The Effectiveness of the International Criminal Court Essay
There is a close relationship between human rights and criminal law. The scope of my paper will
surround human rights and the International Criminal Court (ICC) in addition to human rights and
international crimes. International criminal justice in this context speaks to those interested in
prosecuting against the background of international human rights and humanitarian norms. The use of
criminal law has many positive effects and pursues many goals that are worth considering. For
example, deterrence, accountability and punishment are important principles that will be discussed in
the context of human rights. Is the International Criminal Court an effective method to promote and
protect human rights internationally? If so, why and how? ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
To support my argument, I will first discuss the evolution of international criminal justice and the ICC.
Then I will address my three subsidiary arguments. First, I will argue that the International Criminal
Court is effective because it increases accountability of human rights violators. Secondly, I will argue
that the existence and use of the court increases disapproval and deterrence which protects human
rights making the ICC effective. Third, I will argue that the International Criminal Court is effective
because it allows for a universal standard of acceptable and unacceptable behaviour as well as
transcends and empowers national jurisdictions. Finally, I will address the counter argument and
conclude.
The Evolution of International Criminal Justice and the ICC
The evolution of international criminal justice is important to consider. Two ad hoc tribunals, the
International Criminal Tribunal of Yugoslavia (ICTY) and the International Criminal Tribunal of
Rwanda (ICTR), have facilitated the adoption of the ICC. The ICC came into existence on July 1,
2002. The court operates on the principle of complementarity which means that the court does not
function unless a state in question is unable or unwilling to investigate and, if warranted, prosecute for
one of the covered crimes. Whereas the ICTY and the ICTR had primary jurisdiction and could
supersede state action, the ICC only has the aforementioned

Film Commentary on Hakka Stuffed Bitter Melon
The video 客家釀涼瓜 (Hakka Stuffed Bitter Melon) uses a traditional Hakka meal, Hakka Stuffed
Bitter Melon, as an example to elaborate some of the concepts about food covered in Anthropology.
The symbolism of food, inheritance of food among the community, correlation between food and
identity, and the gender stereotypes in food preparation are to be included in the video and would be
discussed in this commentary.
Firstly, traditional food or eating practices are related to the building of self identities. According Tam
(2002), Yum Cha (飲茶) carries the symbolism of the spirits of Hong Kong people, which are tolerant,
diverse, adaptable and looking towards changesi. Drinking herbal tea (凉茶), according to Cheng
(2002), is a practice symbolizing Hong Kong people s affirmations towards Chinaii. Food usually
carries special meanings in a community, the Hakka Stuffed Bitter Melon included. As what is
mentioned in this video, in Hakka community, the dish introduced carries a meaning of bearing
hardships since the taste of bitter melon is bitter that many people do not enjoy eating. Hakka people
treat having the dish as a practice to become a patient and strong people. The dish becomes a reminder
for the Hakka community in their daily life, which helps building their personal identities as one of the
Hakka community.

Dry Peas Lab Report
The two hypotheses tested during the experiment were the warmer the temperature, the more oxygen
will be consumed, and the germinated peas will consume more oxygen than the dry peas. Some
conditions that had to remain constant in this experiment were that each vial had to have the same
volume to let us know that the volume of the vial wouldn t affect the respiration rate. Had the volumes
been different, the respiration rate might have been affected. Another constant was the 7 minute
equilibrium period before completely submerging the vials in the water. This allowed the peas and the
other substances in the vials to begin respiration before being completely submerged in the water, but
also, they would have the same time to carry out their ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Boys Don T Cry Film Techniques
Boys Don t Cry, a movie released in 1999, tells a story of events that took place in Nebraska during
1993. The movie chronicles the story of Teena Brandon, a 20 year old female to male transgendered
person, who moves from Lincoln to Falls City, Nebraska, a small, rural town. He moves to Falls City
to escape the sexual/gender oppression and violence he experienced in Lincoln. From his arrival in
Lincoln, Brandon dresses and socializes as a male. He makes a group of friends, girls and men. She
falls in love and is sexually intimate with one of the girls. When two of the men Brandon has also
befriended discover (by force) that Brandon is genetically a woman, they rape and batter him.

The reality is that many places are just as bad including those semi rural areas where my Mother and
Father were born. However, people had fun there, including me on many occasions. When viewed
through a gendered lens, the people in Falls City Nebraska during 1993 as depicted in this movie were
no doubt unhappy. However, the unhappiness was not merely a function of where they lived, the lack
of opportunity and mobility, or even their unfortunate economic circumstances. People can live happy
lives while being burdened by all of the above. The message of the movie, as I see it, was that gender
stereotypes and prejudices can destroy many people whose mental, emotional and physical framework
doesn t fit the acceptable definitions of male and female . In the case of those who are forced to
repress their feelings and are somehow able to play by the gender rules , I find it difficult to believe
real happiness will be in the cards for them. And even those people who actually believe and/or accept
the rigid definitions of gender and appropriate behavior will live diminished lives that are less full,
less interesting and far less

Ptolemy s Argument Essay
The motion of Earth is a complicated idea to grasp. Its motion can t be seen with the naked eye or felt
in the way we feel motion from day to day. This, in conjunction with Aristotle s philosophical world
view built on shaky logic and a lack of technology meant that the debate over the motion of the Earth
lasted well into the 19th century. Galileo was able to chip away at some of the arguments using
empirical data. However, the philosophical worldview was able to be adjusted to account for his
discoveries. One of the most basic arguments for a stationary Earth was developed by Aristotle.
Humans can perceive motion through the wind on our faces, the scenery passing by, and other factors.
However, since the motion of the Earth is not observable in the same way other motion is, Aristotle
determined that the Earth was stationary. This among many of his other ideas were used to build a
world view that was in place for thousands of years. Ptolemy built on Aristotle s ideas with his
conclusions regarding the dynamics of an object thrown in the air or dropped from a tower. Ptolemy
notes that when an object is dropped from a height, it falls perpendicular to the ground (DeWitt P. 92).
By Ptolemy s logic, if the Earth was moving, the object would fall behind the initial position; since ...

This describes the theory that if the Earth is rotating about its axis or orbiting the Sun, the stars should
appear to move relative to the Earth s position in its orbit. Ptolemy acknowledges that stellar parallax
should be observed if the Earth is moving, but since it is not observed he concludes that the Earth is
not moving (DeWitt P. 94). This was a damning conclusion, because stellar parallax was not observed
until 1838 (DeWitt P. 96). The crux in Ptolemy s conclusion is that he believes the stars are much
closer than they are which should have allowed him to observe the

Values Of The Game, By Bill Bradley
Schema To reiterate, Bill Bradley s Virtues of leadership, resilience, and passion are what account
most for his legacy as a citizen. According to Bill Bradley, author of Values of the Game he discusses
leadership and what it means to him. Leadership means getting people to think, believe, see, and do
what they might not have to do without anyone being present while they are doing that particular
thing. What he means by this is being able to see yourself set goal and being able to accomplish it on
their own behalf; being cautious of their surroundings led by fears and anxiety created by those who
are leading them to where they need to be, in order for you to do that you must overcome that anxiety
and your fears.(103) On the other hand, according to the Bulls Phil Jackson, leadership for coaches

Mexican Immigration Essay
Mexican immigration in the early 1900 s was a huge issue that impacted the United
States in areas such as urban population, employment and many other ways. The mass number of
Mexican immigrant s that migrated to the United States from Mexico was at nearly half million
in between the years of 1920 and 1929. Mexicans left their native land and moved to the United
States not only to achieve financial prosperity, but to get out of the chaotic environment that
Mexico was in at the time due to the Mexican revolution which began in 1910. Many Mexicans

part this was the objective goal of the Protestant denominations, the Catholic Church and the

The year 1910 marked the start of the Mexican Revolution which pushed many Mexican
citizens north of the border into the United States. Not only were they pushed to America by the
Mexican Revolution but they were also lured here by the numerous employment opportunities
such as farming, railroad work, and mining that s could be found in Midwest states
such as Chicago, Colorado and Iowa. In a report that Reverend Robert N. Mclean did on Colorado
Mexicans in 1924, he stated evidence that showed at the time 35 percent of the
population in Las Animas County, Colorado was Mexican which amounts to 17,000 or 18,000
people. The majority of these Mexicans worked in the mining camps.
Another example of this is found in a report that was done in 1928 by Anita Edgar Jones
in which she surveyed Mexican Life in Chicago. She stated that The Mexicans in Chicago
live for the most part either in railroad camps or in well defined colonies.... The most important
colonies are those which may be described as the Hull House colony, the University of Chicago

My Discourse Community Analysis
Music has always been a thing that has interested me. The idea of people putting their talents together
to create something has always amazed me. Being in a discourse community like music is always
going to be difficult starting out. Working with others was never my strong suit, and all of the
preparation and studying stressed me out. It sucks to try very hard and have it all result in nothing. It is
the idea of perfection that everyone strives for. In my case, it is a group effort of the people involved
in my discourse community to achieve our shared goal. We strive to please ourselves and others

Since there is a concert we have to perform in a few months, it is especially important to work
together. In the lab portion of the class, the people who chose to do percussions meet up twice a week
and practice the piece we ve been working on. In order to communicate with each other, we all meet
up and practice together. We occasionally get emails from the professor telling us important dates and
lessons. We use those mechanisms of communication in order to slowly improve as a group. Between
our meetings and the emails, I think that the emails are the genre of the discourse community. While
meeting as a group is important, it can be difficult and confusing based on the person. The emails that
the professor sends are a genre because it is understood by everyone. They are useful because of the
help they give students in the community, and it doesn t require a specific lexicon to know what is
being said. There aren t many rules for the class, but it there are hidden ones. They are mainly
common sense things like participate with the class, show up, and be on time. In the lab, it is
important to have the necessary vocabulary to understand the class. Language is a key component to
pass the lecture course. If you don t know the difference between adagio and allegro, it is difficult to
keep up with the class. Knowledge about music terms is completely necessary because it is all of the
things we re graded on. We were all required to know terms like dynamics, rhythm, and what is on a
staff. The goal in the lecture is to understand key concepts of music, in order to improve ourselves
when we play in the lab section of the class. In the community regardless of if we re experienced or
new to music, we all learn everything through practice and watching the professor perform. In the
lecture portion of the class, the main goal is to have knowledge about the terms in music. The class is

On the evening of May 22nd, 2017 at 10:30 pm Ariana Grande was an American singer who had just

would no longer be heard, and instead the cries of innocent young people prior to the sound of an

Slavery In The Movie Roots
Slavery
In our class we watched this very sad and inspirational movie called Roots. The movie is based on the
very well liked book by Alex Hailey. The mini series was made in 1977 and tells a story about his
african american family throughout the 1750 to the 1870. It shows how they want from their oldest
back relative named Kunta Kinte and went through the generations to when they finally escaped to
freedom. At first looking at slavery i thought that it wasn t that bad and you could get out of being a
slave pretty easily but, after watching this show i now know that slavery is one of the cruelest things
that has ever happened on the earth. Slavery is very brutal because some of the African American
women were raped by their owners, Also they were forced to change there name to be more white
like, and lastly most slaves would never know what it was like to be free.
First off, slavery is truly inhumane because slave owners often raped their slaves. Not only is this
disgusting but it s evil. All slaves were forced to comply or else they would be punished. Most of the
female slaves were raped on a regular basis. Sometimes the master was over 50 and was messing with

My Memories
One of my earliest memories, as a young child growing up in the 1960s and 1970s, was the visits to
my Nan s home in south Ealing, west London.
My family had moved from London to live in the seaside town of Weston super Mare in the mid
1960s. We had travelled to Weston by steam train but on returning to London for a visit, by the end of
the 1960s, the coal eating steam trains were out and the odorous smell of diesel trains were in.
The same steam engine carriages were still in use and were made up of individual compartments; my
family of nine took up an entire compartment.
Nan s food larder was always well stocked for our visits; filled with goodies like Spam, corned beef,
Piccalilli etc. At Nan s house, unlike at home, I got the opportunity of sampling such delicacies like
Spamish omelette and Spam fritters. Sounds exotic? Yes, to me they were. I love Piccalilli; it s the
kind of stuff that never entered my home back in the 1960s, too weird, too foreign. Whenever I see
Piccalilli it always reminds me of Nan.
My large family would have been pretty boisterous and quite a handful for a woman, who normally
lived on her own, to put up with; an invasion of bodies filling every room of her Victorian terraced
house.
I loved my Nan s cooking; it was tasty and wholesome, definitely much more delicious than the
offerings at home. Besides the great British favourites, like Spam and corned beef, I think the food I
experienced in London was exotic because it was diverse and

Background Universal Health Care System
One of the most long standing health care systems was originated in Germany in 1889 by Otto von
Bismarck s social legislation. Its included bills were the Health Insurance Bill 1883, Old Age and
Disability Insurance Bill of 1889, and Accident Insurance Bill of 1883. The National Insurance Act of
1911 in Britain covered most people employed. It also financed dependents if families had contributed
for at least five years. This coverage lasted whether families worked or not. This Act was amended in
1948 with the National Health Service revised the act to secure only legal residents to benefit from
this plan. Many universal health care systems originated after the 2nd world war. During this period,

Health care systems in Germany faced problems including a growing population, visitation of patients

and poor disparity, over testing patients, and preventable deaths of adults and infants.
German government established its system to distribute fairness to all by engulfing itself in the

It has been demonstrated that his method is largely ineffective. The pricing and distribution of services

One group of Maya led by Marcos Canul attacked a mahogany camp on the Bravo River in 1866. A

British troops marched into areas in which the Maya had settled and destroyed villages in an attempt

Cell free fetal DNA testing is a relatively new technique used to screen for genetic disorders in a
general obstetrical population. This method is proving to be the most sensitive among all existing
standard screening methods in detecting Down syndrome, which is the most prevalent genetic disorder

pregnancy, and it is safe to the mother and fetus. Furthermore, when used as a primary screening

(less than four), a few number of instructions (around 150) and a few addressing modes (less than

complexity increases for the RISC processors to execute due to its character cycle per instruction. The
performance of the RISC processors depends mostly on the compiler or the programmer as the
knowledge of the compiler plays a major role while converting the CISC code to a RISC code; hence,
the quality of the generated code depends on the

Peter Pan Quotes
J.M. Barrie s novel Peter Pan tells the story of Peter Pan, the boy who would not grow up, and his
adventures in Neverland with Wendy, Michael and John Darling. Barrie s portrayal of Peter Pan
suggests several ideas about childhood. According to Barrie, children have flaws and their creative
imaginations recompense for their imperfection, another idea that is mostly highlighted in the
beginning and end of the book, is that no matter how much you don t want to, growing up is
inevitable. Throughout the book you get the sense that children are lighthearted and nonsensical. For
example, is when Wendy wakes up to Peter s sobs because he couldn t stick his shadow back on, How
awful! she said, but could not help smiling when she saw that he had been trying ... Show more

Another example is when Peter, Wendy and the Lost Boys are at the Mermaids Lagoon and the Pirates
are trying to guess who Peter is when he is imitating Hook s voice, but of course in his pride he was
carrying the game too far [...] (78) This quote demonstrates that children can be cocky and take games
too far and without thinking of the consequences. Children can be imprudent, rash, and carefree, as in
trying to stick a shadow on with soap. J.M. Barrie highlights the fact that children have strong,
fantastic imaginations. As the narrator is describing the house under the ground, where Peter, the Lost
Boys, and the Darling children live in Neverland, he explains what their diet is, You never knew
whether there would be a real meal or just a make believe, it all depended upon Peter s whim: he could

Ethical Dilemmas Of The Workplace
1. Discuss an ethical dilemma that you have had to face in the workplace. Ethical dilemmas often
occur when a manager or an employee is faced with two or more conflicting choices. Give as many
facts and details as possible in describing your dilemma.
The most difficult ethical dilemma I have dealt with was a summer job I had this past summer, while I
was working for a bakery in my hometown. This past particular summer really tested what I believe is
right and wrong and how to speak up. One of my good friends mother owns a bakery and cafe shop in
our hometown. It is a very respectable and well known place, because of how the business got started.
Linda, my good friends mother, was always baking something delicious and would always have ...

Some days Linda, the owner, would leave and go on errands for the bakery or would get migraines
and go home for the day. Nothing would change when she left other than the fact of locking up. There
was only one manager who has worked in the bakery since the day it opened, Taylor. Taylor was a
kind hearted soul who would help anyone in need. She would always be willing to stay late or come in
early with a smile on her face. I looked up to this method and copied this in my work with the bakery.
One day a couple came in telling Linda that they forgot to order a cake for their wedding that was two
days away. Linda completely understood the situation and of course said yes. Once she told us I was
the first one that said I would stay late and help make the wedding cake. Linda and Taylor were both
happy because they both knew they needed the help. Later that day when we started baking the cake
Linda got a migraine and had to leave and go home, so Taylor and I continued on working on the cake.
It was getting kind of late so we found a stopping point. After cleaning up and closing down for the
night I hung my apron and said I would see her in the morning. Once I got to my truck I released I
forgot my phone inside and luckily Taylor did not lock the door yet. I went back inside to look for
where I left it. I could not find it in the back where we were baking nor could I find Taylor, which I
thought was a little odd. I headed to the front to see if

Insider Trading Is Ugly, Unfair And Un American
Tennessean (Op ed): Insider trading is ugly, unfair and un American
Phoebe Venable, For The Tennessean 11:04 p.m. CST November 20, 2015
One might say that the spirit of America is fair play. That s not to say that all s fair in America; there s
much, of course, that s not fair. What I mean is that as a nation we re guided by an idea formally
outlined in our noble Constitution and practiced down to our playgrounds that everyone has an equal
shot. Regardless of color, creed or capital, you can make it. You can succeed. You can be happy. You
can make a difference. You can even be president. The rules aren t written to ensure that this happens.

If they do, it s fraud. That s because a corporate insider is legally obligated to put shareholder interests
before his or her own. This obligation or duty to the company can be imputed a legal term for assigned
to another when an insider gives that person a tip based on material nonpublic information that s likely
to have an effect on the company s stock price.
What is material nonpublic information? Material information is anything that would be relevant to an
investor making a decision to buy or sell stock. Nonpublic information is anything that hasn t been
disclosed to the general marketplace. Put them together and what you ve got is unfair play. The blatant
disregard of the rule and other players is cheating.
Senator faces allegations
Some of you may have read the recent Wall Street Journal story regarding Sen. Bob Corker s

Whales Evolution
Did you even know whales ever lived on land? The whales are the biggest animals. They are larger
than the largest dinosaurs. They live in the ocean like other sea creatures, but they almost look like the
land living animals more than the fishes. Furthermore, some scientists believed that around fifty
millions of years ago, the whales probably lived upon the land. There are two significant exhibits from
the two different periods why the scientists astonish about whale s living is familiar to land living
mammals, which are whale s anatomy in this current period and whale s fossil remains of the past.
Firstly, the anatomy of the whales nowadays is one of the significant testimonies to attest that the
whales lived on a land for a very long time ago. According to whale s anatomy, the whales have
placentas for giving birth and have nipples for feeding milk to their young unlike fish that lay eggs for
giving birth. They often nurse their children for two years. After that, their babies begin to eat solid

Analysis Of All Quiet On The Western Front By Erich Remarque
Erich Remarque s All Quiet on the Western Front tells the story of a group of German soldiers and
their experience as soldiers during World War I. Paul Baumer, the main character, and his friends,
Stanislaus Katczinsky, Albert Kropp, and Mueller, whiteness extreme brutality and bloodshed unfold
around them, as the war begins to take its toll on each character one by one, fighting in the trenches of
WWI. Remarque tells the audience of the intensity of the war, as well as the horrors that the characters
experience fighting in the trenches. All Quiet on the Western Front tells the story of WW1 as it really
was. WWI would forever transform the way wars would be fought, introducing new technology, such
as aircraft, tanks, machine guns, and gas that would cause much more casualties than wars before it.
WWI would forever dash the ideas of warfare romanticism by highlighting the bloodshed and horrid
conditions that the soldiers would experience. As the author of this book, Erich Remarque, was
himself a soldier during WWI, he provides the audience with a credible idea of how this war would be
experienced through the eyes of an infantryman, fighting and living in horrid conditions within the
trenches of a WWI battlefield. Remarque takes an anti war stance, as he critiques the past ideas of
nationalism, patriotism, and the romanticism surrounding the ideas of warfare. During the early 20th
century, many different nations expressed the ideas of nationalism, fighting for the defense

Repeat Entrepreneurs Case Study Essay
Introduction This paper will examine whether repeat entrepreneurs search for opportunities differently
than entrepreneurs who found only one company. Before examining the case for or against this theory,
a brief discussion what makes up an entrepreneur opens this paper. From there it moves into a brief
discussion of Howard Stevenson and his importance within the field of study of entrepreneurism.
Then the focus turns to a case for or against whether repeat entrepreneurs search for opportunities
differently than entrepreneurs who found only one company. To emphasize the findings discussed, a
brief case study of a successful entrepreneur hopes to reinforce the concepts discussed. The paper will

A Case Against
Repeat entrepreneurs know they have the ability to identify an opportunity and turn that opportunity
into a business. In most cases, they have already done it at least once. Unfortunately, this does not
mean that the first business was a success or that they will be able to repeat the success the first
business may have had. In fact, if the first business was a failure, there are indications that the second
business may fail as well. Recent research shows that instead of learning from mistakes, entrepreneurs
are just as apt to be overoptimistic after failure as before. Their overoptimism remains undimmed by
failure (Ucbasaran, Westhead Wright, 2011). This overoptimism can cause an entrepreneur to take on
risky opportunities, fail to properly plan for the unforeseen or waste financial resources instead of
looking for and finding the right opportunity.
Successful entrepreneurs looking to become repeat entrepreneurs may incorrectly over focus on
recreating their success that ideas for future opportunities are not as strong as the previous ones.
Where the first opportunity an entrepreneur pursued may have grown from an organic problem solving
process, repeat entrepreneurs may look to duplicate that success instead of taking the time to grow into
another opportunity as organically as the first. The greatest, and more crucial, challenge

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder ( Ptsd ) And Its Effect On...
This essay discusses Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and its effect on combat soldiers
involved in the Afghanistan and Iraq Wars. The goal of this paper is to inform others about what the
soldiers deal with during and after combat and the different treatments available for them to cope with
and hopefully overcome this disorder. PTSD is an anxiety disorder that develops when someone is
witness to or experiences a traumatic event. PTSD has specific symptoms resulting from traumatic life
threatening experiences. Symptoms resulting from the event must be present in a certain way over a
period of time and for certain duration. A person who witnesses two or more traumatic events in a
short amount of time can cause the brain to release the hormone glucocorticoid which helps control
the response to stress. When this hormone is low or depleted and a second traumatic event takes place
before the hormone is replenished in the brain, the stress becomes even more intensified thus
increasing the person s chances of developing PTSD. Most people who develop PTSD get better but 1
out of 3 people may continue to have some symptoms over their lifetime. The main symptom of PTSD
is reliving the traumatic experience through flashbacks and nightmares. Other symptoms include
soldiers avoiding situations, people or conversations that would remind them of the trauma. They tend
to avoid memories by becoming numb, distant, or stop showing love towards others. Activities, such
as sports, that

  • 2. The Effectiveness of the International Criminal Court Essay There is a close relationship between human rights and criminal law. The scope of my paper will surround human rights and the International Criminal Court (ICC) in addition to human rights and international crimes. International criminal justice in this context speaks to those interested in prosecuting against the background of international human rights and humanitarian norms. The use of criminal law has many positive effects and pursues many goals that are worth considering. For example, deterrence, accountability and punishment are important principles that will be discussed in the context of human rights. Is the International Criminal Court an effective method to promote and protect human rights internationally? If so, why and how? ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... To support my argument, I will first discuss the evolution of international criminal justice and the ICC. Then I will address my three subsidiary arguments. First, I will argue that the International Criminal Court is effective because it increases accountability of human rights violators. Secondly, I will argue that the existence and use of the court increases disapproval and deterrence which protects human rights making the ICC effective. Third, I will argue that the International Criminal Court is effective because it allows for a universal standard of acceptable and unacceptable behaviour as well as transcends and empowers national jurisdictions. Finally, I will address the counter argument and conclude. The Evolution of International Criminal Justice and the ICC The evolution of international criminal justice is important to consider. Two ad hoc tribunals, the International Criminal Tribunal of Yugoslavia (ICTY) and the International Criminal Tribunal of Rwanda (ICTR), have facilitated the adoption of the ICC. The ICC came into existence on July 1, 2002. The court operates on the principle of complementarity which means that the court does not function unless a state in question is unable or unwilling to investigate and, if warranted, prosecute for one of the covered crimes. Whereas the ICTY and the ICTR had primary jurisdiction and could supersede state action, the ICC only has the aforementioned ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Film Commentary on Hakka Stuffed Bitter Melon The video 客家釀涼瓜 (Hakka Stuffed Bitter Melon) uses a traditional Hakka meal, Hakka Stuffed Bitter Melon, as an example to elaborate some of the concepts about food covered in Anthropology. The symbolism of food, inheritance of food among the community, correlation between food and identity, and the gender stereotypes in food preparation are to be included in the video and would be discussed in this commentary. Firstly, traditional food or eating practices are related to the building of self identities. According Tam (2002), Yum Cha (飲茶) carries the symbolism of the spirits of Hong Kong people, which are tolerant, diverse, adaptable and looking towards changesi. Drinking herbal tea (凉茶), according to Cheng (2002), is a practice symbolizing Hong Kong people s affirmations towards Chinaii. Food usually carries special meanings in a community, the Hakka Stuffed Bitter Melon included. As what is mentioned in this video, in Hakka community, the dish introduced carries a meaning of bearing hardships since the taste of bitter melon is bitter that many people do not enjoy eating. Hakka people treat having the dish as a practice to become a patient and strong people. The dish becomes a reminder for the Hakka community in their daily life, which helps building their personal identities as one of the Hakka community. Dry Peas Lab Report The two hypotheses tested during the experiment were the warmer the temperature, the more oxygen will be consumed, and the germinated peas will consume more oxygen than the dry peas. Some conditions that had to remain constant in this experiment were that each vial had to have the same volume to let us know that the volume of the vial wouldn t affect the respiration rate. Had the volumes been different, the respiration rate might have been affected. Another constant was the 7 minute equilibrium period before completely submerging the vials in the water. • 5. Boys Don T Cry Film Techniques Boys Don t Cry, a movie released in 1999, tells a story of events that took place in Nebraska during 1993. The movie chronicles the story of Teena Brandon, a 20 year old female to male transgendered person, who moves from Lincoln to Falls City, Nebraska, a small, rural town. He moves to Falls City to escape the sexual/gender oppression and violence he experienced in Lincoln. From his arrival in Lincoln, Brandon dresses and socializes as a male. He makes a group of friends, girls and men. She falls in love and is sexually intimate with one of the girls. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The reality is that many places are just as bad including those semi rural areas where my Mother and Father were born. However, people had fun there, including me on many occasions. When viewed through a gendered lens, the people in Falls City Nebraska during 1993 as depicted in this movie were no doubt unhappy. However, the unhappiness was not merely a function of where they lived, the lack of opportunity and mobility, or even their unfortunate economic circumstances. People can live happy lives while being burdened by all of the above. The message of the movie, as I see it, was that gender stereotypes and prejudices can destroy many people whose mental, emotional and physical framework doesn t fit the acceptable definitions of male and female . In the case of those who are forced to repress their feelings and are somehow able to play by the gender rules , I find it difficult to believe real happiness will be in the cards for them. And even those people who actually believe and/or accept the rigid definitions of gender and appropriate behavior will live diminished lives that are less full, less interesting and far less ... • 6. Ptolemy s Argument Essay The motion of Earth is a complicated idea to grasp. Its motion can t be seen with the naked eye or felt in the way we feel motion from day to day. This, in conjunction with Aristotle s philosophical world view built on shaky logic and a lack of technology meant that the debate over the motion of the Earth lasted well into the 19th century. Galileo was able to chip away at some of the arguments using empirical data. However, the philosophical worldview was able to be adjusted to account for his discoveries. One of the most basic arguments for a stationary Earth was developed by Aristotle. Humans can perceive motion through the wind on our faces, the scenery passing by, and other factors. However, since the motion of the Earth is not observable in the same way other motion is, Aristotle determined that the Earth was stationary. This among many of his other ideas were used to build a world view that was in place for thousands of years. Ptolemy built on Aristotle s ideas with his conclusions regarding the dynamics of an object thrown in the air or dropped from a tower. Ptolemy notes that when an object is dropped from a height, it falls perpendicular to the ground (DeWitt P. 92). By Ptolemy s logic, if the Earth was moving, the object would fall behind the initial position; since ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This describes the theory that if the Earth is rotating about its axis or orbiting the Sun, the stars should appear to move relative to the Earth s position in its orbit. Ptolemy acknowledges that stellar parallax should be observed if the Earth is moving, but since it is not observed he concludes that the Earth is not moving (DeWitt P. 94). This was a damning conclusion, because stellar parallax was not observed until 1838 (DeWitt P. 96). We use those mechanisms of communication in order to slowly improve as a group. Between our meetings and the emails, I think that the emails are the genre of the discourse community. While meeting as a group is important, it can be difficult and confusing based on the person. The emails that the professor sends are a genre because it is understood by everyone. They are useful because of the help they give students in the community, and it doesn t require a specific lexicon to know what is being said. There aren t many rules for the class, but it there are hidden ones. They are mainly common sense things like participate with the class, show up, and be on time. Three minutes later that same night singing would no longer be heard, and instead the cries of innocent young people prior to the sound of an explosion released by Salman Abedi. Ariana Grande was now no longer just a singer, but a victim, and even to some: the cause. More specifically she was an American citizen caught in an international crisis. It shows how they want from their oldest back relative named Kunta Kinte and went through the generations to when they finally escaped to freedom. At first looking at slavery i thought that it wasn t that bad and you could get out of being a slave pretty easily but, after watching this show i now know that slavery is one of the cruelest things that has ever happened on the earth. Slavery is very brutal because some of the African American women were raped by their owners, Also they were forced to change there name to be more white like, and lastly most slaves would never know what it was like to be free. First off, slavery is truly inhumane because slave owners often raped their slaves. Not only is this disgusting but it s evil. All slaves were forced to comply or else they would be punished. • 16. My Memories One of my earliest memories, as a young child growing up in the 1960s and 1970s, was the visits to my Nan s home in south Ealing, west London. My family had moved from London to live in the seaside town of Weston super Mare in the mid 1960s. We had travelled to Weston by steam train but on returning to London for a visit, by the end of the 1960s, the coal eating steam trains were out and the odorous smell of diesel trains were in. The same steam engine carriages were still in use and were made up of individual compartments; my family of nine took up an entire compartment. Nan s food larder was always well stocked for our visits; filled with goodies like Spam, corned beef, Piccalilli etc. At Nan s house, unlike at home, I got the opportunity of sampling such delicacies like Spamish omelette and Spam fritters. Sounds exotic? Yes, to me they were. I love Piccalilli; it s the kind of stuff that never entered my home back in the 1960s, too weird, too foreign. Whenever I see Piccalilli it always reminds me of Nan. My large family would have been pretty boisterous and quite a handful for a woman, who normally lived on her own, to put up with; an invasion of bodies filling every room of her Victorian terraced house. I loved my Nan s cooking; it was tasty and wholesome, definitely much more delicious than the offerings at home. In most cases, they have already done it at least once. Unfortunately, this does not mean that the first business was a success or that they will be able to repeat the success the first business may have had. In fact, if the first business was a failure, there are indications that the second business may fail as well. Recent research shows that instead of learning from mistakes, entrepreneurs are just as apt to be overoptimistic after failure as before. Their overoptimism remains undimmed by failure (Ucbasaran, Westhead Wright, 2011). This overoptimism can cause an entrepreneur to take on risky opportunities, fail to properly plan for the unforeseen or waste financial resources instead of looking for and finding the right opportunity. PTSD is an anxiety disorder that develops when someone is witness to or experiences a traumatic event. PTSD has specific symptoms resulting from traumatic life threatening experiences. Symptoms resulting from the event must be present in a certain way over a period of time and for certain duration. A person who witnesses two or more traumatic events in a short amount of time can cause the brain to release the hormone glucocorticoid which helps control the response to stress. When this hormone is low or depleted and a second traumatic event takes place before the hormone is replenished in the brain, the stress becomes even more intensified thus increasing the person s chances of developing PTSD. Most people who develop PTSD get better but 1 out of 3 people may continue to have some symptoms over their lifetime.
