Tasks For Adventure Project
An Existing Product – to begin with I had to pick a film(I picked Moana) and fill in theequilibriumcyclefor the
story line. I found the problems Moana faced in the movie and started the cyclefrom there to fill therest in. I
found this easy as Moana is a simpler story linewith many equilibriums.I then had to say which characters are
which character types in Moana. To do this I picked a character and decided what character type they are
instead of going through the character types as itmade this task simpler. The final partof this task was to fill in
WWWWWH. This was a simpletask as I know Moana well and can remember the story line.
Initial Ideas – for this section I had to come up with 3 filmideas and fill in WWWWWH.I started off by thinking
of a simplestory lineand then addingto each section instead of tryingto think of itall atonce. I came up with
3 ideas and then had to choosethe one I wanted to use. After choosingthe one I wanted to use, I created a
mind map for the story linewhich helped me think about all the smaller details which I could link into my
products.Thinkingabout my products I am goingto make; I made a mind map on each one to come up with
possibleideas and howthey will all link together. The final step of this section is to create a mood board for
inspiration of the filmidea and the products.
Research – for this section I had to research some existingproducts and evaluate them to help me with my
products.I found one magazinecover, one game and soundtrack, and two movies with three filmposter each.
I thought about how they have been made and why each aspect has been added. This helped me to come up
with more ideas and aspects to use in my products and smaller things to link my products together to make a
higher quality package.
Planning – the next stage was planningwhich is themost helpful section as you can see how your ideas work.
The firsttask was to make a stylesheet which helped me to see how all my ideas aregoing to look. I added
colours and pictures thatI want my work to look likewhich helped me to see what aspects to use. To support
the colour schemes, I created the trail idea in all thecolours so I could see how the colour combinations will
work. Doingthis helped as I could make any combination of three colours which areeasier to see and imagine.
The next part to the planningwas to create layouts for a magazinecover, different advertisements and a
videogame. I started with the magazinecover and different advertisements as they will havesimilar themes
and aspects.I decided to draw the layouts which made this easier as I could do whatever I want instead of
findingpictures. To support the layouts,I made another slideaboutclothes, locations and fonts which I
needed to think about as they are the smaller detailsthatcould be left out. Next, I drew my videogame layout
which helped me a lot as I could see my idea in front of me instead of tryingto pictureit, which meant I could
see what to change when I designed iton the Photoshop. Next, I had to plan a scriptfor my cut scene which
helped me to see which section of my plan of the cut scene can be used and how itcan link to the rest of the
game. The next part was planningwhatmusic and sound effects are need for my videogame. Doing this meant
I had thought about how the soundtrack can complement the game, how my game will function and what
aspects of the game needs a certain sound made. The next thing I had to plan was the actors and locations
which was easy for me as I have made my products simpler so I am the only actor, and I can take the pictures
at home. The final partto the planningsection was the contingency plan and the risk assessments which
helped me to know what could go wrong and how I can prevent it.
Videogame Demo Level – to begin with I had to think about what was going to happen in my demo level so I
could plan the rest. I had a few options which were to create small sectionsof each street, to have the
character run for 20 seconds or for the character to fall down a hole and the game is over. I decided to go for
the ‘game over’ idea so I could showhow it restarts the game as it is an endless runner game so there arenot
separatelevels.Once I had decided this,I knew I had to create three streets where the character died on the
3rd street, so I only needed to design 2.1 streets. I worked out how many frames and then pixels where needed
for one second of animation then how many for 20 seconds of animation and worked out how many pixels are
need for each street compared to the time. Doingthis helped as I know that the page is longenough for what I
am wanting to do without stretchingthe whole pictureand I can work out how many pixels will beused for
each street. Overall,I will havearound 300 frames for the background as the lastsection will bethe game over
screen. Once I had my page, I decided on a gradient background and then had to think about the scalefor the
character compared to the buildings to make it look as realistic aspossible. I decided to use 10-20 pixels for my
character as I am not sure how many I will need to create it. Next, I create one separatelayers for the front
buildings and for the back buildings which helped so I could draw over the front buildings, butitwould not
show up as the layer is behind makingless problems with creating the look with buildings behind and in front.
After the layers were sorted, I used dark grey for the front buildingsand lightgrey for the back buildings for
the 1st street to be able to see the comparison which also makes itmore realisticas thelightwould be
different further away from the focus point. I have also thought for each street I can change the colours of the
buildings and theaccent colours to create a strong contrastbetween the streets. As shown further in my
production log, you can see that I have used a simpledesign for a more minimal look as I did not want to over
complicateitand for me to run out of time. I can then control the colours easier and add the accentcolours
which stand out more for each street. Carryingon from the firststreet, I created the second street which is 200
pixels longer than the firststreet, so the streets get longer the further you are into the game. I also created the
first350 pixels for the third street as that is when the character will fall and the game will end,so I can show
the game over page. To help keep a uniform look in the buildings,I used guides to keep the floors and doors at
the same height so when the background is moving, there is not any bigmovements to distractthe player.
After finishingthebuildings,I changed the colour of the background usingthe gradienttool and isolatingthe
layers,I then changed the colours of the buildings usingthebucket tool, to go with the new background and to
create a late-nightlook I added stars in the sky. The final section of my background is addingthe signs on top
the buildings which I used a pairingof colours in an analogous colourscheme. Once I had added the colours to
the signs,I was ableto translateEnglish words into Japanese and copy them for my signs which helps make the
streets more realistic for beingin Tokyo. I then designed some trophies but thought I should add these to the
animation so they can disappear which worked out better for the game and the final look.I then merged all
the layers together and transferred it to the small document and usingthe tween tool, I was ableto add 300
frames between the startof the background and the end of the background. The next sta ge was designingthe
character and makingall the sequences for the walking, jumpingand fallingprocess of the game which was
done by makinglots of layers and hidingthe layers I did not want on for that frame. For my firsttry, the
character looked likethey were walking,so I changed that to make the character run. I also had to add to the
background to make the ending flowbetter as the character fallsinto the hole. To pull the game together, I
added animation - a countdown at the start and collectingthe trophies at the end of the streets. The final part
to my videogame was to make the game over screen which appears when the player dies.I have shown in my
production logthe development of the design as I changed littlebits so the final design fits with the game. To
help keep the theme in the game, I used the neon colours and went for a minimal design inspired by Jumanji
from my research in my Pro Forma PowerPoint.
Videogame Menu Screen – for this section I need to find some inspiration for the design as I have not created
one before. I then decided on the colours and fonts etc. I then designed my menu screen and thought itwas a
bit empty, so I added the walkinganimationsto the sidewhich links to a print idea I have as the characters are
laid outthe same way.
Videogame Cut Scene – to begin this section I had to think about how this will work with the rest of my game.
I wanted this section to link the menu screen to the beginningof the game. I decided to show what the
objective of the game is,what the controls areand then slidethe game on to the screen for the play
subheading. This then links all thesections together.
Videogame Sequence – To put all the pieces together, I used Premiere Pro to edit them in the order I wanted. I
will then add music, sound effects and a narrator to the cut scene.
Videogame Soundtrack and effects – to startwith I have recorded the narrator and added a voice effect to go
with the retro deign of the game. I have then cut and arranged the correctaudio to go with the correct section
of the sequence. The next step was usingBeepbox for the theme tune, soundtrack and the sound effects. I
then exported them and arranged them in Premiere Pro with a bit of editing.
What I Have Changed for My Video Game Sequence – to break up the game I have added two power ups
which reduce the game by 15 seconds.I have also added more frames for the subheadingsections makingit
easier for the player to read.
Synopsis – for this section I found the websites given for learninghowto write a synopsisas itwas my first
time. These really helped as I could pick the best information from them all and they also had examples and
videos.I created a basic synopsisand then asked for feedback which I was told I needed to add to the story to
create a full film.To do this I added another thing that went wrong in the game to create tension. Overall,I am
very happy with my synopsisas I have used small details to showit is a synopsisfor a filme.g., all caps for
names.
Magazine Cover – I have taken a close-up pictureof myself with a blue tint to go with my dark blue
background.I have then used the Magnetic Lasso Tool to cut around my head and shoulders to get rid of my
room in the background.I have then added this to my magazinecover document and arranged it to siton the
left-hand sideshowingonly half my face. After addingthe neon trail and sometext, I needed to swap the face
to be on the other side,so the text is on the left. I then added the text and images with different effects and
colours to fit in my theme for the prints in the package. For my firstdraft, there was too much squashed up
with too many aspects. My second draftwas spaced out more, but I decided to change the name of the filmso
for my final design,I had swapped some text around. The only thing I changed after this was the background
as I added a gradient overlay.Once I had finished my magazine cover, I put iton a mockup magazine.
Film Poster – I have taken pictures to cut around them for my poster and then I can arrangethem in the
formation wanted. I have used 3 outfits, so each character looks differenteven though I am all of them. I have
edited the pictures in Lightroom and then transferred to Photoshop so I could cut around the body to remove
the background. I then added them onto my poster and sized them to be realistic.I added a gradient
background to match my magazinecover. After this I added the text and experimented with different colours.
Once I had all this sorted,I put the poster on some mockup products.
Bus Advert – I have taken pictures to cut around them for my bus advert and then I can arrangethem in the
formation wanted. I have used 3 outfits, so each character looks differenteven though I am all of them. I then
cut around them in photoshop and added the trails.I copied the background and text from my poster so I
could keep the theme throughout the package. I resized and moved everything to be in the correct layoutand
scaleto make it realistic.I then added the bus advert on to a mockup bus.
Billboard – The billboard was simpler as I had already created the aspects as I kept the theme in all the
products.I copied all the aspects from the bus advert and resized them to fiton the billboard.I then arranged
them to work with the page and to work with the other products. My final step was putting them on a mockup
billboard and a lorry.
What I have Changed About My Prints – I have changed a few things on my prints to make them a high
standard. For all my prints,I have changed the background to a gradientto break itup as the solid colour did
not have an effect on the product. I also added drop shadows to all theactors to help create depth with a flat
background. For my poster, I changed the sizeof the middle actor to help create depth with overlappingthe
other actors. As the middleactor was bigger, I made the hand be above the title and the foot behind the title
to help extend the depth of the actors. The final thingI changed was havingthree actor’s names rather than
five as itgave more spaceat the top. I wanted to have an odd number of names becauseodd numbers of
things work better than even numbers.
Merchandise – I have started off my creatinga logo for my production company which I called Red Dinosaur
Studios, but I have also tried 5 other names with different designs to show the process.I have then had to
recreate this in Photoshop as Wix Logo Maker is not free when you finish a logo.I also created merch designs
for Neon Dash and contact details for the company. I then used these images to put them on t-shirts,mugs,
business cardsand workspaces.
Videogame 2 Background – to start my second game, I needed to create a background,so I started by usinga
gradient overlay with the bluefrom my firstgame. I then added platforms in the green from my firstgame as I
wanted to keep the colour combinations thesame as they work the best. I added platforms every 60 pixels as
it gave enough room for the character.I then added a black box at the bottom with NEON FALL which is the
finishingplatform.I wanted to add the title to link back to the menu screen. To keep the theme the same
through the levels,I copied the background but changed the colours to pink and purplefor level two and red
and orange for level three. My final aspectwas creatinga level sign atthe top in the background colour to
make itlink to the bottom of the level.
Videogame 2 Demo Levels – firstI had to create the character so firstwas the male character, second was the
female character and third was the alien.I also created different layers for the arms and legs to go with the
rightand left body layer.I then selected the layers needed depending on the part of the level and if the
character is moving. To create the fallinglook,I moved the background 10 pixels per frame to keep the
background moving at a constant pace. My final aspectwas addingcoins to the level for extra points if
collected. To restart the level if the player dies, I duplicated the frames savetime from redoingit all.My final
section to the levels were creatinga level completed page and then a new character unlocked page which
were done with the background colour to keep the link between the levels.
Videogame 2 Menu Screen – I used the menu screen from my firstgame as I wanted to link them together,
however I changed DASH to FALL. I also removed the runningcharacters fromthe sides to create a simpler
page as there are more characters in this game. To link the menu screen to the game, I added the gradient
background with the blue from the prints which links thegames to the prints.
Videogame 2 Cutscene – to create my cutscene, I used level one and animated what was said in my scriptsuch
as addingpointsigns, only showingone coin collection, showingthe arrows to control and the new character
page when a level is completed.
Videogame 2 Soundtrack and effects – once all theabove aspects were added and edited in premiere pro, I
was ableto add sound to the game. I used the soundtrack and theme song from my firstgame which saved
time but linked the games together even more. I then used Google translateand snapchatfilters to create the
narrator for the cutscene, I used this for NEON DASH too which links the games again.I then went to Beepbox
and experimented with randominstruments to create five sound effects such as collectinga coin.I then added
these to Premiere Pro and edited the audio gain and added some fadingfor the final touches.
