Meditations is a series of personal writings which embodies Marcus Aurelius s view on the Stoic
philosophy. The collection of writings consists of 12 books written over the course of his life in
which by reminding himself he reminds us to be human, to practice empathy, humility, kindness,
and to realize that time is short in this world.
Going through the text, we discover an emperor who was a simple man and who did not linger on
his royal status. Rather, he was a man of simplified tastes which shows him as being wise and
humble. The theme of the book is mainly focused on the nature of man and the universe. He argues
that everything came into existence from nature and when the things complete their destined time
they return back to nature. Marcus also focuses on the importance of having composure in one s
life. He believes that man should be strong and steadfast, and should strive to become better and
serene.

Vaccinations can be administered shortly after birth and are recommended into adulthood. The first
dose of the Hepatitis B (Hep B) vaccine is typically given shortly after birth but may be given at
one or two months of age. Hepatitis is a disease effecting the liver and can be life threatening. By
two months of age physicians recommend the second dose of Hep B along with the first dose of the
rotavirus, diphtheria, tetanus toxoids and pertussis (TDaP), hemophilus influenza type B (Hib),
pneumococcal conjugate vaccine and the inactivated poliovirus vaccine (IPV).
Rotavirus causes inflammation of the stomach and intestines; it effects infants and young children
often causing severe watery diarrhea, vomiting, fever, abdominal pain, and dehydration. Tetanus
toxoids (lock Jaw), pertussis (whooping cough), and diphtheria which is described as a thick
covering in the back of the throat, are all included in the TDaP vaccine. Diphtheria may lead to
breathing difficulties, paralysis, heart failure, and even death. The hemophilus influenza type B
vaccine which prevents meningitis (an infection of the covering of the brain and spinal cord),
pneumonia, and epiglottitis (a severe throat infection). Pneumococcal vaccine protects against
streptococcus pneumoniae bacteria which can cause severe ear infections and meningitis.

What do words actually mean? When we are reading, many of us don t actually stop to think
about the meaning of each word (unless the word is unfamiliar), instead we just assume what it
means we read automatically. Looking at the poem, To A Poor Old Woman by William Carlos
Williams, we see the Shklovsky s concept of defamiliarization in use. When we look at Shklovsky
s concept, The technique of art is to make objects unfamiliar to make forms difficult, to increase
the difficulty and length of perception because the process of perception is an aesthetic end in
itself and must be prolonged (Rivkin and Ryan 9). Using this same concept, looking at the first
stanzaof To a Poor Old Woman, we see the way that the stanza was structured in a way to make it
unfamiliar. The author splits the sentences up where they normally wouldn t be split up, so that
gives that sense of unfamiliarity, so we begin to questionwhat the words actually mean. If a person
attempts to read it as a normal sentence, we would see that someone is eating a plum, the street is
a paper bag, and something is in her hand. The reason I believe the lines are broken up in a weird
way is because it s trying to give that sense of unfamiliarity to get an audience to focus on what
this stanza is really trying to say. Looking at the second stance, we see the repetition of They taste
good to her written in different forms. This repetition gives an unfamiliar sense because each time
it repeats, it gives off
