The Swimmer John Cheever
In John Cheever s short story, The Swimmer he conveys the transformation of the character through
the use of setting. The story begins in the suburbs of Neddy Merill s neighborhood. After a night of
partying and drinking, Neddy the main character seems optimistic, he has a perfect family, a high
social status, and not many problems going on in his life. He feels young and energetic therefore
decides to swim across town through backyard neighborhood pools. However, his journey becomes
less fun as the day grow goes on. The water becomes dirty, uninviting and Neddy becomes tired. The
times when Neddy is in and out of the pool also represents the emotions he is going through. For
example, when Neddy is not swimming, he tends to depressed ... Show more content on

One way that Cheever did an excellent job was the way he never mentioned what time of day it was.
For example, the first time Neddy almost headed home Cheever says, ...he wondered what time it had
gotten to be. Four? Five? Or when he was trying to remember when he last saw the Welchers, he
thinks to himself it seemed only a week or so ago. We can see here that it also seems as if Neddy is
getting older because words such as lame and ached show Neddy s change from his prior state to a
weaker one. This confusion of time, was clever in that he showed the reader that Neddy was losing
track of time but never lets the reader find out that the time frame is much longer than it seems.
Cheever gives us clues throughout the rest of the story that more time has actually passed. For
example, later in his journey Neddy smells wood smoke and wonders why anyone would be burning
wood during this time of year, and later at the Sachses when he asks for a drink to pick him up , he is
informed that the Sachses have not had anything to drink since Mr. Sachs surgery, which was three

Religious Language In The Handmaid s Tale
Language is a building block when it comes to writing. It covers most aspects of writing, such as word
choice, syntax, phrasing, etc. It s the process that engages the audience. Ranging from a 10 volume
series of World War II analysis to Dr. Seuss, language is malleable, in which it s shaped to fit the
theme at hand. It s a powerful tool that can affect the emotion of the reader and the overall atmosphere
drastically. If the writing is boring, with simple and empty words, no imagery, of course it would pain
you to flip to the next page. On the other hand, if the writing has expressive word choice, has imagery
that paints a vivid, living world in your head, you would race through the story to find out what
happens next. Specifically I would like to bring attention to the fact that language is power, and in the
novel, The Handmaid s Tale by Margaret Atwood, this is a prominent idea that is illustrated
throughout the entire book. Atwood made it so that power is created through religious language,
freedom of speech, the speech ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This concept is evident throughout the entire book. In Gilead, religious language is what sustains the
theocratic government. It also plays into the freedom of speech, where individuals are compelled to
use when communicating and interacting, making it normal in their daily lives. There are many
religious references in the book, such as the positions, the roles of individuals in the book, like the
Angels, Guardians, Jezebels, Marthas, and the assigned names for the Handmaids that take away their
sense of identity in the autocratic state of Gilead. The store names, as well, such as Daily Bread and
All Flesh. Bread is a reference to the bible, where bread is considered a celestial food. As for flesh, it
is a reference to a quote in the bible that people go through the stages of life, being born and carrying

Summary Of The Little Albert Experiment
Reading the Little Albert experiment, I found it to be very entertaining. John B. Watson was a
behaviorist whom headed out an famous psychology experiment with a graduate student named
Rosalie Raynor. Apparently the goal of their experiment was to demonstrate if it was possible to
manifest a fear reaction. The fear reaction would be to a previously neutral stimuli through experience
. In order to show their experiment they used a nine month old baby boy from the hospital. This child
was waiting to be adopted. The baby name was Albert which is where the Little Albert experiment
name came from. Therefore, Watson and Rayner wanted to make sure that their fear producing stimuli
would work on baby Albert. The first thing they tried was removing support that consisted of pulling
on the blanket Albert was lying. They wanted to pull this out from underneath him. This did nothing
but upset Albert. He s a tough fellow. I would not want anyone yanking anything from under me. Next
they decided to test a loud noise as the fear stimulus. They did this by banging a steel bar with a
hammer. Once again this made Albert very upset and the poor baby started to cry. However, this made
Watson and Rayer ready to begin their conditioning experiment with baby Albert. They exposed the
baby boy to a series of stimuli. This included a white rat, a monkey and a rabbit to observe the baby
boy reaction. Amazingly enough Watson and Rayner received no reaction from him. ... Show more

Banana Leaf Bundles and Skirts:
A Pacific Penelope s Web?
Margaret Jolly
In her review of the significance of cloth in Pacific polities, Annette Weiner has evoked the persona of
Penelope, weaving by day, and unweaving the same fabric by night, in order to halt time (1986, 108).
[1] This image of a Pacific Penelope halting time was inspired by Weiner s reanalysis of the Trobriand
islands. In her monograph (1976), in several subsequent papers (1980, 1982a, 1983a, 1986) and in her
shorter text (1988) she conclusively demonstrated that Malinowski and a host of other male observers
had failed to see women s central place in Trobriand exchange: that in fixating so totally on men s

The rhetorical device that Weiner uses in Women of Value, Men of Renown, namely, heading each
section with a quotation from Malinowski, does, as she suggests, highlight their historical relation,
but, again, ultimately it stresses the consistency of their ethnographic questions and the constancy of

What initially astounded me upon my arrival in Kiriwina was the striking similarity between a

Although superficially some things had changed (an airstrip, tourists, some Western clothing)

The section s Chi squared was 1.54 with 3 degrees of freedom. The probability was 0.70 which

two mutant recessive traits, dumpy wings and sepia eyes. The Laws of Inheritance state that: alleles
from an organism will separate during the formation of gametes and genes that are different will assort

The Story of an Hour
In The Story of an Hour, Kate Chopin suggests that in certain scenarios, the death of a loved one may
be a blessing in disguise. Possible situations may include an abusive relationship, or an unhappy
marriage, as the story suggests. Although the circumstances throughout the story might lead the reader
to believe that Louise s husband s death would cause her great pain, ironically, when she hears the
news, she feels a sense of euphoria. This suggests that death may not always cause agony. Louise s
characteristics add to the theme of this story in several ways. One of her characteristics is her youth.
This characteristic is important because it is symbolic of a fresh, new start at her life of freedom due to
the death of her husband. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
But she actually dies because her free life has come to a sudden stop, And is heart broken that she will
not be able to live her life as she hoped she could, alone. Another conflict in this story is the role of the
wife versus the role of the husband. For instance, Louise struggled with her feelings about her
marriage for years. Louise thinks what could love, the unsolved mystery, count for in face of this
possession of self assertion which she suddenly recognized as the strongest impulse of her being. She
admits that she did love Brently, but often she did not. On the other hand, the story suggests that
Brently was completely content in the marriage and assumed that Louise was too. This conflict is
reflected in Louise s internal struggle. When she realizes that Brently is alive, she must die. This is the
only way she can win the freedom she was struggling for within herself. She dies because he is alive,
he is ultimately responsible for her death. For one blessed hour, she believes Henry dead, and in her
own mind she sets about rebuilding her future, imagining her infinite possibilities; when he arrives at
home safe and sound, however, Louise drops dead of a heart attack. Her family assumes, of course,
that the shock of seeing Henry alive after believing him to be dead was too much for her; but Chopin
implies otherwise. It seems more likely that

This disease has been steadily increasing in the United States over the past decade. It affects about 24
million people in American over the age of 20. Diabetes is ranked 7th among the leading causes of
death in the United States. It can also contribute to the development of other fatal diseases such as
heart disease and kidney failure.
Diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disorder characterized by increased blood glucose concentration and
disordered insulin metabolism. People who have diabetes are unable to produce sufficient insulin or
use insulin effectively. In someone without diabetes, insulin secretions rise after food is ingested. This
insulin allows muscle and adipose cells to take up newly absorbed glucose from the blood. Insulin is

due to excessive production of ketone bodies, ketoacidosis, is sometimes the first sign of diabetes.

relate to the Declaration of Independence When it says that all men are created equal. Today,
everyone, black, white, yellow, male, or female, enjoy equal rights. I believe that unarmed truth and
unconditional love will have the final word in reality. (King 4). Unconditional love for all peoples is a
great quality that King had, and many people today have modeled after. When you suddenly find your
tongue twisted and your speech stammering as you seek to explain to your six year old daughter why
she cannot go to the public amusement park that has just been advertised on television, and see tears

Now, all children are permitted in amusement parks. Many black children also couldn t get an

Conduct Disorder Research Paper
Conduct disorder is an externalizing childhood disorder and involves a child displaying behaviors that
violate societal norms or other people s own rights. The causes of such deviant and aggressive
behavior may be linked to genetic, neurobiological, psychological, and sociocultural factors. Some
propose that peer influences may also be etiological factors to such disorders. First, characteristics of
aggression are generally more heritable than other delinquent behaviors such as stealing. It is also
suggested that the MAOA gene on the X chromosome responsible for the break down of certain
neurotransmitters is less active in those with conduct disorder. However, studies show that there is
only an increased risk for conduct disorder among children when the environmental factor of being
maltreated co occurs with the decreased MAOA activity. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It is also known that when a child develops a conduct disorder earlier on in childhood, this is
associated with a lower than average IQ in future years of school. Some psychological factors that
may contribute to the development of conduct disorders include the child s moral awareness, parenting
styles, theories based on modeling and operant conditioning, and Dodge s social cognitive perspective.
Sociocultural factors that are likely predisposing factors to conduct disorders are poor neighborhoods,
lack of parental supervision, and hyperactivity. It should be noted that ethnicity does not increase a
child s risk, but poor neighborhoods that tend to be heavily populated by minorities do. Finally, peer
influences such as being rejected by peers or interacting with like minded peers can be predictive of a

Examples Of Religion In Lord Of The Flies
Religion in Chaotic Societies Such as Brave New World and Lord of the Flies Differences dominate
the varying cultures and societies of the world. Differences appear everywhere, from cultural norms to
forms of government. Most, if not all civilizations rely on some form of religion. Whether a society
relies on a singular extraterrestrial force as a god, or many gods who exist as one, each culture relies
on religion to calm the chaotic nature of the world. The 20th century novels, Lord of the Flies by
William Golding, and Brave New World by Aldous Huxley, both use the of Christ like archetypes,
upon which societies depend when they fall into chaos, in an attempt to calm the disarray of everyday
reality. Human nature naturally gravitates towards a religious figure when reality becomes
overwhelming. Selflessness and sympathy build the archetype of a Christ like figure. Christ like
figures work to aid the society, demonstrating selflessness and generosity. In Lord of the Flies, Simon
remains selfless in the face of adversity. While the other boys obsess and fight over hunting and fire,
Simon helps take care of the littluns. To the littluns, Simon acts as a Christ like figure: Simon found
for them the fruit they could not reach, pulled off the choicest from up in the foliage, passed them
back down to the endless, outstretched hands (Golding 56). Golding shows how Christ like figures
demonstrate selflessness to others, providing the best for other people rather than for

Indo Jazz Analysis
Over the course of this semester we have journeyed from African tribal influences to the height of jazz
during the Swing era, bebop to the abstractions of free jazz, the beloved John Coltrane to influencing
R B and Hip Hop. We have analyzed music over the ages, determining what makes it jazz, what
makes it good. Our minds have been opened to all styles of jazz and we have been exposed to the jazz
standards as well as contemporary and modern pieces, including these mystery songs. Here you will
be guided through my interpretation and analysis of one of these songs.

The Philosophy Of Total Quality Management
Total Quality Management (TQM) is the art of managing quality of whole activities of any
organization. TQM is a philosophy and we can say it is also a set of guiding principles that represent
the foundation of a continuously improving organization. It is the application to improve all the
processes within an organization and exceed customer needs issues of customer satisfaction and
guidance on implementing the marketing concept.
Total quality management deals completely with the quality word. It focuses on the quality of
products, quality of services, quality of management of staff, quality of services deliver to patrons and
so on. So the question is arising what is quality? In general terms quality relates to the feature or
characters or value of a product or service or similar offering.

An ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Attempts to implement TQM regularly fail because top management does not lead and get committed
instead it delegates and pays edge service. Commitment and personal involvement is required from
top management in creating and deploying clear quality values and goals consistent with the
objectives of the organization, and in creating and deploying definite systems, methods and
performance measures for achieving those goals. These systems and methods guide all quality
activities and encourage participation by all employees.
Continuous improvement
Continuous improvement of all activities is at the heart of TQM. it is recognized that customer
satisfaction can only be obtained by providing a high quality product, continuous improvement of the
quality of the product. It is seen as the only way to maintain a high level of customer satisfaction. As
well as recognizing the connection between product quality and customer satisfaction, TQM also
recognizes that product quality is the result of process quality. As a result, there is a focus on
continuous improvement of the organization s processes.

Determinism In Slaughterhouse Five
Kurt Vonnegut, one of the most successful and socially engaged writers of the twentieth century,
dedicated a quarter century to the examination of one of the most devastating blows to humanity in
history, World War Two (Bloom). The implications of determinism strike deep into the pride of man,
thus the prospect of being nothing but debris floating through time will quickly destroy any delusions
of grandeur. In Slaughterhouse Five, the narrative s non linear component reveals the insignificance of
man as the carnage of WW2 rages and the Tralfmadorians, aliens of the fourth dimension, share their
fatalistic philosophy. As war s inexorable nature forges the course of history, the passive antihero sees
the ultimate futility of resistance as well ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Under the Tralfmadorian concept of time, as well as the protagonist s perception of life, all events are
predetermined , and the perpetuation of life gives man the opportunity to spectate every aspect of his
life in an endless loop. Or in the interest of brevity, the past, present, and future have always existed,
and every event snapped in to order from that singularity. The seemingly mutable progression of time
was, in fact, set into place in such a way that cause and effect were inchoate in the beginning although
every single cause could only determine one , immutable single effect, a sort of metaphysical
dominoes (D Ammassa). The non sequential nature of the novel portrays one unheroic hero while
incipient events coalesce into one kaleidoscope whole which gives a portrait of the man as well as
how capriciously death affects man (MacFarlane). In Outlander, time travel allows the non linearity
but with the added factor of controlling the viewing order. According to the Tralfmadorians, it is
simply an illusion here on earth that time moves chronologically (Vonnegut 13). In reality, the

Similarly, in The Land That Time Forgot, the whims of time have mastery over the men and animals.

I Was On A Mission
I was on a mission. A mission to find the answers to burning questions I had after completing my case
study #30. It brought on so many mixed feelings about what a school leader can accomplish at a
school that has a toxic culture and climate that being Roosevelt High School (RHS). Let me explain.
RHS is a long withstanding neighborhood school with a very diverse student population with a wide
variety of academic and social emotional needs. The faculty at RHS has been there for quite some
time thus have tenure. The staff has strong union representation or at least that is what appears to be
the case. My principal, assistant principals, and myself were new to RHS. While there, we observed
many questionable behaviors and activities ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
We were in for a huge challenge.
Interestingly, I read a book called the Five dysfunctions of a team by Patrick Lencioni. It is a
leadership fable that tells the story of a team of executives that are not working as a team. They
struggle with recognizing their true potential in themselves and their team members. The team also
struggles with accepting responsibility and coming to any agreements resulting in negative morale that
influence their subsequent departments in a negative way, as well. And what resonated with me is that
behaviors, attitudes, and activities like this really happen in the culture of an organization. I saw
evidence of each dysfunction in RHS from lack of trust, fear of conflict, lack of accountability, and
inattention to results. (Lencione, 2010) You see as a teacher, the assumption is that your main focus is
your students in your classroom nothing else matters because the things outside of those walls are
things you can t control. However, when you see things through the lens of a leader, certain activities,
attitudes, and behaviors are not as controllable or seem right anymore. Therefore, upon that light, as
principal you reach out to your leadership team for insight into the causes for the problem of practice
and actions needed to

Gender, Masculinity, And The Hegemonic View Of Masculinity
Intro
Masc for masc (masculine looking for masculine) and straight acting (not being seen as a stereotype
and being able to be excepted by heterosexual men) are terms used by Gay men to classify the type of
man they are looking for in a partner; actively rejecting and devaluing femininity and upholding the
hegemonic view of masculinity. Therefor I am researching the how do gay and straight Latinos
construct their masculinity? Straight men deem anything feminine as less than, thus gay men are
ousted. This ousting of gay men is a byproduct of heterosexism in which a men only date women and
vice versa, thus gay men are seen as effeminate for the sole reason of dating other men. In an attempt
to reclaim their lost masculinity gay men are rejecting effeminate men in an attempt to be seen as one
of the good gays . The traits of reclaiming what gay Latinos feel is lost is strongly tied to femiphobia,
internalized homophobia, and toxic masculinity. Gay men want to be seen as normal and just one of
the guys at the cost of their fellow gay men s humanity and manhood. They want to be seen as the
good gay which I define as a gay man that wants to be removed from the stereotype and behaves and
present as straight I want to investigate how gay Latinos specifically construct their masculinity and if
they are contracting it based on their straight counterparts. It is important to distinguish how important
masculinity is to Latin men specifically gay Latinos and see if a

Student Is An Effective Teacher
Every Student Deserves an Effective Teacher
The goal of educators is to provide every student with a highly qualified teacher who is confident,
passionate, inquisitive, creative, innovative, collaborative, free of prejudice and discrimination, and
understands the impact of the teacher student relationship. Therefore, if we are to prepare pre service
teachers on the pathway to classroom success for the 21st century, we need university teacher
preparation programs to establish effective program methodologies that educate beginning teachers on
how to be confident, passionate, inquisitive, creative, innovative, collaborative, free of prejudice and
discrimination, and understands the impact of the teacher student relationship. Additionally, university
programs must create programs that allow teachers to foster skills in preparation for the challenges of
teaching, and more importantly the challenges of classroom management.
Unfortunately, a majority of teachers feel university teacher preparation programs have failed to
prepare them for the realities of the classroom, especially for the challenges of student behavior,
which is cited in the literature as pre service teachers biggest concern (Putman, 2009). Recently, Arne
Duncan, U.S. Secretary of Education stated, Teacher candidates want training that makes them better,
sooner... All educators want to do a great job for their students, but too often they struggle at the
beginning of their career and have to figure out too much

2 Analysis of Southwest Airlines 3.8 Industry
The recent economical and financial downturn severely impacted the airline industry in 2009 and
brought only small increases in 2010. The recession negatively influenced the discretional income of
travellers. More precisely, the leisure travellers and business travellers budget changes resulted with a
sudden decrease in their demand. Therefore, corporate policies tightened and generally the demand for
travelling decreased. On the other hand, demand for substitute products, such as video conferences
and surface travel, has increased. As a result, many airlines, including Southwest Airlines, responded
with capacity cuts and fare discounting. On the other hand, Southwest used the opportunity also to
further expand and because of its low fare services, it could enter new markets as well. 3.9 Company s

Southwest Airlines is described on the NASDAQ profile as a major passenger airline that provides
scheduled air transportation in the US . The company primarily serves short haul routes, but over the
recent years they have expanded their services to medium and long haul routes as well. Their unique
feature is that it only operates with Boeing 737 as it is a domestic low cost carrier company and it was
necessary to have aircrafts that are easy to maintain and repair. If a company only uses one type of

Abortion Vs Pro Life Essay
Introduction Abortion is a big social issue. Either being a Pro Life or a Pro Choice. Choosing a life or
aborting the life of a baby. When the baby is inside the womb, the mother or family has the choice to
either keep the baby or have an abortion. People need to know what all happens in an abortion, and if
they are Pro Life or a Pro Choice person. Description The abortion issue is a case where the doctor
terminates a pregnancy. Abortions are preformed normally before the third trimester. People around
the world are in a jam. They are fighting about if being pro choice is right or if being pro life is right.
The bigger issue here is the partial birth abortion (Gill, 2016). A partial birth abortion is when the

I am not the one that says that handicapped children should be aborted. No. I am the one that says it is
wrong on all terms. The crazy thing is that there is at least 210,000,000 pregnancies a year, and
75,000,000 are abortions. Out of those abortions 21,600,000 of them are unsafe. Out of those unsafe
abortions there have been about 8,500,000 mothers needed to have medical attention because they
were either depressed, or very injured. 47,000 mothers have died in those abortions. To me that is just
very depressing and sad. They say the babies can t feel anything. That s where they are very wrong.
An unborn baby is able to feel pain at the earliest of 8 weeks, at 20 weeks the baby can feel more pain
than the average human. Some abortions can be because of rape , no 99% of abortions have nothing to
do with rape. The sad thing is that if you work out the numbers theres about 1.3 million abortions a
year. 1.3 million divided by 365 days, comes out to 3,500 a day. 3,500 a day divided by 24 hours,
comes out to 145 an hour. 145 divided by 1 hour(60 min), that sadly comes out to 2 per min. Coming
from a Catholic background and growing up always knowing that abortion is a bad thing, I can make

Death of a Salesman and American Beauty
Death of a Salesman is a play by Arthur Miller that follows the dying days of Willy Loman. Willy is a
salesman who is not very at selling whatever he is selling so he takes the easy way out and goes to his
neighbor, Charley, who has worked very hard for his money. Willy thinks that Charley and his son
Bernard are nerdy and that they are not successful. Success to Willy is all about looks, which is why
his son Biff grew up with the idea that as long as you are well liked than you will be successful. Willy
faces the conscious battle between what he wants his sons to see and what he wants to keep personal.

Willy is the same way with taking shortcuts for success. Willy would have to go to Charley and
borrow fifty dollars a week and pretend to [Linda] that it s his pay (Miller). Willy is just as lazy as
Lester when it comes to the working ethic. Willy knows that he needs to make money for his family so
he takes the easy way out to make it seem like he is successful. Both characters believe that in order to
be successful one must project an image of success at all times (Mendes). Lester and Willy both think
that the way one looks on the outside will bring them success. Lester tries to improve his body for
Angela by working out. Willy tells Biff indirectly not to study because if he have scholarships to three
universities they re gonna fluck him (Miller). Willy shows that he thinks that looks get you success
and not hard work. Lester and Willy only wanted to have happiness and success and what they got was
death.
The two men, Lester and Willy, are not the characters that should be matched up even though they
both try very hard to get their dreams there is more similarities between Willy and Carolyn than Willy

sells houses and Willy sells something. Carolyn thinks that her relationship with her family is perfect

The Importance Of Animal Behaviors
Animals are more humanlike than you think! Animals have many humanlike emotions and behaviors,
but this can scare people or blind them. When it should boost conservation attitudes. Animals actually
have all the emotions as humans do, they just don t always show them in the same ways humans
normally do. Animals have all the primary and learned emotions but do not always express them in the
same way as humans do. Animals experience pain, but that does not mean they all show it in the same
way. For example, a fish will express grief/sadness by hiding or by swimming back and forth really
fast, and they will act really strange. Some chimpanzees, to grief, will stay around the body of a dead
friend for long periods of time almost protecting it ( Animal Behaviors ). This data is relevant because
we now know what emotions most animals do and do not have. Animals can also have many
behaviors that humans have too. For example, chimpanzees use tools to help them with everyday
tasks. An example is chimpanzees use sticks to poke potential predators to see how much of a danger
they are to them. Chimpanzees also use rocks to break nuts to eat (Animal Behaviors). This is data is
relevant to the claim because it shows us what kind of human like behaviors animals have. Humans
have primary emotions and multiple learned emotions. Primary emotions are emotions that are
expressed by all cultures and they are anger, sadness, happiness, surprise, disgust, and fear. Learned

Examples Of Racism In Huckleberry Finn
The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is not a racist novel, nor is Mark Twain a racist author. As
Leopold Von Ranke said, You have reckoned that history ought to judge the past and to instruct the
contemporary world as to the future. The present attempt does not yield to that high office. It will
merely tell how it really was . The past had different norms and etiquette than today, and Twain was
merely putting the reader into the perspective of those times. One can t judge the past and judge Twain
s use of the word because in those days, the word was accepted, and not exactly racist . The novel was
a satire on slavery and racism, that, as well as raising social awareness, was also one of the best
American novels of all time. Huckleberry Finn ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In order to put the reader into the perspective of the past and teach them how blacks used to be treated,
he had to use intense language and make harsh comments. Today, people have exceptional knowledge
and have been introduced to racism and what is considered wrong to mention . So the readers of Huck
Finn today jump to the conclusion that Twain is racist because the simplest [things] cannot be made
clear to the most intelligent man if he is firmly persuaded that he knows already, without a shadow of
a doubt, what is laid before him (Leo Tolstoy). People already have a strong sense as to what racism
consists of, so Twain comes off as a racist right away by using remarks that people have been taught
their entire life are racial remarks.Twain introduced Jim as a comical, uneducated runaway slave,
which most people took offense to. The silly behavior of Jim is common for characters in historical
satires, which is most likely the reason for Twain s choice of Jim s appearance to the audience. Jim is
described to the readers as [trustworthy] to the point of gullibility. These qualities are not altered
during the course of the novel; instead, they are fleshed out and prove to be positives instead of
negatives (CliffNotes). Even though Twain depicted Jim as gullible, it shared the trustworthy and
friendship Jim had in Huck. It proved later in the book as a helpful tool, and played a key part in Jim s

Succinate Dehydrogenase
The experiment aimed to determine the effectiveness of differential centrifugation and tissue
homogenisation methods of separating and purifying subcellular organelles from liver tissue.
Effectiveness was determined by assaying for the activity of marker enzymes specific to organelles in
each fraction and calculating the specific activities and percentage distribution of each enzyme in each
fraction (Watson, 2016).
The first enzyme marker used was Succinate Dehydrogenase which catalyses the oxidation of
succinate to fumarate in the tricarboxylic acid cycle (Hollywood, et al., 2010). This cycle occurs
within mitochondria and succinate dehydrogenase is specifically found within the inner mitochondrial
membrane. Therefore, succinate dehydrogenase activity is an indicator of mitochondrial activity
(Berg, et al., 2007). Mitochondria are large organelles, approximately 0.5 1m in diameter and 5

The heavy membrane fraction had the highest percentage distribution (93.236 %) of succinate

success of differential centrifugation as a method of separation. A small percentage of succinate
dehydrogenase was also found in the light membrane and cytosolic fractions: 6.131 % and 0.633 %
respectively. The activity in these two fractions could be due to excessive homogenisation causing
fragmentation of mitochondria into small low density fragments. The lower density meant they
achieved sedimentation at higher centrifugal forces than expected resulting in separation into the light
membrane or cytosol fraction (Claude, 1946). Additionally, mitochondrial activity could be present in
the light membrane fraction due to disruption of the heavy membrane pellet during transfer of the
supernatant, causing the pellet to contaminate the

RNA World Hypothesis
In the early stage of development of life on earth on a molecular basis, some believe that self
replicating RNA molecules acted as the ancestral molecule of life before the more complex DNA and
protein molecules started to evolve and develop. Stronger evidence has supported the hypothesis of
the existence of an RNA world during the origin of life in recent years. The RNA world hypothesis
postulates that RNA molecules were utilised to store and transmit genetic information, self replicate
and to catalyse simple chemical reactions without the help of any other proteins or molecules and
were able to proceed perpetually. They have the ability fold up into a complex structure which either
catalyses a chemical reaction or binds another molecule, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Both of them are used to store and regulate the use of genetic information in a living organism. They
are both constructed using nearly the same molecular structure, having phosphate groups and sugars
linked together to form a phosphate backbone with variable nitrogenous bases utilized to encode the
genetic information, the bases are only differ by an uracil base instead of a thymine base. DNA, unlike
RNA, is not able to catalyse its own replication so they cannot be the primitive molecules. Also,
observing the chemical composition of RNA and DNA, the difference between the uracil and thymine
is the 5th position of the ring structure. Genetic mutation occurred so a CH3 group was added onto the
5th position of uracil to form thymine. Not only RNA has catalytic activity as pointed above, it also
has the ability to control gene regulation, which is known as riboswitch. The ribosome is one of the
most ancient molecules in our cells. In addition, ribosome is composed of RNA and a protein called
Ribonucleoprotein. If the majority of protein content is eliminated, protein synthesis could be
maintained. Therefore, RNA is the most crucial part of the macromolecule and this observation is in
agreement with the knowledge of ribozymes, RNA with an autocatalytic capacity. Taken together, it
strongly suggests that RNA has a

History of Houston
Houston is the most populous city in Texas, the largest city in the Southern United States and the
fourth most populous city in the United States. According to the 2012 U.S. Census estimates, the city
had a population of 2.16 million people within a land area of 599.6 square miles.
Houston is the seat of Harris County, and its metropolitan area is the fifth most populated in the U.S.,
with over 6 million people. The economy of Houston is primarily based on the energy industry
(particularly oil). The Houston metropolitan area comprises the largest petrochemical manufacturing
area in the world, including for synthetic rubber, insecticides, and fertilizers. The area is the world s

the safety report records state the opposite of what s in the written maintenance reports. If there was an
issue with equipment the foreman is supposed to report it to the shop manager. Being that the safety
guard was poorly designed is my main reason to why the company is at fault. The company put their
employees at risk when they had knowledge of a safety issue.
Training, secondly, is very important in the operation of table saws. While the safety guards are in
place to protect the operator from hazards, it is still important that employers have trained their staff
properly in operating equipment. Although the safety guard is intended to protect, it only protects in
four directions: from above, from the rear and form the sides. This puts the operator hands
inadvertently unprotected from the front of the saw. Training records need to be checked and if they

equipment. Also the foreman and the shop managers need to go to manager training on how to handle
workplace safety, employee situations and how to handle incidents reported to them. Also as part of

Questions On Increasing Disciplinary Reading
1. Increasing Disciplinary Reading Biancarosa (2012) states in the introduction to this section that as
students progress up through the grades their reading in content area courses becomes progressively
more distinct (p. 47). A student in a fourth grade science course will encounter different terminology
in a fourth grade social studies course and even more diverse terminology by the time they reach high
school biology. However, I have often found, and Biancarosa (2012) as acknowledges that many
schools do not focus on reading instruction across content areas. Biancarosa elaborates, too often,
schools do not explicitly teach students how the reasoning processes, strategies, and rules for
achieving comprehension vary across the content areas (p. 47). In order to develop adolescents
literacy skills we need to increase their interaction with diverse disciplinary texts. Looking at this from
the higher education lens, once a student moves from the college prep classroom to the collegiate
environment they will be required to demonstrate comprehension and research skills in their
specialized field of study. The best measure that teachers in the K 12 arena can do to assist them for
this transition is to increase their interaction with these texts during the duration of their elementary
and secondary school years.
2. Help Students Achieve Proficiency in Digital Reading This was rather a common sense
recommendation given how much technology and digital reading students are

Multilingualism is easily defined as an occurrence regarding an individual or group of speaker(s) who
use(s) two or more languages, a community of speakers where two or more language are used as oral

two type of multilingualism is seen in our scenario: These two type of multilingualism are: A)
Additive multilingualism and B) Subtractive multilingualism.
Additive bi/multilingualism: Additive multilingualism enriches both the languages by their usage; e.g.
if a child cherishes/nourishes other languages side by side his mother tongue too, then it is called
additive bi/multilingualism.
Subtractive multilingualism: It refers to the gradual loss of the first language as the second language
dominates learner s functional space, in which case the speaker s loyalty shifted towards acquired
language; e.g. if a child acquired second language and this language dominates upon his/her mother
tongue and he/she priorities and shifts loyalty to acquired language, then it is called subtractive
multilingualism. (Bedadur Vijay Nivedita, 2015 pp

Pros And Cons Of Gun Control In The United States
Controlling Our Guns is not the Way to go Being a daughter of a game warden and also growing up in
the rural southern parts of Tennessee, I have always been exposed to firearms my entire life. There is a
famous quote that is relevant to gun control, there are no bad guns, only bad men (Squires, 2002).
Placing restrictions on firearms has been one of the biggest political affairs in not only America but
other countries as well. Firearms in America make up $24 billion of our economy, therefore, we can
say that guns play a major role in the U.S. Many people believe implementing gun laws and
regulations seems to be more of a disadvantage than an advantage to our country, because gun control
has failed in places like Ireland and the United Kingdom. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The definition of gun control involves politics, legislation, and how the use of firearms is being
restricted (Charles, 2015). The main arguments over gun control is mainly a relationship between the
state s powers to regulate public order over citizens (Spitzer, 1998). Controlling our guns does not
reduce crime and violence which has been demonstrated by other countries such as Ireland and the
United Kingdom and the United States government should look to those countries as examples. When
the Founding Fathers wrote the Constitution, they wrote it based on justice and what was fair to the
American people. The purpose of the Constitution is to be the law of the land, therefore, it establishes
and maintains order for that provides a guiding hand for citizens (Spitzer, 1998). Laws banning
firearms would only be followed by the law abiding. Citizens living in the United States have had
access to guns since the beginning when they were used to hunt and gather food and as a mean of
protection. Nowadays, hunting is still a sport enjoyed by millions, who already have many regulations
that they must follow. When the Second Amendment was written, it was meant for everyone is the

  • 2. The Swimmer John Cheever In John Cheever s short story, The Swimmer he conveys the transformation of the character through the use of setting. The story begins in the suburbs of Neddy Merill s neighborhood. After a night of partying and drinking, Neddy the main character seems optimistic, he has a perfect family, a high social status, and not many problems going on in his life. He feels young and energetic therefore decides to swim across town through backyard neighborhood pools. However, his journey becomes less fun as the day grow goes on. The water becomes dirty, uninviting and Neddy becomes tired. The times when Neddy is in and out of the pool also represents the emotions he is going through. For example, when Neddy is not swimming, he tends to depressed ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... One way that Cheever did an excellent job was the way he never mentioned what time of day it was. For example, the first time Neddy almost headed home Cheever says, ...he wondered what time it had gotten to be. Four? Five? Or when he was trying to remember when he last saw the Welchers, he thinks to himself it seemed only a week or so ago. We can see here that it also seems as if Neddy is getting older because words such as lame and ached show Neddy s change from his prior state to a weaker one. This confusion of time, was clever in that he showed the reader that Neddy was losing track of time but never lets the reader find out that the time frame is much longer than it seems. Cheever gives us clues throughout the rest of the story that more time has actually passed. For example, later in his journey Neddy smells wood smoke and wonders why anyone would be burning wood during this time of year, and later at the Sachses when he asks for a drink to pick him up , he is informed that the Sachses have not had anything to drink since Mr. Sachs surgery, which was three years ... • 3. Religious Language In The Handmaid s Tale Language is a building block when it comes to writing. It covers most aspects of writing, such as word choice, syntax, phrasing, etc. It s the process that engages the audience. Ranging from a 10 volume series of World War II analysis to Dr. Seuss, language is malleable, in which it s shaped to fit the theme at hand. It s a powerful tool that can affect the emotion of the reader and the overall atmosphere drastically. If the writing is boring, with simple and empty words, no imagery, of course it would pain you to flip to the next page. On the other hand, if the writing has expressive word choice, has imagery that paints a vivid, living world in your head, you would race through the story to find out what happens next. Specifically I would like to bring attention to the fact that language is power, and in the novel, The Handmaid s Tale by Margaret Atwood, this is a prominent idea that is illustrated throughout the entire book. Atwood made it so that power is created through religious language, freedom of speech, the speech ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This concept is evident throughout the entire book. In Gilead, religious language is what sustains the theocratic government. It also plays into the freedom of speech, where individuals are compelled to use when communicating and interacting, making it normal in their daily lives. There are many religious references in the book, such as the positions, the roles of individuals in the book, like the Angels, Guardians, Jezebels, Marthas, and the assigned names for the Handmaids that take away their sense of identity in the autocratic state of Gilead. The store names, as well, such as Daily Bread and All Flesh. Bread is a reference to the bible, where bread is considered a celestial food. As for flesh, it is a reference to a quote in the bible that people go through the stages of life, being born and carrying on until their death, like a flower in the field that sprouts and ... • 4. Summary Of The Little Albert Experiment Reading the Little Albert experiment, I found it to be very entertaining. John B. Watson was a behaviorist whom headed out an famous psychology experiment with a graduate student named Rosalie Raynor. Apparently the goal of their experiment was to demonstrate if it was possible to manifest a fear reaction. The fear reaction would be to a previously neutral stimuli through experience . In order to show their experiment they used a nine month old baby boy from the hospital. This child was waiting to be adopted. The baby name was Albert which is where the Little Albert experiment name came from. Therefore, Watson and Rayner wanted to make sure that their fear producing stimuli would work on baby Albert. The first thing they tried was removing support that consisted of pulling on the blanket Albert was lying. They wanted to pull this out from underneath him. This did nothing but upset Albert. He s a tough fellow. I would not want anyone yanking anything from under me. Next they decided to test a loud noise as the fear stimulus. They did this by banging a steel bar with a hammer. Once again this made Albert very upset and the poor baby started to cry. However, this made Watson and Rayer ready to begin their conditioning experiment with baby Albert. They exposed the baby boy to a series of stimuli. This included a white rat, a monkey and a rabbit to observe the baby boy reaction. Amazingly enough Watson and Rayner received no reaction from him. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Albert did what any other child would do and began to cry after hearing the loud noise. • 5. Trobriand Islanders-Malinowski and Weiner One Banana Leaf Bundles and Skirts: A Pacific Penelope s Web? Margaret Jolly In her review of the significance of cloth in Pacific polities, Annette Weiner has evoked the persona of Penelope, weaving by day, and unweaving the same fabric by night, in order to halt time (1986, 108). [1] This image of a Pacific Penelope halting time was inspired by Weiner s reanalysis of the Trobriand islands. In her monograph (1976), in several subsequent papers (1980, 1982a, 1983a, 1986) and in her shorter text (1988) she conclusively demonstrated that Malinowski and a host of other male observers had failed to see women s central place in Trobriand exchange: that in fixating so totally on men s exchanges of yams in urigubu and of shell valuables in the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Not far from this gravesite, another stone marks the grave of Mitakata, successor to Touluwa and Powell s informant in 1950. Mitakata died in 1961, and Vanoi became his heir. (1976, xix) The rhetorical device that Weiner uses in Women of Value, Men of Renown, namely, heading each section with a quotation from Malinowski, does, as she suggests, highlight their historical relation, but, again, ultimately it stresses the consistency of their ethnographic questions and the constancy of Tro [pic] ― 40 ― briand culture despite the gap in time and interpretation. The same point is made explicitly in a later essay. What initially astounded me upon my arrival in Kiriwina was the striking similarity between a Kiriwina village in 1971 and Malinowski s descriptions and photographs of the same village in 1922. Although superficially some things had changed (an airstrip, tourists, some Western clothing) everything else was as if nothing was changed. (Weiner 1980, 272) The introductory notes to this later essay situate the Massim in Melanesian colonial history cataloging the successive influences of whalers, pearlers and bêche de mer traders, gold prospectors, and labor recruiters from the 1850s; Christian missions from 1894; and the controls of government from the establishment of a British colonial administration post at Losuia in 1906 to the Massim s incorporation within the ... The data is sufficiently accurate and fits the ratio from the above table very closely. The expected ratios for male and female Drosophila were the same so there is no difference in gender ratios. Discussion: The experiment tested Mendel s Laws of Inheritance using two mutant recessive traits, dumpy wings and sepia eyes. The Laws of Inheritance state that: alleles from an organism will separate during the formation of gametes and genes that are different will assort independently from each other when gametes are formed. According to these laws, Drosophila mutant traits should assort independently and segregate. • 8. The Story of an Hour In The Story of an Hour, Kate Chopin suggests that in certain scenarios, the death of a loved one may be a blessing in disguise. Possible situations may include an abusive relationship, or an unhappy marriage, as the story suggests. Although the circumstances throughout the story might lead the reader to believe that Louise s husband s death would cause her great pain, ironically, when she hears the news, she feels a sense of euphoria. This suggests that death may not always cause agony. Louise s characteristics add to the theme of this story in several ways. One of her characteristics is her youth. This characteristic is important because it is symbolic of a fresh, new start at her life of freedom due to the death of her husband. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... But she actually dies because her free life has come to a sudden stop, And is heart broken that she will not be able to live her life as she hoped she could, alone. Another conflict in this story is the role of the wife versus the role of the husband. For instance, Louise struggled with her feelings about her marriage for years. Louise thinks what could love, the unsolved mystery, count for in face of this possession of self assertion which she suddenly recognized as the strongest impulse of her being. She admits that she did love Brently, but often she did not. On the other hand, the story suggests that Brently was completely content in the marriage and assumed that Louise was too. This conflict is reflected in Louise s internal struggle. When she realizes that Brently is alive, she must die. This is the only way she can win the freedom she was struggling for within herself. She dies because he is alive, he is ultimately responsible for her death. For one blessed hour, she believes Henry dead, and in her own mind she sets about rebuilding her future, imagining her infinite possibilities; when he arrives at home safe and sound, however, Louise drops dead of a heart attack. Her family assumes, of course, that the shock of seeing Henry alive after believing him to be dead was too much for her; but Chopin implies otherwise. It seems more likely that ... The causes of such deviant and aggressive behavior may be linked to genetic, neurobiological, psychological, and sociocultural factors. Some propose that peer influences may also be etiological factors to such disorders. First, characteristics of aggression are generally more heritable than other delinquent behaviors such as stealing. It is also suggested that the MAOA gene on the X chromosome responsible for the break down of certain neurotransmitters is less active in those with conduct disorder. Whether a society relies on a singular extraterrestrial force as a god, or many gods who exist as one, each culture relies on religion to calm the chaotic nature of the world. Determinism In Slaughterhouse Five Kurt Vonnegut, one of the most successful and socially engaged writers of the twentieth century, dedicated a quarter century to the examination of one of the most devastating blows to humanity in history, World War Two (Bloom). The implications of determinism strike deep into the pride of man, thus the prospect of being nothing but debris floating through time will quickly destroy any delusions of grandeur. In Slaughterhouse Five, the narrative s non linear component reveals the insignificance of man as the carnage of WW2 rages and the Tralfmadorians, aliens of the fourth dimension, share their fatalistic philosophy. Under the Tralfmadorian concept of time, as well as the protagonist s perception of life, all events are predetermined , and the perpetuation of life gives man the opportunity to spectate every aspect of his life in an endless loop. Or in the interest of brevity, the past, present, and future have always existed, and every event snapped in to order from that singularity. The seemingly mutable progression of time was, in fact, set into place in such a way that cause and effect were inchoate in the beginning although every single cause could only determine one , immutable single effect, a sort of metaphysical dominoes (D Ammassa). The non sequential nature of the novel portrays one unheroic hero while incipient events coalesce into one kaleidoscope whole which gives a portrait of the man as well as how capriciously death affects man (MacFarlane). In Outlander, time travel allows the non linearity but with the added factor of controlling the viewing order. According to the Tralfmadorians, it is simply an illusion here on earth that time moves chronologically (Vonnegut 13). In reality, the mercurial nature of time concedes its linearity, thus making the protagonist s acceptance warranted. Jim is described to the readers as [trustworthy] to the point of gullibility. These qualities are not altered during the course of the novel; instead, they are fleshed out and prove to be positives instead of negatives (CliffNotes). Even though Twain depicted Jim as gullible, it shared the trustworthy and friendship Jim had in Huck. It proved later in the book as a helpful tool, and played a key part in Jim s character in the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

I will also tell you about if the domestic cats could survive in the wild. Lastly, i will talk about how the domestic cats would survive in the wild. I hope you will learn SO MUCH about cats! Some people don t know the difference between feral cats and domestic cats. If you are one of those people then I m here to help you understand. First of all, a domestic cat is a cat who was born in a home with human contact, however, feral cats are cats who were born in the wild without any human contact. It is possible for a feral cat to become domesticated. With enuf human interaction the feral cat may get used to humans but that is not always the case. Some cats just stay feral forever. ... A stray cat is a cat that was once domestic and now lives in the wild, but a feral cat is a cat who was born in the wild and hs had not been socialized to humans. straightdope.com says Assuming the housecat were young and healthy, its hunting instincts would kick in as soon as it got hungry notably, anything smaller than it that moves is food. It would also eat any dead animals it comes across (and its sense of smell means it can find them pretty easily). It would also run away from anything larger than it (except for humans, since it s learned they re OK). The cat would be in as good a position to survive as one born in the ... • 31. Succinate Dehydrogenase The experiment aimed to determine the effectiveness of differential centrifugation and tissue homogenisation methods of separating and purifying subcellular organelles from liver tissue. Effectiveness was determined by assaying for the activity of marker enzymes specific to organelles in each fraction and calculating the specific activities and percentage distribution of each enzyme in each fraction (Watson, 2016). The first enzyme marker used was Succinate Dehydrogenase which catalyses the oxidation of succinate to fumarate in the tricarboxylic acid cycle (Hollywood, et al., 2010). This cycle occurs within mitochondria and succinate dehydrogenase is specifically found within the inner mitochondrial membrane. Therefore, succinate dehydrogenase activity is an indicator of mitochondrial activity (Berg, et al., 2007). Mitochondria are large organelles, approximately 0.5 1m in diameter and 5 10m in length with a high ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The heavy membrane fraction had the highest percentage distribution (93.236 %) of succinate dehydrogenase, indicating good separation of the mitochondria into their predicted fraction and the success of differential centrifugation as a method of separation. A small percentage of succinate dehydrogenase was also found in the light membrane and cytosolic fractions: 6.131 % and 0.633 % respectively. The activity in these two fractions could be due to excessive homogenisation causing fragmentation of mitochondria into small low density fragments. The lower density meant they achieved sedimentation at higher centrifugal forces than expected resulting in separation into the light membrane or cytosol fraction (Claude, 1946). Additionally, mitochondrial activity could be present in the light membrane fraction due to disruption of the heavy membrane pellet during transfer of the supernatant, causing the pellet to contaminate the ... • 33. RNA World Hypothesis In the early stage of development of life on earth on a molecular basis, some believe that self replicating RNA molecules acted as the ancestral molecule of life before the more complex DNA and protein molecules started to evolve and develop. Stronger evidence has supported the hypothesis of the existence of an RNA world during the origin of life in recent years. The RNA world hypothesis postulates that RNA molecules were utilised to store and transmit genetic information, self replicate and to catalyse simple chemical reactions without the help of any other proteins or molecules and were able to proceed perpetually. They have the ability fold up into a complex structure which either catalyses a chemical reaction or binds another molecule, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Both of them are used to store and regulate the use of genetic information in a living organism. They are both constructed using nearly the same molecular structure, having phosphate groups and sugars linked together to form a phosphate backbone with variable nitrogenous bases utilized to encode the genetic information, the bases are only differ by an uracil base instead of a thymine base. DNA, unlike RNA, is not able to catalyse its own replication so they cannot be the primitive molecules. Also, observing the chemical composition of RNA and DNA, the difference between the uracil and thymine is the 5th position of the ring structure. Genetic mutation occurred so a CH3 group was added onto the 5th position of uracil to form thymine. Not only RNA has catalytic activity as pointed above, it also has the ability to control gene regulation, which is known as riboswitch. The ribosome is one of the most ancient molecules in our cells. In addition, ribosome is composed of RNA and a protein called Ribonucleoprotein. If the majority of protein content is eliminated, protein synthesis could be maintained. Therefore, RNA is the most crucial part of the macromolecule and this observation is in agreement with the knowledge of ribozymes, RNA with an autocatalytic capacity. Taken together, it strongly suggests that RNA has a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Blackfeet For Owl Child s Raid In Fools Crow The cultural collision of the Blackfeet tribes, and white culture forced the Blackfeet to utilize two alternatives for the survival and preservation of their tribe and culture. For many Blackfeet, Owl Child s approach was very appealing, and he advocated war, retaliation, and resistance towards the overwhelming Napikwan menace. Moreover, Owl Child s approach was mainly focused on raiding and retaliation against whites for the iniquities committed against the Blackfeet. According to Fools Crow, Only Owl Child had power and courage. He took what he wanted; he deified the Napikwans and killed them. He laughed at their seizers and chiefs when they threatened revenge. And he laughed at his own people for their weak hearts. (FC, 71) This approach was impetuous, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Indeed, many will wish to settle the score in a less than peaceful manner. (FC, 283) The federal government put a great deal of pressure upon the Blackfeet for Owl Child s raid even though the majority of them did not commit his crimes. Furthermore, every band of the Blackfeet was indicted by the not only the government, but the white American public as well. Moreover, the other Blackfeet bands were weakened by small pox, and they did not possess the strength to stop Owl Child s raids. Houston City s History And Background In this group project, we discuss two cities Houston and Dallas about their own background, which we called story and the comparison between them as well. Firstly, this paper will describe the Houston city s history and background, by using the timeline, it is easy to consider the economy, politic, education and transportation for each of the city chronology. In this way, we can finally discuss the characteristic and opportunity for each of these two cities; thus, give them various suitable solutions for the future plan, which we called blue print, to help the city expansion. History of Houston Houston is the most populous city in Texas, the largest city in the Southern United States and the fourth most populous city in the United States. According to the 2012 U.S. Census estimates, the city had a population of 2.16 million people within a land area of 599.6 square miles. Houston is the seat of Harris County, and its metropolitan area is the fifth most populated in the U.S., with over 6 million people. The economy of Houston is primarily based on the energy industry (particularly oil). The Houston metropolitan area comprises the largest petrochemical manufacturing area in the world, including for synthetic rubber, insecticides, and fertilizers. Three important issues stand out when it come to the operation of table saws in the work place and in the home; safety, training and equipment conditions. Mr. John Schmidt was injured on June 7; he seriously injured his hand while pushing a large piece of wood through a table saw in the production shop at work. After examining, the safety report records state the opposite of what s in the written maintenance reports. If there was an issue with equipment the foreman is supposed to report it to the shop manager. Being that the safety guard was poorly designed is my main reason to why the company is at fault. The company put their employees at risk when they had knowledge of a safety issue. Training, secondly, is very important in the operation of table saws. While the safety guards are in place to protect the operator from hazards, it is still important that employers have trained their staff properly in operating equipment. Although the safety guard is intended to protect, it only protects in four directions: from above, from the rear and form the sides. This puts the operator hands inadvertently unprotected from the front of the saw. Training records need to be checked and if they are outdated enroll everyone, including the foreman and the shop managers up for training classes on equipment. • 37. Questions On Increasing Disciplinary Reading 1. Increasing Disciplinary Reading Biancarosa (2012) states in the introduction to this section that as students progress up through the grades their reading in content area courses becomes progressively more distinct (p. 47). A student in a fourth grade science course will encounter different terminology in a fourth grade social studies course and even more diverse terminology by the time they reach high school biology. However, I have often found, and Biancarosa (2012) as acknowledges that many schools do not focus on reading instruction across content areas. Biancarosa elaborates, too often, schools do not explicitly teach students how the reasoning processes, strategies, and rules for achieving comprehension vary across the content areas (p. 47). In order to develop adolescents literacy skills we need to increase their interaction with diverse disciplinary texts. Looking at this from the higher education lens, once a student moves from the college prep classroom to the collegiate environment they will be required to demonstrate comprehension and research skills in their specialized field of study. The best measure that teachers in the K 12 arena can do to assist them for this transition is to increase their interaction with these texts during the duration of their elementary and secondary school years. 2. Multilingualism is easily defined as an occurrence regarding an individual or group of speaker(s) who use(s) two or more languages, a community of speakers where two or more language are used as oral or written form. Multilingualism basically arises to communicate with speech communities. There are two type of multilingualism is seen in our scenario: These two type of multilingualism are: A) Additive multilingualism and B) Subtractive multilingualism. Additive bi/multilingualism: Additive multilingualism enriches both the languages by their usage; e.g. if a child cherishes/nourishes other languages side by side his mother tongue too, then it is called additive bi/multilingualism. Subtractive multilingualism: It refers to the gradual loss of the first language as the second language dominates learner s functional space, in which case the speaker s loyalty shifted towards acquired language; e.g. if a child acquired second language and this language dominates upon his/her mother tongue and he/she priorities and shifts loyalty to acquired language, then it is called subtractive multilingualism. • 39. Pros And Cons Of Gun Control In The United States Controlling Our Guns is not the Way to go Being a daughter of a game warden and also growing up in the rural southern parts of Tennessee, I have always been exposed to firearms my entire life. There is a famous quote that is relevant to gun control, there are no bad guns, only bad men (Squires, 2002). Placing restrictions on firearms has been one of the biggest political affairs in not only America but other countries as well. Firearms in America make up $24 billion of our economy, therefore, we can say that guns play a major role in the U.S. Many people believe implementing gun laws and regulations seems to be more of a disadvantage than an advantage to our country, because gun control has failed in places like Ireland and the United Kingdom. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The definition of gun control involves politics, legislation, and how the use of firearms is being restricted (Charles, 2015). The main arguments over gun control is mainly a relationship between the state s powers to regulate public order over citizens (Spitzer, 1998). Controlling our guns does not reduce crime and violence which has been demonstrated by other countries such as Ireland and the United Kingdom and the United States government should look to those countries as examples. When the Founding Fathers wrote the Constitution, they wrote it based on justice and what was fair to the American people. The purpose of the Constitution is to be the law of the land, therefore, it establishes and maintains order for that provides a guiding hand for citizens (Spitzer, 1998). Laws banning firearms would only be followed by the law abiding. Citizens living in the United States have had access to guns since the beginning when they were used to hunt and gather food and as a mean of protection.
