A thriller follows a protagonist battling an antagonist to restore order after equilibrium is disrupted. Conventions include quick cuts, shadows, tense music, and changing shot angles. The protagonist is often brave while the antagonist seeks revenge. Cinematography uses close-ups of the protagonist and quick, hidden shots of the antagonist. Editing uses jump cuts and cross-cutting to build suspense. Music and sound add tension. Mise-en-scene establishes the theme through location, low-key lighting, costumes, and composition.

Animation is created through rapidly displaying a sequence of images to create the illusion of movement. This can be done through various methods, but is most commonly seen in motion pictures and video programs. There are different types of animation including full animation using detailed drawings, limited animation using more stylized drawings, rotoscoping which traces live-action movement, live-action/animation combining drawn characters with live footage, stop-motion manipulating real-world objects, 2D animation created digitally on a computer, and 3D animation which is digitally modeled and manipulated. Animation has many applications and benefits to various fields.

Motion graphics are pieces of digital footage or animation that create the illusion of motion or rotation and are usually combined with audio for use in multimedia projects. Motion graphics are usually displayed via electronic media technology, but may also be displayed via manual powered technology (e.g. thaumatrope, the phenakistoscope, stroboscope, zoetrope, praxinoscope, flip book). The term distinguishes still graphics from those with a transforming appearance over time, without over-specifying the form. While any form of experimental or abstract animation can be called motion graphics, the term typically more explicitly refers to the commercial application of animation and effects to video, film, TV, and interactive applications.

Due to their independent nature and limited resources, short films typically have low budgets that stick to one or two locations and a small cast, giving the films an arty feel. Short films appeal to a niche audience because of their creative formats, brevity, and lesser known nature compared to feature films.

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in Education
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

- 3. This week You will be learning about storyboarding techniques before applying them to create your own storyboard. You could also begin to understand the role a storyboard plays in a successful production
- 4. By the end of today, you MUST be able to identify the information required to create a storyboard SHOULD be able to use illustration techniques to begin creating a storyboard for your video COULD explain the importance of storyboards to planning and production.
- 6. Storyboard What is a storyboard?
- 7. A storyboard is a sequence of drawings, typically with some directions and dialogue, representing the shots planned for a movie or television production
- 8. What do we use storyboards for? The director and cinematographer will use them to plan • how each shot will look (called the composition or framing), • and to devise how the sequence of shots will flow.
- 9. Anatomy of a storyboard What information do we get from a storyboard?
- 10. The drawn box represents the frame You need to know your aspect ratio as this will determine the shape of the frame
- 11. Camera movements are shown using arrows which describe the move, eg/ pan
- 12. Some shots will be drawn over more than 1 frame where there is complicated action. Instead of cut it will say CONT’D
- 13. When it cuts to a new shot it says ---- CUT
- 14. All your shots should be numbered, eg/ 1, 2, 3, 4, These numbers will also be on your shot list / shooting schedule
- 15. Shots that are drawn over more than one frame should be numbered and lettered eg/ 1A, 1B, 1C etc…
- 16. The storyboard will have brief descriptions of the action unfolding in the shot.
- 17. When do we create storyboards? Storyboards are part of our pre-production planning as we will need them on set.
- 18. Who needs storyboards on set - Director - Assistant Director (1st AD) - Director Of Photography (also known as a cinematographer) - Camera operator - Lighting technician
- 19. Director / Assistant Director Why might the director need the storyboard
- 20. Director / Assistant Director To check that the camera operators have framed each shot in the way they want and to check that they don’t miss any shots out during filming.
- 21. Director Of Photography (DOP) Why would the DOP need the storyboard?
- 22. Director Of Photography (DOP) To plan the lighting design for each shot and check that camera operators were getting the right shots.
- 23. Camera Operator Why will the camera operator need the storyboard?
- 24. Camera Operator To check they have framed the shot in the way that the DOP & director want
- 25. Lighting Technician Why will the lighting technie need to a copy of the storyboard?
- 26. Lighting Technician Lighting technicians will have to recreate specific lighting styles to maintain continuity (or for effect) so it helps to have a visual aid of how the lighting of each shot is meant to look.
- 27. Task You will need to create a storyboard for you video. Using the template on Moodle begin to draw your storyboards. What information do you need to communicate to the viewer?
