This document summarizes the processes used to create various assets for a game project, including a game case design, character sprites, menu icons, merchandise designs, and a demo animation. For each asset, the creator describes the steps taken and notes areas that could be improved if more time was available, such as adding more unique details to character sprites or smoothing transitions in the animation.

Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

2. Process-Game case design I created this by starting off with a generic
blank ps4 case jpeg and then put a black
background in the space where the cover
would be by using the shape tool. Then I
got an image of a tree of life symbol by
adding a blue and white glow. I notist that
the edging was blurred so I used the
sharpen tool to make it sharper and more
bold. This gave it an almost 3d effect
when I used the tool. Then finally I used a
font known as metropolitan. Given more
time I would of maybe created my own
symbol for the tree using my graphics
tablet but unfortunately I need to replace
the pen for it. I would also experiment
with a better colour for the titles as it
seems like the blue and lavender don’t
seem to work with each other as the
colours are make the image to bright.
3. Process- character sprites
I created these designs by first using a
50x50 pixel page on photoshop and using
a pencil to do a basic outline of a 8bit
human with the pencil tool. Then I started
to use different design for each character
for instance I used different shades of grey
for the fighter and I used white, purple,
gold and blue for the cleric. The one I feel
that needs improvement is the wizard as
he doesn’t look unique enough to be its
own character and it looks like its wearing
a similar cloak to micky mouse in Walt
Disney's Fantasia. If I had more time I
would make him look different and more
unique so its doesn’t look like its
borderline copyright infringement.
4. Process-Menu icons
I created these by using the pencil toll to make
simple shapes for each I con then I added detail
with different shades of colours for instance I used
2 extra layers for my map logo as I had to do an
ocean part with different watery colours and then
on the next layer different shades and tones of
green. I feel the one I made the most effort on was
the map icon as it has the most detail for a
pixelated image. The only icon I don’t really like is
the settings icon as the spanner looks more like a
cattle prod and the screwdriver looks like a chisel I
feel if I had more time and better knowledge of
how to make curved shapes with pixels they might
have looked better and like what there meant to
be
5. Process-merch
I created these shirts by placing this same art I
used for the game case on to the shirts. As I
stated before the bright colours do clash but
that only really depends on which colour the
back ground as they work better for the blue
and white shirts over the red and black.
6. Process- demo animation
I started of creating the first frame by
using assets from the rpg maker app I had
on my pc to create the overworld map.
The path took me a while t male as they
were tiny squares that I had to
individually piece together like a jigsaw.
The one major thing that needed to be I
improved was to reduce the blurring on
the houses with the sharpen tool as at
the time of making this I didn’t think to
use it.
7. Process- demo animation
The transition screen from over world to
battle screen was done with black
rectangle shapes using the shape tool. I
only used 4 rectangles to shorten the
animation time. The text box for the battle
screen was done similarly with a curved
edge rectangle one on top of the other
then I used the line tool to separate each
section for of the box. If I had more time I
might have made my animation longer that
6 seconds. I would also try u use a walking
animation rather than a static image for the
characters in the overworld. I may also
reduce the background music as it is a few
decibels high and may deafen the
player/viewer.
