ORIENTATION
•The orientation begins when patient expresses a felt
need
•This need provides the impetus for a meeting between
a nurse & patient.
•The nurse & the patient meet as strangers & strive to
become comfortable with each other collaboratively
defining the problem
•Collaborative clarifying & defining the problem allows
the patient to direct energy from anxiety of unmet needs
toward constructive activities
•The patient & the nurse work together to understand
their reactions to each other mindful of potential
