Rhetorical Analysis of a The New York Times Article Essay
The article titled The man with the snow job appears in the Opinion Pages, The New York Times.
Author, Gail Collins, opens her article with the question: Who is to blame for this weather? which
hooks readers attention and makes them curious about what they are going to read. In her writing,
Collins talks about the current snowstorm in the United States and how it is used for everyone s
advantage. She also points out how government officials such as Arnold Schwarzenegger, Al Gore,
George W. Bush, and Barack Obama use the occasion of snowfall for their own purposes. The author
borrows images of global warming effects to discuss some controversial problems in the society these
days. She applies the following elements to establish the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The expression is frequently applied to people who abuse their authority to avoid criticism or to
deflect guilt or mistake. Therefore, I understand that the man with the snow job here implies a group
of government official. The following metaphor is made when she introduces the email sent from
Rahm Emanuel who is in the race for Chicago mayor. The author says that Rahm wasted no time in
sending off a storm related e mail, offering a few helpful tips on how to weather the weather.
(Collins). Rahm Emanuel is giving some snowstorm survival tips that every citizen already knows. Is
it difficult for Chicagoans to survive a snowstorm without Rahm s leadership?
Another metaphor is made when she says: We are sick of bad weather and looking for a dumping
place for all our bad vibrations (Collins). In this case, bad weather does not literally mean climate
change. It implies the bad political and economical situations that people have been undergoing
recently such as pension problem, political corruption, and global warming. A dumping place can be
considered as a specific person who we can blame to.
To support for the sarcastic tone, Collins additionally makes a sophisticated simile: We would like to
blame one specific person like the evil queen in the movie Red Sonja who used a magic orb to destroy
entire civilizations with terrible storms until she was vanquished by Red Sonja and Arnold
Schwarzenegger. (Collins). Arnold Schwarzenegger, the 38th

The Pros And Cons Of Brown V Board Of Education
The Brown V Board of Education case overturned provisions of the Plessy v Ferguson decision of
1896 which allowed separate but equal in all public areas including public schools. This case began a
spark in the American Civil Rights Movement by demanding public facilities to allow African
Americans the same privileges as whites. This case ended tolerance of racial segregation, however, the
decision did not succeed in fully desegregating public education, but it definitely started a revolution.
In addition to separate but equal, most facilities ignored the requirement, including most school
districts which neglected their all black schools. In the early 1950s, NAACP lawyers brought class
action lawsuits on behalf of black school students in multiple states including Virginia, Delaware,
Kansas and South Carolina, seeking court orders to demand school districts to let black students attend
white public schools. One of these class actions, Brown V Board of Education was filed against the
Topeka Kansas school board by a man by the name of Oliver Brown, a parent of one of the students
that was denied access to Topeka s white schools. Oliver Brown claimed that Topeka s racial
segregation violated the constitution s Equal Protection Clause which says no state shall make or
enforce any law which shall deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws
, this amendment did not include prohibiting integration. The federal district court dismissed his claim
and ruled that segregation in public schools were substantially equal enough . The court negotiated
and in the end decided that even if the facilities were equal between white and black schools, racial
segregation in schools is inherently unequal , meaning it had been unconstitutional. The court later
demanded the states to integrate their schools immediately. Brown v. Board of Education case had a
major impact on not only the Civil Rights Movement but society as a whole. As we all know,
segregation between black and whites has gone on forever. Generations continued to teach their
children and explain to them that it was normal, up until these landmark cases began did it become
known that it isn t right to treat others differently based on

Malcolm Gladwell The Art Of Failure
In The Art of Failure, Gladwell analyzes the two different ways someone can underperform when
faced with high stress levels. The two forms are choking and panicking, both of which are huge
detriments to high stake tasks. Malcolm writes that in order to overcome these challenges, one must
first understand which form they are dealing with. Panicking and choking as defined by Gladwell can
be characterized by the root of the obstacle, the resulting inability, and the form of compensation with
which a person will be inclined to react. To begin, panicking and choking can be differentiated by the
factor which they are caused. While both occur in high stress environments, these types of failure do
not result from the same internal conflict. Panic

The Witch Hunt Of The Salem Witch Trials
Imagine, if you will, having to spend 25 years in prison for a crime that you didn t commit. It may
seem absurd and ridiculous, but it has happened before. Meet Dan and Fran Keller, a couple that ran a
daycare that was accused of exposing children to satanism in many different ways. This was all
because of a witch hunt in the 1980 s and 1990 s surrounded around accusing people of different acts
of satanism.A witch hunt is when many innocent people are wrongly accused of crimes they didn t
commit, mainly with little, uncredible, or no evidence to back it up. The term witch hunt was derived
from the Salem witch trials in which hundreds of people were accused and hanged for witchcraft.

This case began with couple Mr. and Mrs. Keller opening up a daycare in Austin Texas that was
overwhelmingly positive and filled with fun activities for the kids that may attend. All of this came to
a halt though, when one day a three year old girl who was already seeing a therapist for mental issues
told her mother that Mr. Keller had assaulted her when she was at the daycare.
In the summer of 1991, the accusation of the Kellers was made by a three year old and her mother.
The three year old girl came home one day and told her mother she was spanked by Mr. Keller while
at daycare. After hearing this, the mother and the girl s therapist repeatedly questioned her retaining
what else may have happened when she was at daycare. As Jordan Smith wrote in an article for The
Intercept, By the time the Kellers were tried, three children (whose parents were, at least for a time, all
regularly communicating about the Kellers) had described a shocking panoply of sadistic abuse,
(Smith 1). From here the accusations started to lose any kind of basis and went to the furthest possible
extremes. Some of these accusations included forcing the children to drink blood laced Kool Aid,
throwing children and sharks in the swimming pool they had at the daycare, and cutting out the heart
of a baby. Some of the more wild accusations were holding a gun to a child s head and forcing him to
assault his infant sister while

The Effects Of National Pride On Our Society
National pride often can be beneficial to our society; in fact, numerous citizens in every country take
pride of their country, ethnicity, culture, religion, and even sometimes their current status of wealth.
Therefore, having patriotic ideas and feelings are not terrible; actually, it gives us as citizens an image
and it defines us for who we are. Nevertheless, there are problems in every major part of our society
that ends up taking an advantage of pride against other ethnic groups. In other words, judging and
comparing others through stereotypes leads to the extreme tendencies to passively become racist. We
see it in TVs, movies, music, social media, in our political environment, and in our daily lives. Thus,
we agree and realize that racism still exists today; due to our naïve behaviors, poor perspectives, and
opinions that we easily judge our diversity. In fact, I would admit myself that I was racist towards
Americans without knowing until an encounter with an American ESL (English as a Second
Language) teacher that enlightened me and changed my perspective towards the American people.
Before I met my teacher in America, it all started when I was an elementary student in South Korea
apparently learning English for the first time. In the beginning, I was convinced from many adults
who advises me that to be successful in my future career, English must be mastered, for it is a global,
valuable and useful language. However, with dear honesty, English for me was a foreign

Tim Burton Mood Analysis
How Tim Burton uses techniques to help set the mood.
There is a misconception that directing is easy and simple. Tim Burton uses cinematic techniques in
his movies to set a specific a atmosphere and mood. Mood can make or break an entire story if a story
is meant to be all happy and cheery and they make the mood is not there to compliment it ruins the
story, and how Tim Burton set up the moods of his movies always complimented the story. Tim
Burton Gives his films a dark and eerie feel by using the cinematic techniques sound, editing, and
lighting.
Sound is a very important part of a movie as it can set the mood in the situation; Tim Burton used
diegetic sounds perfectly in Charlie in the Chocolate Factory to set that dark eerie mood. At the
beginning of the movie where you see all the machines that are used to make chocolate, a the
machines are working it is playing a low pitched song while the viewer hears the machines press down
on the chocolate to mold the chocolate. The sounds the machines make combined with the music
makes the scene s mood a lot less more cheery like yeah chocolate but also gave an mysterious feel
about it. Another example is when the group is greeted by wax puppets singing an upbeat song, ...

Most of the scenes in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory Wonka is seen in most scenes with full
lighting, but when he has his flashbacks the lighting shows half his face. The camera angle also allows
for the full effect by portraying his face from a lower vantage point. It gives an eerie feeling around
Wonka and his mysterious background. The lighting in The Nightmare Before Christmas is dark and
shadowy, meant to feel like a real nightmare. In the beginning in the Charlie and the Chocolate
Factory, after Willy opens the first door that lead to almost a land with no dark, everything is edible

The Journal Of Antonio Pigafetta
Introduction The more you know about the past, the better prepared you are for the future. This is a
quote by Theodore Roosevelt that speaks about a certain truth about History, the past. People tend to
think that history is of no importance, but what they don t know is that the past plays a certain role in
shaping the present and the future. When I was assigned to write a paper about the Philippine s history
during the Spanish colonization, I was determined to find a topic that greatly influenced and affected
the history of the world. A suggestion was given to me that I should write about the significant journal
entries of Antonio Pigafetta about Magellan s journey. I found this topic immensely interesting and I
decided to write about it though it seemed to be a difficult subject. ... Show more content on

tendency to receive something without being thankful for it. While we learn so much from the
writings of Antonio Pigafetta and learn from it, I think that we are not as grateful for them as we
should be. My term paper is about five significant journal entries of Antonio Pigafetta. I hope that by
the end of this paper, we would not only learn more about Magellan s journey, but I truly hope that we

Critical Theories Of Criminology
Introduction
In this paper, I will discuss conflict criminology, radical criminology, peacemaking criminology, and
postmodern criminology providing a comparison as well as a contrast to each.
Discussion
There are several theories developing critical theories of criminology, the first discussed in this paper
will be conflict theory (Bohm Vogel, 2011). The conflict theory is the inequality of competing groups,
moreover, the different social statuses of individuals. This theory compares the differences in white
collar crime to the crime of the blue collar class. White collar crime is mostly money related crimes,
including embezzlement, committed by the economically elite, conversely, blue collar crime is
considered more violent as well ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The structure of this societal hierarchy places a few individuals in the higher ranks of society with the
majority within the lower ranks, the proverbial winners as compared to the losers. This theory bases
crime upon the various class struggles to obtain wealth within an unequal economic environment. The
lower class struggles to obtain the same level of material wealth held by those of the higher classes
creating an extremely competitive environment leading to individuals taking advantage of the weaker
members of society to further their own level of wealth. The radical theory defines crime as the
deprivation of basic human rights, as individuals compete for a portion of societal wealth in an
unequally distributed market they become overly competitive with one another leading to what is
described as senseless violence.
The third theory discussed in this paper is the peacemaking criminology, this theory is a non violent
approach to change society through the transformations beginning at the individual level (Bohm
Vogel, 2011). The theorist of peacemaking view suffering as the cause of crime, expressing the need
for a change within society to become for aware of the needs of those less fortunate, moreover,
working together to resolve those issues. This theory views the acts of punishing individuals for
crimes committed as the source for continued criminal acts. A shift from

Charles Williams On Bullying Summary
When someone is done wrong they usually seek vengeance. Studies have shown that a victim of
bullying lashes out not only on the bully but on the peers that laughed along or did nothing to help the
victim. Charles Andrew Williams, who killed two students and wounded thirteen more during a 2001
shooting spree at Santana High School in Santee, California, said afterward that he was tired of being
bullied by other students. Many victim s hold in their heart or pain until it explodes into violence. This

bullying is not a game and that anyone who is being bullied should come to an adult to let them know
when they are being bullied. Also he addresses the bully and how it is not always good to be a bully.
Psychologist s studies make sense of bullying UCLA Newsroom | May 03, 2012 The article discusses
how we put too much stereotype into our view of a bully. We usually make the bully out to be this

this is all a myth. The bully is usually happy coming from a good home and has very high self esteem.
That we should stop looking at the bully as this helpless little boy/guy and start looking at the bully as

Cosquer Cave
In 1985 a professional Scuba diver named Henri Cosquer discovered the cave. Cosquer Cave is
located in Ardeche department, on the Mediterranean coast close to the Rhode river. The cave was
discovered by accident when Henri was diving and found an opening.
He kept a secret for many years and went to check it himself from time to time. He trusted

Ethics Of Arranged Marriages
Arranged marriages have been a practice that has been around for a long time. It has been
predominantly common in third world countries where the income gap is significantly obvious
between the wealthy and the poor. By definition, arranged marriage is a marriage that is arranged by
the parents of the man and woman getting married, instead of the man and woman choosing to date
and marry each other. Shafer Landau states that cultural relativism claims that the correct moral
standards are relative to cultures, or societies, where as ethical subjectivism claims that the correct
moral standards are those endorsed by each individual. The practice of arranged marriages and similar
scenario of forced marriages alike are both controversial and up for discussion. ... Show more content

The Importance Of The Women s Rights Movement
Women have waged war for equal rights for over 150 years. Although women had won many battles
in the United States during that time, the 1960 s proved to be the period when the movements greatest
advances would come to fruition. The birth control pill was introduced in 1960, and in 1964 Title VII
of The Civil Rights Act passed which prohibited discrimination in employment based on a person s
sex (U.S. History 884). These two events energized the women s rights movement, and many
significant achievements would follow. The women s rights movement advanced more in 1960 s due
to the birth control pill and the Civil Rights Act than it had in the previous 100 years. One of the
greatest devices in the emancipation of women was the birth control pill. It was approved by the Food
and Drug Administration in 1960 and liberated women by allowing them to restrict, postpone, or
block, pregnancy, and motherhood. According to our textbook. Within five years of the pill s approval,
some six million women were using it (U.S. History 884). The fact that the birth control pill gave
women options never available to them before made it an attractive choice. For the first time, they
could choose to further their education or have a career. As a result, the staggering number of births
also known as the Baby Boomer Generation ended in 1964. Another significant advancement for
women was The Civil Rights Act of 1964. It not only prohibited discrimination by an employer based

business (Whitaker). He attended Luitpold Gymnasium in Munich between the ages of 10 and 15,
exhibiting a keen interest in mathematics, particularly geometry and calculus (Mannoury). He often
stated how he disliked the schools policy of strict memorization, promoting creative and philosophical
thinking. He had a very close relationship with Max Talmud, a medical student and family friend, who

His wife had one more kid and hid him and gave her husband a rock covered in baby clothes and the

In order to be sure that he kept power and the prophecy did not come true, Cronus attempted to escape
fate by swallowing each child as soon as it was born. He ate his kids when they were first born one
bye one but Only 1 kid remained. So he ate his kids so he can be king but he ate a rock in baby clothes
and still had one son somewhere.
For this one I picked Supernatural Creatures for this.
The Bull Man wheeled toward him, pawed to the ground again, and got ready to charge. He was
fighting bull man creature and it killed his mom. Her eyes began to glow like barbecue coals. He
fingers stretched, turning into talons. The jacket melted into large, leathery wings. She wasn t human .
A person he knew was not human she has after him and turned into a monster and fury. He had to fight
many monsters and creatures in his quest.

Greek mythology still matters because we can learn man things and things from 100,000 years ago

Evaluation Of The Montford Unit Offers Services
Following this even further, the Montford unit offers services to admitted patients regardless if they
are offenders or general medical issues for individuals. The services that are provided is 550
psychiatric beds, a 48 bed general medical and surgical unit, gardens for the Lubbock food bank,
housing stables, and roads located on 120 acres of land (Hills, Siegfried, and Ickowitz, 2004, p. 86).
All of these services help offenders because everything is done in house regardless of the issue. They
have food, roof of over their head; they can provide assistance to others by helping box up food items
for the homeless or low income families. They could also do nontraditional activities such as art
therapy, music therapy, occupational therapy, and recreational therapy (Hills, Siegfried, and Ickowitz,
2004, p. 86). The activities will keep their mind active and thinking constantly. It could even lead to a
hobby that can turn into a business. The most important elements to consider for an individual with a
mental illness after being released from a mental health care facility is how they reintegrate with their
family and receive social support. For example, if the individual is going to live with their family the
best thing to do is to assess the families home and living situation, so that the environment is not
threatening to them. It will undermine the treatment process and ruin any positive outcomes the
individual has done up to this point. In order to supplement the

Differences Between Men And Women Essay
In the book it discussed three major differences in cognitive abilities between men and women. The
first having to deal with women having higher verbal abilities, the second being mathematical in
where men are higher and third being spatial abilities which also has men being higher. With the
spatial abilities though there is evidence that women have an advantage on some tasks. Cognitive sex
differences I think are more social than environmental because of things like stereotype threat in
where the person knows of the stereotype and it negatively affects their performance. In the Smith and
white 2012 study found that the performance of college women was worse on a math test when they
heard that men do better on this type of test, but men performance also declined when they heard that
Asians outperform whites. the knowledge of stereotypes has many effects on boys and girls one it
makes them not try as hard because they think it is expected of them to do worse. Yes, I believe that
real differences can be reduced through interventions. Johns et al (2005) found that women who were
informed of the potential effects of gender based stereotype threat performed better than women who
were not. This finding suggests that having explicit conversations with stigmatized students about
stereotype threat and its effects may be a simple yet highly effective intervention.

Importance Of Solar Power
Solar Power This paper is going to be based on why should we use solar energy, how does it work,
what are the advantages of solar power, and why should we apply solar power in the Dominican
Republic. Did you know that the heat of the sun is about equivalent to burning a billion trillion tons of
coal an hour? Even though only a small fraction of that heat ever reaches the earth is still more than
enough to power up our whole planet. We are very certain that we have all heard about the terms fossil
fuels, greenhouse gases, and global warming. Have you ever asked yourself what are going to be the
consequences if nothing is done about our environmental problems facing our world today? What
would be your reaction if I tell you that we can power ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The IEA (International Energy Agency) predicted in 2014 that in 2050, solar power will be around
27% of electricity consumption around the world (16 from PV, 11 from CSP). It was also predicted
that solar power would be the biggest source of energy worldwide, and the most and biggest solar
power installations would be in China and India. Solar power technologies started developing in mid
1860s when the scarcity of coal was beginning to be a concern to people. However in early 20th
century solar power would cease to flow due to the economy and the utility of coal and petroleum.
The use of solar power is being more visible and popular across the world by annum. Just to give a
perspective, in 1974 about only 6 homes in the United States were entirely heated or cooled by solar
power. However, it was predicted that by the end of 2016 around one million homes in the United
States will be fully solar powered. The cost of installation of solar converters is one of the major
issues for the society. Due to high costs of installation, lots of people don t even consider have a solar
source installed. However, people don t usually go into deep analysis, but if you do get into it, you can
notice that, yes, it is expensive to install, but the electric bills will immediately drop, making this
innovation totally worth the investment. Solar power is a fully renewable source of power which does
not lead to

An Analysis of the Airline Industry
My industry analysis will be about the airline industry.
Nature of competition
The airline industry is in a state of oligopoly, bordering onto the state of imperfect competition. The
various aspects that have a bearing on the nature of competition will be covered subsequently.
Imperfect information. There is imperfect information about the airline market. This can be gauged by
the fact that airlines are never sure as to what is the exact demand for seats on any route over the
period of the year. While airlines make fairly accurate guesses about the number of passengers
depending upon season, holidays and weekdays, the goal of ensuring that each aircraft flies with
passengers occupying all the seats in the aircraft is seldom met. While ... Show more content on

This is because there is considerable scope to outsource common services such as catering, ground
handling, aircraft maintenance and reservations. Leasing of aircraft is one method of deferring huge
capital costs. If sufficient passengers are attracted to an airline, it will cross the break even point
(Sundaresan). Therefore, from the point of view of barriers to entry, the airline industry can be
categorized as one having imperfect competition or an oligopoly. Domestic airlines are closer to a
state of imperfect competition, while international airlines function as an oligopoly.
Suppliers. Airplanes, labor and fuel are the major ingredients in running an airline. There are only two
major builders of commercial airplanes in the world Boeing and Airbus. As a result, their pricing does
impact the industry standards to a great degree. However, this is offset by current trends of leasing
aircraft and also by the fact that aircraft purchases span several years, and the effects of purchases are
factored into the business models of airlines. Labor such as pilots, cabin crew and ground support staff
is typically unionized and retains some bargaining power. However, post deregulation, airlines have
the option to invoke Chapter 11 clauses of bankruptcy, to avoid undue pressure form labor unions.
Aviation fuel remains a commodity whose price is guided by geopolitical and economic factors

140 outstanding trails, ranging from novice to double black diamond. Every winter the conditions vary

Progreso Financiero
Progreso Financiero faces two critical problems. First, it is falling significantly short of its sales
forecasts (Exhibit 4), causing concern for investors and employees of the company. Second, Progreso
has not yet identified a clear path to profitability. There are four key drivers to underperformance at
Progreso Financiero: poor sales analytics systems, improper human resource management, poor
managerial decision making and ineffective compensation incentives. The collective result of these
shortcomings is that Progreso s sales employees are highly unmotivated and ill equipped to help the
company realize its sales and profitability goals. In order to be effective, sales executives need to have

Lastly, Progreso s agreement with Sears forced it to offer its customers a form of payment (gift cards)
that limited their spending flexibility and made the offering less attractive overall. While expanding to
merchant accounts increased overall volume of sales, it did so at the expense of its sales employees.
As shown in Exhibit 1, Progreso s merchant launch in September 2007 immediately precipitated a
decline in its loan per employee ratio, well below the commission threshold level. Previously AEs
were able, on average, to reach or surpass 15 loans per month but after the merchant launch, loans per
month declined to 7 per month on average. Despite this, Progreso made no change to its commission
incentive structure to accommodate for the differences in sales velocity by channel. Progreso faces
two key challenges going forward. It must satisfy investors by proving that it can meet its aggressive
sales forecasts and it also must outline a clear path towards profitability. Currently Progresso is
spending more to acquire a customer (~$177 CPA, Exhibit 3) than it is earning in downstream value
from customers acquired (~$100 CLV, Exhibit 2). In order to improve profitability of its customers,

Feminism In Frankenstein
Throughout the past two centuries, many novelists have tried and failed to recapture the true horror
and remorse that Mary Shelley s Frankenstein accomplished. Through firsthand accounts of fictional
events, the story of Frankenstein and his creation stirs up emotions of empathy, turmoil, and fear.
Based on the scientific discoveries of Darwin, Shelley brought forth an idea of reviving dead
substance to life and proclaimed, I have found it! What terrified me will terrify others; and I need only
describe the spectre which had haunted my midnight pillow. (Shelley ix) Shelley published
Frankenstein anonymously and did not live to see its ascent to popularity. This novel, a byproduct of a
ghost story writing contest among friends, went on to become one of the most famous horror novels of
all time. Born on August 30, 1797, to Mary Wollstonecraft and William Godwin, the daughter of two
persons of distinguished literary celebrity, (Ward iii) Mary Godwin entered the world under difficult
circumstances. Only eleven days after her birth, her mother suffered placental infection and died.
Family struggles only continued due to her father s remarriage in 1801. Despite their family s
difficulties, education spread itself equally among all four siblings. Unlike most girls at the time,
Godwin received equal education to that of her brothers; therefore, Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley was a
feminist only insofar as she followed her mother s ideas about unrestricted education for women and

Analysis Of Sunset Blvd And The Great Gatsby By F....
Growing up, Americans begin to form dreams, or goals, based on where they want to go in life. These
dreams may change over time, or remain the same, but they are always the focus of an American s
life. However, there comes a point in life when you must decide whether to continue chasing your
dream or to face reality and give up and illusions you may have about your life. The plot of two
American based stories, Sunset Blvd , directed by Billy Wilder, and The Great Gatsby, by F. Scott
Fitzgerald, revolve around this conflict of illusion, or dreams, against reality and facing the facts of
life. Both Sunset Blvd and The Great Gatsby ultimately side with illusion and dreaming over reality, a
decision which becomes solidified by the closing scenes in both tales, and the death of a main
character.
Sunset Blvd is not subtle in stating illusion will win out over reality. After all, Norma Desmond, the
aged silent movie star who deludes herself into believing that she will be famous again, kills Joe
Gillis, our involved narrator and voice of reason. But before we analyze the dramatic pool scene,
which dispels any idea that Sunset Blvd sides with reality, we must first look at the characters, the
embodiments of dreams and of reality in this movie. Norma Desmond, who dreams of rising to
greatness again, refuses to believe that time has passed and that she no longer has any fans. Max, her
butler and first husband, feeds into this facade by writing her fan mail, encouraging her

Therefore, I understand that the man with the snow job here implies a group of government official. The following metaphor is made when she introduces the email sent from Rahm Emanuel who is in the race for Chicago mayor. The author says that Rahm wasted no time in sending off a storm related e mail, offering a few helpful tips on how to weather the weather. (Collins). Rahm Emanuel is giving some snowstorm survival tips that every citizen already knows. Is it difficult for Chicagoans to survive a snowstorm without Rahm s leadership? Another metaphor is made when she says: We are sick of bad weather and looking for a dumping place for all our bad vibrations (Collins). In this case, bad weather does not literally mean climate change. It implies the bad political and economical situations that people have been undergoing recently such as pension problem, political corruption, and global warming. A dumping place can be considered as a specific person who we can blame to. To support for the sarcastic tone, Collins additionally makes a sophisticated simile: We would like to blame one specific person like the evil queen in the movie Red Sonja who used a magic orb to destroy entire civilizations with terrible storms until she was vanquished by Red Sonja and Arnold Schwarzenegger. • 3. The Pros And Cons Of Brown V Board Of Education The Brown V Board of Education case overturned provisions of the Plessy v Ferguson decision of 1896 which allowed separate but equal in all public areas including public schools. This case began a spark in the American Civil Rights Movement by demanding public facilities to allow African Americans the same privileges as whites. This case ended tolerance of racial segregation, however, the decision did not succeed in fully desegregating public education, but it definitely started a revolution. In addition to separate but equal, most facilities ignored the requirement, including most school districts which neglected their all black schools. In the early 1950s, NAACP lawyers brought class action lawsuits on behalf of black school students in multiple states including Virginia, Delaware, Kansas and South Carolina, seeking court orders to demand school districts to let black students attend white public schools. One of these class actions, Brown V Board of Education was filed against the Topeka Kansas school board by a man by the name of Oliver Brown, a parent of one of the students that was denied access to Topeka s white schools. Oliver Brown claimed that Topeka s racial segregation violated the constitution s Equal Protection Clause which says no state shall make or enforce any law which shall deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws , this amendment did not include prohibiting integration. The federal district court dismissed his claim and ruled that segregation in public schools were substantially equal enough . The court negotiated and in the end decided that even if the facilities were equal between white and black schools, racial segregation in schools is inherently unequal , meaning it had been unconstitutional. The court later demanded the states to integrate their schools immediately. Brown v. Board of Education case had a major impact on not only the Civil Rights Movement but society as a whole. As we all know, segregation between black and whites has gone on forever. Generations continued to teach their children and explain to them that it was normal, up until these landmark cases began did it become known that it isn t right to treat others differently based on ... The Effects Of National Pride On Our Society National pride often can be beneficial to our society; in fact, numerous citizens in every country take pride of their country, ethnicity, culture, religion, and even sometimes their current status of wealth. Therefore, having patriotic ideas and feelings are not terrible; actually, it gives us as citizens an image and it defines us for who we are. Nevertheless, there are problems in every major part of our society that ends up taking an advantage of pride against other ethnic groups. In other words, judging and comparing others through stereotypes leads to the extreme tendencies to passively become racist. We see it in TVs, movies, music, social media, in our political environment, and in our daily lives. Thus, we agree and realize that racism still exists today; due to our naïve behaviors, poor perspectives, and opinions that we easily judge our diversity. In fact, I would admit myself that I was racist towards Americans without knowing until an encounter with an American ESL (English as a Second Language) teacher that enlightened me and changed my perspective towards the American people. Before I met my teacher in America, it all started when I was an elementary student in South Korea apparently learning English for the first time. It has been predominantly common in third world countries where the income gap is significantly obvious between the wealthy and the poor. By definition, arranged marriage is a marriage that is arranged by the parents of the man and woman getting married, instead of the man and woman choosing to date and marry each other. Shafer Landau states that cultural relativism claims that the correct moral standards are relative to cultures, or societies, where as ethical subjectivism claims that the correct moral standards are those endorsed by each individual. The topic of arranged marriage is not in our dictionary, such an approach in dictating our dating lives is out of the question. • 21. The Importance Of The Women s Rights Movement Women have waged war for equal rights for over 150 years. Although women had won many battles in the United States during that time, the 1960 s proved to be the period when the movements greatest advances would come to fruition. The birth control pill was introduced in 1960, and in 1964 Title VII of The Civil Rights Act passed which prohibited discrimination in employment based on a person s sex (U.S. History 884). These two events energized the women s rights movement, and many significant achievements would follow. The women s rights movement advanced more in 1960 s due to the birth control pill and the Civil Rights Act than it had in the previous 100 years. One of the greatest devices in the emancipation of women was the birth control pill. It was approved by the Food and Drug Administration in 1960 and liberated women by allowing them to restrict, postpone, or block, pregnancy, and motherhood. According to our textbook. Within five years of the pill s approval, some six million women were using it (U.S. History 884). The fact that the birth control pill gave women options never available to them before made it an attractive choice. For the first time, they could choose to further their education or have a career. As a result, the staggering number of births also known as the Baby Boomer Generation ended in 1964. Another significant advancement for women was The Civil Rights Act of 1964. The first having to deal with women having higher verbal abilities, the second being mathematical in where men are higher and third being spatial abilities which also has men being higher. With the spatial abilities though there is evidence that women have an advantage on some tasks. Cognitive sex differences I think are more social than environmental because of things like stereotype threat in where the person knows of the stereotype and it negatively affects their performance. In the Smith and white 2012 study found that the performance of college women was worse on a math test when they heard that men do better on this type of test, but men performance also declined when they heard that Asians outperform whites. the knowledge of stereotypes has many effects on boys and girls one it makes them not try as hard because they think it is expected of them to do worse. Yes, I believe that real differences can be reduced through interventions. Johns et al (2005) found that women who were informed of the potential effects of gender based stereotype threat performed better than women who were not. This finding suggests that having explicit conversations with stigmatized students about stereotype threat and its effects may be a simple yet highly effective intervention.
