The photoelectric effect refers to the emission of electrons from matter, like metals, due to the absorption of electromagnetic radiation like ultraviolet light. Study of this effect led to an understanding of the quantum nature of light and electrons. Einstein's model of the photoelectric effect results in equations relating the energy of an incident photon to the work function needed to remove an electron and the maximum kinetic energy of the emitted electron. The work function is the minimum energy needed to remove an electron, which varies for different metals.

Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.

First observed by Heinrich Hertz in 1887, the
phenomenon is also known as the Hertz effect.
Hertz observed and then showed that
electrodes illuminated with ultraviolet light
create electric sparks more easily.
3. Photoelectric Effect
The photoelectric effect refers to the emission,
or ejection, of electrons from the surface of,
generally, a metal in response to incident light.

In the photoelectric effect, electrons are emitted
from matter (metals and non-metallic
solids, liquids or gases) as a consequence of
their absorption of energy from electromagnetic
radiation of very short wavelength and
high frequency, such as ultraviolet radiation

Electrons emitted in this manner may be referred
to as photoelectrons.
The photoelectric effect requires photons with
energies from a few electronvolts to over
1 MeV in high atomic number elements.
Study of the photoelectric effect led to important
steps in understanding the quantum nature of

of the concept of wave–particle duality.
