How Did The Plague Affect Athenian Culture
A sickness which started in the head then developed to affect every part of the body, is an under rated,
mild description of the Plague of Athens. Thucydides explains that the plague not only harshly
affected men s physical bodies, but also their actions. People began to become fearful of becoming
infected, which caused them to avoid visiting friends and family members who were afflicted with the
disease. Furthermore, the plague also negatively affected the character of the Athenian people. The
intense fear of having the disease even motivated men to become indifferent to every rule of religion
or of law : individuals began to act self indulgently because they believed that they would not be alive
long enough to be brought to trial or punished.

Melisane Alternate Ending
Melisande gave her such a wide smile that another wave of gratification spread through Morgana s
chest. She straightened her shoulders and glanced at Merlin. He was looking at her with admiration
and she hastily turned back to Melisande before he saw how pleased Morgana was by his appreciative
gaze.
I m sorry to have intruded, my lady. The young woman lifted the green silk of her mended skirt and
executed a proper curtsey.
That s all right, Melisande. Morgana gave her a cool nod. I apologize our lesson today will be
postponed. Tomorrow, I promise, I ll make you work twice as hard.
A smile lit the young woman s round face. I look forward to it, my lady.

Morgana moved toward one of the withering rose bushes. She held out a hand and whispered a spell.
The leaves spread wider and greener and the wilted flowers opened again to display vibrant red
blooms.
They re beautiful. Merlin s eyes moved over the rows of bushes and stalks in square plots. Did you do
all this? His gesture encompassed the entire tiny garden.
Yes. The spark of pride that always warmed her when she surveyed her flower garden was redoubled
at the admiration in his gaze.
He looked around again at the stiffening plants. Then he crouched down, laid one hand on a patch of
bare earth, and spoke a spell similar to the one she had used.
Her eyes widened as every rose bush burst into blooms of all colours more colours than they had
displayed at the height of summer and every other flower awakened as if each had reached its peak
season. The cornflowers were bluer than the pale sky above and the lavender s scents competed with
lilacs in all shades from white to dark purple.
She looked at him in awe and then narrowed her gaze. Is this why you could always find flowers to
pick no matter what time of year it

Advantages Of Throw Away Prototyping
Throw away Prototyping Methodology
Introduction:
Throw away prototyping is use to develop or create application as fast as possible. It helps in creating
a part of future application to ensure that a new develop feature is technically feasible. It is different
from sketching, as the sketching is more graphical and concerned towards the user interfaces and
experience and it does not requires or consist of writing programming chunks or codes snippets.
The throw away prototyping is also called closed ended prototype. It is refers to the creation of a
model that will be discarded rather then making it a part of final delivered software. It is discarded at
the end after completing the project.
A small working model of the software is provided to the end users to conform their requirements, and
to get response or feedback. This small ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Uses
As it gives us knowledge about the defects, issues and problems in early stage of product development
phase so it become more effective and does not give inaccurate result at the end of the finalizing phase
of the product. In this project, the completing of each phase, step by step of throwaway prototyping
methodology is easy and transition from one phase to other phase is quick and fast.Due to this method,
the project is completed on time with less cost.
Throw away prototyping is useful to use when sketching is not enough, and it requires to show the
working of features or when need to show the actual performance or response. TheThrow away
prototyping has many advantages and it is efficient to use, but somehow it become difficult and risky
when dealing with stakeholders and have little knowledge of technical background and in context of
tuff deadline and limited resources.

Napoleon Bonaparte
Napoleon Bonaparte or should I say the Son of the Revolution , I believe was both a preserver and a
destroyer of the French Revolution. In fact, In a sense, Napoleon brought the revolution to an end in
1799, but he was also a child of the revolution (Spielvogel 544, 1). Napoleon had helped the French
people and the French government in various ways; nevertheless, Napoleon thought that constantly
the people owed him. I think that this is how he acted like a child. Napoleon became commander of
the French army in 1796 in Italy. Since he was now the commander he was reliable to do what he had
to for the French without the people owing him anything. Moreover, from the time he became
commander he had fought and won numerous wars beginning ... Show more content on

Europe at one time did have factories which were stocked with quite expensive items, but because of
other companies taking over them prices fell and people were left unemployed. Europe had a high
death rate because of lack of food and terrible living conditions. In Europe there was a lot of poverty
whereas in Great Britain there was not. Because of emigrants coming from all over to Europe
especially, people from Ireland, Europe s population began to grow. It was then that Europe soon
would be exposed to experience industrialization.
How did the Industrial Revolution affect the family, the role of women, and living conditions? The
Industrial Revolution affected families in countless different ways. For the bulk of people who were in
the working class lived in small houses. Considering that these houses were so small, the people in
them would be crammed together. There were 63 families where there were at least five persons to a
bed; and there were some in which even six were packed in one bed, lying at the top and bottom
children and adults (Spievogel 569, 1). The houses were unsanitary and the people from the working
class were more likely to come in contact with a disease. The people of the working class were not as
physically healthy looking because they did not eat and live as well as the middle class or wealthy did.
The working classes had very poor working conditions and were not paid fairly. Not just the men
worked, but women

Importance Of Tourism In Germany
In the German language the word Germany is called something completely different. Deutschland is
the word they use in the German language for Germany ( Interesting Information about Germany ).
Just like how Germany is called Deutschland in the German language is interesting, the tourist
attractions, and the WW2 history and religion in Germany is just as phenomenal. The tourist
attractions, WW2 history, and religion all make Germany the fascinating country that it is today.
Germany has fabulous tourist attractions that have been preserved throughout the centuries. The
scenery is a big part of attracting tourists to Germany. The beautiful German southern Alps along with
gorgeous Rhine, Main, and Danube river valleys make Germany famous for its scenery. Medieval
villages and castles dot this landscaping. In Germany s major cities, there are many theaters, operas,

Arnold s Philosophy on Bodybuilding
Just about everyone who walks the face of the earth has heard of the legendary Arnold
Schwarzenegger. The man is an inspiration to millions of men around the world, both in success and
fitness. Even though times have changed, today s bodybuilders are far bigger than in Arnold s time,
we can still learn a lot from the man that brought bodybuilding to the masses. In his novel, Arnold:
The Education of a Bodybuilder, he thoroughly describes his philosophies and gives the reader insight
on how to become just like him by following simple workout routines. Arnold s approach to
bodybuilding was more mental than physical. For him, it was, and still is, all or nothing. While
competing, he did not go through the motions; he worked out to be ... Show more content on

Arnold understands that the word body building implies that we are undertaking something
constructive. Exercise merely tones and develops existing muscles. In order to build muscles we must
have the nutrients that promote growth (Shwarzenegger, 2005, p. 152).
In fact, eating is at the core of his bodybuilding principles. Many come to him asking what the best
way to gain weight is and he replies by stating it is nutrition along with intensive training. Bulking up
is a sure way of gaining mass, but by simply keeping fat content low and recording what you
consumer in a food log, one can gain, according to him, twelve pounds of pure muscle mass each year
until they reach their body size limit. Most all of the body building philosophies that Arnold puts forth
in his novel seem truthful and in fact are very convincing. Many of these, however, are hard to
believe, especially coming from an individual who has found the perfect physique by using illegal
supplements. Success in body building is usually related to genetics. Sure, you have got to train and
you have got to eat, but the best training and eating program still will not turn the local gym bum into
Arnold Schwarzenegger. The only way to be Arnold is to have his parents, and even then there is a
high probability that the person still will not grow up to look like Arnold. Genetics dictate your height,
bone structure, muscle cell numbers, and fat

Advantages Of Predictive Analytics
Predictive Analytics
Predictive analytics is a technology that makes use of the current and existing database to produce a
trend and predict future outcomes. In short, it does not tell you what will happen in the future.
Most of the companies use a model named Predictable Model that helps them to know as to which
customer is likely to stay and which ones are probably one timers. The model is created after careful
study and scrutiny of the sales records and the result is a score that provides the company with an idea
in regards to the solvency of the customers. This leads to the companies focusing more on the
customers that are not regular and entice them to stay.

Use the process of segmentation to grow a strong base for the customers.
Segmentation is a famous and worldwide used marketing practice which is used to divide a larger and
broader markets into smaller ones consisting of customer having the common interests, wants and
priorities. And then, focusing on those targets and forming strategies to win their loyalty.
Limitations of A Priori Segmentation
Priori segments are the most crucial way of creating market segments. These segments are easy to
define and are easily targeted with mass and media, also advertisement. In a priori segmentation the
market is divided according to existing demographic criteria like age, sex, social status, education etc.
A priori segmentations are also the simplest of all the segmentation to apply and use. A database can
be sorted on the existing data and that data is used to drive sales strategies and marketing campaigns.
Improve Action ability with Predictive Segmentation
The priori segmentation has certain limitations and as a result other models have been developed to
overcome certain limitations. As we know customers vary depending on their behavior and attitudes
so a new approach is introduced called Predictive Segmentation which differentiates groups of
customers and potential customers based on their behavior and their attitude . Predictive Segmentation
has been used successfully in segmentation research for over 20

Cinco De Mayo Essay
Cinco De Mayo Ever since fourth grade, one of my best friends have been Taylor Elam. Over the
years that we ve been friends we ve had some jokes. My mom loves Mexican food; Taylor used to not
like mexican food very much. Whenever our families would go out to eat, my mom would suggest
something mexican. Whenever mexican was suggested by my mom, Taylor would respond of course
Hope wants mexican, and whenever someone would ask where we were going to eat Taylor would
say, Hope wants mexican! which we would always laugh about.
A couple years ago, on Cinco De Mayo, we had a soccer game. We went to the game and afterwards

mom. I am going to get the kids meal though because I am not that hungry. I won t eat it if we take it

The waitress came back to our table. She came down to the kids table and started asking what we
wanted to order. It was my turn, I was a little worried about my order going in correct since she could
hardly understand us. What would you like to order? asked the waitress. I would like the kids nachos.
What all comes on them? I responded. Just chips, meat, and queso. Can I add on lettuce please? Yes.
The waitress finished getting everyone s orders and went back to put them in. It was taking a while for
our food to come so, us kids started coloring, messing around, and eating more of the chips with dip.
My dad and Taylor s mom took a few pictures of Taylor, Megan, and I. We were making silly faces;
we kept laughing. To this day I still have one of the pictures in my room as a memory. After waiting,
we saw some people bringing us our food. I didn t see my kids size nachos anywhere, I got really

Tap Water Contains A Wide Variety Of Organic And Inorganic
Tap water contains a wide variety of organic and inorganic materials, most of which are innocuous.
However, some trace constituents in water, including heavy metals such as copper, zinc, cadmium and
lead, are more problematic. Water leaving a drinking water purification plant will ordinarily contain
negligible levels of lead and other harmful metals. These metals enter the water during distribution,
through the corrosion of service pipes and plumbing in a process called leaching. Metals such as lead
can leach from pipes, old solder or fixtures. Although some corrosion of plumbing is inevitable, the
severity of leaching depends on the material of the pipes, the corrosivity and temperature of water and
the amount of time water is stagnant ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Of these, the Flint Michigan water crises was the most publicized, as it was exposed through media
attention after delayed action from the EPA and state government, and only after widespread elevation
in blood lead levels (EBLL) of residents had induced long term and even permanent health
consequences (Romain, 2016).
As a result of increased public concern regarding water quality following the Flint Michigan water
crisis, Chicago Public Schools began a water testing program to analyze lead levels in drinking water.
Of 527 schools in the CPS system, 327 CPS campuses were tested by Chicago Public School s Water
Testing Program in spring of 2016. Analysis of water in these schools, conducted by the EPA, revealed
that of the 6,167 water fixtures tested on these campuses, 184 fixtures from 113 schools returned with
levels above the lead action level of 15 parts per billion (ppb). In total, 34.56% of the initially tested
campuses had at least one fixture that exceeded EPA action levels (Chicago Public Schools, 20161).
The CPS school selected for testing in this research project was not tested in the initial round of
testing in spring of 2016. However, the selected school was tested the following school year, in
October of 2017. Results from the CPS testing indicated that none of the school s fixtures exceeded
15ppb, however, lead levels below EPA action level were found, ranging from 2.1ppb to 11ppb. Of the

Dual Language Adoption Paper
Currently, school districts statewide are required to identify limited English Proficiency (LEP)
students and adopt policies in providing programing which is mainly locally funded with some state
aid. The Office for Bilingual Education and Foreign Language Studies were established in 1969. Over
the last decade, there has been a growth in the number of dual language programs in the US with goals
of bilingualism and biliteracy but many of these programs are expensive and exclusive. (Franklin,
2013) Texas has the second largest ELL population and the largest bilingual education program where
there are 7 school districts that offer two way dual language programs which are offered to both native
English speakers and native Spanish speakers. Florida has the Coral Way School, a genuine bilingual
program, which has been successful, receiving many accolades since 1936. In 2010, Florida had a
population of 227,000 LEP students for which their districts are required to prepare and submit plans
for ELL one way developmental bilingual education or dual language services. (Queens University,

The Great Gatsby published in 1925 written by F. Scott...
The Great Gatsby published in 1925 written by F. Scott Fitzgerald is a classic American novel that
defines 1920 s America very well or as Fitzgerald calls it in the Great Gatsby the Jazz Age. He wanted
to show that the Jazz Age was a time of loose social and moral values, as well as to show the reckless
life styles people lived. The book is set right after WWI which was a time of prosperity in America.
During the war everyone had double the income and less expenses because the men were getting paid
for fighting in the war and the women had to get jobs to keep the country running, which caused an
excess of funds in most families. The Prohibition was also occurring at this time which gave people
the opportunity to get rich quick through ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Gatsby and Wolfshiem are two good examples of people who were taking advantage of those
opportunities. The book was set in the nineteen twenty s which was a great time in American history.
In this decade, America became one of the wealthiest countries in the world. One of the reasons for
this wealth was the Prohibition, which was the ban of alcohol. Another reason for America s wealth
was that this was right after World War I. Both of these added the to wealth and is most likely how this
era became known as the Jazz Age, which was a time to just have a good time and enjoy life, because
people did not really care about anything but having a good time and the could afford to do that or so
they thought. The Eighteenth Amendment, better known as the prohibition, was the banning of
alcoholic beverages which lasted from nineteen twenty to nineteen thirty three. The amendment was
passed to try and lower the crime rate and over all improve life, but what it really did was open doors
for a new kind of crime. When alcohol was banned criminals saw an opportunity to make easy money
and make it fast which is how bootlegging and speakeasies became very popular. Bootleggers were
people who made and sold alcohol under the table to the people who had money to blow. Speakeasies
were hidden bars that people would go to they were usually located in the back of pharmacies or
restaurants. To get into a speakeasy you had to know someone

Tipping Point Analysis
A Synthesis of Tipping Points The 21st century experiences countless fashions and trends as they
come and go.
There are many new shirts, new book genres, new flashy games etc. that are not uncommon news
headlines. However, one must consider exactly how these trends spill into mainstream outlets in the
first place. What causes an arbitrary fashion choice to become the epitome of a teenage girl s dream
shoe closet? What causes a noxious and hazardous activity to become a full blown addiction? In
Malcolm Gladwell s The Tipping Point: How Little Things Can Make a Big Difference, he focuses on
finding the answer to such questions. His work specifically proposes a theory on how mainstream
epidemics gain initial traction and can simply tip and grow exponentially. A mainstream trend does not
merely appear without warning most likely, the thought behind the trend had been around for a while.
According to Gladwell, in order for a trend to grow amidst the influx of newer trends, three types of
people must be working hard behind the scenes. In the chapter Case Study: Rumors, Sneakers, and the
Power of Translation , Gladwell details the roles of Connectors, Mavens, and Salesmen, and how they
unknowingly act together as a bridge between hipsters and mainstream media. Gladwell s assessment
of the Connectors is valid, as they play the role of the bridge itself as he/she has to be cogent and
merge two completely different strata. An excellent portrayal of this would be Gladwell s example

An Analysis Of Weisman s The World Without Us
The Power of Nature: Rhetorical Strategies in Weisman s The World Without Us: Unbuilding Our
Homes In the book World Without Us, author Alan Weisman talks about what would happen to the
natural and built environment we ve established if humans suddenly disappeared. In Chapter two,
Unbuilding Our Home, Weisman effectively informs his readers of the total control that nature has on
our society by describing the immediate effect it takes on our own homes. He forces the readers to
recognize that we coexist with nature yet nature has the upper hand on man made objects. Weisman
achieves this by targeting the reader s emotions through description and personification and by
providing insight that appeals to the reader s intellect of the future. In Chapter 2, Weisman walks us
meticulously through the steps that lead inevitably to the complete destruction of almost every single
part of our houses. The first and last enemy is water. Water sneaks in at the weak points of roofs, near
the chimney. Mold begins to grow on wet wood; under the mold, threadlike filaments called hyphae
are secreting enzymes that break cellulose and lignin down into fungi food. (page 16) The roof falls in.
More water enters through the windows, some shattered when birds flew into them. The floor
corrodes. Squirrels and lizards eat the drywall. Vinyl siding begins to crack as its plasticizers weaken.
Even aluminum begins to break down, as salt eats it away. Steel gas pipes begin to rust away.

Trifles Analysis
Woman
Susan Glaspell shows her readers that women will no longer be in the background. By writing Trifles
she gave women an outlook they have never received before. Trifles is a coming up story about
women, in other words its about women and their rise to power. Glaspell embodies the women spirit
by showing the power, conning, and intectellt of the women in her play.
When people think of power the first thing that comes to mind is a man Women are shown to be weak,
mindless and serving, but in Trifles Glaspell depicts women to have more fire and power. In 1900 s
women were housewives they did not own anything and did what they were told kind of like slaves.
Trifles shows Mrs. Peters, Mrs. Hale and Mrs. Wright as something much more than that. Right in the
beginning (1860) it shows that Mrs. Wright might have committed murder.Trifles shows that this
woman could have possess the power to kill a man. That was unheard of in the 1900 s because women
did not speak out or defend themselves against a man. Mrs. Hale shows just a snippet of her power
when The County Attorney on page (1861) says Dirty towels! Not much of a housekeeper, would you
say, ladies? Mrs.Hale claps back with There s a great deal of work to be done on a farm. Mrs. Hales
defends Mrs. Wright because she knows just how difficult it is to maintain a household and didn t feel
that was necessary because they had Mrs. Wright leave in a hurry. Mrs. Hale yet again shows she is
not afraid of what is to come on page (1864) she undoes the knot on the quilt and the sewing comes
undone. Mrs.Hale at this time knows that this quilt is evidence but does not care and starts to sew.
Mrs. Peters finally shows she is capable of having powerful demeanor on page (1866) she says ...If
they hadn t held me back I would have... hurt him. A boy killed her cat and that made her angry
enough to think about hurting and possibly killing him. Power has many different forms and women
are starting to take on that form.
Women are capable of many things and being conning is just one of them. People lie all the time to get
away with things they do not want to get in trouble for. For a woman to lie was unheard of especially
to an attorney and sheriff. Mrs.

Pirates Of The Caribbean Analysis
Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, directed by Gore Verbinski, is one of the most
influential pieces of cinema in the disney movie franchise. The movie was well received by the
majority of people that viewed it. However, not everyone was as impressed with the movie, like film
critic Roger Ebert for example. While Ebert, at the time working as a film critic for Chicago Sun
Times, gave the movie three stars, there are some critiques that are incredibly incorrect. The article
focuses a lot on the stellar performances of Johnny Depp and Geoffrey Rush, Jack Sparrow and
Barbossa respectively, while making light of the respectable performance of Keira Knightley as
Elizabeth Swann. He also spends a good segment of his review bashing the action scenes and deeming
them pointless based on the plot of the movie. Overall, Roger Ebert believes the movie was decent,
but went on for far too long, calling it, a nice little 90 minute B movie trapped inside the 143 minutes
of Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (rogerebert.com). There is an argument to be
made about Roger Ebert s rollercoaster ride of a review on Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the
Black Pearl, especially concerning his opinions on the performances of some of the actors and the
fighting. While the performances of Geoffrey Rush and Johnny Depp were indeed marvelous, Roger
Ebert s opinion on the performance of Keira Knightley could not be more wrong. Ebert describes her

The modern world was created through many events such as Scientific Revolutions, factors such as
religion, money, and even the creation and fall of widely known empires. With these revolutions,
factors and institutions it shaped the world from the start to how we see the world now. One revolution
couldn t happen without the start of another down the road, and the fall of one empire would spark the
start of another. These are only a few reasons of how the modern world was created. The most
important ones that shaped the world we live in today are religion, money, and the Scientific
Revolution.
Religion can be defined as a system of human norms and values that is founded on a belief in a
superhuman order (p.210). Religion helped cultures define ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Without the evolution of money from shells and skills that people had we would not have bills and
coins and our trade would be limited greatly and this would not make us a modern world. A money
system needed to happen for the world to continue effectively. As well as the evolution of religion this
plays a big part in how we communicate with each other. If religion empires would have not been
conquered by people who believe in humanist religions we could possibly still be under a rule where
people have to summit to a certain religion. Lastly the Scientific Revolution was able to shape our
modern world for the best. The Scientific Revolution almost coincided with the Industrial Revolution
in that new technology emerged. It also created modern medicine which is vital to anyone in todays
world. Although it funded capitalist creed it was not such a bad thing because we need capital in our
world to keep finding new findings. People are not just going to go and explore unknown parts of the
world for free. Our modern world is a beautiful place even though some issues that occurred during
the formation of modernization the planet are still being worked on today.

Radio And Optical Wireless Communication
This collaborative effort outlines a comprehensive framework to apply novel radio and optical
wireless communications with channel coding to develop energy efficient and secure links for the
problem of limited spectrum resource in future wireless applications. In particular, the project aims to
study the fundamental properties and develop practical solutions for a hybrid RF/optical system that
combines energy efficient ultra wideband architectures with secure and RF spectrum saving optical
technology.
Future mobile applications demand novel wireless communication technologies to address the new
challenges associated with the shortage of radio spectrum [1 5], the need for low power radio
architectures
[6 9], and secure communication ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The key idea is to combine the advantages of localized short range
UWB IR and longer range optical wireless communication, and use jointly optimized LDPC coding to
improve the link reliability with low complexity encoder and decoder circuits. To achieve these goals,
as illustrated in Fig. 1, the proposed research will also focus on designing the UWB/optical relaying
circuits and hybrid communication protocol, exploiting network diversity and coding for hybrid
channels, and investigating low complexity LDPC encoder/decoder circuits with soft information for
UWB IR.
The advantages of UWB IR and optical communication compensate each other s shortcomings very
well, as illustrated in Fig 1. For example, UWB IR is power efficient; however, to achieve ultra low
power, the transmission distance of UWB must be short (sometimes less than 1 meter). When a longer
range is demanded, the power consumption of the UWB transceiver increases dramatically since the
received power varies as d−γ, where d is the transmission distance and γ is the path loss exponent [36
38]. In other words, increasing RF transmission distance will significantly shorten the battery lifetime.
This power/distance trade off of UWB can be alleviated by employing a UWB/optical relaying device.
The stationary relaying devices use dedicated power lines so the battery powered UWB terminals can

The Ocean Has Been My Favorite Environment
For as long as I can remember, the ocean has been my favorite environment. It s the only place that I
constantly feel at one with the earth and my surroundings. From an early age I always had an idea on
what I wanted to pursue as my career. I would read books about the oceanic world below and The
Great Barrier Reef in Australia. It wasn t until I encountered a wild dolphin at Clearwater beach,
Florida that I decided to be a marine biologist. The dolphin was so friendly and welcoming, swimming
by me and my brother and allowing us to stroke his slimy skin. That experience will stick with me
forever and is a huge part of why I want to pursue a career in marine biology.
When I chose to be a marine biologist, my parents were very supportive. They would take us to the
beach as much as possible for vacations, but also for me to be in that environment often. There are
numerous goals that I would hope to accomplish in my field like being promoted to the highest
position possible and being paid the maximum salary. Those goals will motivate me to work to my
fullest potential and always work my hardest. My ultimate goal is of course to help the world by
finding better ways to help out the ocean biome and to make the animals that live there become safer.
Making sure the animals are being treated good and the environment will help the surface world in
multiple ways.
A marine biologist is someone who studies all types of sea creatures, and can choose to specialize in

The Case Marbury V. Madison
In the early years of the Republic, states came often in front of the Supreme Court to resolve disputes
of issue of the supremacy of the National Government. In 1803 the case Marbury v. Madison held that
Congress cannot pass laws that are contrary to the Constitution, and it is the role of the Judicial
System to interpret what the Constitution permits. The discrepancies between the Federal Government
and the States occurred often, as the States were not happy to give up their power to the Federal
Government. Late 1810 raised the issue of the financial stability of the states, banks were
comprehended as the symbol of power and privilege, and were despised by the vast majority of the
people. During the Anglo American War in 1812, many banks collapsed under the tough economic
atmosphere. Survival Banks chartered by the states were also not in good position. They lacked
sufficient credit to support during the War time and in the post war situation also. In 1811, the charter
of the First Bank of the United States has been expired, and the federal government found itself not
able to finance the war. In 1816, Congress accorded a charter to the Second Bank of the United States
and contributed with one fifth of the bank s capital of $35 million. Before the Federal Governemnt
chartered the Second Bank of the United States, and before a single form of currency was set, the state
chartered banks had less government restrictions and were able to speculate on their bank policies.

Essay on Gender Discrimination at Walmart
Walmart, the world s largest retailer and private employer, has established a highly profitable business
centered on a low cost strategy that utilizes logistical efficiencies to create a competitive advantage.
Yet, to maintain this low cost strategy, Walmart has engaged in ethically questionable practices,
including gender discrimination in promotion and pay. While the Supreme Court recently ruled against
class certification of 1.5 million women in the Dukes v. Walmart case due to a lack of proof that
Walmart operated under a general policy of discrimination , overwhelming evidence demonstrates that
gender discrimination is a persistent problem rooted in the culture of Walmart, despite gender neutral
policies (Biskupic, 2011).

The low female representation in management paradox is particularly interesting, given that Walmart
trumpets its practice of promoting from within , boasting that 76% of store managers come from the
ranks of hourly associates (Lichenstein, 2007). Yet, statistician Richard Drogin found that women
receive significantly fewer promotions into Support Manager, Management Trainee, Co Manager and
Store Manager positions than would be expected based on their representation in feeder pools (Drogin,
2013). In particular, women received 2,952 fewer promotions than would be expected into the
Management Trainee position, a pre requisite for assuming salaried, management level jobs, despite
having longer tenures and higher performance review ratings than male counterparts (See Appendix,
Figure 7).
The subjective nature for enrollment in the management trainee program serves as a persistent,
structural impediment. With minimal oversight, store managers utilize a tap on the shoulder system
and exercise extreme latitude in candidate selection for management trainee positions (Declaration
Summaries, 2011). As a result, men averaged 2.9 years from date of hire until first being promoted to
Assistant Manager and 8.6 years from hire until first being promoted to Store Manager, as compared
to the 4.4 years and 10.1 years for women to be promoted to the same positions (Drogin, 2013). This

Periodic Trends Of Chemical Properties
Periodic Trends of Chemical and Physical Properties in Group 1A and 7A
Hamish Thomson, Chemistry 11.2, Mr Ryan O Sullivan
Intro:
In chemistry, there are two classes of observable properties matter can display; chemical and physical.
These properties are classified by what needs to happen to the substance before the property becomes
evident. Chemical properties require a chemical change while physical properties don t need a
chemical change to occur. Four properties of the alkali metals and halogens will be talked about
through this essay, two chemical and two physical. The two chemical properties will be reactivity, how
willing a substance is to undergo a chemical change and toxicity, the ability of a substance to cause
damage to an ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In Fig 1 the reactivity of Non Metals decreases every period and increases every group, the halogens
lie on the end of the group of Non metals causing them to be highly reactive. The alkali metals have a
single electron in their outer electron shell, making it easy for them to become a noble gas and period
down the periodic table the easier it is to get rid of the extra electron, causing the alkali metals to
become more reactive the further down the periods. To become a noble gas a halogen must gain an
electron, the farther away the outer shell is from the nucleus, the more energy that is required for an
electron to enter the shell. Halogens need one more electron to become a noble gas, while alkali
metals need to donate an electron to become a noble gas. (Johnsonburg High School, n.d.) Fig 1. This
shows the trends of the reactivity of Metals and non metals on the periodic table.
Paragraph 3. Toxicity
Toxicity is how dangerous a substance is to an organism, it is commonly measured by the amount
required to kill 50% of the population of a given organism. The toxicity of the alkali metals increases
each period, due to the increase in reactivity. The toxicity of the halogens decreases as you go down
until astatine, which is harmful due to radioactivity (Helmenstine, 2017).
Paragraph 4. What is a physical property:
A physical property is a property of matter that can be observed without causing a

Good evening ladies, gentlemen, adjudicators and the opposition. The topic of tonight s debate is that

These so called elite athletes are so professional , then why do we even have the need for drug testing?
If elite athletes demonstrated an acceptable standard of professionalism, then there would be no need
for this drug testing business because the athletes would be able to be trusted. As our first speaker has
stated, elite athletes have a winning mindset. This could be one of the reasons they choose to use as an
excuse for taking drugs and cheating, to be the best all the time, because that it how they were brought
up. A study shows that doping prevalence may be as high as 48%. Even before elite level they take
low level drugs such as: pre workout drugs, Anabolic steroids, Androstenedione, Human Growth
Hormone (HGH), Erythropoietin, Diuretics, Creatine and Stimulants. These drugs are so harmful, yet
so many are constantly using them. What kind of imprint is this making on our youth, the young,
impressionable minds of today, that look up to these elite athletes as their role models? This brings me
on to my next point, regarding why athletes need the good behavioural contracts to stipulate their
behaviour.
Why do elite athletes need good behavioural contracts to stipulate what they can and can t do? If their
professionalism was to an acceptable standard, then they would already know what they can and can t

What was once believed to be a form of neglect has resulted in a change in practice with the idea that

palliative and hospice care lie within the desires of the family and patients. A thorough understanding
of our surrounding demographics helps to ensure a seamless approach to providing care without bias
or imposition of ones beliefs. However, just as with all things, providing care for the sick and
comforting the dying should be rendered in moderation as to prevent the effects of burn out. Likewise,
the same effects occur in the caregivers who sacrifice their responsibilities in order to care for their

Student Disability Inclusion Decisions
Student Disability and Inclusion Decisions
Elisabeta B. Coman
Sierra Nevada College Introduction
Students who receive family support for their academic performance have high goals. Usually, when a
student is identified in need of an individualized educational plan (IEP), the school intervenes to help
set these instructional goals. Essex (2008) states, The IEP is tailored specifically to meet the needs of
the child with disabilities . Below is a case study of a student with disabilities inclusion in regular
educational classes.
Sterns is justified in his decision because predicting the challenges that the special education student
will confront is his duty. School districts must utilize standards that identify the skill of a person with
disabilities rather than his or her impairments (Essex, 2008, p. 166). By placing a student in regular
nonacademic courses, the school ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The parents are aware that they are requesting the school to make the appropriate accommodations.
Receiving a denial seems as if the school is not willing to offer the adjustments under the Americans

perform at the same rate as a student placed in regular classes.
The special education law on inclusion suggests, School districts... have the responsibility of ensuring
that a reasonable standard of care is met when regular teachers work with students who have
disabilities (Essex, 2008, p. 149). Moreover, schools are required to monitor on a systematic basis that
the standards are met. By not following the law, the schools are susceptible to lawsuits. The special
educator is responsible for such monitoring. Essex (2008) adds, The lack of funds should not be used
by the school districts as the basis to deny children with a disability a public education (Essex, 2008,

Ending Animal Cruelty
Animal testing is used internationally to understand and create medicines and to test the safety of
products. Almost 20 million animals are experimented on and killed annually worldwide, an estimated
eight million of which are subjects in experiments involving pain while at least 10 percent of these
animals do not receive painkillers (Andre Velasquez, 1988). Clearly these experimentations are
reducing the quality of life for these animals, and as such there has been growing criticism of animal
testing and the ethical questions that arise when studying these experiments. There is also a concern
for the consequential threats to scientific and biomedical progress that they bring, however alternative
testing methods have produced equally effective results therefore ending the debate over whether such
experiments are necessary ( Animal experimentation , 2014). Overall, animal testing is unethical and
must be stopped as it is immoral to inflict suffering on non consenting sentient beings and there are
reasonable and successful alternatives available. Animals are conscious beings with desires, beliefs,
and the ability to experience pain and pleasure. Their lives have inherent value and using them as
simply a means towards our ends is unethical. Philosopher Jeremy Bentham described his philosophy
of utilitarianism as the greatest happiness or greatest felicity principle , and applied a form of ethical
utilitarianism to animal rights. If the moral worth of an action is

Advancements in Information Technology have now made it possible to restore hearing to the
profoundly deaf by inserting a prosthetic device called the Bionic Ear (also known as the Cochlear
Implant) in an individual s inner ear. The Bionic Ear technology is an example of design and
innovation combined with information processing, software design and development. Since it was first

The device can be implanted to aid two types of individuals:
The Post Lingual Deaf: individuals who have learnt a spoken language before going deaf.
The Profoundly Deaf: individuals who have lost their hearing before they acquired language.
How does the technology work?
The Bionic Ear consists of two main components:
1. an electronic device, which is surgically implanted under the skin behind the ear.
2. An external speech processor that is worn on a belt or placed in a pocket. A microphone is also
worn outside of the body as a headpiece behind the ear to obtain sounds.
Sounds and speech are captured by a microphone and sent to the external speech processor. The
processor then translates the sounds into electrical signals, which are then sent to the transmitting coil.
These codes travel up a cable to the headpiece and are transmitted across the skin through radio waves
to the implanted cochlea electrodes. The electrodes signals then stimulate the auditory nerve fibres to
send information to the brain where it is interpreted as meaningful sound.
(Social Aspects) Advantages
The Bionic Ear has revolutionised the lives of deaf individuals all over the world, it is not only a great
scientific achievement, but also a great progression in a socio cultural context within the lives and
communities of the deaf and hearing impaired individuals. The Bionic Ear with the aid of IT has

Workplace Diversity And The Workplace
Workplace Diversity Many outstanding articles, books, journals and papers have been written
regarding the topic of workforce diversity. Some are relatively short papers such as Diversity in the
Workplace published by the University of Florida, and seek to provide the reader with a basic
understanding of what is meant by workplace diversity, as well as the potential benefits to both
employers and employees alike. Other resources can be significantly more in depth and explore
subtopics of workplace diversity including the effects of marriage on work place attitudes, or how to
effectively manage the cultural and demographic differences within a firm s labor pool. Information
regarding generalities in different cultures around the globe is also available as a resource for those
seeking to understand customs in mannerisms and body language across varying cultures. In addition
to the many websites and literature available to employers, there are also companies such as Big

An Overview Glass Of Glass

An Overview of Glass
One of the most used materials in human history is glass or more specifically silicate glass. Although
some types of glasses are called crystal glass, glass is actually an amorphous solid and does not have a
crystal structure. It is used in all walks of life ranging from homes to automobiles to laboratories.
Historically, the one of the first types of glass that was used by humans to make tools and weapons
was the volcanic glass known as obsidian. As for manmade glass, the earliest accounts date back to
5000 BC in the middle east. Primitive methods of glass making were used until about 100BC, when
glassblowing was believed to be discovered. This discovery made glass products popular in the
Roman Empire since the development of glassblowing allowed glass production to be more efficient
and thus less expensive. As the centuries went on more techniques were developed which eventually
lead to glass products being widespread. This paper will discuss some of the methods of glass
production throughout history, the types of silicate glass, and the different ways that glass can be
colored.
One of the early methods of glass making was called core forming. This technique made use of a
metal rod that had clay attached at one end. The end of the rod with the clay around it was either
lowered into molten glass or the glass was poured onto the clay. The glass surrounding the clay would
solidify

The Importance Of Water In Water By John Steinbeck
Water is also an essential part of Steinbeck s connection of setting to familial conflict, with the lack of
water sowing seeds of discontent in both families, though Steinbeck s aforementioned theme of choice
between good and evil defines what both families do with such misfortune. Lack of water on their
property allows the Hamiltons to grow closer, with Samuel s disappointment with his lack of success
in farming being outweighed by his joy in his children, Water would have made them comparatively
rich...all in all it was a good firm grounded family....Samuel was well pleased with the fruit of his
loins, (Steinbeck 507). By contrast, the drought of the land in Adam s family is representative of the
lack of parenting, how Adam is completely devoid of emotion once Cathy leaves, Adam looked more
gaunt than Samuel remembered. His eyes were dull, as though he did not use them much for seeing,
(655). This juxtaposition is further emphasized by Samuel s biblical connection, as Samuel was a
prophet, a man who could see into the future and thus see the value in raising children despite the
difficulties while Adam cannot see beyond his own hardship. Furthermore, the lack of water enrichs
the idea that if a family preserves through such difficulties, they will be greatly rewarded, And the
Lord will continually guide you, and satisfy your desire in scorched places, and give strength to your
bones, and you will be like a watered garden, and like a spring of water whose waters do not

The Importance Of A Student And My Impression Management
Good morning Boonville, Missouri. It is 4:30 AM, I am Lance the higher learner, and there is work,
try to think of it as fun, to do. This morning I am playing the role of a student and I start it by combing
my hair, dressing, turning on the computer, the lights, and pointing the fan at me. Even though no one
sees me here, I pay attention to my impression management, as it results in a continual realignment of
the individuals performances, as the actors refit their roles using dress, objects, voice, and gestures in
a joint enterprise (Chambliss Eglitis, 2016, p. 96). With everything in place I fancy myself not only in
school, but confronting and solving the world s problems to an Einstein envy. There is a purpose to my
early morning routine. I am working with my learned preconventional stage theory, where people seek
simply to achieve personal gain or avoid punishment (Chambliss Eglitis, 2016, p. 85). Waiting for the
world to self destruct I can see through the window it has not. It is a dewy morning, and the dogs have
gotten a drink and went back to bed. I do wonder if I came back to school because it was the right
time, unemployment through the accident, or a feeling of missing out on what could be (Hardiman,
2014, p. 33). Some feeling of intelligence has allowed me to enroll when previously I believed school
was only for people smarter than me. Regardless of the reason I feel indebted to the cosmos for the
opportunity. Being that I am not seen here

  • 2. How Did The Plague Affect Athenian Culture A sickness which started in the head then developed to affect every part of the body, is an under rated, mild description of the Plague of Athens. Thucydides explains that the plague not only harshly affected men s physical bodies, but also their actions. People began to become fearful of becoming infected, which caused them to avoid visiting friends and family members who were afflicted with the disease. Furthermore, the plague also negatively affected the character of the Athenian people. The intense fear of having the disease even motivated men to become indifferent to every rule of religion or of law : individuals began to act self indulgently because they believed that they would not be alive long enough to be brought to trial or punished. ... • 3. Melisane Alternate Ending Melisande gave her such a wide smile that another wave of gratification spread through Morgana s chest. She straightened her shoulders and glanced at Merlin. He was looking at her with admiration and she hastily turned back to Melisande before he saw how pleased Morgana was by his appreciative gaze. I m sorry to have intruded, my lady. The young woman lifted the green silk of her mended skirt and executed a proper curtsey. That s all right, Melisande. Morgana gave her a cool nod. I apologize our lesson today will be postponed. Tomorrow, I promise, I ll make you work twice as hard. A smile lit the young woman s round face. I look forward to it, my lady. Although the corners of her mouth twitched in response, Morgana carefully schooled ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Morgana moved toward one of the withering rose bushes. She held out a hand and whispered a spell. The leaves spread wider and greener and the wilted flowers opened again to display vibrant red blooms. They re beautiful. Merlin s eyes moved over the rows of bushes and stalks in square plots. Did you do all this? His gesture encompassed the entire tiny garden. Yes. The spark of pride that always warmed her when she surveyed her flower garden was redoubled at the admiration in his gaze. He looked around again at the stiffening plants. Then he crouched down, laid one hand on a patch of bare earth, and spoke a spell similar to the one she had used. • 4. Advantages Of Throw Away Prototyping Throw away Prototyping Methodology Introduction: Throw away prototyping is use to develop or create application as fast as possible. It helps in creating a part of future application to ensure that a new develop feature is technically feasible. It is different from sketching, as the sketching is more graphical and concerned towards the user interfaces and experience and it does not requires or consist of writing programming chunks or codes snippets. The throw away prototyping is also called closed ended prototype. It is refers to the creation of a model that will be discarded rather then making it a part of final delivered software. It is discarded at the end after completing the project. A small working model of the software is provided to the end users to conform their requirements, and to get response or feedback. In fact, In a sense, Napoleon brought the revolution to an end in 1799, but he was also a child of the revolution (Spielvogel 544, 1). Napoleon had helped the French people and the French government in various ways; nevertheless, Napoleon thought that constantly the people owed him. I think that this is how he acted like a child. Europe had a high death rate because of lack of food and terrible living conditions. In Europe there was a lot of poverty whereas in Great Britain there was not. Because of emigrants coming from all over to Europe especially, people from Ireland, Europe s population began to grow. It was then that Europe soon would be exposed to experience industrialization. How did the Industrial Revolution affect the family, the role of women, and living conditions? The Industrial Revolution affected families in countless different ways. For the bulk of people who were in the working class lived in small houses. Considering that these houses were so small, the people in them would be crammed together. There were 63 families where there were at least five persons to a bed; and there were some in which even six were packed in one bed, lying at the top and bottom children and adults (Spievogel 569, 1). The houses were unsanitary and the people from the working class were more likely to come in contact with a disease. In order to build muscles we must have the nutrients that promote growth (Shwarzenegger, 2005, p. 152). In fact, eating is at the core of his bodybuilding principles. Many come to him asking what the best way to gain weight is and he replies by stating it is nutrition along with intensive training. Bulking up is a sure way of gaining mass, but by simply keeping fat content low and recording what you consumer in a food log, one can gain, according to him, twelve pounds of pure muscle mass each year until they reach their body size limit. Most all of the body building philosophies that Arnold puts forth in his novel seem truthful and in fact are very convincing. Many of these, however, are hard to believe, especially coming from an individual who has found the perfect physique by using illegal supplements. However, some trace constituents in water, including heavy metals such as copper, zinc, cadmium and lead, are more problematic. These metals enter the water during distribution, through the corrosion of service pipes and plumbing in a process called leaching. Metals such as lead can leach from pipes, old solder or fixtures. Another reason for America s wealth was that this was right after World War I. There are many new shirts, new book genres, new flashy games etc. that are not uncommon news headlines. However, one must consider exactly how these trends spill into mainstream outlets in the first place. What causes an arbitrary fashion choice to become the epitome of a teenage girl s dream shoe closet? What causes a noxious and hazardous activity to become a full blown addiction? In Malcolm Gladwell s The Tipping Point: How Little Things Can Make a Big Difference, he focuses on finding the answer to such questions. His work specifically proposes a theory on how mainstream epidemics gain initial traction and can simply tip and grow exponentially. A mainstream trend does not merely appear without warning most likely, the thought behind the trend had been around for a while. According to Gladwell, in order for a trend to grow amidst the influx of newer trends, three types of people must be working hard behind the scenes. In the chapter Case Study: Rumors, Sneakers, and the Power of Translation , Gladwell details the roles of Connectors, Mavens, and Salesmen, and how they unknowingly act together as a bridge between hipsters and mainstream media. Trifles is a coming up story about women, in other words its about women and their rise to power. Glaspell embodies the women spirit by showing the power, conning, and intectellt of the women in her play. When people think of power the first thing that comes to mind is a man Women are shown to be weak, mindless and serving, but in Trifles Glaspell depicts women to have more fire and power. In 1900 s women were housewives they did not own anything and did what they were told kind of like slaves. Trifles shows Mrs. Peters, Mrs. Hale and Mrs. Wright as something much more than that. Right in the beginning (1860) it shows that Mrs. Wright might have committed murder.Trifles shows that this woman could have possess the power to kill a man. That was unheard of in the 1900 s because women did not speak out or defend themselves against a man. Mrs. Hale shows just a snippet of her power when The County Attorney on page (1861) says Dirty towels! Not much of a housekeeper, would you say, ladies? Mrs. Hales defends Mrs. Wright because she knows just how difficult it is to maintain a household and didn t feel that was necessary because they had Mrs. Wright leave in a hurry. While Ebert, at the time working as a film critic for Chicago Sun Times, gave the movie three stars, there are some critiques that are incredibly incorrect. The article focuses a lot on the stellar performances of Johnny Depp and Geoffrey Rush, Jack Sparrow and Barbossa respectively, while making light of the respectable performance of Keira Knightley as Elizabeth Swann. For example, UWB IR is power efficient; however, to achieve ultra low power, the transmission distance of UWB must be short (sometimes less than 1 meter). When a longer range is demanded, the power consumption of the UWB transceiver increases dramatically since the received power varies as d−γ, where d is the transmission distance and γ is the path loss exponent [36 38]. • 24. The Case Marbury V. Madison In the early years of the Republic, states came often in front of the Supreme Court to resolve disputes of issue of the supremacy of the National Government. In 1803 the case Marbury v. Madison held that Congress cannot pass laws that are contrary to the Constitution, and it is the role of the Judicial System to interpret what the Constitution permits. The discrepancies between the Federal Government and the States occurred often, as the States were not happy to give up their power to the Federal Government. Late 1810 raised the issue of the financial stability of the states, banks were comprehended as the symbol of power and privilege, and were despised by the vast majority of the people. During the Anglo American War in 1812, many banks collapsed under the tough economic atmosphere. Survival Banks chartered by the states were also not in good position. They lacked sufficient credit to support during the War time and in the post war situation also. In 1811, the charter of the First Bank of the United States has been expired, and the federal government found itself not able to finance the war. In 1816, Congress accorded a charter to the Second Bank of the United States and contributed with one fifth of the bank s capital of $35 million. Before the Federal Governemnt chartered the Second Bank of the United States, and before a single form of currency was set, the state chartered banks had less government restrictions and were able to speculate on their bank policies. Essay on Gender Discrimination at Walmart Walmart, the world s largest retailer and private employer, has established a highly profitable business centered on a low cost strategy that utilizes logistical efficiencies to create a competitive advantage. Yet, to maintain this low cost strategy, Walmart has engaged in ethically questionable practices, including gender discrimination in promotion and pay. While the Supreme Court recently ruled against class certification of 1.5 million women in the Dukes v. The low female representation in management paradox is particularly interesting, given that Walmart trumpets its practice of promoting from within , boasting that 76% of store managers come from the ranks of hourly associates (Lichenstein, 2007). Yet, statistician Richard Drogin found that women receive significantly fewer promotions into Support Manager, Management Trainee, Co Manager and Store Manager positions than would be expected based on their representation in feeder pools (Drogin, 2013). In particular, women received 2,952 fewer promotions than would be expected into the Management Trainee position, a pre requisite for assuming salaried, management level jobs, despite having longer tenures and higher performance review ratings than male counterparts (See Appendix, Figure 7). The subjective nature for enrollment in the management trainee program serves as a persistent, structural impediment. With minimal oversight, store managers utilize a tap on the shoulder system and exercise extreme latitude in candidate selection for management trainee positions (Declaration Summaries, 2011). As a result, men averaged 2.9 years from date of hire until first being promoted to Assistant Manager and 8.6 years from hire until first being promoted to Store Manager, as compared to the 4.4 years and 10.1 years for women to be promoted to the same positions (Drogin, 2013). Chemical properties require a chemical change while physical properties don t need a chemical change to occur. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In Fig 1 the reactivity of Non Metals decreases every period and increases every group, the halogens lie on the end of the group of Non metals causing them to be highly reactive. The alkali metals have a single electron in their outer electron shell, making it easy for them to become a noble gas and period down the periodic table the easier it is to get rid of the extra electron, causing the alkali metals to become more reactive the further down the periods. To become a noble gas a halogen must gain an electron, the farther away the outer shell is from the nucleus, the more energy that is required for an electron to enter the shell. Halogens need one more electron to become a noble gas, while alkali metals need to donate an electron to become a noble gas. (Johnsonburg High School, n.d.) Fig 1. Toxicity Toxicity is how dangerous a substance is to an organism, it is commonly measured by the amount required to kill 50% of the population of a given organism. Almost 20 million animals are experimented on and killed annually worldwide, an estimated eight million of which are subjects in experiments involving pain while at least 10 percent of these animals do not receive painkillers (Andre Velasquez, 1988). Clearly these experimentations are reducing the quality of life for these animals, and as such there has been growing criticism of animal testing and the ethical questions that arise when studying these experiments. There is also a concern for the consequential threats to scientific and biomedical progress that they bring, however alternative testing methods have produced equally effective results therefore ending the debate over whether such experiments are necessary ( Animal experimentation , 2014). Overall, animal testing is unethical and must be stopped as it is immoral to inflict suffering on non consenting sentient beings and there are reasonable and successful alternatives available. Animals are conscious beings with desires, beliefs, and the ability to experience pain and pleasure. Their lives have inherent value and using them as simply a means towards our ends is unethical. • 42. An Overview Glass Of Glass Zakarian 1 Martin Zakarian Professor Kaner Chem 189 12 December 2015 An Overview of Glass One of the most used materials in human history is glass or more specifically silicate glass. Although some types of glasses are called crystal glass, glass is actually an amorphous solid and does not have a crystal structure. It is used in all walks of life ranging from homes to automobiles to laboratories. Historically, the one of the first types of glass that was used by humans to make tools and weapons was the volcanic glass known as obsidian. As for manmade glass, the earliest accounts date back to 5000 BC in the middle east. Primitive methods of glass making were used until about 100BC, when glassblowing was believed to be discovered. This discovery made glass products popular in the Roman Empire since the development of glassblowing allowed glass production to be more efficient and thus less expensive. As the centuries went on more techniques were developed which eventually lead to glass products being widespread. This paper will discuss some of the methods of glass production throughout history, the types of silicate glass, and the different ways that glass can be colored. One of the early methods of glass making was called core forming. This technique made use of a metal rod that had clay attached at one end. The end of the rod with the clay around it was either lowered into molten glass or the glass was poured onto the clay. The glass surrounding the clay would solidify ... • 43. The Importance Of Water In Water By John Steinbeck Water is also an essential part of Steinbeck s connection of setting to familial conflict, with the lack of water sowing seeds of discontent in both families, though Steinbeck s aforementioned theme of choice between good and evil defines what both families do with such misfortune. Lack of water on their property allows the Hamiltons to grow closer, with Samuel s disappointment with his lack of success in farming being outweighed by his joy in his children, Water would have made them comparatively rich...all in all it was a good firm grounded family....Samuel was well pleased with the fruit of his loins, (Steinbeck 507). By contrast, the drought of the land in Adam s family is representative of the lack of parenting, how Adam is completely devoid of emotion once Cathy leaves, Adam looked more gaunt than Samuel remembered. His eyes were dull, as though he did not use them much for seeing, (655). This juxtaposition is further emphasized by Samuel s biblical connection, as Samuel was a prophet, a man who could see into the future and thus see the value in raising children despite the difficulties while Adam cannot see beyond his own hardship. Furthermore, the lack of water enrichs the idea that if a family preserves through such difficulties, they will be greatly rewarded, And the Lord will continually guide you, and satisfy your desire in scorched places, and give strength to your bones, and you will be like a watered garden, and like a spring of water whose waters do not ...
