1) Calcium levels in the blood and interstitial fluid are regulated by parathyroid hormone (PTH) which is secreted by the parathyroid glands in response to calcium levels. 2) PTH acts to increase blood calcium levels by promoting bone resorption, decreasing calcium excretion by the kidneys, and increasing calcium absorption in the intestines. 3) PTH also acts to decrease blood phosphate levels by blocking its reabsorption in the kidneys and increasing its excretion in urine.
