Teachers In Hermann Hesse s Siddhartha
Siddhartha by Hermann Hesse is a novel about the spiritual journey of a man named Siddhartha whose
living in the time of Gotama Buddha. In this novel, Hesse explains in detail what Siddhartha learns as
he searches for Nirvana. For Siddhartha to learn, he needs teachers, just like everyone else if they wish
to pursue and education. There are four major teachers that Siddhartha truly takes something from,
these teachers are Govinda, Kamala, Vasudeva, and the river itself. Another important thing is the
aspect of self realization and teaching, which is ultimately what helps Siddhartha put those teachings
together and reach Nirvana. This also allows Siddhartha himself to accept his new role as a teacher to
his friend Govinda, which is the biggest ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When Siddhartha asks Kamala to be his teacher, it is a shock, specifically because he has relayed to
Govinda that he was not satisfied with the teachings of the Samanas. Nevertheless, Siddhartha follows
through and is a good student, He visited the beautiful Kamala regularly, learned the art of love in
which, more than anything else, giving and taking become one. He talked to her, learned from her,
gave her advice, received advice. She understood him better than Govinda had once done. She was
more like him (Hesse 58). This shows that Siddhartha has made a much deeper connection with
Kamala than he has anyone before. These connections then show us that Siddhartha has learned about
attachment, something that he did not have as a Samana. But, Siddhartha would always have a part of
the Samana in him, and this is relayed by Kamala when she says, She was not surprised when she
learned that Siddhartha had disappeared [...] Was he not a Samana, without a home, a pilgrim? She
had felt it more than ever at their last meeting, and in the midst of her pain at her loss, she rejoiced that
she had pressed him so close to her heart on that last occasion, had felt so completely possessed and
mastered by him (Hesse 68). In this passage, Kamala is expressing what she s learned from their
relationship, and why

Victor Salva Directing Third Jeepers Movie Summary
In Devin Faraci s article Child Molestor Victor Salva Directing Third Jeepers Creepers Movie in his
opinion, Faraci provides a detailed news report on child molestor Victor Salva being hired as the
director for the new Jeepers Creepers movie. Appalled by the news, Faraci gives a brief history of
Victor Salva s crimes and reinstates that even though contrary to the public belief that Victor Salva,
accused and having served time for his rape of 12 year old child actor Nathan Forrest Winters, star of
Salvas film Clownhouse and owning child pornography, Salva, after serving his sentence continued to
shoot films with child actors regardless of his sexual predator nature.
Faraci is open with his discontent in the industries lack of morality and sense, by allowing a child
molester and sex offender to direct and be in contact with children in his previous and future films.
Faraci is also appalled by the way the industry and the public seems to have forgotten what Salva did
and why he should never direct again, especially not if there are kids involved.

County Sheriff Research Paper
The most important local county office to me is the Sheriff. When most people think of our county
Sheriff they think of their job as writing tickets and arresting criminals; although these things are part
of their job these things are just a piece of the responsibility that Sheriffs all over the country carry.
When most people hear the word Sheriff they think something negatively. These people don t realize
everything a Sheriff does to keep us and our county safe. The Sheriff is the highest Law Enforcement
Officer in the county with authority over deputies, bailiffs, and constables. Sheriffs are elected by the
citizens of the county and are paid by the county. Sheriffs have a very important job and they also take
on many responsibilities when they are sworn in. Sheriffs have continued to uphold responsibilities
from the past but they have also expanded their duties to familiarize with today s world. Some ...

The legal system in a county relies fully on a sheriff s leadership. The county goes to their Sheriffs
often to seek out help involving security problems. Sheriffs are also looked up to for management. The

need from them. Sherriff s do many simple things such as patrolling neighborhoods for safety,
investigating complaints, and performing civil duties. They also, however, handle more serious
matters such as executing warrants, emergency response, and criminal investigations. They do all of
these things to ensure the safety of the people in their county. When I asked my county sheriff what he

Bill Cosby has been quietly dropped by Creative Artists Agency, a source at the talent agency
confirmed to BuzzFeed News Wednesday. The source said the agency, which represents some of
Hollywood s biggest actors and musicians, parted ways with Cosby at the end of last year, and
declined to comment further. Deadline first reported that Cosby was no longer a CAA client just two
days after the Associated Press published excerpts from a deposition where Cosby admitted under oath
to procuring Quaaludes intending to give them to women he wanted to have sex with. More than 35
women have alleged that the actor sexually assaulted them, and drugs figure prominently in many of

Stereotype Of The Angry Black Woman
I am loud, irate, and unapproachable. If you disrespect me, I become uncontrollable, because my only
method of communication is through deleterious speech that only escalates the situation further. I am
the angry black woman. We see this horrific stereotype almost every day on television and very
seldom notice it, because we get lost in the entertainment of it. The Angry Black Woman stereotype is
harmful to black women, young and old, because it shows us in a negative light and can control how
other and how we see ourselves. When women get angry, it s often blamed dismissively on their
monthly menstrual cycle. But imagine just how infuriating it would be if all of your negative emotions
were blamed on your year round skin tone. The stereotype of the angry black woman is a prime
example of how these categorizations function as social control mechanisms. Media constantly use
this stereotype of the angry black woman as rude, stubborn, and most of all angry. Though we all
know that most movies are fictional, they are harmful because they can demonstrate different real life
personalities. The Angry Train scene in Why Did I Get Married, displays this stereotype. In this scene,
we see Angela, Marcus wife confront her husband about his baby mama looking at her crazy. The
passengers behind Angela and Marcus asks her to quiet down, and from there, we see the angry black
woman break out, hence the scene title, Angry Train . We also hear some racist remarks from the

Throughout her life, Pauli Murray s Christian faith served as a comforting source of spiritual
nourishment and an abiding force of religious guidance. Murray s life mission of social equality and
racial justice for all led her to cofound the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE) in 1942. Simply put,

scholar Gary Dorrien, when Murray thought about King, she thought about his ethical religion how it
drove and sustained him. Her ethical example and sermons offer critical insight as a future where
America shines as a beacon of hope for a more inclusive and democratic society. During her tenure as
priest of St. Titus Episcopal Church in Durham, North Carolina, Murray had a strong sense of what
preached and what was appropriate in the pulpit. A sermon, in her Episcopalian context, was never
more than fifteen minutes and never the central thing. She was there to ask herself and help others
discern what it meant to follow Christ in the modern world. That was King s question, as Murray
emphasized. In sum, the Christian ethics of the social gospel influenced Reverend Murray s sermons

Blood Transfusion Case Study
Every day, the health care system faces many complex and controversial issues that raise unique
dilemma and most of the time this dilemma is very difficult to resolve. One of this challenging
dilemma is the refusal of blood transfusion by the patient or patient s relatives. Blood transfusion or
not is a crucial issue which creates a moral and legal dilemma for the health system; sometimes
dealing with such situation takes extra time and energy. Nevertheless, doctors and nurses are obliged

Literature Review On Promoting Mental Health And Reducing...
Literature Review
During formative years, children and adolescents spend a considerable amount of time at school
receiving instruction from an array of educators. While the continued focus of education systems is to
improve a child s academic skills, there has been a growing body of research which draws attention to
the social and emotional well being of students as well. Payton et al s (2000) article on promoting
mental health and reducing risk behavior in children and adolescents provides that SEL programs use
classroom based curriculum and instruction that center around improving emotional cognition of
children and developing pro social skills (e.g., empathy, sharing) when working with others.
Successful SEL programs decrease problem behaviors by improving positive behaviors as a
replacement, and can therefore help to further the social and emotional development of students while
improving their academics by helping them to recognize emotions and manage them as they arise. The
goal for SEL programs is to create more socially aware citizens by nurturing individuals (children and
adolescents) to have the motivation to work hard toward goals, create and maintain good personal
relationships, and later contribute to society. Although this change starts while these children are still
students, it will continue to positively affect them for the rest of their lives. Therefore, these programs
can serve to support, reinforce, and extend the learning beyond the classroom into

The Impact of Urban Legends Throughout History and Around...
The Impact of Urban Legends Throughout History and Around the World
Urban legends have always intrigued me. I am unsure if it is the scare factor that intrigues me, the way
in which some of them are told, or some of the lessons that are supposed to be taken from them but
one thing I know for sure is that I do not stand alone in this belief. In fact urban legends are told all
over the world, even in countries that many have never heard of before. Many people of all
backgrounds find them to be mystifying and sometimes even alarming. It seems as if urban legends
have the ability to draw any person in ranging from a young child to the typical adult male. Whether

With all of this information collected, I was able to begin to analyze my notes and findings. While
conducting my research, I found that urban legends have existed since the beginning of time in all
different kinds of cultures and societies around the world. One example of this would be the Incas.
The idea of urban legends in Inca society played a key role throughout many people s lives. Legends
of early rulers in Inca society were some of the most common this clearly reflecting how important the
rule of some of these leaders initially were. In fact it has been observed that these urban legends
reflect many of the preoccupations of the Incas wars and alliances, imperial expansion and dynastic
succession (Cavendish 347). Other early legends originated in the West in classical Greek and Roman
society. It has been said that when interpreting legends, Greeks themselves valued them not only as
entertaining stories, but on one level at least, as examples of the heights and depths at which human
nature is capable of reaching (Cavendish 154). A good example of this would be the Odyssey of
Odysseus. In his search for a homeland, Odysseus encountered many obstacles that

It is challenging to acquire strategic information technology (IT) alliances properly. Devoid of
appropriate outsourcing methods, the threat of occupational fraud escalates (Association of Certified

Justice is the concept of moral rightness that is based on equality, access and fairness. This means that
the law is applied equally, understood by all people and does not have a particularly harsh effect on an

Contamination can occur when transferring DNA or the collection of DNA evidence. In the case
involving Mr. Farah, he was wrongful charged of rape although he had appealed in the High Court
with the basis of the scientists not having said he was undisputedly the perpetrator. The scientists said
that it was a very small chance that it was not Mr. Farah which he argued was still a reasonable doubt.
The judges dismissed the case within twenty minutes but it was later found that the evidence was
contaminated. Other examples include R v. Rendell (1999) and R v. Carroll (2002.)Though technology

Pro and Con of Liberalized Gambling in Texas
Efforts are once again underway in the legislature to bring casino style gambling to Texas. It s an idea
that has failed in recent legislative sessions, but backers are hoping they ve found the right formula for
success in 2009.
There are many appealing arguments on the side of pro gambling groups. Keeping gambling money
that is now going to Louisiana and Oklahoma in Texas is one popular idea. Reviving the state s horse
raising industry by allowing slot machines at racetracks is another. Some advocates want to help
struggling Indian tribes develop their economies through gambling.
Opponents generally cite moral grounds for their hostility to gambling legislation. There are, however,
many fiscal arguments against gambling as well. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Additionally, this session is the first for new Texas House of Representatives Speaker Joe Straus, who
has family ties to the horse raising industry. This creates a potential conflict of interest should any bills
related to casinos at horse racing tracks come before the House. To deflect criticism, Straus has
peremptorily recused himself from any role in considering such legislation.
However, Straus created the committees which will oversee gambling issues, assigned members to
them and selected which bills are referred to which committees. So far, most of the gambling
legislation filed in the Texas House has been referred to committee. That filed in the Texas Senate,
where Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst presides, has not been referred.
To his credit, Straus did not pack any of the committees dealing with gambling. The Licensing and
Administration Committee, through which most gambling goes, retains roughly the same percentage
of members for and against gambling as the previous committee under Speaker Tom Craddick. In both
cases, the committee leaned slightly toward expanding gambling.

Great Depression Impact
The Impact of the Great Depression The Great Depression was a very influential era in American
history, affecting many future generations. One of the most prevalent impacts it had on society was the
extreme poverty that swept across the nation, affecting both people in cities and in the country. The
main cause for this poverty was the mass loss of jobs among the middle class. Millions lost their jobs
and consequently their homes. Families lived out of tents and cars in shanty towns or Hoovervilles. In
these camps, many people didn t have their basic human needs met, children and adults alike starved.
They lived in clothes that were caked in dirt and tattered, too small for growing children and too cold
for the frail elderly. Government relief programs attempted to help but offered little support to the now
impoverished families of the millions that lost everything. The spread of poverty began with the loss
of jobs. Companies could no longer afford to keep their employees and many Americans were laid off
as businesses went under. Once someone lost their job, it was near impossible to find a new one. Some
government programs attempted to provide jobs for people, but they only had a limited number of

followed; foreclosed on by the banks, the items they once purchased sold back. This left many
families with little possessions and even fewer places to turn to and many ended up in shanty towns

Adolescents Ought To Have The Right To Make Autonomous...
As Albert Einstein once said, The only source of knowledge is experience. Seeing that I agree with
Einstein, I stand in firm negation of today s resolution which states Resolved: Adolescents ought to
have the right to make autonomous medical choices. For simplicity in the debate today, I would like to
give the following definition from the Black s Law Dictionary: Adolescence is the age which follows
puberty and precedes the age of majority. It commences for males at 14, and for females at 12 year
completed. The Oxford Advanced Learner s dictionary says that the word ought is used to indicate a
desirable or expected state. Autonomous, as defined by the Oxford Dictionary of Philosophy, is having
the freedom to act independently. The negative will support the value of paternalism, which as defined
by the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy, is the interference of a state or an individual with another
person, against their will, and defended or motivated by a claim that the person interfered with will be
better off or protected from harm. The value of paternalism will be defended with the criterion of
knowledge and experience.

Standard cost of direct labour is calculated by multiplying the standard labour hour (comprised of both
the manufacturing standard hour and packing standard hour) and standard labour hour rate. Finally, to
calculate the standard cost of overhead, the overhead costs are distributed to different departments say
production department and service department which is called primary distribution and then the costs
of service departments are redistributed to production departments which is called secondary
distribution. From that, the variable and fixed overhead rate is calculated. By multiplying the rates
with the standard labour hour of a product, the fixed and variable overhead can be got. At last,
standard direct material cost, standard direct labour cost and standard overhead cost are added to get
the total standard cost of a product.
In cost variance analysis, the deviation between standard cost and actual cost of a cost element is
calculated. If actual cost is greater than the standard cost, then situation is called unfavourable and if
the actual cost is lower than the standard cost, then the situation is called favourable. By calculating
different cost variances, the company can take precautionary actions.

Feasibility of Telehealth
Health is a vital aspect of life, which is why it is important to have an access to different health care
services. The world s population is rising radically every year; thus, the demand for quality health care
services also increases. With the application of modern technology the health system has been able to
accommodate this demand in many countries through the implementation of Telehealth. In Canada,
accessibility and distribution of health care services is influenced by aspects like large landmass,
population concentration and economy and (Sevean, et. al., 2008). The feasibility of ... Show more

Through videoconferencing, Telehealth are able to give immediate diagnosis for a patient who needs
urgent care (Saqui et al., 2011). A lot of effort is involve before a patient could meet with his or her
doctor such as making an appointment, sorting his or her schedule and so on and so forth. By the time
the person with health concern meets with his or her doctor the illness might already aggravated;
consequently, the health care system through Telehealth provides a quicker and more efficient way on
determining the type and seriousness of the patients and illness without leaving the comfort of their
homes. By contacting Telehealth as soon as a person notices some irregularities in the person s normal
body functions that indicates that he may or may not be ill, enable that person who called to act
immediately preventing the illness from advancing any further or on the other hand be reassured that
there s nothing to worry about. Furthermore, Telehealth also made the monitoring on recovering
patients at their homes faster, the registered nurse in charge of monitoring the patient can guide the
patient in his recovery process through a streaming media. Any concerns that may arise in the
recovery process can be solved a lot quicker, the patient can leave a message or phoned and the health
care provider will respond to it as soon as possible stating the fact that Telehealth service is available
24 hours a day.

Using these four passages and your own knowledge, asses the view that international diplomacy failed
to achieve stability in Europe from 1919 to 1930.
According to most of the interpretations, international diplomacy wasn t the reason to why there was
stability in Europe between 1919 to 1930. After the First World War many countries were unstable and
economically drained. However the League of Nations and the Treaty of Versailles were put in place
to make sure that another war would not occur again and that Germany pays for the First World War.
According to interpretation D, the American historian Donald Kagan agrees with the statement that

He continues to say that the fact that Britain encouraged the revision of the treaty because they
believed that the treaty of Versailles was too harsh on Germany had given the Germans the impression
that they didn t feel that it was necessary to go along with it. In addition USA helped Germany pay its
reparations investment of capital in Germany in the form of the Dawes plan and Young plan. This
encouraged Germany not to take the treaty as a punishment, By the end of the 1920s Germany was
essentially free of the checks imposed on it by the Versailles treaty this was because they had joined
the league of nation in 1926, they also signed the Locarno pact in 1925 to show the rest of the world
that they could be trusted even though they weren t actually following the treaty rules the Germans

according to Kagan almost all Germans were still resentful over the territorial settlement for example
the Rhineland. This implies that no matter who had been in power that war was inevitable because the
German people were angry that they had to take the blame of the First World War. The German truly
believed that they hadn t lost the war due to the fact that most of the fighting was in France nothing

How Did Jewish Life Changed In The Shawl
A Jew life was forever changed physically and mentally after being released from the concentration
camps. The Shawl by Cynthia Ozick tells it all when Rosa explains all Jews only know about three
lives The life before, the life during, the life after (58). The life before was when every Jew had
authoritarianism over their lives by the Nazi s. For instance, having to wear yellow stars, forbidden to
have cars, go to any type of entertainment or pubic events and forbidden to visit non Jew homes. Jews
were even removed from their own homes and put into ghettos. They were basically treated like

Descartes Meditation 4 Essay
By the start of Meditation Four Descartes has established the reliability of his clear and distinct
criterion of knowledge, and he has concluded that he exists as an essentially thinking thing and that
the idea of an infinite, perfect being entails God s existence. Descartes has also eliminated concern
about being systematically deceived, since acting in such a way would be indicative of some
deficiency rather than the exercise of some power, and God is perfect. This generates further
questions, as humans do regularly judge falsely, even without the meddling of a malicious, deceptive
being (99). Given God s nature, attributing error to him is unacceptable, but, conversely, how could
humans be blamed for the faulty faculty of judgement that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Descartes begins by distinguishing the real and positive idea of God from the opposite negative idea
of nothingness, placing himself in the middle of this spectrum (99). He is finite and imperfect but, as
God s creation, his nature contains nothing which itself facilitates mistakes. Since he exists between
God and nothingness, however, he also participate[s] in nothingness or non being (99 100). Errors of
judgement, then, must stem from nothingness, the absolute absence of all perfection. Mistakes are not
things resulting from an error making faculty dependent on God, but instead lackings of a limited,
fallible faculty of judgement. This answer, Descartes admits, does not fully address the problem, since
a lacking is not a pure negation and implies that something which ought to be present is missing.
Could God have failed to grant some perfection that we should possess? Descartes contrasts his own
weak and limited nature with God s immense, incomprehensible and infinite nature, deeming that God
s reasoning is beyond the scope of his understanding and that, feasibly, a world with errors is best
when examined in its entirety

Final Exam Essay The reflection quote at the beginning of the exam instructions is an interesting
thought. I see myself reflecting more on the life aspects of this quote versus the complexities of how it
affects my writing abilities. I entered into this course with few expectations of my writing abilities
after my last composition course. There are still more flaws in my writing abilities than perfections.
However, the confidence has been built to be able to complete writing assignments for a future
employer. My process in writing an essay, report, or proposal has remained the same from the first
composition course to this technical course. I can write adequately but do still struggle with different
aspects of the composition process. My expectations starting this class in May were extremely low
after the struggles with the first composition course I completed. My goal was to do my best and just
try to maintain a passing grade. However, this course was different, there was a practicality involved
that I crave to do my best work. It was interesting to put together the financial plans of a non existent
company that in realty will never come to pass. The TV show Shark Tank makes these presentations
seem easy. But it does not show the many hours the owners must put in to make their presentations
perfect. The PowerPoint presentation assignment took me several hours and retakes to complete. In
addition, the hours of research on long arm quilting machines to make sure that my

The Debate Of Strategic Nuclear Policy
Until the 1950s, the discussion of strategic nuclear policy was embryonic at best, and many strategic
developments went largely unrecognized. The post second world war era started with a US monopoly
on nuclear weapons, however the Soviets soon broke this and both sides developed hydrogen bombs
in the early 1950s. In the early 1950s, the US followed the policy of massive retaliation. However, by
the late 1950s, with the advent of the modern missile based on V 2 technology from the end of WWII
and further dramatized by the Soviet launching of sputnik in 1957, the US was forced to reconsider its
nuclear doctrine. One school of thought believed that a delicate balance had to be struck with the
Soviets. The US soon formulated the policy of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Robert McNamara, then defense secretary, stated in a speech in 1962 principle military objectives in
the event of a nuclear war against the NATO alliance should be destruction of an enemies military
forces, not his civilian population. Five years later, towards the end of his tenure as secretary of
defense, McNamara stressed now it is imperative to understand that assured destruction is the whole
essence of the deterrence concept. It means the certainty of suicide to the aggressor, not merely to his
military forces but to society as a whole. This shows the smart and clear shift in McNamara leaning
towards the limiter s school. (The change was primarily in declaratory policy, as in what was said
about nuclear weapons in plans; the actual nuclear policy of the US under McNamara s control
emphasized the targeting of military installations, not civilian populations) The soviets had begun to
build very large warheads, and many of them put even well protected sites in additional risk. Perhaps
more important, however, was the advent of MIRV, Multiple Independently Targetable Reentry
Vehicle meant that one missile with several warheads could independently target multiple missiles.
For a variety of reasons, rather than becoming another stride in the arms race, ABM development in
the late 60s and early 70s provided an impetus for the first US/soviet arms control agreement.
Together with the ABM restrictions, the first strategic arms limitation treaty SALT put the first

Rap As An Art Of Racism
All of the rappers shown in the documentary make music and use rap as an art of storytelling and form
of expression of what they have to go through and their struggle in their daily lives. Some of the social
issues and grievances that had been brought up are issues of gun violence, police brutality,
gentrification, economic discrepancy and immigration policies. All of these social issues and
grievances are issues that affected the society, especially those living in the malnourished
neighborhoods featured in the documentary. Some of them talked about how they watched their
friends died in the streets. For example, one of the rappers named YD showed the place where his
friends died. Issues of police brutality brought up so many times, especially in the lyrics written by

Miami police officers beat a black businessman and killed him in the process. We can see how each
rapper in this documentary expressed the problems that they faced from police brutality to

Descriptive Essay About Country
Often when the word country is brought up, people think of big trucks, the song Big Green Tractor by
Jason Aldean, taking a four wheeler through the mud, and sometimes even a confederate flag.
However, country can not be bought at a store. It s something to be born with. Country isn t just a
bunch of dumb rednecks, as it is normally associated with. Country runs much deeper. To me, Country
is a way of life that makes yourself work the hardest you can, love the most you can, and create
memories in the great outdoors that can never be forgotten. One of my favorite songs of all time
comes from Luke Bryan; That s What Country is . In the song, Bryan says It aint a rebel flag you
bought at the mall it s a hide away bed in an old horse stall, two kids getting caught stealing a Boones
Farm kiss. This is my favorite verse because Bryan takes the highly thought belief that country is
defined by rebel flags and simply says that it is not true. Instead of a confederate flag labeling country,
country is two kids making memories that they will never forget (Even thought it might not be
completely legal). Later in the verse, Bryan says It aint a John Deere cap that s never fell in the cotton,
it s a Jimmie Rodgers song that was long forgotten. Its homemade peach ice cream on sunburnt lips,
that s what country is. This relates to me directly. Every year my family and I will go out to the strip of
apple trees on the farm, pick the apples, peel them, and my dad cooks up applesauce

The play of Inspector Calls by J. B. Priestley is made dramatic because it is all about an investigation

Mrs Birling changes dramatically in this section because as the inspector starts to question her, her
replies show that she is confident and proud: Yes, we ve done a great deal of useful work in helping
deserving cases. When the Inspector asks her about the name Eva used to approach the charity, her
reply to the Inspector shows she is certain that she is innocent: I think it was simply a piece of gross
impertinence quite deliberate and naturally that was on of the things that prejudiced me against her
case. At this point Mrs Birling could also fold her arms as she says this and look very smug. By doing
this, she can express the feeling that she is pleased with herself and is not regretting her decision.
However, as the Inspector begins to discuss her reasons for refusing to help Eva, Mrs Birling chooses
not to answer: I don t think we need to discuss it. I would direct the actress to look hard at the
Inspector and slightly raise her voice as if she was giving him an order. Further on when the Inspector

The Main Elements Of Society For Aristotle And Plato
Provence Barnouin 10/14/16
Prof. Hittinger
Contemporary Civilization: Idea Paper 1
Households (or families) are one of the key elements of society for both Aristotle and Plato. Family is
the first form in society of association between men as it answers man s natural needs, and instincts.
As Aristotle explains, the coupling which necessity gives rise [to] is that between those who are
unable to exist without one another, in other words man is a being that is, by nature, social and
political. Association is a natural phenomenon, which declines in interdependent forms such as the
family, the village, and finally the city. However, it would be an error to assume that each form is not
fundamentally different from one another. In Politics, Aristotle criticizes Plato s assumption that a city
must strive to be a unit, because beyond a certain point, city will be reduced to family and family to
individual. [Book II, 1261a] Indeed, if a city state were to strive towards unity it would resemble a
household, since he holds the household to be of higher degree in unity, but by assumption, a city state
is different that a household.
By uncovering and comparing the differences between the city and the household in Politics, Ethics
and The Republic, we will first explain Aristotle s criticism and Plato s potential response to his
student. This will lead us to understand the relationship between the city state and the household and
explain whether the family is a natural

Elbow amputation is an amputation from the supracondylar region to the axillary fold

with loosing it above the elbow. The ability to preserve the length of the limb allows for better
movement, and enhances the fit of the prosthesis (emedicine.medscape.com). The more proximal the
amputation the less functional the stump will be. This amputation will cause the loss of the hand, wrist
elbow, but good shoulder function will continue( Deverix, Papdapoulos, p.656). The most common

What Was The Impact Of The Bus Boycott
The Bus Boycott of 1955 1956 was a U.S Civil Rights movement that took place in Montgomery,
Alabama. African Americans all over Montgomery refused to ride the city bus to demonstrate a
peaceful protest against racial segregation. Four days before the protest, an African American women,
Rosa Park, refused to leave her seat on the bus for a white man. This led to her arrest and finement;
this triggered the boycott to begin. This event was one of the many Civil Rights movement. This
caused many important figures to become involved, such as Martin Luther King Jr. He lead the
African Americans to justice and gave his followers the courage to stand up for their rights instead of

The main objective and goals for the black to accomplish from the protest are to receive well and
respected treatment by the bus operators and its riders. Also, that riders are free to sit as anywhere as
they like on a first come, first served standard. They wanted the blacks to be able to be seated from the
back toward the front of the bus and vise versa for the whites. Finally, they demanded that Negro bus
operators were employed on mainly Negro routes. Throughout the protest, their main focus shifted to
abolishing segregation altogether. King made this pretty clear during his speech he once gave called I
Have A Dream. during 1963. one day right there in Alabama little black boys and black girls will be
able to join hands with little white boys and white girls as sisters and brothers. (King). Throughout this
process, the blacks did face a lot of negative effects. Many African Americans boycotters and riders
were shot throughout this event. Many were found dead in mainly dark areas and alleys of the city.
Violence went on with bombing and murder. African American churches were bombed as a threat
towards Black boycotters. Ralph Abernathy s, a leader of the African American civil rights movement,
house was bombed by seven white men. These seven men were arrested although never declared
guilty.(Sigmond) This shows the inequality between whites and blacks too. The

The Characteristics Of Cultural Traits Of Cultures
Have you thought of how many varieties of cultures you have? All of your customs are unique and is
formed in your activities that you adore. Everyone has a culture but is manifested in many ways.
According to the text What is Cultural Identity Trumbull and Pacheco declares that you can imagine
culture as invisible webs composed of values, beliefs, ideas about appropriate behavior, and socially
constructed truths (springboard 2010). Traditions define our ethnic backgrounds with many
constructed acts to the meaning of our lives. Cultural Traits govern our direct perspectives. Two
cultural traits that will be described in this essay is language and foods. The first trait is language.
Language is communication either written or spoken and is part of our cultural identity. Language
shows who you are and how you express them. In the article An Indian Father s Plea it states
Windwolf has had trouble writing his name on a piece of paper, but he knows how to say it and many
other things in several different Indian languages (lake).Sometimes learning a new language could be
challenging but in the process you will grasp the idea of what that new language is. Many are exposed
to many languages, for example, I speak fluent English, but can t speak any other language. The
language that my family speaks is Filipino and Hawaiian. My father speaks Hawaiian. I d like to
inspire and encourage others to keep the Hawaiian language alive. In 2001, native speakers of Hawaii

Article Rebuttal
Marriage is not about a piece of paper, a ring, or sexual preference. It has never been about any of
these matters, and should not be considered so. Marriage is the commitment between two people who
love each other unconditionally. According to Psychology Today, marriage is the process by which
two people who love each other make their relationship public, official, and permanent (Psychology
Today, 2002) . Anyone can get married, but it takes dedication and work to make a marriage last and
be successful. This paper will specifically discuss an article written by Jan LaRue, Why Homosexual
Marriage Is Wrong and what ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In saying this she is being selective to support her argument, and in doing so is being confirmation
biased. Who is to say that homosexuality is more unholy, or wrong, than divorce, adultery, and lying?
Logical Fallacies
The fallacy that was used in this article is false attribution because of the biased attributes in the
argument. For example, saying that marriage has to be limited to only a man and a woman is not
discriminating, yet it clearly is because of the biased feelings of homosexual relationships. Another
type of fallacy that was used is the fallacy of ambiguity; when an abstract belief is treated as if it were
concrete evidence. Religion is not based on scientific concrete evidence, but merely a belief in
something. The Bible has been written and rewritten by man, and has lack of evidence supporting that
there is a God.
Conclusion
Many base their idea of right and wrong on biased conclusions and/or religion. This makes the issue
hard to decipher between who is right and wrong. Biased conclusions do not make the idea correct.
The idea that only a man and a woman can fall in love with each other, and not a man and a man or a
woman and a woman, is based on favoritisms in how someone feels about the issue. Articles, such as
the one above, have the intentions of sharing their beliefs in the hope of others adopting that particular
belief. The question that should be presented is,

In this novel, Hesse explains in detail what Siddhartha learns as he searches for Nirvana. For Siddhartha to learn, he needs teachers, just like everyone else if they wish to pursue and education. There are four major teachers that Siddhartha truly takes something from, these teachers are Govinda, Kamala, Vasudeva, and the river itself. When Siddhartha asks Kamala to be his teacher, it is a shock, specifically because he has relayed to Govinda that he was not satisfied with the teachings of the Samanas. Nevertheless, Siddhartha follows through and is a good student, He visited the beautiful Kamala regularly, learned the art of love in which, more than anything else, giving and taking become one. He talked to her, learned from her, gave her advice, received advice. She understood him better than Govinda had once done. She was more like him (Hesse 58). This shows that Siddhartha has made a much deeper connection with Kamala than he has anyone before. These connections then show us that Siddhartha has learned about attachment, something that he did not have as a Samana. But, Siddhartha would always have a part of the Samana in him, and this is relayed by Kamala when she says, She was not surprised when she learned that Siddhartha had disappeared [...] Was he not a Samana, without a home, a pilgrim? She had felt it more than ever at their last meeting, and in the midst of her pain at her loss, she rejoiced that she had pressed him so close to her heart on that last occasion, had felt so completely possessed and mastered by him (Hesse 68). When most people think of our county Sheriff they think of their job as writing tickets and arresting criminals; although these things are part of their job these things are just a piece of the responsibility that Sheriffs all over the country carry. If you disrespect me, I become uncontrollable, because my only method of communication is through deleterious speech that only escalates the situation further. I am the angry black woman. We see this horrific stereotype almost every day on television and very seldom notice it, because we get lost in the entertainment of it. The Angry Black Woman stereotype is harmful to black women, young and old, because it shows us in a negative light and can control how other and how we see ourselves. When women get angry, it s often blamed dismissively on their monthly menstrual cycle. But imagine just how infuriating it would be if all of your negative emotions were blamed on your year round skin tone. The stereotype of the angry black woman is a prime example of how these categorizations function as social control mechanisms. Media constantly use this stereotype of the angry black woman as rude, stubborn, and most of all angry. Though we all know that most movies are fictional, they are harmful because they can demonstrate different real life personalities. The Angry Train scene in Why Did I Get Married, displays this stereotype. In this scene, we see Angela, Marcus wife confront her husband about his baby mama looking at her crazy. The passengers behind Angela and Marcus asks her to quiet down, and from there, we see the angry black woman break out, hence the scene title, Angry Train . Literature Review During formative years, children and adolescents spend a considerable amount of time at school receiving instruction from an array of educators. While the continued focus of education systems is to improve a child s academic skills, there has been a growing body of research which draws attention to the social and emotional well being of students as well. Payton et al s (2000) article on promoting mental health and reducing risk behavior in children and adolescents provides that SEL programs use classroom based curriculum and instruction that center around improving emotional cognition of children and developing pro social skills (e.g., empathy, sharing) when working with others. Successful SEL programs decrease problem behaviors by improving positive behaviors as a replacement, and can therefore help to further the social and emotional development of students while improving their academics by helping them to recognize emotions and manage them as they arise. The goal for SEL programs is to create more socially aware citizens by nurturing individuals (children and adolescents) to have the motivation to work hard toward goals, create and maintain good personal relationships, and later contribute to society. Although this change starts while these children are still students, it will continue to positively affect them for the rest of their lives. Therefore, these programs can serve to support, reinforce, and extend the learning beyond the classroom into ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

One of the most prevalent impacts it had on society was the extreme poverty that swept across the nation, affecting both people in cities and in the country. Descartes Meditation 4 Essay By the start of Meditation Four Descartes has established the reliability of his clear and distinct criterion of knowledge, and he has concluded that he exists as an essentially thinking thing and that the idea of an infinite, perfect being entails God s existence. Descartes has also eliminated concern about being systematically deceived, since acting in such a way would be indicative of some deficiency rather than the exercise of some power, and God is perfect. This generates further questions, as humans do regularly judge falsely, even without the meddling of a malicious, deceptive being (99). Given God s nature, attributing error to him is unacceptable, but, conversely, how could humans be blamed for the faulty faculty of judgement that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Descartes begins by distinguishing the real and positive idea of God from the opposite negative idea of nothingness, placing himself in the middle of this spectrum (99). He is finite and imperfect but, as God s creation, his nature contains nothing which itself facilitates mistakes. Since he exists between God and nothingness, however, he also participate[s] in nothingness or non being (99 100). Errors of judgement, then, must stem from nothingness, the absolute absence of all perfection. Mistakes are not things resulting from an error making faculty dependent on God, but instead lackings of a limited, fallible faculty of judgement. This answer, Descartes admits, does not fully address the problem, since a lacking is not a pure negation and implies that something which ought to be present is missing. Could God have failed to grant some perfection that we should possess? Descartes contrasts his own weak and limited nature with God s immense, incomprehensible and infinite nature, deeming that God s reasoning is beyond the scope of his understanding and that, feasibly, a world with errors is best when examined in its entirety ... The post second world war era started with a US monopoly on nuclear weapons, however the Soviets soon broke this and both sides developed hydrogen bombs in the early 1950s. In the early 1950s, the US followed the policy of massive retaliation. However, by the late 1950s, with the advent of the modern missile based on V 2 technology from the end of WWII and further dramatized by the Soviet launching of sputnik in 1957, the US was forced to reconsider its nuclear doctrine. Robert McNamara, then defense secretary, stated in a speech in 1962 principle military objectives in the event of a nuclear war against the NATO alliance should be destruction of an enemies military forces, not his civilian population. Five years later, towards the end of his tenure as secretary of defense, McNamara stressed now it is imperative to understand that assured destruction is the whole essence of the deterrence concept. It means the certainty of suicide to the aggressor, not merely to his military forces but to society as a whole. This shows the smart and clear shift in McNamara leaning towards the limiter s school. (The change was primarily in declaratory policy, as in what was said about nuclear weapons in plans; the actual nuclear policy of the US under McNamara s control emphasized the targeting of military installations, not civilian populations) The soviets had begun to build very large warheads, and many of them put even well protected sites in additional risk. Perhaps more important, however, was the advent of MIRV, Multiple Independently Targetable Reentry Vehicle meant that one missile with several warheads could independently target multiple missiles. For a variety of reasons, rather than becoming another stride in the arms race, ABM development in the late 60s and early 70s provided an impetus for the first US/soviet arms control agreement. Descriptive Essay About Country Often when the word country is brought up, people think of big trucks, the song Big Green Tractor by Jason Aldean, taking a four wheeler through the mud, and sometimes even a confederate flag. However, country can not be bought at a store. It s something to be born with. Country isn t just a bunch of dumb rednecks, as it is normally associated with. Country runs much deeper. To me, Country is a way of life that makes yourself work the hardest you can, love the most you can, and create memories in the great outdoors that can never be forgotten. One of my favorite songs of all time comes from Luke Bryan; That s What Country is . In the song, Bryan says It aint a rebel flag you bought at the mall it s a hide away bed in an old horse stall, two kids getting caught stealing a Boones Farm kiss. This is my favorite verse because Bryan takes the highly thought belief that country is defined by rebel flags and simply says that it is not true. Instead of a confederate flag labeling country, country is two kids making memories that they will never forget (Even thought it might not be completely legal). Later in the verse, Bryan says It aint a John Deere cap that s never fell in the cotton, it s a Jimmie Rodgers song that was long forgotten. Its homemade peach ice cream on sunburnt lips, that s what country is. This relates to me directly. The Main Elements Of Society For Aristotle And Plato Provence Barnouin 10/14/16 Prof. Hittinger Contemporary Civilization: Idea Paper 1 Households (or families) are one of the key elements of society for both Aristotle and Plato. Family is the first form in society of association between men as it answers man s natural needs, and instincts. As Aristotle explains, the coupling which necessity gives rise [to] is that between those who are unable to exist without one another, in other words man is a being that is, by nature, social and political. Association is a natural phenomenon, which declines in interdependent forms such as the family, the village, and finally the city. However, it would be an error to assume that each form is not fundamentally different from one another. In Politics, Aristotle criticizes Plato s assumption that a city must strive to be a unit, because beyond a certain point, city will be reduced to family and family to individual. [Book II, 1261a] Indeed, if a city state were to strive towards unity it would resemble a household, since he holds the household to be of higher degree in unity, but by assumption, a city state is different that a household. By uncovering and comparing the differences between the city and the household in Politics, Ethics and The Republic, we will first explain Aristotle s criticism and Plato s potential response to his student. This will lead us to understand the relationship between the city state and the household and explain whether the family is a natural ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Who is to say that homosexuality is more unholy, or wrong, than divorce, adultery, and lying? Logical Fallacies The fallacy that was used in this article is false attribution because of the biased attributes in the argument. For example, saying that marriage has to be limited to only a man and a woman is not discriminating, yet it clearly is because of the biased feelings of homosexual relationships. Another type of fallacy that was used is the fallacy of ambiguity; when an abstract belief is treated as if it were concrete evidence. Religion is not based on scientific concrete evidence, but merely a belief in something. The Bible has been written and rewritten by man, and has lack of evidence supporting that there is a God. Conclusion Many base their idea of right and wrong on biased conclusions and/or religion. This makes the issue hard to decipher between who is right and wrong. Biased conclusions do not make the idea correct. The idea that only a man and a woman can fall in love with each other, and not a man and a man or a woman and a woman, is based on favoritisms in how someone feels about the issue.
