Teams work best when members are committed to common goals, have defined roles and responsibilities, and effective communication. There are four stages of team building - forming, storming, norming, and performing. In the forming stage, the team agrees on goals and strategies. In storming, members realize the difficulty of the task and resistance can occur. During norming, members accept the team, rules, and each other. In performing, the team has gained understanding of processes, strengths, and the ability to prevent conflicts. Effective teamwork requires clear communication, participation, and awareness of the group process.
