This document compares and contrasts quantitative and qualitative research. Quantitative research aims to precisely measure and test hypotheses using experimental, quasi-experimental or non-experimental designs with large sample sizes. The variables are clearly defined beforehand. Qualitative research seeks an in-depth understanding of human behavior through small sample sizes using phenomenology, case studies or other designs where the problem and variables may be reformulated during the study. It collects rich narrative data for developing theories rather than generalizing findings. The researcher is immersed subjectively rather than separated objectively from the subject matter.
