Characters with mental illness are
portrayed as…
#Movies4MentalHealth
● “Wrong”
● “Different”
● As outcasts in society
● Irrational
● Needing to be fixed with specific therapy or options that may not be
helpful
● Bad
● Pitied
● Funny, odd, problematic
● Insane or horrifying
● Dangerous
● Emotional
● Needy
● In Necessary Roughness, they do a good job of portraying people with
mental health problems as regular people that’s going through
something that prevents them from doing their job

MH ACROSS CULTURES
● Shameful, all in your head
● Therapy, being fixed
● It’s kept quiet
● In the Black community, mental health problems are shot down as being
“not real” or hushed
● I was told a lot to just pray it away
● Often told it was a demon instead of an actual issue I was dealing with
● Mental health, what is that? Have a beer
● It’s not something you talk about and if you do then you’re told you’re
either “normal” or there’s “something wrong” with you
Across different cultures and languages, people talk about
and explore mental health in multiple ways. In just a few
words, please share: How have you experienced the concept
of "mental health" within your own cultural communities?

How does stigma feel?
#Movies4MentalHealth
● Lonely
● Alienated
● It’s a label that feels like it can’t be removed. It feels like a part of
your identity
● Like you are a burden or not taken seriously
● Isolated by a barrier
● On an island by myself
● Like I’m broken and I need to be fixed
● Shut out
● I interpreted the character in the film as feeling disconnected from
reality
● In a whirlpool
● Misunderstood and a downer to anyone you open up to

What makes it difficult to reach out
for help?
#Movies4MentalHealth
● Judgement
● Disapproval from others. Fear of losing out on opportunities
● Financial burden
● That just proves you’re broken
● Lack of understanding
● Judgement
● Emotions
● Fear that you can’t be “fixed”
● The label itself
● Not wanting to burden others
● Fear of coming off as weak
● Having a negative past experience when reaching out for help
● You are trying to keep it secret

What did you think? How did you feel?
#Movies4MentalHealth
● Heaviness
● Emptiness
● Introspective
● It made me sad and I felt heavier overall
● Having to prove myself with no motivation
● Feelings of hopelessness
● Motionless
● Ungenuine representation
● Empathy
● I forget the exact line but it was something to do with wanting to conform
to the perfect silhouette. That hit me. I think that people view eating
disorders as a lifestyle choice and something that is within that person's
control and that creates stigma.
● It reminded me in high school about how girls referred to other girls with
eating disorders as "lucky" because they were usually skinny

What are some practices that help
support your wellness?
#Movies4MentalHealth
● Calling my mom!
● Meditation, breathing, healthy exercise, work breaks, sleep, walks
● I make sure to debrief with other people if I encounter a difficult situation
or if I’m experiencing heavy emotions
● I started writing poetry
● Song writing
● Self pep-talks
● I think sometimes certain practices are connotated as better which can
put pressure on people to do certain things that may not work for them
● Calling my friends, playing with a stressball that smells like lavender or
reading
● Painting
● Saying things I’m grateful for
● Listening to music

What did you think? How did you feel?
#Movies4MentalHealth
● Felt it in my chest, it hit home
● Excitement
● Happy tears at the end
● The hug!!!
● Feeling alone even though you’re surrounded by other people and
the bustling activity of life
● I thought the loss of purpose and going through the motions was a
normal thing

How can we support ourselves and
others?
#Movies4MentalHealth
● Accept other people’s values even if they are different from yours
● Don’t keep things bottled up
● Checking in with people from time to time
● Empathy, being there to listen, but making sure that if and when
you’re listening to someone it doesn’t negatively affect your mental
health
● Be there to listen to others
● Making sure to check in on others more often
● Checking in on myself more often
● Listen and motivate them
● Checking in on the people you rely on, because they need help from
time to time too. I’ve noticed the people I have viewed as
superheroes in my life struggle too
●
