The Machine Stops, By E. M. Forster
The Machine Stops Literary Analysis In the short story The Machine Stops , E. M. Forster gives us an
insight into a world where technology is in every aspect of our lives. Vashti, the main character, must
struggle with her internal conflict and her relations hip with the technology in their world. In addition,
Forster uses the central theme to explain our dependence on technology. He also uses symbolism and
irony to contribute to this central idea. Through this futuristic setting, Forster develops the
fundamental concept of blind faith and its influence in our everyday lives and choices. Firstly, we are
introduced to Vashti as a woman about five feet high, with a face as white as fungus. Although in her
society she is the perfect size, in our terms her body type could be described as a blob . She would just
be pile of flesh and this is due to the lack movement in their lives. As a music lecturer, Vashti is a star
citizen in the eyes of her society; however, she nly lectures on already established views of Australian
music. Tending to go along with the norms of society, she is a conformist and has no problem firmly
believing in what is considered normal . For example, when Kuno declares that he would like to go
outside to the surface, she argues that it is contrary to the spirit of the age. This means that she solely
disapproves because it is against the ideas of the society. Being quite firm in her beliefs, she can be
fairly stubborn as well. If she makes up

The Effect Of Reading The List Of Operations Names On...
1.What is the effect of reading the list of operations names in Perception Management? I think what
the author is trying to show us how many operations are going on during the war. 2.How did the
names make you feel? While I was reading the list of operations I felt like I was reading a list of
codenames made by grade schoolers. For example, Bone breaker, Wolfhound furry, Lightning
hammer, all sound like video game abilities, not military operations 3. What qualities do you think
makes this a poem? I don t really see this as a poem, however if I had to pick a reason why it is a
poem i d have to say because the names of operations flow together. 4. Which of these names might be
offensive or disturbing? Why? I really don t like ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
By becoming apathetic to a situation, I tend to lose all feeling for the situation whether it be positive
or negative. 8. I think that the word waltz helps make a kind smile more then just a kind smile. It
shows the reader that even though the person is armed with a bazooka he is still a kind person. I think
that Solmaz is trying to show that not everyone who serves in the military is cruel. I m not really sure
if I am interpreting this right but to me, the waltz shows me the difference between what the soldier is
wearing and who he is. 9. I think that a comparison connects both war and violence with
intimacy/courtship by showing that love can be hard and violent, and that intimacy/relationships can
cause great damage. 10. The picture is missing from the book. I think this serves as a way to point out
that we don t think of the people who die as real people unless we are connected to them. I also think
that when there are pictures of the deceased people don t tend to look at them because they feel guilty.
11. I think that the author is talking about how people think of as it a taboo to speak in Arabic in the
state, where she currently resides. I think her language neutralizes by accepting the unspoken rule
about the language. I honestly have no idea what is happening here. 12. I think that Solmaz s poems
de neutralize and de sanitize by showing her truth behind them. For example, she is being treated
unfairly and in

Arctic Wildlife Refuge
Protect the Arctic Refuge Jimmy Carter s forward to Arctic National Wildlife Refuge: Seasons of life
and Land, A Photographic Journey by Subhankar Banerjee asserts that the Arctic Wildlife Refuge
should be protected by the government and the people of America. Carter supports his argument by
using imagery, historical evidence, and tone. First, Carter uses a description of the Arctic refuge to
prove that imagery supports his requests. The Arctic Refuge is described as As the never setting sun
circled above the horizon, we watched the muskox, those shaggy survivors of the Ice Age, lumer along
braided river that meander toward the Beaufort Sea. This displays the beauty, innocence, and calmness
of the refuge, proving that anything this beautiful should be defended. Carter s description affects the
audience by making them feel pity for all of the animals and the environment, knowing that its beauty
will be destroyed, urging the audience to change the refuge s fate. Thus, imagery perfectly
demonstrates how important the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He states, It would be a grand triumph for America if we can preserve the Arctic Refuge in its pure,
untampered state. To leave this extraordinary land alone would be the greatest gift we could pass onto
future generations. This final explanation in Carter s work confirms the claim that he has been trying
to support. Carter feels concerned towards this cause and he wishes that everyone in America and the
government cares for it as well. If anyone loves a cause, idea, or image, they will do whatever it takes
to save and nourish it. This is exactly how Carter feels towards the Arctic Refuge and his writing
implements this into the audience by making the readers feel sorrowful, yet wanting to change the way
the Arctic Refuge is treated. Hence, Carter truly cares for the Arctic Refuge and wants the audience to
change the refuge s

The Song Of Wandering Aengus, By William Yeats And Seamus...
William Yeats and Seamus Heaney are both considered as the best Irish poets. Although, they are both
Irish, however, they did not always agree on the same topics. In the poem The song of wandering
Aengus written by W.B Yeats which was a one of a kind poem that shared the same theme as the poem
Digging which was written by Heaney. Regardless of the common theme, these two poems are
different for the reason that Yeats s poem refers more to cultural identity whereas Heaney s poem talks
more about family identity, mostly about his father.
The Song of Wandering Aengus poem gives the reader a great introduction to one of the famous myths
of Ireland: the mythology of love and beauty, and his infatuation with a beautiful girl. I went to blow
the fire a flame, / But something rustled on the floor, / And someone called me by my name:/It had
become a glimmering girl (lines 10 13). In these lines, Yeats mentioned the word fire which represents
enlightenment and inspiration in the Irish culture. In addition to, it also represents Yeats desire to
breath life into Ireland s literary and cultural identity as he is the enlightened one. Where he
transitioned the trout into life which shows the reflection of his desire. However, Heaney s poem
Digging does not related in anyway to the Irish mythology or culture that was referred to in the few
lines in The Song Of Wandering Aengus . Seamus Heaney prefered to cover the idea of family in his
poem and avoided the cultural identity

Hubble Space Telescope
The Universe is something that has been explored for years and years. Over time, our understandings
and beliefs on the Universe and our world has changed due to new technologies and discoveries. The
Big Bang Theory is one example of an concept that is actively believed within the scientific
community and has been made well known in our world today. This theory, which can be used to
explain the origin and age of our universe, has been refined over the years through a reviewing
process in the scientific community as more discoveries came in due to new technological
advancements.
Put simply, the Big Bang theory is most supported and believed theory on how the Universe began. It
essentially states that we began as a small singularity and over ... Show more content on

The Hubble Space Telescope is a telescope that was launched into space in 1990, April 24th. Its
primary function was to take pictures of stars, planets, moons, galaxies, etc. This type of telescope is
different from a telescope such as the Hooker Telescope as it is in space, rather than on Earth, and was
used for different things. Over the many years that this extraordinary telescope has orbited in space, it
has helped scientists with many new discoveries and refined previous theories or beliefs. One of the
biggest discoveries this telescope has made is the discovery of galaxies that we did not know of
previously because they were so far away. This discovery was very important as it has lead scientists
to calculating a more accurate age of the universe. The Hubble Space Telescope made this discovery
by observing Cepheid variables, which are stars with the same average brightness. Although, their
brightness is essentially the same, the stars would seem either brighter or dimmer depending on its
position in relation to Earth. For example, if one Cepheid variable was 100,000 light years away and
another Cepheid variable was 200,000 light years away, the second star would seem dimmer as it is
further away from the Earth and our perspective makes it look like it is not as bright. Scientists can
use this observation to work out around how far away a Cepheid variable, and ultimately a galaxy, is
from the Earth. Using this information and the pictures taken by the Hubble Space Telescope,
scientists were able to work out a more accurate age of the universe which was around 13.75 billion
years old. Without this sort of technology, we wouldn t know as much about the universe as we do
now and we may not have been able to refine our knowledge on the age of the universe. To sum up,
the Hubble Space Telescope is an important piece of

Persuasive Speech On Fight Cancer
Cancers cells are present in all of us but lie dormant or we can say in sleeping............ only to be
awakened when our soil i.e our body s strength in terms of immunity goes down. Why we start getting
degenerated early or in better way One should ask oneself : What can I do to my body to reverse the
process of degeneration there by leading to healthy life there by shunning dis ease. So, what one can
do to live better, live longer ? Although the techniques are well known as they are rooted in our day to
day life but due to modernization we tend to neglect them. You need to catch up.........

An Analysis of the Pharmaceutical Industry using Porter s...
In 1897, Felix Hoffmann created a new industry. He found a way of adding a cluster of two extra
carbon and five extra hydrogen atoms to a substance extracted from willow bark. The result is known
to chemists as acetylsalicylic acid. To everyone else it is known as aspirin. It turned Bayer, the dye
maker Hoffmann worked for, into the world s first modern drug company. Geoffrey Carr, The
Alchemists, The Economist Feb 19th 1998
Today s Pharmaceutical Industry is characterized by several important factors that influence the
business environment in which each company operates:
·Severe competition from capitally strong competitors
·Strict government regulations
·Long approval wait time
·Technology as an important factor
·Lower levels ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Providers wishing to increase market share must take it away from someone else. Switching costs are
relatively low. Customers will shop around based on price, even in small communities. Admittedly,
customer loyalty tends to be higher in smaller communities but this loyalty is shrinking as another
factor, mergers and acquisitions, increase. There is little relevant difference in products and the
diversity among competitors is low.
BARRIERS TO ENTRY
Prescription: High, a company cannot manufacture a drug that has a patent on it. It must wait till after
the patent expires to manufacture it.
Generic: Low, once the patent is expired, everyone will want to manufacture the drug (especially if it
was a big money maker for the inventing company).
Over the counter: Medium, depending on the new entrant s resources. Store brands will always be
available. However, for small companies a name brand is a huge marketing expense. This will make it
a barrier for them to enter this market.
There are many barriers that can be created to prevent new entrants or to slow down their arrival.
In the pharmaceutical industry, a new entrant may be faced with various hurdles erected by established
businesses, such as:
·economies of scale manufacturing, R D, marketing, sales,
·distribution product differentiation established products, brands and relationships
·capital requirements and financial resources
·access to distribution

Dropping Of Nagasaki Research Paper
Dropping of the bomb Nagasaki
On August 9th, 1945 at 11:02 A.M., another B 29 bomber, Bock s Car, piloted by Charles Sweeney
was sent by the United States to drop over Nagasaki. The bomb, called Fat Man, was dropped because
of the devastation at Hiroshima being insufficient in persuading the Japanese War Council to accept
Potsdam Conference s demand for unconditional surrender. Planning to drop the atomic bomb on
August 11th, the United States had to push forward the date to August 9th because of bad weather. At
1:56 A.M., Bock s Car took off, dropping the bomb at 11:02 A.M. at 1650 feet above the city. The
equivalent force of the atomic bomb explosion was equal to 22,000 tons of TNT. Although the
surrounding hills around Nagasaki contained a good amount of the destructive force, about 60,000 to
80,000 people were killed. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It was also referred to as Mark III, and was the second last nuclear weapon used in war. The name Fat
Man comes from the original shape of the atomic bomb. It was wide and round. The war machine was
an implosion type nuclear weapon and consisted of a solid plutonium or uranium core. It weighed
10,800 lbs, and had a length of 10 ft 8 in with a 60 inch diameter. The bomb was roughly the size of a

Gloria Play Analysis
The play that was chosen to be adapted to film was, Gloria. Gloria , is written by Branden Jacobs
Jenkins. The play was first performed in the theater on May 28, 2015 and has only remained on the
stage. Gloria , is definitely a cinematic piece of work, which means it has qualities that will adapt well
into a film. What qualities in the play make it cinematic? First, the dialogue in the play will certainly
adapt well when creating a film. The structure of the play is another cinematic quality as well as the
jump cuts throughout the course of the performance. Gloria , is a two act play. When adapting this
play to film, one important aspect is the different shots that are being filmed. Whose face do you want
showing? What angle is the camera? Do you want the character being filmed to look superior or
weak? Also, how the locations are going to come into play for the making of the film. The climactic
scene is when Gloria opens fire in the office and kills almost everyone including herself. This scene is
at the end of Act 1 on pages mid 29 30. I would choose for the killing scene to not be shown but
mainly heard. Running and reactions are the only parts of people that I want seen in the film. In the

could play the part very well, especially with his quirky smile. For the character of Devin, Dean s look
alike, I would choose Jeremy Irvine from, War Horse. Jeremy does not have blonde hair like Lucas but

Military Accountability Essay
Being late does not make one important. Tardiness is a very unattractive quality when it comes to most
aspects of one s life: family functions, meetings, interviews, and especially a job. While a family may
forgive tardiness, a job will not. Being late once or twice in one s life is unavoidable. Being
consistently tardy makes one unreliable and shows a lack of respect for other people s time and
obligations. Being late tells others that one person can be waited on, while everyone else can t. People

What could have been done the night before? Punctuality is a habit. It s a matter of creating the
routine and sticking with the routine. Punctual people will be winners everywhere and will be one step
ahead of the others. Planning ahead will contribute to being punctual, less stress, and the ability to
navigate around unforeseen circumstances. This all helps avoid difficult situations as far as time is
concerned. This show of respect will also command respect from others. Someone who shows, over
and over, that they are the master of their time is someone who will be taken seriously in areas far
removed from time management. That foresight and adaptability that gets you where you need to be,
when you need to be there, tells the people around you that you can handle whatever is thrown at you.
When it comes to the military certain things are automatically expected of a person. One of the most
important expectations is time management and being on time. Every day there are any number of
places a soldier is required to be at a certain time and as the old saying goes, if you re not fifteen
minutes early, you re late no matter the situation. Some soldiers understand the importance of showing
up fifteen minutes prior to an event or scheduled activity. To others, it makes no sense at all. Extreme
as it may sound, when dealing with the number of people that

It s the story of Creasy being hired as a bodyguard for a nine year old girl named Pita Ramos; the

when Creasy begins helping Pita with her swimming and a beautiful friendship is formed where
Creasy becomes more like her father figure. When gunman Jesús Ochoa kidnaps Pita, Creasy is
extremely wounded, but sets out to find her and vows to kill anyone involved in or profiting from the

forms Today s most recent version of Gypsy is the 2008 musical featuring Patti Lu Pone as Mama

mother who wants nothing more for her daughters than fame on the big stage. My second favorite is

testing intelligence. Edward Thorndike was a powerful psychologist who is often referred to as the
establisher of modern educational psychology. He was perhaps most known for his remarkable puzzle

commencement suggests that responses instantly followed by gratification will be more credible to

discouragement will become less probable to happen. Thorndike s commencement also played a
significant role in the elaboration of behaviorism and B.F. Skinner s operant conditioning. Thorndike s
law of effect refers to human behavior and is supported by his confidence that human behavior can be
analyzed in the stimulus response units. Edward s

The Inferiority Complex Placed Upon The Subaltern
The inferiority complex placed upon the subaltern is adverse, calamitous, and destructive. The
subalterns are and have been alienated, isolated, marginalized, and outed from the hegemonic forces.
They are distinguished as that of a lower class, inferior, and they do not have a voice in the world
because they are outside of the hegemonic class; they are not able to tell their side of history. To be
colonized is to be removed from history, except in the most passive sense. In the world today, the
reason why that we rarely hear from the subalterns is because their voice is viewed as inferior, they
have assimilated into the colonial power s culture, and loss of personal identity. However, from
becoming aware about African intellectuals, such as Frantz Fanon, and historical references to the
conscious development of racial constructs will allow people to view the static images of subalterns in
films in a different light; a light of awareness and outrage. It helps to give the subaltern a chance to tell
his or her side of history and it results in talk about race in the world. In Frantz Fanon s book, Black
Skin, White Mask, it expounds that films, from the subaltern s point of view, help to create is
discourse about race relations in the Unites States and the world alike through allowing the view to
think differently, express sympathy for the subaltern, and give as to why we rarely hear from the
subaltern.

assignment opened my eyes on how much detail can collude with results. When I started this
assignment, I listed everything as I thought it should be. But trouble to arise was when I read the

concise, yet descriptive enough to understand. Every time I thought I was being descriptive, it tends
out to be either too long or too confusing for anyone but myself to understand. there s a continuous

The Importance Of Arts Integration In Education
Arts integration is defined as the investigation of curricular content through artistic explorations. In
this process, the arts provide an avenue for rigorous investigation, representation, expression, and
reflection of both curricular content and the art form itself (as cited in Donovan Pascale, 2012, p. 14).
As previously discussed, the arts are a boon to those who seek to make their curriculum design more
inclusive of all types of learners, and contributes to the social curriculum. Even beyond those
applications, arts integration can truly benefit all educators.
The arts teach a number of practical skills outside of the primary academic curriculum that teachers
are responsible for fostering. Notably, the four Cs (communication, collaboration, critical thinking and
creativity) of 21st century learning each work hand in hand with the arts. If we consider the arts as
modes of communication, we see that students are more clearly able to demonstrate learning, ask
questions, and connect with peers and teachers alike. The more languages a teacher can use, the better
chance he or she has to speak (and listen to) diverse students. We need many languages to educate our
children for their present and future lives (Powell, 1997, p. 5). Students who struggle with traditional
classroom languages may find themselves suddenly able to participate in a world that was closed to
them before. This is particularly important in health education, where the stakes are immensely high

The U.s. Economy Operates On A Fundamentally Capitalistic...
The U.S. economy operates on a fundamentally capitalistic reward based principle: people work, are
compensated ideally proportionately for their work, and use that compensation however they see fit to
better their own lives and the lives of those they love. Many people, in their youth, are encouraged to
build up a nest egg of sorts for use when they grow old and are no longer capable of working as much
as necessary to maintain an acceptable quality of life. However, this methodology raises an important
question: what about people who, through no fault of their own, just aren t capable of providing for
themselves? It would seem absolutely inhumane to leave them in the dust.

Bruce Knauft and The Gebusi Religion
As anthropologist Bruce Knauft described, the Gebusi clan had words that described many different
aspects, examples included oil the Gebusi word for tomorrow and yesterday and owa for grandparents
and grandchildren, but the most defining one was kogwayay, a catchfall marker to describe all of their
cultural distinction. Because of kogwayay s branching terminology, kogwayay is also the Gebusi s
word for ethnicity, the identification with a cultural group because of shared values customs and
beliefs, while inversely excluded from different groups. One aspect that contributes to the Gebusi s
sense of kogwayay is religion. Through Knauft s book we see their religious ways introduced and
watch them change and adapt with the dynamics of cultural change over time. As defined above,
ethnicity is the shared customs, values and beliefs that the cultural group shares that set them apart
from other groups. The religion described within Knauft s research is applicable to majority of those
elements, making it a vital part of kogwayay. One of the Gebusi s traditions is presented in the suicide
description of chapter three. Dugawe, one of the men of tribe, was found after hanging himself, and in
Gebusi tradition the women massage the body and cover themselves in the bodily fluids oozing from
the decomposing body. While ethnocentrism may come out in a majority of people, this is part of the
Gebusi beliefs and customs that set them apart from certain groups and bring individuals together.

Ethics Of The At-Will Doctrine
Ethics of the At Will Doctrine Have you ever wondered what the term at will employment means?
According to Cornell University Law School, the employment at will doctrine refers to the
presumption that employment is for an indefinite period of time and may be terminated either by
employer or employee (n.d., para. 1). This doctrine is said to level the playing field between employee
and employer as each party can end their relationship at will. At will employment however is not
equally applied between public and private business sectors, nor is it supported in every state within
the United States. Employees who work for the public sector such as teachers or firefighters, or those
working in California or Montana for example, can only be ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

The employer generally invests time locating a candidate to hire, and resources for salary, benefits and
training to ensure success for both the employee and the company. The employee can terminate his/her
employment at any time, for any reason; thus, leaving the employer at a disadvantage. The employer
has to recoup the company losses by again invest time and money to hire another employee with no
guarantee that the new hire will stay any longer than the previous employee. Is this fair or ethical
behavior toward the employer? Do employers ask that the employee reimburse them for the time and
resources expended to hire a replacement? Should they? In an effort to create equity in risk and benefit
between employee and employer, the at will employment doctrine allows the employer to terminate an
employee at any time, for any reason. But again, is this fair or ethical behavior towards the employee?
Don t businesses have a greater amount of power than an employee in determining work environment
and pay scale? Is it ethical for an employer to take advantage of their employees and fire those who
make a high salary and replace them with employees with a lower starting pay in order to save money
or distribute bonuses to top executives? Cornell University Law School notes that given the unequal
bargaining power between employees and employers, critics of this doctrine have noted its overly
harsh results and have looked to unions, acting as certified

Isis s Impact On The United States Of America
Ben Rodkey Glaser English 10 3 4 15 ISIS ISIS has been a rapidly increasing threat to not just the
United States of America, but the entire world. ISIS has done countless brutal, sick, heart wrenching
things that have caused a national and international uproar in the citizens of numerous countries. ISIS
considers them the Islamic State, and they seem to have many motives. They basically want a large
portion of the Middle east under ISIS control and for the rest of the world to accept their disgusting
traditions as they claim they are doing, This threat has done some very unspeakable things; the
problem needs to be solved. Considering the view the United State holds right now, there are a few
actions that can be taken to reduce this threat that ISIS presents. ISIS has rapidly become an enormous
problem for most of, if not all of the world. There are some very simple and some very complicated
ways to solves this problem. The most efficient way is to simple go to war with ISIS and physically,
mentally and emotionally destroy everything and everyone that is supporting this cause, another way
is to give them what they desire to have, finally the last option is just completely ignore the foreign
issue until it presents itself on U.S. soil. After an online video emerged on Tuesday, January 21st,
2015, showing ISIS threatening to kill two Japanese hostages, relatively little was known about the
relationship between the two prisoners. But Reuters News revealed later that next day

Pros And Cons Of Valentine s Day
February February...there s a lot of things I think about in this month. The first thing I think about is
Valentine s Day, with all the love in the air. Most importantly, the second thing I think about is Black
History. In everybody s mind this is the shortest month of the year, it s about love, and the
appreciation of African Americans. What is Valentine s Day? Valentine s Day is going out your way to
do something for a loved one. But why should people have to really show their love for someone in a
certain month, on a certain day? Love should always be expressed everyday. Valentine s Day was
created by a man named St. Valentine. There are many stories on how this became such a big holiday,
but one story says that he was imprisoned and he wrote the first Valentine to the love of his life
because he was going to die, ending the letter with From your Valentine. Later in life, it became more
about love because people during the middle ages began to realize that during the middle of February
is which the 14th, the birds mating season had beginned which resulted in love. But, I feel that
Valentine s Day has its pros and cons. It is about being loved by someone and being able to express
how you feel towards a loved one. This day is usually men going out their way to do something
special for their significant other. Sometimes it is the women doing something special, but the men are
usually the ones to do something special first. Some people have a really good Valentine s

The Effects Of Music On Children On Music And...
The brain is a complex organism that is stuffed in our skull to help up to move, think, learn, live. As
the brain progresses through the stages of development, one of the things that really helps to have it
develop right is music. Have you ever noticed how expecting mothers listen to music during
pregnancy. This has many benefits, for one it helps the child bond with the mother, knowing her type
of music and getting to know what she likes and her strengths and weaknesses. This makes for a
stronger bond with the mother. It also helps with the development of the child, finding joy in music
and understanding the awesome power of it. As we get older we start to really like whatever type of
music we like but when we go back to that music that we heard while still not even born we get a
warm fuzzy feeling that only comes from your mom listening to music while she was pregnant with
you. As we grow up and move to middle school our brains start to have a different thing that happens
and the rest of our body starts to change and we start to gravitate toward being our own person and
like our own music. Music is a huge part of our lives and helps us through our development stages.
Our brains are not done fully developing till we are 25 and the only way that we get through all of that
is by listening to music and really giving ourselves the best chance to have our brains develop right. I
m not saying that by not listening to music our brains can t develop, I m just saying that

Allianz try to go beyond the classical HQ subsidiaries tensions. This willingness (in words, if

Cross border group mobility:

The Allianz Worldwide Partners (AWP) project:

German but only one of them was sent by HQ (i.e., previously worked there).
Conversely, the head of Group Internal Audit is a Frenchman who did most of

o Middle management: the assignment to Group HQ of well educated

Psychology the Nervous System Essay examples
Assignment 3 Written Essay Questions 1. a) We are able to experience different types of sensations
because our nervous system encodes messages. German physiologist Johannes Muller in his doctrine
of specific nerve energies described a kind of code which is anatomical. In his doctrine, Muller
explains that different sensory modalities exist because signals received by the sense organs stimulate
different nerve pathways that lead to different areas of the brain. For example, when the ear receives
signals, these signals cause impulses to travel along the auditory nerve to the auditory cortex. And
signals from the eye cause impulses to travel along the optic nerve to the visual cortex. Because of
these anatomical differences, light ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
An extensive matrix of neurons in the brain gives us the sense of our own bodies and body parts. Pain
results when this matrix produces an abnormal pattern of activity, as a result of memories, emotions,
expectations or signals from various brain centres and not just from signals from peripheral nerves.
Because of the lack of sensory stimulation or a person s efforts to move a nonexistent limb, abnormal
patterns may arise, resulting in phantom pain. 6. a) The role stimulus generalization plays in this
problem is where mental images of the sights and smells of the clinic can become conditioned stimuli
for nausea, aside from the nurse s uniform, smell of rubbing alcohol or the waiting room. b) High
order conditioning can be illustrated in this problem of vomiting and nausea where a patient who
drank lemon lime Kool Aid before their therapy sessions developed anxiety disorders. They continued
to feel anxious even when the drink was offered in their homes rather than at the clinic. c) Classical
conditioning could help patients reduce pain and anxiety through the use of placebos. For example the
use of pills and injections that have no active ingredients or treatments that have no direct physical
effect on the problem. The bigger and more impressive the placebos are, the stronger their
psychological effects are. 7. The evidence shows that punishments are

The Characteristics Of King Oedipus The King As A Tragedy
Oedipus the King by Sophocles is more than just a basic tragedy. It contains a complete combination
of all the features of a tragedy. I find Sophocles King Oedipus interesting. Not because of the whole
incest thing, the killing of the father, and the sleeping with the mother. I am still too naive to
appreciate the significance of that. I find Sophocles King Oedipus fascinating because as I read it with
attention, I realized how amazingly hard it was to write. Even though it s a Greek tragedy and the
reading is a little hard to understand. But, once someone gets inside the story line, its captivates one s
attention. I admit I enjoy less the content of the play than Sophocles writing skill. When to retell a
well known story, one has to make the story enough convincing without relying on the end of the
story. one must dislocate the point of the story from its end to rest. By doing that the story will not lose
its appeal. One has to be a creator. So, you have to twist the whole story in such an irresistible way
that it is compelling despite the fact that the outcome of the story is known. How do Sophocles solve
this problem? By making King Oedipus the central character and unintentionally the architect of his
own downfall. The strengths that once lead him to solve the riddle later served as his own destruction.
To make a story more appropriate to the stage, which is dealing with flashbacks, forward moving
energy of the story must accommodate with the backward references that

Diamondback Moth Research Paper
Every year farmers crops are subject to droughts, floods, storms, and so much more. But one of the
biggest problems that seem to be plaguing the agricultural industry, specifically the cabbage and
lettuce industry, is pests. One pest in particular is the diamondback moth, and it has been wreaking
havoc all over New York. However, all is not lost; there still will be cabbage and lettuce in the grocery
store. The reason for this? Scientists have come up with an effective new way to manage the
diamondback moth, and it isn t reliant on pesticides. It uses genes. But, best of all, it won t be one
farmer paying for one treatment. It will be a universal movement, and this movement has the
possibility to revolutionize the crucifer, or, in more simple terms, the cabbage and lettuce market. ...

The diamondback moth is an invasive species that is believed to have originated in Europe. Since it
was not originally native to New York, it has few natural predators, so the population can easily spiral
out of control. It is brown and tan in appearance and is somewhat elongated in shape. Females lay
approximately 150 eggs at a time, but they can lay up to 300. In addition, the moth only lives for up to
16 days. This may not seem like a long time to us because we live for decades, but the diamondback
moth is laying eggs for ten out of those sixteen days (Capinera, 2000). Now think about it. That s a lot
of larvae in a short amount of time. This can be a big problem for farmers, especially because the
problem comes in the form of a common moth. There are so many moth varieties in New York that it
is almost impossible to know all about each one, and that is why farmers like me who live all around
New York have an even tougher

Unit 3 Listening Assignment
Listening Assignment Each day I listen to hundreds of different conversations, songs, and lectures.
While I listen, I have also realized that I encounter a lot of other noise around me. Listening begins the
moment I wake up, and it does not end until the moment I go to sleep. While doing this listening log, I
learned a lot about how I listen and why I listen. The first day that I really began to pay attention to
what I listened to, I found out that I listen to a lot of things for enjoyment also known as appreciative
listening. It all started when I got woke up by roommate s alarm clock going off to the song It Girl.
Now, I do not know if I can completely consider this appreciative listening because I did not enjoy
getting woke up that much, but I do enjoy that song. At that moment, when the alarm went off, I had
no other noise surrounding me and this was the only time throughout the day that this occurred. I also

typically while icing and we would discuss our pains and give each other the support that we needed
at the time. The other times when I caught myself empathic listening was when I was talking to
someone who was stressed out about school. It may just be that they are struggling in one class but I

empathic listening is crucial and every person needs someone to listen to them empathically. As the

Edgar Allan Poe Quotes About Death
Mors ultima linea rerum est ( Latin Quotes about Death ): this quote from Horace perfectly sums up
the theme of the writings of Edgar Allan Poe. Poe suffered much loss throughout his life first with the
loss of his mother, then his adopted mother, his first love, and finally his wife thus explaining why Poe
commonly uses death as a theme in his works. Poe also commonly writes about women and youth,
with the presence of death bringing a depressing and ominous undertone. Death exists in the happiest
and saddest of subjects. The Bells, which judging by the first two sections the reader can assume will
be a celebration of life, turns into a chaotic and then solemn story of death. Annabel Lee, which also
begins in a light and happy mood, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Unlike Annabel Lee, The Raven tells of a lost love and the narrator s inability, or unwillingness, to
shed his romantic melancholia (Magistrale 40). The narrator of The Raven holds on to his grief and
sees death as a barrier currently separating [him] from the lost Lenore (Magistrale 46). The reader then
begins to also see death as barrier and can feel the same sadness that the narrator himself is feeling.
The bird brings about mixed feelings within the narrator. At first, the bird amuses the narrator , but
quickly frustrates him when the bird s only responds nevermore : the narrator wonders if he will
reencounter [Lenore] in the afterlife, and finally if the narrator himself will ever find peace in her
absence. To each of these questions the bird s consistent reply infuriates him at the same time as it
deepens his sense of loss (Magistrale 39 40). This questioning of life after death can make a reader
feel quite crestfallen as it can make him or her wonder whether or not he or she will see a loved one
again. The raven has always been a bad omen...At the conclusion of this poem, we are to believe that
the raven has become a permanent resident of the poet s chamber and soul (Magistrale 40 1): the raven

The Valley Children s Hospital
General Description
The Valley Children s Hospital apartments and condominiums are intended to reduce or eliminate the
commute of the hospital staff that would prefer to have suitable living closer to work. Therefore,
placement of the apartment complex would need to be nearby Valley Children s Hospital. The
proposed complex would be one to two stories tall, depending on demand and space constraints.
Therefore timber, more specifically Douglas fir, is the best choice for construction material. There
will, however, be an athletics facility that will be composed of steel. Since the hospital is located on
Childrens Blvd, a direct road must travel from the apartment complex to that road or any adjacent
roads that lead to Childrens Blvd. Additionally, adequate parking must accommodate all tenants as
well as possible guests, while adhering to handicap laws. Considering that the majority of the land
surrounding the hospital is undeveloped, proper plumbing, gas lines, and electrical conducts will need
to be installed.
Location
The characteristics of the site where the apartment/condominium complex will be built play a
significant role in the development of the same. Therefore, in order to determine the most suitable
location for the construction of the project, a profound analysis of the potential locations must be
carried out. A research process will be necessary to determine the characteristics of every proposed
location. The factors to be considered during the selection

  • 2. The Machine Stops, By E. M. Forster The Machine Stops Literary Analysis In the short story The Machine Stops , E. M. Forster gives us an insight into a world where technology is in every aspect of our lives. Vashti, the main character, must struggle with her internal conflict and her relations hip with the technology in their world. In addition, Forster uses the central theme to explain our dependence on technology. He also uses symbolism and irony to contribute to this central idea. Through this futuristic setting, Forster develops the fundamental concept of blind faith and its influence in our everyday lives and choices. Firstly, we are introduced to Vashti as a woman about five feet high, with a face as white as fungus. Although in her society she is the perfect size, in our terms her body type could be described as a blob . She would just be pile of flesh and this is due to the lack movement in their lives. As a music lecturer, Vashti is a star citizen in the eyes of her society; however, she nly lectures on already established views of Australian music. Tending to go along with the norms of society, she is a conformist and has no problem firmly believing in what is considered normal . For example, when Kuno declares that he would like to go outside to the surface, she argues that it is contrary to the spirit of the age. This means that she solely disapproves because it is against the ideas of the society. Being quite firm in her beliefs, she can be fairly stubborn as well. If she makes up ... • 3. The Effect Of Reading The List Of Operations Names On... 1.What is the effect of reading the list of operations names in Perception Management? I think what the author is trying to show us how many operations are going on during the war. 2.How did the names make you feel? While I was reading the list of operations I felt like I was reading a list of codenames made by grade schoolers. For example, Bone breaker, Wolfhound furry, Lightning hammer, all sound like video game abilities, not military operations 3. What qualities do you think makes this a poem? I don t really see this as a poem, however if I had to pick a reason why it is a poem i d have to say because the names of operations flow together. 4. Which of these names might be offensive or disturbing? Why? I really don t like ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... By becoming apathetic to a situation, I tend to lose all feeling for the situation whether it be positive or negative. 8. I think that the word waltz helps make a kind smile more then just a kind smile. It shows the reader that even though the person is armed with a bazooka he is still a kind person. I think that Solmaz is trying to show that not everyone who serves in the military is cruel. I m not really sure if I am interpreting this right but to me, the waltz shows me the difference between what the soldier is wearing and who he is. 9. I think that a comparison connects both war and violence with intimacy/courtship by showing that love can be hard and violent, and that intimacy/relationships can cause great damage. 10. The picture is missing from the book. I think this serves as a way to point out that we don t think of the people who die as real people unless we are connected to them. I also think that when there are pictures of the deceased people don t tend to look at them because they feel guilty. 11. I think that the author is talking about how people think of as it a taboo to speak in Arabic in the state, where she currently resides. I think her language neutralizes by accepting the unspoken rule about the language. I honestly have no idea what is happening here. 12. I think that Solmaz s poems de neutralize and de sanitize by showing her truth behind them. For example, she is being treated unfairly and in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Arctic Wildlife Refuge Protect the Arctic Refuge Jimmy Carter s forward to Arctic National Wildlife Refuge: Seasons of life and Land, A Photographic Journey by Subhankar Banerjee asserts that the Arctic Wildlife Refuge should be protected by the government and the people of America. Carter supports his argument by using imagery, historical evidence, and tone. First, Carter uses a description of the Arctic refuge to prove that imagery supports his requests. The Arctic Refuge is described as As the never setting sun circled above the horizon, we watched the muskox, those shaggy survivors of the Ice Age, lumer along braided river that meander toward the Beaufort Sea. This displays the beauty, innocence, and calmness of the refuge, proving that anything this beautiful should be defended. Carter s description affects the audience by making them feel pity for all of the animals and the environment, knowing that its beauty will be destroyed, urging the audience to change the refuge s fate. Thus, imagery perfectly demonstrates how important the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He states, It would be a grand triumph for America if we can preserve the Arctic Refuge in its pure, untampered state. To leave this extraordinary land alone would be the greatest gift we could pass onto future generations. This final explanation in Carter s work confirms the claim that he has been trying to support. Carter feels concerned towards this cause and he wishes that everyone in America and the government cares for it as well. If anyone loves a cause, idea, or image, they will do whatever it takes to save and nourish it. This is exactly how Carter feels towards the Arctic Refuge and his writing implements this into the audience by making the readers feel sorrowful, yet wanting to change the way the Arctic Refuge is treated. Hence, Carter truly cares for the Arctic Refuge and wants the audience to change the refuge s ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. The Song Of Wandering Aengus, By William Yeats And Seamus... William Yeats and Seamus Heaney are both considered as the best Irish poets. Although, they are both Irish, however, they did not always agree on the same topics. In the poem The song of wandering Aengus written by W.B Yeats which was a one of a kind poem that shared the same theme as the poem Digging which was written by Heaney. Regardless of the common theme, these two poems are different for the reason that Yeats s poem refers more to cultural identity whereas Heaney s poem talks more about family identity, mostly about his father. The Song of Wandering Aengus poem gives the reader a great introduction to one of the famous myths of Ireland: the mythology of love and beauty, and his infatuation with a beautiful girl. I went to blow the fire a flame, / But something rustled on the floor, / And someone called me by my name:/It had become a glimmering girl (lines 10 13). In these lines, Yeats mentioned the word fire which represents enlightenment and inspiration in the Irish culture. In addition to, it also represents Yeats desire to breath life into Ireland s literary and cultural identity as he is the enlightened one. Where he transitioned the trout into life which shows the reflection of his desire. However, Heaney s poem Digging does not related in anyway to the Irish mythology or culture that was referred to in the few lines in The Song Of Wandering Aengus . Seamus Heaney prefered to cover the idea of family in his poem and avoided the cultural identity ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Hubble Space Telescope The Universe is something that has been explored for years and years. Over time, our understandings and beliefs on the Universe and our world has changed due to new technologies and discoveries. The Big Bang Theory is one example of an concept that is actively believed within the scientific community and has been made well known in our world today. This theory, which can be used to explain the origin and age of our universe, has been refined over the years through a reviewing process in the scientific community as more discoveries came in due to new technological advancements. Put simply, the Big Bang theory is most supported and believed theory on how the Universe began. It essentially states that we began as a small singularity and over ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Hubble Space Telescope is a telescope that was launched into space in 1990, April 24th. Its primary function was to take pictures of stars, planets, moons, galaxies, etc. This type of telescope is different from a telescope such as the Hooker Telescope as it is in space, rather than on Earth, and was used for different things. Over the many years that this extraordinary telescope has orbited in space, it has helped scientists with many new discoveries and refined previous theories or beliefs. One of the biggest discoveries this telescope has made is the discovery of galaxies that we did not know of previously because they were so far away. This discovery was very important as it has lead scientists to calculating a more accurate age of the universe. The Hubble Space Telescope made this discovery by observing Cepheid variables, which are stars with the same average brightness. Although, their brightness is essentially the same, the stars would seem either brighter or dimmer depending on its position in relation to Earth. For example, if one Cepheid variable was 100,000 light years away and another Cepheid variable was 200,000 light years away, the second star would seem dimmer as it is further away from the Earth and our perspective makes it look like it is not as bright. Scientists can use this observation to work out around how far away a Cepheid variable, and ultimately a galaxy, is from the Earth. Using this information and the pictures taken by the Hubble Space Telescope, scientists were able to work out a more accurate age of the universe which was around 13.75 billion years old. Without this sort of technology, we wouldn t know as much about the universe as we do now and we may not have been able to refine our knowledge on the age of the universe. First, the dialogue in the play will certainly adapt well when creating a film. The structure of the play is another cinematic quality as well as the jump cuts throughout the course of the performance. Gloria , is a two act play. When adapting this play to film, one important aspect is the different shots that are being filmed. Whose face do you want showing? What angle is the camera? The climactic scene is when Gloria opens fire in the office and kills almost everyone including herself. This scene is at the end of Act 1 on pages mid 29 30. • 19. The Importance Of Arts Integration In Education Arts integration is defined as the investigation of curricular content through artistic explorations. In this process, the arts provide an avenue for rigorous investigation, representation, expression, and reflection of both curricular content and the art form itself (as cited in Donovan Pascale, 2012, p. 14). As previously discussed, the arts are a boon to those who seek to make their curriculum design more inclusive of all types of learners, and contributes to the social curriculum. Even beyond those applications, arts integration can truly benefit all educators. The arts teach a number of practical skills outside of the primary academic curriculum that teachers are responsible for fostering. Notably, the four Cs (communication, collaboration, critical thinking and creativity) of 21st century learning each work hand in hand with the arts. If we consider the arts as modes of communication, we see that students are more clearly able to demonstrate learning, ask questions, and connect with peers and teachers alike. The more languages a teacher can use, the better chance he or she has to speak (and listen to) diverse students. We need many languages to educate our children for their present and future lives (Powell, 1997, p. 5). Students who struggle with traditional classroom languages may find themselves suddenly able to participate in a world that was closed to them before. Pain results when this matrix produces an abnormal pattern of activity, as a result of memories, emotions, expectations or signals from various brain centres and not just from signals from peripheral nerves. Because of the lack of sensory stimulation or a person s efforts to move a nonexistent limb, abnormal patterns may arise, resulting in phantom pain. 6. a) The role stimulus generalization plays in this problem is where mental images of the sights and smells of the clinic can become conditioned stimuli for nausea, aside from the nurse s uniform, smell of rubbing alcohol or the waiting room. b) High order conditioning can be illustrated in this problem of vomiting and nausea where a patient who drank lemon lime Kool Aid before their therapy sessions developed anxiety disorders. They continued to feel anxious even when the drink was offered in their homes rather than at the clinic. c) Classical conditioning could help patients reduce pain and anxiety through the use of placebos. • 30. The Characteristics Of King Oedipus The King As A Tragedy Oedipus the King by Sophocles is more than just a basic tragedy. It contains a complete combination of all the features of a tragedy. I find Sophocles King Oedipus interesting. Not because of the whole incest thing, the killing of the father, and the sleeping with the mother. I am still too naive to appreciate the significance of that. I find Sophocles King Oedipus fascinating because as I read it with attention, I realized how amazingly hard it was to write. Even though it s a Greek tragedy and the reading is a little hard to understand. But, once someone gets inside the story line, its captivates one s attention. I admit I enjoy less the content of the play than Sophocles writing skill. When to retell a well known story, one has to make the story enough convincing without relying on the end of the story. one must dislocate the point of the story from its end to rest. By doing that the story will not lose its appeal. One has to be a creator. So, you have to twist the whole story in such an irresistible way that it is compelling despite the fact that the outcome of the story is known. How do Sophocles solve this problem? By making King Oedipus the central character and unintentionally the architect of his own downfall. The strengths that once lead him to solve the riddle later served as his own destruction. To make a story more appropriate to the stage, which is dealing with flashbacks, forward moving energy of the story must accommodate with the backward references that ... • 31. Diamondback Moth Research Paper Every year farmers crops are subject to droughts, floods, storms, and so much more. But one of the biggest problems that seem to be plaguing the agricultural industry, specifically the cabbage and lettuce industry, is pests. One pest in particular is the diamondback moth, and it has been wreaking havoc all over New York. However, all is not lost; there still will be cabbage and lettuce in the grocery store. The reason for this? Scientists have come up with an effective new way to manage the diamondback moth, and it isn t reliant on pesticides. It uses genes. But, best of all, it won t be one farmer paying for one treatment. It will be a universal movement, and this movement has the possibility to revolutionize the crucifer, or, in more simple terms, the cabbage and lettuce market. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The diamondback moth is an invasive species that is believed to have originated in Europe. Since it was not originally native to New York, it has few natural predators, so the population can easily spiral out of control. It is brown and tan in appearance and is somewhat elongated in shape. Females lay approximately 150 eggs at a time, but they can lay up to 300. In addition, the moth only lives for up to 16 days. This may not seem like a long time to us because we live for decades, but the diamondback moth is laying eggs for ten out of those sixteen days (Capinera, 2000). Now think about it. That s a lot of larvae in a short amount of time. This can be a big problem for farmers, especially because the problem comes in the form of a common moth. There are so many moth varieties in New York that it is almost impossible to know all about each one, and that is why farmers like me who live all around New York have an even tougher ... • 32. Unit 3 Listening Assignment Listening Assignment Each day I listen to hundreds of different conversations, songs, and lectures. While I listen, I have also realized that I encounter a lot of other noise around me. Listening begins the moment I wake up, and it does not end until the moment I go to sleep. While doing this listening log, I learned a lot about how I listen and why I listen. The first day that I really began to pay attention to what I listened to, I found out that I listen to a lot of things for enjoyment also known as appreciative listening. It all started when I got woke up by roommate s alarm clock going off to the song It Girl. Now, I do not know if I can completely consider this appreciative listening because I did not enjoy getting woke up that much, but I do enjoy that song. At that moment, when the alarm went off, I had no other noise surrounding me and this was the only time throughout the day that this occurred. Empathic listening occurred in my days while doing this log when I listen to my roommates talk about if they were physically hurting from a workout and how they hoped it would get better. These conversations occurred typically while icing and we would discuss our pains and give each other the support that we needed at the time. The other times when I caught myself empathic listening was when I was talking to someone who was stressed out about school. It may just be that they are struggling in one class but I listened to them because that is what they needed at the time. Again, from doing this log I learned that empathic listening is crucial and every person needs someone to listen to them empathically. • 33. Edgar Allan Poe Quotes About Death Mors ultima linea rerum est ( Latin Quotes about Death ): this quote from Horace perfectly sums up the theme of the writings of Edgar Allan Poe. Poe suffered much loss throughout his life first with the loss of his mother, then his adopted mother, his first love, and finally his wife thus explaining why Poe commonly uses death as a theme in his works. Poe also commonly writes about women and youth, with the presence of death bringing a depressing and ominous undertone. Death exists in the happiest and saddest of subjects. The reader then begins to also see death as barrier and can feel the same sadness that the narrator himself is feeling. The bird brings about mixed feelings within the narrator.
