MH ACROSS CULTURES
Across different cultures and languages, people talk about and explore
mental health in multiple ways.
In just a few words, please share:
How have you experienced the concept of "mental health" within your own
cultural communities?
● Not talked about much as in more "mental health" doesn't exist
● Not seen as an illness but as a deficiency
● pill shaming
● They focus on the disability rather than the rest of the person.
● it was seen in the sense that everyone went through trauma,
but they didn’t call it that
● Hero worship

● the waves analogy in the film resonated with me
● Wearing a mask
● Makes you feel alone
● Lost in the ocean
● frustration/annoyance
22. #Movies4MentalHealth
What makes it difficult to
reach out for help?
#Movies4MentalHealth
● Not wanting to "bother" people
● Figuring out who is safe, understanding
● Not wanting to be a disappointment to others
● Men are almost seen as if we do not have
emotions and just have to man up in difficult
scenarios.
● For his mother, the main character feels that he
would get lectures rather that advice.

27. #Movies4MentalHealth
What are some practices that help
support your wellness?
#Movies4MentalHealth
● Saying "no" at times. I feel like I say "yes" to make

What did you think?
How did you feel?
#Movies4MentalHealth
● felt in my chest, breath
● Each story is powerful
● I find it interesting to read that she uses words like
"YOU" when she's explaining and telling her narrative.
Story telling is awkward to read.
● heartbeak
● In my chest, a warmness
● really appreciative to see another queer asian person
● i felt glad that she was able to expand overall. i like how
she copes with by showing it through her films
33. #Movies4MentalHealth
How can we support ourselves
and others?
#Movies4MentalHealth
● We can uplift eachother by cheacking up on eachother
because to me the little things count and make me feel
cared for so it makes me feel less anxious because it shows
someone cares
● Sharing stories is really important and impactful
● This is an excellent approach to reach those of us at
CSUDH that are not able to interact with others, especially
at this time that it makes it difficult to get around. I see the
potential of creating a non-profit festival for films of this
genre. Time has come.
