HOW DOES YOUR MEDIA
PRODUCT REPRESENT
PARTICULAR SOCIAL
GROUPS?
Question 2
The social groups that I have
represented in my magazine
are white British
teenagers/young adults . Even
though my target audience is
very broad I decided to use
these as this demographic is
the largest and the main focal
point and so having them relate
to the models is key. In my
magazine both male and
female models were used with
a slight imbalance in favour to
the male gender. Even though
I’m aiming my magazine at
both genders this is typical for
country music and so I kept to
the codes and conventions
ShotTypes
In the majority of my images in my magazine were eye-line shots. This
meant that direct mode of address was used between the model and
the audience to create a personal relationship (uses and
gratifications). Since it is a country magazine I used neutral
expressions along with one positive to counter the hegemonic
stereotype of young adults.
On my contents page and my double page spread I used two long
shots. The long shot on my double page spread shows my models on
the right looking away from the camera with the rest of the image
being the background of the left hand side. The long shot in my
contents page isn’t a key component of the content and so the ‘action
shot’ isn’t influencing the reader as much.
Mise en Scene
In the main picture for the contents page the two models are wearing casual clothes and
relatively plain clothes that isn’t representing a certain age group since my target audience is
so broad. The use of the two younger model appeals to more of a younger audience and the
decision to have two models of differing genders makes it appeal to both. The expressions on
their faces and the Mise en scene could be pluralistic of teenage/young
adult stereotypes as they are represented as mature adults and are
positive in the eyes of the target audience.
For the double-page spread the two models here are looking away
from the camera into the distant creating a sense intrigue. They are
wearing plain clothing which appeals to most of the target audience
and is fashionable to the main target audience and so enables them
to relate to the models.
Once again, much like the picture in the contents page the models are
wearing clothes that are casual (plain tee) which represents a variety of
age groups.Originally it was two separate images but the decision to
edit them into one by showing both of them as one face. By doing this it creates equality
with both genders and not only attracts interest but shows the gender neutral approach I’m
trying to achieve
Layout
The Layout is more representative of
teenagers and younger adults as there are lots
of images and not text heavy unlike
magazines that are text heavy that mainly
target older audiences. It is ordered
structurally so can it is very hard to miss
aspects and information. By giving it a
structure I have eliminated crowding of
images (Like Q magazine) meaning that it is
appealing to the readers eye.The text is
informative and sharp so it keeps the readers
attention the amount of the content doesn’t
lose the professionalism.
Ideology
In my production I prioritised the reception theory with the ability to relate between the audience and
similar aged artists and models within the magazine. By doing this it allows the reader to create personal
relationships between them and the artists. This entices them and could create a loyal fan base. The
teenage artists that represent other youths which perhaps makes the audience want to read about their
own potential, this was done by the shot positioning using confident poses and close shots creating
direct mode of address as well as the informality of the text. This is similar to other magazines such as
Billboard that grab the attention of their audience by relating. By doing this it means that the audience is
positioned to get the preferred reading of the media text.
