Research Note On Distressed Debt
Research Note on Distressed Debt
Distressed securities are securities of companies or government that are experiencing distress (either
in financial or operational terms), default, or even bankruptcy. In case of debt, this is called distressed
debt. Investing in distressed debt can result in big returns, but the downside is that when a company
goes completely bankrupt, the value of your securities can go to zero.
Distressed debt sells at a very low percentage of par value, for example 30 cents on the dollar. This
percentage indicates that you can buy debt that is worth 1$ at maturity for 30 cents, which seems very
attractive but there is of course a reason that it is only worth 30 cents on the dollar. If the distressed
company emerges as ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This limits the scope of potential investors to sophisticated individual investors, hedge funds, private
equity firms, vulture funds, and certain investment banks. The majority of distressed debt is bought by
these institutional investors because they have the resources, expertise, and sophisticated risk
management systems to assess the risk of these debt securities.
There are various ways investors can invest in distressed debt. The easiest way is to buy the distressed
debt in the bond market. Because most mutual funds are not allowed to invest in distressed debt, there
is ample supply of debt available shortly after a firm defaults. The second way is to buy distressed
debt directly from a mutual fund, since they have to sell according to their mandate. These
transactions are generally limited to institutional investors since large quantities of debt, and therefore
large quantities of cash, exchange hands. The third and final options is to buy directly into the
distressed firm. This involves working directly with the company to extend its credit, either in the
form of bonds or a revolving line of credit. Distressed companies usually need significant amounts of
cash for a turnaround, so it is common for a consortium of investment banks and hedge funds to
provide this cash to avoid overexposure to one

SALESF0RCE.COM:
SOFTWARE AS A SERVICE GOES MAINSTREAM
Salesforce.com has been considered one of the most disruptive technology companies of the past few
years and is credited with single handedly shaking up the software industry with its innovative
business model and resounding success. This company provides CRM solutions in the form of
software as a service leased over the Internet, as opposed to software bought and installed on
machines locally. It was founded in 1999 by former Oracle executive Marc Benioff, and has since
grown to 2,600 employees and earned $748 million in revenue in 2007.
Salesforce.com has over 43,000 corporate customers and well over 1 million subscribers.

However, it s still too soon to tell whether this prediction will turn out to be true. Salesforce faces
significant challenges as it continues to grow and refine its business.
The first challenge comes from increased competition, both from traditional industry leaders and new
challengers hoping to replicate Salesforce s success. Microsoft, SAP, and Oracle have rolled out
subscription based versions of their CRM products in response to Salesforce. Smaller competitors like
NetSuite also have made some inroads against Salesforce s market share.
Analysts predict that Microsoft has a chance to compete with Salesforce by developing merely an
acceptable on demand CRM product, because of the average customer s already established
familiarity with Microsoft applications. Also, Microsoft plans to offer their product at half the price of
Salesforce.com, using a tactic they have employed with great effect in other marketplaces to pressure
their competitors. Salesforce.com still has plenty of catching up to do to reach the size and market
share of their larger competitors. As of 2007, SAP s CRM market share was 25.7 percent, compared to
only 7 percent for Salesforce.com. IBM s customer base includes 9,000 software companies that run
their applications on their software and that are likelier to choose a solution offered by IBM over
Salesforce.com.
Another challenge for Salesforce.com is to expand its business model into other

The Catcher in the Rye
The book The Catcher in the Rye is placed around the 1950s narrated by a young man named Holden
Caulfield who himself is the protagonist. Holden is not specific about his setting, location, time and
other physicality while narrating the story but he makes one thing clear: He is undergoing treatment in
a mental hospital or infirmary. The events he narrates comprises of time in between the start of
Christmas break and him leaving his school as he is expelled. Holden is sixteen years old. His story
commences from Saturday following the end of classes at the Pencey prep school in Agerstown,
Pennsylvania. Pencey is Holden s fourth school; he has already failed out of three others. At Pencey,

cab and out of certain unmentioned curiosity he asks him about where the ducks in Central Park go
when the lagoon freezes, but his question annoys the driver. Holden has the cab driver take him to the
Edmont Hotel, where he checks himself in. Right from that Edmont Hotel s room Holden can see into
the rooms of some of the guests in the opposite wing. He watches a man putting on silk stockings,
high heels, a bra, a corset, and an evening gown. He also sees a man and a woman in another room

construes the couple s behavior as a form of sexual play and is both upset and provoked by it. After

Gome Key Marketing Problem
IDENTIFICATION OF KEY MARKETING PROBLEMS
1. Key Marketing Problems Faced by Gome in 2000
In 2000, Gome Electrical Appliances was one of the biggest home appliances retail chain in China
with an annual turnover of RMB 2.6 billion and 21 retail outlets spread across Beijing, Tianjin,
Shanghai, Chengdu and Chongqing. It was the market leader in color television market and color
television accounted for 60 70% of Gome s turnover in 1999 and 70 80% of those were supplied by
domestic brands. The key marketing problems faced by Gome in 2000 are enumerated below:
On June 9th 2000, the Color Television Price Alliance was formed by nine of the major domestic color
tv manufactureres in order to curtail price war and increase profit margins. One of ... Show more

The response of the consumer was very positive and Gome s belief in low price strategy was
reinstated. This breach of the rules set by the alliance led to another meeting of the nine members of
the alliance to decide on measures to compete with Gome. If the alliance step up its actions against
Gome, Gome should try and reach an agreement with Changhong whose inventory was to the tune of
1.68 million television sets as of May 2000. It would be a win win situation for both Changhong as
well as Gome. As it is quite evident from the price cuts in Prima color TVs that customers still
welcome low prices, this could give great competitive advantage to Gome. At the same time it should
expand its network to the rural areas and upcoming urban areas and start capturing more market share.
At the same time, Gome should also use its goodwill with foreign brands and use this opportunity to
lure foreign investors into the market. This opening into the growing China market for foreign brands
would enable Gome to better negotiate with them and achieve lowest prices for its products. This in
turn would enable Gome to offer more variety to its customers. In the meantime, Gome should raise
public awareness against this alliance and create a backlash in the market. All these steps would
definitely weaken the alliance and force them to retract. In the meantime, Gome should also start

The Labor Relations Act Of The Senate
Introduction Today s economic climate has lost and shed more jobs than ever. Organizations need
unions to survive and a process to keep them. Under the present conditions, unions need to embrace
revolutionary change. They need to experiment with innovative models and build on existing ones that
have already proven their value that works for workers, business, and overall society. Today s
Economic Climate with organizations that unions no longer survive in In the fall of 1934 Senator
Wagner introduced the National Labor Relations Act in the senate. On July 5, 1935, President Franklin
Roosevelt signed the National Labor Relations Act. This act was put into place to help unions survive,
under the section 7, it gave employees the right to form and join unions and it obligated employers to
bargain collectively with unions in a selective manner. Although, the future of organized labor in the
economy today looks grim, the unions will have to do whatever it takes to help keep contribute to a
healthy economy. They will have to do use whatever form it takes to help with the decline in private
unions as well. In the past decades, unions have stood to fall by the wayside, due to the contributing
factor of the National Labor Relations Act (NLRA). They do not adapt to external factors, such as
competition and productivity in the global economy. These factors are a problem for unionism by
themselves. The current state of the NLRA has magnified their effect.

Essay on Music Censorship
Music Censorship
Today, in the 1990 s, citizens in our society are being bombarded with obscene material from every
direction. From the hate lyrics of Gun s N Roses to the satanic lyrics of Montley Crue and Marilyn
Manson to the sexually explicit graphical content of today s movies, the issue is how much society is
going to permit and where we, as a society, should we draw the line. The freedom of speech has
always been considered a right, but that doesn t mean that you can shout, Fire! in a crowded movie
theater. The real question is whether such material is harmful or dangerous to our society.
Many people are asking whether or not we should censor offensive material. They believe that some
material is too obscene for ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
While some people feel that government officials are the best way to restrict offensive messages,
others feel that self censorship is a more effective method. A recent series of incidents suggests that
executives in many private firms have begun doing just that. Book publishers, TV stations, and others
have drawn the line when faced with words or images that are tasteless or offensive. For example, in
1990, Andy Rooney, a CBS news correspondent, was suspended for his racist remark, Blacks have
watered down their genes because the less intelligent ones... have the most children.
Another episode of self imposed censorship is when George Michael released his song I Want Your
Sex. In 1987, AIDS and other sexual diseases were rampantly spreading and his song condoned casual
sex. The MTV executives also sent the video for this song back because of the explicit, sexual images.
A third incident happened when MTV drew the line again, this time with Madonna s video for Justify
My Love. They said that the video illustrates Madonna s erotic fantasies. It was said to be too hot to
handle.
The advocates of the second solution agree that America is suffering from a deluge of offensive
messages, but they feel that the best way of dealing with the problem is not government censorship,
but private sector censorship.
The critics of this point of view think that private sector censorship will not be

The Philosophies of Alexander Hamilton and Thomas...
Preface The argument between Federalists and Anti Federalists might seem long gone to American
citizens, but still their philosophical foundations shape the teams, scope and size of the battlefield.
These philosophies go back to two lone men, Alexander Hamilton and Thomas Jefferson. Both fought
aggressively for a government based on their ideas, and both did make portions of the now standing
American government. This essay will outline the political, social and economic philosophies of both
men, how their philosophies influenced the government today, and a closing opinion.
Politics The political standings of Hamilton and Jefferson were the foundation and beginning of their
lifelong arguments and disagreements. Hamilton was the leader ... Show more content on

Jefferson didn t like high taxes, tariffs, regulations or even a national bank. These were all in violation
of the kind of society and government he wished to see. Jefferson believed in a utopia where all
people would be self sufficient farmers and have their own property, and a small government would be
used to do the minimal amount of work needed to keep the peace. Therefore, an economic system was
practically nonexistent. Alexander Hamilton, though, worked for a more complex economic system.
He planned out a national debt, public credit, a national bank and a plan to pay off the debts the nation
had accrued. He advocated to accept the old debts of the Articles of Confederation, war debts, and
state debts under his economic policy because it gives the government some legitimacy, and it allows
for the government to obtain credit from other countries easily. To Alexander Hamilton, that was just a
small part of economics though. He needed to fund the government, and so he was willing to do so via
tariffs, taxes, and bonds. This plan just called upon the clearing of the national debt, and didn t even
cover the vast amounts of commerce and mercantilism that he hoped would emulate England.
Social The social philosophies were not as complicated, since they would be a direct product of the
economy. It s evident that Jefferson s society would be small and simple, where all people would be

Urban Runoff Is The Primary Source Of Ocean Pollution
The oceans need to be protected because it is where life began and if not taken care of, life as we
know it will end. The well being of the ocean is constantly being threatened and needs to stop. When
dangerous substances go into the ocean, ecosystems suffer and become endangered along with the
lives of people and marine life. The importance of protecting and preserving the quality and
biodiversity of the world s coasts must be recognized because they are truly irreplaceable. If humans
are not educated , and become careless about what is thrown on the ground or sprayed on lawns,
disastrous effects follow when it comes to the condition of the ocean s ecosystems, which can
endanger life itself, leading to a problem only we can correct. There is historical evidence of ocean
pollution, although the problem still shadows us today. One of the most poorly understood causes
ocean pollution is urban runoff. Urban runoff is also one of the leading causes of ocean pollution,
Surfrider agrees, Urban runoff is often the primary source of ocean pollution. The Ocean Friendly
Gardens (OFG) Program educates and assists people in creating landscapes that utilize native plants,
permeable ground covers and water retention features to prevent urban runoff, create wildlife habitats
and design beautiful spaces (Surfrider). Surfrider has a program called The Ocean Friendly Gardens
where Surfrider goes to different areas that are more prone to urban runoff and creates a garden using

Political Satire in Jonathan Swift s Gulliver s Travel
Vision is the art of seeing things invisible.. Jonathan Swift
Introduction
Born on November 30, 1667, Irish author, clergyman and satirist Jonathan Swift grew up fatherless.
Under the care of his uncle, he received a bachelor s degree from Trinity College and then worked as a
statesman s assistant. Eventually, he became dean of St. Patrick s Cathedral in Dublin. Most of his
writings were published under pseudonyms. He best remembered for his 1726 book Gulliver s
Travels.
While leading his congregation at St. Patrick s, Swift began to write what would become his best
known work. In 1726, at last finished with the manuscript, he traveled to London and benefited from
the help of several friends, who anonymously published it as Travels into Several Remote Nations of
the World, in Four Parts. By Lemuel Gulliver, First a Surgeon, and then a Captain of Several Ships
also known, more simply, as Gulliver s Travels. The book was an immediate success, and hasn t been
out of print since its first run. Interestingly, much of the storyline points to historical events that Swift
had lived through years prior, during intense political turmoil. In 1742, Swift suffered from a stroke
and lost the ability to speak. On October 19, 1745, Jonathan Swift died. He was laid to rest next to
Esther Johnson inside Dublin s St. Patrick s Cathedral.

Borderlands La Frontera Summary
In this Chapter I feel that Anzaldua is trying to get the reader to understand the differences and
atruggles amongst cultures. The clash of cultures results in mental and emotional confusion. Living
inbetween more than one culture, you often get opposing messages from these cultures. Sometimes
when living within the Chicana culture common white beleifs conflict with the beleifs of the Mexican
culture. They both hold beleifs of the indifinous peopel and their culture. It creates a problem that the
dominant cultures views and beleifs are defiant to the others. This is very wrong because it creats the
problem of one being superior to the other. This especially relates to the Mexican culture and white
culture. This creates the assimilation problem when one culture is not accepted or considered below
another. In the book Borderlands La Frontera it states that El choque de un alma atrapado entre el
mundo del espiritu y el mundo de la tecnica a veces la deja entullada. Cradled in one culture,
sandwhiched between two cultures, stradling all three cultures and their value systems, ... People are
feeling torn between the culture they have always known, and a culture they are trying to fit into. The
author explains how this is seperating people and that we are going to have to accept what is and come

The Great Gatsby Passage Analysis
Gatsby Commentary Essay Within the exposition of the story, Fitzgerald introduces the future issues
between economic division of old money to give a background and set the tone for the rest of the
story. The novel The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald discusses the fall and decline of the
American Dream, however this particular passage intends to discuss the economic aspect of old
money and how those who belong to it differ from others. There were great differences between the
high and low class during the time period of The Great Gatsby, and that is particularly seen through
Fitzgerald s use of money. An analysis of the passage not only reveals the intentions to characterize

Once Tom had made his fortunes, he left Chicago and c[a]me east in a fashion that took your breath
away in order to spend his old money from his family in New York (9 10). In attempt to help fathom
the style and trends of old money, Fitzgerald uses the phrase that took your breath away , which does
in fact describe the lifestyles of Tom and his movements regarding the old money. Similarly to the
magnitude of his spending, Nick also describes Tom s life as steps of drifting for no particular reason,
here and there unrestfully from place to place, not having a purpose. Fitzgerald s archetype of drifting
from place to place, such as Midwest to East, when describing Tom s lifestyle, helps represent what
old money stands for as people like Tom have no sense of purpose with what they do and where they
go. Nick, on the other hand, has a different viewpoint and he says why they came here I don t know ,
because his visions and ideals with new money are very different to those of Tom and old money (12).
Contrasting Tom s ways of spending and drifting, Fitzgerald uses perspective to show contrasting
viewpoints of Nick (new money) and Tom (old money) through his confusion by saying I don t know .
Fitzgerald compares and contrasts the opposing lifestyles of new and old money through the ideas of

Summary Of Bertrand Russell s The Conquest Of Happiness
Bertrand Russell was a British philosopher and mathematician throughout the late 19th and 20th
centuries. He wrote in many philosophical areas, including epistemology, ethics, and metaphysics,
with some of his most notable works being Theory of Knowledge, Why I m Not a Christian, and In
Praise of Idleness. He also worked with mathematics and logic, penning Principia Mathematica and
Introduction to Mathematical Philosophy. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1950 for
various pieces of writing he had published. He was also very openly pacifist, and even went to jail in
1918 for publicly encouraging anti war ideology during World War I. Russell is widely considered to
be an incredibly influential thinker and writer. One of his popular works, The Conquest of Happiness,
discusses the unhappiness that many ordinary people suffer from and how to fix it. The first nine
chapters detail causes of unhappiness, including pessimism, competition, excitement, and emotional
fatigue. Russell displays many scenarios in which these qualities are present and why they cause such
unhappiness to begin with. He then spends seven more chapters explaining what causes happiness,
including an individual s relationships with their jobs, spouses, and other family. He demonstrates the
reasons why these are so effective in creating happiness in people and how these goals can be reached.
The book overall preaches contentment rather than total elation, relaxation rather than constant
excitement,

The Importance Of Planned Parenthood
Planned Parenthood, a nonprofit organization which provides affordable reproductive care, currently
receives government funding. Those in need of affordable health care can go to PPFA for STI
treatment, pap smears, and prevention of unintended pregnancies. The problem arises in PPFA s
prevention of unintended pregnancies, particularly abortion. But abortion is not the only issue the
public finds in the organization. The public has recently questioned PPFA s integrity and motives as
their controversial actions are exposed. Government funded health care should be easily accessible for
all people, but Planned Parenthood is not the organization for this. Instead, the government should
push its funds towards organizations whose practices are not controversial and still provide quality
health care.
Although Planned Parenthood provides other affordable health care services for men, women, and
children, many people find their service of abortion controversial and seek to defund them specifically
for the discontinuation of this practice. Abortion was legalized under the Roe vs Wade case in 1973
and soon after, PPFA made it one of their available services so they could provide maximum
reproductive health care for all women. Since its legalization, abortion has taken the lives of nearly
sixty million children. Out of the sixty million, PPFA is responsible for 7.7 million (Number of
Abortions). Defunding the organization would cause 1) an increase in birth rates, 2) an increase in

Descriptive Essay About A House
Arkansas, Only about a hour, maybe two hours long drive away from home. Over the course of the
day we meet new and different people, eat good food, and give gifts. Everyone is overly affectionate
and helps out in the kitchen. Squeezing around twenty people in the tiny house is a tight smoosh, even
if our family is almost half of that group. The house itself may not be that tiny but we re all gathered
in just the kitchen and living room, making it seem like a smaller space. At times, a few people stroll
out the glass door, onto the patio and into the back yard, yet even then it feels just a tad crowded,
especially since we were around people we d never met. From long road trips to the ice cream punch
to eating way too many rice krispie treats in one sitting, every part of that day went smoothly, giving
off a joyful, pleasant vibe. Joyful is a great feeling to have around Christmas time. The best part? It
was all captured in one sweet picture.
Starting with my father, smiling into the camera with his fork mid bite, his long sleeve shirt is beige
like the walls of a new house. A Hoyt hat sits on his bald head, the camera giving his face a shiny
glowing appearance. Next to him sits Mari, his girlfriend. She s the best friend of Maleeah, the host of
this party and the person cooking everything we re enjoying. Mari s hair is closer to white than it is
blonde, her roots still showing up on the darker side. Round sunglasses pull her hair out of her face.

CDO Rating
Another reason nobody believed Michael Burry and Steve Eisman was because of the fraudulent
economic activity taking place in the rating agencies. The biggest criminal act performed by the rating
agencies was misjudgements in their ratings of CDOs or collateralized debt obligations (Weisberg).
The CDOs were structured obligations, with several tranches of differing risk characteristics. The
senior tranche had first claim on the mortgage interest and principal paid by the subprime mortgages
in the mortgage pool backing each CDO issue (Poole). However, CDOs now are being used to take a
bunch of BBB and BB loans that didn t sell and repackaging them and turning it into a whole other

However, that is not all that the rating agencies did to destroy the system. The rating agencies also did
not distinguish between thick file FICO scores and thin file FICO scores (Lewis). A thin file FICO
score, is a score of an investor that had not done much borrowing (Lewis). The file was thin because
the borrower hadn t done much borrowing. For example, immigrants who had never failed to repay a
debt, because they had never been giving a loan, often had surprisingly high thin file FICO scores
(Lewis). These people who had high thin file FICO scores became more useful to the banks from a
credit rigging point of view, but the initial mistake came by the rating agencies who failed to identify
this problem and fix it. Since these people have high FICO scores, then when put through Moody s
model helps the banks get the money to lend to poor thin file FICO score people who need the money

Jones consistency in his vision and dedication to Jonestown were his biggest strength in his
management of trust. His followers were able to trust him because of his unwavering belief in his
vision and opinions. Jones also always had strong management of self. In his youth, he discovered his
natural speaking skill and his ability to manipulate. Over time, he worked toward developing these
talents and used them extensively to spread his vision. He knew his talents so well that he was even
able to choose his most efficient medium, religion, through which to push his vision. He was attracted
to organized religion mostly because it was a place where he could use his excellent oratory skills and
ability to coerce people into doing what he wanted them to, and therefore served as the best vehicle for
his goal of social change (Wikipedia). Out of Bennis ten competencies of dynamic leaders, Jim Jones
strongly exhibits four. The trait of self knowledge and the competency of management of self are
defined almost identically, so the previously discussed qualities that give him strong self management
are the same qualities that exemplify his strong self knowledge. Jones was also a risk taker, which is
obvious is almost every serious decision he ever made. He created what was essentially a brand new
branch of religion. He rented 4000 acres of land in Guyana with the goal that people would choose to

Essay on Personality Analysis
Abstract The purpose of this paper is to discuss characteristics of my personality. The main focus of
this paper will be how my personality has developed over time. As I age and encounter new and
different experiences, my personality has adapted and developed further. This paper will give an in
depth exploration into the people and events that have influenced my personality. Personality is
defined as a) the sum total of the physical, mental, emotional, and social characteristics of an
individual. b) the organized pattern of behavioral characteristics of the individual (Dictionary.com,
2010). Whether we realize it or not, personality defines us as people. There are many facets to my

I had to step out of my comfort zone and do what needed to be done in order to reach my goals. On
the graduate level, I find that it is easier to be an introvert and participate. Once the human element is
taken away, I can find myself being open. I do not see my classmates face to face so I can allow
myself to say things that I ordinarily would not do or say. As I have gotten older, some of the
introversion has faded to a certain extent, but it is still present. Through my job as a Special Education
Teacher, I have had to overcome a majority of my introversion so I can effectively do my job. On any
given day, I will have to speak to not only my students but also the office staff, coworkers, and
possibly some of the children s parents. Conversation goes both ways, so to be successful at my job; I
would have to be willing to be open and communicate with others more. I also have to realize that I
need to make the first step sometimes. Not everyone is going to come to me; there are times I am
going to have to go to others. Another characteristic of my personality is care. Despite my ever present
introversion, I have always harbored a deep care for most people. Early in my childhood, my parents
taught the importance of caring for others. Throughout my life, I have always put others before
myself. Sometimes I do this out of genuine care for the other party, but other times, I find myself

Reasons Why Student Athletes Should Not Be Paid For...
Division 1 and Division 2 colleges provide over 2.9 billion dollars a year in scholarships to student
athletes. Student athletes should not be compensated for participating in college sports. College
athletes can receive full ride scholarships for playing their sport of choice. Is the 40,000 dollars they
are receiving in scholarships not compensation; thus prompting the question is the top tier education
they are being provided with, not compensation enough? Most of the thousands of students that
participate in college sports compete for the love of the game, not for a paycheck. Furthermore,
college athletes understand that they may not compete at the pro level, in fact, only 2 % of college
athletes go on to play professionally. The main part of the term student athletes is student. Students do
not go to college expecting a check at the end of every month or to land a spot in the first round of the
draft, instead the purpose is to receive an education. All things considered, student athletes should not
receive compensation for playing sports in college because it would be almost financially impossible,
some are already provided with money from scholarships , and finally they are being provided with an
excellent higher education.
Some say colleges should pay athletes because it s a full time job, scholarships aren t enough, not all
players get scholarships or because the NCAA and universities make money off of the sports teams
and players. A big reason the controversy came

Gattegno And The Silent Way
Caleb Gattegno (1911 1988), one of the most prominent and productive educators of the twentieth
century, is best known for his innovative approaches to teaching and learning foreign languages (The
Silent Way). In 1972, Caleb Gattegno introduced The Silent Way, that is, a language teaching method
whose basic concept is that the teacher should remain silent much of the time, thus its name while the
students speak as much as possible. In the same way, Gattegno was under the impression that the
teacher should focus on the way students learn more often rather than how to teach. In fact, he
expressed support for language learning by problem solving, creative, discovering activity and all that,
which is directly opposed to drills such as seen in audiolingualism. He, on the other hand, contends
that students could naturally earn a new language like a child, through perception, awareness,
creativity, and other mental processes. Besides being critical of linguistic theory, he devoted his
thinking to a pedagogical perspective called the subordination of teaching to learning in that learners
demands are placed at the center of teaching, so teaching is subordinate or dependent to learning.
Gattegno holds that understanding the spirit of a language that ... Show more content on

The Parable Of The Alert Servant Made Simple Essay
The Parable of the Alert Servant Made Simple (Mark 13:33 37)
By Matthew Payne
Jan 11, 2012
Mark 13:33 37 reads:
Take heed, watch and pray; for you do not know when the time is. It is like a man going out to a far
country, who left his house and gave authority to his servants, and to each his work, and commanded
the doorkeeper to watch. Watch therefore, for you do not know when the master of the house is
coming in the evening, at midnight, at the crowing of the rooster, or in the morning lest, coming
suddenly, he find you sleeping. And what I say to you, I say to you all: Watch!
Throughout the New Testament, Jesus shared all about the signs of the time. He had been sharing that
there will be false Christs and there will be tribulation. The stars of Heaven will fall and all sorts of
things will happen before the coming of the end of days.
Jesus is much more than a wonderful person. While reading or listening to these parables, I hope you
will fully understand who He is and what is really going on. Today, Jesus has in fact gone to a far
country. This is no longer a parable. While it is true that when Jesus was on earth, this was a parable
with a funny significance, He had not yet gone to that far country but now Jesus has gone away. It
says just before this, concerning the day of his second coming, of that day no one knows, not even the
angels in Heaven nor the Son, but only the Father.
I have heard many recent accounts of people who have met Jesus in Heaven, and

Racist Beauty Standards
In this novel, The Bluest Eye by Toni Morrison, the author depicts a culture in which white people and
white lifestyles are idealized and the standards for beauty are very generalized around whites. In this
novel, the author questions the truths by which white standards of beauty are held and depicts the
impact and growth it has on her characters and the long term effects of these beauty standards .
Claudia was much better able to handle rejecting the white, middle class America s standards of
beauty. Claudia and Pecola are similar in the sense that they both suffered from racist beauty standards
and abuse growing up. However, Claudia was always the stronger of the two and did not feed into the
standards of beauty set in her society. Frankly, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I couldn t join them in their adoration because I hated Shirley (Morrison, 35). This quote from Claudia
s perspective shows her distaste for Shirley temple and Pecola and Frieda s love for her. Pecola
becomes so obsessed with the Shirley Temple cup that she drinks milk in excess just to use the cup
with her on it. Pecola is particularly fascinated by Shirley Temple s big blue eyes. Pecola after a life
time of obvious abuse, belittlement, and racist has very low self esteem and wants to be everything she
is not. She strongly connects beauty with desire and love, she starts to believe that if she had blue
eyes, all the cruelty and hatred she gets in her life, would disappear. This unrealistic and hopeless
desire for blue eyes, eventually leads to immeasurable madness. It had occurred to Pecola some time
ago that if her eyes, those eyes that held the pictures, and knew the sights if those eyes of hers were
different, that is to say, beautiful, she herself would be different (Morrison, 46). Pecola is finally
granted her overwhelming want for blue eyes. When she is finally granted her wish for blue eyes, she
receives it in a perverse and darkly ironic form. She is only able to be granted blue eyes in exchange
for her sanity. Pecola loses her mind and ultimately her insight into the outside

My Search For Going To College
What do you mean I cannot live with my parents for the rest of my life? So you mean to tell me that I
actually have to become an adult? . These have been the thoughts plaguing my mind for the past four
years and now that my time is up, I get to do something about them. My main problem with going to
college is being away from my home, my family, and my friends. I knew that if I were to pick the
wrong college, I would be running back to my mom in a weeks time. Finding the right college is a
universal challenge for every upcoming college student, but when I found Baylor University I knew it
was my new home.
My hunt for the perfect college started my freshmen year of high school. During that time in my life, I
felt there was a big weight on my shoulders to be successful in life. Since picking the right college is a
big part of being successful, I was feeling overwhelmed. There are about 1,400 colleges in the United
States and I had to narrow that down to a top five, frantic was an understatement about how I was
feeling. Taking a step back to look at the big picture, I decided to evaluate what I was looking for in a
college; I came up with the following list: have my desired major (Astrophysics), be far away from
home (but not too far), and to live in a big city.
Applying my new set of criteria, I now only had 3 colleges to choose from: University of Texas at
Austin, Rice University, and Baylor University. I gave my contact information to each of them and in
time I had a scheduled visit to Baylor University.
When I arrived on the Baylor campus I immediately felt at home. I had the honor of attending the
Baylor Premier, which acts like a huge campus tour for everyone that attends the seminar.
Everybody was so genuinely nice and enthusiastic about me being there, I got the feeling that was
where I belonged. I could see myself walking the campus with my newly found friends on the way to
our The Atomic Theory 101 class. Although I have a tendency of letting my head float in the sky, I had
to snap myself out of my dreamland and back into reality to remember that I still had two other
options for my perfect college. Not wanting to make my decision after only seeing one school I
scheduled campus tours with The

Sexuality In Eve Boland s Misogyny
and beauty portraying her her breasts, hips and genitals as the fuel, which will enable this fire to burn.
As she disconnects from her physical obligation, she seeks her simplification as just a bone, able to
return to its origin, free of sin.
We see that how the myth has influenced the society and how badly it has affected the speaker that she
carries a sense of guilt for having a female body. She empties her body in an attempt to rid herself of
sins. When Boland refers to him when speaking about slipping back into him and the song of his
breath she is making a biblical illusion to Adam(woman was made from his rib, which she also makes
reference to). The words and phrases such as sinful and Learned her lesson used to describe she are an
illusion to Eve who was overcome by greed and temptation and who sinned and ate the forbidden
fruit, just as an anorexic is tempted to eat food which is considered bad.
This myth has embedded in culture to that extent that we take it for reality and we see that how Eve s
sexuality influences the speaker in the poem which creates a hatred for the self and she blames her
female sexuality for it. How the myths which were manipulated by the patriarchy has ... Show more

Essay On Church Reflection
For my second church reflection, I attended NewSpring Church. I attended the eleven o clock service
at the Greenville campus, which was located in the TD Convention Center. Since this was not the
main campus, the sermon had to be watched on the screen. However, the music was live. This service
had a casual and contemporary feel. Although this church is Southern Baptist, it did not have the
typical Baptist feel. Everything seemed to be more casual, modern, and laid back, especially before
and after the service. Interestingly, even though this service was very modern and contemporary, there
was still a great lack of diversity. Their staff, volunteers, band, and pastors were very diverse, but the
people attending the church were less diverse. The general demographic was made up of Caucasian
families as well as many Caucasian teenagers and young adults. There were a few African Americans
(the worship leader was African American), but overall there was a lack of Hispanics, Asians, and
African Americans. There were certainly not very many older adults either.
Interestingly, in addition to the modern atmosphere, all of the people were very casually dressed. Most
of the men had shorts and t shirts on and the women mostly had pants or shorts on as well. I do not
think that there is anything wrong with this, and Newspring even states that they want you to come
however you are and however you are dressed, but this is an important observation that added to the
culture of the church.

Pope John Paul II s Eugene Letter
Fr. Joseph Byerley used scripture, St. Pope John Paul II s Apostolic letter on the meaning of human
suffering and practical examples to answer the age old question of why God allows good people to
suffer.
I will attempt to give a summary of his talk here, but will preface that this is just a summary and does
not do justice to the clarity, depth and beauty of his talk.
He started by defining the word Redemption, which means to buy back or ransom. Human suffering,
when united with Christ s, can remit punishment due to sin. This is not connected to forgiveness.
Divine justice requires that the original goodness which existed prior to the offense must be restored.
We may be forgiven of our sins, but there is still damage which must be repaired. ... Show more

It is a real and true participation in the loving sacrifice of Christ that earned our redemption. We
participate in that.
John Paul II said, Thus to share in the sufferings of Christ is at the same time to suffer for the
Kingdom of God. In the eyes of the just God, before his judgement, those who share in the suffering
of Christ become worthy of His kingdom....Christ has led us into His kingdom through His suffering,
and also through suffering, those surrounded by the mystery of Christ s redemption, become mature
enough to enter into His kingdom.
It s not that redemption is not complete. We know that redemption is complete, but we say that
redemption is also continually open to all love that is expressed through human suffering. Suffering
can be offered up for others as an act of love. But as St. Catherine of Siena said, we must not go out
looking for suffering, as in and of itself, it is not good. Enough is sent our way, without searching it
out. Only when it is consumed in love, can it be converted to good. So as we offer up our suffering,
remember what St. Augustine said, A general derives no joy from vanquishing a weak

The Mayan Civilization And The Maya Empire
The Mayan civilization or the Maya Empire, centered in the tropical lowlands of what is now
Guatemala, reached the peak of its power and influence around the sixth century A.D. The Maya
excelled at agriculture, pottery, hieroglyph writing, calendar making and mathematics, and left behind
an astonishing amount of impressive architecture and symbolic artwork. Most of the great stone cities
of the Maya were abandoned by A.D. 900. The Maya civilization was one of the most dominant
indigenous societies of Mesoamerica. Unlike other scattered indigenous populations of Mesoamerica,
the Maya were centered in one geographical block covering all of the Yucatan Peninsula and modern
day Guatemala; Belize and parts of the Mexican states of Tabasco and Chiapas; and the western part
of Honduras and El Salvador. This concentration showed that the Maya remained relatively secure
from invasion by other Mesoamerican peoples.
Within that expanse, the Maya lived in three separate sub areas with distinct environmental and
cultural differences: the northern Maya lowlands on the Yucatan Peninsula; the southern lowlands in
the Peten district of northern Guatemala and adjacent portions of Mexico, Belize and western
Honduras; and the southern Maya highlands, in the mountainous region of southern Guatemala. The
earliest Maya settlements date to around 1800 B.C., or the beginning of what is called the Preclassic
or Formative Period. The Middle Preclassic Period also saw the rise of the first major

The Role Of The Senate In The Roman Empire
This extensive system of administration underwent a change when the Republic transitioned into an
Empire. Then an emperor was at the top and below him came the patrician class, which held the
administrative power. An example that shows the role of the Senate is: Senators during the Republic
held the greatest power in the Roman state. They had many responsibilities, such as governing of all
of Rome s finances, making critical decisions about deploying the military, guiding all the diplomatic
missions and engaging in commerce or investing in the trade. (Roman Republic and Empire VOL.3 /
Pg. 198) As it can be seen from the quote, the Senate was an institution that ran the whole Republic.
Its social status was immense. They provided an effective ruling of the state and although, they didn t
create the laws (consuls did), the senators ensured consistency, which was a needed element in a
democracy. This ensured that the consuls and senators had their own position, and only one can rule
over the other. Later, with the gradual establishment of the Empire, the role of the Senate weakened.
Still, during that time the emperor sometimes looked up to the Senate for making appropriate
decisions, concerning the empire. Another example shows the complex system of Cursus Honorum.
Praetors: the praetorship was one of the most powerful offices in the Roman Republic, second only to
the consulship. Urban praetors became increasingly responsible for law courts. During the empire they

One that is very familiar is The Holocaust. It was the genocide of the Jewish faith during World War II

Many examples in history show multiple times where people have banded together to fight for the
common good, but they might always notice how bad it actually in. This is what happened in the

1. What is the Lender of Last Resort (LOLR)?
The term Lender of Last Resort stems from the French phrase dernier ressort . The first recorded use
of the term Lender of Last Resort originates from a document called Observations on the

Bank of England the function of dernier ressort .

The Book Outliers The Story Of Success By Joe Flom
The story of Joe Flom incorporates many aspects of the first half of the book Outliers The Story of
Success. Malcolm Gladwell uses comparisons of other families with similarities of Flom s story to
demonstrate why he is successful. The story of Flom not only has what the previous chapters present
but also some new concepts. At the beginning of the chapter Gladwell tells the reader about Flom s
success and then jumps backwards to explain how it occurred. He also explains why some people
thrive while others do not such as lacking a certain skill or background. The first lesson of this chapter
is the importance of culture. Gladwell tells the story of one of Flom s classmates, Alexander Bickel.
Doing this shows a meaningful connection between everyone that was a Jewish immigrant and just of
a single person. This is shown by both stories being similar in the protagonist, apart from the end
result, and the denial of a first rate law firm. Therefore it is seen as an impediment, but it is a golden
opportunity (124). Because Flom was forced to start his own firm or join a second rate one, he chose
to join an up and coming new firm which he then elevates to the top. This leap to the top happened
because he was part of a newer firm. Gladwell writes about this portion as a barrier for Flom intended

Alloy Wheel Protectors Research Paper
Alloy Wheel Protector: The Best Way to Safeguard Your Rims
Wheels enhance the appearance of cars and increase their value. Despite the benefits, they are easily
damaged by routine driving. As wheels become damaged, their appearance diminishes and can lead to
subsequent damage. Additionally, repair for wheels and rims is expensive and time consuming. The
most leading edge and best solution for safeguarding wheels is an alloy wheel protector.
Protecting Your Investment
Wheels are not cheap even though they can be damaged in a blink of an eye. Minor damage can
quickly lead to erosion and alter the integrity of the wheel. As such, protecting wheels is essential.
Alloy wheel protectors help to cover up preexisting damage while also preventing more scratches and
dents from occurring. The protector thinly lines the rim, easily covering up ... Show more content on

Tires often have to be removed and most repairs require a technician. Wheel protectors are a nice
alternative to expensive repairs.
The protectors do not require a technician and can be applied to all four tires in less than ten minutes.
Additionally, they are much cheaper than getting the rim repaired. The protectors cover the damage
and make it seem as if it was never there, making wheels look new again without ever having to
consult a technician.
Wheels in and of themselves are expensive, keeping them fresh should not be. Wheel protectors are an
inexpensive way to maintain wheels.
Variety of Colors and Options
Wheel protectors come in many different colors, allowing them to be a nice enhancement to the wheel.
In addition to providing protecting, they can add additional style to the car. For example, for red cars,
a red alloy wheel protector may help to bring out the color. The color choices are endless, creating an
opportunity to further magnify the

hip hop Essay
Have you ever heard someone say, quot;I hate all music. quot;? Lately though music has been
criticized for corrupting teen s minds. Hip Hop is being blamed for all the crimes and murders in cities
all over America and heavy metal is being blamed for giving teens only dark images and thoughts in
their minds.
First we must ask what Hip Hop is to us or to others, who simply don t know or may never feel our
movement in society. This form of poetry and story telling has took growth from within a deprived
New York neighborhood during 1970s is spread worldwide, even non english speaking countries strive

Whether it is to force a change or to create something new deviance is at a strong high. At the dawn of
a new millennium some of society feel the need to express themselves better then the regular norms
and leave our mark on the world. As they say the young ones has more to teach then there is to learn.
If this is so then why is that no one listens to us, but instead they condemn us saying we are nothing
but trouble. The challenges that we are given to don t meet our satisfaction, and this is why we are
stubborn because no one listens to words instead society tries to fix our vision by drowning our
thoughts. Society is often perceived as a rich and fashionable social class depending on how you want
to see it, but to us its just normal people with enough to buy themselves a mask to hide away from
conformity, why hide yourselves, when the hip hop culture teachers you to be out spoken and strong
within yourselves.
The phenomenon of hip hop has spawned a new way of dressing, acting and speaking adopted by
young people, especially males. Hip hop and its music and speech patterns known as hip hop or rap or
gangsta rap has moved out of the ghettos and into suburban middle class neighborhoods, especially
among the young adult of all races in those neighborhoods. Finally, how hip hop/rap/gangsta came to
be and what it owes to previous what is real life.

Alamo American Military History
The Battle of the Alamo is one of the most famous battles in American military history, even moreso
because it was a horrendous defeat. The people of Texas had declared themselves independent from
Mexico. The Mexican Army, under President and General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna, were
determined to bring Texas back into the fold. Santa Anna led the Army on a campaign into Texas
territory. The Alamo, originally named Mision San Antonio de Valero, was a church first and
foremost. Near the city of San Antonio de Bexar, the Alamo was used as a home for Christian
missionaries and the Native Americans they converted. This church was also in a strategic location,
protecting as it did the road from Mexico further northeast into what was now the Republic of Texas.

Santa Anna saw the need to take the Alamo, to show his military superiority. In late February 1836,
the Mexican Army marched toward the Alamo. They arrived on February 23. At that time, the
Mexican force numbered 6,000. The total number of men defending the Alamo was no more than 250.
(Sources still debate the exact number.) Many were from Texas; many were not. The outsiders came
from 28 countries and U.S. states. They ranged in age from 16 to 57. The Mexicans had brought a
large number of cannons as well, but the army settled down for a siege, hoping to weaken the already
outnumbered defenders. Bugles blared at all hours of the day and night. Random blasts of artillery fire
punctuated the long days and nights that the defenders were having to endure. Twelve days later, on
March 6, the Mexican Army moved in. By this time, their numbers were significantly reduced because
of illness or desertion. Still, the number of Mexican soldiers that stormed the Alamo on that day was
close to 1,500. See more at:

Jaffe V. Samsung Elecs
Jaffé v. Samsung Elecs. Co.
Qimonda AG, a German semiconductor manufacturer, had patent cross licenses with many of its
competitors. Such licenses, in industries like electronics, allow parties in effect to have a truce with
respect to patents, so that they may proceed their respective businesses. Qimonda file bankruptcy and
ceased operations, so no longer needed the protection of the cross licenses. Rather, it terminated the
licenses under German bankruptcy law, to replace them with licenses under which it would receive
royalty payments. Qimonda filed a chapter 15 bankruptcy proceeding in the United States, to do the
same with its American licenses. The representative committed to re license Qimonda s patent
portfolio to the Licensees at a reasonable and nondiscriminatory ( RAND ) royalty. However, the
American courts held that US bankruptcy law did not allow licenses. Chapter 15 of the Bankruptcy
Code allows the representative of a foreign bankruptcy proceeding to file an ancillary proceeding in
the United States. It also allows broad recognition of orders entered in the foreign bankruptcy
proceeding. But the recognition is subject to certain safeguards. The US bankruptcy court may refuse
to apply the foreign order if the action would be manifestly contrary to the public policy of the United
States. In addition, the court must ensure that the interests of the creditors and other interested entities,
including the debtor, are sufficiently protected.

I Want To Pursue Scholarship
I believe that I am a good candidate to receive an award from the Lois A. Braithwaite Scholarship
fund because I am a firm believer in the importance and necessity for community service and
education in our world today. I grew up with the great understanding that getting an education was of
the highest importance. Both of my parents were always interested in public service and instilled in
me the necessity to help others. From the start of kindergarten until now, they have been supportive in
helping me keep me focused on being a strong student. For this reason, I have chosen to major in
Legal Studies (Pre Law). I am currently pursuing this dream as a freshman, at St John s University in
Queens, New York.
During the process of selecting colleges, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
John s with a Bachelors of Science in Legal Studies, I will attend law school in order to become a
corporate attorney. My goal is to attend either Seton Hall University Law School or University of
North Carolina Law School. I also have a desire to build on my knowledge of politics and assist others
in my community who at times can be without a voice. Possibly, I would even consider becoming a
public servant on a local political level. In fact, I currently have the great opportunity of interning with
a local politician from my Bergen County. This internship has helped me learn more about the
different aspects of politics, as well as the inner workings of law. My task during this internship has
included: attending reelection events, attending focus meetings, informing citizens about upcoming
elections and a variety of items related to the position. As long as I am serving others, I will be
content. I am also taking two summer classes in order to gain more credits which will help me to
hopefully graduate earlier. All of my many life goals can and will be accomplished through hard work,
consistency and humility. I feel if granted this scholarship, it will help me continue to advance
academically and push me further in meeting my goal of helping and serving others. This scholarship
will also help me with my college debt which will unfortunately be in six figures by my time of
graduation. I am appreciative for this Committee s review of my

  • 2. Research Note On Distressed Debt Research Note on Distressed Debt Distressed securities are securities of companies or government that are experiencing distress (either in financial or operational terms), default, or even bankruptcy. In case of debt, this is called distressed debt. Investing in distressed debt can result in big returns, but the downside is that when a company goes completely bankrupt, the value of your securities can go to zero. Distressed debt sells at a very low percentage of par value, for example 30 cents on the dollar. This percentage indicates that you can buy debt that is worth 1$ at maturity for 30 cents, which seems very attractive but there is of course a reason that it is only worth 30 cents on the dollar. If the distressed company emerges as ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This limits the scope of potential investors to sophisticated individual investors, hedge funds, private equity firms, vulture funds, and certain investment banks. The majority of distressed debt is bought by these institutional investors because they have the resources, expertise, and sophisticated risk management systems to assess the risk of these debt securities. There are various ways investors can invest in distressed debt. The easiest way is to buy the distressed debt in the bond market. Because most mutual funds are not allowed to invest in distressed debt, there is ample supply of debt available shortly after a firm defaults. The second way is to buy distressed debt directly from a mutual fund, since they have to sell according to their mandate. These transactions are generally limited to institutional investors since large quantities of debt, and therefore large quantities of cash, exchange hands. The third and final options is to buy directly into the distressed firm. This involves working directly with the company to extend its credit, either in the form of bonds or a revolving line of credit. Distressed companies usually need significant amounts of cash for a turnaround, so it is common for a consortium of investment banks and hedge funds to provide this cash to avoid overexposure to one ... Salesforce Essay READ THE BELOW CASE SALESF0RCE.COM: SOFTWARE AS A SERVICE GOES MAINSTREAM Salesforce.com has been considered one of the most disruptive technology companies of the past few years and is credited with single handedly shaking up the software industry with its innovative business model and resounding success. This company provides CRM solutions in the form of software as a service leased over the Internet, as opposed to software bought and installed on machines locally. It was founded in 1999 by former Oracle executive Marc Benioff, and has since grown to 2,600 employees and earned $748 million in revenue in 2007. However, it s still too soon to tell whether this prediction will turn out to be true. Salesforce faces significant challenges as it continues to grow and refine its business. The first challenge comes from increased competition, both from traditional industry leaders and new challengers hoping to replicate Salesforce s success. Microsoft, SAP, and Oracle have rolled out subscription based versions of their CRM products in response to Salesforce. Smaller competitors like NetSuite also have made some inroads against Salesforce s market share. Analysts predict that Microsoft has a chance to compete with Salesforce by developing merely an acceptable on demand CRM product, because of the average customer s already established familiarity with Microsoft applications. Also, Microsoft plans to offer their product at half the price of Salesforce.com, using a tactic they have employed with great effect in other marketplaces to pressure their competitors. Salesforce.com still has plenty of catching up to do to reach the size and market share of their larger competitors. As of 2007, SAP s CRM market share was 25.7 percent, compared to only 7 percent for Salesforce.com. IBM s customer base includes 9,000 software companies that run their applications on their software and that are likelier to choose a solution offered by IBM over Salesforce.com. It was the market leader in color television market and color television accounted for 60 70% of Gome s turnover in 1999 and 70 80% of those were supplied by domestic brands. This breach of the rules set by the alliance led to another meeting of the nine members of the alliance to decide on measures to compete with Gome. If the alliance step up its actions against Gome, Gome should try and reach an agreement with Changhong whose inventory was to the tune of 1.68 million television sets as of May 2000. It would be a win win situation for both Changhong as well as Gome. As it is quite evident from the price cuts in Prima color TVs that customers still welcome low prices, this could give great competitive advantage to Gome. At the same time it should expand its network to the rural areas and upcoming urban areas and start capturing more market share. At the same time, Gome should also use its goodwill with foreign brands and use this opportunity to lure foreign investors into the market. This opening into the growing China market for foreign brands would enable Gome to better negotiate with them and achieve lowest prices for its products. This in turn would enable Gome to offer more variety to its customers. In the meantime, Gome should raise public awareness against this alliance and create a backlash in the market. All these steps would definitely weaken the alliance and force them to retract. In the meantime, Gome should also start ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Under the present conditions, unions need to embrace revolutionary change. They need to experiment with innovative models and build on existing ones that have already proven their value that works for workers, business, and overall society. Today s Economic Climate with organizations that unions no longer survive in In the fall of 1934 Senator Wagner introduced the National Labor Relations Act in the senate. On July 5, 1935, President Franklin Roosevelt signed the National Labor Relations Act. This act was put into place to help unions survive, under the section 7, it gave employees the right to form and join unions and it obligated employers to bargain collectively with unions in a selective manner. Although, the future of organized labor in the economy today looks grim, the unions will have to do whatever it takes to help keep contribute to a healthy economy. They will have to do use whatever form it takes to help with the decline in private unions as well. In the past decades, unions have stood to fall by the wayside, due to the contributing factor of the National Labor Relations Act (NLRA). They do not adapt to external factors, such as competition and productivity in the global economy. These factors are a problem for unionism by themselves. From the hate lyrics of Gun s N Roses to the satanic lyrics of Montley Crue and Marilyn Manson to the sexually explicit graphical content of today s movies, the issue is how much society is going to permit and where we, as a society, should we draw the line. The freedom of speech has always been considered a right, but that doesn t mean that you can shout, Fire! in a crowded movie theater. While some people feel that government officials are the best way to restrict offensive messages, others feel that self censorship is a more effective method. A recent series of incidents suggests that executives in many private firms have begun doing just that. Book publishers, TV stations, and others have drawn the line when faced with words or images that are tasteless or offensive. For example, in 1990, Andy Rooney, a CBS news correspondent, was suspended for his racist remark, Blacks have watered down their genes because the less intelligent ones... have the most children. Another episode of self imposed censorship is when George Michael released his song I Want Your Sex. In 1987, AIDS and other sexual diseases were rampantly spreading and his song condoned casual sex. The MTV executives also sent the video for this song back because of the explicit, sexual images. A third incident happened when MTV drew the line again, this time with Madonna s video for Justify My Love. They said that the video illustrates Madonna s erotic fantasies. It was said to be too hot to handle. The advocates of the second solution agree that America is suffering from a deluge of offensive messages, but they feel that the best way of dealing with the problem is not government censorship, but private sector censorship. The critics of this point of view think that private sector censorship will not be ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Preface The argument between Federalists and Anti Federalists might seem long gone to American citizens, but still their philosophical foundations shape the teams, scope and size of the battlefield. These philosophies go back to two lone men, Alexander Hamilton and Thomas Jefferson. Both fought aggressively for a government based on their ideas, and both did make portions of the now standing American government. This essay will outline the political, social and economic philosophies of both men, how their philosophies influenced the government today, and a closing opinion. These were all in violation of the kind of society and government he wished to see. Jefferson believed in a utopia where all people would be self sufficient farmers and have their own property, and a small government would be used to do the minimal amount of work needed to keep the peace. Therefore, an economic system was practically nonexistent. Alexander Hamilton, though, worked for a more complex economic system. He planned out a national debt, public credit, a national bank and a plan to pay off the debts the nation had accrued. He advocated to accept the old debts of the Articles of Confederation, war debts, and state debts under his economic policy because it gives the government some legitimacy, and it allows for the government to obtain credit from other countries easily. To Alexander Hamilton, that was just a small part of economics though. He needed to fund the government, and so he was willing to do so via tariffs, taxes, and bonds. This plan just called upon the clearing of the national debt, and didn t even cover the vast amounts of commerce and mercantilism that he hoped would emulate England. Social The social philosophies were not as complicated, since they would be a direct product of the economy. The well being of the ocean is constantly being threatened and needs to stop. When dangerous substances go into the ocean, ecosystems suffer and become endangered along with the lives of people and marine life. The importance of protecting and preserving the quality and biodiversity of the world s coasts must be recognized because they are truly irreplaceable. If humans are not educated , and become careless about what is thrown on the ground or sprayed on lawns, disastrous effects follow when it comes to the condition of the ocean s ecosystems, which can endanger life itself, leading to a problem only we can correct. There is historical evidence of ocean pollution, although the problem still shadows us today. One of the most poorly understood causes ocean pollution is urban runoff. Similarly to the magnitude of his spending, Nick also describes Tom s life as steps of drifting for no particular reason, here and there unrestfully from place to place, not having a purpose. Fitzgerald s archetype of drifting from place to place, such as Midwest to East, when describing Tom s lifestyle, helps represent what old money stands for as people like Tom have no sense of purpose with what they do and where they go. Gattegno And The Silent Way Caleb Gattegno (1911 1988), one of the most prominent and productive educators of the twentieth century, is best known for his innovative approaches to teaching and learning foreign languages (The Silent Way). In 1972, Caleb Gattegno introduced The Silent Way, that is, a language teaching method whose basic concept is that the teacher should remain silent much of the time, thus its name while the students speak as much as possible. In the same way, Gattegno was under the impression that the teacher should focus on the way students learn more often rather than how to teach. In fact, he expressed support for language learning by problem solving, creative, discovering activity and all that, which is directly opposed to drills such as seen in audiolingualism. He, on the other hand, contends that students could naturally earn a new language like a child, through perception, awareness, creativity, and other mental processes. Jesus is much more than a wonderful person. While reading or listening to these parables, I hope you will fully understand who He is and what is really going on. Today, Jesus has in fact gone to a far country. This is no longer a parable. While it is true that when Jesus was on earth, this was a parable with a funny significance, He had not yet gone to that far country but now Jesus has gone away. It says just before this, concerning the day of his second coming, of that day no one knows, not even the angels in Heaven nor the Son, but only the Father. I have heard many recent accounts of people who have met Jesus in Heaven, and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Racist Beauty Standards In this novel, The Bluest Eye by Toni Morrison, the author depicts a culture in which white people and white lifestyles are idealized and the standards for beauty are very generalized around whites. In this novel, the author questions the truths by which white standards of beauty are held and depicts the impact and growth it has on her characters and the long term effects of these beauty standards . Claudia was much better able to handle rejecting the white, middle class America s standards of beauty. I couldn t join them in their adoration because I hated Shirley (Morrison, 35). This quote from Claudia s perspective shows her distaste for Shirley temple and Pecola and Frieda s love for her. Pecola becomes so obsessed with the Shirley Temple cup that she drinks milk in excess just to use the cup with her on it. Pecola is particularly fascinated by Shirley Temple s big blue eyes. Pecola after a life time of obvious abuse, belittlement, and racist has very low self esteem and wants to be everything she is not. She strongly connects beauty with desire and love, she starts to believe that if she had blue eyes, all the cruelty and hatred she gets in her life, would disappear. This unrealistic and hopeless desire for blue eyes, eventually leads to immeasurable madness. It had occurred to Pecola some time ago that if her eyes, those eyes that held the pictures, and knew the sights if those eyes of hers were different, that is to say, beautiful, she herself would be different (Morrison, 46). Pecola is finally granted her overwhelming want for blue eyes. When she is finally granted her wish for blue eyes, she receives it in a perverse and darkly ironic form. • 28. My Search For Going To College What do you mean I cannot live with my parents for the rest of my life? So you mean to tell me that I actually have to become an adult? . These have been the thoughts plaguing my mind for the past four years and now that my time is up, I get to do something about them. My main problem with going to college is being away from my home, my family, and my friends. I knew that if I were to pick the wrong college, I would be running back to my mom in a weeks time. Finding the right college is a universal challenge for every upcoming college student, but when I found Baylor University I knew it was my new home. My hunt for the perfect college started my freshmen year of high school. During that time in my life, I felt there was a big weight on my shoulders to be successful in life. Since picking the right college is a big part of being successful, I was feeling overwhelmed. There are about 1,400 colleges in the United States and I had to narrow that down to a top five, frantic was an understatement about how I was feeling. Taking a step back to look at the big picture, I decided to evaluate what I was looking for in a college; I came up with the following list: have my desired major (Astrophysics), be far away from home (but not too far), and to live in a big city. Applying my new set of criteria, I now only had 3 colleges to choose from: University of Texas at Austin, Rice University, and Baylor University. I gave my contact information to each of them and in time I had a scheduled visit to Baylor University. When I arrived on the Baylor campus I immediately felt at home. I had the honor of attending the Baylor Premier, which acts like a huge campus tour for everyone that attends the seminar. Everybody was so genuinely nice and enthusiastic about me being there, I got the feeling that was where I belonged. I could see myself walking the campus with my newly found friends on the way to our The Atomic Theory 101 class. Although I have a tendency of letting my head float in the sky, I had to snap myself out of my dreamland and back into reality to remember that I still had two other options for my perfect college. As she disconnects from her physical obligation, she seeks her simplification as just a bone, able to return to its origin, free of sin. We see that how the myth has influenced the society and how badly it has affected the speaker that she carries a sense of guilt for having a female body. I attended the eleven o clock service at the Greenville campus, which was located in the TD Convention Center. Since this was not the main campus, the sermon had to be watched on the screen. However, the music was live. This service had a casual and contemporary feel. Although this church is Southern Baptist, it did not have the typical Baptist feel. Everything seemed to be more casual, modern, and laid back, especially before and after the service. Interestingly, even though this service was very modern and contemporary, there was still a great lack of diversity. Their staff, volunteers, band, and pastors were very diverse, but the people attending the church were less diverse. The general demographic was made up of Caucasian families as well as many Caucasian teenagers and young adults. There were a few African Americans (the worship leader was African American), but overall there was a lack of Hispanics, Asians, and African Americans. There were certainly not very many older adults either. Interestingly, in addition to the modern atmosphere, all of the people were very casually dressed. Most of the men had shorts and t shirts on and the women mostly had pants or shorts on as well. I do not think that there is anything wrong with this, and Newspring even states that they want you to come however you are and however you are dressed, but this is an important observation that added to the culture of the church. ... • 31. Pope John Paul II s Eugene Letter Fr. Joseph Byerley used scripture, St. Pope John Paul II s Apostolic letter on the meaning of human suffering and practical examples to answer the age old question of why God allows good people to suffer. I will attempt to give a summary of his talk here, but will preface that this is just a summary and does not do justice to the clarity, depth and beauty of his talk. He started by defining the word Redemption, which means to buy back or ransom. Human suffering, when united with Christ s, can remit punishment due to sin. This is not connected to forgiveness. Divine justice requires that the original goodness which existed prior to the offense must be restored. We may be forgiven of our sins, but there is still damage which must be repaired. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It is a real and true participation in the loving sacrifice of Christ that earned our redemption. We participate in that. John Paul II said, Thus to share in the sufferings of Christ is at the same time to suffer for the Kingdom of God. In the eyes of the just God, before his judgement, those who share in the suffering of Christ become worthy of His kingdom....Christ has led us into His kingdom through His suffering, and also through suffering, those surrounded by the mystery of Christ s redemption, become mature enough to enter into His kingdom. It s not that redemption is not complete. We know that redemption is complete, but we say that redemption is also continually open to all love that is expressed through human suffering. Suffering can be offered up for others as an act of love. But as St. Catherine of Siena said, we must not go out looking for suffering, as in and of itself, it is not good. Enough is sent our way, without searching it out. Only when it is consumed in love, can it be converted to good. • 32. The Mayan Civilization And The Maya Empire The Mayan civilization or the Maya Empire, centered in the tropical lowlands of what is now Guatemala, reached the peak of its power and influence around the sixth century A.D. The Maya excelled at agriculture, pottery, hieroglyph writing, calendar making and mathematics, and left behind an astonishing amount of impressive architecture and symbolic artwork. Most of the great stone cities of the Maya were abandoned by A.D. 900. The Maya civilization was one of the most dominant indigenous societies of Mesoamerica. Unlike other scattered indigenous populations of Mesoamerica, the Maya were centered in one geographical block covering all of the Yucatan Peninsula and modern day Guatemala; Belize and parts of the Mexican states of Tabasco and Chiapas; and the western part of Honduras and El Salvador. This concentration showed that the Maya remained relatively secure from invasion by other Mesoamerican peoples. Within that expanse, the Maya lived in three separate sub areas with distinct environmental and cultural differences: the northern Maya lowlands on the Yucatan Peninsula; the southern lowlands in the Peten district of northern Guatemala and adjacent portions of Mexico, Belize and western Honduras; and the southern Maya highlands, in the mountainous region of southern Guatemala. The earliest Maya settlements date to around 1800 B.C., or the beginning of what is called the Preclassic or Formative Period. The Middle Preclassic Period also saw the rise of the first major ... • 34. The Role Of The Senate In The Roman Empire This extensive system of administration underwent a change when the Republic transitioned into an Empire. Then an emperor was at the top and below him came the patrician class, which held the administrative power. An example that shows the role of the Senate is: Senators during the Republic held the greatest power in the Roman state. They had many responsibilities, such as governing of all of Rome s finances, making critical decisions about deploying the military, guiding all the diplomatic missions and engaging in commerce or investing in the trade. (Roman Republic and Empire VOL.3 / Pg. 198) As it can be seen from the quote, the Senate was an institution that ran the whole Republic. Its social status was immense. They provided an effective ruling of the state and although, they didn t create the laws (consuls did), the senators ensured consistency, which was a needed element in a democracy. This ensured that the consuls and senators had their own position, and only one can rule over the other. Later, with the gradual establishment of the Empire, the role of the Senate weakened. Still, during that time the emperor sometimes looked up to the Senate for making appropriate decisions, concerning the empire. Another example shows the complex system of Cursus Honorum. • 39. The Book Outliers The Story Of Success By Joe Flom The story of Joe Flom incorporates many aspects of the first half of the book Outliers The Story of Success. Malcolm Gladwell uses comparisons of other families with similarities of Flom s story to demonstrate why he is successful. The story of Flom not only has what the previous chapters present but also some new concepts. At the beginning of the chapter Gladwell tells the reader about Flom s success and then jumps backwards to explain how it occurred. He also explains why some people thrive while others do not such as lacking a certain skill or background. The first lesson of this chapter is the importance of culture. Gladwell tells the story of one of Flom s classmates, Alexander Bickel. Doing this shows a meaningful connection between everyone that was a Jewish immigrant and just of a single person. This is shown by both stories being similar in the protagonist, apart from the end result, and the denial of a first rate law firm. Therefore it is seen as an impediment, but it is a golden opportunity (124). Because Flom was forced to start his own firm or join a second rate one, he chose to join an up and coming new firm which he then elevates to the top. This leap to the top happened because he was part of a newer firm. Gladwell writes about this portion as a barrier for Flom intended to have the reader feel sorry for Flom. Santa Anna led the Army on a campaign into Texas territory. The Alamo, originally named Mision San Antonio de Valero, was a church first and foremost.
