round the
back of the image.
I used the eye dropper
tool and then clicked on
the colours in the top
right hand corner. I
added that colour to my
swatches.
I then filled in the background
the same colour as the
background of the image by
using the colour that I had put
into my swatches.
The Bullet Points
• The bullet points on my skyline were not as
straight forward as they look. I wasn’t sure
how to get bullet points on the text actually in
Photoshop.
• I asked a number of people on how to do it
and they couldn’t find a way.
• What I did was find a bullet point off google images and saved
it as a picture.
• I opened the picture on a separate Word document and then
cropped it down to size.
• I copied and pasted it onto my front cover and filled in the
bullet point in the colour red and placed in the top left hand
corner.
• I then copied that bullet point and pasted it so I could fit it into
the top right hand corner.
The Masthead
• The masthead ‘INSTRUMENTAL’ was not
directly made off Photoshop.
• I used the website www.dafont.com to get my
masthead created.
On the website I found these
font types best suited my front
cover.
I clicked on the font type I wanted
and typed in what I wanted to say
in the ‘Custom preview’ box.
I then print screened the image
onto Photoshop and cropped it
down to the size I wanted.
The Cover Lines
The labelling of
the cover lines
made it so
simple for me to
organise them in
an ordered way.
If I had to make
changes to any
of them then I
knew exactly
which one to go.
• The ones in the black box are all in the
same font.
• Even though these are the same font,
they look extremely similar to the
mastheads font.
• I also did something different with the
red fonts on the front cover which I will
show.
• I will use two examples to show what I
did with these fonts.
I chose this font for the cover lines
which you can see is extremely
similar to the masthead.
I did the same thing as before and typed
‘MADDI’ in. I then print screened this.
I then cropped it down to the size I
wanted and placed it on my front
cover.
I did this with all
of the black cover
lines on this front
cover.
As you already know I used
the same font for ‘MEGA’.
I then cropped it down to size I
wanted like I did with the others.
I then filled the text in red and I found
out that if I kept clicking on the font, it
would make it thicker.
This is what I finished with. The text
still had bits of black in it and I left
them in as that was keeping with
the consistency of my font choice.
Ellipses
• Ellipses are the circles I drew at the bottom of
the page.
• I decided to put the text describing the posters
available in my magazine.
• I did this as it is conventional to have
something like this on a front cover.
• They are simple to draw but something I hadn’t
done before.
I found the ellipse tool by right
clicking on the rectangle tool
on the toolbar. You then draw
out where you want it.
I then drew another one
to a size where it fit
comfortably behind the
initial ellipse. I did this so
it looked like a border.
I then filled in that
ellipse in red so it fitted
the colour scheme and I
then placed text in the
ellipses.
The Contents Page
A lot with what I did with the contents page I used on my front cover even though the
design may look a bit more complex I have only done the same thing. Again this was in
Photoshop so the layers helped me organise my contents page. I am not going to go
through another slide describing the layers again as I have already done that for the
front cover. I labelled the layers again for the same reasons.
The Background (White)
• I again decided to use rectangles to fill
out the background of my contents
page.
• I did this so that I could make a
chequered background using white
and black rectangles.
I drew a rectangle in the far
left corner. Again I had to
use the eye dropper tool to
put a colour in my swatch.
I had to use a swatch based on this
background again due to the background
in this image being a different colour to
the pure white background you originally
get on Photoshop.
I then added brightness to both
the rectangles and the
background of the main image.
I added the content onto these
rectangles as well.
• I hadn’t used rectangles to create
a background previously and this
was something new for me.
• I did exactly the same with the
black colour of my background
apart from filling the rectangles in
a different colour.
The Signature
• I put a signature of my name
underneath the editorial.
• I did this as it a convention for an
editorial.
• I did this using
www.mylivesignature.com
On the website I clicked on
the first option which said to
use the creation wizard.
The next thing I did was
enter my name.
I then picked the font
style I wanted for my
signature.
I then pick the size I
wanted however this
didn’t matter very much
as you can make it bigger
or smaller once inserted
into Photoshop.
You can then decide
whether you want to
change the font or
background colour. I
decided not to.
I then print screened the final signature and
saved it as a picture to be opened on my
contents page.
Other Features on the
Contents Page
The rest of the features on this contents page have all been used and explained in my front cover section. I
didn’t want to go repeating myself so I decided to put them all briefly into one slide.
• For my sub-headings I used Dafont for them and used the same fonts as previously used.
• For the body text, it was typed out on Photoshop itself using the font type Myriad Pro. I put the artists
names that are mentioned in bold and the page numbers in red and in brackets.
• For the image at the bottom of the page I just opened it in Photoshop and cropped it down to the size I
wanted it.
• With the masthead I did the same thing as my sub-headings and the font type is the same as the front
cover apart from the colour.
• The editorial is also written into Photoshop itself and is written in the same font as the rest of the body
text.
The Double Page Spread
This double page spread was created in InDesign which has similar features to Photoshop
however it is not the same and it does not have layers like Photoshop does. This was my
first time using InDesign and I learnt quite a few new technologies whilst using this that I
didn’t know about before.
The Masthead
I decided to used the font Gill Sans Ultra Bold to write the word ‘CONFINED’ as I wanted it to be
seen as a stern word as it means people are constricted which is what the problem is with
thinking when it comes to female artists being involved in Indie music.. I also used the size
100pt for ‘CONFINED’
I decided to use the font Mistral for ‘CONTEMPORARY’ which seems a lot gentler than
‘CONFINED’. I wanted it to look and sound gentler than ‘CONFINED’ as I believe that should
have some emphasis. I also used a font size of 90pt for ‘CONTEMPORARY’.
The Main Image
The main image I put
behind the text.
To do this is very simple. All you do is
place the image across your double
page spread right click on the image.
Hover over ‘Arrange’ and then click on
‘Send to Back’
This is then what you get. The image
is behind the whole of the double page
spread.
The black and white effected background was using
www.picmonkey.com which is explained in my blog.
The Body Text
The body text is placed around the front of
the main image and goes across two
pages.
I made the text black with a white outline
so that it would be readable on the black
and white background.
I made the text black by highlighting the text I
wanted and then going to the ‘T’ at the top of the
page and clicking the arrow next to it. I then clicked
the black colour which is highlighted above.
I made the outline of the text white by highlighting
the text and then clicking on the arrow below the
one I clicked for the black text. I then clicked on the
white colouring which is highlighted above.
As you can see the text is organised
in a conventional method of
paragraphing.
You go to the top left hand side of the page
and click on the icon which is highlighted
above and this gives you a whole range of
different ways of formatting.
You then go across the toolbar until you see this icon
which I have highlighted in a box above. You then click
on the amount of paragraphs you want to organise
your text into by clicking the up or down arrow.
Drop Cap
The conventional method of using the drop
cap to begin a magazine article could have
been shown on the body text slide however
there was not enough room so I am going to
show it on a different slide how I did it.
To get to the drop cap icon I
clicked on the ‘A’ in the top left
hand corner which I have
highlighted using a box in this print
screen.
I then clicked on the icon which is
highlighted by the box above with the ‘S’
still highlighted. I then clicked on the
arrows to make the letter bigger and I left
mine at 100% which created the drop
cap.
