Navic is India's indigenous regional satellite navigation system consisting of 7 satellites. It was developed by ISRO to provide real-time positioning and timing services over India and 1500km around it. The first satellite was launched in 2013 and the full constellation was completed in 2016, providing open access standard positioning as well as encrypted restricted services. Navic aims to aid sectors like disaster management, defense, and transportation with accurate location services independent of other global systems.

2. INTRODUCTION
• The Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System or IRNSS.
• NAVIC is an autonomous regional satellite navigation system
developed by India.
• Navic means “sailor” or “navigator “ in sanskrit ,Hindi and many
other indian languages .
• Navic stands for navigation with indian constellation .
• Used to provide accurate real-time positioning and timing services
over india and the region extending to 1500km (930miles) around
India.
• It consists of a constellation of 3 satellites in geostationary
orbit(GEO),4 satellites in geosynchronous orbit(GSO)

3.  NAVIC is placed approximately 36000km (22000miles) altitude
above the earth surface .
 Indian govt. approved this project in may 2006, with the
intention of being completed and implemented by 28 April 2016
 Navic will provide two levels of service , the standard
positioning service(SPS) for general open use and a restricted
service (an encrypted one) for authorized users(including the
military) .

5. DEVELOPMENT
• As part of the project, the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) opened a
new satellite navigation center within the campus of ISRO Deep Space
Network (DSN) at Byalalu, in Karnataka on 28 May 2013.
• A network of 21 ranging stations located across the country will provide data
for the orbital determination of the satellites and monitoring of the navigation
signal.
• Missile targeting could be an important military application for the
constellation.
• The total cost of the project is expected to be ₹1,420 crore (US$211million).
• the cost of the ground segment being ₹300 crore (US$45 million). Each
satellites costing ₹150 crore (US$22 million)

6. TIME-FRAME
• In April 2010,india planned to launch satellites for every 6 months so
that NAVIC would be functional in 2015.but it was delayed and India
launched 3 satellites in supplement to it.
• Seven satellites with the prefix "IRNSS-1" will constitute the space
segment of the IRNSS.
• IRNSS-1A , the first of the seven satellites, was launched on 1 July
2013.
• IRNSS-1B was launched on 4 April 2014 on board the PSLV-C24 rocket.
The satellite has been placed in geosynchronous orbit.
• IRNSS-1C was launched on 16 October 2014, IRNSS-1D on 28 March
2015.
• IRNSS-1E on 20 January 2016,IRNSS-1F on 10 March 2016 and IRNSS-
1G was launched on 28 April 2016.

7. DESCRIPTION
• Navic consists of a constellation of 7 satellites, 3
satellites are located in geostationary orbit (GEO)at
32.5˚ east, 83° East, and 131.5° East longitude. The
other four are inclined geosynchronous orbit (GSO).
• Two of the GSOs cross the equator at 55° East and two
at 111.75° East.
• various ground-based systems will control, track
orbits, check integration and send radio signals to the
satellites.
• The land-based Master Control Center (MCC) will run
navigational software.

8. • Navic consists of two services namely,
• Standard positioning service(SPS)
• Precision service(an encrypted one)
• Both will be carried on L5 (1176.45 MHZ) and
S-BAND (2492.028 MHZ).
• SPS signal will be modulated by 1MHZ BPSK
signal
• The precision service will use BOC(5,2)

9. • Navigation signals themselves would be
transmitted in the S-BAND frequency(2-4 GHZ)
and use phased array antenna.
• The satellites approximately weigh1,330 kg and
their solar panels generates 1400w.
• The Navic provides absolute position accuracy of
better than 10m in Indian land mass and 20m in
Indian ocean as well as region extending
approximately 1500 km around India.

10. SATELLITES
 IRNSS-1A
• It was built at ISRO Satellite Centre, Bangalore, costing ₹125 crore (US$19
million).
• It has a lift-off mass of 1380 kg, and carries a navigation payload and a C-
band ranging transponder, which operates in L5 band (1176.45MHZ)
• The satellite was launched on-board PSLV-C22 on 1 July 2013 from
the SatishDhawan Space Centre at Sriharikota.
 IRNSS-1B
• Satellite IRNSS-1B was placed in geosynchronous orbit on 4 April
2014 aboard the PSLV-C24 rocket from Satish Dhawan Space
Centre, Sriharikota.
• The satellite will provide navigation, tracking and mapping services.

11. • The IRNSS-1B satellite weighs 1,432 kg and has two payloads: a navigation
payload and CDMA .
 IRNSS-1C
• Satellite IRNSS-1C was placed in geostationary orbit on 16 October 2014
aboard PSLV -C26 from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre, Sriharikota.
• IRNSS-1C satellite has two payloads: a navigation payload and CDMA
ranging payload
• The design of the payload makes the IRNSS system inter-operable and
compatible with Global Positioning System (GPS) and Galileo.
 IRNSS-1D
• IRNSS-1D is the fourth IRNSS satellite. It was launched using India's PSLV-
C27 on 28 March 2015.

12. • The satellite was placed in geosynchronous orbit, will help augmenting the satellite
based navigation system of India which is currently under development.
 IRNSS-1E
• IRNSS-1E is the fifth IRNSS satellite. It was launched on 20 January 2016 using
India's PSLV-C31.
• A highly accurate Rubidium atomic clock is part of the navigation payload of the
satellite.
• IRNSS -1E carries two types of payloads – navigation payload and ranging payload.
The navigation payload of IRNSS-1E transmits navigation service signals to the
users.
 IRNSS-1F
• IRNSS-1F is the sixth IRNSS satellite. It was launched on 10 March 2016 using India's
PSLV-C32.
 IRNSS-1G
• IRNSS-1G is the seventh IRNSS satellite. It was launched on 28 April 2016 using
India's PSLV-C33 , which concludes the setting up of the Indian Regional Navigation
Satellite System.
• It will be launched into a Sub-Geosynchronous Transfer Orbit (Sub-GTO).

• NAVIC will guide fishermen and sailors by showing shortest
route to place of large fish availability.
• NAVIC will aid the armed forces in accurately determining
their position in combat and help direct missiles straight into
enemy territory.
• NAVIC’s position accuracy will aid relief and rescue operations
conducted during disaster situations like floods and
earthquakes.
• Satellite navigation is possible accurately because IRNSS-1D.

14. CONCLUSION
• NAVIC (Navigation with Indian Constellation) is an Operational
name of IRNSS.
• IRNSS is an independent Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System
being developed by India. It is designed to provide accurate position
information service to users in India as well as the region extending
up to 1500 km from its boundary, which is its primary service area.
• In this Programme there are two levels of service/access to data
• 1. Standard Positioning Service (SPS)
• which is provided to all the users
• 2. Restricted Service (RS)
• which is an encrypted service provided only to the authorised users
like Indian Security forces.
• NAVIC has total of 7 satellites of which 3 are in GEO (GeoStationary)
orbit and 4 are in GSO (GeoSynchronous) orbit.
