Short Film
Storyboarding
Last week
What did we do last week?
This week
You will be learning about storyboarding
techniques before applying them to
create your own storyboard.
You could also begin to understand the
role a storyboard plays in a successful
production
By the end of today, you
MUST be able to identify the information
required to create a storyboard
SHOULD be able to use illustration
techniques to begin creating a
storyboard for your music video
COULD explain the importance of
storyboards to planning and production.
Storyboard
What is a storyboard?
What is a storyboard?
It is a plan of the film,
shot by shot, in
drawings.
Each frame of the
storyboard is a
different shot.
The whole video will
be storyboarded out
before filming.
It is visual planning
What do we use storyboards for?
The director and cinematographer will
use them to plan
• Plan how each shot will look
(called composition or framing)
• Plan how the sequence of shots
will flow.
• Plan what audio we might need
Working in pairs
Annotate on the storyboard in front of
you what information the artist is giving
you.
You have 2 minutes.
Feedback
What information is the
storyboard trying to convey?
The drawn box (the
frame) represents
the cameras shot.
Camera
movements are
shown using
arrows which
describe the
movement
eg/ pan
When it cuts to a
new shot it says
---- CUT
Some shots will
be drawn over
more than 1
frame where
there is
complicated
action.
Instead of cut it
will say CONT’D
All your shots
should be
numbered, eg/
1, 2, 3, 4,
These numbers
will also be on
your shot list /
shooting
schedule
Shots that are
drawn over more
than one frame
should be
numbered and
lettered
eg/ 1A, 1B, 1C
etc…
The storyboard
will have brief
descriptions of
the action for
each shot.
A brief description
of any audio in the
scene
When do we create storyboards?
Storyboards are part of our
pre-production planning as
we will need them on set.
Who needs storyboards on set
- Director
- Assistant Director (1st AD)
- Director Of Photography (also
known as a cinematographer)
- Camera operator
- Lighting technician
Director / Assistant Director
Why might the director need the storyboard
Director / Assistant Director
To check that the camera operators have
framed each shot in the way they want and
to check that they don’t miss any shots out
during filming.
Director Of Photography (DOP)
Why would the DOP need the
storyboard?
Director Of Photography (DOP)
To plan the lighting design for each shot
and check that camera operators were
getting the right shots.
Camera Operator
Why will the camera operator need the
storyboard?
Camera Operator
To check they have framed the shot in
the way that the DOP & director want
Lighting Technician
Why will the lighting
technie need to a copy
of the storyboard?
Lighting Technician
Lighting technicians will
have to recreate
specific lighting styles to
maintain continuity (or
for effect) so it helps to
have a visual aid of how
the lighting of each shot
is meant to look.
Task
You will need to create a storyboard for
you short film.
Using the template on Moodle begin to
draw your storyboards.
What information do you need to
communicate to the viewer?
