It is the general state of individual resulting from the continues
activity.
It affects the efficiency of mind and the general feeling of
worker.
Harell named it ‘negative appetite for work’.
The layman used the term ‘tiredness’ for fatigue.
Three main characteristics of fatigue:
•It affects the efficiency of the workers and thus reduces the
quality of work.
•Workers feel dissatisfied with the continuance of the work
and desires rests or stoppage of work.
•It may involve change in the physical condition of man such
as high or low blood pressure.

3. □ Symptoms of Fatigue/ Types of Fatigue
Physical FatiguePhysical Fatigue: A person may feel tired in
physically, feeling drowsy, feel heavy and headache,
feel pain in eyes, hands, legs and even back.
He/she feels lazy to keep standing rather wants to lie
down on a bed; feel thirsty, get slow down at
work, sweat too much, heartbeat goes up etc.
Psychological FatiguePsychological Fatigue: A person does not want to
think; rather they lose motivation, attention,
patience etc. enthusiasm decreases, active work and
carefulness decline a lot. For this reason productivity
of a person hampers.

The fatigue affects the efficiency and productivity of
worker and the industry.
Physical and psychological health of the worker is
adversely affected.
It affects the productivity and efficiency of the
workers, which ultimately affects the production, the
costs and the quality of the production.
Other effects such as wastage of material, increase
in the possibilities of accidents etc.

6. Industrial fatigue may be the outcome of one or more of
the allowing factors:
Unreasonably long hours of work without proper intervals.
Faulty machine design due to which the workers may have
to make inconvenient and painful movement.
Inconvenient and awkward (clumsy) posture on the work
bench, i.e. working in a standing or banding position
continuously for a long time or sitting cross-legged.
Personal factors such as ill-health of worker, family life
and
his interest in the job.
Uncongenial environment such as inadequate, lighting,
heating, noise, speed etc.
Monotony or an unpleasant job.

7. □ Measures to Avoid Fatigue
Work environments should be improved, i.e., to provide
for better lighting etc. and to arrange for better materials
and machines etc.
Working hours should be reduced.
Hawthorne Researches show that the provisions of
adequate rest pauses reduce fatigue considerably.
Improvement in machines and methods reduces fatigue.
Unnecessary movements on machines may be reduced
thereby.
