Black Skin, White Masks By Frantz Fanon
Black Skin, White Masks, by Frantz Fanon is a book that explains the psychology of racism. Fanon
studied medicine in France. He specialized in psychiatry. The novel looks at the minds of blacks under
white rule, and the effects race has on French society. Throughout the book Fanon discusses his
experience with racism in 1950 s France. He discusses many concepts like language barriers, race,
dependency complexes, and other controversies between blacks and whites. The book talks of events
that were dated in the 1950 s, but these concepts can help us to understand racism in America today.
In the first chapter Fanon discusses the language differences between the island of Martinique and
France. This is a very important topic, because fanon associates how the language of his people is
considered the wrong language to speak. Martinique is an island in the Caribbean that is ruled by
France. Many of the people who were well off in Martinique spoke perfect French. These were people
with a college education or people who came from France. The locals of Martinique spoke Creole.
Creole is a dialect of the French language that includes the swallows of his r s (Pg.5). I connected the
dialect creole with a dialect that is frowned upon in America, which is Ebonics. Ebonics is Black
English. Ebonics formed when black slaves tried to teach each other the English language. Fanon
wants us to know that Creole was considered improper in and outside his community. The only reason
Creole was

Types Of Investments And Bonds
Introduction
This paper will examine two basic types of investments; stock and bonds, from an investor s
perspective highlighting the advantages and disadvantages between common stock (equity) and
corporate bonds (debt).
Webster Dictionary defines investment as the outlay of money usually for income or profit usually in a
tangible asset such as property . With both stocks and bonds, the only thing tangible is a simple piece
of paper, a certificate. On the surface, these certificates may seem the same, however there is a very
important fundamental difference. Owning a stock certificate is evidence of being a shareholder;
hence money is exchanged for a portion of ownership in a company. A bond certificate, on the other
hand, represents a contract and evidence of giving a loan to a company. Stocks are considered equity
investments and bonds debt investments. This key difference brings its own set of pros and cons to
each of these types of investment and affects their level of risk and return.
The Advantages of Stocks
Corporations issue both stocks and bonds to raise capital to purchase land, equipment, building, or
even pay off debt. However, there are several advantages to investors to purchase a stock in a
corporation over bonds. First, when you purchase a share of stock you essentially become a part
owner in the company. With this ownership comes special privileges, such as the right to vote on who
sits on the board of directors and on matters that could

The Epidemiology Of Autoimmune Diseases
Introduction
Scientists who research the epidemiology of autoimmune diseases have experienced many
complications in their work. In a field where one plus one rarely equals two, researchers have been
work fervently to determine which cell types are responsible for, or at least involved in, autoimmune
dysfunction. The main subject of study by Esposito et al. is the deleterious effects of chronic
activation of proinflammatory cytokines. To this end, this team has sought to characterize and quantify
the cells found in various loci in mice plagued with relapsing remitting experimental autoimmune
encephalomyelitis (RR EAE), an induce murine model of human multiple sclerosis (MS). Another
question of paramount importance is how to elucidate the mechanisms of these cells and their specific
cell markers. For example, are certain cells present only in the target organ? Or did these cells migrate
to that location? Or were there sequential stages of differentiation that occurred? Or is it a combination
of the aforementioned postulates? The authors of this paper reference 33 previous studies; 26 of which
focus on T cells. This underscores the significance of this project. Autoimmune diseases have affected
the lives of people around the world, regardless of age, gender, or socioeconomic status. The Clinical
Neuroimmunology Unit in Italy based some elements of their experiment on work performed by other
laboratories. However, in addition to considering the results from other

Orphan Train Character Analysis
Throughout the novel Orphan Train, there is the reoccurring importance of names for characters.
Niamh receives a total of three different names in her lifetime, each name representing a different
persona. Niamh is naïve and acts her age, Dorothy experiences hardships and is forced to suppress her
emotions, Vivian is identified as the Neilson s child and has a more stable home life. On the other
hand, Molly has a significant name to her culture that helps her to relate to her culture with the events
she has gone through in her life.
To begin with, Niamh was Vivian s original name. Niamh was a child, who had a family that
immigrated to Ireland. Niamh experienced the death of what she thought was every family member,
she was mourning that loss for as long as she had that name. Niamh was put into the Children s Aid
Society that put her onto the orphan train and placed her with the Byrnes family. Niamh was still
innocent and had no idea the mistreatment she would face. Niamh says as she reaches Minnesota, how
strange, I think that I am in a place my parents have never been and will never see. How strange that I
am here and they are gone. I touch the Claddagh cross around my neck (Kline 62.) Her saying this
expresses how Niamh is longing for comfort and has yet to reach the realization that she has become
undesirable. She still acts as if she is unsuspecting and innocent.
As soon as Niamh was adopted by the Byrnes family, they found her name too foreign and difficult so

The Pupil By Henry James
In the excerpt from The Pupil by Henry James, three very different characters find themselves
intertwined because they all need something from each other. Through the eyes of an introverted and
timid young man, James explains the intricate relationship between an old, aristocratic women, an
eleven year old boy who needs help, and our main character who is in desperate need of money.
Through elegant diction and advanced grammar, the author creates a prestigious and elite tone The
third person point of view gives us insight on the internal conflict and also reveals a lot to the reader
about the kind of person Pemberton is. A monetary man that isn t in the job for the right reasons. His
lack of confidence begins to surface as he describes himself as unpleasant and questions his scholastic
ability to tutor a pupil, when he ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Our timid young man later evolves into Pemberton as we learn more about him, and the fat rich lady is
referred to as Mrs. Moreen . James explains the name of the title as Pemberton worries frantically
about the eleven year old boy who becomes The pupil . In doing this, he juxtaposes an outsider
perspective of the characters with specific names to slowly make the poem personable as it progresses.
As more information is disclosed, the more connected we become to the characters allowing us to
understand their emotions and motives behind their actions. For example, we learn that Pemberton
only accepts this job because he needs the money. If he didn t need the money it s implied that he most
likely wouldn t take the job due to his lack of belief in his own skills. The tone of the poem fluxuates
between formal and informal to explain what they all desire. James achieves this by using intelligent
diction complemented with a simplistic undertone, by doing this he creates an opportunity to
implement essential information to understand the

Reptile Bedroom Sparknotes
The three Baudelaire orphans have been placed under the care of their closest living relative,
herpetologist, Dr. Montgomery Montgomery. Uncle Monty , as he prefers to be called, is a short,
chubby man with a round, red face. The children immediately like him. He lets them each choose their
own bedroom and informs them that they are going to accompany him on a trip to Peru to study
snakes. The children are fascinated by the many snakes in the Reptile Room , a giant hall in which
Monty s reptile collection is stored. They meet the Incredibly Deadly Viper, a friendly snake with a
misnomer, which Uncle Monty recently discovered. The three children are each given jobs in the
Reptile Room: Violet is given the job of inventing traps for new snakes found in Peru, Klaus is told to

fortune left behind by their parents. They try to warn Uncle Monty. They manage to talk to Monty

information from his research and fails to understand their claims that Stephano is Olaf. He tears up
Stephano s ticket to Peru. The following morning, the Baudelaires discover Monty s dead body.
Stephano still tries to take the children to Peru, where he aims to find a way to get his hands on their
fortune. However, as they are leaving the estate, Stephano s car crashes into Mr. Poe s car. They return
to the house, where Poe and Stephano discuss what to do with the children. Mr. Poe refuses to believe
the children when they say Stephano is Count Olaf in disguise, as Stephano lacks a tattoo of an eye on
his ankle. Dr. Lucafont arrives and performs an autopsy, claiming Monty was killed by the Mamba du

Compare The Visions Of Cecil John Rhodes And Olive Schreiner
Compare and Contrast the differing visions articulated around 1895 for South Africa s future by Cecil
John Rhodes and Olive Schreiner.
The vision for South Africa during the 1890 s saw for various issues that needed to be dealt with. The
visions of Cecil John Rhodes and Olive Schreiner represent conflicting views about the nature of the
relationship between power and racial notions. Rhodes a British born capitalist, with a vision to
defend and extend the British Empire and Olive Schreiner, a novelist, who envisioned a party that has
a great form of leadership without any racial prejudice and has no attributes of self seeking
enrichments through the use of power . Cecil John Rhodes and Olive Schreiner are both significant in

less than the defence and extension of the British Empire . This vision he had, had included various
genius in thought for the growth of South Africa as well as through the extension of the British
Empire, however through notions of policy, it had become clear that there were introductions and
representations of various factors pertaining towards racial discrimination, corruption as well as
others. These representations through policies such as The Glen Grey Act of 1894 which denied a vote
to Africans from that district and, additionally, restricted the size of African owned freeholds,
restricted inheritance rights, and imposed a head tax all measures devised to ensure labour migration ,
are a depiction of how Rhodes had been accustomed to ruling through the means of oppressing the
natives. This vision for South Africa, by Rhodes, can therefore be said to have been one that focused
on achieving the expansion of the British Empire, the control of white supremacy as well as keeping
control of South Africa s wealth and minerals

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder is something that has plagued the military for years. Coined as Shell
Shock during World War I, symptoms included fatigue, tremor, confusion, nightmares and impaired
sight and hearing (Dr. Edward Jones 2012, 2). Very similar to the modern PTSD victim, these
symptoms can quickly turn life altering. Many things can strike a PTSD flashback, an unexpected loud
noise, and a familiar smell, pent up stress, even something such as driving down the road. According
to the Department of Veterans Affairs, over 1.8 million men and women have deployed in support of
the War on Terror, and since it s begging, over 300,000 service members have been treated for Post
Traumatic Stress. This totals approximately 18% of all returning veterans. As shocking as this number
is, this only reflects the amount of veterans that have sought treatment. Many more turn to other
sources to deal with their problems. Substance Abuse is a very real problem within the Armed Forces.
Whether it be alcohol, prescription pills (legally obtained or illegally), or tobacco, they have made
their way inside the ranks. Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration records show
that more than 11% of all Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom veterans suffer
from a Substance Use Disorder (4). Once again, these records only reflect how many service members

Mohammed Reza Pahlavi And The Iranian Revolution
The Iranian Revolution was the first of many popular civil insurrections that resulted in the overthrow
of an autocratic monarchy which lasted from 1977 to 1979. It consisted of non violent demonstrations
by the revolutionaries until late 1978, due to the shah s decision to violently silence demonstrators.
The shah, during the time period, was Mohammed Reza Pahlavi. He was viewed by many to be a
western puppet who implemented a variety of systems and programs that suggested westernization.
Iran was being transformed under his rule, and there were efforts to separate from Islamic culture and
religious values. However, because of Pahlavi s anti traditional changes, he saw a broad coalition of

Motivate, Delegate and Empower

Review own ability to motivate, delegate and empower others
For any business to be successful it needs motivated employees. They are the single most important
factor in the long term success of an organisation.
Empowerment refers to the employee s feeling of being effective, in control and influential.
Furthermore, empowerment positively impacts motivation, and motivation leads to better
performance.
Maslow s hierarchy of needs provides a foundational theory. It states that all employees have some
basic needs that must first be satisfied in order to provide the framework for further motivation and
empowerment.
There are five levels in the hierarchy: * Physiological needs * Safety and security needs * Love or ...

Herzberg showed that to truly motivate an employee a business needs to create conditions that make
him or her feel fulfilled in the workplace.
Delegation is one of the most important management skills as it empowers the team member to make
decisions. However, the person who delegated the work remains accountable for the outcome of the
delegated work.
Delegation can save money and time, help in building skills, and motivate people. Poor delegation, on
the other hand, might cause frustration and confusion to all the involved parties.
Tannenbaum amp; Schmidt defined 7 levels of delegated freedom which moves from manager
oriented to subordinate oriented. As the team develops, the area of freedom for the subordinate

Compare and Contrast of the Army and the Marine Corps The United States Armed Forces are the

Coast Guard. Although the United States Army and Marine Corps are both primarily ground based
forces and offer many similar career fields, the two branches are different in some very crucial areas.

Both the Army and the Marine Corps offers similar career opportunities in areas such as infantry,

not directly employ health care professionals such as nurses, doctors, dentists or psychologists like the
Army. Instead, it receives these services from commissioned Navy medical officers. The Marines are a
highly mobile amphibious attack force. Marines are trained to attack from the water and establish a
beach head, an area of control on foreign soil. After the Marines take territory, other armed forces such
as the US Army move in to maintain control, while the Marines move on. Marines are mobile,
lightweight, and very rapid. I would compare the Marines to the head of the spear, wedging in to get a
foothold and racing ahead once the land has been secured. In addition to acting as a lightweight attack
force from the ocean, Marines are also perfectly capable of taking territory on land. Marines are
trained for rapid deployment, and are often the first US military personnel on site. Marines also guard
American embassies overseas, providing embassy security and safety. In volatile areas, being a
Marine embassy guard is a very risky job. The US Army, on the other hand, is the primary ground
based military forces. As such, the US Army captures and holds

Analysis Of The Book Revelation Relationship Between...
Dale Ralph Davis, a theologian, professor, and pastor wrote a persuasive journal article involving the
book of Revelation entitled Relationship Between the Seals, Trumpets, and Bowls in the Book of
Revelation. In this article he lays out his thesis as Each of these series of judgments [the Seals,
Trumpets, and Bowls] is primarily sequential to the preceding one(s), but that the end of each series is
parallel to the end of the other series (i.e., that the sixth and seventh seals, the seventh trumpet, and the
seventh bowl are parallel to each other). He deems this view at the end of his article as a Successive
Final view. Davis is taking two views of Revelation, the sequential view, and the parallel view, and
joining them together to creative the successive final view that he and other theologians hold to. He
makes this point in his article by walking through the evidence for each piece of his view. He begins
with the evidence for the sequential view, where he mentions five points that he believes backs up his
view. First, as the book of Revelation progresses, the intensity of the judgments does as well. Which
we can see through the judgment from the seals being ¼ of the people and the judgments of the
trumpets being ⅓ of the people. Second, the differences in the sequence of the series. For example, the
fact that both the fourth trumpet and the fourth bowl deal with the sun, but in different ways. His third
and fourth point involve the contextual clues that show

Mentoring For Senior Professional Field
Mentoring is an interregnal part of every professional field. Organizations that pursue future
improvement and development focus on mentoring by means of inviting internal and external
professionals to mentor junior members. Mentoring is a rather complex subject and often takes serious
preparation on the part of a mentor. Just being an experienced professional is not enough for becoming
a good mentor for juniors. Mentoring is a responsible activity, which requires high levels of patience,
professionalism, ethics, enthusiasm, tolerance and skills. Even though most of organizations mention
highly developed training programs, in practice mentoring is still a new territory for most of them and
often the professionals cannot properly explain what actually makes a good mentor and what efficient
mentoring should include.
The field of engineering is one of the professional spheres where young specialists are in high demand
since there is a growing skills shortage in this field. To be able to function effectively in the future,

Osteoporosis In Sport
For most female teenage athletes, staying healthy is one of the key reasons they participate in
athletics. Playing sports helps with things such as building higher self esteem as well as improved
physical and mental health. Unfortunately, some young female athletes are also experiencing the
female athlete triad. This is composed of three issues. First, there are eating disorders, such as
anorexia or bulimia. Second, the girl may experience irregular menstrual cycles, and in some cases,
the loss of a period for three or more months, known as ameorrhea. The final issue is weakened bones,
also called osteoporosis. Female athletes may experience one or more of these issues. According to a

George Arnold And George Herbert s Dover Beach And Easter...
Some might claim human suffering is a natural part of life. Others may argue pain is inevitable, but
suffering is optional. The speaker in Matthew Arnold s Dover Beach appears to shield from the current
state of despair in the living world through the glorification of personal relationships. The speaker in
George Herbert s Easter Wings appears to simply embrace the world s suffering as a catalyst for God s
mercy, to bring strength and spiritual intimacy through Christ s crucifixion and resurrection. Both
speakers of Matthew Arnold s Dover Beach and George Herbert s Easter Wings lament the current
state of suffering in humanity. While the speakers may appear to have differing beliefs, they both have
hidden fears that place their hope in the afterlife. Arnold s Dover Beach opens with a tranquil scene. A
place where waves crash on the shoreline of the English Channel, and a couple gazes out a window at
the moonlit water. The speaker uses the imagery and sound of pebbles in the surf to create a metaphor
for the story of souls and the persistent, incremental decline of faith that his culture has suffered. The
poem ends with the suggestion of promulgating love in a world of violence and fear and pain. This is
actually a metaphor, for God is love. When the speaker promotes love between couples, this love is
what will help prove their faith, not denounce it.
In Dover Beach, the speaker appears to blame the retrograde of the Sea of Faith (line 21) for the world

Essay about Life Changing Trip
In the summer of 2006 I was inspired to do something that inherently would never have even crossed
my mind. I was born and bred to be risk averse. My parents, the resolute material providers that they
are, taught me not to fend for myself, but rather to avoid confrontation altogether. Their eastern culture
centric and old fashioned way of child rearing has had a profound effect on the way I lived my life.
However, their penchant for negative reinforcement and their inability to show physical affection
never impeded me on having a fulfilling and moderately successful life. One great void, or what I
perceived as such, was my lack of worldly experience. I was eligible to apply for a US passport for at
least five years before I finally decided ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I often wonder what type of person I would have been had I stayed in Taiwan and grew up without the
rigors and challenges that come with blending into a new culture. Only in hindsight do I realize that
having spent most of my formative years trying to be like everyone else around me, I never allowed
my inner self to grow. I was never encouraged by my parents to be inquisitive, to explore the
unknown, and to dare to be different. I have no doubt they were all of those things themselves,
because they are both extraordinary persons, having achieved measurable success by capturing the
American Dream. When I sat down with them over Thanksgiving break, I interviewed them and
confirmed that what they wanted was the best for me The path of least resistance (1) and they felt
obliged to provide that path by shielding and guiding me away from the unknown, even though they
endured and prospered from their worldly experiences. In 2006 I finally decided to take a chance and
dared to be different. This led me to a chain of decisions that literally brings me here today. First, my
employer propositioned me to move to New York City to work for our New York office. Had they
asked a year prior, I probably would have declined the offer due to my fear of the unknown and risk
aversive nature, but not in 2006. With little consultation and input from my parents I took that leap of
faith. Coinciding with this major decision was a dear friend s wedding in London in the

A Criminal Deserves To Be Punished In Proportion To The
A criminal deserves to be punished in proportion to the crime he or she has committed. Society
deserves retribution. The retentionists argue that the death penalty is a proportionate punishment for
particularly awful crimes and they use pathos to make us sympathize with the victims of these crimes.
Paul G. Cassell presents the case of Kenneth Allen McDuff who raped, tortured and murdered at least
nine women.i Louis P. Pojman mentions Steven Judy who raped and murdered a woman and drowned
her three children.ii Perhaps they are successful in their attempt to to lure us in to a sympathetic,

within wich they can change the grounds of the death penalty. So, the same exact crime can happen in
two different states and in one case the perpetrator will be sentenced to life in prison and in the other

punishment is worse than the others? As Stephen B. Bright points out, we do have maximum security

The Value Of Financial Ratio Analysis
When the economy expands, most industries and companies benefit and grow with it and the reverse
is true, that is why it is important for analysts or even individual investors to keep an eye on the
economy to determine when it is going to be beneficial for them to invest their money. The economic
environment indicators assist these investors in determining the state of the economy. In this paper, I
will describe the methods used to assess the macroeconomic environment, discuss the value of
financial ratio analysis in the context of common stock investing and compare intrinsic value and

Employment indicators
The unemployment rate measures the rate at which the economy is operating at full capacity. It also
has its roots embedded in the great depression when the rate reached about 25% (rbcpa.com). The
unemployment rate is defined as the percentage of unemployed workers in the entire labor force
(Bodie, et al, 2011). When people are unemployed the economy loses their contribution in terms of
goods and services. The increase in the percentage of unemployed indicates the extent of economic
hardship faced by the nation, therefore it is important for policymakers to know the number of
unemployed workers in an economy in order to make better decisions in regards to the growth of the
economy.
Government fiscal and monetary policy
Fiscal policy is the ability of the federal government to increase and decrease its spending, if
government spending is zero, there will limited economic growth (Mitchell, 2005). Current
government borrowing shifts the burden to future generations to repay debt. An example of how this
policy has been used in the past to improve the economy is when the Federal Reserve System lowered
its discount rate and in early 2008 Congress passed the Economic Stimulus Act of 2008 (govtrack.us).
The legislation gave taxpayers a tax rebate in the form of a check up to $600 for single filers, $1200
for married couples filing jointly (cnn.com). The hope was that consumers would take these checks
and spend them to help keep the economy moving

pepper. The restaurant sells large burritos and bowls in an assembly line production system where all
the condiments are arranged and all the customer has to do is request what they want their burrito to

Chipotle Mexican Grill as a company is not immune to these issues and has its own fair share of
challenges. The first and most important challenge facing Chipotle is the sourcing of their food
ingredients. When the company first came into existence, it sourced its ingredients from every and all
available sources just like all other fast food companies. This changed in 1999 after Founder Steve
Ells visited a Concentrated Animal Feeding Operation (CAFOs). He was not too impressed and
changed his company s food sources to organic. All of Chipotle s pork is 100% organic as well as 80%
of its chicken and 85% of its beef. The company served 100% of all meat sources but had to make
adjustments as demand exceeded supply. The company served over 60 million pounds of meat in 2009
and over 75 million pounds in 2010. Maintaining such high numbers in the use of organic meat and
produce is next to impossible and as witnessed, the company is already incorporating non organic
sources. A solution to this debacle would be to outsource organic produce from neighboring countries
such as Mexico and Canada. The only foreseeable obstacle to this approach would be cost of
transportation of the livestock (either alive or in a finished package ). This would go a long way in
ensuring that the company remains true to its mission statement and actually serve to customers what

The Negative Effects of Oil Spills Have on Nigeria, A letter
Dear President
My name is John Doe. I am writing this letter to inform you about the negative effects in Nigeria oil
spills have on its people and the environment around them. Oil spills pollute the water, killing animals
and plant life that inhabit the area around the spill. It is important that this problem is to be looked at
and solved. Nigeria s Niger Delta is one of the most oil polluted places on the planet with more than
6,800 recorded oil spills. Millions of barrels of oil were spilled into the Niger Delta.. Some people
inhabit the land around it. The water is there main resource to use. They use it for irrigation, drinking,
and bathing. They use the water for their everyday needs. The water is too polluted for them to drink
anymore and they can t use the water for irrigation because it is killing all of their crops. Multiple
people have suffered from illnesses from drinking the oil polluted water. Cleanups don t clean the land
very well even though they are supposed to clean deep into the ground. A percent of Nigerian
mangrove ecosystems have been destroyed out by oil. The known effects of oil on mangroves are
making the soil into acid, stop cellular respiration, and they do not let the roots get oxygen. The loss of
mangrove forests does not only decrease the life of plants and animals. They also affect humans. The
indigenous people living in the affected areas highly value these systems. The local people by the

The lack of a corporate headquarters and the small size of most of the Virgin operating companies
were intended to foster teamwork and a strong entrepreneurial spirit. (Grant 2005a:325) Branson
envisions that Virgin group has a responsibility to the employees and it develops a better
understanding of the human factor. (Davidson and Griffin 2006: 40) Branson extracts some guidelines
from Fayol to scientific management, such as the Equity (Managers should be kind and fair when
dealing with subordinates), Initiative (Subordinates should have the freedom to take initiative) and
Esprit de corps management issues (Teamwork, team spirits and a sense of unity and togetherness
should be fostered and maintained). (Davidson and Griffin 2006:41) Finally, he follows Henry Gantt
by employing a system that give people rewards for completing their jobs in less than allowed
standard time. Branson s management strategy and the success of Virgin Group were founded on the
ideology of the Business of Trust . First of all, Branson recognized that large companies were more
likely to be mistrusted by their employees, whereas smaller companies often have the loyalty of staff
because of the culture of collaboration. Productivity, performance and retention rates suffered in low
trust firms. While managing in smaller companies in a flattened organizational hierarchical way would

In the second place, the eggshells are utilized in medical part such as tooth re mineralizing, using the

reasons, I figured out a chemical formula for the eggshell. Eggshell is made up of 95% calcium

Tenure in America Essay
Although there are many varying opinions on what revisions should be made to the tenure system in
America, I believe that even though there are many complaints, Tenure needs to be maintained in
order to promote academic freedom and educational security. Tenure is defined by Mathew Finkin as
At the expiration of a period of probation, commonly not to exceed six years of full time service, a
faculty member is either to be accorded tenure or to be given a terminal appointment for the ensuing
academic year. Thereafter, the professor can be discharged only for just cause or other permissible

Unions don t grant tenure administrators do. Too many school boards and superintendents attack
tenure rather than hold their own managers accountable for hiring and supervising teachers and, if
necessary, removing those who don t make the grade. Tenure is granted by the board of education on
recommendation of the superintendent but many schools do a poor job of evaluating and supporting
teachers...Tenure s not about protecting bad teachers; it s about protecting good teachers. What would
happen to teachers without tenure? They could and would be fired for virtually any reason. It s not
hard to imagine teachers being dismissed because they failed the daughter of an influential
businessman or because the school board president s nephew needed a job. In these fiscally troubled
times, what would stop a school board from replacing a veteran teacher at the top of the pay scale with
a first year teacher simply to save money? Tenure is the first line of defense against attacks on
academic freedom. Teachers can engage their students in a free exchange of ideas only if they are
protected from arbitrary dismissal for doing so. Tenure prevents school boards from arbitrarily
dismissing teachers for holding political, religious or social views with which they disagree.[Tenure]
protects academic freedom the way the First Amendment protects freedom of the press (NYSUT).

On July 21, 1861, two armies, one confederate and the other Union, prepared for the first major land
battle of the Civil War. In 1861 Abraham Lincoln was sworn in as President.
The Southern states had seceded and the South had fired on and captured Fort Sumter on April 12
1861.
After the Fort Sumter battle, both the North and the South began preparing for war by raising armies.
This was done quickly and neither side spent much time training the troops. Both sides also did not
know what a long and terrible war was ahead.

General McDonnell attempted to flank the Confederates by moving north and west, and began several
attacks on the Confederates right flank and the center of the Confederate line at Henry House.
As the battle wore on, the superior numbers of the Union Army began to wear down the Confederate
lines. At a critical point, as the Confederates began to fall back, an officer pointed out a line of rebels
who were still strong. He said, look at Jackson s men standing like a stone wall . He was talking about
General T. J. Jackson s men. Jackson would from then on be known as Stonewall Jackson , one of the
most famous of all Confederate generals. This seemed to inspire the Southern troops at Henry House
who held their ground and began to beat back the Union forces.
On the west flank the Union troops who had been moving slowly were pushed back by General
Johnston s troops who arrived in the afternoon by railroad. Civilian spectators had come out from
Washington to watch the battle. They thought it would be like a sporting event. As the battle turned
against the North, they panicked and the one road back to Washington became clogged with
overturned carriages and wagons. The Union retreat had turned into panic by early evening.

Benefits Of Intermediate Corrections
Intermediate sanctions have been a valuable aspect in the court systems. In my opinion, I believe they
have made a difference in the court process because these programs offer an alternative outcome to the
defendant s criminal case. I believe the reason it hasn t made the impact aspired by legislators is due to
sentencing issues judges face from advocates of deserved punishment believers and the fact that
handing down alternative sentences to people with different outcomes could lead to people accusing
the courts of not being equal when sentencing individuals to jail time or probation. The sanction that I

possibly it could make the individual not want to repeat their criminal actions. Other countries such as
Germany, England, Sweden and most other European countries have already taken this form of

situation to be discussed: topic, purpose, speaker, audience, context, and culture. The topic of this
memo is informing the employees of the upcoming retirement of the CEO/founder. The purpose is to
inform the staff kindly about the upcoming change to head off any hesitation from the staff about
Tommy Boy taking over and ensure a smooth transition occurs. The speaker is the founder and long
time CEO of the auto parts store. The audience is the staff and employees of the store, after they read
the memo the goal is that they feel a little bit more at ease and less hesitant going into the change.
They should also know how to handle the change over and what will partake while it occurs. The
context of the memo is that me the founder is leaving and someone else is taking over that has less
experience. I know before writing the memo the employees are probably going to be hesitant about the
change because of Tommy Boy s lack of experience. The culture of the group is that they are a close

This has drawn the researcher s attention to concentrate in the web service selection problem. Some of
the related work in this area includes Dynamic QoS management, Web service selection using
different algorithms. Imprecise QoS constraints allow users to flexibly specify the QoS demands.
Fuzzy logic is proposed for the web service discovery and selection problem. Methods for specifying
fuzzy QoS constraints and for ranking web service based on their fuzzy representation were discussed
[4]. A novel tool supported framework for the development of adaptive service based systems is
proposed to achieve the QoS requirements through dynamically adapting to changes in workload, state
and environment [5] The evolution of fuzzy classifier for data mining is the current research topic. An
application of genetic programming to the evolution of fuzzy classifiers based on Boolean queries is
proposed to detect faulty products and to discover intrusions in computer network [6]. NP hard
problems are termed as finding the set of services for a given composition that optimize the Qos
values based on the constraints provided. A heuristic approach based on

The Importance of Roger Spottiswoode’s Screen Adaptation...
The Importance of Roger Spottiswoode s Screen Adaptation of And The Band Played On
[1] Hollywood is no longer just a name, it is a business, a living entity holding America s people in its
grasp, and it is not about to let them go. Gradually taking on more responsibility and trying to build up
its reputation over the years, Hollywood has progressively assumed the position of history teller for
the American public. This role, whether or not an appropriate one for an industry such as Hollywood
to tackle, has catapulted actors and actresses into high paying, high visibility positions. History has
and will continue to be one of the main subjects that the movie industry has been fascinated with. It is
an alive and very fragile ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The debate over cinematic history still remains, and it will continue to challenge Hollywood,
constantly forcing the industry to make the best possible movies, producing historical epics on the big
screen, making history a universal and personable subject.
[3] In 1993, a small time director at HBO Productions thought it was about time that a movie was
made discussing the broad, taboo topic of the AIDS epidemic. Roger Spottiswoode was the director,
and he took author Randy Shilts controversial journal And The Band Played On: Politics, People and
the AIDS Epidemic (1987) and turned it into a movie. Spottiswoode took the challenge facing
Hollywood straight on and was bold enough to attempt a project that had been passed over and
rejected for six years straight. From the beginning to end And The Band Played On was a fight.
Spottiswoode fought for HBO to take the project on, and he fought with Hollywood to try to entice
actors to participate in it. The fight continued after the release of the cable TV movie, with critics and
the public simply not wanting to know or be informed of the truth.
[4] With controversy surrounding the production of the movie, the fight seeped into the movie and its
evidence in the story. The portrayal of the actors and the fight that each character undergoes is an
illustration of the fight that AIDS forced our country to face in the early 1980 s. With Richard Gere s

Critical Analysis of a Passage from Horace Walpole s...
Horace Walpole s The Castle of Otranto, is acknowledged by many as the first gothic novel. It was the
first of it s kind and many of the conventions used by Walpole, which put it in a literary genre of it s
own, were continued by authors such as Ann Radcliffe and Matthew Lewis. Many of these defining
characteristics can be seen within the very first few pages of the text and for the purposes of this essay,
to identify some of these conventions used and the relevance of this text to modernity I shall focus this
analysis on the passage between pages twenty four and twenty six from the Oxford World s Classics
edition.
The gothic novel emerged during the late eighteenth century and the Age of Enlightenment , which
emphasised rationality ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In Otranto, Walpole challenges his societies views of modernity and transgresses social laws by
introducing the theme of incest into his novel with Manfred preying of his deceased son s betrothed,
Isabella. This brings into play three defining features which became prevalent within gothic novels of
the late eighteenth century: women in distress; women being threatened by powerful males; and the
major theme of fear and in this example, specifically female fear. Isabella, a young, virginal woman
becomes half dead with fright when faced with potential rape and becoming a spoiled woman at the
hands of the powerful and threatening Manfred. Such suggestions, by Walpole s age were seen as
scandalous and caused moral outrage, a thread that was carried through the gothic genre. This new
genre may have provided for many, an escape from the rigid world of enlightenment. It brought to
them a world of imagination and allowed them to immerse themselves in a world which had been
morally forbidden and they could do it from the privacy of their own homes, allowing their
indulgence, and perhaps, immoral thoughts to go unnoticed, providing a way for the darkness and
immoral thoughts to come alive outside of the novel. At the end of the novel however, society s moral
ideals surface as Manfred retires to a convent after the realisation of his sins and order is restored. In
this way, although Walpole is exposing his readers to these ideas, he would

Advanced Marginal Essay
Advanced Marginality creates an empty space of competition and conflict, a danger filled battleground
for the daily contest of survival and escape (Wacquant)
These areas have been established through certain economic, political, and social factors that exploit
the poor; illustrated in Matthew Desmond s book Evicted about spaces of advanced marginality in
Milwaukee. Advanced marginality is formed through globalization, the displacement of jobs creates
polarization between lower and upper class. Those financially stable leave the city, causing economic
decline through loss of jobs, social program funding, and institutions. Which creates areas defined by
race, unemployment and poverty (cite). The jobless poor in these areas are dependent on ... Show

These areas are prime moneymaker[s] for those who saw ripe opportunity in land scarcity, housing
dilapidation and racial segregation (259). The strong demand for housing in these relatively cheap
areas, allows them to charge inflated rent for inadequate housing, ensuring that the lower class they
target can never afford to leave these areas. Legally, landlords were allowed to rent out units not up to
code if they were honest about it (73) and continued this process because renters can easily be
replaced. Heavy dependence on welfare makes them more likely to miss payments, leaving them
constantly vulnerable to the threat of eviction. Landlords have resources at their disposal to constantly
fill their properties with this lower class. For example, Belinda managed resident s welfare, relieving
the possibility of missed payments and brought her clients to landlords, like Sherrena (cite). This
relationship between tenant and landlord subsides when eviction becomes the most cost effective
solution, because landlords take financially losses personally (cite), like when renters demand repairs,
violate nuisance property ordinance or start looking for better housing all of which pose a cost or fine
to the landlord. For example, one family bypassed Sherrena in order to get repairs. Another example is
when Crystal called the police for help

  • 2. Black Skin, White Masks By Frantz Fanon Black Skin, White Masks, by Frantz Fanon is a book that explains the psychology of racism. Fanon studied medicine in France. He specialized in psychiatry. The novel looks at the minds of blacks under white rule, and the effects race has on French society. Throughout the book Fanon discusses his experience with racism in 1950 s France. He discusses many concepts like language barriers, race, dependency complexes, and other controversies between blacks and whites. The book talks of events that were dated in the 1950 s, but these concepts can help us to understand racism in America today. In the first chapter Fanon discusses the language differences between the island of Martinique and France. This is a very important topic, because fanon associates how the language of his people is considered the wrong language to speak. Martinique is an island in the Caribbean that is ruled by France. Many of the people who were well off in Martinique spoke perfect French. These were people with a college education or people who came from France. The locals of Martinique spoke Creole. Creole is a dialect of the French language that includes the swallows of his r s (Pg.5). I connected the dialect creole with a dialect that is frowned upon in America, which is Ebonics. Ebonics is Black English. Ebonics formed when black slaves tried to teach each other the English language. Fanon wants us to know that Creole was considered improper in and outside his community. The only reason Creole was ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Types Of Investments And Bonds Introduction This paper will examine two basic types of investments; stock and bonds, from an investor s perspective highlighting the advantages and disadvantages between common stock (equity) and corporate bonds (debt). Webster Dictionary defines investment as the outlay of money usually for income or profit usually in a tangible asset such as property . With both stocks and bonds, the only thing tangible is a simple piece of paper, a certificate. On the surface, these certificates may seem the same, however there is a very important fundamental difference. Owning a stock certificate is evidence of being a shareholder; hence money is exchanged for a portion of ownership in a company. A bond certificate, on the other hand, represents a contract and evidence of giving a loan to a company. Stocks are considered equity investments and bonds debt investments. This key difference brings its own set of pros and cons to each of these types of investment and affects their level of risk and return. The Advantages of Stocks Corporations issue both stocks and bonds to raise capital to purchase land, equipment, building, or even pay off debt. However, there are several advantages to investors to purchase a stock in a corporation over bonds. First, when you purchase a share of stock you essentially become a part owner in the company. With this ownership comes special privileges, such as the right to vote on who sits on the board of directors and on matters that could ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. The Epidemiology Of Autoimmune Diseases Introduction Scientists who research the epidemiology of autoimmune diseases have experienced many complications in their work. In a field where one plus one rarely equals two, researchers have been work fervently to determine which cell types are responsible for, or at least involved in, autoimmune dysfunction. The main subject of study by Esposito et al. is the deleterious effects of chronic activation of proinflammatory cytokines. To this end, this team has sought to characterize and quantify the cells found in various loci in mice plagued with relapsing remitting experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (RR EAE), an induce murine model of human multiple sclerosis (MS). Another question of paramount importance is how to elucidate the mechanisms of these cells and their specific cell markers. For example, are certain cells present only in the target organ? Or did these cells migrate to that location? Or were there sequential stages of differentiation that occurred? Or is it a combination of the aforementioned postulates? The authors of this paper reference 33 previous studies; 26 of which focus on T cells. This underscores the significance of this project. Autoimmune diseases have affected the lives of people around the world, regardless of age, gender, or socioeconomic status. The Clinical Neuroimmunology Unit in Italy based some elements of their experiment on work performed by other laboratories. However, in addition to considering the results from other ... Our timid young man later evolves into Pemberton as we learn more about him, and the fat rich lady is referred to as Mrs. Moreen . James explains the name of the title as Pemberton worries frantically about the eleven year old boy who becomes The pupil . In doing this, he juxtaposes an outsider perspective of the characters with specific names to slowly make the poem personable as it progresses. As more information is disclosed, the more connected we become to the characters allowing us to understand their emotions and motives behind their actions. For example, we learn that Pemberton only accepts this job because he needs the money. If he didn t need the money it s implied that he most likely wouldn t take the job due to his lack of belief in his own skills. The tone of the poem fluxuates between formal and informal to explain what they all desire. James achieves this by using intelligent diction complemented with a simplistic undertone, by doing this he creates an opportunity to implement essential information to understand the ... Dale Ralph Davis, a theologian, professor, and pastor wrote a persuasive journal article involving the book of Revelation entitled Relationship Between the Seals, Trumpets, and Bowls in the Book of Revelation. In this article he lays out his thesis as Each of these series of judgments [the Seals, Trumpets, and Bowls] is primarily sequential to the preceding one(s), but that the end of each series is parallel to the end of the other series (i.e., that the sixth and seventh seals, the seventh trumpet, and the seventh bowl are parallel to each other). He deems this view at the end of his article as a Successive Final view. Davis is taking two views of Revelation, the sequential view, and the parallel view, and joining them together to creative the successive final view that he and other theologians hold to. He makes this point in his article by walking through the evidence for each piece of his view. He begins with the evidence for the sequential view, where he mentions five points that he believes backs up his view. First, as the book of Revelation progresses, the intensity of the judgments does as well. Which we can see through the judgment from the seals being ¼ of the people and the judgments of the trumpets being ⅓ of the people. Second, the differences in the sequence of the series. Organizations that pursue future improvement and development focus on mentoring by means of inviting internal and external professionals to mentor junior members. Mentoring is a rather complex subject and often takes serious preparation on the part of a mentor. Just being an experienced professional is not enough for becoming a good mentor for juniors. Mentoring is a responsible activity, which requires high levels of patience, professionalism, ethics, enthusiasm, tolerance and skills. Even though most of organizations mention highly developed training programs, in practice mentoring is still a new territory for most of them and often the professionals cannot properly explain what actually makes a good mentor and what efficient mentoring should include. The field of engineering is one of the professional spheres where young specialists are in high demand since there is a growing skills shortage in this field. To be able to function effectively in the future, engineering companies must take the issue of skills and professional scarcity seriously and improve mentoring methods in order to prepare highly qualified workers for the future. The speaker in Matthew Arnold s Dover Beach appears to shield from the current state of despair in the living world through the glorification of personal relationships. The speaker in George Herbert s Easter Wings appears to simply embrace the world s suffering as a catalyst for God s mercy, to bring strength and spiritual intimacy through Christ s crucifixion and resurrection. Both speakers of Matthew Arnold s Dover Beach and George Herbert s Easter Wings lament the current state of suffering in humanity. While the speakers may appear to have differing beliefs, they both have hidden fears that place their hope in the afterlife. Arnold s Dover Beach opens with a tranquil scene. A place where waves crash on the shoreline of the English Channel, and a couple gazes out a window at the moonlit water. The speaker uses the imagery and sound of pebbles in the surf to create a metaphor for the story of souls and the persistent, incremental decline of faith that his culture has suffered. The poem ends with the suggestion of promulgating love in a world of violence and fear and pain. This is actually a metaphor, for God is love. When the speaker promotes love between couples, this love is what will help prove their faith, not denounce it. In Dover Beach, the speaker appears to blame the retrograde of the Sea of Faith (line 21) for the world s ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

My parents, the resolute material providers that they are, taught me not to fend for myself, but rather to avoid confrontation altogether. Their eastern culture centric and old fashioned way of child rearing has had a profound effect on the way I lived my life. However, their penchant for negative reinforcement and their inability to show physical affection never impeded me on having a fulfilling and moderately successful life. When people are unemployed the economy loses their contribution in terms of goods and services. The increase in the percentage of unemployed indicates the extent of economic hardship faced by the nation, therefore it is important for policymakers to know the number of unemployed workers in an economy in order to make better decisions in regards to the growth of the economy. This changed in 1999 after Founder Steve Ells visited a Concentrated Animal Feeding Operation (CAFOs). He was not too impressed and changed his company s food sources to organic. Maintaining such high numbers in the use of organic meat and produce is next to impossible and as witnessed, the company is already incorporating non organic sources. • 44. The Importance of Roger Spottiswoode’s Screen Adaptation... The Importance of Roger Spottiswoode s Screen Adaptation of And The Band Played On [1] Hollywood is no longer just a name, it is a business, a living entity holding America s people in its grasp, and it is not about to let them go. Gradually taking on more responsibility and trying to build up its reputation over the years, Hollywood has progressively assumed the position of history teller for the American public. This role, whether or not an appropriate one for an industry such as Hollywood to tackle, has catapulted actors and actresses into high paying, high visibility positions. History has and will continue to be one of the main subjects that the movie industry has been fascinated with. It is an alive and very fragile ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The debate over cinematic history still remains, and it will continue to challenge Hollywood, constantly forcing the industry to make the best possible movies, producing historical epics on the big screen, making history a universal and personable subject. [3] In 1993, a small time director at HBO Productions thought it was about time that a movie was made discussing the broad, taboo topic of the AIDS epidemic. Roger Spottiswoode was the director, and he took author Randy Shilts controversial journal And The Band Played On: Politics, People and the AIDS Epidemic (1987) and turned it into a movie. Spottiswoode took the challenge facing Hollywood straight on and was bold enough to attempt a project that had been passed over and rejected for six years straight. From the beginning to end And The Band Played On was a fight. Spottiswoode fought for HBO to take the project on, and he fought with Hollywood to try to entice actors to participate in it. The fight continued after the release of the cable TV movie, with critics and the public simply not wanting to know or be informed of the truth. [4] With controversy surrounding the production of the movie, the fight seeped into the movie and its evidence in the story. The portrayal of the actors and the fight that each character undergoes is an illustration of the fight that AIDS forced our country to face in the early 1980 s. With Richard Gere s ... • 45. Critical Analysis of a Passage from Horace Walpole s... Horace Walpole s The Castle of Otranto, is acknowledged by many as the first gothic novel. It was the first of it s kind and many of the conventions used by Walpole, which put it in a literary genre of it s own, were continued by authors such as Ann Radcliffe and Matthew Lewis. Many of these defining characteristics can be seen within the very first few pages of the text and for the purposes of this essay, to identify some of these conventions used and the relevance of this text to modernity I shall focus this analysis on the passage between pages twenty four and twenty six from the Oxford World s Classics edition. The gothic novel emerged during the late eighteenth century and the Age of Enlightenment , which emphasised rationality ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In Otranto, Walpole challenges his societies views of modernity and transgresses social laws by introducing the theme of incest into his novel with Manfred preying of his deceased son s betrothed, Isabella. This brings into play three defining features which became prevalent within gothic novels of the late eighteenth century: women in distress; women being threatened by powerful males; and the major theme of fear and in this example, specifically female fear. Isabella, a young, virginal woman becomes half dead with fright when faced with potential rape and becoming a spoiled woman at the hands of the powerful and threatening Manfred. Such suggestions, by Walpole s age were seen as scandalous and caused moral outrage, a thread that was carried through the gothic genre. This new genre may have provided for many, an escape from the rigid world of enlightenment. It brought to them a world of imagination and allowed them to immerse themselves in a world which had been morally forbidden and they could do it from the privacy of their own homes, allowing their indulgence, and perhaps, immoral thoughts to go unnoticed, providing a way for the darkness and immoral thoughts to come alive outside of the novel. At the end of the novel however, society s moral ideals surface as Manfred retires to a convent after the realisation of his sins and order is restored. In this way, although Walpole is exposing his readers to these ideas, he would ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 46. Advanced Marginal Essay Advanced Marginality creates an empty space of competition and conflict, a danger filled battleground for the daily contest of survival and escape (Wacquant) These areas have been established through certain economic, political, and social factors that exploit the poor; illustrated in Matthew Desmond s book Evicted about spaces of advanced marginality in Milwaukee. Advanced marginality is formed through globalization, the displacement of jobs creates polarization between lower and upper class. Those financially stable leave the city, causing economic decline through loss of jobs, social program funding, and institutions. Which creates areas defined by race, unemployment and poverty (cite). The jobless poor in these areas are dependent on ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... These areas are prime moneymaker[s] for those who saw ripe opportunity in land scarcity, housing dilapidation and racial segregation (259). The strong demand for housing in these relatively cheap areas, allows them to charge inflated rent for inadequate housing, ensuring that the lower class they target can never afford to leave these areas. Legally, landlords were allowed to rent out units not up to code if they were honest about it (73) and continued this process because renters can easily be replaced. Heavy dependence on welfare makes them more likely to miss payments, leaving them constantly vulnerable to the threat of eviction. Landlords have resources at their disposal to constantly fill their properties with this lower class. For example, Belinda managed resident s welfare, relieving the possibility of missed payments and brought her clients to landlords, like Sherrena (cite). This relationship between tenant and landlord subsides when eviction becomes the most cost effective solution, because landlords take financially losses personally (cite), like when renters demand repairs, violate nuisance property ordinance or start looking for better housing all of which pose a cost or fine to the landlord. For example, one family bypassed Sherrena in order to get repairs. Another example is when Crystal called the police for help ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
