What Is The Evil In Lord Of The Flies
There is darkness inside everyone. Evil, malice, wickedness. Society attempts to stomp out these
innate traits. In his critically acclaimed novel, Lord of the Flies, William Golding explores what
happens to a person when the pressures of society are removed. A group of British boys are stranded
on an island without any adults. They form a society that slowly falls apart as half of the boys, led by
Jack, are drawn into the savage life accepted on the island. Ralph s group attempts to remain civil, but
their success is questionable. Jack s group becomes more and more brutal and savage, and three of the
boys die. Golding wrote this book as an allegory for the psychoanalytic theory of the personality, the
Id, Ego, and Superego. The Id is the evil part, driven by base instincts and desires. The Superego
strives for morality and rules, and the Ego attempts to balance the two out. Golding strongly believed
that humans at their most base level are evil, a theory developed through his life experiences. Golding
fought in WW II, and is quoted saying World War II was the turning point for me. I began to see what
people were capable of doing. ( William Golding 3) Golding believed that without society people
would revert entirely to the Id, foregoing the Superego. He expressed this message in Lord of the Flies
by characterizing different boys as the different parts of the personality. He explored what happens to
the personality through the development of these characters. Golding

Educational Philosophies Influence Curriculum From The...
Abstract
Educational philosophies influence curriculum from the establishment of the American school
systems. The five major philosophies that have influence American education are: 1) Idealism, 2)
Essentialism, 3) Perennialism, 4) Progressivism, and 5) Experimentalism. Idealism, Essentialism, and
Perennialism are all teacher based philosophies putting the teacher at the core of the educational
experience, with students being passive members of the classroom. In contrast, Progressivism and
Experimentalism are student centered philosophies that focus on the child and their contribution and
participation in the formation of classroom experiences, using teachers as guides to help students in
their educational development. Although the philosophies differ, many of them define curriculum as a
encompassing unit of goals, methods, materials and assessment.
Introduction
Since the establishment of America s first schools, the American people have disagreed not only about
what the purpose of school is, but also about what schools should teach. Initially schools were
supposed to prepare men to vote intelligently and prepare women to train their sons properly. Moral
training based on the Protestant Bible would produce virtuous, well behaved citizens [who knew not
only] the three R s but [also] the general principles of law, commerce, money, and government
(Kaestle, 1983, p. 5). During the 1780 s educational theorists began calling for reform and in 1785

LITERATURE KEY FINDINGS Creating an Effective Reward and Recognition Program Key
Finding 1: Approximately 90% of companies maintain some type of reward and recognition program.
The majority of companies use these programs to create a positive work environment, improve
employee morale, and motivate high performance. Research suggests that when designed and
implemented properly, reward and recognition positively affects an organization s bottom line. The

Recently published literature reveals that there are several key components of any effective reward
and recognition program. Multiple authors argue that programs missing any one of these key
components will, at best, fail to engage employees, and at worst alienate employees. In fact, according
to Bob Nelson, the author of 1001 Ways to Reward Employees, some forms of awards can hurt
organizations by promoting a culture of entitlement. Additional research reveals that programs that are
impersonal or reward too few people may alienate employees. These key 14,15,16 components and
case examples of their influence are detailed below: 17 SSMART REWARDS Jim Brintnall, author of

expectations of the workforce with the company s overall goals and strategies. A program that
reinforces important company values and goals will encourage employees to act in line with such
goals and emphasize the importance of achieving these goals. Alternatively, rewards which do not

The Trial Stage Of The Court
If a plea agreement is not reached, then the process moves to the motions phase. During this time, the
defense and prosecution can file pretrial motions to suppress evidence due to faulty police line ups,
coerced confessions, and illegal search and seizures. Once all pretrial motions are filed, the process
moves to the trial stage. The trial stage is where the case, from the prosecution and defense, is
presented to the jury for their deliberation of the verdict.
During the motions stage of the process, discussed about, Mr. Blackbeard s defense will submit
motions regarding the clothing found in the alcove, the rifle, the handbag, canister containing the
quarters, and the bloody towel. The defense will argue that the police did not have a warrant to search
Mr. Blackbeard s sleeping quarters and that he has the right to expect privacy in the area where he was
sleep and kept his belongings. This would be a violation of the Fourth Amendment, which is the right
of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, paper, and effects, against unreasonable search and
seizures, shall not be violated... . The defense will argue that the police did not have consent, nor
probable cause to search the vehicle which resulted in the discovery of Ms. Lovely s purse, canister
containing quarters, and the bloody towel. In response to the rifle, the defense will argue that the
police had no warrant or probable cause to collect the rifle. While the police were at the scene where

Is Mayella Ewell Powerful Or Powerful Analysis
Is Mayella ewell powerful? That is the question that is asked and must be answered.Throughout the
story To kill a mockingbird Mayella shows some glimpses of power but not enough to say she is
powerful. For example in the beginning she shows that she can not even control her home life so how
can she be powerful. Also she shows that she is just too poor for her to have power. Now in the next
three paragraphs I will explain my thinking on why I believe Mayella is not powerful.
In the first paragraph I will explain why and how I believe Mayella Ewell is not powerful, with the use
of class.First off I would like to show you one of my biggest reasons for believing Mayella is not
powerful Maycombs Ewells lived behind the town garbage dump in what used to be a negro cabin .
(DBQ:Is mayella Ewell powerful?13)The second reason I believe Mayella Ewell is not powerful while
using class for my examples is that longs as he keeps on callin me ma am and sayin miss Mayella.I
don t hafta take his sass, I ain t called upon to take it (DBQ: Is Mayella Ewell powerful?.17). Now you
can see even in her dialect she does not know or have class, you can also tell by the way she is not
used to being called ma am and miss Mayella.Next I will show how much of a lower class the Ewells
are in Mayella Ewell must have the loneliest person in the world...; white people wouldn t have
anything to do with her because she lived among pigs (DBQ:Is mayella Ewell powerful 21).The final

Butler Act Dbq
In the 1920 s, many people became familiar with religions that are known today. Religions would
follow what is so called planned for them written in the books. The Butler Act made it illegal to teach
about religions from the textbooks. This included that teachers as any school were allowed to teach
and about the science of evolution. The conflicts that the Butler Act made were between tradition and
modernity. This act was worrying parents that it would change, and make a big effect for their children
s education. These are reasons why people cared about the Butler Act. It also questioned the simple
debate between evolution and creation. John Scopes was the first to argue about the importance of
teaching science. Later on, there was a Scopes trial in Dayton,Tennessee. ... Show more content on

our civilization. ( Doc A) A reason that the Butler Act was important to people was because it would
change that way that the child knew about their own beliefs. Some people were either against their
children/students knowing about evolution, and having them know which book to believe in. John
Scopes was a biology teacher at the time. He taught from the book which eventually, broke the law
about the teaching of evolution in Tennessee. Change was an impact for a student s educational
environment, especially in the studies of children. The Butler Act was changing the minds of students
of what they should really believe in and if they really are learning the truth about their religion or
anything else in particular. Parent or guardian s didn t need the hassle of a different mind set for their

The Greatest Physical Of Sports
People love to watch, play, and enjoy sports or cheering for teams. In the majority of sports that are
physical and require a lot of contact that could potentially cause injuries. The most physical of sports
such as hockey, soccer, football, and boxing can make the people who care about them worried for
their health. Some people don t understand that the helmet the players wear don t always prevent the
athletes from getting concussions or the fracture of your skull. You can get a concussion by having
your brain constantly hit your skull. The NFL should take more necessary precautions every time a
player suffers from damage. There is are diseases called CTE which means chronic traumatic
encephalopathy players get playing that turn into medical bills need to be paid for by the NFL because
players often are pressured to ignore the symptoms of a concussion and go back out to play. Players
should be aware of the consequences and risk that can occur when they make these decisions. I
believe that they should study about what can actually happen to their health so that they can prevent
getting concussions and acknowledge the negative effects.
These days most athletes worry about how big their pay checks going to be than actually caring what s
on the scoreboard. A good of players know that if they aren t actually playing the game then they are
not getting paid. If they always keep this concept in their heads than most players will most likely not

Great Expectations Manipulation
Some people spend their whole life trying to accomplish a particular something. It might be an
achievement or just simply trying to be perfect, but what actually define us as a person and the true
value of our lives? How can we possibly know if the life we are living now will be worthy in the end
and we will not regret anything when we look back onto it? In Great Expectations by Charles Dickens,
he states that life would not be as gratifying if one s life is filled with manipulation and comparison,
instead one must self seek and enhance himself/herself in every aspect throughout the course of life.
In the first part of Dickens novel, all I can deduce from Joe, Pip s brother in law, is the fact that he

Pip recognized that he does not read or write well as he never receives any schooling. He hoped to
acquire a chance to receive education, as he understands that it inspires the key to success or possibly
allowing him to move up in terms of his social class. Without dreams and purposes in life, it would be
pointless to live, as one cannot appreciate the goodness in life. No doubt education plays a crucial role
in creating a success life, however do not let those standards conceal who you truly are or alter your
purpose in life. Joe demonstrated to Pip that life without literacy could also be worthwhile as long as
you successfully seek your own self and find your own purpose in life by improving a little bit each
day. When Pip got this message from Joe, he dated a new admiration of Joe... and [he] was looking up
to Joe in [his] heart (50). He realizes that Joe s saying is right and he should spend time focusing on

Ted Bundy and Psychodynamic Theory Essay
Theodore Bundy was born on November 24th 1946. He was born to an unwed mother who was told
that she was his sister. He was raised by his grandparents who portrayed themselves as his parents
throughout his early childhood years. According to the article I read Ted s grandfather was abusive
towards Ted and his other siblings (Montaldo). Ted was shy and said to be sociably awkward, but
during high school he developed into good looking guy and was liked by many. Ted met his first
girlfriend in college and eventually falls in love. His girlfriend did not see Ted as someone who would
be successful and eventually broke up with him and this broke his heart. This was about the time he
learned the truth about his family too. He developed ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Psychodynamic theorists believe that this disorder begins during infancy when infants either develop
trust or mistrust towards their caregivers. In the case of Ted this very issue caused a lot of turmoil for
him. He grew up thinking that his grandparents were his parents and that is sister was his mother. I
think that this was very hard for him to accept and he felt like he could not trust anyone. Researchers
have supported the psychodynamic theory by claiming that people with disorder have been subjected
to family violence and parental conflict or divorce. Ted s grandfather was said to be violent towards
Ted and his other siblings. I believe that Ted s environment played a huge role in his developing
antisocial disorder and that these factors would be listed under axis IV of the DSM IV TR. Michael
Packard who was an editor for DSM IV s criteria developed a way to determining the GAF or the
Global Assessment Functioning. He suggests moving up and down the scale until the person s status at
that moment is described. I chose the time in Ted s life when he was killing and found his GAF to be a
4 or lower according Packard s method. At this level the DSM IV s criteria would be that Ted was a
persistent danger of severely hurting others (Midwest Behavioral Health Network, 2009).
Psychodynamic theorists would believe that Ted s past experiences would contribute to his disorder.
They believe that psychological

As a member that is part of the UC s Lick Observatory Planet Hunter Team, I have found a possible
planetary system that may contain a planet. From my further research, I discovered that the planet may
support life, such as bacteria and plants. After confirming with the Search for Extraterrestrial
Intelligence Institute about intelligent life, I eventually decided to want to discuss intelligent life
through a scientific process. I will use the Drake Equation to give us the possibility that intelligent life
can emit signals to reveal any existence. The equation is given as N= R* x fp x ne x fl x fi x fc x L.
The calculations of each variables will help me understand what is being contributed into calculating
the chance of any signals being detected and the calculated result will determined the conclusion of
intelligent life existing. Nevertheless, this is just an estimation for the possibility of any life as the
Drake Equation may or may not be as reliable as we may expect it to be. Calculations Step 1. I know
that there are 7 new stars formed yearly in the galaxy, the number of stars is represented by R*. This is
the annual rate of star formation that is adaptable for any life. So R* will equal 7 new stars formed
every year. R* = 7 new stars formed every year Step 2. There is a 100% chance that if there are stars,
then there has to exist planetary systems. So, R* = 7 new stars annually and fp = 1/1 relationship
between stars and planetary systems or 1. Next, I take 7

Why Do I Choose Texas Tech Essay
What is your reason for choosing Texas Tech?
Senior year is such a busy, long, and stressful school. On top of all that is deciding which college you
would want to attend and the process to get into whatever school you choose. Personally, ever since I
was young, I was kind of obligated to attend Texas Tech by my relatives. Being that I was born in the
small town of Brownfield, Texas and most of my family is from there, they made frequent trips to
Lubbock being that it was only forty five minutes away. Thus, they fell in love with the school, their
sports teams, and the environment. I on the other hand, hadn t experienced all this due to the fact that I
grew up in Amarillo, Texas. But every time my family would visit my relatives in Brownfield, I would
always expect the usual So have you applied to Tech yet? and We re going to have a Red Raider in the
family! but you know at the time I was just starting senior year. Nonetheless I really needed to start
thinking about it because in no time I ll be graduating high school. When I did start deciding what
college I wanted to attend, my family didn t really want me to attend a college out of state because
they wanted me to be close if I ever needed anything and wanted me to safe. So that narrowed it down
quite a bit. Being from Amarillo, we had a community college of Amarillo College and West ... Show

The Importance Of Oil Prices In America
Oil prices affect most American s daily lives. Whether it is used to fuel your car, a plane, to heat your
home, or even if it is just used inside products, like plastic that we use daily, oil plays a role in all of
our lives. Last year, in 2015, an extreme decline in gas prices swept the United States. For example,
oil prices have decreased to less than $30 a barrel which is the lowest it has ever been in 12 years.
There are many factors that can contribute to this sudden decline in gas prices, but their are three that
are the most relevant. These include, the recent advancements in other fuel sources, the changes in the
leading oil suppliers of the world, and the simple economic concept of supply and demand. These
three ideas are all important in contributing to the fall of gas prices. ... Show more content on

Alternative fuel sources are defined as sources used to reduce our dependence on imported oil, and to
rely more on renewable resources. Solar panels, an example of an alternative fuel source, can be put
on houses or buildings, designed to absorb light rays and convert it into electricity or heat (What Are
Solar Panels). This eliminates the need for oil to heat your home. Another alternative fuel source are
hybrid cars. Hybrid cars are a mix of gas and electricty but still cuts down the need for oil
substantially. They work by using a gas engine and electric motor to propel itself. Both solar panels
and hybrid cars, either eliminate the need for oil or limit it which is why they are a top cause for the

President Obama s educational journey as a means to developing the necessary skills to be a leader,
but also viewed Obama as an intellectual and philosophical president which he believes are unique

Pragmatism deals with a straight forward way of thinking and is centered on solving problems. As
stated in lecture eight, pragmatists promoted a philosophy of relativism not universalism (Professor
Garcia Lecture 8). This means that, in terms of pragmatism, one does what they consider is essential
instead of following a natural law based upon philosophical principles and morality. In any matter, the
truth as to what the right thing to do is relative to the situation and there is not a universally correct
answer for all eternity. What is considered right changes over the years and law is meant to be
changed as economic and political situations vary. The political philosophy of pragmatism helps
Kloppenberg support his argument that Obama is more than just intelligent, that he is an intellectual.
Kloppenberg states that, Obama is also very much an intellectual along with being a politician
(Kloppenberg). He stresses that unlike other Presidents who were extremely intelligent, President
Obama is able to interrogate his own convictions to place them in a broader cultural and historical
context by imaginatively scrutinizing them from a position centuries in the future without abandoning
them (Kloppenberg). Other Presidents, such as Richard Nixon, were considered extremely intelligent
in Kloppenberg s opinion; however, he believed that was a result of opportunism and the goal of
career advancement. Furthermore,

Environmental Effects Of Invasive Species
The dangers to our world today have resulted in serious problems. In this regard, our ecosystems are
threatened by invasive species. These species have concluded into significant habitat destruction. For
example, Phragmites Australis, also known as the common reed is a major invasive species around the
world. These originated from Europe and are now found all over the United States. They have been
around for two centuries and are still around today. Common reeds are found to be native and
nonnative. This species is a part of the grass family, usually hollow and green with yellow knots. They
are around 6 13 feet tall and are found in wetlands and ditches. There are three lineages created of the
common reed, one, the North American lineage. Invasive species have negative, detrimental effects on
the ecosystems and environments.
In the article, Phragmites, Invasions Harm Riparian Property Values, studies are showing that the
common reed is a harmful plant. For example, they block parts of the sidewalks and restrict the access
to water, such as on lakes or ponds. For instance, residents pay excessive amounts of money to live on
lakes, that offer all the water activities and a pretty view in general, but when the invasive species
intrude they block the views and access to the water. In result, it ends up leaving these places unable to
manage. The other effect they leave is with sidewalks. They usually spread from ditches to all over the
sidewalks and such. Therefore, they

Pop Culture And Its Effect On Society
Introduction
Popular culture has manifested itself in a number of ways. Currently, the most commonly used method
of spreading and exchanging opinions, ideas, art, and other concepts is through the internet. Never
before has it been so easy to shed light on a person or an idea, giving it levels of popularity that were
considered inconceivable in ages past. In many circumstances the way people are portrayed through
pop culture is most likely how they were perceived by the bulk of people. Pop/culture serves as a way
to connect people; help them relate to one another over shared opinions and interests. It was and is the
representative of the majority. But what of the times before the internet? How was pop culture
expressed in a time when people did not have the ability to express their thoughts and opinions with
millions at a time almost instantaneously? Theatre is one of the most time honored means of
entertainment. Before television and computers and the internet, actors would don a costume and tell
act for masses of people. It was a form of storytelling that was not limited to the literate or rich or the
scholars, but could be enjoyed by anyone form any economic background. Through it we can see our
history and opinions in the form of characters, plots, and settings. We can observe the changing of
mainstream opinions through the common themes and recurring motifs in the most popular plays.

As society has evolved through history, one of the great cultural and social issues has been the
equality of gender in all aspects of life. This development has been particularly true in both the United
States and Israel, where the position of women in society has moved forward from archaic ideals
towards building a foundation of gender equality. This foundation has been based on the belief that
individuals in society are entitled to human dignity and liberty, entitling them equal opportunities in
life. Equal opportunities for individuals can also be supported through economic reasoning. With
equal opportunities for both genders in the workforce, the entire population is more productive and the

Freud based his theory of psychoanalysis on unconscious forces, sexual aggressive instincts, and early
childhood experiences as what shapes who we are as adults. Even though his approaches may not be
favored completely today research has shown that the self examination used in his psychoanalytic
process can contribute to one s long term emotional growth (Cherry, K. 2016b). Health professionals
were enlightened by psychoanalysis to the inner workings of the human mind, which were previously
inexplicable (Beystehner, K.M., n.d.). Sigmund Freud s research indicated that our behavior is
influenced by id, ego and superego, or what he termed structure of personality (nthdimension, 2010).
The id is present at birth and is the most basic and primitive part of our personality. Id s drive is
instinctual and can be described as having the life instinct named Eros and the death instinct named
Thanatos. Id is responsible for the basic, instinctual needs of survival like hunger and thirst. Ego is
developed to compromise between the instinctual desire driven Id and the external expectations of
parents and society. Superego is developed when a child is about 5 years old and is the internalization
of the expectations of parents and society that aides them to evaluate their behaviors for what s
acceptable or not acceptable.

shook up by the situation the writer is. Uptight is also has a direct meaning in the sense of his general
apprehension towards the situation.
The following four lines are repetition of previous lines and generally have the same meaning behind
them. quot;I am covered my skin, / No one gets to come in, / Pull me out from inside quot;(10 12);
these three lines by far has to be the most touching part of the song. It is actually sort of self
explanatory in a sense. By saying he is covered in skin it is analogous to having a wall of defense up

John Steinbeck
John Steinbeck was born on February 27, 1902 in Salinas, California. John decided to be a writer at
the very young age of fourteen. John used to lock himself in his bedroom and to be alone and write
stories and poem (John Steinbeck Biography). John was the first in his family to have a striving desire
to become a writer, his father did everything he could to keep food on the table and his mother was a
former school teacher. To do this he worked several jobs at a time, he never got to enjoy what he does
like Steinbeck went on to do. John went on to try to be a freelance writer, so he work as a construction
worker and a newspaper reported in New York, New York. He wrote his first novel called The Cup of
Gold while living in Lave, Tahoe working as a caretaker. John went on to marry Carol Henning. She
was supportive by working several jobs to help him continue with his writing career.
John went to Stanford university in 1919, he dropped out six years later with no degree. John went
more to impress his parents than doing heat he wanted to do. One of John Steinbeck s most successful
written pieces was The grapes of wrath. This novel was so popular and well read that, when released it
sold ten thousand copies per week. This novel won a Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award.
My favorite John Steinbeck novel is Of Mice and Men. This book takes place in California in the
1930s. It is

Rape as a War Tactic in the Rwandan Genocide
The sweetly sickening odor of decomposing bodies hung over many parts of Rwanda in July 1994: . . .
at Nyarubuye in eastern Rwanda, where the cadaver of a little girl, otherwise intact, had been flattened
by passing vehicles to the thinness of cardboard in front of the church steps, (Deforges 6). The
normalcy of horrible images like this one had cast a depressing gloom over Rwanda during the
genocide, a time when an extreme divide caused mass killings of Tutsi by the Hutu. Many tactics such
as physical assault or hate propaganda are well known and often used during times of war. Sexual
assault and rape, however, during times of war is an unspoken secret it is well known that rape occurs

After she was seized, she had been raped multiple times not only because of her beauty, but also
because she had been sleeping with Tutsis which therefore meant that she could sleep with the Hutu as
well (Mullins 726). The woman had been raped in front of four Interhamwe soldiers as well as a large
group of refugees. In the chaos after of the rape by Musema, the woman was ordered to turn over from
her stomach to her back and raped by multiple soldiers in turns. Her breast was cut off by one of the
soldiers, which they tried to make her child eat (Mullins 726 727). The violence and chaos allowed for
the pre existing animosities to turn into the crime of rape. The act, though isolated, was obviously
meant directed towards the entire Tutsi population as a whole. Alfred Musema was a man who often
engaged in these opportunistic rapes, which were single episode events (Mullins 726).
During the Rwandan genocide, some rapes occurred recurrently throughout a timespan. Sexual
enslavements occurred when a woman was detained, typically in the house of an Interhamwe, and
subjected to repeated sexual assaults over a period of days, (Mullins 727). These kinds of rapes belong
in their own category because of the added element of confinement and intent to continually rape and
therefore, harm. An Interhamwe soldier named Rafiki, personally sought out one Tutsi woman whom

American Schools Are Failing For Minority Students
The idea that American schools are failing is not a new one, but it is an idea that is extremely
widespread. There are constant news reports claiming that our schools are worse than ever and
Congress has passed extensive legislation such as No Child Left behind in an attempt to fix the
American educational system. Some people believe that American schools are not completely failing,
but only failing for minority students. Reforms like mandatory busing, vouchers, charter schools,
accountability, and high stakes testing have been proposed to address these social inequalities. Despite
the intentions of these policies, they have not always helped close the social inequality gap.
Mandatory busing was a reform started in the 1970s to desegregate ... Show more content on

Mandatory busing helped push out students that were more likely to succeed from public schools
leaving behind the students that struggled the most.
A more recent educational reform program is the concept of school choice. Instead of being forced to
attend the school chosen by the local district students would receive vouchers. Students would be able
to take their voucher and apply the funds normally allocated to them at any school. Parents would be
able to decide which school is the best for their children and students that would normally be trapped
in a low performing school could instead attend a different school. A problem with vouchers is that
private schools are allowed to approve if a student can attend. The students that could benefit the most
from moving to a private school could be refused admittance. Another issue is that higher income
families would be more likely to use this program than lower income families that do not have the
same values in education. Finally school vouchers would be taking money away from the public
school system which would reduce the quality of education that the public schools could provide.
Charter schools are another approaching in allow parents and students to have a choice in where their
children go to school. Charter schools are approved by a

Chinese Immigrants To Canada
During the early 20th century, Asian immigrants who came to Canada faced a great deal of backlash
from Canadian society. Among these men and women who came overseas, the Chinese suffered the
brunt of the racial discrimination that ran rampant in Canada, and were treated distinguishably worse
than any other group of immigrants. Although many other immigrants were met with prejudice and
racial stereotyping on arrival, there was no other group that experienced the same level of organized
racism as Chinese immigrants did. Discriminatory acts were not only conducted on a communal and
societal level, but also found its way into Canadian politics. What resulted from this was a national
effort to limit the Chinese from both entering Canada as well ... Show more content on

Chinese immigrants were not only denounced for their negative impact on Canada s economy, but as a
greater threat towards Canada s culture. As such, many community leaders, labour organization
leaders and even government officials called for exclusionary measures against Chinese immigrants,
ranging from stripping them of their ability to organize to implementing harsh limitations on
immigration and business conduct. It was assumed by labour leaders that Asian workers were
impossible to organize, and therefore felt they had no choice but to demand exclusionary policies,
regardless of the Asian involvement in labour militancy which closely aligned with the goals of
Canadian labour unions (Goutor, 2007, 554). At the time, many other policies were also enacted to
severely limit the already scarce amount of freedom that Chinese immigrants had, one of which was
the Act to Prevent the Employment of Female Labour in Certain Capacities which was a statute that
made it a criminal offense for Chinese men to employ white women (Backhouse, 1996, 315). The act
was put into motion by the propaganda fed fear of Chinese men, who were regularly portrayed as
sexual predators [that] sought to take advantage of white women (Goutor, 2007, 556). The Chinese
Immigration Act came into effect in 1923,

Captain Beatty Character Analysis
Anyone who has read the book Fahrenheit 451 will immediately remember the infamous Captain
Beatty. For people who have not read the book, or do not remember Captain Beatty, he is the fire chief
who has a very controversial role in the book. He starts out looking like the antagonist of the story but
then towards the end of the book one could wonder if he was the alter ego of Montag, for example, he
shows the other way the story of Montag could have gone instead of him ending up with Granger s
group helping re educate the world one book at a time.
In the beginning, Beatty seems like the typical fireman in that time, against books, seems to have
never read any books, burns houses, and blindly following what the government tells him to, ... Show

The exact quote Beatty says There is no terror, Cassius, in your threats, for I am arm d so strong in
honesty that they pass me as an idle wind, which I respect not! (119) This shows that even Beatty was
reading books for quite some time. This is where the similarity between Montag and Beatty ends, and
where their stories take different routes. At this point, Montag stood up for what he believed in and
risked his life. This could have gone another way, Beatty s way, Montag could have sucked it up and
stayed a fireman and lived a lie like Beatty had.
Shortly after that quote, Montag realized that Beatty wanted to die, on page 122, and he was
wondering why. In class, we think that Beatty wanted to die because he did not want to have to carry
the burden of reading when it is against the law or without being able to share it with everyone and he
thought that the only way for him to get rid of that burden was to die. Montag could have thought that
and committed suicide like Beatty did but since we established Beatty was Montag s alter ego he did
not do that and he went to find Granger s group instead.
In conclusion, Beatty can be depicted as both an antagonist and as Montag s alter ego/ other half
because he was living a very similar life to Montag such as being a fire chief, reading books, being
bombarded with questions etc, until he took a different road at the end, which seemed like a safer road
because he still had his job and a good

Helicobacter Pylori Research Paper
Helicobacter Pylori at Tight Junctions
Prior to the isolation of Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori} by Robin Warren and Barry Marshall in 1982,
it was theorized that peptic ulceration, an ailment first described in 1857 by William Brinton, stemmed
from poor diet, tobacco use, and stress due to the failure to definitively identify a causative agent as
well as the belief that the inhospitable environment within the human stomach resulted in its sterility
(Tanenbaum 2005). Because physicians were ignorant to the existence of H. pylori, individuals
suffering from peptic ulcerations underwent ineffective treatments for over a century. The successful
isolation of H. pylori and identification of its role in gastric diseases earned Warren and Marshall a
joint Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 2005 (The Nobel Prize 2005). Despite the passage of
thirty two years, modern medicine has been unable to definitively eradicate H. pylori, but research
continues in hopes of developing a more permanent cure as well as effective methods of preventing
initial peptic ulceration, as occurrence is linked to an increased risk of developing gastric carcinomas.

Asian Stereotypes in the Media
Introduction By definition, Media Literacy is defined as the ability to access, analyze, evaluate, and
create media. The power of the media should not be underestimated. Millions of teens and adults
spend hours watching television and surfing the web on a daily basis. With the use of media literacy,
these individuals that utilize hours of their daily lives can be protected from pressures of media
disinformation that also pushes them to become the idealistic human model it wishes them to be. By
teaching majority of our communities about media literacy, we can free them from the standardized
pressures of society itself. These free beings will no longer feel the needs to live up to the expectations
of the media as they will discover the falsified truth when analyzed deeply. Educating the population
will not only free their minds mentally, but it will strengthen their capability of thinking also. Media
Literacy provides opportunities for anyone to build communication skills, boost his or her confidents
to interpret multiple media sources at the same time, and as well as realistically designating the
portrayal of his or her position along with others in a perspective view. One can take advantage of
media literacy to improve his or her media use habits, such as constant television viewing behaviors.
With the impact of educating the life of an individual with Media Literacy, we can advance the
habitual uses of media of that human being s family and develop more intellectual

Traditional Marital Customs Still Play Essay
Introduction
Family has long been treated as the basic unit in Chinese society. Traditional marital customs still play
a pivotal role in people s common life, especially in their own marriage practices. The majority of
Chinese people follow the basic ancient marital principle: a man or woman should get married upon
coming of age. In contemporary Chinese society, when young people coming to the age of marriage,
parents, realities and other significant others usually push them to take their heterosexual boyfriend or
girlfriend back home (Lee, 2013). Their pressure has been exacerbated becasue most of the family
have only one kid due to the Chinese one child policy. Parents almost focus all their attention on the
success of career and marriage of their only child. British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) news had
reported that in order to release the pressure from families, some single young people are resorting to
renting fake boyfriends or girlfriends and come back to their home to appease their parents and
significant others on some important holidays (Hatton, 2013). Obviously, the homosexual individuals
suffered more pressures from family and society. Traditional cultural values exert much influence
upon young people s mentality and make them struggle between their sexual identities and
expectations from the outside environment. In particular, parental attitudes toward marriage and

Photosynthesis Is The Conversion Of Light Energy Essay
Photosynthesis is the conversion of light energy to chemical energy. There are many different factors
that can affect the rate of photosynthesis, those being light intensity, the temperature of the water, the
amount of carbon dioxide in the water, and the color of the light. In this experiment we chose to alter
the color of light that was used in the process involving the aquatic plant Elodea while maintaining the
other 3 factors. This experiment was conducted to see how much of an effect the color of the light
played in the amount of carbon dioxide produced in the process of photosynthesis. We measured the
amount of NaOH that was needed to color the water pink and then converted the net difference of
drops into the net volume of carbon dioxide that was produced or consumed. The results showed that
there was not a significant difference in the amount of carbon dioxide produced when using a standard
regular colored light bulb compared to a green light bulb.
Introduction
Elodea, an aquatic plant, is very commonly used in classrooms around the world to help teach the
process of photosynthesis (Berkeley 2015). Photosynthesis is the conversion of light energy to
chemical energy. The process of photosynthesis occurs in the chloroplast of the plants. Inside the
chloroplast is chlorophyll, which is what absorbs the light energy from the sunlight. Light intensity,
the temperature of the water, the amount of carbon dioxide in the water, and the color of light used are

How Nurturing Shapes The Hero
How Nurturing Shapes the Hero
The topic of human morality has been debated by great thinkers throughout human history. And
human nature too is like the water: it doesn t chose between good and evil any more than water
chooses between east and west. (Austin 79) In fact, it can be argued that what constitutes an
immutable form of good vs. evil has been at the source of debates in both religious morality and a
broader philosophical understanding of what these forms represent. Furthermore, morality has been
fluid over time, changing to reflect the cultural mores of society; given enough time, even perception
of previously taboo practices has changed in response to changes in culture as well as the proliferation
and recession of religion. As ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Proponents of an absolute definition of morals suggest that there is a defined right and wrong and that
acting in a way that is virtuous or immoral, respectively, determines one s fate in the afterlife. This is
not universal, as the behaviors deemed as moral depend on religious custom, and both the benefits and
penalties of adhering to them require a shared belief. One such scholar, Immanuel Kant believed the
moral law must carry with it absolute necessity (Kant 2). A contemporary Christian viewpoint is that a
practicing Christian is inherently sinful and must find salvation through belief, this presupposes that
man is immoral from birth.
While this a working definition of morality for those who share his beliefs, as he states we can
reasonably hope to find true happiness only after death, as a reward granted by God (Lenoir 16). Kant
s philosophical stance depends on religious belief in both God and an afterlife as key conceptual
features of morality. In Kant s view, God has defined morals through scripture, and adherence to God s
moral authority secures the benefits of acting morally in the form of true happiness and continuity
beyond the veil of death. Therefore, Kant s moral concept does not explain morality at the least for
polytheists, but also those who seek to act morally but are

Saint Ignatius Of Loyola Personal Writings
The book, Saint Ignatius of Loyola Personal Writings, was translated by Joseph A. Munitiz and Philip
Endean and first published in 1996. This book contains many aspects of St. Ignatius life, from his
reminiscences to his spiritual exercises. Inigo Lopez de Loyola was born in 1491 in Spain, the
youngest of 13 children. Inigo became a soldier at the age of 18 and began to refer to himself at
Ignatius. Ignatius becomes a man obsessed with his image and a life of luxury until his conversion
into a devout catholic. Saint Ignatius of Loyola Personal Writings tells the story of St. Ignatius early
life obsessed with his image, and his transformation into his ultimate obsession with living a life
dedicated to Christ, that I believe may have interfered with his growing relationship with God.
St. Ignatius lived his life in vain. He was too concerned with his outward appearance, and his
reputation among others. In battle, his legs were badly injured. Even through the excruciating pain, he
made an effort to show no outer sign of discomfort. When his legs had healed, one leg was left with an
unsightly misconfiguration from the healing of the bones. He underwent another, even more, painful
surgery to fix his outer appearance. During his long recovery, St. Ignatius read about the life of Christ
and the saints. As he learned more about the holy lives of the saints, St. Ignatius was converted and
was determined to live a life the way Christ and the saints did.

Who Is Vincent Donovan
Vincent Donovan was an out of the box thinker when he traveled to the Masai people in hopes to
spread the gospel in hopes that these people would become Christian. In this paper it will address
hindrance that Donovan faced, his views of Christology and soteriology in relation to the Christian
faith perspective, and my own views on how well I believe that Donovan portrayed Christianity.
One of the biggest hindrances for Donovan while dealing with the Masia was the culture difference in
how situations were handled. As stated by Donovan (1995) with these Africans the purpose of words
is not to establish logical truth, but to set up social relationships with others. (p. 23) Donovan goes on

He also ran the fear that if a majority of the community rejects Christianity then he would lose the
fence sitters to peer pressure to not believe in Christianity. As Donovan (1995) states A
community...will act as a unit, accepting you or rejecting you together... it is not possible or desirable
to convert the Masai as individuals, but it is possible to evangelize them as groups.
A second hindrance for Donovan was getting the Masia people to listen to his preaching of
Christianity without receiving anything for it. The Masia people were very accustomed to missionaries
bringing things in order to bribe the people to accept Christianity. He was aware of this set back from
the beginning and how this shadows the true story of Jesus and what Christianity is about at the core.
Donovan made it clear at this first meeting with the people of his true intentions while preaching.
Along the same lines of not listening to Donovan, making sure that the Masai had a mind free of
preconceptions... there is no other way to deal with the subject that is so strange to us. (Donovan,
1995). This was hard to do because of the past history of the Catholic church coming to the Masai
people. Donovan had to fight the expectations they held of his visit and reset their minds to take in the
knowledge and information that Donovan wanted to teach.
The illiteracy of the Masai people deemed to also be a very big hindrance to Donovan. He had to

Cause And Effects Of The Meiji Restoration
The Meiji Restoration provided a catapult of overhaul within Japan. During the Tokugawa era, Japan
was split amongst hundreds of feudal domains, and the emperor was little more than a symbol
compared to the rule of the bafuku government. The advent of Western dominance in the late 19th
century demonstrated the regime s vulnerability to foreign pressure, and incapability to deal with it.
The Meiji restoration aimed to modernize, strengthen government control, and achieve unity of ideas
across the nation ─ all factors of which the Tokugawa regime could not properly demonstrate.
The 1858 US Japan Treaty of Amity and Commerce wasn t approved under imperial sanction, leading
to accusations of treachery, provoking a major military crisis. The development of foreign contacts
showed the bafuku to be militarily weak and ineffective, forcing many to realize the need for
nationalization and reform. By the late 1850s, there was a growing call for sonnō (respect for the
emperor). The imperial court became a haven for bafuku opposers, particularly radical samurai from
Satsuma and Chōshū. An alliance between the two domains concerned the bafuku, leading to an
attempted military expedition to chastise the Chōshū in 1866 for its insubordination. The failed
expedition proved the bafuku no longer possessed the strength to impose its will on even a single
domain. Following the victory, anti bafuku forces abandoned their domain affiliations, instead, naming
themselves the imperial troops .

The Future Of Homelessness In Canada
This article (originally a speech) talks about how homelessness has been an issue in Canada in the past
but is also an issue Canada faces today and how the future of homelessness in its society depends on
the actions taken today. Specific information given in the article includes going back as far as 1960
with specific examples of how the Canadian government has been dealing with the issue through the

For example, the report gives statistics on how many more children live in low income families, and
how factors such as ethnicity, immigration status, disability can change the way poverty affects the
individual s life. This article is organized very well, in a sequential manner in which one can easily
find information relevant to their research by simply looking at the contents list (and the subheadings
listed under different chapters). The introduction is concise and formal, however there is not a titled
conclusion, rather the last section summarizes the points given. This report does not have a definitive
bias as the sections explain what is previously given through statistics, thus there is is not an evident
opinion (other than that poverty should be extinguished. There are not suggestions for further reading
in the report, however the website in which it was found gave suggestions of other articles related to
child poverty. The entire article has an abundance information that would be helpful to the social
issues project, specifically statistics on how it affects the quality of life of children and ways to
overcome the issue of poverty in Toronto. This report would be very helpful for those who are
researching about children living in low income families, poverty, and solutions to poverty. There are
some limitations within the article for example data collection, especially because there is not official
poverty line. More information on data limitations are given in the appendix. The Hidden Epidemic
will contribute to my project by helping to narrow which subdivision of poverty to focus on and to
further understand how poverty transpires in Canada s most well known

The aim of this early conciliation is to encourage as many cases as possible to settle compromising the
claim through a settlement agreement (previously called a compromise agreement ) an agreement
achieved through Acas conciliation (a COT3 ). Appendix 3 is an early conciliation Flow Chart
(ACAS)
If differences cannot be resolved an ET1 can be submitted to the tribunal with the relevant fee. The
claim is then logged (by the claimant) and a copy is sent to Acas and to the employer (respondent),
along with an ET3 form. The employer has 28 days to complete and return the response form to the
Tribunal. If the claim form is not returned on time a default judgment may be entered and the
respondent will not be permitted to defend the claim. The time limit for a submission is within 3
months of the date of termination of employment, certain clams such as redundancy have a 6 month
limit
Once the tribunal has made a decision, an award can be given. This can include compensation,
payment of wages or any money that is due to the employee. Reinstatement and re engagement are
also a choice but both of these are very rare. Judgment may not always be given on the day of the
hearing.

Rhetorical Analysis Of Abraham Lincoln s The Gettysburg...
In the nineteenth century, the United States of America existed as two separate entities at war with one
another. Because the founding fathers left a pressing matter unaddressed and the government
incomplete, the country they worked to establish fell into war with itself. In his speech The Gettysburg
Address, Abraham Lincoln discusses the goals of the founding fathers in establishing the United
States. He implies another meaning to these goals to encourage the Union troops, those fighting to
abolish slavery, to continue the fight. He also challenges them to honor their fellow soldiers who
sacrificed their lives by continuing to fight. Lincoln utilizes the mission of the founding fathers and
the recent fallen to encourage the unification of the nation. To establish the importance of unity,
Lincoln reemphasizes the purpose of founding the nation; however, he implies a different meaning. In
the context of the speech, Lincoln is encouraging the Union s troops to continue the fight for a united
nation; the goal of the Union is to abolish slavery and establish equal rights. Lincoln redefines the
founding father s statement that all men are created equal, (Lincoln, 2014, p. 115). He implies that this
definition includes all men no matter the race, while the original purpose only included white men.
The war that tore apart the nation was because of racial inequality. This definition aligns with the
mission of the Union. Without an understanding of some form, the nation the founding fathers brought
forth on this continent...conceived in Liberty, (Lincoln, 2014, p. 115) would cease to exist. Liberty
means that nothing oppresses the nation; however, unequal rights for the citizens restricts this liberty.
Therefore, the nation the founding fathers envisioned cannot exist while slavery exists. By reiterating
and refocusing the mission of the founding fathers, Lincoln explains the reason for unification.
Lincoln expands on the significance of the sacrifices the citizens recently made for the betterment of
the nation. Lincoln gives The Gettysburg Address standing on the battlefield soldiers died on to
dedicate the grounds as a memorial to them and to honor the sacrifices they made. While remembering
the fallen, he

Persuasive Essay On Climbing
Why do you climb? Four words; four syllables; one question that I ve heard a countless number of
times; one question that I never knew how to answer. (Antithesis) Climbing is a sport that is
performed in most corners of the world; it s objective is to develop and carry out a method of
ascending a rock face, be it with tools, by hand, with protection, or without. For most people, it is a
game to be played for the hell of it; for the majority, it is a social environment that connects people of
all ethnicities and ages; for some, it s a direct connection to the beauty of the outdoors; for few, it s a
way of acquainting oneself with fear; for a minority, it is a masochistic drive; and for me, it is all of
the above. Although all of these general reasons motivate climbers in their everyday ambitions, the
source of their passion is as obscure as the virgin stone itself. From what I ve learned, there are
endless ways to answer this age old question, but three of them stood out the most: to find purpose, to
find community, and to find what is elusive. With death being an inevitable conclusion to life, it can
be said that the true value of a life is not determined by how long it was lived or what was done during
its time, but from what it left behind. In a sport of pushing the physical and psychological boundaries,
climbers seek recognition in their achievements, whether it is by finding a new climb that will
measure its test of time or being the first to climb a daunting line

Aristotle and Plato are both philosophers and thinkers of...
Aristotle and Plato are both philosophers and thinkers of the Greek tradition but they each came to
very different conclusions about the nature of divinity. Plato s god was subordinate to the ever
important forms while Aristotle s god was selfish. Combined together each of their different
philosophies could probably come pretty close to the ideas of the great monotheistic religions of
today. Although they belong to different philosophical traditions both Plato and Aristotle share many
of the same basic ideas even though their conclusions and ends tend to differ quite a bit from one
another. The main idea which sets apart the thoughts of Plato and Aristotle is that of the forms, which
must be explained to understand Plato s divinity. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Another one of Plato s divinities would be the Demiurge or craftsman god which Plato speaks of in
Timaeus. Plato charged this god with the creation of the entire universe. Although the Demiurge is not
higher than the forms Plato still credits the craftsman god with bringing order to the universe and
endowing humans with immortal and intelligent souls. Second to the Demiurge would be lesser gods
which encapsulate the planets in spheres and account for their eternal movement. In summation, Plato
s idea of a god is anything that is immutable, intelligent, and immortal. It is easy to see, then, why
Plato seems to see divinities seemingly everywhere in the universe.
Aristotle has a much different conception of divinity than Plato. His highest divinity is not the forms
but something which he refers to as the unmoved mover, first mover, or prime mover. This prime
mover is the common source of all substance, movement, and change in the universe and it has three
characteristics: it is composed of pure actuality, has no physical matter, and is eternal. It is necessary
for the unmoved mover to be all of these things because his eternality is what allows the universe to be
eternal as well:
It will be no use, then, to assume everlasting substances, as believers in the Forms do, unless these
include some principle capable of initiating change. And even this, or some other type of substance
apart from the Forms, is not sufficient; for if it

Magic Merlyn Moment Analysis
Magic Merlyn Moment #1 Rough Draft
The first Magic and Merlyn Moment started out with the Wart bored on a rainy, cold, wet evening.
Everyone was annoyed with him, and they were tired of him moping around, so the Wart decided to
head to the toweroom, where he knew to find his teacher. Merlyn was busy knitting a skull cap when
the Wart expressed his boredom and wanting to become a bird. Merlyn, who was also in a mood, said
that if you were smarter, you would know that birds cannot fly in the rain. Then, the Wart said he
could be a hawk in Hob s mews, which quickly turned into pleading and begging.`He started asking
many questions about birds, like if they can talk. Later on, when the Wart asked he can begin, Merlyn
said now as Hob had ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
After much difficulty, the Wart was turned into a merlin and then warned of Cully. After first when the
Wart entered the mews, everyone was quiet, but he was eventually told to speak. After receiving the
help of Balan(another bird), the Wart said that he is a merlin. Cully then asked what branch he is from,
and the Wart said he is from the Forest Sauvage branch. Balan then helped again by explaining to
cully that the Wart meant a cadet branch. The Wart s next question was What is a Beast of the Foot?
and luckily Wart knew the answer because of his first rate education. He was then asked two more
questions before moving on to the next step, which was to get sworn in. However, the priest ate the
tirings, so they moved on to the ordeal. The Wart was hesitant towards it, as he had been warned not to
go near Cully, but he had to. After the hymn, the Wart was told to go stand next to Cully, as the others
rang a bell thrice. Cully warned the Wart not to come near him, as it would be too hard for him to not
eat the Wart. After the bell rang twice, they were both impatient and nervous, but the Wart s quick
thinking saved his life. The Wart told Colonel Cully that there was a cat behind him so

  • 2. What Is The Evil In Lord Of The Flies There is darkness inside everyone. Evil, malice, wickedness. Society attempts to stomp out these innate traits. In his critically acclaimed novel, Lord of the Flies, William Golding explores what happens to a person when the pressures of society are removed. A group of British boys are stranded on an island without any adults. They form a society that slowly falls apart as half of the boys, led by Jack, are drawn into the savage life accepted on the island. Ralph s group attempts to remain civil, but their success is questionable. Jack s group becomes more and more brutal and savage, and three of the boys die. Golding wrote this book as an allegory for the psychoanalytic theory of the personality, the Id, Ego, and Superego. The Id is the evil part, driven by base instincts and desires. The Superego strives for morality and rules, and the Ego attempts to balance the two out. Golding strongly believed that humans at their most base level are evil, a theory developed through his life experiences. Golding fought in WW II, and is quoted saying World War II was the turning point for me. I began to see what people were capable of doing. ( William Golding 3) Golding believed that without society people would revert entirely to the Id, foregoing the Superego. He expressed this message in Lord of the Flies by characterizing different boys as the different parts of the personality. He explored what happens to the personality through the development of these characters. Golding ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Educational Philosophies Influence Curriculum From The... Abstract Educational philosophies influence curriculum from the establishment of the American school systems. The five major philosophies that have influence American education are: 1) Idealism, 2) Essentialism, 3) Perennialism, 4) Progressivism, and 5) Experimentalism. Idealism, Essentialism, and Perennialism are all teacher based philosophies putting the teacher at the core of the educational experience, with students being passive members of the classroom. In contrast, Progressivism and Experimentalism are student centered philosophies that focus on the child and their contribution and participation in the formation of classroom experiences, using teachers as guides to help students in their educational development. Although the philosophies differ, many of them define curriculum as a encompassing unit of goals, methods, materials and assessment. Introduction Since the establishment of America s first schools, the American people have disagreed not only about what the purpose of school is, but also about what schools should teach. Initially schools were supposed to prepare men to vote intelligently and prepare women to train their sons properly. Moral training based on the Protestant Bible would produce virtuous, well behaved citizens [who knew not only] the three R s but [also] the general principles of law, commerce, money, and government (Kaestle, 1983, p. 5). During the 1780 s educational theorists began calling for reform and in 1785 Massachusetts law ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The majority of companies use these programs to create a positive work environment, improve employee morale, and motivate high performance. Research suggests that when designed and implemented properly, reward and recognition positively affects an organization s bottom line. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Recently published literature reveals that there are several key components of any effective reward and recognition program. Multiple authors argue that programs missing any one of these key components will, at best, fail to engage employees, and at worst alienate employees. In fact, according to Bob Nelson, the author of 1001 Ways to Reward Employees, some forms of awards can hurt organizations by promoting a culture of entitlement. Additional research reveals that programs that are impersonal or reward too few people may alienate employees. These key 14,15,16 components and case examples of their influence are detailed below: 17 SSMART REWARDS Jim Brintnall, author of What Make a Good Recognition Reward?, uses the acronym SSMART to advise employers how to design an effective program. During this time, the defense and prosecution can file pretrial motions to suppress evidence due to faulty police line ups, coerced confessions, and illegal search and seizures. Once all pretrial motions are filed, the process moves to the trial stage. The trial stage is where the case, from the prosecution and defense, is presented to the jury for their deliberation of the verdict. During the motions stage of the process, discussed about, Mr. Blackbeard s defense will submit motions regarding the clothing found in the alcove, the rifle, the handbag, canister containing the quarters, and the bloody towel. The defense will argue that the police did not have a warrant to search Mr. Blackbeard s sleeping quarters and that he has the right to expect privacy in the area where he was sleep and kept his belongings. This would be a violation of the Fourth Amendment, which is the right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, paper, and effects, against unreasonable search and seizures, shall not be violated... . The defense will argue that the police did not have consent, nor probable cause to search the vehicle which resulted in the discovery of Ms. Lovely s purse, canister containing quarters, and the bloody towel. • 6. Is Mayella Ewell Powerful Or Powerful Analysis Is Mayella ewell powerful? That is the question that is asked and must be answered.Throughout the story To kill a mockingbird Mayella shows some glimpses of power but not enough to say she is powerful. For example in the beginning she shows that she can not even control her home life so how can she be powerful. Also she shows that she is just too poor for her to have power. Now in the next three paragraphs I will explain my thinking on why I believe Mayella is not powerful. In the first paragraph I will explain why and how I believe Mayella Ewell is not powerful, with the use of class.First off I would like to show you one of my biggest reasons for believing Mayella is not powerful Maycombs Ewells lived behind the town garbage dump in what used to be a negro cabin . (DBQ:Is mayella Ewell powerful?13)The second reason I believe Mayella Ewell is not powerful while using class for my examples is that longs as he keeps on callin me ma am and sayin miss Mayella.I don t hafta take his sass, I ain t called upon to take it (DBQ: Is Mayella Ewell powerful?.17). Now you can see even in her dialect she does not know or have class, you can also tell by the way she is not used to being called ma am and miss Mayella.Next I will show how much of a lower class the Ewells are in Mayella Ewell must have the loneliest person in the world...; white people wouldn t have anything to do with her because she lived among pigs (DBQ:Is mayella Ewell powerful 21).The final reason I believe Mayella ... The Butler Act made it illegal to teach about religions from the textbooks. This included that teachers as any school were allowed to teach and about the science of evolution. The conflicts that the Butler Act made were between tradition and modernity. This act was worrying parents that it would change, and make a big effect for their children s education. These are reasons why people cared about the Butler Act. It also questioned the simple debate between evolution and creation. In the majority of sports that are physical and require a lot of contact that could potentially cause injuries. Some people don t understand that the helmet the players wear don t always prevent the athletes from getting concussions or the fracture of your skull. You can get a concussion by having your brain constantly hit your skull. The NFL should take more necessary precautions every time a player suffers from damage. There is are diseases called CTE which means chronic traumatic encephalopathy players get playing that turn into medical bills need to be paid for by the NFL because players often are pressured to ignore the symptoms of a concussion and go back out to play. Players should be aware of the consequences and risk that can occur when they make these decisions. In the case of Ted this very issue caused a lot of turmoil for him. He grew up thinking that his grandparents were his parents and that is sister was his mother. I think that this was very hard for him to accept and he felt like he could not trust anyone. Researchers have supported the psychodynamic theory by claiming that people with disorder have been subjected to family violence and parental conflict or divorce. Ted s grandfather was said to be violent towards Ted and his other siblings. I believe that Ted s environment played a huge role in his developing antisocial disorder and that these factors would be listed under axis IV of the DSM IV TR. Michael Packard who was an editor for DSM IV s criteria developed a way to determining the GAF or the Global Assessment Functioning. He suggests moving up and down the scale until the person s status at that moment is described. The University s Lick Observatory, Planet Hunter Team As a member that is part of the UC s Lick Observatory Planet Hunter Team, I have found a possible planetary system that may contain a planet. From my further research, I discovered that the planet may support life, such as bacteria and plants. After confirming with the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence Institute about intelligent life, I eventually decided to want to discuss intelligent life through a scientific process. I will use the Drake Equation to give us the possibility that intelligent life can emit signals to reveal any existence. The equation is given as N= R* x fp x ne x fl x fi x fc x L. The calculations of each variables will help me understand what is being contributed into calculating the chance of any signals being detected and the calculated result will determined the conclusion of intelligent life existing. Nevertheless, this is just an estimation for the possibility of any life as the Drake Equation may or may not be as reliable as we may expect it to be. Calculations Step 1. I know that there are 7 new stars formed yearly in the galaxy, the number of stars is represented by R*. This is the annual rate of star formation that is adaptable for any life. So R* will equal 7 new stars formed every year. R* = 7 new stars formed every year Step 2. There is a 100% chance that if there are stars, then there has to exist planetary systems. So, R* = 7 new stars annually and fp = 1/1 relationship between stars and planetary systems or 1. Next, I take 7 ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Personally, ever since I was young, I was kind of obligated to attend Texas Tech by my relatives. Being that I was born in the small town of Brownfield, Texas and most of my family is from there, they made frequent trips to Lubbock being that it was only forty five minutes away. Thus, they fell in love with the school, their sports teams, and the environment. I on the other hand, hadn t experienced all this due to the fact that I grew up in Amarillo, Texas. Whether it is used to fuel your car, a plane, to heat your home, or even if it is just used inside products, like plastic that we use daily, oil plays a role in all of our lives. Last year, in 2015, an extreme decline in gas prices swept the United States. For example, oil prices have decreased to less than $30 a barrel which is the lowest it has ever been in 12 years. There are many factors that can contribute to this sudden decline in gas prices, but their are three that are the most relevant. These include, the recent advancements in other fuel sources, the changes in the leading oil suppliers of the world, and the simple economic concept of supply and demand. These three ideas are all important in contributing to the fall of gas prices. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This eliminates the need for oil to heat your home. Another alternative fuel source are hybrid cars. Hybrid cars are a mix of gas and electricty but still cuts down the need for oil substantially. He has an extensive educational background and has a strong political resume to match. In the book Reading Obama by James Kloppenberg, Kloppenberg not only applauded President Obama s educational journey as a means to developing the necessary skills to be a leader, but also viewed Obama as an intellectual and philosophical president which he believes are unique characteristics only present in a minority of American historians. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Pragmatism deals with a straight forward way of thinking and is centered on solving problems. As stated in lecture eight, pragmatists promoted a philosophy of relativism not universalism (Professor Garcia Lecture 8). This means that, in terms of pragmatism, one does what they consider is essential instead of following a natural law based upon philosophical principles and morality. In any matter, the truth as to what the right thing to do is relative to the situation and there is not a universally correct answer for all eternity. What is considered right changes over the years and law is meant to be changed as economic and political situations vary. The political philosophy of pragmatism helps Kloppenberg support his argument that Obama is more than just intelligent, that he is an intellectual. Kloppenberg states that, Obama is also very much an intellectual along with being a politician (Kloppenberg). He stresses that unlike other Presidents who were extremely intelligent, President Obama is able to interrogate his own convictions to place them in a broader cultural and historical context by imaginatively scrutinizing them from a position centuries in the future without abandoning them (Kloppenberg). Other Presidents, such as Richard Nixon, were considered extremely intelligent in Kloppenberg s opinion; however, he believed that was a result of opportunism and the goal of career advancement. This species is a part of the grass family, usually hollow and green with yellow knots. They are around 6 13 feet tall and are found in wetlands and ditches. There are three lineages created of the common reed, one, the North American lineage. Invasive species have negative, detrimental effects on the ecosystems and environments. In the article, Phragmites, Invasions Harm Riparian Property Values, studies are showing that the common reed is a harmful plant. For example, they block parts of the sidewalks and restrict the access to water, such as on lakes or ponds. For instance, residents pay excessive amounts of money to live on lakes, that offer all the water activities and a pretty view in general, but when the invasive species intrude they block the views and access to the water. In result, it ends up leaving these places unable to manage. The other effect they leave is with sidewalks. They usually spread from ditches to all over the sidewalks and such. Therefore, they ... But how do you write about a player with Curry s peculiar skillset? Badly, for the most part. At some point over the last year, the phrase it s a cliché to call these video game numbers appeared on an NBC Sports page. • 20. Pop Culture And Its Effect On Society Introduction Popular culture has manifested itself in a number of ways. Currently, the most commonly used method of spreading and exchanging opinions, ideas, art, and other concepts is through the internet. Never before has it been so easy to shed light on a person or an idea, giving it levels of popularity that were considered inconceivable in ages past. In many circumstances the way people are portrayed through pop culture is most likely how they were perceived by the bulk of people. Pop/culture serves as a way to connect people; help them relate to one another over shared opinions and interests. It was and is the representative of the majority. But what of the times before the internet? How was pop culture expressed in a time when people did not have the ability to express their thoughts and opinions with millions at a time almost instantaneously? Theatre is one of the most time honored means of entertainment. Before television and computers and the internet, actors would don a costume and tell act for masses of people. It was a form of storytelling that was not limited to the literate or rich or the scholars, but could be enjoyed by anyone form any economic background. This development has been particularly true in both the United States and Israel, where the position of women in society has moved forward from archaic ideals towards building a foundation of gender equality. This foundation has been based on the belief that individuals in society are entitled to human dignity and liberty, entitling them equal opportunities in life. Health professionals were enlightened by psychoanalysis to the inner workings of the human mind, which were previously inexplicable (Beystehner, K.M., n.d.). Sigmund Freud s research indicated that our behavior is influenced by id, ego and superego, or what he termed structure of personality (nthdimension, 2010). The id is present at birth and is the most basic and primitive part of our personality. Id s drive is instinctual and can be described as having the life instinct named Eros and the death instinct named Thanatos. Id is responsible for the basic, instinctual needs of survival like hunger and thirst. Ego is developed to compromise between the instinctual desire driven Id and the external expectations of parents and society. Superego is developed when a child is about 5 years old and is the internalization of the expectations of parents and society that aides them to evaluate their behaviors for what s acceptable or not acceptable. A more recent educational reform program is the concept of school choice. Instead of being forced to attend the school chosen by the local district students would receive vouchers. Students would be able to take their voucher and apply the funds normally allocated to them at any school. Parents would be able to decide which school is the best for their children and students that would normally be trapped in a low performing school could instead attend a different school. A problem with vouchers is that private schools are allowed to approve if a student can attend. The students that could benefit the most from moving to a private school could be refused admittance. Another issue is that higher income families would be more likely to use this program than lower income families that do not have the same values in education. Finally school vouchers would be taking money away from the public school system which would reduce the quality of education that the public schools could provide. It was assumed by labour leaders that Asian workers were impossible to organize, and therefore felt they had no choice but to demand exclusionary policies, regardless of the Asian involvement in labour militancy which closely aligned with the goals of Canadian labour unions (Goutor, 2007, 554). Helicobacter Pylori Research Paper Helicobacter Pylori at Tight Junctions Prior to the isolation of Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori} by Robin Warren and Barry Marshall in 1982, it was theorized that peptic ulceration, an ailment first described in 1857 by William Brinton, stemmed from poor diet, tobacco use, and stress due to the failure to definitively identify a causative agent as well as the belief that the inhospitable environment within the human stomach resulted in its sterility (Tanenbaum 2005). Because physicians were ignorant to the existence of H. pylori, individuals suffering from peptic ulcerations underwent ineffective treatments for over a century. • 35. Photosynthesis Is The Conversion Of Light Energy Essay Photosynthesis is the conversion of light energy to chemical energy. There are many different factors that can affect the rate of photosynthesis, those being light intensity, the temperature of the water, the amount of carbon dioxide in the water, and the color of the light. In this experiment we chose to alter the color of light that was used in the process involving the aquatic plant Elodea while maintaining the other 3 factors. This experiment was conducted to see how much of an effect the color of the light played in the amount of carbon dioxide produced in the process of photosynthesis. We measured the amount of NaOH that was needed to color the water pink and then converted the net difference of drops into the net volume of carbon dioxide that was produced or consumed. The results showed that there was not a significant difference in the amount of carbon dioxide produced when using a standard regular colored light bulb compared to a green light bulb. And human nature too is like the water: it doesn t chose between good and evil any more than water chooses between east and west. Proponents of an absolute definition of morals suggest that there is a defined right and wrong and that acting in a way that is virtuous or immoral, respectively, determines one s fate in the afterlife. This is not universal, as the behaviors deemed as moral depend on religious custom, and both the benefits and penalties of adhering to them require a shared belief. One such scholar, Immanuel Kant believed the moral law must carry with it absolute necessity (Kant 2). A contemporary Christian viewpoint is that a practicing Christian is inherently sinful and must find salvation through belief, this presupposes that man is immoral from birth. While this a working definition of morality for those who share his beliefs, as he states we can reasonably hope to find true happiness only after death, as a reward granted by God (Lenoir 16). Kant s philosophical stance depends on religious belief in both God and an afterlife as key conceptual features of morality. In Kant s view, God has defined morals through scripture, and adherence to God s moral authority secures the benefits of acting morally in the form of true happiness and continuity beyond the veil of death. • 40. Who Is Vincent Donovan Vincent Donovan was an out of the box thinker when he traveled to the Masai people in hopes to spread the gospel in hopes that these people would become Christian. In this paper it will address hindrance that Donovan faced, his views of Christology and soteriology in relation to the Christian faith perspective, and my own views on how well I believe that Donovan portrayed Christianity. One of the biggest hindrances for Donovan while dealing with the Masia was the culture difference in how situations were handled. As stated by Donovan (1995) with these Africans the purpose of words is not to establish logical truth, but to set up social relationships with others. (p. 23) Donovan goes on to explain a story where in Masia culture they are ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He also ran the fear that if a majority of the community rejects Christianity then he would lose the fence sitters to peer pressure to not believe in Christianity. As Donovan (1995) states A community...will act as a unit, accepting you or rejecting you together... it is not possible or desirable to convert the Masai as individuals, but it is possible to evangelize them as groups. A second hindrance for Donovan was getting the Masia people to listen to his preaching of Christianity without receiving anything for it. The Masia people were very accustomed to missionaries bringing things in order to bribe the people to accept Christianity. He was aware of this set back from the beginning and how this shadows the true story of Jesus and what Christianity is about at the core. Donovan made it clear at this first meeting with the people of his true intentions while preaching. Along the same lines of not listening to Donovan, making sure that the Masai had a mind free of preconceptions... there is no other way to deal with the subject that is so strange to us. (Donovan, 1995). This was hard to do because of the past history of the Catholic church coming to the Masai people. Donovan had to fight the expectations they held of his visit and reset their minds to take in the knowledge and information that Donovan wanted to teach. The illiteracy of the Masai people deemed to also be a very big hindrance to Donovan. He had to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Developmental Disabilities Essay Developmental Disabilities Amy Giles Axia College of University of Phoenix HHS 325 Health and Human Service in the U.S. David Sainio December 10, 2006 Developmental Disabilities Living with disabilities on a daily basis can be more difficult then some realize. Many people who are born with developmental disabilities start their education and therapy at a very young age and there are also those people who have been diagnosed with a disability sometime during their lifetime. On a more personal level my only sister is 23 years old and she is down syndrome. She graduated from high school almost 2 years ago and both myself and my mother are having an extremely hard time finding some sort of service or even a facility that can help my sister continue to learn independence as well as continue some type of education. We have tried everything from the local community college, which turned her down because she isn t able to read at an 8th grade level, to the El Paso Mental Health and Mental Retardation Center, who wouldn t help her because she didn t need to be institutionalized. So the problem here is that regardless of the governments regulations purposes and policies, there still isn t enough being done to help people with developmental disabilities lead a somewhat normal life or to continue an education so that they are able to fit into the normal community, as well as not sit at home for the rest of their life with no social interaction. In my personal situation, it would have helped out tremendously if after my sister graduated from high school, we were given some sort of an idea of what she could do from then on. One thing is for sure my sister will never be put in an institution, she will always have someone to live with and take care of her, but at the same time ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 42. Cause And Effects Of The Meiji Restoration The Meiji Restoration provided a catapult of overhaul within Japan. During the Tokugawa era, Japan was split amongst hundreds of feudal domains, and the emperor was little more than a symbol compared to the rule of the bafuku government. The advent of Western dominance in the late 19th century demonstrated the regime s vulnerability to foreign pressure, and incapability to deal with it. The Meiji restoration aimed to modernize, strengthen government control, and achieve unity of ideas across the nation ─ all factors of which the Tokugawa regime could not properly demonstrate. The 1858 US Japan Treaty of Amity and Commerce wasn t approved under imperial sanction, leading to accusations of treachery, provoking a major military crisis. The development of foreign contacts showed the bafuku to be militarily weak and ineffective, forcing many to realize the need for nationalization and reform. By the late 1850s, there was a growing call for sonnō (respect for the emperor). The imperial court became a haven for bafuku opposers, particularly radical samurai from Satsuma and Chōshū. An alliance between the two domains concerned the bafuku, leading to an attempted military expedition to chastise the Chōshū in 1866 for its insubordination. The failed expedition proved the bafuku no longer possessed the strength to impose its will on even a single domain. Following the victory, anti bafuku forces abandoned their domain affiliations, instead, naming themselves the imperial troops . ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 43. The Future Of Homelessness In Canada This article (originally a speech) talks about how homelessness has been an issue in Canada in the past but is also an issue Canada faces today and how the future of homelessness in its society depends on the actions taken today. Specific information given in the article includes going back as far as 1960 with specific examples of how the Canadian government has been dealing with the issue through the ages. Giving direct quotes from government documents and speeches to statistics, it is divided to into three main categories: past, present, and future (and further going into sub categories from there). Relevant issues are discussed such as how some societal issues and global affairs affect the wealth of Canada and how this can turn into poverty. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This article is organized very well, in a sequential manner in which one can easily find information relevant to their research by simply looking at the contents list (and the subheadings listed under different chapters). The introduction is concise and formal, however there is not a titled conclusion, rather the last section summarizes the points given. This report does not have a definitive bias as the sections explain what is previously given through statistics, thus there is is not an evident opinion (other than that poverty should be extinguished. There are not suggestions for further reading in the report, however the website in which it was found gave suggestions of other articles related to child poverty. The entire article has an abundance information that would be helpful to the social issues project, specifically statistics on how it affects the quality of life of children and ways to overcome the issue of poverty in Toronto. This report would be very helpful for those who are researching about children living in low income families, poverty, and solutions to poverty. There are some limitations within the article for example data collection, especially because there is not official poverty line. More information on data limitations are given in the appendix. • 46. Rhetorical Analysis Of Abraham Lincoln s The Gettysburg... In the nineteenth century, the United States of America existed as two separate entities at war with one another. Because the founding fathers left a pressing matter unaddressed and the government incomplete, the country they worked to establish fell into war with itself. In his speech The Gettysburg Address, Abraham Lincoln discusses the goals of the founding fathers in establishing the United States. He implies another meaning to these goals to encourage the Union troops, those fighting to abolish slavery, to continue the fight. He also challenges them to honor their fellow soldiers who sacrificed their lives by continuing to fight. Lincoln utilizes the mission of the founding fathers and the recent fallen to encourage the unification of the nation. To establish the importance of unity, Lincoln reemphasizes the purpose of founding the nation; however, he implies a different meaning. In the context of the speech, Lincoln is encouraging the Union s troops to continue the fight for a united nation; the goal of the Union is to abolish slavery and establish equal rights. Lincoln redefines the founding father s statement that all men are created equal, (Lincoln, 2014, p. 115). He implies that this definition includes all men no matter the race, while the original purpose only included white men. The war that tore apart the nation was because of racial inequality. This definition aligns with the mission of the Union. Without an understanding of some form, the nation the founding fathers brought forth on this continent...conceived in Liberty, (Lincoln, 2014, p. 115) would cease to exist. Liberty means that nothing oppresses the nation; however, unequal rights for the citizens restricts this liberty. Therefore, the nation the founding fathers envisioned cannot exist while slavery exists. By reiterating and refocusing the mission of the founding fathers, Lincoln explains the reason for unification. Lincoln expands on the significance of the sacrifices the citizens recently made for the betterment of the nation. Lincoln gives The Gettysburg Address standing on the battlefield soldiers died on to dedicate the grounds as a memorial to them and to honor the sacrifices they made. • 49. Persuasive Essay On Climbing Why do you climb? Four words; four syllables; one question that I ve heard a countless number of times; one question that I never knew how to answer. (Antithesis) Climbing is a sport that is performed in most corners of the world; it s objective is to develop and carry out a method of ascending a rock face, be it with tools, by hand, with protection, or without. For most people, it is a game to be played for the hell of it; for the majority, it is a social environment that connects people of all ethnicities and ages; for some, it s a direct connection to the beauty of the outdoors; for few, it s a way of acquainting oneself with fear; for a minority, it is a masochistic drive; and for me, it is all of the above. Although all of these general reasons motivate climbers in their everyday ambitions, the source of their passion is as obscure as the virgin stone itself. From what I ve learned, there are endless ways to answer this age old question, but three of them stood out the most: to find purpose, to find community, and to find what is elusive. With death being an inevitable conclusion to life, it can be said that the true value of a life is not determined by how long it was lived or what was done during its time, but from what it left behind. In a sport of pushing the physical and psychological boundaries, climbers seek recognition in their achievements, whether it is by finding a new climb that will measure its test of time or being the first to climb a daunting line ... • 50. Aristotle and Plato are both philosophers and thinkers of... Aristotle and Plato are both philosophers and thinkers of the Greek tradition but they each came to very different conclusions about the nature of divinity. Plato s god was subordinate to the ever important forms while Aristotle s god was selfish. Combined together each of their different philosophies could probably come pretty close to the ideas of the great monotheistic religions of today. Although they belong to different philosophical traditions both Plato and Aristotle share many of the same basic ideas even though their conclusions and ends tend to differ quite a bit from one another. The main idea which sets apart the thoughts of Plato and Aristotle is that of the forms, which must be explained to understand Plato s divinity. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Another one of Plato s divinities would be the Demiurge or craftsman god which Plato speaks of in Timaeus. Plato charged this god with the creation of the entire universe. Although the Demiurge is not higher than the forms Plato still credits the craftsman god with bringing order to the universe and endowing humans with immortal and intelligent souls. Second to the Demiurge would be lesser gods which encapsulate the planets in spheres and account for their eternal movement. In summation, Plato s idea of a god is anything that is immutable, intelligent, and immortal. It is easy to see, then, why Plato seems to see divinities seemingly everywhere in the universe. Aristotle has a much different conception of divinity than Plato. His highest divinity is not the forms but something which he refers to as the unmoved mover, first mover, or prime mover. This prime mover is the common source of all substance, movement, and change in the universe and it has three characteristics: it is composed of pure actuality, has no physical matter, and is eternal. It is necessary for the unmoved mover to be all of these things because his eternality is what allows the universe to be eternal as well: It will be no use, then, to assume everlasting substances, as believers in the Forms do, unless these include some principle capable of initiating change. And even this, or some other type of substance apart from the Forms, is not sufficient; for if it ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
