MH ACROSS CULTURES
● Stigmatized
● Seen as taboo
● Don’t talk about it
● Suck it up
● My mother is a therapist so it was very open and accepted
● Seen as a sign of weakness
● Parents don’t exactly understand and they think it’s an
excuse
Across different cultures and languages, people talk about
and explore mental health in multiple ways. In just a few
words, please share: How have you experienced the concept
of "mental health" within your own cultural communities?

What did you think? How did you feel?
#Movies4MentalHealth
● Especially after international women’s day yesterday when so many people excluded
trans folk from their feminism, this made me think about how yesterday must have
affected trans folk’s mental illness.
● It was heavy
● Definitely heavy, very real
● I felt the cinematography drew us in, it was foreboding
● Feeling grateful to learn about their stories
● What stood out to me what when one of the people in the film said that people don't
take him seriously when he uses he/him pronouns because he doesn’t try to look
"masculine"
● I felt empathetic

What did you think? How did you feel?
#Movies4MentalHealth
● Felt it in my chest and heart
● I felt encouraged at the end
● Heaviness in my body
● Definitely hopeful at the end, could feel the build up
● Sadness
● Her crying face in that close-up was very powerful
● I appreciated that the friend normalized the experience of
having depression for her and reachingo ut to help her get
support
● I think when yuo’re in it it’s hard to know that you are not
alone. I also appreciated the friend.
● As a therapist, I love the encouraging depiction of getting
help but also feel pulled to hold that some folks don’t have
great experiences/can be harmed by seeking help, too!

How can we support ourselves and
others?
#Movies4MentalHealth
● Listen without trying to solve everything
● Educating ourselves and community and being aware that
every mental health experience is not the same.
● Active listening
● Checking in on friends and family and offering to hold space
for them
● Recognize that sometimes feeling okay and being okay may
be different. Expressing ourselves, even if you don’t know the
solution.
● Being a listener if you can, try to express yourself so that
others can understand.
