Overt Discrimination In The Workplace
Employment discrimination in the United States is unlawful by Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of
1964; employers, employer agencies, and labor organizations are prohibited to discriminate against a
person based on race, color, sex, religion, and national origin (Belton, 1978). Although, Title VII
passed half a century ago, sex discrimination is still present in the workplace. Feminist theory attempts
describing and reveling overt and covert sex discrimination during the hiring process, exploring its
possible origins and causes, and reducing or eradicating it from the workplace (Reskin, 2000).
To attempt reducing sex discrimination, the first step is for society to recognize its existence according
to the feminist theory (Reskin, 2000). A business woman is passed on a promotion within her
company, for a man got it, although she has seniority and more experience; and a male nurse is passed
on head of nurses promotion, for a female nurse, according to the hospital, has more nurturing traits,
although he is as friendly, nurturing, and caring, without mentioning, he also has seniority and more
experience. These are examples of overt discrimination since they are obvious, in both situations, by
each person knowing employment qualifications and longevity of the other. Similarly, there are
examples of covert discrimination; however, these are difficult to notice. Both men and women might
be discriminated against if they are applying for an out of role job, meaning, the

Fly In The Fly
Bugs and insects are often used as literary devices in very different ways, yet they mostly have some
kind of connection to the protagonists lives, their emotions and their character traits. The insect s
outward appearance stands in sharp contrast to that of a human being in fiction, yet its character traits
or emotions are personified in order to be similar to those of the human protagonist. This contrast is
what makes stories like these so effective. This is, to a certain extent, also the case in The Fly by
Katherine Mansfield even though here the human protagonist, the boss, is the one actively projecting
his inner self onto the insect. In fact, it is possible to say that the fly is used as a reflector: it reflects
the boss s idealised ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It is important to mention that the only way the boss is able to process his son s death is through
crying but one day he fails to cry, starting the inevitable road to his spiritual death (cf. Boyle 183).
More indications of the relation between the failure of the boss and that of the fly are found on page
164: Nothing happened or was likely to happen (Mansfield 164). This can be seen as a reference to the
tears the boss ceases to cry and is most likely not going to be able to cry ever again. The aspect of
failure also becomes obvious when looking at the way the fly is described throughout the last two
pages: It was ready for life again (Mansfield 163). This shows not only the fly s victory of surviving
the fall into the inkpot but also the new hope the boss finds in observing the fly and testing its limits.
This hope, however, dies when the fly dies. As mentioned before, the boss experiences his spiritual
death (Boyle 183) at the end of the story which is emphasised and illustrated by the death of the fly.
The story, therefore, doesn t seem to be mainly about the death of the fly really but about how the fly s
death stands for the boss s spiritual death. It is mainly caused by his inability to properly grieve for his
son anymore, which leads him to loose all kinds of human feelings. Boyle examines the aspect of the
spiritual death in greater detail and explains the connection between the blots of ink and the boss s
grief very well, saying the struggles of the fly with the blots of ink, in fact, parallel the struggles of the
boss with his grief for his son (184). According to Boyle, the love for the boss s son could be
substituted with the grief he feels after his son s death. (185) It is therefore logical to assume that the
moment he stopped grieving, he stopped loving to a

Hr Professionalism
Explanation of the 4 aspects of HR Professionalism
Johns and Perkins (2012) summarise HR Professionalism as having 4 concentric circles and these
being; managing self, managing in group/teams, managing upwards and managing across the
organisation.
The first aspect, Managing self is about the skills, knowledge and behaviours one has. Whilst the
second aspect Managing in groups and teams means a HR specialist can work with others and solve
problems.
The third, when Managing Upwards Johns and Perkins (2012) explain that HR professionals will be

Comparing The Theme Of Love In A Midsummer Night s Dream
To Be In Love With an Ass, Literally
Could you ever imagine yourself falling in love with an ass? No, not the jerkish guy down the street, a
literal ass. Can you imagine four days filled with declarations of love, hate, curses, cures, disgust, and
delight? An ultimatum so great it pits two people married for centuries against each other? Love is in
the air, and so is hate in Shakespeare s A Midsummer Night s Dream. Unfortunate circumstances fall
upon seven lovers in the woods one night, proving that love is more fickle than true.
Outside circumstances often play a role in love, but in the case of Titania and Bottom, an outside
circumstance brought them together completely. A flower hit by cupid s bow has the power to cause a
person to fall ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The King and Queen seemingly have been married forever, and most likely have been fighting for
forever as well. Oberon and Titania are fairies, meaning they help bring balance to nature, but they
have been neglecting their duties because of their argument. Titiana vents, And never, since the middle
summer s spring, Met we on hill, in dale, forest, or mead, By paved fountain or rush brook, or in the
beached margent of the sea (2.1.82). While they argue and avoid each other the nature they are
supposed to be taking care of is beginning to show the neglect, And, through this distemperature, we
see The season alter: hoary headed frosts Fall in the fresh lap of the crimson rose, and on old Heim s
thin and icy crown an odorous chaplet of sweet summer buds is, as in mockery, set (2.1.108). The
reason the King and Queen are fighting is rather strange, Oberon wants a mortal boy whom Titania
has taken as her ward. Oberon gives no reason as to why he wants the boy so bad, he probably just
wants him because Tatiana loves him so much. Titana befriended a mortal woman and spent hours
gossiping with her, laying on the sands by the shore, and when the mortal woman got pregnant and
died during childbirth, Titans made a promise to raise the child. Oberon was annoyed with Tatiana s
stubbornness and set out to make her pay by cursing her to fall in love with something humiliating,

The Education System Of India
Education system in India dates back to the Indus Valley civilization which saw the birth of new
culture. This period is referred as the Vedic age, as the Vedas were composed during this time. The
Ramayana and the Mahabharata gives lot of information on the life of the people and the education
system. We learn in the Vedas about the gurukul system which played an important role during that
period.
A child was sent to the gurukul at a tender age of 7 where he learnt different aspects of education,
warfare etc. the education system also throws light on the relationship between the guru(teacher) and
the shishya(student). The students were very obedient to their gurus. The education was free of cost

The Indian students never have intellectual courage because they are in an environment of those
thoughts which they are compelled to learn. Thus they lose their ideas and never knowing the
perspective of their growth. I would like to highlight a situation where a student was forced to take up
engineering which was not his cup of tea. He had a passion for fashion designing which was not liked
by his parents reason being a social status. Here it is important that the parents think beyond society,
social status and respect all professions equally as every profession has its own pros and cons.
The government schools in India is an important point of concern as these schools were leading once
upon a time. The debate continues regarding the education system to be government or private. The
increasing privatization of schools has led to the decrease in the number of students enrolled in
government schools. The reason being private schools have better infrastructure, facilities and well
certified teachers in comparison to government schools. People below poverty line also prefer private
schools thinking that the child would support them in future. The future of government engineering
colleges is also pathetic though there are many facilities important being RESERVATION . Inspite of
this the students focus themselves on private colleges because of the quality of education, good
faculty, proper infrastructure, labs and spacious campus.

The King of Kings
In the Bible, Jesus Christ, the embodiment of the Christian God is described as the King of Kings .
Christians since before the dream of Constantine have believed God and Christ constitute a ruler of
the universe. Anglo Saxon society perceived the Christian God in the mold of the pre Christian
Germanic tradition of kingship. The Anglo Saxon perception of God as a king in the Germanic
tradition has tremendous significance on late Anglo Saxon politics. The inclusion of the Christian
deity in the leadership hierarchy of Anglo Saxon society contributed to changes in how earthly kings
themselves were perceived.
Tacitus s Germania offers insight into value system of the continental pagan ancestors of the Anglo
Saxons three centuries before Horsa and Hengist. Those peoples, collectively referred to as the
Germani are a warrior society. As a culture, they valued no trait higher than bravery in battle and
perceived cowardice as a supreme disgrace . On the subject of the Germani leaders Tacitus wrote,
They choose their kings for their noble birth, their leader for their valor. But even the power of the
kings is not absolute or arbitrary. As for the leaders, it is for example rather than their authority which
wins special distinction . These war leaders leading by example inspired fierce loyalty from those
under their command. Tacitus wrote On the field of battle it is a disgrace to the leader to be surpassed
in valour by his companions, to the companions not to equal the valour of

Chinese Art During the Early Empire Essay
Chinese Art During the Early Empire
In this essay, I will look at the outpouring of thought, art and literature during the early empire. More
so though, I will focus on what factors led to this renewed focus on culture in the early empire. It
would seem that there were several factor which would lead to this renewed interest in culture in early
China, but the most significant of these factors would be the re establishment of a strong central
government. This re establishment of a strong central government laid the foundation for cultural
growth. It brought with it prosperity to China, through improved infrastructure, such as the canals and
graineries. As a result of these improvements, China flourished both economically, ... Show more

Privatization of American Prisons
Introduction: In America today, there is a trend in corrections of taking the duty of running prisons out
of the hands of state and federal authorities and contracting it out to private organizations. Along with
the drift to privatization is a plethora of research pertaining to the subject taking many different
approaches to analyzing the effectiveness. The majority of research focuses on one of three areas. The
first questioning whether or not it is cost effective to make the switch. The second being the ethical
problems that can and have risen from the privatization of prisons. The third being a wide painting of
the change and the implications it has on society as a whole. When the changes came about, there

In this form, nongovernmental entities own, staff, and operate correctional facilities. (Austin, 2001)
Financial Cost/benefit of privatization: The bulk of the research was performed in the late 90s after
many years had passed since the implementation of privatized prisons got a substantial boost in1988
(Austin, 2001). Much of the literature centers on the cost effectiveness of contracting out prisons. The
main focus of the research is first and foremost, are they saving money by contracting out. Second, if
they are saving money, is it enough money to justify the other problems that naturally accompany the
for profit prisons model. It is important to understand what it means to contract correctional
institutions out to private ownership. Most of the current prisons that have been contracted out run on
a similar contract. A private entity either builds a prison to house inmates or is given control of an
already built prison. The private corporation is then paid a base dollar amount for each prisoner they
house in the facility. In 2001, Emerging issues on privatized prisons found many striking statistics
concerning the privatization of prisons. It is estimated that worldwide there were 184 privately
operated correctional facilities. Within the United States, a total of 158 private correctional facilities
are operating. A substantial portion of the worlds privately owned correctional facilities are in

Utopian Architecture Research Paper
Contemporary Utopia
Utopia ideals and projects are barely in the discussion of contemporary architecture projects and
articles. Does that mean utopian ideology and thinking are invalid in the settings of contemporary
cities? Utopian method to approach urban planning are rarely introduced in the current projects.
Currently, city planners and designers seem to have no interest in understanding the relationship
between utopian thinking and urban planning. It all seems that the lack of interest in utopian thinking
in the present days are result of the evolution of time, as present days no longer has the ability to be
suited for bold thinking compared with preindustrial cities. Spaces are more defined by social means,
practical implications and urban ecologies.

that planners can begin to think about the new possibilities of human life. The utopian city model is to

construction. These projects are the means to escape monotonous life, and its continuation may lead to
boredom and frustration. Through Utopia s urban projects, humans can realize that the material world

The Need For A Job For American Society
The need for a job in American society is vital and not having one in today s society can cause major
financial problems for an individual or a whole family. An average American, typically works eight
hour shifts and sometimes even put in overtime to meet their needs. After an exhausting day at work,
people tend to get hungry and the infamous question of what to eat begins to occupy every inner
thought. Some are not only wondering what they should eat for dinner, but most of these workers also
have a family to come home to and feed. People come home tired, lacking motivation to do anything,
and the thought of having to prepare dinner for themselves or their family sounds discouraging. On the
way home from work, everyone is bound to see a fast food restaurant of some sort, waiting for
potential consumers in the street corner, illuminated by an infamous neon sign. The temptation to stop
by and grab a quick meal is overwhelming, but there is always one jumbled up thought that suggests
preparing a meal at home would be wiser. The typical American citizen has to fight a mental battle on
deciding where they should take their health and how it will benefit them in the long run. Though
most individuals who visit these fast food establishments can care less about the nutrition value behind
their favorite meals, it is an important component to consider when buying at these places. With
working from nine to five and coming home with the potential to eat everything in sight, if it

small fights with almost all of the different group members. Teddy hinders group development by
forcing the group to devote time and effort to control his behavior.
Chris remains one of the leaders, but even at times presents a problem to the group. He has a very
tough attitude and almost gets his eye burned out in the beginning trying to stand up against bigger,
tougher kids. At the end of the movie he almost gets attacked with a knife for mouthing off to the

really showed his leadership skills. Gordie seems to have a lot of personal issues with finding this
dead body because of how often he thinks about his older brother who had passed away. Gordie really
takes this trip/adventure personally mainly because of how close he feels to this dead body. Only a

The Greek Parthenon vs the Roman Pantheon Essay
The Greek Parthenon vs the Roman Pantheon
Imagine asking a five year old to draw a picture of a house. A native Floridian probably wouldn t draw
the typical split plan design with a tile roof and a screened in lanai. The extent of the child s artistic
ability would probably consist of a box with a triangle on top of it. As fundamental as it sounds, the
use of this structure has a long history dating back to ancient Greece. The classical Greek temple, the
Parthenon, made use of this design and influenced (the still rather different) Roman Pantheon.
These buildings are excellent examples of how architectural style reflects the culture of its creators

The Parthenon was made entirely out of marble, but it was either cheaply made or the technology was
not advanced enough to make it smooth and time resistant. Today, the temple lies in ruins. The
foundation and many of the columns still stand, but the roof and carved designs are all but missing.
The Pantheon, built in Rome around AD 126, is in great condition yet today. More massive than the
Parthenon, the exterior of the Pantheon still looks smoother. The eight Corinthian columns that line
the front entrance are not as intrusive as the Doric columns of ancient Greece. They are thinner and
ornately decorated. Also, the Pantheon gains its giant size because of its high walls, not by resting its
foundation on a mountainous staircase. Again, this makes the temple more delicate than the Parthenon
and this difference also infers that the Romans felt much more secure from the dangers of invasion.
Unlike the Parthenon that was destroyed by enemies, the Pantheon still stands content. Continuing
inside, the walls of the Pantheon are intrinsically a genius of splendor. They are decorated with ornate
designs of Corinthian columns and mock windows. The beauty of the three dimensional wall fixtures
is exemplified by sunlight let in by the large oculus at its zenith.
Although the Parthenon has not survived time, its design has greatly affected our modern world. The

Achieving The Same Mission At The Kimberly Clark Andean...
Originally set up as a top down environment, the Kimberly Clark Andean Region struggled with
getting everyone within the organization focused on achieving the same mission. Wanting to expand
their reach and market share, Sergio Nacach realized that he needed to find a way to connect the
employees to the company. Prior to his arrival, the company philosophy was that, the solution was
always to come from better products and better advertising... Decisions were top down and the senior
positions had all the power (Clark, 3). Having management hold all the power, allowed the employees
to believe there impact didn t matter. As Nacach became more involved within the organization, the
company began to move their focus away from a strictly top down model into one where individuals
were more involved in the decisions that they often times knew more about than the top level
management. Instead of only having the leaders of the organization be the big individuals in the
company, KC established that any person in charge of even or or three people was a leader....
developed a plan to motivate those who were moving the wheels of the organization (Clark, 10).
While not at the level of being completely focused on People s Proposition, the steps that Kimberly
Clark is taking is pushing the company in that direction. Kimberly Clark recognized that what is best

How might the business you have chosen improve the way that it motivates its staff?

This will cause staff to start their work early as they are then already at work. A consequence of this is
increasing their employee s attendance and punctuality therefore productivity increases.
Another advantage of offering free food to Jaguar Land Rover staff is that they are encouraged to do
overtime. This is because their dinner would already be paid for. This can cause employees to do extra
work and increase sales. Resulting in the business to gain more profit.
However, offering employees free food can be a weakness in some aspects. For example, jaguar can
lose money by offering their employees free food. This is because jaguar land rover in castle
Bromwich has over 2500 employees which would then result it being very expensive for them all to
take advantage of this motivational method. Moreover causing Jaguar Land Rover to lose profit and
therefore won t be able to afford the equipment to not only make cars but specialised ones.
Another disadvantage of offering free food to Jaguar Land Rover staff is that the company may be
open to health risks. This is because the chemicals and fumes, machinery and being round dust could
create health hazards within the food content being served. The consequences of this are, more
employees will take time off work to recover and reduce the amount of cars produced.
I conducted some primary research and asked 5 members of staff what new methods of motivation

Should Chocolate Milk Be Allowed In Schools
Should Chocolate Milk Be Banned From Schools
An Argument Essay by Andy Xu
A lot of schools and schools have asked this question. Should chocolate milk be allowed in school?
This is a question that the principal of of Westpark Elementary wants the answer to. She decided to
ask our fifth grade class. I think chocolate milk should be allowed in schools because kids drink more
chocolate milk than white milk and like it better, chocolate milk is actually really nutritious and
healthy, and because it makes a better drink than sports drinks or Cola.
First of all, you should know that chocolate milk is a lot more tasty than white milk. For example, the

The Dairy Council of California states that chocolate milk helps the health and growth of children and
disease prevention for adults. As I say this, I m realizing that chocolate milk includes nutrients that
children hardly get, while it s still a very healthy drink. Equally important, chocolate milk doesn t
have a lot of fat or no fat at all. In fact, the RockView brand chocolate milk is one of the many fat free
chocolate milk brands. Some people will argue that the sugar will make you fat, but the sugar in
chocolate milk can be burned off from exercising. Children that drink chocolate milk instead of white
milk don t consume more sugar, fat, or calories, says the Midwest Dairy Association. This shows that
children that chocolate milk indeed does not have an effect on making you overweight. This makes me
remember that most of my class that buys lunch drinks chocolate milk. Indeed, barely anyone in my

What Is Nietzsche s Response To Modernism
In 1882, German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche declared, God is dead! God remains dead! And we
have killed him (120). Modern thought and its scientific basis rejected the existence or need of any
God, religion, or their accompanying belief in absolute, objective morality. This rejection of the divine
preoccupies a greater segment of the population after Nietzsche s death as humanity seeks redemption
from the atrocities of two world wars. However, rejection of God and religion removes the healing
potential of faith, resulting in a modern society yearning for meaning among the ashes of Europe s
dead. No answer presents itself easily, but one of modernism s philosophical responses reveals itself in
the devastation. As Wylie Sypher surmised, we have lived amid the dust and crashes of the twentieth
century and have learned how the direst calamities that befall man seem to prove that human life at ...

Paul Levy Case Summary
Paul Levy: Taking Charge of the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center How would you describe the
situation Levy inherited? The Beth Israel Hospital and Deaconess Hospital were consolidated and
became Beth Israel Deaconess (BID) in 1996. BID operated under the Care Group Systems (CGS),
which was an affiliation of some Boston area hospitals. The BID hospital system was in anarchy.
There were significant operating losses, amounting to millions of dollars each year. BID management
seemed incapable of implementing turnaround plans. The hospital experienced tremendous employee
turnover and suffered from poor patient care. The old hierarchical structure continued in the new BID.

condition was that he would start his job the first week of January 2002, before the Hunter report was
presented. Hunter was the outside consultant hired to review the organization and suggest changes to
turn the organization around. Levy wanted to be hired prior to the Hunter report so that he could use
the report in ways that he thought would be best. The second condition was to shrink the Board of
Directors from a 44 member group to a more manageable group of 18 members, which was
accomplished just a few months after Levy s appointment as CEO. The third condition of
employment, that the Board remain out of the day to day operations, showed that he believed in a
chain of command. Levy made it clear that any meeting between a board member and a staff person
must be brought to Levy s attention prior to the meeting. Perhaps Levy s intent was to avoid another
situation where chiefs convinced the BOD to fire the leader. After searching and various discussions,
the Boards of The Care Group and BID made the decision to appoint Paul Levy. They also secured an
agreement from the AG to foreclose the idea of selling the BID to a for profit hospital. Levy s first day

Importance Of Boys Underachievement In Reading And Writing
Although there is evidence that proves boys underachievement in reading and writing in contrast to
girls , it is important to first note that there are sources that identify boys being less committed to
school than girls, but why is this? A significant aspect is boys attitude to school and examinations.
Weis (1990) effectively argues that the majority of boys are not concerned with excelling in school,
but only with passing. This evidence strongly suggests that boys attitude to education is significantly
lower than girls due to only requiring to pass exams instead of exceeding their limitations and
reaching their full potential. A positive attitude to education is essential to ensure all pupils obtain
higher than satisfactory academic achievements, resulting in a high quality learning experience,
although there are also numerous factors that contribute to boys underachievement in reading and
writing and the ways it can be tackled.
Boys underachievement in reading and writing can be traced to activities within their household. For
example, it is not common that young boys witness their father reading novels instead of newspapers,
yet there is evidence to suggest that young boys are strongly influenced by this. Pickering (1997, p.
49) supports this by expertly stating that, it seems hard to deny that children are affected to some
extent in their learning by the home. As a result, it can be argued that mothers are to blame as they are

Imagery In Antigone
In the poem, Antigone, by Sophocles, Sophocles successfully uses imagery to show the reader how
death fulfills destiny. This poem starts out with Antigone burying her brother against the king s law
and ends with three characters committing suicide. Foremost, the protagonist, Antigone, chooses to
accept death by speaking of herself as the bride of death, and this metaphor appears to be used
throughout the entire play. Death is marriage, which is demonstrated by how the characters choose to
end their own life.
In the beginning of Antigone, Antigone decides to bury her brother even though the punishment is
death. After Creon condemns her to death, she consistently speaks of the tomb as her bridal bed: O
tomb, my bridal bed my house, my prison ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Haemon tries to convince his father, Creon, to change his ways because he is supposed to marry
Antigone and does not want to lose her. In order for Haemon to try and change his father s mind,
Sophocles creates a parallel between stubborn trees being ripped from the ground during a storm, to
The same when a man is sailing: / haul your sheets too taut, never give an inch, / you ll capsize.. (Pg
671 672, Lines 797 802). Sophocles uses this imagery to express to Creon that if he does not become
more flexible, his stubbornness will lead to some kind of downfall, like the tress and the sailor who
refused to bend. Trees that sway with the storm stand tall while trees that do not sway will be ripped
from the dirt. Furthermore, if a sailor does not give his sail sheets room to blow in the wind, the wind
will blow the boat over along with everyone onboard. Consequently, because Creon does not listen,
Haemon takes his life (in Antigone s bridal tomb) in order to fulfill his destiny and live everlasting
with Antigone: And there he lies, body enfolding body... / he has won his bride at last.. (Pg 685. Lines

Bacon s Rebellion and Challenge
Bacon s Rebellion and Challenge: Bacon s rebellion is a civil war that erupted between the English
and the Indians in the Chesapeake whose main cause was land and labor. Since the English men were
facing hunger, they decided to go out in search of greener pastures that included the search for new
lands to do farming and later change it to cash. The farming itself involved looking a place that they
would plant tobacco and as they were in this process, they came along some Indian communities who
were already residing at their (English) border. That is when the conflict began whereby the Indian
communities were beaten up and forced to flee from the area. This not only affected the Indians but
also former servants who had worked with the colonialists and were part and parcel of the colonists as
they ended up being landless. During this war, Bacon refused to send any troop that would assist in
stopping the conflict leading to loss of lives and discrimination by the Indians. The Southerners were
not needed by the government and even those who held top positions were ordered to be killed,
removed forcefully from their positions, and sold into slavery. Since these individuals were under
Bacon s power, they had no choice than to comply with the order. This war led to loss of properties
and houses hence the Southerners became displaced and they even lost children due to the bad
weather and sleeping in the cold. In the process of all these Berkeley called for an election to be

Executive summary
The Center for Urban Sustainable Planning (CUSP) was established in 1996 as a United States 501(c)
(3) non profit organization intended to educate city planners and government officials on sustainable
urban planning programs for low to mid range developing countries and assist them in developing
urban systems that serve industry, tourism, and provide opportunities for the urban poor. Our areas of
expertise include urban planning, tenure rights, economic development, infrastructure,
environmentally friendly development, social engagement, poverty reduction, zoning codes,
legislation, and residential housing focused on provision of adequate housing for the urban poor.
The CUSP mission is to ensure that city planners, government officials, transnational corporations,
and the international community engages in urban planning activities to build better cities that serve
their entire population in environmental and economically sustainable ways.
We are aware that with increasing migration to urban centers by both professionals seeking work, as
well as those in low skill, no skill industries, there are increasing challenges for these various
stakeholders and decision makers in the area of providing adequate housing, infrastructure, and
services that reach the poor and lower middle class residents, while also providing infrastructure that
serves investors well and will attract their more highly paid professional staff to areas where they

Encyclopedie Observation
After visiting the exhibit on the encyclopedie I have learned many things in regards to the upcoming
French Revolution. During the eighteenth century was the period known as the enlightenment. The
enlightenment was most important in terms of emphasizing proven information as opposed to
superstition. At this time men and women of the enlightenment developed new ideas and developed
intellectual texts. One such text was the encyclopedie which attempted to record all of human
knowledge. Of the many things I have learned after visiting the exhibit I believe the most important
things I have learned from this experience include: the importance of our current freedoms, the
importance of standing up for what s important to you, and the importance of understanding how
language shapes how an individual sees the world. First off, the encyclopedie was published between
1751 and 1772 and as stated previously, attempted to record all of human knowledge. The chief
editors of the intellectual text were Denis Diderot and Jean Le Rond d Alembert. Due to their values
and ideas contradicting those of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

from heaven and as a natural right bestowed by an intelligent creator. He stood up for this idea through
the continued creation of the encyclopedie. Within the encyclopedie he states The people of a given
society are thus obligated to overthrow any ruler who has ignored the natural limits placed upon their
power. Although there were potential risks for their continuing to publish the encyclopedie they
pushed on because they understood the importance of standing up for what was important to

Patriotism or Cosmopolitanism Essay
Humankind would be a better place if we were all just citizens of the world. In Martha Nussbaum s
Patriotism and Cosmopolitanism she argues whether children should be taught in education to be
patriotic or cosmopolitan. Nussbaum s definition of cosmopolitanism is a person whose primary
allegiance is to the community of human beings in the entire world. Nussbaum begins her argument
by raising questions about education and how students ought to be taught that hunger in third world
countries are problems of global problems and not the countries problem. She says We should regard

and the concentric circle theory be taught? Should children learned from the outer edge moving
inward? Or the inner edge going out? She believes that both patriotism and cosmopolitanism are
important and should have an effect on every persons life. If one does not investigate their own culture
how will they be open minded to another? She states that we must learn about the uniqueness of other
cultures and learn from part to whole about our entire society. (p 39) But is this what is happening?
No, not at all. America used to be the center for cosmopolitanism. This was the country of immigrants

crucial ways, ignorant to itself. This feeling of love and devotion to American is harmless but once it

Consciousness and Philosophers of the Mind
Consciousness and Philosophers of Mind
Consciousness is a word used by philosophers, to signify that immediate knowledge which we have of
our present thoughts and purposes, and, in general of all the operations of our mind... [and] if I am
asked to prove that I cannot be deceived by consciousness to prove that it is not a fallacious sense I
can find no proof... (Thomas Reid, referenced by Lehrer, 2008).
Introduction
There are many features of consciousness that philosophers of the mind discuss and debate. Two are
found within the philosophy of Russ McBride; they are: a) ...a conscious creature or subject ; and b) a
conscious mental state (Manson, 2011, 100). Another philosophy professor, Michael Antony, sees two
features that are commonly debated and dissected by scholars in and out of the field of philosophy.
Those features are the conscious state and the conscious creature both of which will be further
developed in this paper. Are mental states always clearly conscious states ? Or are they clearly not
conscious? Antony argues that it is impossible to accept that there could be any borderline cases or
fuzzy boundaries for concepts of consciousness (Antony, 2008). Antony s and other approaches to
consciousness are reviewed and critiqued in this paper.
The Literature on Consciousness
The concept of consciousness is ambiguous and polysemic (having more than one meaning),
according to professor Neil Manson (King s College in London). The fact that

What Is The Difference Between Carnevale And Ham
The purpose of this paper is to discuss the practical implications of David G. Carnevale and Kay Ham
s publication Going Beyond Human Resource Management Technique found in Chapter 11 of the
Handbook of Human Resource Management in Government. The core theme of Carnevale and Ham s
article is that human resource management (HRM) should be more than just an enforcing or technical
entity. While there remains a need for policies to be written, FMLA paperwork to be processed,
classification studies to be conducted, and a bureaucratic approach that upholds consistent execution
of HR principles, HRM should play a strategic role in an organization s development as well. HRM
that operates strategically focuses on qualitative data, and leaves room for interpretation, whereas
control oriented HR methods follow a scientific, rigid formula. HRM can be conducted in both
manners, and the two paradigms can work symbiotically (Carnevale Ham, 262 263). The human
resource department in Davidson County interacts with DavidsonWorks, a county department and the
local workforce development board, within two HRM paradigms identified by Carnevale and Ham
(265) as the bureaucratic side and the interpretive zone. The bureaucratic side of the HR house
assumes a more traditional HR function. In this role, the HR staff assists with workers compensation
claims, employee grievances, and other standard employee/employer relation issues. When
DavidsonWorks is actively hiring, the human

Deregulation And Lack Of Supervision
Additionally, reasons for most of the major crises were deregulation and lack of supervision. Until
recently, such complex products like derivatives were unsupervised as they were not directly
connected to the deposits.
A change in regulation is one of the problems which arises for structured products. For example
decision of government to decrease use of non standardised or opaquely priced financial products. The
aim of such action is to attract attention of structured products users to the need of covering
externalities placed by such instruments.
Moreover, crises are considered to be consequences of several negative economic indicators, however
this is not correct for the 2007 crisis, which happened during the period of high and stable growth rate
and low inflation. Due to a strong connection between financial markets, the crisis spread fast
globally. This showed that even well developed economic system can experience damageable drops.
As a countermeasure, in developed countries, governments set their monetary policies to stimulate
industrial output and recover financial markets.
4.2. Structured Products are to Blame
Structured products are blamed for playing important role in the 2007 crisis. The securitisation process
changed the way banks operate as the originate to hold model replaced by the fee driven originate to
distribute model. New operating model helped banks reduce maturity mismatch for assets and
liabilities. However, such products are not transparent

Psychodynamic Psychotherapy And Person Centered Psychology...
The counseling profession has a broad spectrum of possibilities when it comes to choosing which
psychological approach to take. The field of counseling takes many forms and offers many career
options, from school counseling to marriage and family therapy. As there are numerous styles in
existence, it is important to be aware of the many approaches available to take. For my research two
psychological approaches, Psychodynamic Psychotherapy and Person Centered Psychology, will be
critically analyzed and discussed in depth in order to compare the techniques as well as effectiveness
of each.
Foundation of Psychodynamic Psychotherapy
Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy was developed by Sigmund Freud during the Victorian
Era in Vienna, Austria. Sigmund Freud s psychological works set the base for the profession of
psychology as well as the practice of modern psychotherapy. Freud believed human behavior was
motivated by intrapsychic conflict stemming from the three areas of the subconscious: id, ego, and
superego (Murdock, 2009).
Freud s psychoanalytic approach to therapy had more of a negative view of human nature that Carl
Rogers view. Freud thought human dysfunction developed as a result of poor genetic make up, as well
as deficits (fixations) caused by missed psychosexual developmental stages. In short, human conflict
came about as a result of struggles between the id (primal, instinctual urges), ego (role of self in
reality) and superego (conscience/critic), manifested in the

Road Not Taken Tone
The Road Not Taken by Robert Frost relays the message that in life we, as the readers of the poem,
have many decisions to make and how we choose to make those decisions, rules our future. The Road
Not Taken is a metaphor for real life and in real life there are important decisions which, in some
instances, can cause immense change. The symbolism in The Road Not Taken is the two paths which
represent the life of a traveler and all his life decisions. In Frost s poem, the reader comes to realize
that life is a combination of decisions, consequences and fate. The author s tone in the poem plays an
immense part in helping the reader understand the poem. Throughout the poem we learn that there are
two paths to take and the traveler is uncertain about which to choose. Moreover, we learn that
choosing the path is actually a life decision and not just a choice between two roads diverging in the
autumn woods. Towards the end of the poem, Frost s tone changes to regret, Frost was once said about

Sociological Concepts In Disney Movie Pocahontas
Concepts in Sociology
There are five sociological concepts I am going to explain. And I will be using scenes from the Disney
movie Pocahontas as examples. The five are: norms, role conflict, values, ethnocentrism and cultural
relativism.
The first concept I would like to talk about is norms. Norms are different rules, whether they are
spoken or assumed, about which kinds of behaviors are acceptable in a culture and which ones aren t
acceptable. As an example I would like to use the Disney movie Pocahontas. A clear example of a
norm from this movie is the scene where Pocahontas has disobeyed her father by talking to the white
man (aka John Smith). Disobedience was something you did not do in her village. The father was in
charge of the family and the rest of the family was expected to listen. Another norm for her culture
was to take care of the village and everyone in it. Their culture wasn t all about fun and adventure.
They made sure their top priority was the life and ease of everyone in the village. Norms can also
change. There is a scene where the chief, Powhatan, tells the village that no one is allowed ... Show

way of saying this is a group s values are what the group thinks are important. For the Indians in

valued gold and power. The important thing for him was to get lots of money so he could go back to

The Problem Of Network Security
Network security has never been so critical for the last decades. Companies nowadays are at a
potential risks. The use of data is essential for business needs and user s education is a priority. Users
allow companies to manipulate their data on a trust relationship basis. A startup healthcare company
has many challenges in the market as new cyber threats come every seconds which impel network
security administrator to enforce strict rules and measures. A company information technology
structure set up will determine its protection. A risk analysis is important to discover flaws and
recommend measures that administrators need to take. As for any startup company, the needs to a
good information technology structure plan is paramount. ABC Healthcare is new with 50 employees.
According to fig.1 which illustrates the ABC information technology structure the company is at great
risk. The company is equipped with an ISP modem/router that is directly connected to a switch. The
ABC might have installed great antivirus software to protect their system against cyber attacks.
Nevertheless, managing healthcare data in a network with only antivirus is not enough. An antivirus
offers great protection and is an effective way to protect against viruses. However, a firewall is a
necessary tool to help keep attackers off the network based on rules set implicitly to filter the web
traffic and protect files. While antivirus is a great tool to help keep you safe, adding a firewall will

Microwaves imaging recognition by using advanced computational intelligence on biomedical
applications (breast cancer detection) RESEARCH AREA OF INTEREST : HEALTH
TECHNOLOGIES
1. INTRODUCTION
This project aims to develop improved microwave imaging algorithms using radar based time reversal
signal processing coupled with tomographic reconstruction to solve for the inverse source and
scattering problems that arise in microwave imaging for localization of suspicious tissue regions as
well as to estimate the shapes and dielectric properties of potentially malignant lesions within highly
dense breasts. Computational Breast Phantoms using ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The technique used for detection in microwave imaging is based on the contrast in the dielectric
properties between healthy and malignant breast tissues. Breasts consist of a mixture of fatty, adipose,
epithelial and connective tissues. Dense breast tissue results from a large percentage of epithelial and
connective tissues, collectively referred to as fibro glandular tissues.
It is well established from radiographic images that malignant breast tumours have irregular spiculated
shapes and usually hide inside healthy fibro glandular regions.
The challenge faced by any existing imaging is to distinguish the malignant breast tissues from
healthy fibro glandular tissue regions. Another compelling potential application is the characterization
of the relative density of tissues in a healthy breast using microwave imaging as the high breast
density is strongly correlated with cancer risk. The breast density estimation via microwave imaging
can help to identify high risk subjects before cancer has manifested. In addition, microwave imaging
can also be used in monitoring the response of a tumour to other treatment protocols. These require
dielectric mapping of the breast in addition to localization of malignant tissue. 2. AIMS AND
OBJECTIVES
This project will make a significant contribution to knowledge in the modelling and design of a non
invasive medical condition monitor using physiological responses. In particular, the project aims to:

Descriptive Essay On A Day At The Beach
Traveling the distance for a day of no school, work and responsibilities for a quick getaway, is the
medication to a happy lifestyle. So we set off a trip to a destination that is worry free. The long car
ride is spent singing to our favorite throwback songs and arguing about the dumbest of things, like
who ate the last slice of pizza the night before or maybe even who left the seat up last. All of which
are moments worth a chuckle. When we finally arrive at the wonderful place, the first breath of fresh
air is taken as the door to our white suburban is opened and we come into contact with the grounds of
Pismo Beach. With the help of the seven individuals that poured out of the cramped car; we start to
unpack the trunk with gadgets that are needed for the day to begin. Ice chests, sand buckets, shovels,
foldable chairs, towels and a radio, all come along with us in our journey for a day at the beach.
Immediately it is noticed that there is a drastic change in temperatures as it dropped a couple degrees
from how it felt back home. The breeze here fills my skin with goosebumps that the short hairs on my
arms stand up as it is too cold for normalcy. The wind also elevates the grainy sand to reach the height
of my head, and the particles become a part of my tangled brunette hair, where later it will almost
become impossible to get every single sand bit out of the barkish stands. Heading down to the
oceanside, we choose a section to set up. Towels are thrown on the surface of the beach. Sandwiches
are in the factory of Momma s kitchen being prepared for the hungry stomachs of my siblings and I.
After filling out human gas tanks, it s time to get a feel of the finest, Pismo Beach. Buckets are filled
with sand because it is time to build unstable castles and mansions that is a representation of our ideal
home when we grow up. My dad will think it s cool acting like the hulk, stomping around our
masterpiece and burning it down to the core, smooshing together the damp sand, with the only thing
left is the stamp of his size thirteen foot. And us. rolling in the sand laughing at the character he played
so carelessly. The scene he created, the laugh we felt in our stomachs, are all just part of why we love
so much about

The Goal By Alex Rojo
The Goal, story circles around Alex Rojo, the manufacturing and production plant manager at UniCo
and the challenges he faces to save his plant, which is on the brink of shutting down. He s given 3
months time to turn around the dying manufacturing plant. Alex is torn between professional and
personal life issues, and novel does excellent job depicting the protagonist s struggle to save his plant
and his marriage.
He struggles to find a way to cut his costs, improve his production and shipping times, without getting
rid of employees. The company faces many constraints, which are described as a limitation or
restriction. It becomes seemingly obvious as the story goes on that the goal of the employees was all
wrong.
While thinking back ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They can achieve this a number of different ways, whether it be to increase net profit, increase return
on investment and cash flow, or other means. As long as the end goal is to make money. He must learn
how to put his operations into those terms to reach his goal.
He decides he needs to find Jonah once again to get some more mentoring. Jonah shares three terms
that will help him run his plant: throughput, inventory and operational expense. Everything can be
classified under one of these terms. While in the midst of all of this turmoil, the plant had robots that
were taking over some of the production jobs. Alex realizes, after his talk with Jonah, that these robots
did not help to save money, but in fact increased costs, operational expenses, and were less productive.
The robots were implemented, which increased costs to do so, however they did not reduce other costs
like direct labor. They shifted labor to other parts of the plant. Now the challenge is how they are
going to take care of the robots issue without lowering efficiencies? Alex decides to visit Jonah again.
Jonah tells him he has got it all wrong.
Alex takes some time to reflect once again during his Boy Scouts trip. A balanced plant is not the
answer Alex is looking for. This will only decrease throughput and increase inventory and operating
expenses. While on a hike, Alex realizes he understands the concept of dependent events. He takes the
slowest kid (Herbie) and puts him in the front of

  • 2. Overt Discrimination In The Workplace Employment discrimination in the United States is unlawful by Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964; employers, employer agencies, and labor organizations are prohibited to discriminate against a person based on race, color, sex, religion, and national origin (Belton, 1978). Although, Title VII passed half a century ago, sex discrimination is still present in the workplace. Feminist theory attempts describing and reveling overt and covert sex discrimination during the hiring process, exploring its possible origins and causes, and reducing or eradicating it from the workplace (Reskin, 2000). To attempt reducing sex discrimination, the first step is for society to recognize its existence according to the feminist theory (Reskin, 2000). A business woman is passed on a promotion within her company, for a man got it, although she has seniority and more experience; and a male nurse is passed on head of nurses promotion, for a female nurse, according to the hospital, has more nurturing traits, although he is as friendly, nurturing, and caring, without mentioning, he also has seniority and more experience. These are examples of overt discrimination since they are obvious, in both situations, by each person knowing employment qualifications and longevity of the other. Similarly, there are examples of covert discrimination; however, these are difficult to notice. Both men and women might be discriminated against if they are applying for an out of role job, meaning, the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Fly In The Fly Bugs and insects are often used as literary devices in very different ways, yet they mostly have some kind of connection to the protagonists lives, their emotions and their character traits. The insect s outward appearance stands in sharp contrast to that of a human being in fiction, yet its character traits or emotions are personified in order to be similar to those of the human protagonist. This contrast is what makes stories like these so effective. This is, to a certain extent, also the case in The Fly by Katherine Mansfield even though here the human protagonist, the boss, is the one actively projecting his inner self onto the insect. In fact, it is possible to say that the fly is used as a reflector: it reflects the boss s idealised ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It is important to mention that the only way the boss is able to process his son s death is through crying but one day he fails to cry, starting the inevitable road to his spiritual death (cf. Boyle 183). More indications of the relation between the failure of the boss and that of the fly are found on page 164: Nothing happened or was likely to happen (Mansfield 164). This can be seen as a reference to the tears the boss ceases to cry and is most likely not going to be able to cry ever again. The aspect of failure also becomes obvious when looking at the way the fly is described throughout the last two pages: It was ready for life again (Mansfield 163). This shows not only the fly s victory of surviving the fall into the inkpot but also the new hope the boss finds in observing the fly and testing its limits. This hope, however, dies when the fly dies. As mentioned before, the boss experiences his spiritual death (Boyle 183) at the end of the story which is emphasised and illustrated by the death of the fly. The story, therefore, doesn t seem to be mainly about the death of the fly really but about how the fly s death stands for the boss s spiritual death. It is mainly caused by his inability to properly grieve for his son anymore, which leads him to loose all kinds of human feelings. Boyle examines the aspect of the spiritual death in greater detail and explains the connection between the blots of ink and the boss s grief very well, saying the struggles of the fly with the blots of ink, in fact, parallel the struggles of the boss with his grief for his son (184). According to Boyle, the love for the boss s son could be substituted with the grief he feels after his son s death. (185) It is therefore logical to assume that the moment he stopped grieving, he stopped loving to a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Whilst the second aspect Managing in groups and teams means a HR specialist can work with others and solve problems. No, not the jerkish guy down the street, a literal ass. Can you imagine four days filled with declarations of love, hate, curses, cures, disgust, and delight? An ultimatum so great it pits two people married for centuries against each other? Love is in the air, and so is hate in Shakespeare s A Midsummer Night s Dream. Unfortunate circumstances fall upon seven lovers in the woods one night, proving that love is more fickle than true. The King and Queen seemingly have been married forever, and most likely have been fighting for forever as well. Oberon and Titania are fairies, meaning they help bring balance to nature, but they have been neglecting their duties because of their argument. Titiana vents, And never, since the middle summer s spring, Met we on hill, in dale, forest, or mead, By paved fountain or rush brook, or in the beached margent of the sea (2.1.82). While they argue and avoid each other the nature they are supposed to be taking care of is beginning to show the neglect, And, through this distemperature, we see The season alter: hoary headed frosts Fall in the fresh lap of the crimson rose, and on old Heim s thin and icy crown an odorous chaplet of sweet summer buds is, as in mockery, set (2.1.108). The reason the King and Queen are fighting is rather strange, Oberon wants a mortal boy whom Titania has taken as her ward. Oberon gives no reason as to why he wants the boy so bad, he probably just wants him because Tatiana loves him so much. Titana befriended a mortal woman and spent hours gossiping with her, laying on the sands by the shore, and when the mortal woman got pregnant and died during childbirth, Titans made a promise to raise the child. Christians since before the dream of Constantine have believed God and Christ constitute a ruler of the universe. Anglo Saxon society perceived the Christian God in the mold of the pre Christian Germanic tradition of kingship. The Anglo Saxon perception of God as a king in the Germanic tradition has tremendous significance on late Anglo Saxon politics. The inclusion of the Christian deity in the leadership hierarchy of Anglo Saxon society contributed to changes in how earthly kings themselves were perceived. Tacitus s Germania offers insight into value system of the continental pagan ancestors of the Anglo Saxons three centuries before Horsa and Hengist. A native Floridian probably wouldn t draw the typical split plan design with a tile roof and a screened in lanai. The extent of the child s artistic ability would probably consist of a box with a triangle on top of it. As fundamental as it sounds, the use of this structure has a long history dating back to ancient Greece. Today, the temple lies in ruins. The foundation and many of the columns still stand, but the roof and carved designs are all but missing. The Pantheon, built in Rome around AD 126, is in great condition yet today. More massive than the Parthenon, the exterior of the Pantheon still looks smoother. The eight Corinthian columns that line the front entrance are not as intrusive as the Doric columns of ancient Greece. They are thinner and ornately decorated. Also, the Pantheon gains its giant size because of its high walls, not by resting its foundation on a mountainous staircase. Again, this makes the temple more delicate than the Parthenon and this difference also infers that the Romans felt much more secure from the dangers of invasion. Unlike the Parthenon that was destroyed by enemies, the Pantheon still stands content. Continuing inside, the walls of the Pantheon are intrinsically a genius of splendor. They are decorated with ornate designs of Corinthian columns and mock windows. The beauty of the three dimensional wall fixtures is exemplified by sunlight let in by the large oculus at its zenith. Importance Of Boys Underachievement In Reading And Writing Although there is evidence that proves boys underachievement in reading and writing in contrast to girls , it is important to first note that there are sources that identify boys being less committed to school than girls, but why is this? A significant aspect is boys attitude to school and examinations. Weis (1990) effectively argues that the majority of boys are not concerned with excelling in school, but only with passing. This evidence strongly suggests that boys attitude to education is significantly lower than girls due to only requiring to pass exams instead of exceeding their limitations and reaching their full potential. A positive attitude to education is essential to ensure all pupils obtain higher than satisfactory academic achievements, resulting in a high quality learning experience, although there are also numerous factors that contribute to boys underachievement in reading and writing and the ways it can be tackled. Boys underachievement in reading and writing can be traced to activities within their household. For example, it is not common that young boys witness their father reading novels instead of newspapers, yet there is evidence to suggest that young boys are strongly influenced by this. Pickering (1997, p. 49) supports this by expertly stating that, it seems hard to deny that children are affected to some extent in their learning by the home. As a result, it can be argued that mothers are to blame as they are the ones reading stories to their ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 25. Imagery In Antigone In the poem, Antigone, by Sophocles, Sophocles successfully uses imagery to show the reader how death fulfills destiny. This poem starts out with Antigone burying her brother against the king s law and ends with three characters committing suicide. Foremost, the protagonist, Antigone, chooses to accept death by speaking of herself as the bride of death, and this metaphor appears to be used throughout the entire play. Death is marriage, which is demonstrated by how the characters choose to end their own life. In the beginning of Antigone, Antigone decides to bury her brother even though the punishment is death. After Creon condemns her to death, she consistently speaks of the tomb as her bridal bed: O tomb, my bridal bed my house, my prison ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Haemon tries to convince his father, Creon, to change his ways because he is supposed to marry Antigone and does not want to lose her. In order for Haemon to try and change his father s mind, Sophocles creates a parallel between stubborn trees being ripped from the ground during a storm, to The same when a man is sailing: / haul your sheets too taut, never give an inch, / you ll capsize.. (Pg 671 672, Lines 797 802). Sophocles uses this imagery to express to Creon that if he does not become more flexible, his stubbornness will lead to some kind of downfall, like the tress and the sailor who refused to bend. Trees that sway with the storm stand tall while trees that do not sway will be ripped from the dirt. Furthermore, if a sailor does not give his sail sheets room to blow in the wind, the wind will blow the boat over along with everyone onboard. Consequently, because Creon does not listen, Haemon takes his life (in Antigone s bridal tomb) in order to fulfill his destiny and live everlasting with Antigone: And there he lies, body enfolding body... / he has won his bride at last.. (Pg 685. Lines 1370 1371). In addition, Creon s wife commits suicide after hearing about Haemon s death. These deaths caused Creon to capsize like a stubborn sailor in a ... • 26. Bacon s Rebellion and Challenge Bacon s Rebellion and Challenge: Bacon s rebellion is a civil war that erupted between the English and the Indians in the Chesapeake whose main cause was land and labor. Since the English men were facing hunger, they decided to go out in search of greener pastures that included the search for new lands to do farming and later change it to cash. The farming itself involved looking a place that they would plant tobacco and as they were in this process, they came along some Indian communities who were already residing at their (English) border. That is when the conflict began whereby the Indian communities were beaten up and forced to flee from the area. This not only affected the Indians but also former servants who had worked with the colonialists and were part and parcel of the colonists as they ended up being landless. During this war, Bacon refused to send any troop that would assist in stopping the conflict leading to loss of lives and discrimination by the Indians. The Southerners were not needed by the government and even those who held top positions were ordered to be killed, removed forcefully from their positions, and sold into slavery. Since these individuals were under Bacon s power, they had no choice than to comply with the order. This war led to loss of properties and houses hence the Southerners became displaced and they even lost children due to the bad weather and sleeping in the cold. The Center For Urban Sustainable Planning Executive summary The Center for Urban Sustainable Planning (CUSP) was established in 1996 as a United States 501(c) (3) non profit organization intended to educate city planners and government officials on sustainable urban planning programs for low to mid range developing countries and assist them in developing urban systems that serve industry, tourism, and provide opportunities for the urban poor. Our areas of expertise include urban planning, tenure rights, economic development, infrastructure, environmentally friendly development, social engagement, poverty reduction, zoning codes, legislation, and residential housing focused on provision of adequate housing for the urban poor. The CUSP mission is to ensure that city planners, government officials, transnational corporations, and the international community engages in urban planning activities to build better cities that serve their entire population in environmental and economically sustainable ways. We are aware that with increasing migration to urban centers by both professionals seeking work, as well as those in low skill, no skill industries, there are increasing challenges for these various stakeholders and decision makers in the area of providing adequate housing, infrastructure, and services that reach the poor and lower middle class residents, while also providing infrastructure that serves investors well and will attract their more highly paid professional staff to areas where they would like to develop ... • 28. Encyclopedie Observation After visiting the exhibit on the encyclopedie I have learned many things in regards to the upcoming French Revolution. During the eighteenth century was the period known as the enlightenment. The enlightenment was most important in terms of emphasizing proven information as opposed to superstition. At this time men and women of the enlightenment developed new ideas and developed intellectual texts. One such text was the encyclopedie which attempted to record all of human knowledge. Of the many things I have learned after visiting the exhibit I believe the most important things I have learned from this experience include: the importance of our current freedoms, the importance of standing up for what s important to you, and the importance of understanding how language shapes how an individual sees the world. First off, the encyclopedie was published between 1751 and 1772 and as stated previously, attempted to record all of human knowledge. In Martha Nussbaum s Patriotism and Cosmopolitanism she argues whether children should be taught in education to be patriotic or cosmopolitan. Nussbaum s definition of cosmopolitanism is a person whose primary allegiance is to the community of human beings in the entire world. Nussbaum begins her argument by raising questions about education and how students ought to be taught that hunger in third world countries are problems of global problems and not the countries problem. (Barbaro) Sissela Bok s question arose when she asked how should education and the concentric circle theory be taught? Should children learned from the outer edge moving inward? Or the inner edge going out? She believes that both patriotism and cosmopolitanism are important and should have an effect on every persons life. If one does not investigate their own culture how will they be open minded to another? She states that we must learn about the uniqueness of other cultures and learn from part to whole about our entire society. (p 39) But is this what is happening? No, not at all. America used to be the center for cosmopolitanism. This was the country of immigrants coming together and forming as one but recently it seems otherwise Nussbaum says Our nation is appallingly ignorant of most of the rest of the world. Consciousness and Philosophers of the Mind Consciousness and Philosophers of Mind Consciousness is a word used by philosophers, to signify that immediate knowledge which we have of our present thoughts and purposes, and, in general of all the operations of our mind... [and] if I am asked to prove that I cannot be deceived by consciousness to prove that it is not a fallacious sense I can find no proof... (Thomas Reid, referenced by Lehrer, 2008). Introduction There are many features of consciousness that philosophers of the mind discuss and debate. Two are found within the philosophy of Russ McBride; they are: a) ...a conscious creature or subject ; and b) a conscious mental state (Manson, 2011, 100). Another philosophy professor, Michael Antony, sees two features that are commonly debated and dissected by scholars in and out of the field of philosophy. Those features are the conscious state and the conscious creature both of which will be further developed in this paper. Are mental states always clearly conscious states ? Or are they clearly not conscious? Antony argues that it is impossible to accept that there could be any borderline cases or fuzzy boundaries for concepts of consciousness (Antony, 2008). Antony s and other approaches to consciousness are reviewed and critiqued in this paper. The Literature on Consciousness The concept of consciousness is ambiguous and polysemic (having more than one meaning), according to professor Neil Manson (King s College in London). Carnevale and Kay Ham s publication Going Beyond Human Resource Management Technique found in Chapter 11 of the Handbook of Human Resource Management in Government. The core theme of Carnevale and Ham s article is that human resource management (HRM) should be more than just an enforcing or technical entity. While there remains a need for policies to be written, FMLA paperwork to be processed, classification studies to be conducted, and a bureaucratic approach that upholds consistent execution of HR principles, HRM should play a strategic role in an organization s development as well. HRM that operates strategically focuses on qualitative data, and leaves room for interpretation, whereas control oriented HR methods follow a scientific, rigid formula. HRM can be conducted in both manners, and the two paradigms can work symbiotically (Carnevale Ham, 262 263). The human resource department in Davidson County interacts with DavidsonWorks, a county department and the local workforce development board, within two HRM paradigms identified by Carnevale and Ham (265) as the bureaucratic side and the interpretive zone. The bureaucratic side of the HR house assumes a more traditional HR function. In this role, the HR staff assists with workers compensation claims, employee grievances, and other standard employee/employer relation issues. When DavidsonWorks is actively hiring, the human ... Until recently, such complex products like derivatives were unsupervised as they were not directly connected to the deposits. A change in regulation is one of the problems which arises for structured products. For example decision of government to decrease use of non standardised or opaquely priced financial products. The aim of such action is to attract attention of structured products users to the need of covering externalities placed by such instruments. Moreover, crises are considered to be consequences of several negative economic indicators, however this is not correct for the 2007 crisis, which happened during the period of high and stable growth rate and low inflation. Due to a strong connection between financial markets, the crisis spread fast globally. This showed that even well developed economic system can experience damageable drops. The field of counseling takes many forms and offers many career options, from school counseling to marriage and family therapy. As there are numerous styles in existence, it is important to be aware of the many approaches available to take. For my research two psychological approaches, Psychodynamic Psychotherapy and Person Centered Psychology, will be critically analyzed and discussed in depth in order to compare the techniques as well as effectiveness of each. Foundation of Psychodynamic Psychotherapy Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy was developed by Sigmund Freud during the Victorian Era in Vienna, Austria. Sigmund Freud s psychological works set the base for the profession of psychology as well as the practice of modern psychotherapy. Freud believed human behavior was motivated by intrapsychic conflict stemming from the three areas of the subconscious: id, ego, and superego (Murdock, 2009). Freud s psychoanalytic approach to therapy had more of a negative view of human nature that Carl Rogers view. Freud thought human dysfunction developed as a result of poor genetic make up, as well as deficits (fixations) caused by missed psychosexual developmental stages. In short, human conflict came about as a result of struggles between the id (primal, instinctual urges), ego (role of self in reality) and superego (conscience/critic), manifested in the ... Road Not Taken Tone The Road Not Taken by Robert Frost relays the message that in life we, as the readers of the poem, have many decisions to make and how we choose to make those decisions, rules our future. The Road Not Taken is a metaphor for real life and in real life there are important decisions which, in some instances, can cause immense change. The symbolism in The Road Not Taken is the two paths which represent the life of a traveler and all his life decisions. In Frost s poem, the reader comes to realize that life is a combination of decisions, consequences and fate. The author s tone in the poem plays an immense part in helping the reader understand the poem. Throughout the poem we learn that there are two paths to take and the traveler is uncertain about which to choose. Moreover, we learn that choosing the path is actually a life decision and not just a choice between two roads diverging in the autumn woods. Towards the end of the poem, Frost s tone changes to regret, Frost was once said about The Road Not Taken, No matter which road you take, you ll always sigh, and wish you d taken another way. And I will be using scenes from the Disney movie Pocahontas as examples. The five are: norms, role conflict, values, ethnocentrism and cultural relativism. The first concept I would like to talk about is norms. Norms are different rules, whether they are spoken or assumed, about which kinds of behaviors are acceptable in a culture and which ones aren t acceptable. As an example I would like to use the Disney movie Pocahontas. A clear example of a norm from this movie is the scene where Pocahontas has disobeyed her father by talking to the white man (aka John Smith). Disobedience was something you did not do in her village. The father was in charge of the family and the rest of the family was expected to listen. Another norm for her culture was to take care of the village and everyone in it. Their culture wasn t all about fun and adventure. They made sure their top priority was the life and ease of everyone in the village. Norms can also change. There is a scene where the chief, Powhatan, tells the village that no one is allowed ... The technique used for detection in microwave imaging is based on the contrast in the dielectric properties between healthy and malignant breast tissues. Breasts consist of a mixture of fatty, adipose, epithelial and connective tissues. Dense breast tissue results from a large percentage of epithelial and connective tissues, collectively referred to as fibro glandular tissues. It is well established from radiographic images that malignant breast tumours have irregular spiculated shapes and usually hide inside healthy fibro glandular regions. The challenge faced by any existing imaging is to distinguish the malignant breast tissues from healthy fibro glandular tissue regions. Another compelling potential application is the characterization of the relative density of tissues in a healthy breast using microwave imaging as the high breast density is strongly correlated with cancer risk. The breast density estimation via microwave imaging can help to identify high risk subjects before cancer has manifested. In addition, microwave imaging can also be used in monitoring the response of a tumour to other treatment protocols. These require dielectric mapping of the breast in addition to localization of malignant tissue. 2.
