This document discusses how the creator targeted their media product, an indie/punk rock magazine, towards a 16-25 year old, middle/working class audience in Britain of any gender. They attracted this audience through editing images to be more appealing, using language and layouts that would seem relatable, including clothing and locations in photos that reflected the audience's lifestyle, and allowing social media engagement. Feedback from focus groups of the target audience helped shape the magazine. The goal was to address the audience's needs through informative, entertaining, and identity-affirming content.
1. Evaluation Question 4 & 5
Who would be the audience for your media product? & How did you attract/address your
audience?
2. Target Audience
I chose to make my production set as an indie/punk rock magazine aimed at
middle/working class, aged between 16-25, British, and no gender bias -
therefore satisfies both male and female. I always planned to have an equal
number of male to female shots in my production to further emphasis the fact my
magazine could appeal to both male and female readers.
Throughout the production of my construction I have conferred with my target
audience a number of times through my focus group and they have give me
useful feedback on what that particular audience would want from a music
magazine.
3. Attracting my target audience - Editing
One thing I did to appeal to the audience was making the editing more appealing for the reader. I did this
by cropping images so that the facial features were more dominant and therefore the audience could
reflect the models emotion and build a connection (direct mode of address uses & grat), as well as
drawing their attention.
Furthermore, editing the contrast, brightness and tones of my images gives the images a more life like
feel making the images stand out more, I also edited them so they suited the house style which further
attracts the audience as it looks pleasing to the eye.
For my double page spread I edited the colours to make the image look more funky and punk which was
the style and genre I was going for with my magazine, this also draws the attention to the model so the
audience can compare themselves and see the similarities in how they act and how they are/can be
perceived.
4. Attracting my target audience - Language
I chose to use some particular language on the double page spread to appeal to my audience, and allow
the correct form of register to come through. This meant I had to use an uncaring, unfinished feel
sometimes to make the text relatable to the audience. I also used explicit text, to appeal to my audience.
On the other pages, I decided it was less necessary to do so, instead opting for words to draw the
audience in such as ‘Exclusive’ or ‘Win’ and even ‘Music Revolution’ which would create an enigma and
uncertainty for the reader, meaning they would want to continue reading and fulfill any needs -
particularly informative ones here (uses and grats)
5. Attracting my target audience - Layout
For the contents page, I used clear columns and rows in order to make the text accessible for the reader
and allow them to find the individual needs they wanted to fulfill. This could be anything from cognitive
needs - lists of names included, to informative needs (uses and grats).
For the double page spread, I used an unconventional layout which would appeal to my audience as
they can relate to being different as they themselves dont follows hegemonic norms. They can therefore
relate to this layout, and appreciate the willingness to rebel against the common conventions.
Furthermore, a technique I used to attract my target audience is by allowing the reader to engage with
the magazine for example using social media links to connect with that my target age group which allows
them to engage with the magazine in between issues.
6. Attracting my target audience - mise en scene
The first way in which I appealed to my target audience was to use clothing similar to what I would
perceive them to wear. This would instantly make the genre and type of magazine clear to the
audience and allows a relationship to form as they can relate to the model.
To add to this, the background used in some of the images reflects the area of where my audience
could be on a day to day basis, or could be somewhere where they want to be. This would appeal
to them as it is likely to act as a personal integrative needs (uses and grats) but then could also
be seen as personal identity assurance.
7. Attracting my target audience - images
I feel I appealed to my audience through images by firstly using direct mode of address. This
would create a relationship with the audience (uses and grats) making them more drawn in to the
magazine. This was clear on both from cover and contents and the double page spread, as I feel
the body language and the positioning was more important for the reader to access.
Multiple image on my contents would fulfill a wide range of cognitive needs as well as inform the
reader what to expect inside (uses and grats) which would’ve appeal to them in recognition of the
names.
