Porifera are commonly known as sponges. They are the simplest multicellular animals and were some of the earliest animals to evolve, with fossil records dating back to the Precambrian era. There are over 5000 living sponge species classified in the phylum Porifera, which contains three main groups. Sponges have a porous structure with water flowing through chambers and pores, and lack specialized tissues and organs. They feed by trapping particles from water filtered through their bodies using collar cells.
