The Impacts of Boccaccio s Writing Style on the Tone of...
Boccaccio s Decameron is a masterpiece of early 14th century European literature; its bawdiness and
its sheer wit are a wonderful, funny indicator of what life was like in 14th century Italy. However, the
central framing device of the book itself the Black Plague, which ravaged Europe around the time of
the book s setting and publication plays a somber but vital role in this important work. The importance
of the plague to the story is no less evident than in the introduction, which demonstrates the awesome
power of the sickness. Boccaccio s account of the plague during the time it hit Florence is often
compared to real accounts and additional sources of information about the Black Plague, but it is often
left wanting due to Boccaccio s penchant for embellishment and dramatic flair. Furthermore,
Boccaccio s emphasis in the introduction of the Black Plague was often on the unstoppability and
sheer terror of the disease, including how swiftly it spread throughout the country and people s
helplessness in treating it. Boccaccio s writing style is very dramatic and humorous, with a particular
emphasis on philosophy as it pertains to luck. The following analysis will weigh the introduction of
the Decameron according to these criteria. Boccaccio starts the Decameron with an introduction that
immediately demonstrates his artistic and dramatic flair Every time I stop to consider your natural
inclination to pity, most gracious ladies, I recognize that you will find the opening

Psychology And Empathy
Introduction: Understanding the suffering of others and learning how to reduce others pain is a
fundamental aspect of human social interaction that has plagued many philosophers, artists, and
scientists. It is only recently that scientists have been capable of work with theoretical foundations and
provide insights for understanding cognitive and emotional processes influencing empathy, the ability
to share experience and emotional states with others.
Knowledge of empathic behavior is essential for an understanding of social and moral human
development and prior to the technological advancement, empathy was not understood biologically.
Our understanding of suffering and empathy is largely moderated by cultural environment. Culture

Mathur, Harda, Lipke, Chiao (2010) presented participants with pictures of people in emotionally
distressful situations (i.e. following a natural disaster) and a neutral situation (i.e. attending a picnic).
Under and fMRI, subjects were asked how much empathy they felt for the person in the picture using
a Likert scale. All participants reported greater empathy for the individuals in the pain images
compared to neutral images. The researchers also found increased activation with the ACC and AI
(pain matrix) when viewing the images of emotional distressed individuals compared to neutral
images. Studies like these support the belief that perceiving either physical pain and/or emotional pain
share similar neuronal networks. Furthermore, Vollm et al (2006) presented participants under and

Composite Faces Vs Face
Are composite faces more attractive than real faces? Composite faces are multiple faces layered on top
of each other to make one image. What affects how attractive people are? Studies from multiple
scientists all other the world found that maturity, symmetry, averageness, and healthy skin, are
multiple characteristics that make a face more attractive. Maturity does a great deal for a person s
attractiveness. Maturity is how old one looks or is. In order to evoke the nurturing instinct in adults,
infants have become more attractive through evolution. Studies say that the ages 14 24 is when a
person s attractiveness peaks. When people get into their thirties their face loses volume. As people get
older their skin will dry causing their face to

Active and Passive Transport of Molecules Through Plasma...
The movement of molecules have two forms of transport through the plasma membrane: active
transport and passive transport. Active processes require energy, such as ATP, in order for the
molecules to be transported. In active transport, the cell administers ATP.i Within passive processes no
energy is required and changes n pressure and concentration are the driving forces. Processes such as
simple diffusion, facilitated diffusion, osmosis, and filtration are characterized as passive transport,
while solute pumps are a form of active transport. Each of these form of transports occur in the cells
of all living organisms and are essential to life.
The process of diffusion occurs in and out of a cell when molecules travel from areas of higher ...

iii Due to the fact that water can move freely in and out of most membrane pores, it is also considered
a passive process.
Filtration is the process of which both water and solutes permeate a membrane from a region of higher
fluid (hydrostatic) pressure to an area of lower fluid pressure. iv Due to the fact that filtration is based
on pressure and the size of membrane pores, it is a passive process. Within the human body filtration
occurs in the kidney and encompasses both blood and the fluid in the kidney tubule pressures.
Active transport is a process that requires ATP in order for molecules to move. There are several
reasons why active transport is required as oppose to passive transport: substances may be too large to
pass through the membrane, substances may move against the concentration gradient as oppose to
with it, or some substances may not be lipid soluble. v Amino acids and some sugars are transported
into cells by solute pumps. An example of a solute pump is a sodium potassium pump. Within a
sodium potassium pump, both K+ and Na+ are pushed into opposite regions across the cell membrane.
Other processes that require ATP are pinocytosis and phagocytosis. Both pinocytosis and phagocytosis
occurs when the cell membrane descends beneath the material in order to create a small vesicle, then
pinches off into the cell. vi Phagocytosis is the process of cell eating, and phagocytic cells work

Analysis Of The Santa Ana Winds
In the essay titled The Santa Ana Winds , Joan Didion uses a story teller like tone and persuasive
rhythm to lure her audience into the eerie ambience of the winds. In the use of these techniques,
Didion aims to further convey the wind s disastrous and mysterious effects.
Didion writes with a storytelling tone in order to eerie effect of the destructive winds. Didion first sets
the mood, by telling the reader about the current conditions of winds and how they are taking effect.
He begins by stating that There is something uneasy in the Los Angeles air this afternoon, some
unnatural still, some tension (Didion). By narrating the story in the present tense, Didion transports the
readers into the apprehensive atmosphere of the unnerving tale. Throughout the essay, Didion choses
to depict the foehn winds in the first person, allowing the audience to peek into the eyes of a first
person account. This is particularly effective when Didion remanences being told, when I first moved
to Los Angeles and was living on an isolated beach, that the Indians would throw themselves into the
sea when the bad wind blew (Didion). The personal account not only warns of danger of the winds,
but also validates of the truthfulness of the foehn wind phenomenon. As the essay continues, it takes a
turn toward, more factual evidence, in which Didion still maintains her casual tone. In fact, Didion
uses this tone to even more adequately communicate the devastation of the winds. For example, when

Clarification Request Strategy
Clarification: when using the clarification request strategy, the teacher basically delivers a message to
the student, indicating that there s an error in his utterance, so that the teacher s repeating is required.
When I teach English, I make extensive use of this method, because it (similar to explicit correction)
immediately signals the student that he made a mistake, and that he should correct himself. Another
reason I think this strategy works, is that it puts the student in a situation where you are indicating that
he had made a mistake, but you, as a teacher, do not explain to him what it is, but let him deal with
this question himself, and correct himself alone.
Repetition: this strategy, of repeating the student error in other intonation (usually a questioning one)
to alert the student that he made a mistake, is a significant and beneficial strategy, especially when the
amendment is made in front of the class. Humans can identify intonation, as well as the ... Show more

By indicating mistakes in the student s utterance with explicit correction, the teacher can correct the
students to use to right form. explicit correction helped me a lot when I started to learn the Dutch
language. I learned in a group of five people, and at the beginning of each meeting, everyone in the
group had to say a sentence about himself. When one of us was wrong syntax, grammar or vocabulary,
the instructor would correct him, to understand where was the mistake and how to correct it. In
addition, I think that explicit correction is a good and meaningful learning strategy, because the
students get a real time correction, in context to what they read. That kind of correction allows the
teacher to ask the student to repeat what he said but in the correct

After school study for free
As a school we aim to create practical support for our students needa, along with one to one tuition, a
warm place to go at the beginning and end of the day, food, and the enrichment activities (sport, trips
and cultural activities) that some families cannot afford.
There was more of a presence of meritocracy a number of years ago, and most schools have made
decisions to end streaming classes. Purely from a social inequity point of view this is a smart move.
We have already established that working class students fare less well so by streaming they would
more than likely be in the one class. Unfortunately Smyth et al (2004) states that streaming of students
is more prevalent in schools in disadvantaged areas which is the case in our schools. As illustrated in
Hart et al (2007) Government sponsored initiatives to raise standards and improve practice in schools
have placed particular emphasis upon the need to differentiate by ability . DEIS schools have a stem
test for students entering the schools at the beginning. It is clearly evident that the brightest students
are put in a higher level of class with a breakdown of other students afterwards. The schools reproduce
such inequality that even those students that the test do not highlight are much after a later period.
This myself I have witness, where teachers are asked for the top three students of each. What

Marketing Plan For Morrow Energy
This marketing plan for Morrow Energy has been created in order to promote significant growth over
the following years, and to inform employees of the current status and direction of the company.
Although Morrow Renewables has only been in business for 4 years, the firm has experienced greater
than anticipated demand for its products. As we have continued to grow our expectations is that the
target market for renewable energy fuel sources will continue to grow. There has also been interest in
other cleaning processes that would allow us to market multiple types of processing plants in order to
widen our customer base. The marketing environment, as evidenced through the company s growth,
has been very receptive to the high quality plant, and expertise in running of the plants. Over the next
ten years Morrow Energy will increase its distribution, improve its processing features and expand to
include another office site.

Essay about Harappa and Aryans 1500 B.C.E
All the historical cities from older times have many common features in construction as well as in
society, government, religion, and culture. The uniformity among Harappan cities reveals a society
that valued order, organization, and cleanliness. Administrators used the same pattern, carefully laying
out the cities using a north south grid pattern with wide streets and large rectangular city blocks. They
built most buildings of sturdy baked brick molded to a standardized size. Residential and commercial
districts were separated from a smaller area or public affairs. Massive brick ramparts 40 feet thick at
their base partially protected it from the river waters and any potential human attackers. Large
granaries provide evidence of wealth ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The available evidence for an organized monarchy is thin, and there were no elaborate palaces,
temples, or monuments glorifying leaders. Each city was probably Independent, perhaps governed by
some powerful guild of merchants or a council of common landowning, and religious leaders. The
ruins contain few weapons, suggesting that, in contrast to Mesopotamia, war was uncommon. But
some people owned beautiful objects of personal adornment, such as necklaces and beads, while
others apparently lacked such valuable possessions. the ruins also contain many toys made from clay
or wood, indicating a prosperous society that valued leisure for children. Harappan society had
unusual gender relations for that era, different from the rigid patriarchies that characterized
Mesopotamia or China as governments grew more powerful. Apparently, Harappan husbands moved
into their wives households after marriage, a practice that suggests a matrilineal system. Yet some
customs harmed women. A least some Harappans may have practiced sati, the custom of a widow
killing herself by jumping onto the funeral pyre as her dead husband is being cremated. Harappan city
dwellers developed an artistic appreciation, mixing art with religion and even commerce. They made
small, square, clay seals, possibly used by merchants for branding their wares; some of the seals
contain brilliant portraits of indigenous animals, indulging bulls and water buffaloes as well as the
tigers, elephants, and

Comparing Steinbeck s Of Mice And Men
Of Mice And Men, both the movie and the book are of great quality and go into the vast detail of the
characters and the main themes in both of these great works. Since this is a report is is based off of an
opinion, and means by no means, any offence to either the book or the movie. This report will be
about the movie and the book. The movie is about two men who travel and work together. They also
get into quite a bit of trouble together. The main characters are two men named Lennie and George.
George is a sharp rugged faced man, with a sharp tongue to complement his handsome features.
Lennie is his traveling partner and friend. Lennie is tall and big with a bland face and a blank childlike
mind. This characteristic shows in one scene where he has a dead mouse in his pocket and his excuse
is it is soft. George shows his personality in the same scene when he throws the mouse and speaks his
mind, but in the book the mouse is thrown over a small creek. The book is the greater of the two but
the directors did a great job trying to stay as close as possible to the book. They also stayed on the
theme of loneliness and isolation so that the movie would be as close to the book as possible. ... Show

parts in the book. These small changes agitate people who read the book first. So warning alert watch
the movie first. Besides the movie leaving out these minute details the movie follows the book very
closely. Novel wise the book is excellent. As far as ratings go is was really welly viewed. There were
no grammar mistakes and slang was properly used. The only flaw was the ending. Just saying. But all
in all the movie did not include some of the minor details that made the book so wonderful. In that

James M. Cain s Double Indemnity
Double Indemnity (1994) is a movie director by Billy Wilder with his screenwriting partner Raymond
Chandler, which is based on James M. Cain s famous novel. The main storylines in the book and the
movie are roughly the same; it talks about how an experienced insurance seller Walter helps a
housewife Phyllis to murder her husband to get the double indemnity.
There are still many notable changes in the transition from book to film, like characters action, plot,
style, and relationship between anti hero and femme fatale in the novel are all more complex than the
movie. For example, in Cain s novel, Phyllis is a complete ruthless murderer because she is
responsible for almost ten people deaths. However, in the film, it does not mention Phyllis past
murders. So in the book, she is more murderous, which exactly shows how a femme fatale looks like.

Reinstating the Military Draft
Reinstating the Military Draft
The military draft has been used several times throughout the United States history. It has been used
for different conflicts such as the World Wars, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. By 1973, the
country switched to an all volunteer military service, abandoning the concept of the military draft
(Brisbane, par. 1). Congressman Charles Rangel planned to introduce a legislation calling for the draft
reinstatement. If a military draft is reinstated, everyone, no matter what social class the person is, will
have to do his or her part in the defense of our country.
Of course there are people who oppose the military draft by saying that it is not very democratic and
that it violates the freedom this country ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For example, people who do not want to fight are unlikely to be very motivated, whereas volunteer
armies are far more likely to be patriotic and motivated. Citizens who may have been very patriotic
may become disillusioned with their country after being forced to participate in a war they do not want
to fight in. (Richards, par. 4).
The people that favor the military draft, such as former talk show host Montell Williams, who is a
retired Naval officer himself who started with the U.S. Marines say that the armed forces are too
stressed with fighting two wars at the same time. Montell Williams said, Why don t we spread out that
stress and start making more people put on the uniform and defend this democracy? ( Reinstating
DRAFT Could Stop Bad Military Behavior, par. 3). Having to fight 2 unpopular wars attract very few
people to join the military out of desperation, therefore the same soldiers are being sent multiple times
to the areas of conflict, bringing more stress to the soldiers and the families they leave behind. People
in higher social class have no need to join the military service and take advantage of its benefits;
therefore, the majority of the service members that compose our military are the lower class. In the
case of a military draft reinstatement, the military itself will be one of the main beneficiaries. It will
receive a marked increase in its force strength. It will get an influx of young women and men for

Child Sexual Abuse Within Institutions
Numerous problems are connected with the issue of child sexual abuse. It is both a public health
problem and a children s rights issue. Child sexual abuse refers to any act by a person using their
authority or power over a child or young person to engage them in any form of sexual activity
(DEECD and DHS, 2010). Victims of sexual abuse suffer serious psychological and physical
consequences. This paper discusses the factors which facilitate or prevent the identification and
reporting of child sexual abuse within institutions. The paper also analyses the framework for
strengthening child protection practices in schools by increasing the capacity of the professionals for
proactive work towards creating child safe organisations.
DEECD and DHS, 2010 Physical evidence:
Certain physical signs like injury to the genital or rectal areas , bleeding or discharge from vaginal or
rectal areas and bruising and other injury to breasts, buttocks and thighs may be present because of
sexual abuse. Some children may wear extra layers of clothing to hide their injuries and may refuse to
remove excess clothing in hot weather. Presence of foreign bodies in vagina and/or rectum ,
inflammation in the genital area and sexually transmitted diseases are also strong indicators of sexual
abuse. Pregnancy in very young adolescents forms a strong ground for suspicion of sexual abuse.

The Bombing Of The United States
For years people have looked for something to for sure symbolizes safety; or look up to and after
searching they finally found it on January 15, 1943 and that were the Pentagon. The reason is because
the Pentagon was built to be the headquarters of the USA department of defense which makes people
feel safe. Therefore, on September 11, 2001 the most mind blowing attack happen that hit the
Pentagon that left many Americans in grief. This left many Americans puzzled because this couldn t
have been just an easy plan it had to be well planned out. Therefore, we are going to explore the:
history of the building, also the history of the attack plan, deadly strike, rescuers, and how they were
able to cope and push through this tragedy.
Now president Franklin D Roosevelt in 1941 decided where to place the building which was 60 years
before the attack had taken place. SO architects and engineers decided to build the Pentagon as a
pentagonal shape and horizontal rather than vertical projection which saved lives without knowing
they would. The Pentagon has five floors with many different paths like: oncoming airliner, U.S Army

A breach of contract is when one party doesn t perform the contract in a way which is expected or

the first of these is a minor breach which once this happens the innocent party is entitled to

Colombia Geography
Did you know that Colombia is named after Christopher Columbus? He saw the coasts of what is now
Venezuela, Colombia, and Panama in 1492. He saw the beautiful landscape, and the amazing diversity

makes it Colombia.
There are many landforms in Colombia, each fitting into ecosystems that are intricately unique. The
Amazon river is a habitat for animals (black caimans, piranhas, giant river otters, and pink dolphins)
that are part of the surrounding Amazon rainforest ecosystem. The Colombian landscape is admittedly
in many ways like other South American countries, but is nevertheless astonishing. There are the

A blockbuster study published in the January issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association
(JAMA) examined the impact of exposure to ETS on the progression of athersclerosis (hardening of
the arteries) and concluded, in part, that the arteries of non smokers exposed to ETS thickened 20%
faster than non smokers with no second hand exposure (JAMA). Another study published in Pediatrics
in January estimated that, about half of the cases of early childhood cases of asthma, chronic
bronchitis and wheezing are attributable to exposure to secondhand smoke (JAMA). Smoking in
public areas such as bars and restaurants can be harmful to the health of not only the smoker himself,
but everybody around him. Recent studies on the number of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

A similar case occurred in California where a law has been passed prohibiting smoking in certain
public places. The state law prohibits smoking in most enclosed workplaces including offices and
restaurants. Gambling clubs, bars and taverns are exempt until January 1, 1998 or until state or federal
regulatory agencies have set standards which limit the amount of smoke in these areas to such a level
that is found to e safe, whichever comes first (OCAT). This law was soon passed and almost all
restaurants and bars became non smoking for the public. An identical law was passed in New York
called the Smoke Free Act that banned smoking in almost all the restaurants in the city (OCAT). Erie
County, NY banned smoking in open air arenas, lobbies, and all enclosed places of employment. Also,
bars must limit their smoking section to only 20% of the whole bar (OCAT). Limiting smoking in
areas like bars and restaurants would lead to the assumption that the business will also be limited. On
the contrary though, researchers at Cornell University found that a smokefree policy for restaurants
attracts more business and revenue that it drives away (Cornell). Contrary to belief, cutting out the
smoking completely in some public places had a more economically beneficial effect rather than a
harmful one. Smokers seem to be able to go smoke free in public areas to comply with the non smoker
s point of view. Researchers Stanton

Airline Alliances
Airline Alliances an Analysis
Introduction:
Liberalisation of the Airline Market now allows carriers to engage in alliances to form more powerful
synergy s and capture a larger share of the market. Since the introduction of The Airline Deregulation
Act in 1978 in North America and similar acts worldwide the aviation industry has become one of the
fastest growing industries. The main objective of this was to allow the market place to influence the
development of airlines. The main development from this was that airlines find it more beneficial if
they join alliances. In this report I will discuss why airlines engage in alliances, identify the strategic
benefits of alliances and assess their effectiveness.
Why airlines engage in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
By pooling resources alliances can reduce unit costs and achieve greater cost efficiencies through
more efficient utilisation of resources such as sharing landing slots, maintenance teams, IT systems
and labour. Airlines also have the opportunity of engaging in joint purchasing agreements and make
considerable savings. When we look at the Star Alliance which was founded in 1997 we see that they
have made considerable savings from joint purchasing agreements. Earlier this year The Star Alliance
leveraged its purchasing power with the procurement of new economy class seats. As well as reducing
the cost of seat ownership the airline will also benefit of reduced future fuel costs due to the seats
being made of lighter materials.
The demand side benefits of Strategic Alliances include accessing new markets through availing of
new landing slots. Landing slots are a big plus from strategic alliances. Currently Virgin Airways are
looking for landing slots at London s main airports to fly to destinations in Asia including Bangalore.
Through the potential prospect of joining the Alliance Sir Richard Branson hopes to secure these slots.
Alliances enable airlines to offer a more seamless network of flights to customers due to their
collaborative efforts. Alliances also have the option to use code sharing which enables consumers to
book space on the same flights through multiple airlines websites.
Effectiveness of alliances:

Advantages Of Representative Democracy
Representative democracy is a modified version of our government now. It is a type of democracy
founded on the principle of elected officials representing a group of people, as opposed to direct
democracy. This is very similar to what goes on now because of the two parties and the election. The
Greeks came up with the representative government as a solution for the direct democracy. The
democratic democracy was a form of government where all eligible citizens had to vote for every
issue. It was very impractical because the minority would have no say in this due to the fact that
everyone is voting. With everyone voting this makes the cost go up and corruption would still occur.
This was a problem because imagine having to vote on every single issue and in a country as big as
the U.S. it certainly wouldn t work. This is why the representative democracy was a better fit than the
direct democracy.
Conservatism is an ideology of representative democracy. They believe in a lot of different things such
as personal responsibility, a limited government, free markets, individual liberty, traditional American
values, and a strong national defense. They also think the government s role should be to provide
people with freedom necessary for them to achieve their own goals. Conservative policies generally
want the individual to solve their own problems. A free market produces more economic growth, more
jobs, and higher standards of living than any other systems and excessive

Letter From Birmingham Jail
In Letter from Birmingham Jail, Martin Luther King, Jr. refutes the condemnatory claims made by
eight white Alabama clergymen. By appealing to ethos, logos, and pathos King argues that he is not an
outsider and that the experience of African Americans in segregated Birmingham warrants well
intentioned demonstration and civil disobedience. In doing so, he calls attention to the clergymen s
hypocrisy and firmly garners their respect and understanding. Martin Luther King gains the clergymen
s trust and belief by establishing his moral character through ethos. King first accomplishes this by
employing a tone of respect. He addresses the clergymen in the beginning paragraph as men of
genuine good will whose criticisms are sincerely set forth (6 7). This makes the clergymen feel that
their integrity and their concerns are heavily valued. When King later denounces their beliefs and
actions, they are more likely to accept it as King s effort to achieve understanding between the two
groups rather than an attack on their personal characteristics. A reverent tone is further built with King
s choice to refer to the clergymen as sirs (121), my Christian and Jewish brothers (175), and other
honorifics throughout the letter. Even as his frustration escalates, using these titles compel the white
clergymen to continue reading the arguments, believing the writer because the writer believes in their
morality. Another major ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Early on, his polite attitude and Christian knowledge develop the necessary ethos to turn the
clergymen into receptive readers. He then uses logos to support his central claim that demonstration
and civil disobedience is rightfully justified. Appealing to pathos, he evokes emotion and pinpoints the
clergymen s hypocrisy, cohesively creating a complete argument that inspires support for the civil
rights

Was The Transition From Alcohol To Coffee Affected...
Coffee was already popular in the Arab world since the mid 1500s when Europeans smuggled in
coffee beans from an Arab port. The role of coffeehouses as meeting places sources of news was also
adopted by Europeans, and the respectable, intellectual, and non alcoholic environment associated
with coffeehouses helped coffee spread into Britain, Italy and France.
The transition from alcohol to coffee impacted Europe s development because it greatly increased
people s productivity. While alcohol compromised people s ability to think clearly and comprehend
things, caffeine sharpened the drinker s mind and allowed people to stay more alert, and therefore
more productive.
The massive demand for coffee beans created competition between many different

Biological Weapons Vs Nuclear Weapons
Terrorists would be more likely to utilize a biological weapon over a nuclear weapon against the

Kostadinov and Galabova, with their features bio agents are ideal as a terrorists weapons undoubtedly

The Independence Of Internal Audit
Independence is a very important element in auditing. Because of the Enron Corporation and other
scandals, independence of auditors becomes a vital issue in the audit industry. It is difficult to achieve
independent for auditors as there is the fact that the client pays the audit fee. In this essay, we will
focus on the independence of internal audit.
Internal audit plays an important role in a company. According to the IIA (1999), Internal auditing is
an independent, objective assurance and consulting activity designed to add value and improve an
organization s operations. It helps an organization accomplish its objectives by bringing a systematic,
disciplined approach to evaluate and improve the effectiveness of risk management, ... Show more

The auditing profession promotes the principle of independence to define, defend, and extend the
profession (Sikka and Willmott, 1995). Independence is the most priceless asset in the auditing
profession and the basic principle that supports the reputation of the auditing profession in the public
eye. Auditors protect the public s confidence in such services by conducting an auditing work
independently. In fact, the capability of the profession depends on how it can ensure the principle of
independence.
In the ideal circumstances, the person performing an audit should have no relationship to the party
being audited. The lack of a relationship prevents bias entering into the audit findings. In corporate
settings, a company hires an internal auditor or establishes a contract to purchase internal or external
audit services, an agency relationship is formed. Governmental rules, professional ethics policies and
industry standards are put into place to further promote auditor objectivity in these situations.
Internal auditors are directly hired or contract employees of the company being audited. Their overall
objectivity might be doubtful as they need to satisfy management levels to get paid. Rules to minimize
bias focus on eliminating conflicts of interest. The audit result will be questionable when there is
conflict of interest between auditors and their employers. Effective internal auditors cannot audit their
own work or processes, functions

With headlines of the nation s press predicting the new academic year to be one of greater turmoil than

  • 2. The Impacts of Boccaccio s Writing Style on the Tone of... Boccaccio s Decameron is a masterpiece of early 14th century European literature; its bawdiness and its sheer wit are a wonderful, funny indicator of what life was like in 14th century Italy. However, the central framing device of the book itself the Black Plague, which ravaged Europe around the time of the book s setting and publication plays a somber but vital role in this important work. The importance of the plague to the story is no less evident than in the introduction, which demonstrates the awesome power of the sickness. Boccaccio s account of the plague during the time it hit Florence is often compared to real accounts and additional sources of information about the Black Plague, but it is often left wanting due to Boccaccio s penchant for embellishment and dramatic flair. Furthermore, Boccaccio s emphasis in the introduction of the Black Plague was often on the unstoppability and sheer terror of the disease, including how swiftly it spread throughout the country and people s helplessness in treating it. Boccaccio s writing style is very dramatic and humorous, with a particular emphasis on philosophy as it pertains to luck. The following analysis will weigh the introduction of the Decameron according to these criteria. Boccaccio starts the Decameron with an introduction that immediately demonstrates his artistic and dramatic flair Every time I stop to consider your natural inclination to pity, most gracious ladies, I recognize that you will find the opening ... • 3. Psychology And Empathy Introduction: Understanding the suffering of others and learning how to reduce others pain is a fundamental aspect of human social interaction that has plagued many philosophers, artists, and scientists. It is only recently that scientists have been capable of work with theoretical foundations and provide insights for understanding cognitive and emotional processes influencing empathy, the ability to share experience and emotional states with others. Knowledge of empathic behavior is essential for an understanding of social and moral human development and prior to the technological advancement, empathy was not understood biologically. Our understanding of suffering and empathy is largely moderated by cultural environment. Culture can condition ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Mathur, Harda, Lipke, Chiao (2010) presented participants with pictures of people in emotionally distressful situations (i.e. following a natural disaster) and a neutral situation (i.e. attending a picnic). All participants reported greater empathy for the individuals in the pain images compared to neutral images. The researchers also found increased activation with the ACC and AI (pain matrix) when viewing the images of emotional distressed individuals compared to neutral images. Studies like these support the belief that perceiving either physical pain and/or emotional pain share similar neuronal networks. What affects how attractive people are? Studies from multiple scientists all other the world found that maturity, symmetry, averageness, and healthy skin, are multiple characteristics that make a face more attractive. Maturity does a great deal for a person s attractiveness. Maturity is how old one looks or is. In order to evoke the nurturing instinct in adults, infants have become more attractive through evolution. Studies say that the ages 14 24 is when a person s attractiveness peaks. • 5. Active and Passive Transport of Molecules Through Plasma... The movement of molecules have two forms of transport through the plasma membrane: active transport and passive transport. Active processes require energy, such as ATP, in order for the molecules to be transported. In active transport, the cell administers ATP.i Within passive processes no energy is required and changes n pressure and concentration are the driving forces. Processes such as simple diffusion, facilitated diffusion, osmosis, and filtration are characterized as passive transport, while solute pumps are a form of active transport. Each of these form of transports occur in the cells of all living organisms and are essential to life. The process of diffusion occurs in and out of a cell when molecules travel from areas of higher ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... iii Due to the fact that water can move freely in and out of most membrane pores, it is also considered a passive process. Filtration is the process of which both water and solutes permeate a membrane from a region of higher fluid (hydrostatic) pressure to an area of lower fluid pressure. iv Due to the fact that filtration is based on pressure and the size of membrane pores, it is a passive process. Within the human body filtration occurs in the kidney and encompasses both blood and the fluid in the kidney tubule pressures. Active transport is a process that requires ATP in order for molecules to move. There are several reasons why active transport is required as oppose to passive transport: substances may be too large to pass through the membrane, substances may move against the concentration gradient as oppose to with it, or some substances may not be lipid soluble. v Amino acids and some sugars are transported into cells by solute pumps. An example of a solute pump is a sodium potassium pump. Within a sodium potassium pump, both K+ and Na+ are pushed into opposite regions across the cell membrane. Other processes that require ATP are pinocytosis and phagocytosis. Both pinocytosis and phagocytosis occurs when the cell membrane descends beneath the material in order to create a small vesicle, then pinches off into the cell. vi Phagocytosis is the process of cell eating, and phagocytic cells work ... • 6. Analysis Of The Santa Ana Winds In the essay titled The Santa Ana Winds , Joan Didion uses a story teller like tone and persuasive rhythm to lure her audience into the eerie ambience of the winds. In the use of these techniques, Didion aims to further convey the wind s disastrous and mysterious effects. Didion writes with a storytelling tone in order to eerie effect of the destructive winds. Didion first sets the mood, by telling the reader about the current conditions of winds and how they are taking effect. He begins by stating that There is something uneasy in the Los Angeles air this afternoon, some unnatural still, some tension (Didion). By narrating the story in the present tense, Didion transports the readers into the apprehensive atmosphere of the unnerving tale. Throughout the essay, Didion choses to depict the foehn winds in the first person, allowing the audience to peek into the eyes of a first person account. This is particularly effective when Didion remanences being told, when I first moved to Los Angeles and was living on an isolated beach, that the Indians would throw themselves into the sea when the bad wind blew (Didion). The personal account not only warns of danger of the winds, but also validates of the truthfulness of the foehn wind phenomenon. As the essay continues, it takes a turn toward, more factual evidence, in which Didion still maintains her casual tone. In fact, Didion uses this tone to even more adequately communicate the devastation of the winds. For example, when ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Clarification Request Strategy Clarification: when using the clarification request strategy, the teacher basically delivers a message to the student, indicating that there s an error in his utterance, so that the teacher s repeating is required. When I teach English, I make extensive use of this method, because it (similar to explicit correction) immediately signals the student that he made a mistake, and that he should correct himself. Another reason I think this strategy works, is that it puts the student in a situation where you are indicating that he had made a mistake, but you, as a teacher, do not explain to him what it is, but let him deal with this question himself, and correct himself alone. Repetition: this strategy, of repeating the student error in other intonation (usually a questioning one) to alert the student that he made a mistake, is a significant and beneficial strategy, especially when the amendment is made in front of the class. Humans can identify intonation, as well as the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... By indicating mistakes in the student s utterance with explicit correction, the teacher can correct the students to use to right form. explicit correction helped me a lot when I started to learn the Dutch language. When one of us was wrong syntax, grammar or vocabulary, the instructor would correct him, to understand where was the mistake and how to correct it. In addition, I think that explicit correction is a good and meaningful learning strategy, because the students get a real time correction, in context to what they read. After school study for free As a school we aim to create practical support for our students needa, along with one to one tuition, a warm place to go at the beginning and end of the day, food, and the enrichment activities (sport, trips and cultural activities) that some families cannot afford. There was more of a presence of meritocracy a number of years ago, and most schools have made decisions to end streaming classes. Purely from a social inequity point of view this is a smart move. We have already established that working class students fare less well so by streaming they would more than likely be in the one class. Unfortunately Smyth et al (2004) states that streaming of students is more prevalent in schools in disadvantaged areas which is the case in our schools. As illustrated in Hart et al (2007) Government sponsored initiatives to raise standards and improve practice in schools have placed particular emphasis upon the need to differentiate by ability . DEIS schools have a stem test for students entering the schools at the beginning. It is clearly evident that the brightest students are put in a higher level of class with a breakdown of other students afterwards. The schools reproduce such inequality that even those students that the test do not highlight are much after a later period. This myself I have witness, where teachers are asked for the top three students of each. What ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The uniformity among Harappan cities reveals a society that valued order, organization, and cleanliness. Administrators used the same pattern, carefully laying out the cities using a north south grid pattern with wide streets and large rectangular city blocks. They built most buildings of sturdy baked brick molded to a standardized size. Residential and commercial districts were separated from a smaller area or public affairs. Massive brick ramparts 40 feet thick at their base partially protected it from the river waters and any potential human attackers. Large granaries provide evidence of wealth ... Each city was probably Independent, perhaps governed by some powerful guild of merchants or a council of common landowning, and religious leaders. The ruins contain few weapons, suggesting that, in contrast to Mesopotamia, war was uncommon. But some people owned beautiful objects of personal adornment, such as necklaces and beads, while others apparently lacked such valuable possessions. the ruins also contain many toys made from clay or wood, indicating a prosperous society that valued leisure for children. Harappan society had unusual gender relations for that era, different from the rigid patriarchies that characterized Mesopotamia or China as governments grew more powerful. Apparently, Harappan husbands moved into their wives households after marriage, a practice that suggests a matrilineal system. Yet some customs harmed women. A least some Harappans may have practiced sati, the custom of a widow killing herself by jumping onto the funeral pyre as her dead husband is being cremated. Harappan city dwellers developed an artistic appreciation, mixing art with religion and even commerce. Comparing Steinbeck s Of Mice And Men Of Mice And Men, both the movie and the book are of great quality and go into the vast detail of the characters and the main themes in both of these great works. Since this is a report is is based off of an opinion, and means by no means, any offence to either the book or the movie. This report will be about the movie and the book. The movie is about two men who travel and work together. They also get into quite a bit of trouble together. The main characters are two men named Lennie and George. George is a sharp rugged faced man, with a sharp tongue to complement his handsome features. Lennie is his traveling partner and friend. Lennie is tall and big with a bland face and a blank childlike mind. This characteristic shows in one scene where he has a dead mouse in his pocket and his excuse is it is soft. George shows his personality in the same scene when he throws the mouse and speaks his mind, but in the book the mouse is thrown over a small creek. The book is the greater of the two but the directors did a great job trying to stay as close as possible to the book. There are still many notable changes in the transition from book to film, like characters action, plot, style, and relationship between anti hero and femme fatale in the novel are all more complex than the movie. • 15. Reinstating the Military Draft Reinstating the Military Draft The military draft has been used several times throughout the United States history. It has been used for different conflicts such as the World Wars, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. By 1973, the country switched to an all volunteer military service, abandoning the concept of the military draft (Brisbane, par. 1). Congressman Charles Rangel planned to introduce a legislation calling for the draft reinstatement. If a military draft is reinstated, everyone, no matter what social class the person is, will have to do his or her part in the defense of our country. Citizens who may have been very patriotic may become disillusioned with their country after being forced to participate in a war they do not want to fight in. (Richards, par. 4). The people that favor the military draft, such as former talk show host Montell Williams, who is a retired Naval officer himself who started with the U.S. Marines say that the armed forces are too stressed with fighting two wars at the same time. Montell Williams said, Why don t we spread out that stress and start making more people put on the uniform and defend this democracy? ( Reinstating DRAFT Could Stop Bad Military Behavior, par. 3). Having to fight 2 unpopular wars attract very few people to join the military out of desperation, therefore the same soldiers are being sent multiple times to the areas of conflict, bringing more stress to the soldiers and the families they leave behind. People in higher social class have no need to join the military service and take advantage of its benefits; therefore, the majority of the service members that compose our military are the lower class. In the case of a military draft reinstatement, the military itself will be one of the main beneficiaries. It will receive a marked increase in its force strength. It is a type of democracy founded on the principle of elected officials representing a group of people, as opposed to direct democracy. This is very similar to what goes on now because of the two parties and the election. The Greeks came up with the representative government as a solution for the direct democracy. The democratic democracy was a form of government where all eligible citizens had to vote for every issue. It was very impractical because the minority would have no say in this due to the fact that everyone is voting. With everyone voting this makes the cost go up and corruption would still occur. This was a problem because imagine having to vote on every single issue and in a country as big as the U.S. it certainly wouldn t work. This makes the clergymen feel that their integrity and their concerns are heavily valued. When King later denounces their beliefs and actions, they are more likely to accept it as King s effort to achieve understanding between the two groups rather than an attack on their personal characteristics. A reverent tone is further built with King s choice to refer to the clergymen as sirs (121), my Christian and Jewish brothers (175), and other honorifics throughout the letter.
