The Handmaid s Tale Analysis
Fictional dystopias assert their authority through ownership. They own the properties, the people, the
processes (birth, giving jobs... etc) and control nearly every facet of a citizen s life. This all consuming
ownership permits these societies to tightly regulate different aspects of society for its citizens. This
control leads to very limited freedom for a citizen. And yet, one key part of society that tends to be
overlooked is space. While regulated to some degree, dystopian governments and authority figures
cannot truly control how a space is used and what it offers. This can lead to freedom. As seen in
Margaret Atwood s The Handmaid s Tale, several characters own their individual spaces and don t
follow Gilead s rules within that space. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In Gilead, the women, or the Handmaids at least, are not allowed to read. When Offred finds limited
sources of print, like a pillow in her room, she reads it over several times. I can spend minutes, tens of
minutes, running my eyes over the print: FAITH. It s the only thing they ve given me to read. If I were
caught doing it, would it count? (Atwood 57). Despite it being only one word, Offred worries of being
caught reading it. And even though it is a single word, she can spend more time than usual reading it.
This speaks as to how far Gilead goes to to prevent reading materials reaching the Handmaidens.
When Offred receives an invitation to the Commander s office she feels nervous. There s protocol
against going into the office and Nick gives her no clue of what will happen. The last thing she
expects the Commander to desire is a game of Scrabble, an intellectual pursuit. This is freedom, an
eyeblink of it. Limp, I spell. Gorge. What a luxury (Atwood 139). While Offred loses herself in the
game she still remains cautious. I win the first game, I let him win the second: I still haven t
discovered what the terms are, (Atwood 139). Offred, being a Handmaiden, finds herself so removed
from being able to intellectually express herself that she highly enjoys playing Scrabble and considers
playing a luxury . She also recognizes how wrong an authority figure of Gilead would find her playing
the game so well and purposefully loses the second game to throw off the Commander. He however,
enjoys playing Scrabble with and continues doing so throughout the book. He even offers to step up
how far she can intellectually express herself and allows her to read books and magazines in the
office. And even though she should not be reading and recognizes it, he also recognizes the power of
the space his office holds. It s not permitted, I said. In here, it is, he said quietly... beyond

Gulliver s Travels by Jonathan Swift
Society vs. Individuality In the novel Gulliver s Travels by Jonathan Swift, the influence that society
has on Gulliver is very detectable in this book. Throughout the novel, Gulliver repeatedly, finds
himself in predicaments because societal norms and the role of government in our society. Swift
shows how the idea of who people are due to their position in society. Gulliver is an outsider to the
society of Lilliput, he tries to fit into their world but fails, not only because of his size but because of
their governmental treason. I believe, Swift wrote the story of Liliput to try and illustrate to us the idea
that society and government corrupts individuals. This is shown by the relationships between Gulliver
and self oriented individuals and society oriented individuals. Swift demonstrates that the government
has questionable motives, in the Acts of Conduct that Gulliver has to learn it has in it the description
of basically what the King can and cannot do. The first rule they explain is ...the obedience to the king
out of terror rather than out of respect . The King shows the fear he instills in his subjects by the
phrase, the Princes of the Earth shake their Knees (25). The King also tries to rule the heavens and the
Earth, whose Feet press down to the Center, and whose Head strikes against the sun (25). Even though
the king is within his rule, the reader will find the King s methods harsh. Swift is implying that for
men to have control over their government or

What Is The Importance Of Behavior Modification
Goal Setting and Monitoring One of the problems I have always had as a student was procrastinating.
I have recognized that it was an issue before, but I never decided to do anything about it. For my
behavior modification project my goal was to reduce procrastination. I chose this behavior because I
wanted to make my assignments easier. I figured if I stopped starting my schoolwork at the last minute
my work would be less difficult, and maybe my grades would be better. I was really hoping that this
self modification project can make me a new and improved student. To collect my data over the two
week period I used a journal. The first week was baseline data, and the second week was treatment
data. In my journal I wrote down each time I started doing an assignment, and put the name of the
assignment along with the date it was due next to it. Below the next section I included a chart
summarizing the data I recorded in my journal. Behavior Modification Plan During the baseline week

I broke down my assignment during this week, so I completed a bit of the assignment each day.
Bigger assignments were broken down more than my smaller and easier assignments. I also gave
myself some positive reinforcement when I started my assignment sooner than a day before it was
due. I was given some candy whenever I started the assignment sooner. The way I did it was: I bought
my favorite candy, gave it to my friend, and told him to give me some when I came back with part of
my assignment finished. Majority of the assignments during the treatment week were started earlier
than a day before it was due. I felt good about breaking the assignment down because I didn t have to
cram a whole bunch of work in. There were still some times when I started the assignment the night
before it was due. I believe I can continue the progress I made for future

Goodyear uses three ammonia heat exchangers in its production process lines. The ammonia cooling
system supplies the heat exchangers with pressurized liquid ammonia. As the ammonia absorbs heat
from the process chemical flowing through tubes in the center of the heat exchanger, the ammonia
boils in the heat exchanger shell (Figure 2). A pressure control valve in the vapor return line maintains
ammonia pressure at 150 psig in the heat exchanger. Ammonia vapor returns to the ammonia cooling
system where it is pressurized and cooled, liquefying the ammonia.

Goodyear Houston Case Study

The process chemicals exiting the heat exchanger flow to the process reactors. Each heat exchanger is
equipped with a rupture disk in series with a pressure relief valve (both set at 300 psig) to protect the
heat exchanger from excessive pressure. The relief system vented ammonia vapor through the roof to
the atmosphere.
Liquefied ammonia causes frostbite on contact. One cubic foot of liquid ammonia produces 850 cubic
feet of vapor. Since ammonia vapor is lighter than air, it tends to rise. The vapor can also remain close
to the ground when it absorbs water vapor from air in high humidity conditions. The Occupational
Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health

Jim Crow Essay
Fall 2010
Term Paper The Strange Career of Jim Crow by Van Woodward is based on the time period
surrounding the Civil Rights Movement. This book is an accurate account of events that occurred
during this time. It shows how the 1896 US Supreme Court Ruling affected blacks and the obstacles
they faced to overcome. This book shows how the rights of African Americans have evolved over
time. Van Woodward did an excellent job illustrating the events of history with The Strange Career of
Jim Crow and created a factual account of history that is still used in classrooms today. The historical
context in which this book was written surrounds the events that took place during the Civil Rights

referred to this book by Van Woodward as the historical bible of the civil rights movement because it
spoke about the difficulties of race relations and brought attention to what blacks went through to get
to where they are today. Martin Luther King Jr. was a respected figure and had a dream for equality
among blacks and whites. King liked the message that this book provided. Van Woodward writes
striking incongruities appeared between the needs and moods of the black ghetto and the goals and
strategies of the civil rights crusade, as typified by the leadership of Martin Luther King Jr., and
voiced in his lyrical dream (Van Woodward, 193). In 1896, the court case of Plessy vs. Ferguson ruled
that the states had the right to legally segregate public facilities. This court ruling fueled the fire of
Southerners in regards to race relations, leading to the Jim Crow laws. These laws went as far as to say
blacks could not cut a white person s hair, drink from the same water fountain as a white person, and
established a test for blacks to take prior to getting a ballot. The Strange Career of Jim Crow is a book
that opens reader s eyes to obstacles that black people faced during this period of time. Van Woodward
does an excellent job in this book illustrating history. He provides factual and vivid examples of the
racism that blacks faced in their fight for equality. It is obvious that this is a well written book in that it

Hepatic Steatosis Research Paper
Fatty liver disease is a growing epidemic with a prevalence of 20 30% in the adult global population
[1] and in 70% patients with diabetes due to increased hepatic triglyceride content [2]. In patients with
non alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), 50% will evolve to fibrosis, 10 15% to cirrhosis and 5.4% to
hepatic impairment [1] Hepatic steatosis may affect the whole liver diffusely or in focal circumscribed
areas near anatomical landmarks [3]. It can be identified in specific locations such as the gallbladder
fossa, the subcapsular region, and the porta hepatis. Focal hepatic steatosis may attain a wedge shaped
or geographic appearance with absence of a mass effect and visualization of normal vasculature
passing through these fatty regions [4]. The natural prevalence of hepatic steatosis was analyzed in the
abdominal CT scans of 1,425 healthy adults and revealed that fatty infiltration occurred in 9.7%, of
which 68% were diffuse, 9% being focal and solitary, and 22% being focal and multiple in distribution
and the prevalence increases with age suggesting that focal patterns of hepatic steatosis are not rare
mainly in older males with central

Compare And Contrast Voltaire And Thomas Hobbes
Around a round table there sit Denis Diderot, Bardon d Hodlbach, Voltaire, Edward Gibbon, Thomas
Paine, Pierre Bayle ,John Locke , Marquis de Condorcet, Montesquieu and Thomas Hobbes. Most of
them like Diderot and Voltaire know each other as they are in a group called Encyclopédistes, they
share very similar ideologies for that they promoted the advancement of science and secular thought
and supported tolerance, rationality, and open mindedness of the Enlightenment. Denis Diderot would
sit with Baron d Holbach, who is his co editor of L encyclopedie, they would be glad to talk to each
other about their similar religious idea. Baruch Spinoza would sit with Baron d Holbach for that they
both criticized organized religion (especially Catholicism), despite the fact that they may have
divergence on the involvement of God in human affairs. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

advocate the development of reason thinking and science and they both believe that s the right way of
the future of their society, they will also agree on the division of political power since Montesquieu
was influenced by Hobbes Leviathan. Pierre Bayle might argue with Montesquieu about the
progression of the society since Bayle believes people are inherently incapable of achieving true
knowledge while Montesquieu, holding his work Sketch for a Historical Picture of the Progress of the

Doping is a Fool’s Game
All athletes of all sports on a professional level must be required to undergo drug testing for
performance enhancing drugs prior to participating in any sporting event to ensure an equal level
playing field for all competing athletes, no matter the sport. Furthermore, performance enhancing
drugs are illegal and must remain this way in order to keep fairness in the competitive world of sports.
The bottom line is that athletes should not be able to do performance enhancing drugs and continue to
be allowed to performance in these sports. The unfairness of doing these drugs does not allow for a
fair game. Ultimately, these cheating athletes are superior in the field and dominate the other athletes
that do not take steroids and how can you call that a fair game when the athletes are not equal in
performance due to a enhancing drug.
To further the argument, performance enhancing drugs must remain against the law to protect the
athlete s health and well being. If today s athletes are going to be so careless and take these drugs, we
as a society must step in and take control of what these athletes are putting in their bodies. And if they
continue to break the law by taking performance enhancing drugs, then they must suffer the
consequences by possibly being banned from the sport for an extended period of time or a lifetime
ban, which is would a result of their salaries and livelihood, endorsements and possible prison time.
We must take this issue with more than a grain

Descriptive Essay On Robin Hood
Robin Hood
Robin Hood was a skilled man who stole from the rich to give to the poor, which some people viewed
it as criminal, while others considered it heroic, whose story would later become manipulated
throughout time and history. The earliest possible English record of Robin Hood shows up in legal
records referring to criminals as Robehod and Rabunhod . These were common characteristic
descriptions during that time. The first literary mention of Robin Hood appears in the fourteenth and
fifteenth century ballads. In these ballads, Robin Hood was originally a savage freeholder, living in
Sherwood Forest, who constantly got into altercations with the Sheriff of Nottingham. However, it is
unclear if Robin Hood existed outside of the ballads. He has been assumed to be in contradicting
regions and eras, which make it difficult to pinpoint exactly when and where he existed, or even if he
existed. Overall, there is no hard cover proof that he ever existed in the real world. Robin Hood held
many skills which played a major role in his success. He was a swordsman, an archer, and a master of
disguise. Robin Hood minimally would have used two different kinds of bows. One would be used for
hunting animals and the other would have been used with the intent of harming when in a battle or
confrontation. A Longbow would have been useful and likely for Robin Hood to have used in an
attack. A Longbow is a large bow drawn by hand and shooting a long feathered arrow. It was a crucial
weapon for English troops in the fourteenth century, before firearms had been introduced. Robin Hood
used his swordsman skills and wit to steal from the wealthy. He would disguise himself to help play
out his schemes of stealing. Robin Hood was known to wear Lincoln Green which aided in his
disguise. The Lincoln Green would act as a camouflage for Robin Hood to hide in the forest.
Throughout the years and regions, Robin Hood s story has changed. Tales involving him avenging his
father s death, to Robin being played as a kid friendly fox (Disney version) have been passed on to
generations all around the world. In some some tales he participates in missions with the Merry Men ,
as well as having a romantic involvement with Maid

The Little Albert Experiment Of Classical Conditioning
The Little Albert Experiment In 1920, behaviorist John B. Watson and his graduate student Rosalie
Rayner wanted to study classical conditioning in people. Classical conditioning is when two stimuli
are paired and produce an effect off of the second stimulus, but eventually produce the same effect
with the first stimulus individually. Watson believed they were capable of furthering psychologist Ivan
Pavlov s research on conditioning dogs to conditioning humans. Watson was a professor at John
Hopkins University and of course, that was Rayner s alma mater. Watson wanted to justify that
emotions were something learned and not inherently placed in the human mind. According to
Alexander Burgemeester, Watson hypothesized that although it was uncommon for a baby to have a
phobia of animals, if one animal succeeds in arousing fear, any moving furry animal thereafter may
arouse it (Burgemeester). Both, Watson and Rayner fed off of scientist Ivan Pavlov s classical
conditioning experiment. Ivan Pavlov was a Russian scientist who is famously known for his classical
conditioning experiment on dogs, better known as Pavlov s Dogs. Pavlov originated classical
conditioning unintentionally (McLeod). His experiment consisted of a dog, its saliva glands, dog food,
and a bell. Pavlov noticed that dogs had natural reflexes and wanted to point out that they did not need
to be taught certain things (McLeod). The dog s saliva glands were the main implements while
conducting this experiment.

Racial Disparities Of Mass Incarceration
Racial disparities in mass incarceration
Introduction
Mass Incarceration in the United States has been a large topic of choice because rapid growth in the
prison and jail populations, the long sentences the inmates face, and the inability for some inmates to
incorporate themselves back into society. Since the 1970 s the U.S. prison population quadrupled from
158 to 635 people per 100,000, causing the U.S. to gain the title of country with the highest
incarceration rate. (Massoglia, Firebaugh, Warner, 2013, p. 142; Muller, 2012) As the growth of the

Muller s study found that though the number of African American incarceration increased after the
1970 s, one of the causes of the rise that contributed to roughly thirty percent of the African American
incarceration came about long before during the initial migration of many African Americans to the
North between 1880 and 1950. The migration was related to the rise in African American incarceration
in that the African Americans who migrated from the South were migrating from a comparatively low
nonwhite incarceration rate to the comparatively high nonwhite incarceration rate that was in the
North. Though the migration had a direct effect on the increase of incarcerations of the African
American population, it did not cause a rise in the number of white incarcerations, thus causing a rise
in racial disparity in prisons and jails before mass incarceration was established.
An additional study that Muller conducted was related to the number of foreign whites being
incarcerated or joined as a part of a state s police force and their relationship with the African
Americans incarceration rate. Mullers findings suggest that as African American migrants started

How to Effectively Interpret Evidence in the Movie A Few...
Chapter two of Critical Thinking analyzed and expounded on what evidence is and how to effectively
interpret it. To determine the reliability of evidence, one must utilize the five tests of evidence which
include: sufficient, relevant, accurately reported, omitting, and conflicting evidence. In the movie, A
Few Good Men, Lieutenant Daniel Kaffee, a U.S. Navy lawyer is faced with a tough case and must
prove that two U.S. marines (Dawson and Downey) are being innocently accused of poisoning and
killing PFC Santiago. Throughout the movie, A Few Good Men, the aspects of accurately reported,
omitting and conflicting evidence are violated and or affirmed.
The test of accurately reported evidence is present amidst evidence from Dr. Stone, Lieutenant
Kendrick, and PFC Santiago. When Dr. Stone testified on behalf of PFC Santiago s death, he bases it
off of his experience as a medical doctor. He reports that in his professional opinion, poison was the
leading contributor to PFC Santiago s death. Consequently, it was not a statement of fact, thus it was
violated. In addition, the evidence provided by Kendrick is not accurately reported. Before the court
case, Lieutenant Kendrick had ordered Dawson and Downey a code red, resulting in PFC Santiago s
death. On the day he testified, he stated a lie, saying that he did not order a code red. However, he did
order a code red, falsely reporting evidence. Robert McGuire truthfully admitted that he had received

Flat Tax Policy
People have said for years that the only two things inevitable in this world are death and taxes. Indeed,
any legitimate national government has the power to tax its people in some fashion. It is a complicated
issue that experts continue to debate to this day. Higher taxes do not necessarily mean a prosperous
economy. In fact, more times than not, high taxes hurt the economy. The United States should
implement a flat tax policy that is based on biblical principles, because it is fair for all across the
board, because it will increase revenue by discouraging tax evasion, and because the flat tax form is
much simpler to understand. Taxation has been an important facet of civilization throughout history.

In the Church, each Christian is commanded by God to give ten percent of his income back to the

Solomon wrote in Proverbs 3:9, Honour the Lord with thy substance and with the firstfruits of all

quality of corresponding in size to something else. In the same way, the flat tax is based on biblical

Catcher In The Rye Phoniness Analysis
Phoniness in The Catcher in the Rye
While phoniness and loss of innocence are unavoidable parts of life, Holden Caulfield, in The Catcher
in the Rye, cannot seem to accept it which leads him to depression and mental instability. Holden is
easily aggravated by any impression of phoniness and he realizes that all adults exhibit pretentious
qualities. As a result, he tries to protect all children, the only innocent beings in his life, from being
exposed to phoniness. However, growing up and losing innocence are not preventable, thus causing
him to exhaust himself through his useless efforts. Holden s dislike towards phoniness and hypocrisy
in the adult world leads him to try and protect the innocence in younger generations and ultimately
leaves him disappointed in his inevitable failure to do so. Holden often addresses his hostility toward
phoniness in the adult world because he does not understand why adults find the need to misrepresent
themselves or their feelings. At his old school, Elkton Hills, he observed that the headmaster went

Outrage Over the NSA s Data Collection Is Hypocritical in The Public s Acceptance of Data Mining

Everyone assumes that Edward Snowden first brought to the public s attention the actions by the
National Security Agency (NSA) in the mining of public data. (The Guardian and The Washington
Post on June 5, 2013). The release of classified material was called the most significant leak in US
history by Pentagon Papers leaker Daniel Ellsberg . (Gellman, B., Poitras, L. 2013). This was first
reported by USA Today. ( Cauley, Leslie. 2006). There was no public comment at this time and it

While there is the potential of conversations being heard over cordless phones, what should be more
troubling is the potential for conversations being heard over the baby monitor. While a cordless phone
may capture only what can be transmitted through the mouth piece transmitter, a baby monitor has the
capability to capture sounds in larger areas. As phone systems became less reliant on land lines,
privacy issues have risen as to the expectations of privacy by law enforcement. Courts struggle with
the issue of cell phone conversations and the expectancy of privacy especially with the wireless
transmission process. (Sengupta, S. 2013)
While much of the public has experienced or is aware of the potential of conversations being heard
over cordless phones and baby monitors very few complaints about invasion of privacy were made.
This also has not stopped the use of them nor has this awareness guided many in using due diligence
in certain illegal or immoral activities. Whether this is a conscious choice or not, it seems this invasion
of our privacy has been accepted as a byproduct and benefit of the ability of freedom of movement in
our ability to keep in touch. We demand privacy and yet we compromise our privacy continuously.

Ayn Rand s Use Of Rational Individualism In The...
In the novel, The Fountainhead, the author Ayn Rand introduces her philosophy of Objectivism as
Rational Individualism. Rational Individualism is the self realization of one s worth and how to go
about life in the most logical and beneficial way for one s own well being. In The Fountainhead, the
protagonist, Howard Roark, is depicted by Ayn Rand as the epitome of objectivism. A common theme
that has been brought up multiple times throughout this novel and plays a major role in understanding
rational individualism, would be integrity. Through Howard Roark, Ayn Rand demonstrates the
difficulty that most find with relying on one s own integrity and not relying on others to make choices
for you; which ultimately shapes who you are as an individual. In this scene where ... Show more

Consumer s Perception of a Brand Image Incredibly Relevant
CHANGE THEIR PERCEPTION
Consumer s perception of a brand image such as Microsoft is incredibly relevant in terms of a positive
perception on a brand leads on to a positive perception of a product and therefore, Microsoft can
successful market to students. Currently consumers main perception on Windows 8 directly correlates
to their perception on Microsoft, and at the moment it is not as strong as their competitors brand
perception and culture.
Microsoft has to successfully alter their perception to not only be a positive perception, but a
perception of Microsoft that is superior to competitors such as Apple and Google. Microsoft has to

Students have the need to blend in and stand out at the same time, they want to be fashion forward and
knowledgeable it is up to Microsoft to persuade their target market that Microsoft is modern and
fashion forward. Engaging generation Y will increase a consumer s perception regarding Windows 8
and can make it feel personally relevant to them.
MOTIVATION IS KEY
In order to successfully market Windows 8, Microsoft has to motivate students to make the effort to be
interested in Microsoft. Lyengar and Lepper (2000) point out that a lack of motivation can cause
consumers to either defer the decision, search for alternatives, choose a default option or simply opt
not to choose. All of these options do not favour Microsoft in any way. Deferring the decision or not
making the decision at all reduces Microsoft s presence and exposure to the market because this
means that consumers are not willing to go that extra step to research Microsoft. Microsoft also does
not want consumers to opt for the default option, due to Apple s immense brand image and popularity,
especially to students Apple has become the protypical brand leader which only diminishes Microsoft
s perception with consumers. Motivation is highly affected from external competitors such as Apple s
iOS and Google s Android operating systems.
Microsoft should aim to create motivation for students and young consumers to become interested in
Windows 8 via university events. The open days are

Analyze The Ways In Which Television Has Effected Education
In chapter 10 Postman discusses the ways in which television has effected education. He uses the
example of Sesame Street quite a lot throughout the chapter. He begins by stating Sesame Street was
almost guaranteed to be successful with children due to the fact that having children learn through
essentially commercials is nothing new. While the show is educational it is still pure entertainment. He
continues of to say that Sesame Street actually goes against traditional book learning but puts of a
front that it teaches children to love school. It does not teach children to love school, but rather to love
television. Going to a classroom is a place where the children can interact socially and the television
show isolates them, in a classroom

The Battle Of The Bulge
Battle of the Bulge Christopher Adams NCOA SLC 15 005 Battle of the Bulge Introduction The
Battle of the Bulge, a massive German counteroffensive which began in December 1944, ultimately
produced the largest casualty rate in any one battle throughout World War II. The Allied Forces alone
lost almost 80,000 at the Battle of the Bulge. This casualty rate could have been much higher if Hitler
would ve grasped the importance and value of supply and logistical support. As a result, more than
1,500 tanks within Hitler s most elite Panzer units simply ran out of gas only days after the Bulge
broke through the Allied western front lines. However, the purpose of this paper is not to examine

Setting the Stage (The Battle) Arguably the most infamous battle during World War II, the Battle of
the Bulge took place in the heavily wooded area of the Ardennes Forest region. The overall goal of
this massive German counteroffensive was to break through the Western Front which consisted of
both US and British forces. The primary objective behind Hitler s plan was too simply take back the
initiative the Germans lost on beach of Normandy France. A few months prior to the Battle of the
Bulge, Hitler had barely survived an assassination attempt. On 20 July 1944, one of Hitler s most
trusted officers placed a bomb in a brief case and which he left underneath the table during a meeting
(Gavin, J. (2003). The bomb unfortunately did not kill Hitler but it did represent the fact that, within
Hitler s inner circle, there were disenfranchised high ranking German officers who wanted Hitler dead.
45 days before the Battle of the Bulge, Hitler was almost assassinated by one of his most trusted
German Officers, an event which Allied Forces remained unaware of for a long time. Hitler s plan
focused on the use of his most elite Panzer units with more than 1,500 tanks, 2,000 artillery guns, and
an estimated 300,000 to 500,000 infantry soldiers (Gavin, J. (2003). The notion that Hitler even had
the ability to mount a counteroffensive that big was considered impossible by the higher command of
the Allied Forces. This, along with the attempted assassination,

Theories Of Modernisation
SP10204: Introduction to International Development Assignment I
Modernisation theory
Modernisation is the process of change towards those types of social, economic, and political systems
that have developed in Western Europe and North America (Eisenstadt 1966, p. 1). Modernisation
theory is utilised to elucidate the process by which modernisation occurs within societies.
Modernisation theory emanated in the 1950s from the ideas of Max Weber, which proffered the basis
for the modernisation paradigm inaugurated by Talcott Parsons, and intended to illustrate the layered
development of industrial societies. The theory asserts that societies develop in formulaic stages, that
can be easily discerned, which entail increased complexity further down the societal progression.
Modernisation theory is however subject to criticism as it fails to account for the Western reliance on
colonisation of land, labour and resources that yielded the requisite wealth for the scale and rate of
development in the West (Crossman, 2017, para. 9). It has interesting parallels with International
Development as they are both synonymous with economic development and its relevance on an
international scale

Good!! Empires can fall at any point. It has happened before, and it can happen again. Athens was a
very wealthy and powerful state in Greece, but after their defeat in the war at Syracuse, Athens was
completely destroyed (Thucydides Book VI, p.26). After the defeat of Athens by Syracuse,
Thucydides stated, They were beaten at all points and all together; all they suffered was great; they
were destroyed , as the saying is, with a total destruction, their fleet, their army, everything was
destroyed, and few of many returned home... (Thucydides Book VI, p. 26). Excellent quote. So,
essentially what we learn from the defeat of Athens is that countries are not inevitable to destruction.(I
do not understand this phrase) No matter how strong a country is, it can still collapse. Yes very good!!
History tends to repeat itself throughout the years, and Looking back on at past events can help us
understand why some things occur and how we can resolve certain issues. The Peloponnesian War
was a significant event that occurred in history, and a lot of the events that occurred throughout the
war have helped us to understand politics better. Thucydides documentation and interpretation of
some of the events of the war have helped us to understand why states make the decisions they do, and
some of the implications of those decisions. It is useful to know why states make the decisions that

Assess The Benefits Of Volunteering To The Community
Do you ever think of you could help your community? Are you ever bored in the summertime? Then,
you should volunteer. Volunteering is a great way to help others in your community. You can simply
volunteer to help clean up trash, monitor the elderly, help out at food banks and so much more. At
many public events(eg. Fairs, BBQs), there are normally not enough people to help, so volunteering
could help make some of these events possible. Also, it feels great to help someone else in need.
Volunteering can also affect someone greatly if no one sorted the food at food banks, some people
could go hungry. Everyone should have the same chance you have.
Volunteering is also a great way to make new friends. You can also communicate with someone
completely different from you(eg. a senior, someone less fortunate), and learn how they live their lives
on a normal basis. You may even find someone to have a talk with while you are doing your
designated job. Volunteering is also a great way to learn how to work with others because there are

Plant Pollinators
Plants and Pollinators To begin, let me ask you something, what would it feel like not to have flowers
or colorful fruits surrounding you or if they were never there in the first place. Well we should thank
our amazing pollinators as such as the bee, hummingbird, e.t.c. We sometimes don t realize how
important they are to us and that we take them for granted. Pollinators play a hard working role in the
ecosystem and are extremely important. The reason they are such an important factor to this world is
because pollinators are the ones that create and maintain new habitats for our ecosystems. These
pollinators are also held responsible for helping the plants grow our amazing fruits that we have today.
Since from this help from pollinators, fruits and other flowers that are pollinated can turn into world
needs and help out the world in many ways. It is said that more than 1,200 types of plants are grown
around the world for food,, medicines, spices, or even condiments. Of these, about 75% are pollinated
by animals. More than one of every three bites of food we eat or beverages we drink are directly
because of pollinators. Indirectly, pollinators ultimately play a role in the majority of what we eat and
consume. You can also make a positive difference near or around your household. So next you think
of bees or hummingbirds just know that those animals are the ones that make this world better. Plant

Application Of A New Computer Network Linking All Of It ...
Networking is required to make accessible communication between computers possible by a network
connection. Networking allows for many possibilities, such as accessing the internet, file sharing, file
transferring and system communication. Throughout this assignment I will be attempting to provide
information to facilitate the introduction of a new computer network linking all of IT D s premises.
In order to do this I intend to analyse the options available to assess which one, in my opinion is their
best option in terms of both network system and topologies.
Networking System Types
There are two types of networks; peer to peer and client server. I will discuss both networks in detail
before explaining which network I believe would work best for IT D s.
Peer to peer (p2p)
A peer to peer (P2P) network is created when two or more PCs are connected and share resources
without going through a separate server computer. This is a special kind of network type ( Network
topology ). It describes computers that are networked to each other without a central server being in
between.
Peer to Peer networks are very popular with people who want to share files directly with one another.
The files do not have to be stored on a central server. Software has been developed that can even put
together a file from bits of the file stored across several peers on the network. For example Torrent
programmes can do this. The advantage is that no single computer needs to be over loaded

Tom s Eating Milk Character Analysis
Evolutionary: Tom s ancestors are very large felines. Sometime in history, they evolved to become
smaller. Being a smaller animal meant that they had to comsume less food to survive. Tom is
portrayed as a very slim and lean character. He is able to move and run very quickly, especially when
chasing Jerry.
Behavioral: Tom once had a run in with a large dog named Spike. Spike is easily able to beat up Tom
and from then on, Tom is wary to bother Spike again in fear of another punishment from him.
Sociocultural: While it is true that kittens can drink milk, the ability to tolerate milk reduces in adult
cats. Giving milk to adult cats can cause bloating and make them sick. Later in the series, when it is
clear that Tom has grown to an adult cat, he still continues to drink milk as a result from the common

Navajo Code Talkers
During World War I the military utilized American Indian language to have a secure code. This
allowed for secure communications while conduction operations throughout Europe. Prior to the onset
of World War II Adolph Hitler and the Japanese sent students to the United States to study Indian
languages to break the unbreakable code; this lead to the development of a new language utilizing the
Navajo language. Those who served their country were known as the Code Talkers.
The first 29 recruits were sent to military training in San Diego CA in May of 1942. Following the

translated, transmitted and retranslated a test message in two and a half minutes. Without using the
Navajo code, it could take hours for a soldier to complete the same task. (CIA, 2008) With the success
of this test Navajos begin to be deployed in every major operation in the Pacific theater.
Major Howard Connor, who was the signal officer of the Navajos at Iwo Jima, said, Were it not for the
Navajos, the Marines would never have taken Iwo Jima. (CIA, 2008) Japanese were skilled at

The Japanese took a non code trained Navajo soldier captive while serving in Japan. As a POW he

Flannery O’Connor s Revelation and the Power of Religion...
Flannery O Connor believed in the power of religion to give new purpose to life. She saw the fall of
the old world, felt the force and presence of God, and her allegorical fictions often portray characters
who discover themselves transforming to the Catholic mind. Though her literature does not preach,
she uses subtle, thematic undertones and it is apparent that as her characters struggle through violence
and pain, divine grace is thrown at them. In her story Revelation, the protagonist, Mrs. Turpin, acts
sanctimoniously, but ironically the virtue that gives her eminence is what brings about her downfall.

consequently places her on a higher plane (474). A normal day in the waiting room leads to an

Modern Philosophy Of The Modern World And The External World
Lauren Estes
Modern Philosophy
Prof. Corsa As humans, I do not think we know as much as we think we know. Perhaps this is the
reason why in matters of Philosophical research some claim to have discovered the truth, while others
declare that finding it is an impossibility, and other are still seeking it (SE Handout 31). The word
truth in this quote is ambiguous. I believe that we will spend the rest of eternity seeking the truth. The
truth can mean many things to many different people. What is true for you may not be true for me.
Many of the modern philosophers dance around the question, What is real and what is not? Although
there are many arguments for and against the internal world and the external world, I tend to lead
towards the skeptics point of view. I do this on the simple notion that many of the skeptics arguments
are hard to refute. Much like Sextus Empiricus, I argue that we cannot know anything with absolute
certainty about the external world. Those who say that Sceptic deny appearances seem to me to be
ignorant of what we say (SE Handout 38). Sextus Empricus does not deny appearances, he just is
aware that we might not know for certain anything about the external world. Sextus Empiricus infers,
honey appears to use to have a sweetening quality. This much we can concede, because it affects us
with a sensation of sweetness. The question, however, is whether it is sweet in an absolute sense (SE
Handout 38). Skeptics are not crazy humans that simply

A.) What role does the family play in a child s relationship with peers during middle childhood? How
do parents foster or inhibit friendship formation for their children? What are some important
distinctions between parent child and peer relationships at this period of life? Are friends at this point
of your life more similar or different than you parents? While the role of parents is crucial throughout
the whole childhood of a child, the significance of this in terms of the child s development transitions
over time. During early childhood, studies have found out that the importance of parents and
guardians are much crucial for the social, emotional, and psychological development of the child
(Hay, 2005). However, studies also said that as the children grow up, their development becomes more
dependent towards their interaction with their peers. This opens up the question regarding the utmost
importance of the parents in a child s relationship with his peer groups in different stages of his life.
According to Zembar (2010), in middle childhood, 30% of a child s social interactions involve peers,
compared to 10% in early childhood (Zembar, 2010). What this shows is that there exists a transition
from the child s dependency from its caregivers for social interaction towards its peer groups, which
are usually those from his/her same age group. Before, it was generally believed that peer
relationships are important as early as a child s early childhood stage. Nonetheless,

The Danger Of A Single Story By Chimamanda Adicie Essay
Single Stories are Problematic
In the world we live in now it has become easy to stereotype and create a single story about certain
people and situations, whether it s intentional or not. In 2009, a Nigerian novelist named Chimamanda
Adichie gave an amazing TED talk called The Danger of the Single Story . A single story more or less
means an incomplete or inaccurate viewpoint of a person or culture based on a story created from a
single experience. When one hears the same story over and over again, we start believing only that
story. Adichie claims that creating single stories is problematic and rely on power, a single story I
decided to present is how people believe police officers are abusing their power, and I believe the
media is at fault. For one to truly understand a story we must listen to the root of the story. Her speech
made me realize and view things differently. In the The Danger of a Single Story , Chimamanda
Adicie tells her own personal experiences of a single story and how that can become challenging. She
talks about when she started reading and writing at a young age. She read British and American
children s books. When she started writing all her characters were white and blue eyed just like in the
books. It wasn t until writers Chinua Achebe and Camara Laye that she realized people like her,
people of color, could exist in literature. Adichie s says what the discovery of African writers did for
me was this: It saved me from having a single story

Letters and sounds also have a very thin line between them, where Letters are in writing and sounds
can be spoken. These functions should not be confused. When we write the letters are used to express
sounds. There are words that sound similar but are written differently for example Sent, Scent and
Cent or Bare and Bear. People get confused while speaking and writing a word and isolating the
phonemes in similar words. Therefore, in solution people should listen to sound only rather
concentrating on letters. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Consonants are prepared by an exact intervention with airstream by organs that are vocal. This is the
reason they are easily described than vowels. In contrast, vowels are produced without any
interference of airstream. The air stream flows through the nose or the mouth relatively without
hindrance. The difference in the sound of vowels is produce by different arrangement of lips and
tongue. The example of vowels is a, e, i, o and u . Consonants in phonetics are called as contoids
which appears as the insignificant part in syllable. Where vowels are called as vocoids in phonetics

  • 2. The Handmaid s Tale Analysis Fictional dystopias assert their authority through ownership. They own the properties, the people, the processes (birth, giving jobs... etc) and control nearly every facet of a citizen s life. This all consuming ownership permits these societies to tightly regulate different aspects of society for its citizens. This control leads to very limited freedom for a citizen. And yet, one key part of society that tends to be overlooked is space. While regulated to some degree, dystopian governments and authority figures cannot truly control how a space is used and what it offers. This can lead to freedom. As seen in Margaret Atwood s The Handmaid s Tale, several characters own their individual spaces and don t follow Gilead s rules within that space. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In Gilead, the women, or the Handmaids at least, are not allowed to read. When Offred finds limited sources of print, like a pillow in her room, she reads it over several times. I can spend minutes, tens of minutes, running my eyes over the print: FAITH. It s the only thing they ve given me to read. If I were caught doing it, would it count? (Atwood 57). Despite it being only one word, Offred worries of being caught reading it. And even though it is a single word, she can spend more time than usual reading it. This speaks as to how far Gilead goes to to prevent reading materials reaching the Handmaidens. When Offred receives an invitation to the Commander s office she feels nervous. There s protocol against going into the office and Nick gives her no clue of what will happen. The last thing she expects the Commander to desire is a game of Scrabble, an intellectual pursuit. This is freedom, an eyeblink of it. Limp, I spell. Gorge. What a luxury (Atwood 139). While Offred loses herself in the game she still remains cautious. I win the first game, I let him win the second: I still haven t discovered what the terms are, (Atwood 139). Offred, being a Handmaiden, finds herself so removed from being able to intellectually express herself that she highly enjoys playing Scrabble and considers playing a luxury . She also recognizes how wrong an authority figure of Gilead would find her playing the game so well and purposefully loses the second game to throw off the Commander. He however, enjoys playing Scrabble with and continues doing so throughout the book. He even offers to step up how far she can intellectually express herself and allows her to read books and magazines in the office. And even though she should not be reading and recognizes it, he also recognizes the power of the space his office holds. It s not permitted, I said. In here, it is, he said quietly... beyond ... • 3. Gulliver s Travels by Jonathan Swift Society vs. Individuality In the novel Gulliver s Travels by Jonathan Swift, the influence that society has on Gulliver is very detectable in this book. Throughout the novel, Gulliver repeatedly, finds himself in predicaments because societal norms and the role of government in our society. Swift shows how the idea of who people are due to their position in society. Gulliver is an outsider to the society of Lilliput, he tries to fit into their world but fails, not only because of his size but because of their governmental treason. I believe, Swift wrote the story of Liliput to try and illustrate to us the idea that society and government corrupts individuals. This is shown by the relationships between Gulliver and self oriented individuals and society oriented individuals. Swift demonstrates that the government has questionable motives, in the Acts of Conduct that Gulliver has to learn it has in it the description of basically what the King can and cannot do. The first rule they explain is ...the obedience to the king out of terror rather than out of respect . The King shows the fear he instills in his subjects by the phrase, the Princes of the Earth shake their Knees (25). The King also tries to rule the heavens and the Earth, whose Feet press down to the Center, and whose Head strikes against the sun (25). Even though the king is within his rule, the reader will find the King s methods harsh. Swift is implying that for men to have control over their government or ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

I have recognized that it was an issue before, but I never decided to do anything about it. For my behavior modification project my goal was to reduce procrastination. I chose this behavior because I wanted to make my assignments easier. I figured if I stopped starting my schoolwork at the last minute my work would be less difficult, and maybe my grades would be better. I was really hoping that this self modification project can make me a new and improved student. To collect my data over the two week period I used a journal. The first week was baseline data, and the second week was treatment data. In my journal I wrote down each time I started doing an assignment, and put the name of the assignment along with the date it was due next to it. Martin Luther King Jr. was a respected figure and had a dream for equality among blacks and whites. King liked the message that this book provided. Van Woodward writes striking incongruities appeared between the needs and moods of the black ghetto and the goals and strategies of the civil rights crusade, as typified by the leadership of Martin Luther King Jr., and voiced in his lyrical dream (Van Woodward, 193). In 1896, the court case of Plessy vs. Ferguson ruled that the states had the right to legally segregate public facilities. This court ruling fueled the fire of Southerners in regards to race relations, leading to the Jim Crow laws. These laws went as far as to say blacks could not cut a white person s hair, drink from the same water fountain as a white person, and established a test for blacks to take prior to getting a ballot. The Strange Career of Jim Crow is a book that opens reader s eyes to obstacles that black people faced during this period of time. In patients with non alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), 50% will evolve to fibrosis, 10 15% to cirrhosis and 5.4% to hepatic impairment [1] Hepatic steatosis may affect the whole liver diffusely or in focal circumscribed areas near anatomical landmarks [3]. It can be identified in specific locations such as the gallbladder fossa, the subcapsular region, and the porta hepatis. Focal hepatic steatosis may attain a wedge shaped or geographic appearance with absence of a mass effect and visualization of normal vasculature passing through these fatty regions [4]. The natural prevalence of hepatic steatosis was analyzed in the abdominal CT scans of 1,425 healthy adults and revealed that fatty infiltration occurred in 9.7%, of which 68% were diffuse, 9% being focal and solitary, and 22% being focal and multiple in distribution and the prevalence increases with age suggesting that focal patterns of hepatic steatosis are not rare mainly in older males with central ... The unfairness of doing these drugs does not allow for a fair game. Ultimately, these cheating athletes are superior in the field and dominate the other athletes that do not take steroids and how can you call that a fair game when the athletes are not equal in performance due to a enhancing drug. To further the argument, performance enhancing drugs must remain against the law to protect the athlete s health and well being. If today s athletes are going to be so careless and take these drugs, we as a society must step in and take control of what these athletes are putting in their bodies. And if they continue to break the law by taking performance enhancing drugs, then they must suffer the consequences by possibly being banned from the sport for an extended period of time or a lifetime ban, which is would a result of their salaries and livelihood, endorsements and possible prison time. • 13. Descriptive Essay On Robin Hood Robin Hood Robin Hood was a skilled man who stole from the rich to give to the poor, which some people viewed it as criminal, while others considered it heroic, whose story would later become manipulated throughout time and history. The earliest possible English record of Robin Hood shows up in legal records referring to criminals as Robehod and Rabunhod . These were common characteristic descriptions during that time. The first literary mention of Robin Hood appears in the fourteenth and fifteenth century ballads. In these ballads, Robin Hood was originally a savage freeholder, living in Sherwood Forest, who constantly got into altercations with the Sheriff of Nottingham. However, it is unclear if Robin Hood existed outside of the ballads. He has been assumed to be in contradicting regions and eras, which make it difficult to pinpoint exactly when and where he existed, or even if he existed. Overall, there is no hard cover proof that he ever existed in the real world. Robin Hood held many skills which played a major role in his success. He was a swordsman, an archer, and a master of disguise. Robin Hood minimally would have used two different kinds of bows. One would be used for hunting animals and the other would have been used with the intent of harming when in a battle or confrontation. A Longbow would have been useful and likely for Robin Hood to have used in an attack. A Longbow is a large bow drawn by hand and shooting a long feathered arrow. It was a crucial weapon for English troops in the fourteenth century, before firearms had been introduced. Robin Hood used his swordsman skills and wit to steal from the wealthy. He would disguise himself to help play out his schemes of stealing. Robin Hood was known to wear Lincoln Green which aided in his disguise. The Lincoln Green would act as a camouflage for Robin Hood to hide in the forest. Throughout the years and regions, Robin Hood s story has changed. Tales involving him avenging his father s death, to Robin being played as a kid friendly fox (Disney version) have been passed on to generations all around the world. • 14. The Little Albert Experiment Of Classical Conditioning The Little Albert Experiment In 1920, behaviorist John B. Watson and his graduate student Rosalie Rayner wanted to study classical conditioning in people. Classical conditioning is when two stimuli are paired and produce an effect off of the second stimulus, but eventually produce the same effect with the first stimulus individually. Watson believed they were capable of furthering psychologist Ivan Pavlov s research on conditioning dogs to conditioning humans. Watson was a professor at John Hopkins University and of course, that was Rayner s alma mater. Watson wanted to justify that emotions were something learned and not inherently placed in the human mind. According to Alexander Burgemeester, Watson hypothesized that although it was uncommon for a baby to have a phobia of animals, if one animal succeeds in arousing fear, any moving furry animal thereafter may arouse it (Burgemeester). Both, Watson and Rayner fed off of scientist Ivan Pavlov s classical conditioning experiment. Ivan Pavlov was a Russian scientist who is famously known for his classical conditioning experiment on dogs, better known as Pavlov s Dogs. Pavlov originated classical conditioning unintentionally (McLeod). His experiment consisted of a dog, its saliva glands, dog food, and a bell. Pavlov noticed that dogs had natural reflexes and wanted to point out that they did not need to be taught certain things (McLeod). The dog s saliva glands were the main implements while conducting this experiment. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Since the 1970 s the U.S. prison population quadrupled from 158 to 635 people per 100,000, causing the U.S. to gain the title of country with the highest incarceration rate. The migration was related to the rise in African American incarceration in that the African Americans who migrated from the South were migrating from a comparatively low nonwhite incarceration rate to the comparatively high nonwhite incarceration rate that was in the North. Though the migration had a direct effect on the increase of incarcerations of the African American population, it did not cause a rise in the number of white incarcerations, thus causing a rise in racial disparity in prisons and jails before mass incarceration was established. To determine the reliability of evidence, one must utilize the five tests of evidence which include: sufficient, relevant, accurately reported, omitting, and conflicting evidence. In the movie, A Few Good Men, Lieutenant Daniel Kaffee, a U.S. Navy lawyer is faced with a tough case and must prove that two U.S. marines (Dawson and Downey) are being innocently accused of poisoning and killing PFC Santiago. Throughout the movie, A Few Good Men, the aspects of accurately reported, omitting and conflicting evidence are violated and or affirmed. The test of accurately reported evidence is present amidst evidence from Dr. Stone, Lieutenant Kendrick, and PFC Santiago. When Dr. Stone testified on behalf of PFC Santiago s death, he bases it off of his experience as a medical doctor. He reports that in his professional opinion, poison was the leading contributor to PFC Santiago s death. Consequently, it was not a statement of fact, thus it was violated. In addition, the evidence provided by Kendrick is not accurately reported. Before the court case, Lieutenant Kendrick had ordered Dawson and Downey a code red, resulting in PFC Santiago s death. On the day he testified, he stated a lie, saying that he did not order a code red. However, he did order a code red, falsely reporting evidence. The overall goal of this massive German counteroffensive was to break through the Western Front which consisted of both US and British forces. The primary objective behind Hitler s plan was too simply take back the initiative the Germans lost on beach of Normandy France. A few months prior to the Battle of the Bulge, Hitler had barely survived an assassination attempt. On 20 July 1944, one of Hitler s most trusted officers placed a bomb in a brief case and which he left underneath the table during a meeting (Gavin, J. (2003). • 29. Theories Of Modernisation SP10204: Introduction to International Development Assignment I Modernisation theory Modernisation is the process of change towards those types of social, economic, and political systems that have developed in Western Europe and North America (Eisenstadt 1966, p. 1). Modernisation theory is utilised to elucidate the process by which modernisation occurs within societies. Modernisation theory emanated in the 1950s from the ideas of Max Weber, which proffered the basis for the modernisation paradigm inaugurated by Talcott Parsons, and intended to illustrate the layered development of industrial societies. The theory asserts that societies develop in formulaic stages, that can be easily discerned, which entail increased complexity further down the societal progression. Modernisation theory is however subject to criticism as it fails to account for the Western reliance on colonisation of land, labour and resources that yielded the requisite wealth for the scale and rate of development in the West (Crossman, 2017, para. 9). It has interesting parallels with International Development as they are both synonymous with economic development and its relevance on an international scale Malthusianism Malthusianism is the idea that population growth is potentially exponential while the growth of the food supply is arithmetical at best (En.wikipedia.org, 2017). Plant Pollinators Plants and Pollinators To begin, let me ask you something, what would it feel like not to have flowers or colorful fruits surrounding you or if they were never there in the first place. Well we should thank our amazing pollinators as such as the bee, hummingbird, e.t.c. We sometimes don t realize how important they are to us and that we take them for granted. Pollinators play a hard working role in the ecosystem and are extremely important. The reason they are such an important factor to this world is because pollinators are the ones that create and maintain new habitats for our ecosystems. These pollinators are also held responsible for helping the plants grow our amazing fruits that we have today. Since from this help from pollinators, fruits and other flowers that are pollinated can turn into world needs and help out the world in many ways. It is said that more than 1,200 types of plants are grown around the world for food,, medicines, spices, or even condiments. Of these, about 75% are pollinated by animals. • 33. Application Of A New Computer Network Linking All Of It ... Networking is required to make accessible communication between computers possible by a network connection. Networking allows for many possibilities, such as accessing the internet, file sharing, file transferring and system communication. Throughout this assignment I will be attempting to provide information to facilitate the introduction of a new computer network linking all of IT D s premises. In order to do this I intend to analyse the options available to assess which one, in my opinion is their best option in terms of both network system and topologies. Networking System Types There are two types of networks; peer to peer and client server. I will discuss both networks in detail before explaining which network I believe would work best for IT D s. Peer to peer (p2p) A peer to peer (P2P) network is created when two or more PCs are connected and share resources without going through a separate server computer. This is a special kind of network type ( Network topology ). It describes computers that are networked to each other without a central server being in between. Peer to Peer networks are very popular with people who want to share files directly with one another. The files do not have to be stored on a central server. Software has been developed that can even put together a file from bits of the file stored across several peers on the network. For example Torrent programmes can do this. The advantage is that no single computer needs to be over loaded ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The authors that wrote them were very brave for writing about the issues that were not getting talked about. The authors were also very inspirational to women in the time period they were written in and informative to the women who read them now. • 40. Flannery O’Connor s Revelation and the Power of Religion... Flannery O Connor believed in the power of religion to give new purpose to life. She saw the fall of the old world, felt the force and presence of God, and her allegorical fictions often portray characters who discover themselves transforming to the Catholic mind. Though her literature does not preach, she uses subtle, thematic undertones and it is apparent that as her characters struggle through violence and pain, divine grace is thrown at them. In her story Revelation, the protagonist, Mrs. Turpin, acts sanctimoniously, but ironically the virtue that gives her eminence is what brings about her downfall. Mrs. Turpin s veneer of so called good behavior fails to fill the void that would bring her to heaven. Grace hits her with force and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... O Connor is careful to be vague and creates an ambiguous atmosphere so the reader has no option other than to perpetuate the stereotype. Her descriptions of people as dirty, ugly, white trash, and nigger demonstrates her prejudice. Though this Southern Christian white woman is superficially pleasant and well mannered, she conceals her ugly thoughts of class stratum cognizant of what is below her pedestal. A church going woman who treats slaves fairly, she believes her time volunteered and philosophy of doing things for others are enough to sanctify her ugliness on the inside. The omniscient narrator observes that Mrs. Turpin felt at awful pity... it was one thing to be ugly and another to act ugly (473) Ironically, Mrs. Turpin is the one who acts ugly. Arrogant about her station in life, when faced to choose between a nigger or white trash she would plead with Jesus to let [her] wait until there s another place available (472). Silently judging others she is pleased to not be anything less socially acceptable than she already is, and often occupies herself at night classifying people. Mrs. Turpin believed that you had to have certain things before you could know certain things; this consequently places her on a higher plane (474). • 41. Modern Philosophy Of The Modern World And The External World Lauren Estes Modern Philosophy Prof. Corsa As humans, I do not think we know as much as we think we know. Perhaps this is the reason why in matters of Philosophical research some claim to have discovered the truth, while others declare that finding it is an impossibility, and other are still seeking it (SE Handout 31). The word truth in this quote is ambiguous. I believe that we will spend the rest of eternity seeking the truth. The truth can mean many things to many different people. What is true for you may not be true for me. Many of the modern philosophers dance around the question, What is real and what is not? Although there are many arguments for and against the internal world and the external world, I tend to lead towards the skeptics point of view. I do this on the simple notion that many of the skeptics arguments are hard to refute. Much like Sextus Empiricus, I argue that we cannot know anything with absolute certainty about the external world. Those who say that Sceptic deny appearances seem to me to be ignorant of what we say (SE Handout 38). Sextus Empricus does not deny appearances, he just is aware that we might not know for certain anything about the external world. Sextus Empiricus infers, honey appears to use to have a sweetening quality. This much we can concede, because it affects us with a sensation of sweetness. The question, however, is whether it is sweet in an absolute sense (SE Handout 38). Skeptics are not crazy humans that simply ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 42. The Importance Of Peer Relationships A.) What role does the family play in a child s relationship with peers during middle childhood? How do parents foster or inhibit friendship formation for their children? What are some important distinctions between parent child and peer relationships at this period of life? Are friends at this point of your life more similar or different than you parents? While the role of parents is crucial throughout the whole childhood of a child, the significance of this in terms of the child s development transitions over time. During early childhood, studies have found out that the importance of parents and guardians are much crucial for the social, emotional, and psychological development of the child (Hay, 2005). However, studies also said that as the children grow up, their development becomes more dependent towards their interaction with their peers. This opens up the question regarding the utmost importance of the parents in a child s relationship with his peer groups in different stages of his life. According to Zembar (2010), in middle childhood, 30% of a child s social interactions involve peers, compared to 10% in early childhood (Zembar, 2010). What this shows is that there exists a transition from the child s dependency from its caregivers for social interaction towards its peer groups, which are usually those from his/her same age group. Before, it was generally believed that peer relationships are important as early as a child s early childhood stage. Nonetheless, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 43. The Danger Of A Single Story By Chimamanda Adicie Essay Single Stories are Problematic In the world we live in now it has become easy to stereotype and create a single story about certain people and situations, whether it s intentional or not. In 2009, a Nigerian novelist named Chimamanda Adichie gave an amazing TED talk called The Danger of the Single Story . A single story more or less means an incomplete or inaccurate viewpoint of a person or culture based on a story created from a single experience. When one hears the same story over and over again, we start believing only that story. Adichie claims that creating single stories is problematic and rely on power, a single story I decided to present is how people believe police officers are abusing their power, and I believe the media is at fault. For one to truly understand a story we must listen to the root of the story. Her speech made me realize and view things differently. In the The Danger of a Single Story , Chimamanda Adicie tells her own personal experiences of a single story and how that can become challenging. She talks about when she started reading and writing at a young age. She read British and American children s books. When she started writing all her characters were white and blue eyed just like in the books. It wasn t until writers Chinua Achebe and Camara Laye that she realized people like her, people of color, could exist in literature.
