INTRODUCTION
• A reflexes is an involuntary or automatic action
that your body does in response to something
without even to think about it.
• Normally developing newborn should respond to
certain stimuli with these reflexes.
Types of Reflexes
• General body reflexes
• Facial reflex
• Oral reflexes
General body reflexes
• Moro reflex/startle reflex
• Palmar / grasp reflex
• Planter reflex
• Walking / stepping reflex
• Limb placement reflex
• Asymmetric tonic neck reflex
• Babinski’s reflex
• Babin reflex
• Parachute reflex
Cont...
• Landau reflex
• Withdrawal reflex
• Tendon reflex
• Gallan’s reflex
• Tonic labyrinthine reflex
Facial reflexes :-
• Nasal flarring
• Blink reflex
• doll’s eye reflex
• Auditory orienting reflex
Oral reflex:-
• Rooting reflex
• Sucking reflex
• Swallowing reflex
• Gag reflex
• Cry reflex
Palmar Reflex/ Grasp Reflex
•
Stimulation
Stimulating object , such as a finger
or pencil , across the palm from the
lateral border.
Normal response
Palm is stimulated , the hand
Closes.
Age of disappearance
Both normally disappear by 3-4
months
Function
Ability to grasp object voluntary
Planter / Graps reflex
Stimulation
Pacing object or finger beneath
the toes
Normal responses
causes curling of toes around the
object
Disappearence
age
Disappeared in the 8 month of
life
Function
Ability to stand with feet flat
on surface , balance reaction
Landau reflex
Stimulation
Suspended in prone position with
examiner hand under the
abdomen
Normal responses
He respone by extension of
head , trunk and hips.
( superman appearance)
Disappearence
age
Apperas approx. 3 month
Disappeared at 12 to 24 month of
life
Function
Absence of reflex occurs in
hypertonia , hypotenia or
mental abnormality.
Parachute reflex
Stimulation
Elicited by holding the child in ventral
suspension and suddenly lowering
him to the couch.
Normal responses
Arms extend as a defensive
reaction
Disappearence
age
Appear at 6-9 month
Disappeared approx. 9-10 month
Function
Absence of reflex in children
with cerebral palsy.
Galant’s reflex
•
Stimulation
Holding the child in ventral
suspension or placed in prone
position and running finger down
in paravertebral area on
One side
Normal responses
Swiming of pelvic towards
stimulated side
Disappearence
age
Appear at birth
Disappeared approx. 1 year
Function
Used for mapping sensory
level of trunk
Blink reflex
•
Stimulation
When we expose the eye of
neonates to the bright light
or Approach of any objects
towards eye.
Normal responses
Responed neonates that protect
The eye by rapid closure of
The eyelid.
Disappearence
age
Appear at birth
Not Disappeared
Function
To protect the eye from
foreign bodies and bright
light and no cerebral
depression, contraction of
appropriate muscle
Doll’s eye reflex
•
Stimulation
When we turn the neonates head
to right and left side , the eye do
not adjust immediately to the new
position of the head.
Normal responses
Responed they leg behind , same
like a doll’s eye.
Disappearence
age
Appear at birth
Disappeared at 3-4 month
Function
Failure of this reflex to appear
indicates a cerebral lesion.
Glabellar reflex
•
Stimulation
When we tap the glabella ( the
meeting point of forehead and nose).
Normal responses
Responed they the neonates react
by closure of eye are blinking .
Disappearence
age
Appear at birth
Not Disappeared
Conclusion :-
• Appropriate knowledge of reflexes will help to :-
Through the reflex to idetify whether the child is
developing normal or not.
• To identify whether development is going on at
proper rate or not.
Thank you......
