Task 1
Instruction Leaflet
Supporting illustrations and diagrams
Within this leaflet, there are simple black and
white CAD (Computer Aided Design) images shown to
illustrate and anchor the different steps needed to
construct the product, making the instructions clearer to
the viewer so that ultimately they get the most from the
product as possible with it being properly assembled.
Typography
A simple, plain font has been used throughout the
whole of this instruction leaflet, this is to ensure that the
text is legible to a wide range of people and is not
limiting the factual writing product to a specific
audience, it makes it available to everyone.
The text has been put in bold in specific areas to
create some separation from headings, subheadings
and the relevant information, as well as highlighting
safety information.
A simple black and white colour scheme has
been used, this means that people are not distracted by
bright colours and it does not deflect from the
instructions given within the product.
Communication
The clarity and conciseness of this piece of
factual writing is of a very good quality, the register is
also very good, the leaflet contains simplistic language
that is short and quick to the point, the kind of language
that is understood by people of all ages and educational
backgrounds. The fact that this product is an instructions
manual means that it must be able to be read and
understood by a wide variety of people, this product is a
good example of when
communication is used well within factual copy.
The accuracy of this product will be very important for the reader, as if the copy within the instructions is not accurate
and concise enough, they will not be able to follow them correctly and therefore the leaflet is not doing its job and the
customer will not be able to assemble their product.
Clarity, conciseness and avoiding ambiguity have all been used within this leaflet with regards to the clear, numbered
and illustrated steps which are outlined. A formal register has been used in order to keep the copy professional and due to the
nature of the product, informal language is not needed.
Within this product there is no need for bias, and therefore evidencing of an argument, this is why this kind of product is
good example for how being clear and concise is the most effective way to have this form of factual copy. However this
concept would not work when applied to other forms of factual writing, such as factual journalism, unless the article is
ironically set up using this kind of format.
‘How To’ Guide
Supporting illustrations and diagrams
Within this ‘How to…’ article there is one photographic image that is representing the text. The image which has
been used is a good image as it is clear
as to what the message of the image
is, it follows stereotypes of losing weight
(what the article is about), and it is
relatable as this article has been taken
from a women’s magazine and the
image is of a woman’s foot. Even though
the image is relatable, it is not very
realistic, anchoring the article with an
informal feel, and almost make the title
of the article seem ‘too good to be true’
which is a contrast to the factual nature
of the article. This is the only image
which has been used with regards to the
article, and due to the text : image
ratio, this suggests that this particular
magazine is being aimed at an audience
with an above average reading
ability, which will also be reflected in the
register of the factual writing.
Typography
There are a number of different fonts that are featured within this piece of factual writing, which aesthetically make the
page look more interesting and helps to break up the article at first glance, as there is a lot of text within this double page
spread, so could seem daunting and un-interesting to some members of the magazine’s audience.
A slim, stylish font had been used for the title of the article, as well as resembling the subject of the article this will
attract the right kind of audience, women who are image and health conscious, this font will make them feel as though they
will benefit from reading the article.
Some of the copy has been bolded and italicised in certain specific places which makes the article again seem more
interesting. Within the title and subtitle both the use of bolding, italicising, and font size had been used to create an eyecatching start to the text. Bolding had been used within the actual article to mark separate steps and instructions to losing
weight, which increases the clarity of the copy and also means that if certain members of the audience are not wanting to read
the whole of the article to find out what the ‘5 steps’ are, they will be able to skip forward to the steps as they are clearly set
out by using a bold font.
Italics have been used within sub headings throughout the article, breaking up the text and making the whole of the
copy seem more legible, digestible, and less daunting for those readers who may not prefer to read an article with such a
large image : text ratio.
Black and white is the main colour
scheme for the typography of this piece
of factual writing, however there is one
figure within the title which has been
coloured red, this works well has
probably been used as the colour is
associated with urgency and therefore is
naturally eye-catching and bold. Having
the colour on this particular part of the
copy is effective as it is the main part of
the title which would be most appealing
to the audience, as 5 pounds is a
substantial amount of weight to lose, and
after establishing that the audience of
this magazine would be women who
cause about their health and
appearance, this means that the ‘5’
would be the most important part of the
title, and using the colour red adds to the
shock-factor. Also the red ties in nicely
with the red
marker on the scales within the image attached to the text, this visually connects the text and the image together, making the
page as a whole look balanced and more aesthetically pleasing. Overall having the rest of the text black on a white
background ensures that it is easily legible to all people, opening the verity of audience that the article will be accessible to.
Communication
Columns have been used within this article to break up the text and therefore make the clarity of the piece of writing
better, this is important as there is a significant amount of text featured on this double page spread, and therefore the eye
could easily become overwhelmed, the use of columns means that the page not only looks more interesting, however also
easier to read, which will be appealing to the magazines specific audience. However when you compare this piece to an
instructions leaflet this piece is not as clear, this is because they are two completely different pieces of factual writing, and the
journalist who wrote this particular piece will have been set a brief by the magazine as to what kind of language and register to
use, so that the piece will fit in with the rest of the articles within the magazine.
Due to the nature of this product, the copy is less concise, this is because of the fact that this piece, as well as being
factual writing, it is also journalistic, this means that the writing has to be appealing to the audience of this

particular magazine and also be a piece
of news worthy information or a
story, which will need more words than a
bullet pointed piece of information; even
the actual steps given within the article
are four or five lines long, to fit in with the
rest of the language within the magazine.
Because of the fact that there are
specific steps within the article on how to
lose weight, the copy is accurate and
avoids ambiguity without being too
concise. Due to of the title and the
audience, it is clear that the information
being disclosed within the article will be
appealing to the audience on a personal
level, this is why the register used within
the copy is less formal than an
instructions leaflet, and the language
being used is
more of that which would be used in a conversation, making the audience feel that the information being given to them is
valuable.
Within the article, the evidence of argument is strong, however it is also biased towards losing weight, as there are
some people who would disagree with the concept of losing weight, however because of the audience of the type of
magazine, there does not need to be two sides to the argument, because there is an assumption that all of the people buying
the magazine will be in agreement with the concept of losing weight to look good. There will be codes of practice such as the
editors code of practice that will need to be put in place to ensure that nothing is included within the text which could be
interoperated as an offence, this code covers such subjects as accuracy, privacy, harassment, discrimination. Some do not
apply to the nature of this particular article, however it will be the editors job to read through the text and apple the code.

Task 1

  • 2. Instruction Leaflet Supporting illustrations and diagrams Within this leaflet, there are simple black and white CAD (Computer Aided Design) images shown to illustrate and anchor the different steps needed to construct the product, making the instructions clearer to the viewer so that ultimately they get the most from the product as possible with it being properly assembled. Typography A simple, plain font has been used throughout the whole of this instruction leaflet, this is to ensure that the text is legible to a wide range of people and is not limiting the factual writing product to a specific audience, it makes it available to everyone. The text has been put in bold in specific areas to create some separation from headings, subheadings and the relevant information, as well as highlighting safety information. A simple black and white colour scheme has been used, this means that people are not distracted by bright colours and it does not deflect from the instructions given within the product. Communication The clarity and conciseness of this piece of factual writing is of a very good quality, the register is also very good, the leaflet contains simplistic language that is short and quick to the point, the kind of language that is understood by people of all ages and educational backgrounds. The fact that this product is an instructions manual means that it must be able to be read and understood by a wide variety of people, this product is a good example of when
  • 3. communication is used well within factual copy. The accuracy of this product will be very important for the reader, as if the copy within the instructions is not accurate and concise enough, they will not be able to follow them correctly and therefore the leaflet is not doing its job and the customer will not be able to assemble their product. Clarity, conciseness and avoiding ambiguity have all been used within this leaflet with regards to the clear, numbered and illustrated steps which are outlined. A formal register has been used in order to keep the copy professional and due to the nature of the product, informal language is not needed. Within this product there is no need for bias, and therefore evidencing of an argument, this is why this kind of product is good example for how being clear and concise is the most effective way to have this form of factual copy. However this concept would not work when applied to other forms of factual writing, such as factual journalism, unless the article is ironically set up using this kind of format. ‘How To’ Guide Supporting illustrations and diagrams Within this ‘How to…’ article there is one photographic image that is representing the text. The image which has been used is a good image as it is clear as to what the message of the image is, it follows stereotypes of losing weight (what the article is about), and it is relatable as this article has been taken from a women’s magazine and the image is of a woman’s foot. Even though the image is relatable, it is not very realistic, anchoring the article with an informal feel, and almost make the title of the article seem ‘too good to be true’ which is a contrast to the factual nature of the article. This is the only image which has been used with regards to the article, and due to the text : image ratio, this suggests that this particular magazine is being aimed at an audience with an above average reading ability, which will also be reflected in the register of the factual writing.

Within the title and subtitle both the use of bolding, italicising, and font size had been used to create an eyecatching start to the text. Bolding had been used within the actual article to mark separate steps and instructions to losing weight, which increases the clarity of the copy and also means that if certain members of the audience are not wanting to read the whole of the article to find out what the ‘5 steps’ are, they will be able to skip forward to the steps as they are clearly set out by using a bold font. Italics have been used within sub headings throughout the article, breaking up the text and making the whole of the copy seem more legible, digestible, and less daunting for those readers who may not prefer to read an article with such a large image : text ratio. Black and white is the main colour scheme for the typography of this piece of factual writing, however there is one figure within the title which has been coloured red, this works well has probably been used as the colour is associated with urgency and therefore is naturally eye-catching and bold. Having the colour on this particular part of the copy is effective as it is the main part of the title which would be most appealing to the audience, as 5 pounds is a substantial amount of weight to lose, and after establishing that the audience of this magazine would be women who cause about their health and appearance, this means that the ‘5’ would be the most important part of the title, and using the colour red adds to the shock-factor. Due to the nature of this product, the copy is less concise, this is because of the fact that this piece, as well as being factual writing, it is also journalistic, this means that the writing has to be appealing to the audience of this particular magazine and also be a piece of news worthy information or a story, which will need more words than a bullet pointed piece of information; even the actual steps given within the article are four or five lines long, to fit in with the rest of the language within the magazine. Because of the fact that there are specific steps within the article on how to lose weight, the copy is accurate and avoids ambiguity without being too concise.
