The peritoneum is a large serous membrane that lines the abdominal cavity and covers most abdominal organs. It forms two layers - the parietal peritoneum lines the abdominal wall and diaphragm, while the visceral peritoneum attaches to underlying organs. Folds of peritoneum suspend organs and form ligaments, mesenteries, and omenta. The peritoneal cavity is divided into compartments by the transverse mesocolon, including the supramesocolic space above and inframesocolic space below. The peritoneum lines the pelvic cavity and forms pouches in the male and female pelvis.
