Newton’s laws of motion

- 2. Newton’s laws of motion FIRST LAW: A body will continue in its present state of rest or motion unless acted upon by a force. Momentum = mass x velocity = mv
- 3. SECOND LAW: The rate of change of momentum of a body is directly proportional to the applied force and takes place in the direction in which the force acts Force α change in momentum/time F α mv – mu = m(v – u) v – u = a t t t Therefore F α ma F = kma F = ma Impulse is change in momentum = mv – mu OR force x time
- 4. Equations of weightlessness Note that weight = mg When a lift is stationary and moves with a constant speed W = mg = R m = mass of the object in the lift R = Reaction of the floor of the lift on the object acting upwards. When the lift goes upwards F = R – mg = ma R = m(a + g) F = R = m(a + g)
- 5. When the lift goes downwards F = - R + mg F = mg – R = ma R = m (g – a) W = m(g – a) W = 0 when the lift descends with a = g
- 6. Newton’s 3rd law To every action there is equal and opposite reaction. Eg recoil of a gun The velocity V of a recoil is MV = - mv V = -mv/M M = Mass of the gun m = mass of bullet v = velocity of bullet V = velocity of recoil
- 7. Law of conservation of momentum The total momentum of an isolated system remains constant M1u1 + m2 u2 = m1 v1 + m2 v2 Note: v1 = v2 when 2 colliding bodies join and move with a common velocity U2 = 0 if the 2nd body is stationary U2 is stationary if the 2nd body is moving in opposite direction to the 1st body before collision.

Kinetic energy applications Collisions cn be elastic or inelastic Elastic collision is one in which both momentum and kinetic energy are conserved The K.E = ½ m1 u1 2 + ½ m2 u2 2 = ½ m1 v1 2 + ½ m2 v2 2 In inelastic collisions momentum is conserved but not K.E. In complete inelastic where the 2 impacting bodies move together with the same velocity K.E before impact = ½ m1 u1 2 + ½ m2 u2 2 K.E after impact = ½ (m1 + m2) v2
