David Koch Hall Of Human Origins Analysis
The David H. Koch Hall OF Human Origins: What does it mean to be human.
The Hall of Human Origins tells the story of human evolution in a permanent exhibition space
containing nearly 300 fossils and artifacts. The exhibition was very interesting and educative, and the
benefits of seeing the various gallery in person is nonpareil. I learnt a lot about the evolution of
humans as a specie. The faces of the various Homos and the connection I felt with them makes the
experience worthwhile. Most importantly the exhibits makes me understand more about the evolution
of the Hominids (the earliest humanlike creatures).
The first chapter of our text talks about the first humans, but it did not go into more details or mention
them by their names. The

The Healthsouth Corporation Inc.
INTRODUCTION The HealthSouth Corporation was started in 1984 by Richard Scrushy with hopes
of becoming one of the largest healthcare companies in the country. It was doing quite well by 1996
with a market value of nearly $12 billion and was one of the United States largest healthcare firms.
This all fell apart in 2003 when it was discovered that Scrushy and his employees had committed
fraud in the estimated range of almost $2.7 billion (Daigle, Louwers and Morris 887). Scrushy, over
the years, had brought on many new faces to the company. Many of these employees were friends of
Scrushy from previous business ventures and business meetings. These employees and the others
involved in the fraud were given the name family ; highly due to the fact that they all knew what was
happening and not one wanted to go to the authorities to confess. It was after the fraud had gone on for
nearly six years that the former CFO Weston Smith tipped off federal investigators.
Following the actions by Smith, the four other CFO s who ran the company during the fraud came
forward which included: Aaron Beam Jr., Michael Martin, Malcom McVay, and then current CFO
William Owens. Along with the CFO s their staff members who were also in on the fraud also came
forward bringing the total number of involved to fifteen. Also the Birmingham Alabama office of
Ernst Young came under heavy scrutiny for auditing HealthSouth during the fraud and failing to take
action on any evidence they found.

Financial Statements Of The State Of California
The financial statements of the State of California convey valuable information to outside users about
the State s fiscal position and how it utilizes financial resources. The objective of this essay is to
identify five things that I can ascertain about the State of California from these financial statements.
One thing you can learn from the financial statements is how many legally separate entities the State
of California is financially accountable for. The governmental accounting term for these entities is
called component units, and when they are presented separately from the primary governmental funds,
they are discretely presented as if they are a separate fund of the primary government. Component
units that are not discretely ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
While it is unfair to compare the magnitudes of these numbers without providing scale, it does speak
to the differences in scale between California and Ohio. For Ohio, OSU represents just 39.11% of total
expenses and 19.70% of total net expense for component units. More information can be found about
both Universities in their respective state s Discretely Presented Component Units Financial
Statements section.
To find information on the blended component units, you must review the component units section of
the Overview of the Financial Statements (Government wide Financial Statements). The blended
component units include the California Public Employees Retirement System and the California State
Teachers Retirement System as well as other Fiduciary component units. Since these units are blended
into the primary government s financial statements, it is harder to dissect any pertinent information
from them. This represents one thing you can learn about from a government s financial statements:
how many component units it has and particular figures for any discretely presented component units.
The next thing you can learn from a government s financial statements is about its infrastructure.
Typically states elect to use the modified approach for capitalizing infrastructure. Under this approach,

The Notebook And The Last Song Essay
The famous Nicholas Sparks novels The Notebook and The Last Song are based on non fictional
events, while Rapunzel is a fictional short story fully based on fairytale. Although these are two
different genres, all three pieces share a common story line and even the same themes. The story line,
like any princess fairytale or romantic novel involves two people who fall in love but go through many
obstacles to be together. However, in the end, they live happily ever after. The two themes that these
three pieces of literature have in common are determination and fate. Throughout this paper you will
see this story line and those themes unfold.
We hear determination in our everyday lives, no matter our age nor our location. Although we may
hear this constantly, determination is something very hard to obtain. For these stories, the word
determination is nothing but known and relived constantly through the character s lives. In addition to
determination, we hear the word fate constantly. We ve heard this growing up through watching any
and every Disney movie out there, including Rapunzel . The definition, according to Wikipedia, is as
followed: be destined to happen, turn out, or act in a particular way. Everyone is born with a fate, we
are all here on this earth for a different purpose and fate. We just don t know our fate as we go through
life, just like these characters.
Rapunzel is a short story by Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm. The plot of the story is the same as the

Comparing Fences And A Face In The Crowd
August Wilson s Fences and A Face in the Crowd two significantly underrated masterpieces. The
stories are completely different but the main protagonists are very alike. When Lonesome was at the
top of the world he felt as if he was indestructible. Before everyone found out who he really was he
said I m not just an entertainer I m an influence, a wielder of opinion, a force... a force! (A Face in the
Crowd). Troy Wilson was the same, he said Death is nothing but a fastball on the outside corner
(Fences). He talks down on death and feels indestructible portraying a fastball as an easy pitch.
Making him feel immortal or invincible. Where these characters differ is in their younger lives and
somewhat in personality. Lonesome seems to have always been an alcoholic and doesn t have a
fulfilling past. We know this because Marcia asked him if he always drank so harshly, which he
replied saying Not always. Back in Riddle they was pretty strict. Didn t allow us to touch hard liquor
till we was 10 or 11 ( A Face in the Crowd). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

the text we are able to see that When I found you and Cory and a halfway decent job...I was safe....I

I had a family (Fences). I can personally relate to the most to Lonesome personality wise. Lonesome
was two completely different people on screen and real life. I too am very different when I am around
my friends compared to when I am around strangers. Not in a bad way like Lonesome but the

Essay about changing self, context in song lyrics
Text title: Change You Or Change Me
Source/ Date:
Medium: Rap song
Composer: Fabolous
Purpose: The main purpose of the text is indeed to entertain the listener in any way possible whether it
be enjoying fab s witty punch lines or being able to relate to the issues present. Another purpose
suggested is to relate with the composer (Fabolous) and gain knowledge of the occurrences
experienced by the composer e/g racism or incidents in the area . Fabolous says I want to bring you in,
and let you see my world looking through my eyes.
Intended Audience: Many features in the text suggest that the intended audience are; Other African
Americans as he uses the term nigger which is generally used when talking to other African
Americans. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In verse 2 fab questions change and again suggests that there has been change. An outward change.
The environment and circumstances have changed but inside (soul), self is still the same. Changes are
taking place but he is not letting it have an affect on him. When fab says to remind me where I m from
I look at my own tooth I feel he is referring to his family roots and history which he is aware of.
Verse, the final verse sees a change in attitude. Fab becomes more aggressive towards the feeling of
changing self he says It s getting me sick, someone prescribe me some medicine ,fab wants to revert to
the past, he wants to reverse the change that is surrounding him.
The final chorus, full of coarse language suggests the message of take me for what I am as he states I
am still the same nigger man .
Techniques used to represent ideas: Language language is used to represent the idea of aggression as
fabulous uses profanities particularly towards the end of the text.
Rhetorical questions are used to question the listener further involving them e/g why would I change?
.
Similes are used to give the listener a greater understanding or image of a point e/g When I get green
like the incredible hulk? which represents jealousy and power.
The technique of a monologue is used. It tells us more about Fubolous. It makes fabulous seem more
like an authority figure with his opinion more prominent
Other features include medaphores, use of rhyme,

Learning The Importance Of Distributed Learning Environments
Learning the importance of distributed learning environments
Collaborative learning
We as societies are hindered in advancement by secluding ourselves alone. Learning in groups
working together adds an element of scaffolding and accountability to learning. The shared
construction of meaning is most visible and available for research at the small group unit of analysis,
where it appears as group cognition (Stahl et al., 2006). Social cohesion adds elements of
accountability and a sense of enjoyment, camaraderie, and social acceptance of all cultures. Adding to
the literature, Akyol Garrison, 2014, Community of Inquiry argues Social presence may well have
more influence in informal learning environments, K 12 settings, or in online learning where students
are new to this medium (Akyol, Garrison, p.18, 2014). Positive reinforcement striving to acquire
meaningful relationships build lifelong ethical citizens.
Social Interaction in learning.
Sharing and cooperation have passed the tests of time. As humans, we are constantly looking for that
human connection and membership within a group. A complex of simultaneously applied instructional
approaches, each reinforcing and/or complementing the other can enhance collaborative learning and
social interaction amongst group members (Kreijns et al. p.338, 2003). Working together has never
been so important, and effective teamwork never so stressed, bringing people together who would
otherwise be easily divided with technology.

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Bamboo

Bamboo grows very quickly, with some varieties growing 10 feet a year. This rapid growth makes
bamboo an excellent choice when you want a natural fence and you want it quickly. Bamboo can be
tricky, however, and you need to be careful what bamboo variety you plant and how. There are many
invasive species of bamboo that are best avoided. Running bamboo varieties, too, can cause problems
and are likely to end up in places you and your neighbors won t appreciate.
Choose Your Type
The first step to a bamboo fence is choosing what type of bamboo you ll be planting. Bamboo plants
are categorized as clumping or running. As the name suggests, clumping bamboo grows in thick
patches, or clumps, forming a dense and bushy barrier. A clump is usually three to 10 feet around,
depending on the bamboo variety. Clumping bamboo stays where you plant it, so you ll need more
plants to create a barrier fence. Running bamboo quickly spreads itself, allowing you to grow a fence
using fewer plants. Be aware, however, that running bamboo spreads itself indiscriminately. You ll
need to take some extra steps during plating to keep it contained. If you don t, you and your neighbors
will be battling unwanted shoots forever.

Once you ve decided on a clumping or running bamboo, take a trip to your local garden center to
choose your plants. Bamboo grows naturally on every continent except Antarctica, so you ll have no
trouble finding a variety that grows in your climate. If you live in a colder area, consider cold hardy
species like red margin ( Phyllostachys rubromarginata) and macon rivercane ( Arundinaria gigantea
Macon ). Macon rivercane is also excellent for poorly drained soils, where most bamboos don t do
well. Most bamboo prefers at least five hours of sun a day, but umbrella bamboo (Fargesia murielae)
is an excellent choice for shady areas. Your local garden center is the best source of information about
what types of bamboo will thrive in your area.
Plant Your Bamboo
Unless you ve picked a variety that likes wet feet, plant your bamboo in moist, loamy soil. To plant
your bamboo, dig a hole that is 1.5 to 2 times the size of

The Importance Of Liberal Arts
Today students major in areas such as medicine, economics, engineering and business yet, not many
major in liberal arts. Why is that? Steve Pearlstein, a writer and a Robinson Professor of Public Affairs
at George Mason University, in his article Meet the parents who won t let their children study
literature (2016), argues that college students should be able to pursue on the major they want rather
than listen to what their parents want for them. He supports his argument by providing testimonies,
statistical evidence, and studies. The author s purpose is to encourage all students to consider
becoming a liberal arts major. Out of all his appeals, his strongest were both logical and ethical
because he provided an amount of sources that build up his credibility. In the other hand, the article
lacks on emotional appeal. Overall, he delivers a well structured article that hits the points on why we
should consider majors like liberal arts and how students take majors that their parents prefer. To build
his argument Pearlstein uses logical appeal that demonstrates to be one of his strongest appeals out of
his whole article. He does this by this by giving an example of a parental testimony. Kyler Tucker of
Fredericksburg, Va, a parent that stood outside with his son in long line in front of engineering school
booth commented: To spend $80,000 on a history, degree, I d need to see a way forward to a career
(Pearlstein 52). In this case, most parents pay their children s

American citizens are getting tired of the governments increasing control of the economy, health care,
and a dodgy recovery plan (Engstrom, 2). According to a national survey, Voters are starting to realize
that the regulations implemented by government are beginning to intrude more so on people s personal
lives (Thompson and Tringali, 2). The survey also said that, A majority of both conservatives (61%)
and liberals (54%) say they are both negatively impacted by regulations that tell American business

To Kill A Mockingbird Social Class Analysis
A Need For Change In western culture, people are treated differently based on resources, family
heritage, and now personal achievements. Social classing and the consequences of it have been
prevalent in societies since ancient times. Although it has been called by different names such as caste,
stratification, Bourgeoisie vs. Aristocrats, and Plebeians vs. Patricians, social inequality remains. In To
Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee paints a picture of the distinct type of social classing that existed in a
small Alabama town in the early 1900s. Based on skin color, background, and wealth, people are
considered to be upper, middle, or lower class. Examples of social classing appear in the book through
the Ewells reputation, through Aunt Alexandra s views of other families, and during Scout s first day
at school. The Ewells are considered poor white trash. Notorious for laziness and living off of the
government s money, they do not contribute to society. Every town the size of Maycomb had families
like the Ewells. No economic fluctuations changed their status people like the Ewells lived as guests
of the county in prosperity as well as in the depths of depression. (227). People in Maycomb avoid the

Lifetime Of Education Analysis
Lifetime of Education
What does education really mean? Experts believe that education is the process of receiving or giving
systematic instruction, especially at a school or university. In other words, this is saying that education
is when you receive information only from a fixed plan and this has a higher chance of getting
received from a public school or university. I do not believe this is a great way to define the word
education. I believe education is not a fixed plan because I know family members who did not
graduate from high school or even go to elementary school, and they still know many things, such as
math, because of the experiences they have gone through. I also believe that education is not brought

Control Of Gene Expression By H Ns
Control of gene expression by H NS
H NS is known as a global regulator which influence the expression of large number of genes in
response to various environmental factors like pH, osmolarity or temperature (Atlung and Ingmer,
1997; Dorman, 2007).Numerous studies can have shown the gene regulatory functions of H NS in
E.coli and Salmonella, acting mainly as a gene silencer (Dorman, 2004; Lucchini et al.,
2006).Transcriptomic studies have revealed that H NS regulates around 1439 genes in S.typhimurium.
In uropathogenic E.coli strain, 536, H NS regulates around 500 genes, including many virulence
factors like cytotoxins, fimbriae and siderophores (Muller et al., 2006).H NS is also responsible for the
silencing of horizontally acquired DNA ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The higher order, rigid, nucleoprotein filament formed by H NS,was found to be receptive to
environmental factors, which are known to influence the gene silencing functions of H NS in vivo
(Amit et al., 2003; Atlung and Ingmer, 1997; Liu et al., 2010; Ono et al., 2005). It was also observed
that salmonella anti silencing protein SsrB could displace H NS from DNA only when H NS
nucleoprotein filament was formed (Walthers et al., 2011). A recent study has shown that H NS
nucleoprotein filament formation is the structural basis for gene silencing by H NS (Lim et al.,
2012a).Using AFM analysis and magnetic tweezer set up,the group showed that only wild type H NS,
but not gene silencing negative H NS mutants, led to the formation of rigid nucleoprotein filaments.
The rigid H NS nucleoprotein filament leads to the formation of an extended DNA conformation (Liu
et al., 2010) and at higher MgCl2 concentrations, results in DNA hairpin formation, implying that
rigid nucleoprotein filament formation and hairpin formation are not mutually exclusive (Lim et al.,
2012a). From the above observations, a model for H NS mediated gene silencing was proposed (Lim
et al., 2012a), based on nucleoprotein filament as the basis for gene silencing (Fig I.11). Here, H NS
nucleates at affinity sites in the gene regulatory region and polymerizes to form nucleoprotein
filament, which is continuous, encompassing extensive segment of DNA. This might

African American Superiority
When African Americans first arrived in American colonies in 1619, religion and wealth were the
determining factors of superiority. Most labor was performed by indentured servants of European
decent at this time. However as immigrant arrivals slowed and the need for labor increased, African
American slaves were shipped over and considered to be a never ending supply of labor. Colonial law
and statues began to use the word White opposed to Englishmen or Christians to show superiority.
Lower class Europeans thus obtained more rights and had access to better job opportunities as they
were replaced by the inferior African Americans. At this time African Americans were believed to be a
different species while Natives were considered to be white

How Language Changes Start and Spread Essay
Language change happens every day. New words are constantly being added and new dialects are
forming. People have always argued about the causes of language change and tried to control the
changes that occurred but ultimately they accomplished nothing. Languages changes and spread as a
result of the people who use it daily. African American English and California English are both
examples of the different ways language can change. People try to resist the changes in their language
because they do not want to see it change. Language change is a natural process that can be affected
by others but never stopped. This course has done an excellent job explaining how language change
starts and spreads.

As different dialects of a language develop they are shared with the people of the area. People often
use the dialect of those that they interact with most. To explain this simply, a person who only speaks
Chicano English is fine in their daily interactions with other speakers of the dialect but they may have
trouble speaking with a Northern Dialect. The spread of language change depends on the factors that
are causing it. The natural change in language over time smarts in a small area and spreads to
everyone that it comes in contact with.
This course focused on a numerous languages that were undergoing change. The simplest and most
relevant for many Americans are the changes that are occurring in English. America is a great melting
pot of different people and as such English s multiple dialects reflect cultural diversity. One of the
most studied and still not understood dialects is African American English. The point of contention
between the ideas for the origin of African American English is whether it was based on an existing
dialect in the south or if it was creole of English and different West African languages. Either way this
is an example of a rapid language change that has persisted over time. It is illogical to believe that the
slaves who were forced to learn English did not incorporate some of their own language. How else
could they have communicated before they fully understood English. An example of slower language

Consider the Role and Treatment of Love in Carol Ann...
Consider the treatment of love in Carol Ann Duffy s Valentine .
Carol Ann Duffy s Valentine ultimately depicts a highly cynical attitude towards love and
conventional gestures of affection. The poem uses traditional images of valentine as a starting point,
before showing how an onion is much more true to the nature of love. An extended metaphor of the
onion is then used to depict Duffy s underlying implication that love can be destructive on many
different levels.
One of the main ways in which Duffy conveys this message is through structural devices. The
structural progression of the poem is very ordered and logical; firstly defying traditional images of
love, and then developing the stanzas by offering statements to justify this ... Show more content on

It can therefore be seen that romanticised images of love using eloquent imagery and metaphors are
used to depict how love is exactly the opposite; harsh and blinding.
Furthermore, Duffy also uses personification of the onion in order to accentuate its overwhelming
power; much like love itself. The line Its fierce kiss will stay on your lips/possessive and faithful
depicts literally the strong taste of the onion, as well as exposing how difficult love is to forget or
obliterate its effects. Here the pungency of taste is being compared to the sheer intensity of love;
another point where the comparison of love to an onion is being made explicit. In addition to this
personification, other literary techniques are used in order to inject life into the text. In the second
stanza, the onomatopoeic word wobbling helps add dramatic effect to the image of the wobbling
vision, and creates a clearer visual image for readers.
Similarly, Duffy also uses paradoxical images to accentuate the effectiveness of the images illustrated.
The taste of the onion is described as possessive and faithful; both are terms which are asserted in the
experience of love, despite one being faithful and one, paradoxically,

Why Rebecca Is Not Crazy
No words can describe what goes on in this girl s mind. Some call her deranged, crazy, but others say
she is smart and insane, but you really need to get into the mind of a deranged person. Before she met
her maker, Rebecca was a well rounded girl with a good head on her shoulders. She was smart,
intelligent even a little nerdy, but she had a sweetheart/and would do anything for those of family or
friends. Rebecca does have OCD so she is very picky on some things including everything has to be in
an order. If not she goes a little mad which is normal at least for the normal side of her mind. Rebecca
has what some would say split personality, but she wasn t always like that, in fact, this girl was school
body president, someone who would volunteer at animal shelters and even old folks homes. Then
there is another part of Rebecca that is hidden from most, but her maker brought the darker part out of
her. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
She angers easily when things don t go her way, and she even talks to herself at times which shows
that Rebecca is not exactly in her right mindset. Though she is not crazy in fact Rebecca is smarter
than what most people think of her. She finds violence thrilling and enjoys hurting others to a point,
but she also laughs as well when someone is hurt. Rebecca was molded from her maker calling her his
lil monster, and making her a werewolf knowing she would be a predator. Rebecca doesn t like when

Case Study #1: Non tariff Barriers to International Trade 1. In the Xia case, if the WTO were to rule in
favor of Brazil, which of the WTO trade agreements would contain the justification and why? Answer:
Brazil banned imports of Xia goods from China because there was allegations and unconfirmed
speculation pertaining to China s use of hazardous materials (for example, lead paint and potentially
carcinogenic plastic and rubbers) to manufacture toys cheaply, which sparked consumer panic around
the globe. The imports of Xia goods were banned until the test was performed to guarantee that these
goods do not possess any health risk. The Chinese government completely refuted this claim and

Answer: The Chinese government would reduce or eliminate the quotas and other measures which
until now have protected domestic production of soybeans from cheaper imports. China s
consumption of soybeans ballooned by more than 160% between 2000 and 2011 when import barriers
were removed, but the area planted with soybeans declined by 20% during those same years. Chinese
farmers were simply unable to compete with imported soybeans that were RMB 300 to 600 (US$45
90) cheaper per ton than domestic beans. Imported soybeans now account for three quarters of the
soybeans processed into cooking oil and feed in China, the products of soybean crushing. If China is
able to prove that domestic soybean producers are not able to survive because of low cost imports
from Brazil, the WTO ruling would be in favor of China and such measures would be upheld.
However, if such measures were used as retaliation to Brazilian ban on Chinese toys, the WTO ruling
would be in favor of Brazil and China would not be able to restrict import of Soybean from Brazil.

Gender-Polarized Voting In Detroit
In the past decade Detroit municipal government has undergone rapid changes in its institutional
functions. The city government once allowed for all nine members to be elected at large but since a
2009 referendum was held with overwhelming approval that amended the city charter, Detroit now
requires that just seven of its nine councilors be elected via wards or districts while two of the cities
councilors are elected at large. The change that occurred in the city of Detroit was seen by many as
being a way of cleaning the city up after decades of corruption crippling the cities political functions
and economic growth, and after the forced removal and resignation of the corrupt mayor and council
president, the citizens of Detroit sought to clean ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
there are some issues that critics of amending the charter of the City of Detroit do point out. The
literature on the representation of women finds precisely the opposite effect for single member
districts. While there are some exceptions, the vast majority of the research has concluded that
districts are either meaningless (Alozie and Manganero 1993; Bullock and MacManus 1991) or
disadvantageous for women candidates. Trounstine and Valdini are quoted as saying . Because women
are nearly always between 48% and 52% of a community s population, we cannot expect that they
will be aided by districts. Furthermore, there is little evidence of gender polarized voting. A number of
studies have found that voters evaluate female candidates drawing on gendered stereotypes and that
these stereotypes can affect perceptions about candidates and vote choice. While it can be expected
that changing the city charter to elect councilors by district or ward instead of at large may benefit
African American and Latino males, there is no clear evidence to support that these changes will
benefit white women and women of color any in advancing their ability to hold elected office in
Detroit or hold their councilor any more accountable than

Franz Marc was a German artist and printmaker, and also one of the key statistics of the German
Expressionist movement. Franz Marc was born in February 8, 1880 in Munich and past away in
March 4, 1916, eventually Marc was only 36 years old. Wilhelm, the father, was an expert landscape
painter; his mother, Sophie, was a strict Calvinist. Marc began to study at the Academy of Fine Arts,
Munich in 1900. In 1903 and 1907, he spent time in France, intensely in Paris, visiting the city s
museums and copying many paintings, a conventional way for artists to study and improve technique.

The blue, as Marc prescribed, gives a peaceful note to the agitated atmosphere. He recollects an
illusionistic portrayal within which he seeks to form a rich colour composition that reflects the vitality
of his subject. The principal achievement in Red Horses is this portrayal of the uninhibited energy of
nature using completely naturalistic colours. 2. Figure : Tierschicksale by Franz Marc
This Tierschicksale is one of the most popular landscapes drawn by Franz Marc. It characteristic of the
sense of apocalypse that began to taint Marc s work and is relate to his feelings on the forthcoming
war.
This painting used of numerous elements and principles of design. Using line showing the contrast
between the animal and the floras. Also, the value (tone) and colour used containing dark and light in
colours, the tone of the colour on the right of the painting is darker, and lighter colour on the left.
Moreover, this landscape created an emphasis (focal point). An animal is clearly shown in the central
of the landscape and creates a focal dominance.
Marc clarifies that he began to see the ugliness in animals which he had previously thought only
existed in humans. The use of lines and geometric shapes in this landscape carried the emotional
charge previously conveyed by animals. This landscape related to Marc s ideas on the impending war.

As the military conflict and increasing hostility between Russia and Ukraine continues, so will the
visible effects on the Ukrainian economy, which could result in extensive and long term changes in
Ukraine e energy sector and the country s energy policy. In light of growing pressures from the
European Union to maintain a normalised relationship with Gazprom, as well as the looming end date
of its gas supply contract with Russia in 2019, Ukraine s foreign policy must aim to re examine this
relationship, but also drive efforts for diversification and ensuring energy security in the long run.
In a recent government statement, Prime Minister Volodymyr Groysman stated that Ukraine is aiming
to finalise a reviewed energy strategy by the end of 2016 with the key objective of achieving energy
independence and a creation of an Energy Efficiency Fund. The Prime Minister stressed that, given its
resources, Ukraine, should not be an importer, but an exporter of energy resources. However, Ukraine
needs to examine the realities of its energy supply and demand and how this will shape and affect the
governments foreign policy towards the EU and Russia going forward. Currently, Russia s gas
supplies amount to over 69% of Ukraine s energy demand. Since its independence, much of the
country s foreign policy has generally been driven by a need to strike a balance in her relationships
with the East and West, but due to history and geography, swell as various political forces, Ukraine

The Battle Of The Kosovo War
The first battle of the Kosovo war which was meticulously planned with stomach revolting malice was
less than a mile from my house and it resulted in the death of over 50 members of the Jashari family.
As the Serbian Army surrounded the three homes the Jashari s began to prepare for the onslaught that
was to come. Although less than 20 men had arms they valiantly defended their house, their land, and
most importantly their family from a determined and well organize Army. These men, farmers by
trade, equipped with simple Kalashnikov rifles defended their homes and lives for hours and didn t

We drove through the narrow dirt roads that winded through the hills. We were cautious not to run into
the Serbian Army as they would want us to head South out of the country rather than North towards
our cousin s village. We finally made it to our cousins after what seemed like a never ending trip
although we only traveled ten miles. Our cousin s village would be our home for now, it was better
than being dead but we would soon learn that death could be easier to obtain than picking an apple
from a tree. The days slowly passed and every night we would hear the roar of gun fire. My mother
would rock me to bed to the sound of those shots and the explosions in the distance. The war raged on
and people in the cities were in need of food. At the time we had plenty of food so my father Gani and
his nephew Besnik decided they would enter the city to sell some crops. Gani and Besnik loaded their
small car with apples, plums, berries, some flour, and corn. They set off for Mitrovica and planned to
take the backroads all the way there. Their plans were soon useless as they were required to get off of
the backroads. Gani and Besnik drove onto the main road that leads to Mitorvica and travelled on that
road for a little over a mile. They spotted an armored vehicle belonging to the Serbian Army and
decided to continue driving past it. Unfortunately, the vehicle turned around and began following
them. Gani had a hand grenade in the center

Mistranslation And Mistranslation In The Joy Luck Club
Mistranslation was a reoccurring theme in the book, The Joy Luck Club. There were frequent
scenarios when characters could not understand each other properly due to mistranslation and
miscommunication. Jing Mei has trouble understanding her mother in the following excerpt: It s not
showoff. She said the two soups were almost the same, chabudwo. Or maybe she said butong, not the
same thing at all. It was one of those Chinese expressions that means the better half of mixed
intentions. I can never remember things I didn t understand in the first place. Jing Mei cannot fully
understand her mother s intended meanings to a multitude of conversations due to this. Waverly Jong
had a certain run in with the language barrier as well. Aii ya. So shame be with mother? She grasped
my hand even tighter as she glared at me. I looked down. It s not that, it s just so obvious. It s just so
embarrassing. Embarrass you be my daughter? Her voice was cracking with anger. That s not what I
meant. That s not what I said. Waverly is trying her best to explain to her mother that she does not
want her mother to say that she is her daughter to every person she meets and the underlying feel of
becoming a trophy for her mother. Her mother has difficulty understanding this and she gets angry at
her daughter. This miscommunication escalates the hurt feelings felt between both parties.
This theme of mistranslation can be found everywhere in the current world. In the article Language
Matters: How a Minor Mistranslation Can Affect US China Relations the author goes on to talk about
how the U.S. mistranslated a small portion of the Chinese spokesman s comments. He goes on to
explain how these stories affected the United States of America. He says: These stories led Sebastian
Gorka, a top official on the U.S. National Security Council, to deride China s statement by pointing
out that the islands can be seen on Google Earth. Gorka then went on to decry China s territorial
expansionism. Gorka s broadcast was heard by the nation and some peoples ideas might have been
swayed that the Chinese are bad. This relates to the The Joy Luck Club in one way particular, the idea
that the smallest miscommunication problems can lead to a huge

Sounds and Imagery of Human Emotion
Sounds and Imagery of Human Emotion In Marge Piercy s The Secretary Chant , the author uses
images and sound to both dehumanize and mechanize the female speaker, while John Updike uses
imagery and sounds to make the Player Piano come to life. Piercy uses images of the speaker,
connected with various office equipment to give a vision to the reader of a woman living her life
through the office equipment that is part of her very being. Piercy uses personification in reverse and
other metaphors, such as metonymy, and paradox, to give an actual picture of the office machines

Marge Piercy s The Secretary Chant uses sounds to show that human emotion can be filed away and
replaced. In John Updike s Player Piano personification is used to wake up an inhuman piano that
plays itself, sort of like the poem itself does when read aloud. Updike uses assonance and consonance
in the first couple of lines to give musicality to the lines. The devices are first used with a repetition of
ick sounds to mimic the keys on the piano. Onomatopoeia is used throughout the poem to as words
make the sounds musically and mimic the Player Piano. The author follows those sounds with a
repetition of uck sounds. There are a lot of sound going on in the first stanza, including alliteration
internal rhymes, diction and meter with all coming together with the smooth s sounds a pleasant
melody. Updike uses a connotation for life when the speaker says: Light footed, my steel feelers
flicker (line 3). The connotation of the word flicker means life, as long as the flame is burning and the
denotation means to move with a fast or jerky motion. The combination of the two meanings gives the
feeling that the piano is alive. John Updike s poem, Player Piano shows through sound and images that
the personification of the mechanical speaker is alive and lively. In the second and third stanza build

Introduction
Public Relations as a profession first gained its presence in China in 1980s, by western concepts and
industrial practices being introduced from several international agencies which entered into this
uncultured market at the earliest (Hugh M. Culbertson Ni Chen, 1996). The emerging industry had
shown its huge potential in an increasingly healthier environment due to the policies of reform and
opening up and the development of market economy (Ni Chen, 2009).

Declarative Memory Essay
How the Brain Learns As Sousa (2017) states, Learning is the process by which we acquire new
knowledge and skills; memory is the process by which we retain the knowledge and skills for the
future (p. 86, 87). A person has the ability to learn many things throughout his/her lifetime. Research
states that a person can store unlimited amounts of information in forms of memory. Declarative and
non declarative are two different types of memory that people use to learn and grasp new concepts.
Both of these types of memory are used in order for a person to gain knowledge, develop habits, and
build muscle memory. Declarative Memory. Declarative memory describes the remembrance of facts,
names, objects, and music. Declarative memory is used in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Although, some of the categories can be challenged with research, most researchers would agree on
the breakdown of these categories. Procedural memory involves any type of memory that is learned
through motor and cognitive skills. These types of memory can include riding a bike, driving a car,
and knowing a procedure such as a morning ritual or habit. One can do these skills without thinking
too much about the activity. For example, when one first started driving, one was focused on the brake
and the gas as well as driving with both hands on the wheel. After a person learns how to drive, one
may forget that he/she was driving or gave no thought on what to do at a stop light. This also applies
to things such as reading, writing, and differentiating various types of colors. Although there may be
some thinking involved, the majority of the time one is simply using procedural memory to complete
these tasks. Perceptual representation system can be a part of the procedural memory but has a slight
difference. Perceptual representation can be described as the ability to put together fragmented words
and to tell whether a picture/thing can exist in the real world (Sousa, 2017). As Sousa (2017) states,
Classical conditioning (also called Pavlovian conditioning) occurs when a

Hiatal Hernia The protrusion of an organ, typically the stomach, through the esophageal opening in
the diaphragm (large dome shaped muscle that separates the chest from the abdomen) that allows a
portion of the stomach to move up into the chest cavity. A hiatal hernia occurs when a part of the
stomach pushes upward through the diaphragm, usually when a weakened muscle tissue allows the
stomach to bulge up through the diaphragm. The diaphragm normally has a small opening called the
hiatus, through which the esophagus passes on its way to connect to the stomach. The stomach can
push through this opening and causes a hiatal hernia or hiatus hernia. It s not always clear why this
happens, but pressure in the stomach and age related changes in

The Crossing Of The Delaware And The Victory At Trenton
A E s The Crossing is an exceptional dramatization of the crossing of the Delaware and the victory at
Trenton. It depicts the actions that George Washington and his men took leading up to the renowned
battle. The main points portrayed by the film are relatively accurate; however, there are still many
historical inaccuracies. Washington s use of profanity in the film, the weather during the march to
Trenton, and the flag flown by the American army are just a few. George Washington s dialogue in
The Crossing is the least accurate element of the film. Washington s leadership style was the direct
opposite. Nearly thirty years before the crossing of the Delaware, Washington made clear how he felt
about profanity in his Rules of Civility. His twenty second rule stated: Use no reproachful language
against anyone, neither curse, nor revile. Ten years later, he made this clear in his military affairs:
Colonel Washington has observed that the men of his regiment are very profane and reprobate. He
takes this opportunity to inform them of his great displeasure at such practices and assures them that if
they do not leave them off, they shall be severely punished. The officers are desired, if they hear any
man swear or make use of an oath or execration, to order the offender twenty five lashes immediately,
without court martial. For the second offense, he will be more severely punished (Sparks).
Washington s loathing for expletives persisted even 30 years later as seen in

  • 2. David Koch Hall Of Human Origins Analysis The David H. Koch Hall OF Human Origins: What does it mean to be human. The Hall of Human Origins tells the story of human evolution in a permanent exhibition space containing nearly 300 fossils and artifacts. The exhibition was very interesting and educative, and the benefits of seeing the various gallery in person is nonpareil. I learnt a lot about the evolution of humans as a specie. The faces of the various Homos and the connection I felt with them makes the experience worthwhile. Most importantly the exhibits makes me understand more about the evolution of the Hominids (the earliest humanlike creatures). The first chapter of our text talks about the first humans, but it did not go into more details or mention them by their names. The ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. The Healthsouth Corporation Inc. INTRODUCTION The HealthSouth Corporation was started in 1984 by Richard Scrushy with hopes of becoming one of the largest healthcare companies in the country. It was doing quite well by 1996 with a market value of nearly $12 billion and was one of the United States largest healthcare firms. This all fell apart in 2003 when it was discovered that Scrushy and his employees had committed fraud in the estimated range of almost $2.7 billion (Daigle, Louwers and Morris 887). Scrushy, over the years, had brought on many new faces to the company. Many of these employees were friends of Scrushy from previous business ventures and business meetings. These employees and the others involved in the fraud were given the name family ; highly due to the fact that they all knew what was happening and not one wanted to go to the authorities to confess. It was after the fraud had gone on for nearly six years that the former CFO Weston Smith tipped off federal investigators. Following the actions by Smith, the four other CFO s who ran the company during the fraud came forward which included: Aaron Beam Jr., Michael Martin, Malcom McVay, and then current CFO William Owens. Along with the CFO s their staff members who were also in on the fraud also came forward bringing the total number of involved to fifteen. Also the Birmingham Alabama office of Ernst Young came under heavy scrutiny for auditing HealthSouth during the fraud and failing to take action on any evidence they found. ... • 4. Financial Statements Of The State Of California The financial statements of the State of California convey valuable information to outside users about the State s fiscal position and how it utilizes financial resources. The objective of this essay is to identify five things that I can ascertain about the State of California from these financial statements. One thing you can learn from the financial statements is how many legally separate entities the State of California is financially accountable for. The governmental accounting term for these entities is called component units, and when they are presented separately from the primary governmental funds, they are discretely presented as if they are a separate fund of the primary government. Component units that are not discretely ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... While it is unfair to compare the magnitudes of these numbers without providing scale, it does speak to the differences in scale between California and Ohio. For Ohio, OSU represents just 39.11% of total expenses and 19.70% of total net expense for component units. More information can be found about both Universities in their respective state s Discretely Presented Component Units Financial Statements section. To find information on the blended component units, you must review the component units section of the Overview of the Financial Statements (Government wide Financial Statements). The blended component units include the California Public Employees Retirement System and the California State Teachers Retirement System as well as other Fiduciary component units. Since these units are blended into the primary government s financial statements, it is harder to dissect any pertinent information from them. This represents one thing you can learn about from a government s financial statements: how many component units it has and particular figures for any discretely presented component units. The next thing you can learn from a government s financial statements is about its infrastructure. Typically states elect to use the modified approach for capitalizing infrastructure. Under this approach, the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. The Notebook And The Last Song Essay The famous Nicholas Sparks novels The Notebook and The Last Song are based on non fictional events, while Rapunzel is a fictional short story fully based on fairytale. Although these are two different genres, all three pieces share a common story line and even the same themes. The story line, like any princess fairytale or romantic novel involves two people who fall in love but go through many obstacles to be together. However, in the end, they live happily ever after. The two themes that these three pieces of literature have in common are determination and fate. Throughout this paper you will see this story line and those themes unfold. We hear determination in our everyday lives, no matter our age nor our location. Although we may hear this constantly, determination is something very hard to obtain. For these stories, the word determination is nothing but known and relived constantly through the character s lives. In addition to determination, we hear the word fate constantly. We ve heard this growing up through watching any and every Disney movie out there, including Rapunzel . The definition, according to Wikipedia, is as followed: be destined to happen, turn out, or act in a particular way. Everyone is born with a fate, we are all here on this earth for a different purpose and fate. We just don t know our fate as we go through life, just like these characters. Rapunzel is a short story by Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm. The plot of the story is the same as the Disney ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Comparing Fences And A Face In The Crowd August Wilson s Fences and A Face in the Crowd two significantly underrated masterpieces. The stories are completely different but the main protagonists are very alike. When Lonesome was at the top of the world he felt as if he was indestructible. Before everyone found out who he really was he said I m not just an entertainer I m an influence, a wielder of opinion, a force... a force! (A Face in the Crowd). Troy Wilson was the same, he said Death is nothing but a fastball on the outside corner (Fences). He talks down on death and feels indestructible portraying a fastball as an easy pitch. Making him feel immortal or invincible. Where these characters differ is in their younger lives and somewhat in personality. Lonesome seems to have always been an alcoholic and doesn t have a fulfilling past. We know this because Marcia asked him if he always drank so harshly, which he replied saying Not always. Back in Riddle they was pretty strict. Didn t allow us to touch hard liquor till we was 10 or 11 ( A Face in the Crowd). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I wasn t gonna lay in the streets with a bottle of wine. I was safe. I had a family (Fences). I can personally relate to the most to Lonesome personality wise. Essay about changing self, context in song lyrics Text title: Change You Or Change Me Source/ Date: Medium: Rap song Composer: Fabolous Purpose: The main purpose of the text is indeed to entertain the listener in any way possible whether it be enjoying fab s witty punch lines or being able to relate to the issues present. Another purpose suggested is to relate with the composer (Fabolous) and gain knowledge of the occurrences experienced by the composer e/g racism or incidents in the area . Fabolous says I want to bring you in, and let you see my world looking through my eyes. Intended Audience: Many features in the text suggest that the intended audience are; Other African Americans as he uses the term nigger which is generally used when talking to other African Americans. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In verse 2 fab questions change and again suggests that there has been change. An outward change. The environment and circumstances have changed but inside (soul), self is still the same. Changes are taking place but he is not letting it have an affect on him. When fab says to remind me where I m from I look at my own tooth I feel he is referring to his family roots and history which he is aware of. Verse, the final verse sees a change in attitude. Fab becomes more aggressive towards the feeling of changing self he says It s getting me sick, someone prescribe me some medicine ,fab wants to revert to the past, he wants to reverse the change that is surrounding him. The final chorus, full of coarse language suggests the message of take me for what I am as he states I am still the same nigger man . Techniques used to represent ideas: Language language is used to represent the idea of aggression as fabulous uses profanities particularly towards the end of the text. Rhetorical questions are used to question the listener further involving them e/g why would I change? . Similes are used to give the listener a greater understanding or image of a point e/g When I get green like the incredible hulk? which represents jealousy and power. The technique of a monologue is used. It tells us more about Fubolous. It makes fabulous seem more

  • 9. Learning The Importance Of Distributed Learning Environments Learning the importance of distributed learning environments Collaborative learning We as societies are hindered in advancement by secluding ourselves alone. Learning in groups working together adds an element of scaffolding and accountability to learning. The shared construction of meaning is most visible and available for research at the small group unit of analysis, where it appears as group cognition (Stahl et al., 2006). Social cohesion adds elements of accountability and a sense of enjoyment, camaraderie, and social acceptance of all cultures. Adding to the literature, Akyol Garrison, 2014, Community of Inquiry argues Social presence may well have more influence in informal learning environments, K 12 settings, or in online learning where students are new to this medium (Akyol, Garrison, p.18, 2014). Positive reinforcement striving to acquire meaningful relationships build lifelong ethical citizens. Social Interaction in learning. Sharing and cooperation have passed the tests of time. As humans, we are constantly looking for that human connection and membership within a group. A complex of simultaneously applied instructional approaches, each reinforcing and/or complementing the other can enhance collaborative learning and social interaction amongst group members (Kreijns et al. p.338, 2003). Working together has never been so important, and effective teamwork never so stressed, bringing people together who would otherwise be easily divided with technology. ... • 10. Advantages And Disadvantages Of Bamboo 5760 × 3840 Caption Alternate Text Group Bamboo grows very quickly, with some varieties growing 10 feet a year. This rapid growth makes bamboo an excellent choice when you want a natural fence and you want it quickly. Bamboo can be tricky, however, and you need to be careful what bamboo variety you plant and how. There are many invasive species of bamboo that are best avoided. Running bamboo varieties, too, can cause problems and are likely to end up in places you and your neighbors won t appreciate. Choose Your Type The first step to a bamboo fence is choosing what type of bamboo you ll be planting. Bamboo plants are categorized as clumping or running. As the name suggests, clumping bamboo grows in thick patches, or clumps, forming a dense and bushy barrier. A clump is usually three to 10 feet around, depending on the bamboo variety. Clumping bamboo stays where you plant it, so you ll need more plants to create a barrier fence. Running bamboo quickly spreads itself, allowing you to grow a fence using fewer plants. Be aware, however, that running bamboo spreads itself indiscriminately. You ll need to take some extra steps during plating to keep it contained. If you don t, you and your neighbors will be battling unwanted shoots forever. Choose a Variety 3456 × 2304 Caption Alternate Text Group Once you ve decided on a clumping or running bamboo, take a trip to your local garden center to choose your plants. Bamboo grows naturally on every continent except Antarctica, so you ll have no trouble finding a variety that grows in your climate. If you live in a colder area, consider cold hardy species like red margin ( Phyllostachys rubromarginata) and macon rivercane ( Arundinaria gigantea Macon ). Macon rivercane is also excellent for poorly drained soils, where most bamboos don t do well. Most bamboo prefers at least five hours of sun a day, but umbrella bamboo (Fargesia murielae) is an excellent choice for shady areas. Your local garden center is the best source of information about what types of bamboo will thrive in your area. Plant Your Bamboo Unless you ve picked a variety that likes wet feet, plant your bamboo in moist, loamy soil. To plant your bamboo, dig a hole that is 1.5 to 2 times the size of

Steve Pearlstein, a writer and a Robinson Professor of Public Affairs at George Mason University, in his article Meet the parents who won t let their children study literature (2016), argues that college students should be able to pursue on the major they want rather than listen to what their parents want for them. He supports his argument by providing testimonies, statistical evidence, and studies. The author s purpose is to encourage all students to consider becoming a liberal arts major. Out of all his appeals, his strongest were both logical and ethical because he provided an amount of sources that build up his credibility. In the other hand, the article lacks on emotional appeal. Overall, he delivers a well structured article that hits the points on why we should consider majors like liberal arts and how students take majors that their parents prefer. To build his argument Pearlstein uses logical appeal that demonstrates to be one of his strongest appeals out of his whole article. He does this by this by giving an example of a parental testimony. Kyler Tucker of Fredericksburg, Va, a parent that stood outside with his son in long line in front of engineering school booth commented: To spend $80,000 on a history, degree, I d need to see a way forward to a career (Pearlstein 52). Social classing and the consequences of it have been prevalent in societies since ancient times. Although it has been called by different names such as caste, stratification, Bourgeoisie vs. Aristocrats, and Plebeians vs. Patricians, social inequality remains. In To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee paints a picture of the distinct type of social classing that existed in a small Alabama town in the early 1900s. Based on skin color, background, and wealth, people are considered to be upper, middle, or lower class. Examples of social classing appear in the book through the Ewells reputation, through Aunt Alexandra s views of other families, and during Scout s first day at school. The Ewells are considered poor white trash. Notorious for laziness and living off of the government s money, they do not contribute to society. Every town the size of Maycomb had families like the Ewells. No economic fluctuations changed their status people like the Ewells lived as guests of the county in prosperity as well as in the depths of depression. (227). Experts believe that education is the process of receiving or giving systematic instruction, especially at a school or university. In other words, this is saying that education is when you receive information only from a fixed plan and this has a higher chance of getting received from a public school or university. I do not believe this is a great way to define the word education. Control Of Gene Expression By H Ns Control of gene expression by H NS H NS is known as a global regulator which influence the expression of large number of genes in response to various environmental factors like pH, osmolarity or temperature (Atlung and Ingmer, 1997; Dorman, 2007).Numerous studies can have shown the gene regulatory functions of H NS in E.coli and Salmonella, acting mainly as a gene silencer (Dorman, 2004; Lucchini et al., 2006).Transcriptomic studies have revealed that H NS regulates around 1439 genes in S.typhimurium. In uropathogenic E.coli strain, 536, H NS regulates around 500 genes, including many virulence factors like cytotoxins, fimbriae and siderophores (Muller et al., 2006).H NS is also responsible for the silencing of horizontally acquired DNA ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The higher order, rigid, nucleoprotein filament formed by H NS,was found to be receptive to environmental factors, which are known to influence the gene silencing functions of H NS in vivo (Amit et al., 2003; Atlung and Ingmer, 1997; Liu et al., 2010; Ono et al., 2005). It was also observed that salmonella anti silencing protein SsrB could displace H NS from DNA only when H NS nucleoprotein filament was formed (Walthers et al., 2011). A recent study has shown that H NS nucleoprotein filament formation is the structural basis for gene silencing by H NS (Lim et al., 2012a).Using AFM analysis and magnetic tweezer set up,the group showed that only wild type H NS, but not gene silencing negative H NS mutants, led to the formation of rigid nucleoprotein filaments. The rigid H NS nucleoprotein filament leads to the formation of an extended DNA conformation (Liu et al., 2010) and at higher MgCl2 concentrations, results in DNA hairpin formation, implying that rigid nucleoprotein filament formation and hairpin formation are not mutually exclusive (Lim et al., 2012a). From the above observations, a model for H NS mediated gene silencing was proposed (Lim et al., 2012a), based on nucleoprotein filament as the basis for gene silencing (Fig I.11). Here, H NS nucleates at affinity sites in the gene regulatory region and polymerizes to form nucleoprotein filament, which is continuous, encompassing extensive segment of DNA. This might ... • 21. Consider the Role and Treatment of Love in Carol Ann... Consider the treatment of love in Carol Ann Duffy s Valentine . Carol Ann Duffy s Valentine ultimately depicts a highly cynical attitude towards love and conventional gestures of affection. The poem uses traditional images of valentine as a starting point, before showing how an onion is much more true to the nature of love. An extended metaphor of the onion is then used to depict Duffy s underlying implication that love can be destructive on many different levels. One of the main ways in which Duffy conveys this message is through structural devices. The structural progression of the poem is very ordered and logical; firstly defying traditional images of love, and then developing the stanzas by offering statements to justify this ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It can therefore be seen that romanticised images of love using eloquent imagery and metaphors are used to depict how love is exactly the opposite; harsh and blinding. Furthermore, Duffy also uses personification of the onion in order to accentuate its overwhelming power; much like love itself. The line Its fierce kiss will stay on your lips/possessive and faithful depicts literally the strong taste of the onion, as well as exposing how difficult love is to forget or obliterate its effects. Here the pungency of taste is being compared to the sheer intensity of love; another point where the comparison of love to an onion is being made explicit. In addition to this personification, other literary techniques are used in order to inject life into the text. In the second stanza, the onomatopoeic word wobbling helps add dramatic effect to the image of the wobbling vision, and creates a clearer visual image for readers. Similarly, Duffy also uses paradoxical images to accentuate the effectiveness of the images illustrated. There were frequent scenarios when characters could not understand each other properly due to mistranslation and miscommunication. Jing Mei has trouble understanding her mother in the following excerpt: It s not showoff. She said the two soups were almost the same, chabudwo. Or maybe she said butong, not the same thing at all. It was one of those Chinese expressions that means the better half of mixed intentions. I can never remember things I didn t understand in the first place. Her mother has difficulty understanding this and she gets angry at her daughter. This miscommunication escalates the hurt feelings felt between both parties. This theme of mistranslation can be found everywhere in the current world. • 34. Sounds and Imagery of Human Emotion Sounds and Imagery of Human Emotion In Marge Piercy s The Secretary Chant , the author uses images and sound to both dehumanize and mechanize the female speaker, while John Updike uses imagery and sounds to make the Player Piano come to life. Piercy uses images of the speaker, connected with various office equipment to give a vision to the reader of a woman living her life through the office equipment that is part of her very being. Piercy uses personification in reverse and other metaphors, such as metonymy, and paradox, to give an actual picture of the office machines actually performing their functions. And also through the operation of the office equipment attached to the speaker showing her only purpose in life. Sounds are ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Marge Piercy s The Secretary Chant uses sounds to show that human emotion can be filed away and replaced. In John Updike s Player Piano personification is used to wake up an inhuman piano that plays itself, sort of like the poem itself does when read aloud. Updike uses assonance and consonance in the first couple of lines to give musicality to the lines. The devices are first used with a repetition of ick sounds to mimic the keys on the piano. Onomatopoeia is used throughout the poem to as words make the sounds musically and mimic the Player Piano. The author follows those sounds with a repetition of uck sounds. There are a lot of sound going on in the first stanza, including alliteration internal rhymes, diction and meter with all coming together with the smooth s sounds a pleasant melody. Updike uses a connotation for life when the speaker says: Light footed, my steel feelers flicker (line 3). The connotation of the word flicker means life, as long as the flame is burning and the denotation means to move with a fast or jerky motion. The combination of the two meanings gives the feeling that the piano is alive. John Updike s poem, Player Piano shows through sound and images that the personification of the mechanical speaker is alive and lively. In the second and third stanza build on the ... • 36. Declarative Memory Essay How the Brain Learns As Sousa (2017) states, Learning is the process by which we acquire new knowledge and skills; memory is the process by which we retain the knowledge and skills for the future (p. 86, 87). A person has the ability to learn many things throughout his/her lifetime. Research states that a person can store unlimited amounts of information in forms of memory. Declarative and non declarative are two different types of memory that people use to learn and grasp new concepts. Both of these types of memory are used in order for a person to gain knowledge, develop habits, and build muscle memory. Declarative Memory. Declarative memory describes the remembrance of facts, names, objects, and music. Declarative memory is used in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Although, some of the categories can be challenged with research, most researchers would agree on the breakdown of these categories. Procedural memory involves any type of memory that is learned through motor and cognitive skills. These types of memory can include riding a bike, driving a car, and knowing a procedure such as a morning ritual or habit. One can do these skills without thinking too much about the activity. For example, when one first started driving, one was focused on the brake and the gas as well as driving with both hands on the wheel. After a person learns how to drive, one may forget that he/she was driving or gave no thought on what to do at a stop light. This also applies to things such as reading, writing, and differentiating various types of colors. Although there may be some thinking involved, the majority of the time one is simply using procedural memory to complete these tasks. Perceptual representation system can be a part of the procedural memory but has a slight difference. Perceptual representation can be described as the ability to put together fragmented words and to tell whether a picture/thing can exist in the real world (Sousa, 2017). As Sousa (2017) states, Classical conditioning (also called Pavlovian conditioning) occurs when a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 37. Hiatal Hernia Research Paper Hiatal Hernia The protrusion of an organ, typically the stomach, through the esophageal opening in the diaphragm (large dome shaped muscle that separates the chest from the abdomen) that allows a portion of the stomach to move up into the chest cavity. A hiatal hernia occurs when a part of the stomach pushes upward through the diaphragm, usually when a weakened muscle tissue allows the stomach to bulge up through the diaphragm. The diaphragm normally has a small opening called the hiatus, through which the esophagus passes on its way to connect to the stomach. The stomach can push through this opening and causes a hiatal hernia or hiatus hernia. It s not always clear why this happens, but pressure in the stomach and age related changes in ... • 38. The Crossing Of The Delaware And The Victory At Trenton A E s The Crossing is an exceptional dramatization of the crossing of the Delaware and the victory at Trenton. It depicts the actions that George Washington and his men took leading up to the renowned battle. The main points portrayed by the film are relatively accurate; however, there are still many historical inaccuracies. Washington s use of profanity in the film, the weather during the march to Trenton, and the flag flown by the American army are just a few. George Washington s dialogue in The Crossing is the least accurate element of the film. Washington s leadership style was the direct opposite. Nearly thirty years before the crossing of the Delaware, Washington made clear how he felt about profanity in his Rules of Civility. His twenty second rule stated: Use no reproachful language against anyone, neither curse, nor revile. Ten years later, he made this clear in his military affairs: Colonel Washington has observed that the men of his regiment are very profane and reprobate. He takes this opportunity to inform them of his great displeasure at such practices and assures them that if they do not leave them off, they shall be severely punished. The officers are desired, if they hear any man swear or make use of an oath or execration, to order the offender twenty five lashes immediately, without court martial. For the second offense, he will be more severely punished (Sparks). Washington s loathing for expletives persisted even 30 years later as seen in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
