Essay about A Critical Visual Analysis of a Work of Art
A Critical Visual Analysis of a Work of Art The piece of art that I chose to do my critical visual
analysis on will be the Birds of Paradise, painted by Frits van Eeden, in 1997. (Birds of Paradise)
Eeden was born in Tilburg, Holland, in March 1944 and grew up in The Hague. (Frits Van Eeden) For
the Birds of Paradise he used acrylic paint on canvas. This piece of art is located in the Evans Library,
at Florida Tech, in Melbourne, FL. When I look at the picture I see birds helping each other, they seem
to have harmony. One can get an impression of how people can co exist with one another. The Birds
of Paradise is a beautiful and bright color bird. They represent joyfulness and paradise. In this picture,
they look like cranes. I don t ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Eeden made the birds in his piece of art to look three dimensional. When you have three dimensional
shapes, the results seem to be some kind of form. In order to have form in art you have to have height,
width, and depth to enhance the texture, color, and tone in a given piece of art. The overall
organization also implies the form. With this piece of art, Eeden took the six birds which are standing
and organized them to appear symmetrically to be in a particular pattern. He put the birds in a
sculptural kind of design to make them look three dimensional. One of the birds seems to be picking
something off of the bird beside him. They seem to be caring for each other. Eeden has used
geometrical shapes to draw the birds. The curves of the birds are simple. The background of this piece
of art shows that it is a sunny, calm day with a strip of blue sky above the birds. The ground seems to
nonexistent. You can t see where the bird s feet meet the ground or maybe they are standing in water.
The quality given to a piece of art work is through the use of light. When asked about light in art they
are asking about the sun rays, candles, moons, flames, and many other sources of light. Artist use light
to create contrast in a given space. In Eeden s picture, Birds of Paradise, the birds are in the light. He
is demonstrating the type of environment the birds are living in. This explains why you can see the
bird s feet because the

Government does not have My College s Back
Last week, while having my morning coffee, I overheard a conversation between a college lecturer
and a well known secretary in The Ministry of Finance. I was about to return upstairs in my office
when I observed the secretary pushed forward, looking the lecturer directly in her eyes emphatically
and aggressively said, You academics just don t get it...the government aint gat no money to take care
no university. I relaxed in my seat as the conversation between the two raged on. This same discussion
is but a fragment of a national discussion that has been ongoing in this country for many years, and the
debate is whether or not The Bahamas is economically, financially and socially developed enough to
maintaina university. This situation has become a worrying problem indeed.According to her article,
We Do Not Need A University , Ms. Pam Burnside discusses the issue of The Bahamas being a small
independent nation who wants to ameliorate its tertiary level institution with inadequate financial
resources. She further explains that the Bahamas is too greedy and is ashamed of the College that we
already have in existence. In addition, she argues that The Bahamas does not need a university and
simply cannot afford it. In response to Burnside s arguments, I most certainly agree with her. The
College of The Bahamas is not well equipped to become a university as it lacks a few vital
components that need to be addressed urgently: Financial resources,Infrastructure and Staffing.

The Courtship of Inanna and Durmuzi
The Courtship of Inanna and Dumuzi, a hymn written in 2800 BC, details the courtship between the
goddess Inanna and her consort, Dumuzi. Shown above, is a conversation between them that gives an
account of a society reliant on developing agriculture where plants and animals are produced. This
section also contains a very important analogy for human reproduction and agricultural reproduction
that gives the reader a unique perspective into the past and the male female interactions that existed.
Throughout the whole hymn there are a very repetitive patterns and descriptions. The author s heavy
use of alliteration with words such as poured, plants, placed, grain, and womb are very distinct. Which
is the most obvious in the lines I poured out plants from my womb./I placed plants before him,/I
poured out plants before him . Since this is a translated hymn we do not know how exactly this
appears in the original, but because of the words chosen by the translator we can assume this section
there was originally an alliteration and the translator has tried to express it. Another pattern that
evolved through out the whole piece is the author comparing agricultural production to sex and female
reproductive organs. In this passage it is very obvious in the lines I poured out plants from my
womb...I poured out grain from my womb . This metaphor is repeated so often in the passage, and the
piece overall, that it is the most significant pattern and it lends a very interesting insight into

The USA used the Eagle as their unit, and Germany introduced the new gold mark, while Canada
adopted a dual system based on both the American Gold Eagle and the British Gold Sovereign.
Australia and New Zealand adopted the British gold standard, as did the British West Indies, while
Newfoundland was the only British Empire territory to introduce its own gold coin as a standard.
Royal Mint branches were established in Sydney, New South Wales, Melbourne, Victoria, and Perth,
Western Australia for the purposes of minting gold sovereigns from Australia s rich gold deposits. The
Gold Exchange Standard Towards the end of the 19th century some of the remaining silver standard
countries began to peg their silver coin units to the gold standards of the United Kingdom or the USA.
In 1898,British India pegged the silver rupee to the pound sterling at a fixed rate of 1s 4d, while in
1906, the Straits Settlements adopted a gold exchange standard against the pound sterling with the
silver Straits dollar being fixed at 2s 4d. Meanwhile at the turn of the century, the Philippines pegged
the silver Peso/dollar to the US dollar at 50 cents. A similar pegging at 50 cents occurred at around the
same time with the silver Peso of Mexico and the silver Yen of Japan. When Siam adopted a gold
exchange standard in 1908, this left only China and Hong Kong on the silver standard. The gold
specie standard ended in the United Kingdom and the rest of the British Empire at the outbreak of

Does the Brutal Truth in Sonnet 130 and a Beautiful Young...
Does the brutal truth in Shakespeare s Sonnet 130 and Swift s A beautiful Young Nymph going to bed
, take away from the beauty of the two poems.
Beauty and aesthetics can be defined as Nothing more nor less, than sensitivity to the sublime and the
beautiful and an aversion to the ordinary and ugly , this means that beauty can be absolutely anything
which is beautiful as long as it is not ugly or ordinary, this may seem harsh, much like the poems by
William Shakespeare and Jonathan Swift. In both poems; Sonnet 130 by William Shakespeare and A
beautiful young nymph going to bed by Jonathan Swift, aesthetic beauty is explored in a brutal and
honest light. Shakespeare s Sonnet 130 tells the story of a man describing his mistress ... Show more

It may seem romantic of Shakespeare to have kept his lover a secret, but we must remain aware that
he did have a wife at home in Stratford upon Avon. The possible occupation of Shakespeare s Dark
Lady gives a contextual link to Swift s poem; A Beautiful Young Nymph Going to Bed , as the role of
prostitution is explored in this poem and there are suggestions that this was the role of the Dark Lady.
The purpose of satire is to show what is bad or weak about something or someone through humour
and exaggeration. Jonathan Swift is known as The Godfather of Satire , Swift himself defined satire
as; satire is a sort of glass, wherein beholders do generally discover everybody s faces but their own .
Here, Swift explains how everyone who reads his satire will see how he is mocking everyone else,
apart from themselves. The use of satire gives A beautiful young nymph going to bed complexity
when looking at the meaning, similarly to Sonnet 130, making it eligible for the canon of English
Literature, as one of the requirements to be eligible is that the work has ...complexity... . Swift
published A beautiful young nymph going to bed in 1734, the poem is satirical, and it satirise women s
artificiality; Takes off her artificial hair and their use of the male gaze. He wrote the poem in the 18th
century, when around 63,000 prostitutes were working in London, a terrible time, as prostitutes
became more popular and more common, sexually transmitted

James Baldwin s Harlem Riots Essay
Collecting the Harlem Riots
?It would have been better to have left the plate glass as it had been and the goods lying in the stores.
It would have been better, but it would have also have been intolerable, for Harlem needed something
to smash?
This quote by James Baldwin pertains to his relevant thoughts on the Harlem Riots of 1943. A copy of
Newsweek from August 9,1943 described the riot in great detail, ?Within a half hour Harlem?s
hoodlums were on the march. Windows of pawnshops and liquor and grocery stores were smashed
and looted. The Negroes began wielding knives and the police their guns? Thousands of police

curfew delivered by Mayor LaGuardia. The Mayor also halted vehicle traffic except for service
vehicles until everything had calmed down about two days after the riots. Stores closed either due to
damage or due to fear of repetition of damage, and they did not reopen until about two days after as
well. The Mayor also enacted prohibition throughout Harlem during and immediately following the
riots (NY Times 8). La Guardia also brought emergency food supplies to relieve burned out shops and
houses, which gained him popularity among the black population. The amount of damage the riots
entailed not only affected the people and city of Harlem, but the race relations all over the country.
The Harlem Riots had a definitive start, but the build up to rioting varied among the sources used.
According to an article in the NY Times on August 5, 1943, ?The City Council who charged on
Tuesday that Harlem had been starved of park and playground facilities? The City Council denied the
charge that inadequate policing was responsible for the disorder.? This article stated that Harlem
lacked the parks and recreation needs of its people and therefore caused the riot, along with the fact
that police did not handle the situation correctly. Another article in the NY Times quoted Rev. Dr.
Samuel Henry about the rioting in Harlem, ?Heightened suggestibility due to mass living

Henry Allison s Two Aspect View
Henry Allison s two aspect view differs profoundly from the two world view by introducing epistemic
conditions. For Allison, the difference between appearances and things in themselves is epistemic
rather than ontological. Rather than reflecting two separate realms, phenomena and noumena reflect
the structure of the mind.21 The notable distinction here is that rather than the identification of the
appearance with the representation, the appearance is associated with the thing in itself.22 Allison
argues that Kant s conditions of human knowledge should be taken as epistemic conditions rather than
logical conditions.23 Allison defines an epistemic condition as a simply a condition that is necessary
for an object or objective state of affairs.24 These epistemic then turn out to be space, time and the
categories; it can be known a priori that every object is structured in terms of these conditions.25 By
introducing epistemic conditions, Allison is capable of separating the two aspect view from the two
world view. These epistemic conditions must be distinguished from metaphysical, ontological and
psychological conditions.26 The psychological conditions are defined as a disposition of the mind
which governs belief acquisition.27 The prime example of this would be Hume s customs or habit as
features of the mind.28 Epistemic conditions differ from them by reflecting the structure mind but
differ in that they are objectivating; psychological conditions reflect how the mind

Hutu In Rwanda
Geographical Location
The Hutu, which is also called the Bahutu, is a Bantu ethnic group. The Hutu are inhabitants of the
African Great Lakes arena of Africa. The Hutu primarily reside in Rwanda, Burundi, and eastern part
of Democratic Republic of the Congo. Approximately 84% of Rwandans are Hutu and 85% of
Burundians are Hutu (Gwin, 2014). The remainder of the population is the Tutsi and the Twa. The
Hutu has the greatest population of all four of the central ethnic groups located in Rwanda and
Burundi. At a whopping 13.9 million people, the Hutu remains the largest social group in Rwanda,
Burundi, east of the Democratic of the Congo, and Tanzania (Gwin, 2014). According to Encyclopedia
Britannica, the Hutu move abroad to the Great Lake region all the way from West Africa during the
Bantu expansion. The Bantu expansion was a milieunum where people migrated across Africa. This
consisted of the dispersion of language and knowledge amongst neighboring communities. Rwanda

research. However, one day in class we read allowed our topics and our peers were allowed to

Guns Germs And Steel Discussion Questions
1. Yali s question is Why is it that you white people developed so much cargo and brought it to New
Guinea, but we black people had little cargo of our own? In a broader sense, why did some things
progress in some areas, but not in others?
2. The first consideration Diamond discusses is that just because something happened and that it
would have happened anyway, it does not make the act good or just. The second consideration is that
the most powerful region, in this case, western Europe, should not be the only one talked about
because ideas and practices that are now or were at that time integrated into their culture were not
necessarily developed by them, but by other culture that imported their beliefs into European culture.

This led to a growth in population because now there was no restriction on how often you could have
children, just how many you can care for. This led to a greater population density which ultimately
started civilizations.
8. One factor that contributed to the transition from hunting gathering to farming was the decline in
the availability of wild foods to gather. A second factor was an increased availability of wild plants. A
third factor was the development of technologies that food production would later depend upon. A
fourth factor was the link between the rise in population density and the rise in food production. A
fifth factor was food producers could force hunter gatherers to leave or kill them off because of the
great numbers they had.
9. One advantage the Fertile Crescent had in food production was that it had a Mediterranean climate
that was mild and wet in the winter and hot and dry in the long summers. This allows plants to grow
quickly after the dry season when the rain comes back. A second advantage was many plants there
were already very abundant and very productive. A third advantage was that it had a lot of
hermaphrodite plants that would almost always pollinate themselves and occasionally cross pollinate
which allowed a little more variety. A fourth advantage was that the area had different levels of
elevation which allowed a variety of plants to grow in a small

Equal Rights Amendment Summary
Xiaomeng, I really enjoyed reading your post and completely agree with your point of view on the
matter of the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA). The 1920 s opened the door to the idea of the ERA and
individuals such as Alice Paul and the National Women s Party paved the way to secure constitutional
rights for women. The members of the Women s Party focused their time and energy on the ERA to
help in guaranteeing women constitutional protection from discrimination. Paul spent all her life
advocating for these rights and well as other issues affecting women during the 20s. Paul considered
herself a conservative but her vision for women had always gone beyond her own conservatism.
Shortly before her death, she was quoted as saying, I think if

Epicurus s Philosophy Of Happiness
This short episode is about the philosopher Epicurus, who was born on the year 341 years BC, in the
island of Samos, and his philosophy of happiness. It begins with some of Epicurus thoughts: that we
can all be happy, but we look in the wrong places, and that we don t need to feel guilty about wanting
to have a pleasurable life. Botton starts with the idea that most people have of happiness, which is that
of having money in order to buy whatever they want. Through the episode he will counter this idea
with Epicurean philosophy.
Epicurus had a lot of pleasures (sex, laughter, beauty), but happiness is more tricky than that. He
thought pleasure is the most important thing in life, but he was not luxurious. He lived in a simple
house, wore basic ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
His thought was that you your friends should be lifelong companions. And that you should never eat
alone and when you eat, you should rather watch with whom you eat, than what you eat.
Freedom He and his friends left Athens. To be free one has to be financially independent,
economically self sufficient, not having to answer to a boss. They lived a simple life, not caring about
having as much as other, and thus they were free from what others thought.
Analyzed life Time off from the noise of the commercial world, to reflect about our worries. Our
anxieties would be lessened if we gave ourselves the time to think them through. We need a space to
quietly think about our lives.
Botton continues by showing how if you are denied money and have 3 goods: friends, analyzed life,
self sufficient, you can still be happy, whereas if you had the money and lacked these three things,
then you wouldn t. He asks, if happiness is so simple, why aren t more of us actually happy? Epicurus
blamed this on advertisement. We shop too much because we are confused about what we need and
advertisement associates products with what we do

Four Ways To Amend Constitution In The United States
There are four ways to amend Constitution. One of the methods, also the most common method, is
when the House of Representatives and Senate both must vote on the proposed amendment. According
to the Constitution, for an amendment to pass it is required that the House of Representatives and
Senate (which make up Congress) must pass it with a two thirds majority. If it is approved by the two
thirds, then the proposed amendment is sent to the state legislatures for approval. It is required for the
three fourths of all state legislatures to approve the amendment. If it is approved, then the proposed
amendment becomes ratified and added to the Constitution. Second way to amend Constitution is
when proposed amendment approved with a two thirds vote

Skin Breakdown Analysis
Flynn stated that Nurses have a major role to play assessing and preventing skin breakdown...
Incontinence poses particular risk factors as both urine and faeces have detrimental effects on the skin.
This can lead to incontinence associated dermatitis (IAD) and pressure ulceration. (Flynn, 2011,
p.553). One of the basic skills that nurses have is to be able to provide appropriate skin care to
patients. This article discusses the some of the factors that can cause skin breakdown on patients.

there was a decrease in number of IAD and increase in healing when skin barrier cleanser and

transparent, good adherence, applicable to intact and injured skin and easy to apply. It also mentioned
a dimethicone containing product as skin barrier that is more comfortable and contains high skin

We can understand why she became this well known person if she did not have support or a normal
childhood. There are seven major perspectives that can help us understand someone s life and their
outcomes. I personally believe that with Marilyn Monroe s life, Psychodynamic Perspective is a way
someone can understand how things went. It explains how the roles of someone s life experiences, like
childhood, can affect the rest of their life. As I said before, she did not have a typical childhood. She
had a rough life before the age of 16. Not having a steady home to grow up in could make it hard on a
person, especially a child. Those are the years we develop most as humans, and create a foundation on
how our lives may become. With her life, it could cause a sense of misplacement or even change her
views of affection. This could alter the way someone views affection and what they think is normal
compared to others. In Monroe s life, she was abandoned from any reality or normalcy in her life. She
did not get that affection and that is an important part of life. She then had three marriages that did not
last that long, and that shows that even when she did try to have a normal life and find that true love, it
just did not work well for her. This could be one of many reasons why she turned to alcoholism or

The Pros And Cons Of Nazi Concentration Camps

World War II is one of the most imfamous periods in human history. The world is still shocked today
by the horrific idea of the Nazi concentration camps from 1933 1945, but what many people dont
know is what awful, unimaginable things went on behind closed doors in these terrible places. The
Nazi SS doctors used the unknowing, innocent prisoners in these camps to experiment on for their
own personal pleasure and amusement. One of these infamous Doctors was Dr. Sigmund Rascher, a
German SS doctor during the Nazi regime. He experimented on the prisoners with the consent of
Heinrich Himmler, the leader of the the Schutzstaffel also known as the SS. From 1941 to 1944,
Rascher conducted some of the textbook ethical trespasses of Berlin s human experimentation regime .

Walmart s Reputation For Unfair Labor Practices
Walmart is the one of the biggest retailers in the United States and one of the foremost and influential
corporations in America. It has become one of America s most successful retail chains by offering
everyday goods at low prices for middle and lower class families. Even with all of its financial
success, the company cannot open a store without dealing with an abundance of protest groups.
Walmart always overcomes these groups, but nonetheless there is always opposition against them.
Walmart has had a reputation for unfair labor practices by refusing unionization, offering really low
wages, and discrimination. The protest groups defend local store owners, the environment, employee
salaries, and discrimination against various minority groups. Walmart displays an image of being
charitable and giving back to the community, but they are responsible for unjust and discriminating
actions in the United States. To maintain its low cost strategy, Walmart has been involved in ethically
questionable practices, including gender discrimination in promotion and pay. While the Supreme
Court recently ruled against class certification of 1.5 million women in the Dukes v. Walmart case due
to a lack of proof that Walmart operated under a general policy of discrimination , there is much
evidence that shows that gender discrimination is still a problem rooted in the culture of Walmart,
despite gender neutral policies (Biskupic, 2011). During the 1950 s and 60 s in northwest Arkansas, a

Green Design
John A. Walker argues that designers must undertake an ecological role. Arguably, humanity is re
designing the planet Earth every hour of every day, either deliberately by rational planning or
inadvertently with billions of unconsidered actions, and in the main ruining it. We all carry a
responsibility for the destruction and therefore we all need to mend our ways, but of course some
groups within society have more power than others to take remedial action: engineers, architects,
planners and designers for instance. If they became pro active rather than re active, they could play a
crucial role: their skills, imagination and ingenuity could help preserve the planet for future
generations. Green or ecological design is one positive ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
And on May 12 this year the Design Museum held a well attended conference entitled Green Design
Beyond the Bandwagon? which included speakers from Zanussi, Volvo, New Consumer Magazine,
Design Week and the Labour Party. An Ecological Design Association has been founded in Britain
with the intention of encouraging training, professional standards, product testing and ecodesign in
general. In terms of transportation, green design ranged from changes in the engines of conventional
cars to take unleaded petrol and to reduce fuel consumption, to Anthony Howard s Africar (a cheap,
wooden vehicle designed for Africa). Volvo in Sweden renewed its long term commitment to making
environmentally friendly cars and buses, while Renault in France designed an electric car. Modifying
existing vehicles is a step in the right direction but it does nothing to limit the ever growing number of
cars on the roads. If population growth has to be limited, so does the growth in cars. Many greens
would prefer to walk and cycle or to use public transport. Once the will exists to improve and expand
the latter, many more opportunities for the green transport designer will occur. Fashion also witnessed
changes during the 1980s. Anita Roddick s chain of Bodyshops was highly successful in selling
natural cosmetics with minimum packaging; campaigns against the use of animal furs for clothes cut

Efficient Society or Vacant Humanity
Extended Definition
Preventing the wasteful use of a particular resource is one of the definitions of the word efficient. The
most common thought when people hear the word efficient is that when something is efficient it is
better than something that by comparison is not as efficient. Now we have gas efficient cars, energy
efficient appliances and as many highly efficiently people would say we are working to have a more
efficient society. What is the cost of more efficiency, in many things of course the more efficient the
better, with more energy efficient cars and appliances we are saving our planet reducing car emissions
make for cleaner air that we all breathe and will make us less reliant on fuel and other natural
resources. Can a real value or cost be put on the human mind and spirit, what happens to people when
they are set aside or determined to be of little or no use, what happens when people begin to question
their own worth in the world.
In Jeremy Rifkin s book Time Wars includes the reading selection The Efficient Society he is
analytical in his explanation of what is being considered to be an efficient society. In the critical
analysis he details the time management scenarios that are addressed to make more efficient workers.
Corporations need to produce more work from each of its workers and the way that the companies
take the time to measure

Parental Neglect By Roald Dahl s Matilda And Neil Gaiman...
Child abuse, in any form, is cause for outrage. This makes the question of whether neglect, benign or
otherwise, is better than violence hard to consider. According to Canada s Public Health Agency,
parental neglect, at 34% of cases, is the most commonly reported form of child maltreatment (31). In
Roald Dahl s Matilda and Neil Gaiman s Coraline, parental neglect is contrasted against violence as
both are shown to be psychologically detrimental to a child, while the impact of these imperfect
parents is able to help a child redefine their sense of self.
The overt neglect of her prodigal intellect experienced by Matilda leaves her feeling misunderstood
and an outsider in her family which differs from the perceived neglect which leaves Coraline
struggling with her sense of self. Born to parents described as gormless (Dahl 4), Matilda is both
blessed and cursed with a prodigal intellect. Causing Matilda to crave knowledge, it is her intellect
that leads her at the age of four years and three months (9), to defy her parents and everyday walk to
the library. Matilda admits to this neglect to Mrs. Phelps, the librarian, when she tells her of her
mother, She doesn t encourage reading books. Nor does my father (10). With this statement Matilda
shows how her parents have neglected to foster her intellect. Matilda s eagerness to digest
information, and the fact that the only book in the Wormwood home is her mother s cookbook,
elaborates how she differs from her parents.

The S WB interim team appointed by the Mayor has installed the most ridiculous solution for 25 cycle
power.
The equipment that they have installed is jeopardizing not only the lives and safety of the S WB
workers but also the residents around the plant.
The refurbishing of turbine # 4 was the worst task that has been taken by S WB. The program manager
CH2M Hill has done criminal negligence in its refurbishing. The parts that were supposed to have
been replaced with new parts has been not been installed. Instead the Program Manager CH2M Hill
has allowed the contractor IMC to clean the existing parts and reinstalled them. Nelson Engineering is

running the turbine # 4 prematurely and almost killed the worker present around the turbine # 4 room.
Luckily the main breaker was off otherwise everyone present in that room would have been dead. The
switchgear caught fire with a small blast. Despite their negligence now the switch gear will be

Essay about 17th Century Culture
Many important pieces of literature were produced during the 17th century. One of the most
prominent literary voices in history was William Shakespeare. He wrote and produced plays many
famous tragedies during the early 1600 s such as Twelfth Night, Measure for Measure, Othello,
Hamlet, Macbeth, and King Lear which many believe it was one of his best. Miguel de Cervantes
became a legendary author when he penned the novel, Don Quixote de la Mancha. This lengthy and
popular story is considered a valuable work not only to literature buffs, but also to those interested in
understanding what life was like in Spain during the reign of Kings Phillip II and III (Taylor 101). On

There is little to argue about when suggesting that the Baroque period of art and architecture during
the 1600 s was characterized by a positive, vigorous, and passionate style (Gerdes 253), enveloped in
lavish splendor, glorifying the imagery of highborn aristocrats, religion, and homoeroticism. The
theatrical, grandiose, and ornate style was heavily influenced by Christianity, life, love, symbolism,
allegory, and morbidity. The artist Michelangel Merisi da Caravaggio a leading artist during this
period used a combination of religious scenes in everyday locales filled with rough looking common
people (Kleiner 549) along with the intensity of the dramatic Baroque passion for richness in color
and texture. One of Caravaggio s most famous pieces of art was the Entombment of Christ, and David
with the Head of Goliath, for which he painted his own head as the victim, with blood drips from his
freshly severed neck, sparing nobody the gory facts of decapitation (Harris 49). The disturbed genius
was also interested in the fresco painting of the Renaissance and this is perhaps what enticed
Caravaggio to paint the Creation of Adam on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. The history of the
Baroque period cannot be discussed further without mentioning the Dutch artist Rembrandt
Harmenszoon van Rijn, whose Baroque paintings rose to universal significance and appeal (Gerdes
264). His style created gorgeous movement and fluidity characterized by

A Interview On A Clinical Mental Health Counselor
A Personal Interview The purpose of this paper is for me to present a summary of a personal interview
had with Heather Smith, a clinical mental health counselor. It will further explore a day to day basis
on how working as a clinical mental health counselor, may be. Lastly, it will also reflect my personal
reflections about my future as a counselor based on information learned in this course.
Narrative Summary of Interview
On October 26, I had the pleasure of interviewing Heather Smith a clinical mental health counselor.
Heather Smith is a licensed clinical mental health counselor in Alexandria Virginia. She specializes in
PTSD, Anxiety, Trauma, Marital and Premarital counseling. In addition to these specialties, she also
treats disorders such as Dissociative Disorders, Impulse Control disorders, and personality disorders.
Ms. Smith also works closely with Women s issues that include coping skills, sexual abuse,
depression, and suicidal ideation. Ms. Smith services a population of clients ranging from adolescents
(14 19), to adults as well.
Heather believes the primary differences that separate a clinical mental health counselor and other
mental health professionals such as: a social worker and psychologist are due to the type of work they
focus on primarily. Although, social workers, and psychologist may counsel clients, the majority may
have more in depth specification of study. Social workers are likely to work in case management and
psychologist work closely with

American History X Essay examples
American History X
American History X is clearly a film dealing with the social topic of racism. The interesting thing
about this film is the way in which the subject is presented. First of all, it is obvious that, though
racism is always a difficult subject to deal with, American History X presents it without any
reservations or dummying down. Second, the film s figurehead for racism, Derek Vinyard (Edward
Norton), is not an unintelligent redneck racist as films often portray them, but is in fact well spoken,
charismatic and bright, although he clearly holds ideals that are terribly wrong. Finally, the film shows
that it is not only the white, neo nazi racists who are fools for being involved in this, but all those who
hold hatred in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For example, the young, black men were disgraced by the white male in a local game of basketball;
therefore, the black men go to do damage to the white males car, which in turn, leads to the white
male killing the young black men. It s a vicious circle with no end in sight.
The film also did a very good job in the way they tie racial issues in with the portrayal of Derek s
character as a strong and bold leader. The things that make Derek such a powerful and frightening
character is not the fact that he is racist, it is the fact that instead of choosing a somewhat regular,
backwoods, unintelligent racist as the films central character, Derek is well spoken and bright. It is
these qualities that allow him to recruit the youths of Venice Beach and form, with the help of his
mentor Cameron Alexander, the entire white supremacist culture permeating the area. Instead of just
telling them to hate black, Hispanic, and Asian people because they are of that race, he makes
speeches, telling them charismatically and passionately how these people are stealing their jobs,
causing Americans to suffer a poor standard of living. He tells them America needs to take care of
Americans before dealing with immigrants. And his speeches clearly incite this hatred in the young
people of that area and flare up their tempers, causing behavior, such as we see in the movie when
they destroy a grocery store because it was bought by a Korean immigrant who employs, 40 fuckin

Child Custody Issues In Family Law
The field of family law governs all types of interactions within the family. One area of family law that
may be important to many is child custody. Child custody determines the rights of both parents to not
only visit with children, but also make important decisions in the child s life. Many people might not
be aware that there are two different and important aspects to child custody: legal custody and
physical custody. Legal custody refers to the parent s decision making authority for important
decisions in the child s life. Such decisions include education, medical care, and religious upbringing.
Physical custody refers to where the child resides.
In many cases, throughout the divorce process, the parents might have come up with their own
parental custody agreement. These agreements are typically ratified by the courts, but courts are not
bound by these agreements and may reject these agreements. Courts are not bound by parental
agreements because the courts have an independent responsibility to determine what arrangement is
best for the child s welfare. Allowing courts to have the power to reject parental agreements is
important to the court s ability to determine what is in the child s best interest and create custody
arrangements that are best for the child. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This first option is for one parent to have sole physical and legal custody while the other parent will
have visitation, or access, rights. Usually, with sole custody, legal and physical custody will not be
split. If one parent has sole custody, he or she will typically have sole legal and physical custody.
However, sole custody comes with certain limitations. An example of these limitations is that both
parents are prohibited from belittling, or bad mouthing, the other

Unusual Tactics by the United States in the Pacific War
The war in the Pacific was unlike any war the United States had fought up until that time. They couldn
t use their normal ground attack tactics; they had to figure out how to win from above. Unlike in the
European front they couldn t move through and allied country to forge a ground attack against their
enemy. They needed to find a way to hit Japan from the air with the added difficulty of the mainland
being across an ocean from the target. Before any attack could be launched the U.S. needed supplies in
the form of long range bombers. These bombers were extremely important in the Pacific Theater,
without them the U.S. wouldn t have beaten Japan.
After the surprise Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor in December 1941 it took the United States until
April of 1942 to retaliate. That was done through the Doolittle Raid. A group of 16 B 25 launched
from the USS Hornet to conduct the first bombing on Japanese soil. Despite not having very much of
a military significance the raid of Tokyo was a great boost to the moral of military and the public of
the United States. It showed both Japan and the U.S. that Japan wasn t out of reach and was no longer
isolated in the Pacific. After the 1942 campaign it wasn t until 1944 when the U.S. launched another
bombing attack on Japan. At the beginning the War in the Pacific had a slow start, much of that had to
do with the preparation it took to attack the enemy in a new style of warfare.
The Doolittle raid proved the need for a long range bomber.

States. The group of artist or singer say words with a rhythm that rhymes. Some hip hop music lyrics

rap music has become very popular and a successful genre in music. The style of dressing called urban

Essay on Phonics and Whole language methods
Phonics and Whole language methods
Phonics is a technique that teaches beginning readers to associate a particular sound with each letter of
the alphabet or letter combination (Unger, 1996). Students receive explicit instruction in the
mechanics of reading before they begin the actual process.
Once students know what sounds correspond with each letter or letter combination, they move on to
sounding out words. The English language has only about forty four sounds, so when students begin
to read, they move along in strict order so that he or she only sees words whose letter sounds they
have already learned (Flesch, 1983). An example from Rudolf Flesch s book Why Johnny Still Can t

The other popular technique of reading instruction is whole language, also known as the look say
method. It has roots that reach back to the 1920s, when some teachers favored experience charts in
place of text books (Chall, 1992). Two of whole language instruction s biggest advocates are Ken
Goldman and Frank Smith. In the late 1960s, they observed that adults seemed to process written
word without recoding it letter by letter, or sound by sound. Based on this, Goodman and Smith
claimed that children should learn to read naturally, as they learn to speak, and that breaking words
down into sounds was unnecessary (Moats, 2000). The basic focus of whole language learning is less
on the rules and repetitions that are prevalent in phonics instruction, and more on the meaning of the
text and how it flows. Whole language emphasizes reading for meaning, and uses language in ways
that relate to the students lives directly (Curtis, 1997). Sounding out words, as used in phonics, is not
used in this type of instruction. Whole language experts advise that most students will learn to read
and write with no explicit instruction in phonics and spelling (Moats, 2000). Students are encouraged
to decode words in context, and they are taught that the answers are not as important as the process
(Haring, 1998). Often, teachers will advise students to use pictures in the story to help them figure out

Essay about A Critical Visual Analysis of a Work of Art A Critical Visual Analysis of a Work of Art The piece of art that I chose to do my critical visual analysis on will be the Birds of Paradise, painted by Frits van Eeden, in 1997. (Birds of Paradise) Eeden was born in Tilburg, Holland, in March 1944 and grew up in The Hague. (Frits Van Eeden) For the Birds of Paradise he used acrylic paint on canvas. This piece of art is located in the Evans Library, at Florida Tech, in Melbourne, FL. When I look at the picture I see birds helping each other, they seem to have harmony. One can get an impression of how people can co exist with one another. The Birds of Paradise is a beautiful and bright color bird. They represent joyfulness and paradise. In this picture, they look like cranes. I don t ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Eeden made the birds in his piece of art to look three dimensional. When you have three dimensional shapes, the results seem to be some kind of form. In order to have form in art you have to have height, width, and depth to enhance the texture, color, and tone in a given piece of art. The overall organization also implies the form. With this piece of art, Eeden took the six birds which are standing and organized them to appear symmetrically to be in a particular pattern. He put the birds in a sculptural kind of design to make them look three dimensional. One of the birds seems to be picking something off of the bird beside him. They seem to be caring for each other. Eeden has used geometrical shapes to draw the birds. The curves of the birds are simple. The background of this piece of art shows that it is a sunny, calm day with a strip of blue sky above the birds. The ground seems to nonexistent. You can t see where the bird s feet meet the ground or maybe they are standing in water. The quality given to a piece of art work is through the use of light. When asked about light in art they are asking about the sun rays, candles, moons, flames, and many other sources of light. Artist use light to create contrast in a given space. In Eeden s picture, Birds of Paradise, the birds are in the light. He is demonstrating the type of environment the birds are living in. This explains why you can see the bird s feet because the ... Government does not have My College s Back Last week, while having my morning coffee, I overheard a conversation between a college lecturer and a well known secretary in The Ministry of Finance. I was about to return upstairs in my office when I observed the secretary pushed forward, looking the lecturer directly in her eyes emphatically and aggressively said, You academics just don t get it...the government aint gat no money to take care no university. I relaxed in my seat as the conversation between the two raged on. This same discussion is but a fragment of a national discussion that has been ongoing in this country for many years, and the debate is whether or not The Bahamas is economically, financially and socially developed enough to maintaina university. This situation has become a worrying problem indeed.According to her article, We Do Not Need A University , Ms. Pam Burnside discusses the issue of The Bahamas being a small independent nation who wants to ameliorate its tertiary level institution with inadequate financial resources. She further explains that the Bahamas is too greedy and is ashamed of the College that we already have in existence. In addition, she argues that The Bahamas does not need a university and simply cannot afford it. In response to Burnside s arguments, I most certainly agree with her. The College of The Bahamas is not well equipped to become a university as it lacks a few vital components that need to be addressed urgently: Financial resources,Infrastructure and Staffing. ... • 4. The Courtship of Inanna and Durmuzi The Courtship of Inanna and Dumuzi, a hymn written in 2800 BC, details the courtship between the goddess Inanna and her consort, Dumuzi. Shown above, is a conversation between them that gives an account of a society reliant on developing agriculture where plants and animals are produced. This section also contains a very important analogy for human reproduction and agricultural reproduction that gives the reader a unique perspective into the past and the male female interactions that existed. Throughout the whole hymn there are a very repetitive patterns and descriptions. The author s heavy use of alliteration with words such as poured, plants, placed, grain, and womb are very distinct. Which is the most obvious in the lines I poured out plants from my womb./I placed plants before him,/I poured out plants before him . Since this is a translated hymn we do not know how exactly this appears in the original, but because of the words chosen by the translator we can assume this section there was originally an alliteration and the translator has tried to express it. Another pattern that evolved through out the whole piece is the author comparing agricultural production to sex and female reproductive organs. In this passage it is very obvious in the lines I poured out plants from my womb...I poured out grain from my womb . This metaphor is repeated so often in the passage, and the piece overall, that it is the most significant pattern and it lends a very interesting insight into ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Royal Mint branches were established in Sydney, New South Wales, Melbourne, Victoria, and Perth, Western Australia for the purposes of minting gold sovereigns from Australia s rich gold deposits. The Gold Exchange Standard Towards the end of the 19th century some of the remaining silver standard countries began to peg their silver coin units to the gold standards of the United Kingdom or the USA. In 1898,British India pegged the silver rupee to the pound sterling at a fixed rate of 1s 4d, while in 1906, the Straits Settlements adopted a gold exchange standard against the pound sterling with the silver Straits dollar being fixed at 2s 4d. Does the brutal truth in Shakespeare s Sonnet 130 and Swift s A beautiful Young Nymph going to bed , take away from the beauty of the two poems. Beauty and aesthetics can be defined as Nothing more nor less, than sensitivity to the sublime and the beautiful and an aversion to the ordinary and ugly , this means that beauty can be absolutely anything which is beautiful as long as it is not ugly or ordinary, this may seem harsh, much like the poems by William Shakespeare and Jonathan Swift. In both poems; Sonnet 130 by William Shakespeare and A beautiful young nymph going to bed by Jonathan Swift, aesthetic beauty is explored in a brutal and honest light. It may seem romantic of Shakespeare to have kept his lover a secret, but we must remain aware that he did have a wife at home in Stratford upon Avon. The possible occupation of Shakespeare s Dark Lady gives a contextual link to Swift s poem; A Beautiful Young Nymph Going to Bed , as the role of prostitution is explored in this poem and there are suggestions that this was the role of the Dark Lady. The purpose of satire is to show what is bad or weak about something or someone through humour and exaggeration. Jonathan Swift is known as The Godfather of Satire , Swift himself defined satire as; satire is a sort of glass, wherein beholders do generally discover everybody s faces but their own . Here, Swift explains how everyone who reads his satire will see how he is mocking everyone else, apart from themselves. • 9. Henry Allison s Two Aspect View Henry Allison s two aspect view differs profoundly from the two world view by introducing epistemic conditions. For Allison, the difference between appearances and things in themselves is epistemic rather than ontological. Rather than reflecting two separate realms, phenomena and noumena reflect the structure of the mind.21 The notable distinction here is that rather than the identification of the appearance with the representation, the appearance is associated with the thing in itself.22 Allison argues that Kant s conditions of human knowledge should be taken as epistemic conditions rather than logical conditions.23 Allison defines an epistemic condition as a simply a condition that is necessary for an object or objective state of affairs.24 These epistemic then turn out to be space, time and the categories; it can be known a priori that every object is structured in terms of these conditions.25 By introducing epistemic conditions, Allison is capable of separating the two aspect view from the two world view. These epistemic conditions must be distinguished from metaphysical, ontological and psychological conditions.26 The psychological conditions are defined as a disposition of the mind which governs belief acquisition.27 The prime example of this would be Hume s customs or habit as features of the mind.28 Epistemic conditions differ from them by reflecting the structure mind but differ in that they are objectivating; psychological conditions reflect how the mind ... A second factor was an increased availability of wild plants. A third factor was the development of technologies that food production would later depend upon. A fourth factor was the link between the rise in population density and the rise in food production. A fifth factor was food producers could force hunter gatherers to leave or kill them off because of the great numbers they had. 9. She did not get that affection and that is an important part of life. • 22. Walmart s Reputation For Unfair Labor Practices Walmart is the one of the biggest retailers in the United States and one of the foremost and influential corporations in America. It has become one of America s most successful retail chains by offering everyday goods at low prices for middle and lower class families. Even with all of its financial success, the company cannot open a store without dealing with an abundance of protest groups. Walmart always overcomes these groups, but nonetheless there is always opposition against them. Walmart has had a reputation for unfair labor practices by refusing unionization, offering really low wages, and discrimination. The protest groups defend local store owners, the environment, employee salaries, and discrimination against various minority groups. Walmart displays an image of being charitable and giving back to the community, but they are responsible for unjust and discriminating actions in the United States. To maintain its low cost strategy, Walmart has been involved in ethically questionable practices, including gender discrimination in promotion and pay. While the Supreme Court recently ruled against class certification of 1.5 million women in the Dukes v. Walmart case due to a lack of proof that Walmart operated under a general policy of discrimination , there is much evidence that shows that gender discrimination is still a problem rooted in the culture of Walmart, despite gender neutral policies (Biskupic, 2011). Arguably, humanity is re designing the planet Earth every hour of every day, either deliberately by rational planning or inadvertently with billions of unconsidered actions, and in the main ruining it. We all carry a responsibility for the destruction and therefore we all need to mend our ways, but of course some groups within society have more power than others to take remedial action: engineers, architects, planners and designers for instance. If they became pro active rather than re active, they could play a crucial role: their skills, imagination and ingenuity could help preserve the planet for future generations. And on May 12 this year the Design Museum held a well attended conference entitled Green Design Beyond the Bandwagon? which included speakers from Zanussi, Volvo, New Consumer Magazine, Design Week and the Labour Party. An Ecological Design Association has been founded in Britain with the intention of encouraging training, professional standards, product testing and ecodesign in general. In terms of transportation, green design ranged from changes in the engines of conventional cars to take unleaded petrol and to reduce fuel consumption, to Anthony Howard s Africar (a cheap, wooden vehicle designed for Africa). Volvo in Sweden renewed its long term commitment to making environmentally friendly cars and buses, while Renault in France designed an electric car. Modifying existing vehicles is a step in the right direction but it does nothing to limit the ever growing number of cars on the roads. If population growth has to be limited, so does the growth in cars. Many greens would prefer to walk and cycle or to use public transport. Once the will exists to improve and expand the latter, many more opportunities for the green transport designer will occur. Fashion also witnessed changes during the 1980s. • 24. Efficient Society Vs Efficient Society Tiffany Deichmann Chilton, Lawrence English 1301 25 October, 2017 Efficient Society or Vacant Humanity Extended Definition Preventing the wasteful use of a particular resource is one of the definitions of the word efficient. The most common thought when people hear the word efficient is that when something is efficient it is better than something that by comparison is not as efficient. Now we have gas efficient cars, energy efficient appliances and as many highly efficiently people would say we are working to have a more efficient society. What is the cost of more efficiency, in many things of course the more efficient the better, with more energy efficient cars and appliances we are saving our planet reducing car emissions make for cleaner air that we all breathe and will make us less reliant on fuel and other natural resources. Can a real value or cost be put on the human mind and spirit, what happens to people when they are set aside or determined to be of little or no use, what happens when people begin to question their own worth in the world. In Jeremy Rifkin s book Time Wars includes the reading selection The Efficient Society he is analytical in his explanation of what is being considered to be an efficient society. In the critical analysis he details the time management scenarios that are addressed to make more efficient workers. Corporations need to produce more work from each of its workers and the way that the companies take the time to measure ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 25. Parental Neglect By Roald Dahl s Matilda And Neil Gaiman... Child abuse, in any form, is cause for outrage. This makes the question of whether neglect, benign or otherwise, is better than violence hard to consider. According to Canada s Public Health Agency, parental neglect, at 34% of cases, is the most commonly reported form of child maltreatment (31). In Roald Dahl s Matilda and Neil Gaiman s Coraline, parental neglect is contrasted against violence as both are shown to be psychologically detrimental to a child, while the impact of these imperfect parents is able to help a child redefine their sense of self. The overt neglect of her prodigal intellect experienced by Matilda leaves her feeling misunderstood and an outsider in her family which differs from the perceived neglect which leaves Coraline struggling with her sense of self. Born to parents described as gormless (Dahl 4), Matilda is both blessed and cursed with a prodigal intellect. Causing Matilda to crave knowledge, it is her intellect that leads her at the age of four years and three months (9), to defy her parents and everyday walk to the library. Matilda admits to this neglect to Mrs. Phelps, the librarian, when she tells her of her mother, She doesn t encourage reading books. Nor does my father (10). With this statement Matilda shows how her parents have neglected to foster her intellect. Matilda s eagerness to digest information, and the fact that the only book in the Wormwood home is her mother s cookbook, elaborates how she differs from her parents. ... There is little to argue about when suggesting that the Baroque period of art and architecture during the 1600 s was characterized by a positive, vigorous, and passionate style (Gerdes 253), enveloped in lavish splendor, glorifying the imagery of highborn aristocrats, religion, and homoeroticism. The theatrical, grandiose, and ornate style was heavily influenced by Christianity, life, love, symbolism, allegory, and morbidity. The artist Michelangel Merisi da Caravaggio a leading artist during this period used a combination of religious scenes in everyday locales filled with rough looking common people (Kleiner 549) along with the intensity of the dramatic Baroque passion for richness in color and texture. One of Caravaggio s most famous pieces of art was the Entombment of Christ, and David with the Head of Goliath, for which he painted his own head as the victim, with blood drips from his freshly severed neck, sparing nobody the gory facts of decapitation (Harris 49). The disturbed genius was also interested in the fresco painting of the Renaissance and this is perhaps what enticed Caravaggio to paint the Creation of Adam on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. The history of the Baroque period cannot be discussed further without mentioning the Dutch artist Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn, whose Baroque paintings rose to universal significance and appeal (Gerdes 264). The interesting thing about this film is the way in which the subject is presented. First of all, it is obvious that, though racism is always a difficult subject to deal with, American History X presents it without any reservations or dummying down. Second, the film s figurehead for racism, Derek Vinyard (Edward Norton), is not an unintelligent redneck racist as films often portray them, but is in fact well spoken, charismatic and bright, although he clearly holds ideals that are terribly wrong. The things that make Derek such a powerful and frightening character is not the fact that he is racist, it is the fact that instead of choosing a somewhat regular, backwoods, unintelligent racist as the films central character, Derek is well spoken and bright. It is these qualities that allow him to recruit the youths of Venice Beach and form, with the help of his mentor Cameron Alexander, the entire white supremacist culture permeating the area. He tells them America needs to take care of Americans before dealing with immigrants. • 30. Child Custody Issues In Family Law The field of family law governs all types of interactions within the family. One area of family law that may be important to many is child custody. Child custody determines the rights of both parents to not only visit with children, but also make important decisions in the child s life. Many people might not be aware that there are two different and important aspects to child custody: legal custody and physical custody. Legal custody refers to the parent s decision making authority for important decisions in the child s life. Such decisions include education, medical care, and religious upbringing. Physical custody refers to where the child resides. In many cases, throughout the divorce process, the parents might have come up with their own parental custody agreement. These agreements are typically ratified by the courts, but courts are not bound by these agreements and may reject these agreements. Courts are not bound by parental agreements because the courts have an independent responsibility to determine what arrangement is best for the child s welfare. Allowing courts to have the power to reject parental agreements is important to the court s ability to determine what is in the child s best interest and create custody arrangements that are best for the child. ... • 31. Unusual Tactics by the United States in the Pacific War The war in the Pacific was unlike any war the United States had fought up until that time. They couldn t use their normal ground attack tactics; they had to figure out how to win from above. Unlike in the European front they couldn t move through and allied country to forge a ground attack against their enemy. They needed to find a way to hit Japan from the air with the added difficulty of the mainland being across an ocean from the target. Before any attack could be launched the U.S. needed supplies in the form of long range bombers. These bombers were extremely important in the Pacific Theater, without them the U.S. wouldn t have beaten Japan. After the surprise Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor in December 1941 it took the United States until April of 1942 to retaliate. That was done through the Doolittle Raid. A group of 16 B 25 launched from the USS Hornet to conduct the first bombing on Japanese soil. Despite not having very much of a military significance the raid of Tokyo was a great boost to the moral of military and the public of the United States. It showed both Japan and the U.S. that Japan wasn t out of reach and was no longer isolated in the Pacific. After the 1942 campaign it wasn t until 1944 when the U.S. launched another bombing attack on Japan. At the beginning the War in the Pacific had a slow start, much of that had to do with the preparation it took to attack the enemy in a new style of warfare. The Doolittle raid proved the need for a long range bomber. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 33. Essay on Phonics and Whole language methods Phonics and Whole language methods Phonics is a technique that teaches beginning readers to associate a particular sound with each letter of the alphabet or letter combination (Unger, 1996). Students receive explicit instruction in the mechanics of reading before they begin the actual process. Once students know what sounds correspond with each letter or letter combination, they move on to sounding out words. The English language has only about forty four sounds, so when students begin to read, they move along in strict order so that he or she only sees words whose letter sounds they have already learned (Flesch, 1983). The other popular technique of reading instruction is whole language, also known as the look say method. It has roots that reach back to the 1920s, when some teachers favored experience charts in place of text books (Chall, 1992). Two of whole language instruction s biggest advocates are Ken Goldman and Frank Smith. In the late 1960s, they observed that adults seemed to process written word without recoding it letter by letter, or sound by sound. Based on this, Goodman and Smith claimed that children should learn to read naturally, as they learn to speak, and that breaking words down into sounds was unnecessary (Moats, 2000). The basic focus of whole language learning is less on the rules and repetitions that are prevalent in phonics instruction, and more on the meaning of the text and how it flows. Whole language emphasizes reading for meaning, and uses language in ways that relate to the students lives directly (Curtis, 1997). Sounding out words, as used in phonics, is not used in this type of instruction. Whole language experts advise that most students will learn to read and write with no explicit instruction in phonics and spelling (Moats, 2000). Students are encouraged to decode words in context, and they are taught that the answers are not as important as the process (Haring, 1998).
