Somatoform and dissociative disorders involve physical symptoms that cannot be fully explained by medical conditions. Treatment focuses on limiting attention and reinforcement of symptoms, as well as addressing any underlying psychiatric issues. Conversion disorder involves psychological stress converting into physical symptoms like paralysis or seizures. Symptoms often resolve spontaneously with supportive therapy.

- – pain in 4 different sites or associated with different functions (e.g., back, head, joints, during sexual intercourse) 2 gastro symptoms other than pain (e.g., nausea, bloating, vomiting, intolerance of several different foods) 1 sexual symptom (e.g., sexual indifferences, excessive menstrual bleeding, vomiting throughout pregnancy) 1 pseudoneurological symptom (e.g., conversion symptoms, paralysis or localized weakness, loss of touch or pain sensation, blindness, dissociative symptoms)
- This involves the use of a gatekeeper physician – like a primary care physician – who is assigned to screen all complaints and prevent the person from going to multiple doctors at the same time for the same complaints. The patient is also given training in relating to others without using physical complaints (e.g., talking to loved ones without bringing up physical complaints).
